For Noga Erez, there was never any doubt that, whatever music she chose to make, and whatever she felt about her homeland, she could never ignore her surroundings. After all, even escapism acknowledges there’s something to escape from, and at times – like many who’ve grown up in Tel Aviv – Erez has wanted to shut herself off from a world rendered beyond comprehension by forces beyond her control. Driven by pristine piano and rich strings, ‘Endless’ is sonically opulent with vivid, wonder-evoking pieces conveying wintry, widescreen panoramas and a propulsive arpeggio-fueled energy. Luca composed, arranged and played all instruments on ‘Endless’ himself – the violin, viola, violectra, cello and piano. It was produced by Martyn Heyne (who has worked with Nils Frahm, Lubomir Melnyk, Peter Broderick, Tiny Ruins and The
National), with additional production by the lauded DJ/musician Henrik Schwarz. D’Alberto graduated ‘summa cum laude’ with a Ministerial Mention at the Istituto Superiore di Studi Musicali G. Braga in Teramo, Abruzzo, where he was born and raised. Best Available Technology’s first album on wax. Exposure Therapy fuses muggy electronics, heavylidded rhythms and molten dub into abstract compositions that leverage the studio as an automated tool to siphon out an implied form of radical, rugged hip hop. Before the world of hip hop shrunk down to the size of a few websites, back when local radio stations were the trusted cultivators and keepers of regional sounds, New York City’s musical landscape was defined by two words: boom bap. That asphalt-hard sound stands in stark relief to the luxurious, glittering production that has dominated the airwaves in recent years, but New York’s original sound throws a long shadow and the specter of boom bap still lingers. Kevin Palmer is channeling those ghosts on Exposure Therapy, a sonic seance that lets ambient, dub, and boom bap bleed into each other forming a complex meditation on the golden age of New York hip hop. That distant era has served as a source of endless inspiration for Palmer’s production under the moniker Best Available Technology, and this is his grime-caked love letter to the faded memory of a grittier New York sound. Exposure Therapy is as expansive as it is intensely personal. Over the last three decades, Palmer has been experimenting with how to express a deep affection for a sound that was always thousands of miles away growing up and this is his distinctive vision of that era. Palmer’s abiding love for a specific moment in New York’s musical history is also riven with a looming anxiousness, as if he’s unsure of how best to act as a conduit for a time he experienced by proxy. The physical distance and insecurity lend something unique to Exposure Therapy, sounding as if the high-pitched peal of graffiti-covered subway cars and the persistent din of traffic endemic to boom bap-era New York were beamed to another world. 20 years! Daniel and Danny Chavis are natives of Raleigh/ Chapel Hill, North Carolina and East Village residents for the past 28 years. They are also co-founders of the groundbreaking band The Veldt, along with drummer Marvin Levi, who lifted their band’s name from a Ray Bradbury science fiction story. Musically reared in the church and juke-joints of their native southern state, the twins have been performing since they were children, listening to music that included gospel, Motown and Pink Floyd. Initially signed to Capitol Records in 1989, The Veldt embarked on a musical journey that changed their lives. The Skatalites brought the sound of Jamaica to the world. At the start of the 1960s, in the space of just a couple of years Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Johnny ‘Dizzy’ Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett and others defined the exciting beat of ‘Ska’ as the sound of newly independent Jamaica. As the house band at Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s newly launched Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road, the group comprising the finest jazz musicians on the island played on literally 1000s of recordings – Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and The Maytals, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis and many, many more. During their existence (1963-65) The Skatalites also recorded 100s of their own songs, released either under their own name, or The Studio One Orchestra, or that of band members Drummond, McCook etc. This is the first collection on Soul Jazz Records to bring you some of their finest material – from classics such as ‘Guns of Navarone’, ‘El Pussy Cat Ska’, ‘Christine Keeler’ through to some serious rarities such as Dizzy Johnny and The Studio One Orchestra’s ‘Sudden Destruction’ and Don Drummond’s ‘Coolie Boy’. The Skatalites’ ska sound brought together aspects of jazz, latin, rhythm and blues, protoRastafarianism (tracks such as ‘Full Dread’, ‘Beardsman Ska’) and more. The intensity and energy of their sound was matched by the experimentation of the troubled genius of Don Drummond whose ‘far east’ modal trombone sound added a complex melancholy to the music of the Skatalites (the group split-up after Drummond was charged with murdering his wife, dancer Margarita Mahfood). This album was originally released as a limited-edition Record Store Day collectors 7-inch box set (now deleted) and is now available for the first time as a double LP edition, CD and digital release complete with 10 extra bonus tracks and new extensive sleeve notes.

