A MAD MENAGERIE OF GRINDHOUSE GO-GO GROOVES! Girl In Gold Boots is Ted V. Mikels’ (The Corpse Grinders) homage to the time tested “small town girl moves to the big city to become a go-go dancer” story. And if a movie is ostensibly about go-go dancing, then we’re gonna need some music to go-go to. And that’s what this album you’re now holding is all about. From the odd psych rocker “Do You Want To Laugh Or Cry,” to a frenetic barrage of country soul. It’s got some solid harmonica groovers, an odd xmas song and of course the banger of a title track! Many of the songs here, performed by Larry Cartell, appeared on B & B’s tiny Glenolden Records label, which issued a mere seven 7” singles in ’67/‘68. Nine of the songs featured here were on those 45s - Jerry Wallace’s “That’s The Fool In Me,” Cartell’s “Girl In Gold Boots,” “Jimmy’s Girl,” “Wheels Of Love,” “My Careless Heart,” “Sin,” and “Cowboy Santa,” plus Danny Welton’s “Julie” and “Strobelights” - Welton was a harmonica player whom we’ll assume is playing on all these tracks; he also produced a few harmonica instruction LPs along with sides for Dot, Coral, and Del-Fi. Also featured is Joe Valino’s 1959 fantastic “(Everything I Touched Turned To) Gold,” which later became a hit on the Belgian Popcorn dance scene. Combine them all with some Nicholas Carras cool Crime Jazz cues and you’ve got quite a romp. Now, go don your gold boots, and get ready to boogaloo. Go, baby, go! GO!!! Pressed on colored vinyl, and includes a DVD of the entire film with lots of extras!

True studio albums of Ra with the Arkestra are rare on this planet or beyond. This studio saucer is an interplanetary interpreter, here to convert even the faintest of heart to the sounds of Sun Ra. Recorded with Arkestra veterans at the same NY studio that hosted countless Sun Ra sessions since the late 60s, this first ever reissue of Celestial Love contains the only known recordings of the titular track and “Blue Intensity,” plus a cut not on the original Saturn LP! The music here is mostly "inside Ra." In fact, it's one of the most accessible albums in the Ra canon. One of Ra's early heroes, Duke Ellington, is represented twice with "Sophisticated Lady" and "Drop Me Off In Harlem," and two other standards ("Smile" and "Sometimes I'm Happy," both sung by June Tyson) are given snappy Ra arrangements. Though Sun Ra was renowned for outrageous music and performances, Celestial Love is a reminder that he was a man of many moods, with a deep respect for jazz history. His embrace of Futurism never implied a rejection of the past. Even rocket ships were constructed with raw materials discovered eons ago.

GRINDIN’ & DRIVIN’ GARAGE PUNK? This 1966 live recording provides the first evidence of Lothar And The Hand People's previous life as a feral gang of rough-hewn, guitar-based garage rockers. From ferocious turns on traditional blues tunes to the Hand People’s custom-built snarling rave-up originals, Come Along captures some of the most electrifying moments from the period before they followed their electronic inclinations down a freakier path.
Denver's Exodus club was a cut above the junior beer joints. It had already earned a reputation as a top-tier stop on the national folk music circuit, hosting everyone from Judy Collins to Bob Dylan. But the times, they were a-changin', and Lothar And The Hand People became the first rockers ever to soil the stage of the storied folk den. When the world at large met Lothar And The Hand People they were electronic rock explorers, but in their first evolutionary phase captured here, they were pounding out songs that kept patrons boozing and boogieing. The Hand People’s set runs the gamut from Van Morrison's Them-era career-maker "Gloria" and Wilson Pickett's 1965 smash "In The Midnight Hour" to the ballsy stomper of a title track that wouldn't have sounded out of place at a Velvet Underground gig, and other early originals showing that the boys were starting to write their way out of the garage.

STREET DATE: MAY 29, 2020 These two 1973 concerts take place about two weeks after the Dead added a large number of new, jazzy numbers to their repertoire, one of which (“Eyes of the World”) plays a central role in both shows excerpted here (though these are not complete shows, only one song, “Deal,” that was played either of these nights does not appear here in at least in one version). As usual, it’s the medleys that hold the most jaw-dropping feats of improvisational derring-do; the first night’s “Dark Star/Eyes of the World/Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” is seamlessly sublime (or is that sublimely seamless?), while the second night’s “Truckin’/ The Other One/Eyes of the World/”Morning Dew” covers a prodigious amount of terrain, from raucous to frenzied to lilting to lyrical in the space of nearly one glorious hour. Also noted with pleasure is the appearance of “Box of Rain,” which the Dead performed live sparingly. Presented in HDCD sound!

