Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I wouldn’t say we focus on any genre as such, but we like to think everyone we work with has that sort of special “edge” or whatever. We turn down a lot of bands that are probably a much safer bet financially, but if they don’t get us excited, then there’s no fun in it. I’d class everything we do as “Rock & Roll” in some form, but that branches out into weirdo pop, psychedelic rap, garage punk, acoustic ballads, whatever really, so long as it has some heart.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
My mum has always been a musician, so my childhood summers were basically being dragged to folk festivals with her, so I guess I didn’t have much choice. But the first big “business” move was when I was 16, me and my best friend started promoting shows in our hometown (Leicester), purely so we could get into shows before we turned 18. We ended up putting on early shows for the likes of Arctic Monkeys and The Cribs… Funnily enough doing that was what got me accepted into University, after my grades sucked. Did a 3 year degree in “Music Management & Studio Production”, which set me up for this life of fortune and success.
When and where did the label begin?
The year was 2013. I accidentally ended up moving from London to Stockholm, and was working as an A&R assistant at a Universal imprint. We got a demo from this band Sudakistan, who clearly weren’t a good fit for a major label, but I loved it. I’d been thinking about starting a little side project label, just a few 7”s here and there, so figured they would be a good first band for that. That went great, sold out entirely in a couple of days, Pitchfork was all over it… I thought “damn this is easy.” So then I did a few more, then a few albums... and then it just sort of took over my life. Johan came in as co-owner to sort out all my fucking mess in 2016, which was when it started to look more like an actual business and not some sort of international tax scam. Around that time we thankfully managed to trick Redeye into distributing us. Then in 2021 we hired Axel, who came in to sort both of our fucking messes, as a sort of label manager. Someone we pay to shout at us and remind us of what we’re forgetting to do on a daily basis.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
As the label was just supposed to be a side project, I didn’t really think enough about it. I couldn’t really think of a label name, so I just took the name of my club-night I was running in London (Punk Slime), thinking it wouldn’t matter much. By the time I realized that it was a pretty shite name it was too late. The whole “PNKSLM” thing really confuses radio DJs as well, we’ve been called all kinds of things, Pink Slim, Punk Slam etc. It’s got to the point though now where even if we could change it, I’d be too stubborn to.
How has the label changed since it started?
We spend a shitload more money, get a lot more stressed out, and Pitchfork now don’t give a fuck about us. But we’re a million times more organized than we used to be. And we now finally understand the need for solid lead times.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label.
At the core it’s just me, Johan and Axel, so we kind of all do a million different things. But we definitely have certain specific skill sets that work together well - Johan’s great with the business/numbers side of things, Axel is great at keeping stuff organized, and I’m really great at shouting at people on the phone.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
We’ve always naturally leaned towards working with brand new artists, and I guess sort of one of our specialties was introducing them into the world to some degree. But we learned very fast and hard that without any live shows being possible, that task became practically impossible.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
We’ve got artists all over the world now. We obviously end up working with a lot of Swedish artists, often things work better the tighter the relationship can be between us and the artist, which of course is easier if they are at least in the same time zone. But with my English background, we’ve got a fair amount of UK based artists as well. Quite a few from Birmingham UK actually - that’s where I used to hang out and play shows myself as a teenager. Those bands I used to play with, we now release on the label which is pretty awesome. Black Mekon in particular have a lot to blame for my life choices over the years, so it’s cool to work with them and still be releasing their records all this time later.
To be honest I think the ambitions are still pretty much the same as they always were. Basically to each artist as “big” as that artist can get. It’s probably a sign of some degree of narcissism, but I’ve always been terrible at accepting that something is out of reach from us. Like why can’t we get our bands on that big festival, or that TV show, in that magazine, or that tour, whatever it is. Of course it doesn’t always work out, but we’ve definitely always been punching way above our weight when it comes to what we achieve, especially for such a small company on such small budgets. If we take a band on as a label, we’ve got that responsibility to push them to the maximum of our ability. What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
Maybe not the wildest idea, but one that sort of backfired a bit. So when ShitKid retired from music in 2020, she left us with several releases to still put out. She literally left town, had her name changed, and became a nurse. Totally disappeared. So when we released her final album, she was already long gone, but we needed something to help market the release, so I thought it was a good idea to make a load of “Missing” posters with her face on and get them plastered around Stockholm. It turned out a lot of her friends genuinely didn’t know what she was up to, or where she had gone, so we started getting a lot of very worried phone calls. I guess people were talking about it at least!
If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “crossover” marketing campaign?
I strongly believe we need to make some bribes, to get me into the writing room for the final episode of HBO’s hit show Succession. Episode synopsis as follows:
The Roy siblings are stunned when Waystar Royco’s imminent takeover is suddenly thrown into chaos, as a surprise last minute high bidder is dramatically revealed - eccentric music industry mogul, Tor Hansen (Redeye co-founder). In a futile effort to ease tension between the two companies at this pivotal point, Kendall Roy is flown out to Stockholm to meet the hip young company PNKSLM Recordings, to get a grasp on the sort of people they will now be forced to work with. Kendall’s emotions start to rock as he boards the plane, specifically as he’s taking the same flight route his father recently had. Relationships fail almost instantly after Kendall meets PNKSLM founder Luke Reilly (played by Keanu Reeves), as the two industry giants clash personalities on every level. They both go to top local restaurant “The Crazy Horse” for dinner with the previously expected buyer of Waystar Royco, the Swedish tech entrepreneur Lucas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). Whilst Kendall visits the bathroom, Reilly and Matsson make plans to kill him, following poorly received comments he made about Brexit “being kinda cool, if you think about it”. Reilly & Matsson lace his meatballs with rat poison taken from the restaurant floor. Kendall returns, and starts to eat the meatballs. The song “Done With The Day” by PNKSLM artist 7ebra starts playing. In one final twist, whilst consuming his final köttbular - Kendall opens up to Reilly & Matsson - and apologizes for all his wrongdoings, and admits it was a poor decision “based on my own insecurities and my fundamental need to be accepted” to wear the 50,000 dollar leather jacket to a meeting with a record label. Reilly & Matsson look regretfully at each other, but know it’s too late. The episode and series wrap up with a shot of Tor Hansen reclining in his chair with a cigar, in the new Waystar Redeyeco office. The song “No Regrets” by PNKSLM artist She/Beast begins playing. Cut to Roman and Shiv slowly packing their boxes at the office, tears in their eyes - finally realizing, albeit too late, that despite all their differences - Kendall truly was their one last chance to keep the family legacy alive.
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
A person of an immaculate, distinguished taste.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
Definitely streaming. But not because of sales. I’m unfortunately not old enough to know what it was like to sell a million CD’s at 99% profit margins. But more the music discovery side of things. When I started doing this, it was relatively easy to create a genuine buzz/hype around new bands by getting coverage on music blogs, and the bigger music sites. But as playlists started taking over as the way people discover new music online, all those sites have died off. Which I think is a big shame to be honest. If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?
I still really want to do “Pop Slime” and just release really tacky but happy 90’s style pop music. But Johan won’t let me. One day…
They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?