Originally from the north of the Sweden, Åsa moved to Gothenburg after high school, starting a feminist punk band before turning inward and recording what would become her debut self-titled EP on a broken computer at home. A collection of three eerily incandescent blasts recounting the age-old tale of love at first sight was the result. Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, THE STEEL WHEELS are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound. In fact, they’ve been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade. Yet, their name also evokes a sense of forward motion, which is clearly reflected in their latest album, Wild As We Came Here. The Steel Wheels recorded their album in rural Maine, where producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter) owns a recording studio inside a renovated farmhouse from the 18th century. All four band members – Trent Wagler (guitar, banjo), Eric Brubaker (fiddle), Brian Dickel (upright bass) and Jay Lapp (mandolin) – hunkered down for a week and a half to create Wild As We Came Here. The band’s name is a tip of the hat to steam-powered trains, industrial progress and the buggies of their Mennonite lineage. Their musical style weaves through Americana and bluegrass, folk and old-time music, and the acoustic poetry of the finest singer-songwriters. By incorporating percussion and keyboards into their recording sessions for the first time, Wild As We Came Here adds new textures to their catalog, as themes of discovery and perseverance run throughoute collection.

Ikonika’s third album ‘Distractions’ builds on 2013’s ‘Aerotropolis’, and the title answers the question “Why has the album taken so long?” In the last few years she’s been building up a strong CV of remixes, from Chvurches to Dawn Richard, Austra and Junior Boys, as well as DJing and working on ‘Distractions’. ‘Distractions’ distils the character of Ikonika’s music productions across a wider set of styles than previous albums, and she subtly fuses and switches elements from contrasting genres, giving the whole set a uniqueness and consistency that puts it in its own lane. Furthermore what sits at the centre of ‘Distractions’ more than ever is her love of R&B and hip hop, in all its forms, which has opened the door to bring in a selection of guests in a way she’s not fully explored before. From the full throttle blend of grime and 80s synth soul ‘Noblest’ with Andrea Galaxy, to the reflective ‘Sacrifice’ with up and coming MC Jammz, a slowjam that merges dubstep with hip house drums. The final vocal track is the languid ‘Hazefield’ co-produced with Sweyn J and featuring Jessy Lanza on vocals. Its mix of mechanic clunk and minimalist, lulling funk could only happen in 2017. The LP artwork takes its inspiration from West London’s Golden Mile, a stretch of the Great West Road where the A4 meets the M4, and the road takes on the character of the arcade game Poll Position, with art deco factories and illuminated, hi-tech signage selling lifestyle products. It’s this kind of mix of futuristic and industrious with a touch of gentle glamour that the album exudes.

These days, to leave even the briefest of imprints on the everincreasingly saturated orbit of dance music can be considered a feat in itself. To make a lasting mark, however, one that manages to cut through the onslaught of new music and artist profiles on spotlight each day, is another accomplishment entirely. Cue Dauwd, the USborn, Wales-raised artist who’s been releasing music for nearly 6 years on such noted labels as Ghostly International and Kompakt, and whose debut album Theory of Colours will be released via Ninja Tune imprint Technicolour Records this May 26th. Dauwd Al Hilali’s releases have been met with as much expectation as they have intrigue. Spending the last few years out of the limelight and in his Berlin studio, Dauwd’s music has continued to ripple through clubs as his singular, sometimes thrillingly uncertain process of experimentation has continued. Pulling inspiration from electronic music legends like Terry Riley, Raymond Scott, and the seminal Radiophonic Workshop period in the late 50’s and 60’s, Dauwd’s 2017 LP draws a unique line between influences as disparate as hazy Detroit house and early German Krautrock. A skilled musical engineer, Dauwd’s ability to balance between such sprawling genres is, paradoxically, an exercise in restriction, finding creative freedom in limiting his own gear. It’s clear he’s no stranger to focus; sonically, Theory of Colours runs tightly wound, its loops intentional and layers meticulously built. Spanning a succinct forty minutes across seven tracks, Dauwd’s fondness for delays and love for vintage synthesizers characterize much of the album, which was recorded over the course of a year primarily in a Utrecht studio that houses one of the largest collections of vintage synths and other modular equipment in all of Europe. The result is an intricate, scintillating journey that hovers between familiar and strange. For many artists, that enigmatic gap is one that’s anxiously avoided-- the fear of misidentity as a musician more important than the music itself. Throughout Theory of Colours, it’s a space Dauwd comfortably renders as his own.