This Dick’s Picks volume captures the Dead right in the thick of the legendary 1974 Wall of Sound tour and only two months away from leaving the road for a year-and-a-half hiatus. The Wall of Sound was, of course, the massive sound system designed by Owsley “Bear” Stanley that was so meticulously constructed that, for example, each string of Phil Lesh’s bass had its own speaker (and was so daunting to transport and assemble that it was dismantled after the tour). The result was a crystal-clear sound that to this day stirs controversy among the band’s fans. It certainly complemented and even encouraged the band’s continued move away from the country-rock of Workingman’s Dead towards a jazz fusion sound best expressed by the two epic versions of “Playing in the Band” found here. As opposed to most Dick’s Picks collections, this four-disc set offers highlights from three consecutive nights of shows rather than presenting shows in their entirety; the result is that each disc stands on its own as a musical statement. Highly rated by aficionados, and possibly the best Wall of Sound set of shows available, in HDCD sound to boot.

The Reverse is a North London guitar band making an urgent and literate style of indierock that’s been likened to “Belle and Sebastian meets Pulp meets Lloyd Cole”. Recorded as the band performed together, to capture the essence of their live sets, Which Way Out moves through energetic rock songs to more delicate acoustic laments, offering nuanced tone shifts through emotional and stylistic ranges. Frontman and lyricist Nathan Loughran’s delivery veers from anger and sarcasm to vulnerability and compassion, unsurprising with influences including iconic purveyors of the raw and laid bare truth, such as Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. Which Way Out opens with the fury of the reverb drenched and darkly caustic track ‘Crush My Chest With Your Hate’, which laments a culture of hate and envy . Whilst the sardonic ‘Nobody Likes You, Everybody Hates You’ explores all that divides us in increasingly binary terms, with a deliciously darkly humoured swipe at everyone. ‘Abstract Heart’ is another heavier rockedged track, to a backdrop of chugging Wire-esque riffs the anti-love song celebrates the broken people destroyed by the lessthan-perfect reality of the romantic dream. Elsewhere on the album there’s hints of classic observational song-writing, with ‘Nothing on Telly’ offering a kind of kitchen sink storytelling realism worthy of Pulp. Whilst tracks like ‘Kill Us All’ recall the aforementioned David Devant & His Spirit Wife and The Auteurs with its tongue in cheek misanthropy (“You seem nice, you talk a lot but I don’t need new friends when I hate the ones I’ve got” – Kill Us All). Then there are more fragile and naked moments such as ‘A Vague Arrangement’ and ‘Skimming Stones’, both take Loughran’s laid-bare honesty that runs through the veins of Which Way Out but laced with a gentler, more compassionate touch, aided on the former track by the introduction of Teresa Kelly’s delicate and moving vocal. The songs explore the vulnerability of falling in love and the fragility of the human existence. Berlin based composer and producer Ben Lukas Boysen returns with his most progressive and shape-shifting work to date, the long awaited Mirage, on 1 May 2020 with Erased Tapes. The third album to be penned under his own name proceeding his Hecq moniker, Mirage follows 2013’s Gravity and the acclaimed 2016 full length Spells, a record as much admired by his peers as it was loved by fans that not only yielded remixes from Max Cooper and Tim Hecker, but also opened Jon Hopkins’ Late Night Tales compilation. Since the release of Spells, Ben continued to be in demand for his scoring abilities, collaborating with cellist and composer Sebastian Plano on the music for David OReilly’s landmark innovative video game Everything. It was added to the long list for the Best Animated Short at the 90th Academy Awards, making it the first video game to qualify for an Oscar. In 2019 Ben contributed to the Brainwaves project alongside fellow Erased Tapes artists Michael Price and Högni Egilsson in collaboration with a team of scientists at Goldsmiths University, London — linking states of consciousness and music. He also scored the soundtrack to the DAFF award-winning German TV show Beat, the feature film The Collini Case, and co-composed the music for the short film Manifesto with Nils Frahm, starring Cate Blanchett. As with Gravity and Spells, Ben has an array of musical guests adorning Mirage, including long time collaborator, Berlin based cellist and composer Anne Müller as well as Australian saxophonist and composer Daniel Thorne — for whom Ben wrote parts specifically, having heard his 2019 solo debut Lines of Sight. Lead track Medela features both and takes the listener on a kaleidoscopic journey that slides with ease across sonic terrains. By the end it’s difficult to tell what exactly was heard; “I wanted to experiment with blending these recordings with 100% artificial elements, often to points where an instrument becomes an abstraction of what it was and the musicians’ presence in the song is much more of an important DNA string in the song rather than an obvious layer.” Mirage, like its title suggests, feels like a sonic optical illusion — each piece containing sounds and techniques bent and processed to make them seem overexposed; the overly felt-y piano on Clarion, Daniel Thorne’s saxophone on Medela, the single note voice of Lisa Morgenstern splitting into different chords on Empyrean. It is detectable but also easily missed, like the double piano on Kenotaph that could be perceived as one, but is actually two pianos in two different rooms, separate countries even — one is digital while the other is acoustic. In the early 1980s, Washington, DC, boasted one of the world’s most vital and distinguished hardcore punk communities. Home to Minor Threat, Dischord Records and an ascetic straight-edge lifestyle that disdained booze, sex, and drugs, the city was heralded for its loud, fast music and righteous, left-leaning politics. Hailing from the unhip suburb of Ashton, Maryland, No Trend presented a sneering alternative to that sanctimonious ethos. Cynical, surreal, and eager to call attention to the hypocrisy of both Middle American norms and supposedly free-thinking subcultures, the band mercilessly baited its audience, dressed in atro-
ciously kitschy clothing, and antagonized fans and foes with grinding dirges and contemptuous, tragicomic lyrics. Despite much local hostility, the group managed to make a name for itself nationally, touring often and gigging with the likes of the Dead Kennedys, Sonic Youth, T.S.O.L., Hüsker Dü, The Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers, Soundgarden, and countless others. This compilation covers No Trend’s early records: the first LP, Too Many Humans, and two versions of the “Teen Love” EP. The inserts and ephemera from the original releases have been recreated to produce true facsimiles of these vinyl
documents. The attendant CDs also tack on the group’s first demo tape and a live performance from the period. These artifacts defined No Trend’s sound and image in 1983 and 1984, and are largely how the band is remembered today. The booklet accompanying the music was painstakingly assembled from a variety of sources, and it includes photos, show flyers, contemporaneous fanzine reviews, and interviews with leader Jeff Mentges and No Trend’s other surviving founder, Bob Strasser. The box also contains the infamous No Trend “dance” books (presumed lost until recently), as well as several other surprises.