For more than two decades, the disciple that has most visibly carried on Sun Ra Arkestra’s legacy and sound is their musical director, alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, the iconic fire breather and life force that restored the Arkestra’s vitality in the massive vacuum left by Ra and John Gilmore’s death in the ‘90s. Allen turned 98 in 2022 and, as evidenced by Living Sky, his influence and leadership remain undiminished. Marking the Arkestra’s first new recording since their 2021 Grammy-nominated album Swirling, Living Sky was recorded on June 15, 2021 at Rittenhouse SoundWorks in Philadelphia and features a total of twenty musicians, including a strings section. It was mixed and mastered by three-time Grammy winner Dave Darlington (Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, Wayne Shorter).

Working with Paul Weller as producer and co-writer on his 5th studio album, Liverpool troubadour Steve Pilgrim releases the achingly melancholic “Beautiful Blue” on Ltd Vinyl and CD. The album features Paul Weller playing on all tracks , Steve Craddock and Rachael Jean Harris with string arrangements from Hannah Peel. These sketches of songs, melodies and chord progressions became the beginning of a co-writing direction for Pilgrim/Weller and took the material to a new place, tugging and pushing the softlyspoken Scouser in new ways that only Weller could provoke. Tunes such as ‘Test of Faith’, ‘Don’t Let The Mirror Break You’, ‘One With All’, ‘Universe’ and ‘Where Our Love Goes’ have echoes of Pilgrim’s previous work, but add a warmth and classicism found in his co-writer’s celebrated ‘True Meanings’ record. ‘Beautiful Blue’ is the work of an artist who finds strength in still life and shouts loudest when whispering. On a practical level, Geese are still the group we were introduced to in 2021: vocalist Cameron Winter, guitarist Gus Green, guitarist Foster Hudson, bassist Dom DiGesu, and drummer Max Bassin. But spiritually, Geese have returned as an entirely different prospect. Their new album 3D Country is the sound of a restless, adventurous band redefining themselves.
Knowing they were now beyond teenage basement experiments and were instead making something for an audience who would hear it, Geese felt emboldened. While writing 3D Country, Winter was preoccupied with “modern doom,” the way climate change and all manner of looming catastrophes hang on the horizon while we otherwise go about our lives. “It’s about living in spite of just total ambient dread,” he explains. “I wanted to adopt an irreverent, sarcastic way of looking at that.” While Winter wanted to portray a generational experience, he didn’t want to be overly literal or didactic about it. “At this point, everybody I know is already so cynical and defeatist about the state of things, it’s actually hilarious,” he explains. “Younger people make jokes out of the fact that human extinction is on the horizon, and that’s kind of beautiful. I tried to represent that attitude.” With a heightened ambition fueling 3D Country, the band created a bugged-out, wild, unpredictable ride — an almost phantasmagoric reflection of contemporary life. “It feels like going to the circus and instead of having a good time, everyone is trying to kill you,” Bassin says.
3D Country is the follow up to the band’s 2021 debut Projector. That record earned the band their TV debut on Colbert, profiles in the NY Times, Stereogum Band To Watch, Consequence Artist Of The Month, Paste Best Of What’s Next, Rolling Stone called them “indie rock prodigies,” as well as tours with Jack White and Spoon.