Overview Monumental symphonic versions of Carl Craig’s’ classic material, re-enforced and magnified by Les Siecles Orchestra. Iconic French conductor François-Xavier Roth is at the helm of the symphony whilst InFiné mainstay Francesco Tristano supports on piano. From an initial recording in 2010, the project evolved into a full album that has been tweaked further in the studio by Craig himself. The re-works reveal the timelessness of `At Les´ and `Darkness´ through tense yet fragile new arrangements, along with two original compositions by Tristano – ‘Barcelona Trist’ and ‘The Melody’. ‘Ba Versus first took form as a captivating live concert on May 18th, 2008 at Paris’ Cité de la Musique, featuring this very same line-up. The hedonism of club culture made a rare incursion into the hallowed grounds of more serious traditional music, merging the vocabularies and syntaxes of two genres that seem to be from their own faraway galaxies, but actually turned out to be more porous than expected as they collided into one another. A bemused Carl Craig recalls that the “audience stopped just short of snapping their fingers to the rhythm. Everyone was literally on the verge of dancing, and François-Xavier was getting his first li taste of that thrill that DJs get when they are playing for a room. We were like two kids rummaging through a candy shop – I toured him through my universe and he showed me his.” The album’s release is also set to coincide with the launch of the Versus Synthesiser Ensemble, a back-to-basics live performance featuring six synthesisers and a piano, as directed by Craig. Detroit’s Movement Festival will be the tour’s launching pad, allowing for the possible grafting of a full symphonic orchestra as time progresses. The Versus universe is thus one that is predicated on transforming, remixing and reinterpreting, on creating of new forms of expression, but also on breaking down hierarchies to confront genres and worlds that seem further apart than they really are. An optimistic, if not idealistic project, with a title that was perfectly chosen to echo Carl’s mantra: “the point is to change the audience’s perceptions, to surprise people, but also blow the dust off the conventional wisdom about music, its place in the world, and its audience – without demagoguery and with fresh and new arguments.”

GROTTO – AT LAST Odion Livingstone present another essential reissue of a rare gem from the Nigerian archives, Grotto’s lost Afrorock classic from 1977, ‘At Last’. Formed at “Greg’s” (St Gregory’s college in Ikoyi, Lagos), Grotto came up at the same time as several other influential student bands based there, including Ofege. “As Grotto, we played a rock/funk fusion. We were probably aged 15, 16 or thereabouts and we were heavily into music; we listened to Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and lots of rock bands,” explains lead guitarist Soga Benson.
Their debut album is a heavyweight trip, drifting from psychedelic workouts to crunching breaks and funkier directions. “Odion Iruoje was the A&R manager at EMI at the time and he auditioned us, liked the material and signed us. He also produced our recordings,” continues Benson. “Most of us were boarders and the school encouraged music and had instruments so we had time to jam and really gel together. The group still continued after we left Gregs. We had to juggle A-Levels with gigs and we used to skip school whenever we had a show, rehearsal or a recording date.” While many Nigerian student bands were studio-based projects, Grotto was an active live unit during the ‘70s. “We played at The Shrine with Fela, with Tee Mac at Batakoto, with Sonny Okosun at Kakadu, Segun Bucknor at Granada Hotel.” This first international reissue of Grotto’s debut album comes with a full interview with Soga Benson and producer Odion Iruoje + a selection of rare and previously unseen photos of the band. The album is fully remastered by The Carvery.