Hinds are a four-piece garage-pop band based in Madrid, Spain consisting of Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass, backing vocals) and Amber Grimbergen (drums). Overview Your Hero Is Not Dead is full of supremely crafted pop songs about moral, political, and ethical grey areas. Recorded alongside his close friend and producer Nathan Jenkins (aka Bullion), they find Westerman attempting to resolve external issues by looking inward. Like a young Peter Gabriel in a late-stage-capitalist world, Westerman’s music falls somewhere between artful soft rock and confessional electronic pop. OVERVIEW GENE is the new album from LA Priest. GENE follows up the brilliant Inji – Sam Eastgate's debut album as LA Priest, his first for Domino and his first solo output following the disbanding of former group, Late Of The Pier. The album also follows Eastgate’s 2016 instant cult-classic collaboration project with Connan Mockasin, Soft Hair. After a recent nomadic hibernation and the search for an alternative to the structure and rigor of standard drum machines, Eastgate built GENE, his own unique instrument. A task that took the better part of six months, GENE allowed Eastgate to channel his inspirations into music and create his most complete realization of LA Priest yet. The crunch and texture conjured on GENE are assisted by keyboards, guitar and, every so often, live drums. Coaxed into life with the juicy groove of “Beginning”, the record struts and sparkles through “Rubber Sky” and “What Moves” towards the melancholic interlude of “Sudden Thing” and the gigantic noise of centerpiece “Monochrome”, taking a sharp turn in the final third towards something darker and more mystical.

Alright, let’s just get this part out of the way: Muzz is a new band comprised of three gentlemen you probably know from other bands. Paul Banks is the singer in Interpol, has a project with The RZA called Banks + Steelz, and has released records as a solo artist. Matt Barrick played drums for Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Walkmen, and you’ve likely seen him on tour with Fleet Foxes. Josh Kaufman is a third of the folk group Bonny Light Horseman and has his producer mitts all over esteemed recordings by The National, Bob Weir, The Hold Steady, The War on Drugs, and many more. Paul + Matt + Josh = Muzz. OK, phew. The resulting songs are dark and gorgeous, expansive and sparse, like Cormac McCarthy prose stretched across a cowboy painting of a sunset. “Bad Feeling” chimes and slinks with a touch of Bryan Ferry panache as Barrick’s kick drum pushes the tune along and Kaufman’s Rhodes fills the space. “Evergreen” features Banks’s vocal doubling down on Kaufman’s gorgeous slide guitar melody, and “Patchouli” and “Summer Love” burrow and twinkle psychedelically. There are upstart rockers like “Red Western Sky” and “Knuckleduster” and jazz-beat drum showcases like “How Many Days” and “All Is Dead To Me,” but no matter the sonic direction Muzz go, they go there as if effortlessly and with maximum emotional, cosmic charge. “I don’t ever write with the intention of giving records an overarching theme, as that feels very limiting,” Banks says. “But looking back, I think the through line for me is meditations on mental health, and the quest for happiness and the way in which the mind can play tricks on us. But, ultimately, the music speaks for itself. We have a genuine, organic artistic chemistry together. It’s partly a shared musical taste from youth, as with me and Josh, but then it’s also the souls of my friends that resonate with me when expressed through music. I think it’s cosmic.”