Léa Sen’s 2nd release, You Of Now, Pt. 2, is an EP that runs through themes as heavy as they are relatable: quarrel with the self, contradictions, feelings of desire and more.
Showcasing her extensive sonic palette as a guitarist, singersongwriter, producer and mixer, You Of Now, Pt. 2 explores experiences that are deeply real: the unsavoury parts of life and of her own mind. But through these reflections, Sen communicates the peace that comes with knowing that it’s ok to not be perfect. “On this EP, I was just a bit more honest with myself about who I am, and how flawed I am. But no matter how flawed I am, I still care for myself,” she says.
Dragonfly ʚĭɞ details self-imposed restriction over pulsing synths and electronic drums, whilst Luv Him (about u) features her soft and lilting voice framed by little more than guitar chords and an atmospheric vocal. The song communicates toxic relationships based on lust and pleasure.
Signing to Partisan Records in 2022, Sen has seen a stellar rise suggestive of a talent far beyond her years. Twin singer/songwriters Chandra and Leigh Watson mark their arrival at Bloodshot Records with Holler, a crackling country set produced by Grammy-nominated artist, songwriter, and producer, Butch Walker. Recorded over 5 days in Walker’s Nashville studio, Holler was designed to capture the infectious energy and attitude of the Twins’ legendary live sets while showcasing their flawless songwriting chops.
“We didn’t want the album to be pristine. We wanted it to be raw, organic, and authentic, like the songs themselves.” Walker joined Leigh and Chandra on harmony vocals, acoustic guitar and lead guitar on a few tracks as well.

In collaboration with Timmion Records, Daptone is proud to present My Echo, Shadow and Me , the debut album from the soulful Chicano brother, Jonny Benavidez. Hailing from San Diego (via El Paso, TX), Jonny's desire to sing was influenced by his grandfather, John Lorenzo Guzman, who as a teen in the early sixties spent some time harmonizing with groups in El Paso–most notably Sonny Powell and the Night Dreamers. When he was 13, Jonny was given a record player and a box filled with R&B, Doo-Wop, and Soul 45s that he studied obsessively, employing the harmonies and meloldies therein to cultivate his own unique voice. After a chance encounter with the legendary Dimas Garza, Jonny's career began to blossom and soon he would find himself singing alongside stars like Eugene Pitt and Archie Bell–garnering the interest of Timmion Records.
Backed by the incomparable Cold Diamond & Mink (Bobby Oroza, Pratt & Moody) two incredibly successful singles were cut and plans for a full length were struck, culminating in 11 original songs penned by Benavidez. From the uplifting bounce of the title track, the doo-wop dinged "Dedicated to You", the Latin flare of “Uncle Sam,” to the Sweet Soul masterpiece "Somebody Cares" (licensed and released on a Penrose Records 45), My Echo, Shadow and Me is not only an aweinspiring display of Jonny's versatility as an artist but also serves as a window into the eclectic array of soulful sounds that inspired him to fall in love with music and become a singer. Fela Kuti (1938-1997) was a Nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, outlaw and the originator of Afrobeat. A titanic musical and sociopolitical voice, Fela’s legacy spans decades and genres, touching on jazz, pop, R&B, funk, hip-hop, rock and beyond.
1973’s Gentleman is the 7th in the series of celebratory Fela 50th Anniversary reissues. Like its predecessors in the series, this version will be available on exclusive colored vinyl (Igbo Smoke) and the LP will be wrapped in a gold foil obi strip with a brief essay on the album and Fela’s global impact on music. Like Fela’s other early 70’s releases, he used each side of his LPs to create a deep groove that pulls the listener in and follows with metaphoric lyrics that call out and critique the corrupt hangover of colonialism.
Gentleman is the last of Fela’s early 1970s albums recorded with the Africa 70. The title track can be interpreted literally or as a metaphor concerning a wider issue. Fela deftly addresses the colonialism-induced, inferiority complex which led many in Africa’s new governing elites to reject African style, concepts of beauty, and modes of behavior in favor of European imports. Gentleman’s other tracks, “Fefe Naa Efe” and “Igbe,” have more direct, less metaphorical lyrics. On “Fefe Naa Efe,” an Ashanti motto from Ghana, Fela tells a woman dumped by her boyfriend that she must get over the heartache and move on. On “Igbe”, Fela declares that anyone who betrays a friend is shit, and that anybody who lacks self-respect is shit - something you want to expel from your body as soon as possible. He sings the word “shit” in several Nigerian languages, so there is no misunderstanding.