Leather Girls first unleashed their ferocious style of garage rock upon their hometown of Austin, Texas in 2015 after Erik Camacho (guitar/lead vox) and Mike Garrido (guitar/vox) met and bonded over their shared affinity for Billy Childish, 60s garage punk, Los Dug Dugs, and obscure tropicalia. The timing was perfect as Mike had just moved from New Orleans, and Erik was looking for a new project in Austin after his garage-punk band from San Antonio, Low Times, had just played its final show. The songs came about almost immediately, and Dillon Fernandez was soon added into the mix on drums along with Deborah White on bass. The four-piece quickly garnered a reputation for their high energy live performances featuring a distinctive range of blistering fuzz, punk, and psych-- all accented with a hint of homegrown Texas twang. On United Waters… Somewhere back in the early 2000s, I encountered Mouthus, duo of Brian Sullivan and Nate Nelson, in a tiny drop-ceiling storefront venue somewhere in California’s Central Valley. The burly Sullivan and less ectomorphic Nelson lugged a drum kit and a full-size Marshall stack into the tiny, 300-square-foot room, slammed a half dozen Red Bulls, and, after pacing wildeyed for a few minutes, blasted off into a torn-up, arena-volume sonic catastrophe that drove basically everyone immediately out onto the sidewalk. From what I could tell, it was a typical night. As releases piled up, Mouthus ripped apart the rulebook of assumed “noise rock,” building disintegrating towers of sound just as easily as murmured acoustic mantras. As the twenty-naughts melted into the twenty-teens, Mouthus collapsed into oblivion. Soon after, Sullivan re-emerged with a series of head-scratching, melodic and murky sets as Eskimo King that traced the gentler facets of Mouthus into pop oblivion. This quickly evolved into United Waters, a shattering and re-stitching of Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac-oid song craft that was as cracked and strangely woven as Mouthus’ previous deconstruction of excess wattage. In 2011, Arbitrary Signs released United Waters’ debut, Your First Ever River, showcasing Sullivan’s murmuring vocals in settings that strangely echo New Zealand perennial Peter Jefferies as much as they do sunny West Coast coke rock. Swiftly following this release, Patrick Cole (KHF) joined his similarly off-axis guitar and skewed songwriting with Sullivan’s. Together, the two forged a new United Waters, a murky tangle of dueling guitars, hissy dissonance and skeletal forms. With its album Sunburner, United Waters added Chris Shields (Mr. Transylvania, Alien Trilogy) on drums, creating a sound that, while notably “rock”, maintained the dusty haze and muttered delivery of Sullivan’s uniquely personal vision. The Narrows: On its new album The Narrows, United Waters removes the aural fog covering its earlier releases with a luminescent view of its song craft. This new transparency has an airy clarity that highlights the outfit’s woozy guitars in microscopic detail. Rock is present, but the album’s rhythm section lingers behind in a deep distance creating the group’s most stark and intimate release to date. With proof from bare-bones ballads like “Least Turn” and “Move the Distance”, categorizing United Waters with other demented pop margin walkers such as ‘90s Siltbreeze Records, Hall of Fame, and The Tall Dwarfs is all too easy. However, United Waters resemble anything but a “pop sensibility” as their raw materials are too willfully damaged, busted up and taped together to transmit such a style. Still, reasonable facsimiles of said influence do exist. The track “Even the Moon” is reminiscent of nothing less than a Nikki Sudden demo cassette grinding through a cheap tape deck while “Mile Wide” recasts choruspedal proto-goth as a 4AD 12” with the grooves pressed off-center. The album’s title track ultimately has the last word with its swirling, off-key leads uncoiling in a shambling crescendo that re-conjures Sullivan’s earlier demolition works. Though never quite attaining a full-on climax, the song’s exquisite restraint caps the album with a locked-down coda that lingers far longer than its noise-rock antecedents, opting instead to offer its heavy hurricane winds in slow motion. __________________________________________________________________ Ulrika Spacek return with the release of their second album. Much like their debut album released in early 2016, the band chose to record, produce and mix the entirety of the record in their shared house. The relatively short amount of time between their first and second albums is testament to the band’s self-contained creative environment and the productivity it encourages. There’s a tendency to label this degree of self-reliant creativity ‘DIY’ - and the band do certainly feel emboldened by that ethos - yet to consider Modern English Decoration solely in these terms is a disservice. Their craft is considered and purposeful, the means of its production reflecting the band’s overall vision rather than the value system of an often haphazard and accidental DIY culture. Given the lyrics often favour abstraction and the vocals can be more impressionistic than declarative, the album title itself offers perhaps the most telling entry point to the record. In part, it’s a self-effacing play on an interior design cliché that references the meticulous creative processes the band adheres to. Unsurprisingly given the context of its creation, Modern English Decoration might be considered a companion piece of sorts to The Album Paranoia.But there are crucial differences. Most notably, this isn’t the work of the initial Ulrika Spacek conceptualised by Edwards and Williams in Berlin – Modern English Decoration is the band as five rather than two people, and it shows. Those who have witnessed the intensity of their live show will instantly recognise the merits in this. The bass and drums provide a versatile anchor, at once soft, then aggressive, while the vocals drift woozily in and out, like druggy hindsight or skewed premonition. With three guitarists in the band guitars were always going to be central to the music, but what is less expected is the dynamic interplay between the trio. What’s more, the absence of reverb is integral, in part attributable to the ambience of the studio, but also a conscious decision in order to add focus. And focus is the abiding term: this is an album designed to be just so - a 45 minute commitment, a surrender.