IN HIS SHORT CAREER PHIL SEYMOUR was hailed by Shelter Records founders Leon Russell and Denny Cordell, received production offers from Phil Spector, played with Tom Petty, Chris Spedding, the Textones, Roy Orbison and Del Shannon, and counted among his friends and fans people from the worlds of power pop, roots rock, New Wave and indie Rock. With kindred spirit Dwight Twilley, Phil forged a determination to bring back melodic pop songs. They spent several years mastering harmony, piano, guitar, drums and the art of crafting a high-quality song, building a home studio where they spent endless hours recording under the name Oister. In 1974 they set off for Los Angeles and renamed themselves the Dwight Twilley Band. Soon they were in the US Top 20 with ‘I’m On Fire’, but frustrations followed as Shelter dealt with financial difficulties, and Phil decided to go solo. Initially he struggled to find a foothold but once the new wave hit America, the Phil Seymour Band stormed Hollywood and became one of the hottest acts on the circuit. Signed to Neil Bogart’s Boardwalk label, by 1981 Phil was at #22 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with the self-penned classic ‘Precious To Me’. More terrific releases followed until his untimely death from cancer. IF YOU DON’T WANT MY LOVE / ARCHIVE SERIES 6, contains 8 previously unreleased tracks recorded prior to his record deal with Boardwalk, including productions by Denny Cordell and Phil Spector. These spirited masters and demos with songs by John Prine, Dwight Twilley, Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, provide insight into the creative process of the early days of the Phil Seymour band and the development of his first two albums.

On the heels of his stellar memoir Time Flowing Backwards, voted by Pitchfork as one of the 10 best music books of 2019, legendary New Zealand musician Graeme Jefferies’ next chapter in sound -- Trouble Again in this Town -- is at last ready to go. This is Jefferies’ first new Cakekitchen release in 4 years and the first domestic release in the USA in 9 years. The album continues the wayward path first exposed by his early Flying Nun solo album Messages for the Cakekitchen, but manages to cross the border of limitations imposed by old 1980s technology so that his familiar messages become something new altogether. The album was recorded on a portable 16 track that Graeme transports from one end of the globe to the other. It retains touchstones to his past work but still sounds up to date and current at the same time. He utilizes fragments of TEAC 4 track “found sound” recordings to masterful effect and wedges original musical pieces into unexpected and interesting places. The new material is reminiscent at times of his groundbreaking work with New Zealand pioneers This Kind of Punishment. Graeme plays all the instruments on the release (guitar, piano, viola, cello, drums, bass) and recorded all the songs over a period of years in various houses and hallways in New Zealand, Germany and Australia. His meticulous “take as long as it takes” approach to making records ensures a very wide pallet of sound. A rainbow of colors can be heard in his music, and although the material was initially conceived on either guitar or piano, by the time he has completed a recording, the arrangement is usually pretty special—complex and unlike any other person’s version of man at the microphone -- one with no deadline and all the time in the world. In recent years, The Cakekitchen has concentrated primarily on the European market where Graeme lived and worked for a number of years. Although a lot of his older work has been re-released recently by Superior Viaduct and Dias in the USA, this is the first domestic release of new material in America in quite some time. Trouble Again in this Town taps a similar vein from Graeme’s landmark Cakekitchen albums released by Homestead and Merge and is a welcome addition to his catalogue of music. A new two piece live version of the group featuring Brett Jones of the Nocturnal Projections toured Germany and Belgium in April of 2019, playing a large cross section of Cakekitchen, This Kind of Punishment and Nocturnal Projections songs to appreciative audiences. Graeme and Brett continue to work on new material together and plan to tour again this year. The two piece (turn on a dime) line up, first showcased in the USA with French multi- instrumentalist Jean-Yves Douet, suits the live format of the group and works well on the new material as well. The Cakekitchen have released 15 full-length albums and several ep’s throughout the span of their career, producing some of the most dynamic and unique music to come out of New Zealand, Europe, and the US during the 1990’s and early 2000’s. With Trouble Again in this Town, Graeme continues his prolific arc of stellar songwriting while producing a unique sonic soundscape for these anxious times in which we live. OVERVIEW London based alternative pop project Jockstrap are sharing their debut Warp EP following their signing and single release, ‘Acid’ from earlier this year. Jockstrap’s instigators Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye have enjoyed a remarkable 18 months since launching their 2018 debut mini-album Love Is the Key to the City and subsequently sharing its beautifully disorienting remix version Lost My Key In The ❤️ Club ❤️ in 2019. Ellery has starred in Cornish film BAIT (which went on to win a BIFA award and won Outstanding Debut at the BAFTAs) and - alongside Cornish-Welsh artist Gwenno - performed the film’s score live on 17 Jan at the BFI. Skye, on the other hand, has developed his own much-lauded solo project and remixed the sublime new album from Arizona’s Injury Reserve (who Jockstrap toured with in the U.K. last year) in its entirety. Ellery has also collaborated with Underworld on their ongoing experimental project, DRIFT. Both Ellery and Skye wrote and performed on Dean Blunt’s 2018 Soul On Fire mixtape (also featuring A$AP Rocky & Mica Levi) Jockstrap were also asked to collaborate and perform at Africa Express’ sold-out one-off show in a circus tent in Walthamstow last year.