The first witnesses to Samuels’ new beginnings fittingly became part of the sound of the album. During her darkest moments, while writing in isolation, her old friends in the band Bonny Light Horseman offered to take her out on tour in early 2020. “They re-contextualized music for me all over again,” she says. Observing a truly kind and compassionate music community brought Samuels out of herself even more. Inspired by conversations with producer Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady, Bob Weir, Cassandra Jenkins) on the road, Samuels took him up on his offer to produce her new songs and retreated to Isokon Studios in Woodstock, NY in the summer of 2021. They made the album as a duo, with Matt Barick (The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes) contributing drums on the entirety of the record. The result is a sonic template that ranges from the soaring and orchestral to the understated and confessional; at turns free-wheeling and filled with swagger then sincere and precise, with each subtle movement serving to highlight Samuels’ lyrical journeys.
As happens with albums that feel kinetic upon listening, the recording of Bystander with this skeleton crew of trusted friends served to underscore the questions Samuels had set out to answer when she began writing: “I had to ask myself ‘what are my values? What kind of people do I want around?”
In answering them, Samuels illuminates her path out of the wreckage. She doesn’t shy away from where she’s been but more importantly, over the course of these eleven elegiac poems set to a carefully curated symphony of tones, Samuels lets us know where she’s headed. Walking out of a thousand toxic conversations and away from a thousand false illusions, she’s stepping out into the street, with a glass raised for “whoever the fuck is left.” Listeners can count themselves among those being toasted; the lucky ones who get to greet Samuels and hear the tales of her reckoning.

After graduating from Calcutta University and Santiniketan with a degree in fine arts, Neogy moved to London and continued her studies in drama and film at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. As a way to make ends meet, she worked as a high fashion model and was introduced to photographer Marcus Harrison. Neogy’s voice piqued his interest, so he offered to record her.
With only a microphone and book in hand, Neogy recorded the album within a day. Little did she know, Harrison added instrumentation and shopped it around to several labels before signing a deal with Pulsar records.
After it was released in 1968, Neogy’s Perfumed Garden received critical acclaim, including praise from French ambassador Andre Malraux who wrote “I have never heard anything like this. Your voice is exquisite, layered and hauntingly sensuous.” Prestigious newspapers reviewed the album, one of which being the London Times, who compared Neogy’s enunciation to Lawrence Olivier, her range to Yma Sumac, and her sensuality to Eartha Kitt!
Leaving the music industry behind to pursue dramatic arts, Neogy went on to perform in films like To Sir With Love, Lady J, Premonition, Eliza’s Horoscope, The Saint, and The Prisoner. She went on to make films of her own and now works as a professor of film at NYU.

Backer with a few passing acoustics from Cory and the intermittent spirit-moans of Tyler Nuffer ’s steel guitar. The quartet sound two guitars, bass and drums acts as beat-making principle/phrasing device, as well as template for Cory ’s layers of six-string and vocal textures. From the rooftop of their musical safe house the band in their makeshift hut and Cory ensconced in an outhouse they let loose with a blast both face-melting and mind-blowing: a social service that gives constipation a good name.
With Western Cum, this debauched and shameless world is redeemed in the same breath as it is repudiated. A massing of voices and guitars form an almost post-gospel harmony, bright and burgeoning, engorging the thermostat, prising the pressure from your chest before the final wink-out. Maybe it’s a mirage but those things are just another part of reality, ain’t they?