Night Eyes is the tenth full length album by the reclusive mudboy, and his first in seven
years. A key member of the early 2000's free-folk and experimental music scene coming out of Providence, Rhode Island, mudboy is largely identified with modified analog electronic keyboards and a live shows featuring shamanistic performances and DIY pyrotechnics. For Night Eyes, mudboy converted a massive pipe organ in Dortmund, Germany, into an electro-acoustic instrument, at its time, the largest of its kind in the world. The subject of the musical composition is Wes Craven's 1984 film: A Nightmare on Elm Street and fea tures key motifs and elements from that soundtrack. With Peter Schuette (Psychobuildings, Silk Flowers) at his side, mudboy takes you through a dreamscape of horrific liminal states and uncanny motifs. This limited edition pressing features hand numbered silver silkscreen covers with eyeholes burned through it, a large 23" x 34" newsprint poster, and an elaborate monograph by the artist on the subject of dreams and the uncanny in sound.

Multa Nox ‘Living Pearl’ Cassette / Digital Multa Nox is the recording and performance project of Sally Decker, New York City-based musician and writer. ‘Living Pearl,’ her latest release for NNA Tapes, thoughtfully explores the nexus between music and emotion, using vivid electronics as a portal of connection between the mind and the heart. Decker’s backgrounds in music, poetry, and sound art all work in conjunction to create a harmonious sonic environment where light and darkness ebb and flow throughout one another, finding a highly personal voice among the diverse lineage of ambient music. Through her use of the synthesizer, Decker investigates the way the evocative qualities of electronic music can elicit emotional responses from the listener, constructing understated melodic phrases that are ripe with warmth and nostalgia, like looking at a faded family photograph. These ascending and descending lines of varying texture and tone shift fluidly across each other, coming in and out of focus in layers in a manner similar to that of visual art or cinema. Multa Nox works with a refreshing purity where all elements mesh into a singular whole, rather than focusing on separate components of technology to convey ideas. The resulting melodies are like clusters of beautiful simplicity that float throughout a colorful landscape, like cells that make up a larger musical organism. Rhythmic devices are introduced subtly, creating a propulsion and momentum that carries the composition forward, never erupting into the driving force of a proper beat, but rather acting as a biological pulse that gives life to the music.

Decker injects further humanity into her compositions by utilizing acoustic elements as well, such as human speech and field recordings. By obscuring and abstracting her own voice through techniques such as whispers and cut-up dissections, Decker produces fragments of enunciation that function as textural rather than narrative elements. Wren Kitz ‘Dancing On Soda Lake’ Cassette / Digital NNA Tapes is very pleased to present the latest full-length recording from Burlington, Vermont artist Wren Kitz. Following up his debut album ‘For Evelyn’ back in 2015, ‘Dancing On Soda Lake’ continues confidently in the unique and personal style of music that Wren has carved out for himself over the years. By blending traditional guitarand-voice songwriting with field recording and tape collage experiimentation, Kitz has developed a ghostly and contemplative form of musical expression all his own that breaks down walls between genre categorizations. Together with a newly-assembled band consisting of percussion and strings, ‘Dancing On Soda Lake’ is Kitz’s most full-realized and captivating effort to date. With a recurring aqueous motif both lyrically and sonically, ‘Dancing On Soda Lake’ captures this essence elegantly throughout the gentle impermanence of it’s luminous song cycle, flowing freely back and forth between beauty and mystery, not unlike our own plasmic origins. Wren’s sensitive vocal delivery drifts carefully between loose, rhythmic tempos and plucks of the guitar, punctuated by swells of percussion and heart-wrenching harmonies from the bass, cello, and violin.