In the lush tobacco fields of North Carolina where BJ Barham was raised, people work hard. Families stay nearby, toiling and growing together. BJ loves those farms and his tiny Reidsville hometown, but he had to run off and start American Aquarium, a band now beloved by thousands. He couldn’t stay, but he couldn’t really leave, either: he’s still singing about the lessons, stories, and lives that define rural America––and him.
Recorded at 3CG Records in Tulsa, OK, American Aquarium’s seventh studio album, Things Change was produced by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter John Fullbright and features cameos from Americana standouts including John Moreland and Jamie Lin Wilson. Stacked with BJ’s signature storytelling––always deeply personal but also instantly relatable, Things Change questions and curses current events, shares one man’s intimate evolution, and leaves listeners with a priceless gift: hope.
BJ’s candor has fueled American Aquarium’s runaway appeal, visible most clearly in consistently sold-out shows across the country and throughout Europe - between 200 and 250 dates a year. Much has changed for the band and BJ since their acclaimed last effort, Wolves. In 2017, every American Aquarium member save BJ quit the group. American Aquarium has featured about 30 players since BJ founded the outfit in 2006, and while each member has left indelible marks, the band has always been anchored by the literary songs and sometimes roaring, sometimes whispering, drawl of BJ Barham. Jacob Morris is a multi-instrumentalist (singer, cello, guitars, bass, keyboards) based just outside of Durham, North Carolina. He began playing cello at the age of four in Austin Texas, playing in his musical family (his father is a he quickly found his place in the legendary scene there playing with (among others) Vic Chestnut, Liz Durrett, Ham 1, Madeline, and Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers
Slow Funeral was recorded in a series of late night sessions at 1093 in Athens, GA, by the graciousness of the studio and its engineer John Speigel. Almost each track is from live, unedited performances of each instrument, with some overdubs of vocals and keys in some places. Each song, though different in mood, seems to occupy the same environment as the others because, well, it did. There’s an atmospheric quality to the space inhabited that runs through the EP like a ribbon.
Slow Funeral is set for release on May 12, 2023 via Strolling Bones Records.

Penguin Cafe return with new album Rain Before Seven.. A sense of optimism infuses Penguin Cafe’s fifth studio album, not the braggadocious, overconfident kind, but more a blithe, self-effacing optimism in keeping with the national character. Even when all signs point to the contrary, it operates within the certainty that things are going to be alright. Probably.

The title comes from an old weather proverb with the rhyming prognostication fine before eleven hinting at a happy ending, irrespective of the science: “I found it in a book and I'd never heard it before,” says Arthur Jeffes, leader of Penguin Cafe. “It has faintly optimistic overtones and I quite like it. It's fallen out of usage recently but it does describe English weather patterns coming in off the Atlantic.”
From the widescreen reverie of opener ‘Welcome to London’ with its cheeky nod to Morricone to ‘Goldfinch Yodel’, the self-described “Maypole banger” at the denouement, there’s a welcome sense of sanguinity, always with an undercurrent of exotic rhythmic exuberance. Playfulness pervades, with a titular nod to A Matter of Life… from 2011, the last album title that concluded with an ellipsis. That Penguin Cafe debut is the bridge between the legendary Penguin Cafe Orchestra, led by Arthur’s father Simon Jeffes, and the muchloved descendent, led by Arthur.
“Stylistically it's really satisfying to get back to playful rhythms and instruments,” says the younger Jeffes, who kept the group’s debut from 12 years ago in mind when writing the new album. “Certainly when starting out, I became aware that we’d stopped using quite a few of the textures that had been there at the beginning and it was certainly there in my dad's earlier stuff. So there's a lot of balafon and textures from completely different parts of the world, musically and geographically: ukuleles, cuatros and melodicas that you can hear.”

Encouraged by co-producer Robert Raths, the rhythmic elements of Rain Before Seven… have never been more to the fore and, at times, even hint at the electronic. ‘Find Your Feet’, for instance, is underpinned with more than just a pulse. Mixed by Tom Chichester-Clark, it brings to the musical melange what Arthur describes as a “near electronic feel”. He adds, excitedly: “There are elements of fun here which we haven't really done with the last three records.” Another ebullient highlight is ‘In Re Budd’, dedicated to the late ambient godfather Harold Budd, who Arthur discovered had died on the day he’d been writing the celebratory ear worm with a deceptively tricky syncopation. Played on an upright piano with some “prepared” felt to accentuate the bounce, Jeffes feels a track with an Afro Cuban Cafe vibe would appeal to Budd’s contrariness.
And then there’s the aforementioned ‘Welcome to London’, which got its name as the world started to open up and people were finally allowed to fly again. Jeffes, who touched down on home soil for the first time in a while, was struck by its cinematic John Barry-esque qualities as he took a taxi into West London from Heathrow with the mise-en-scène of the opulent twilight. The optimism is there, and maybe a little caustic irony too. “Robert [Raths] added a layer of nuance which I think is interesting, because many Londoners are not from London originally. So you pitch up to London as an outsider, and you haven't really found your tribe yet, you get mugged… and then ‘Welcome to London’ takes on a more sarcastic resonance.”

Black Duck captures a band already deeply in tune with one another. The three-piece super-group consists of Douglas McCombs, Charles Rumback, and Bill MacKay each have distinct musical voices that are instantly recognizable, yet blend seamlessly with one another. Their time performing together, playing to the moment and reading each other and the spaces they’re in, formed a fluency between the trio which allows them to follow each other down winding paths and short tangents alike. McCombs is a founding member of Tortoise, Pullman, and Brokeback as well as the long standing bassist for Eleventh Dream Day, an artist whose contribution to the music world can not be overstated. MacKay began releasing records in the early 2000s. He has released several acclaimed solo albums with Drag City as well as a duo album each with Nathan Bowles (Banjo, Black Twig Pickers), and Katinka Kleijn (Cello, Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO)), and two beloved records with Ryley Walker Rumback burst onto the fertile Chicago improvised music scene in the early 2000’s. His fluid technique and expressive playing garnered him much attention. In addition to his solo releases, Rumback has recorded with Ryley Walker, jazz greats such as Jim Baker, James Singleton, and Greg Ward Black Duck’s debut is a testament to that fluency, an expedition led by three veterans into alluring worlds bathed in myriad splendors. Black Duck is a gallery of sonic tapestries, unbound by any genre constraints. Black Duck redefines what two guitarists and a drummer can do, pieces move from breezy shuffles to stormy blues rumbles to gorgeous textural drones. Playing entirely improvised live sets for years helped develop the trio’s acute senses for one another, knowing precisely how to listen to the others and bolster whatever direction they move in. In the short time the trio have played together, they have performed at Big Ears Festival and alongside acts like Yo La Tengo.

Set in a world slightly left of reality, the record tells the story of a flawed disco-enthused antihero and his romantic travails. Sarathy has since established himself as one of the most original and compelling voices in the UK jazz scene and has collaborated with the likes of Shabaka Hutchings, Arun Ghosh, Hieroglyphic Being and Photay. It’s been a steady process of growth and a long time coming to arrive at this sophomore full-length for the man known in his native Steel City and beyond as producer/keyboardist/DJ Buscrates, and every minute of it can be heard and felt on these ten funky and highly evocative tracks.
The finely-honed balancing act between vintage-80s-synth goodness and neck-snapping 90s boom bap, all coated with just the right amount of soulful melodic sensibility never falters at any point on the album. For a more specific comparison, think Manzel's Midnight Theme LP updated for these strange times we're in seems to fit the bill, especially on tracks like "Prisms," "Floating In The Wind" and "Early Morning." This is the funky instrumental mood music you desperately need right now whether you realize it or not, and Buscrates is here to serve it up. "Buckin'" is prominent among the many highlights of the Pittsburgh producer’s album, strongly evoking the likes of Paul Hardcastle, Atmosfear and the Art Of Noise while simultaneously paying homage to the funk/R&B roots of Detroit techno pioneers like Juan Atkins and Derrick May. The album's sonic journey culminates in "On My Way," the only vocal track on the album and which features Soraya Watti's lovely vocals. One can easily imagine this track on the playlist of NY's WBLS in the early 80s. Soraya's smooth and soulful tones prove to be the perfect addition and act as a kind of sexy ghost in the Buscrates machine. The album as a whole feels like nothing so much as an updated, postmodern version of the kinds of sleek, funky grooves oozing through your Cadillac's 8-track deck circa 1972.

We’ve waited long for life signs from Seven Impale, meanwhile the members have been busy with life. Vocalist/guitarist Stian graduated from the Grieg Academy as an opera singer and launched an international career. Keyboardist Håkon joined Enslaved. Some got kids, and some finished their education. Having formally been part of a long term music project TEll A ViSiON became a new project in 2022 with a revitalized direction, a rebirth. The new demos caught the attention of Duchess Box Records who swiftly took the artist for a record deal and have been working to start the hype with the first singles gaining more and more attention with each one.
TEll A ViSiON has been playing shows all around Germany and recently toured in 2000 cap venues with Guano Apes.

The High Water Marks formed in 2003 when Hilarie Sidney (The Apples in Stereo, Elephant 6-Co-Founder) and Per Ole Bratset (Palermo) met in Oslo after an Apples concert. Chaos For The Fly is the debut solo album from Grian Chatten, vocalist of Dublin’s critically-acclaimed band Fontaines D.C.

Description / Bio:
Inspired by the tragicomedic legacy of National Lampoon co-founder Doug Kenney (in whose notes the line ‘These last few days are amongst the happiest I’ve ever ignored’ was found following his mysterious and untimely death), Hayden Pedigo embarked upon The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored with a no-shit aim: to create “the best instrumental acoustic guitar album of the past twenty years.” Though canonical works of comedy and music show their influence—the mournful beauty of Nick Drake, the puckish abandon of John Fahey—Pedigo by no means places their creators on pedestals; if anything pulling them from their plinths, smashing the alabasters, pocketing some pieces, gluing others back together upside down, or leaving them floating free.
Pedigo has lived many lives, having been homeschooled in Amarillo, Texas by his truck-stop preacher father; run for Amarillo City Council in 2019, aged 25—as documented by Jasmine Stodel’s SXSW-premiering, PBS-acquired film Kid Candidate—and struck up pen-friendships and collaborative partnerships with the likes of Terry Allen, Charles Hayward ( This Heat), Werner “Zappi” Diermaier ( Faust), and Tim Heidecker. A move south from Amarillo to Lubbock in 2020 put a spark to the powder keg of his creativity. The move produced not only The Happiest Times and its predecessor Letting Go, but also an Internet presence that showcases a panoply of ever-more outlandish outfits and an effortless deadpan wit. Both the former and the latter helped parlay him into the fashion world, too, having walked the runway for Gucci and been photographed by Hedi Slimane.
In June 2022, Pedigo transported the limbered-up record to Pulp Arts in Gainesville, Florida, where the relentless practice paid off: he played the core acoustic compositions in track order, beginning to end, and by the evening of the first day, realized he’d essentially nailed the record in one go. After tracking the main narrative of the guitar, a studio team of producer Trayer Tryon ( Hundred Waters, Moses Sumney) on synths and bass, Luke Schneider ( Margo Price, Orville Peck) on pedal steel, and Robert Edmondson on electric bass and piano painted in a sunset of sound behind the acoustic parts, lighting them with a warm glow while allowing them to remain front and center of the scene.
How might Fahey have played in a Midwest emo band? Pedigo posits on “Nearer, Nearer,” while the specters of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn float somewhere above “Signal of Hope” – “the most Britishsounding thing I’ve ever written;” an echo in an empty church. Pedigo flits through the cycle of songs, coiling and uncoiling like the mechanism of a clockwork bird on “When It’s Clear;” rambling, a tiny speck in the landscape, on “Elsewhere.” “Then It’s Gone” stands as stark as a leafless tree, guitar spilling a somber tale in its truest voice – and nowhere more than on the title track is Pedigo’s playing more affecting: regret and optimism balanced on intimate, intricate arrangement, as carefully poised as raindrops on guitar strings.
A multi-hyphenate with a cheeky sense of humor, Hayden is the son of a truck stop preacher and friends with Tim Heidecker, ran for Amarillo City Council at the age of 24 (and starred in a documentary about it), walked in a Gucci fashion show in November 2021, and is very entertaining and engaging via Instagram and Reddit with an active fanbase.

Released by Shiloh Records in 1978, 1966 was a curious album, the bucket of tunes contained only two songs in the Colonels’ regular repertoire while the rest was made up of finger lickin’ good covers and traditionals. This reissue expands the offering with some of their earliest known recordings, combining to form a full menu from a legendary band that ushered bluegrass into a more modern era!
The band, led by the virtuosic mandolin player Roland White, delivers a collection of traditional and original tunes that showcase their impeccable musicianship and tight harmonies.
Overall, the Kentucky Colonels' 1966 album is a must-listen for anyone who loves bluegrass music. It's a timeless classic that showcases some of the genre's finest musicians at their very best.
The Kentucky Colonels came along at a crucial time and helped usher bluegrass into a more modern era. Shorty’s Ark is a book for young readers, a collaborative effort between singer Will Oldham and graphic artist Lori Damiano, based on work by Oldham and musician Matt Sweeney. Drawing inspiration from the story of Noah, Shorty’s Ark names and pictures a wild variety of species to inform and engage an equal variety of young minds with the diversity that can be found around this great planet of ours. The flood stands as metaphor for current impending changes in our planet, and the story works as a springboard for understanding concepts of interdependency, diversity and extinction. Colorfully illustrating as many creatures and their places as possible, Shorty’s Ark is an earth-affirmative vision meant to stimulate the curiosity and passion of those who encounter it.
Will Oldham makes songs, mostly out of his home in Louisville, KY where he lives with his wife Elsa Hansen Oldham and their daughter, Poppy Jo. Increasingly, Oldham’s lyrics make sense. He loves partnering up in order to make the strongest work; it was partnership that yielded the song “Shorty’s Ark” (it can be heard on Matt Sweeney & Bonnie ‘Prince Billy ’s recently released Superwolves album), and his partnership with Lori Damiano that make this book what it is.
Lori Damiano is an illustrator/animator/textile artist based in Oregon. She loves to tell stories in pictures made out of paint, yarn, or pixels. A lot of the stories she draws are based on observing her fellow earthlings while aboard a skateboard, horse, or motorcycle.

The second collaborative album from Laetitia Sadier [Stereolab & solo] and Brazil's Mombojó. Release via Stereolab's Duophonic Super 45s imprint. Modern Cosmology is a musical ensemble composed of six individuals of the human race, none of which are cosmologists or astronomers, although Felipe S. - who sings and plays the guitar - knows quite a bit about reading astrological charts. He shares his frontperson duties with one Laetitia Sadier who, by virtue of her singer-songwriter career both as a solo artist and as part of the Stereolab ‘groop’, happens to be one of the key figures of her bandmates’ musical formation. Their paths first crossed when Marcelo - also on guitars - lent his amp for some of Laetitia’s solo concerts in Brazil under the condition that he got to meet his musical idol, and along came his brother Vicente - who plays the drums - and keyboardist Chiquinho. The four lads, plus Missionário José on bass, are collectively called Mombojó, an established band on the Brazilian alternative scene. So Laetitia and Mombojó started collaborating, they first made a song called “Summer Long”, a video for that song directed by their friend Alex Carvalho, and then later an artistic residency in the northeast of Brazil which spawned four more songs, collected in an EP that also bears the name “Summer Long” (2016) It was while making this EP that Laetitia suggested that the collaboration turned into a band in its own right, and when the time came to send it out to the world they decided to present themselves as Modern Cosmology. “C’est le vent”, the opening track on the EP, also has a video directed by Luan Cardoso: “What will you grow now?” started in late 2016 on a recording session Mombojó did on a motorboat up the Capibaribe river in their Recife hometown. The title track was recorded there and then during this fluvial jam session, and the other backing tracks were recorded about a year later at a recording studio at the local University, after which Laetitia had a bunch of new material to add words and melodies to, from her Brazilian friends and bandmates with love. Life happened, COVID happened, new albums by Laetitia and Mombojó also happened, and between this and that Modern Cosmology managed to get six new tracks ready for release. The band self -released their first two albums: Mattachine! (2006) and Bear Life (2009). These records caught the attention of indie -label-legends Fortuna Pop!, who released their third album, I Blame Society, in 2013. After FortunaPop! closed shop, The Ballet partnered with Fika Recordings, who released their 4th album, the critically acclaimed Matchy Matchy, in 2019. The Ballet have been joined by a few other musicians over the years including Ginger Brooks Takahashi and Michael O'Neill, who left in 2007 to join JD Sampson in MEN, as well as guest appearances on previous albums from Linton of The Aislers Set, Ramesh from Voxtrot, Scott Matthew, and Kaki King. In addition to citing Stephin Merritt as a formative influence, Goldberg who writes and home-records all of the band’s songs draws from an array of pop artists and periods; from 60’s bubblegum to 80’s synthpop and 90’s indiepop,. Goldberg gravitates towards upbeat tempos, major keys, and basic chords, using these restrictions to craft simple, catchy melodies while al so layering instruments in a way that keeps the ear engaged and rewards repeat listening. The relatively light and smooth sound of Daddy Issues sets the tone for Goldberg ’s unorthodox approach to his subject matter. As with previous Ballet albums, Daddy Issues offers a detail-rich examination of contemporary queer life, with a particular focus on the stigmatised desires, pleasures, and relations of gay men. Many queer artists have responded defensively to stigmatisation by asserting the political or psycholog ical value of queer sex. Goldberg’s approach is different. Rather than defending queer sex, he aims to capture some of its complexity and nuance. On Daddy Issues, Goldberg ’s songs describe the appeal but also the challenges of promiscuity and non -monogamy (“Eenie Meenie,” “Two Boyfriends”). His songs find humour in the mundane “dangers” of queer life (“I’m on Drugs,” “At the Bathhouse”) and in the queer juxtaposition of perversion and gentleness (“Daddy’s Boy,” “CumDumpMike”). An extramarital affair is treated with the levity of a teenage crush, and masculinity is characterised as both hot and somewhat tedious (“A Married Man”). The narrators of Goldberg’s songs are hedonists who go dancing all night, use illicit substances, and have anonymous, public sex, but they also express loneliness, regret, melancholy, and self -loathing (“Since You’ve Been Gone,” “The Fountain of Youth,” “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing”). To use such negative feelings to stigmatise gayness is homophobic, but so is denying their existence. Daddy Issues avoids both these pitfalls, instead capturing the co -existence of ecstasy and agony with humour, tenderness, and a lack of judgment. The album ’s title references a popular psychological diagnosis for people who are supposedly looking for surrogate fathers in their sexual or romantic partners, but it also suggests the issues of so -called daddies (older gay men). Rather than offering an ethnographic or autobiographical account of what it ’s like to be a daddy, Daddy Issues offers a meditation on the role of daddy, inviting listeners to imagine themselves in relation to it in various ways, while also questioning its coheren ce and stability. After all, nobody is born a daddy; it is something one becomes (or doesn ’t become), feels like (or doesn’t feel like), and is seen as (or isn’t seen as), if only for the duration of an album.