James Alexander Bright's music is as visual a voyage as it is a sonic one; a kaleidoscope of colours that swirl, swoon, soar and sing. Stepping into his musical world is a multi-sensory experience, one where smooth grooves, wonky rhythms, dreamy melodies and immersive atmospheres coalesce to form their own sphere. “Sound as vision,” says Bright of the audio aesthetic he relates to and aims for. “Music you can bite into.” Based in the Hampshire countryside and an illustrator by day, Bright’s world is often a dual one but one where elements overlap and inform one another. “I spend a lot of my day creating things visually and everyday life can be an assault on the senses, ”says Bright.“ Evening is my quiet time; time for my ears. Invariably I’m inspired by the things that people and creatures do in the dark. ”This creative duality extends beyond just the visual and the music too. It’s found deep rooted in the music itself, which explores a mix between lo-fi and hi-fi, possessing an intimate bedroom recording-like quality but with production that sounds glowing and golden. Similarly, the sunny sheen found in the music-via a kind of psychedelic pop meets electronic soul-is one born from dichotomy.“I feel at home in the deep south of England,” he says. “I’m in the middle of nowhere with lots of green land, fresh air and head space. I feel like the sunshine in the South in the summer months
really reflects in my music. However, I tend to make music in the dark hours and winter months, so it’s almost like the music is my sunshine and happy place in these moments. ”The end result is also an album that exists in a dual world, one that at times has enough bounce and buoyancy to fill a dance floor-as on the disco funk strutting “Lead Me Astray”- and others feels perfectly suited to introspective headphone listening as on the breezy, woozy ambience of “Cala Llenya”.The latter track pays tribute to the Ibiza beach of the same name, whereas “Dancing with the Birds”- a delicate exploration of pastoral folk-is a nod to one of Britain’s most beloved treasures. “It’s based on a late night walk having just watched a David Attenborough documentary, featuring these beautiful birds that have a crazy mating dance. I love his documentaries and I was listening to a lot of Bert Jansch. The next night I had this vision of dancing birds come into my mind. ”Elsewhere Headroom touches upon, in Bright’s own words, 60’s sunshine doo-wop, mutant disco, and mystic mountain top vibes. It’s an album that explores a great deal yet even amidst its dualities it retains a sense of cohesion throughout. It’s a mixture that Bright feels pleased to have managed to juggle so seamlessly. “I think there is a good balance around experimentation on the record-a nice mix between fun and substance.”

Bluesman George “Mojo” Buford started blowing the harmonica in his teens, eventually linking up to tour with fellow Mississippian Muddy Waters. Adopting his nickname from ravenous crowds requesting Muddy’s “Got My Mojo Working,” Buford gained the attention of some gifted young rockers (including lead guitarist of The Trashmen!), who steered him into the studio for three smokin’ ‘69 sessions–the results of which we’re finally hearing for the first time! The songs here mostly came out of Buford’s live repertoire at the time, including (of course) “Got My Mojo Working” as well as “Love Without Jealousy,” a song Buford co-wrote that would appear on Waters’ 1973 album Mud In Your Ear. Several others in the sessions were Buford originals: the 12-bar nugget “Deep Sea Diver” and the funkier workouts “Lost Love” and “Stingin’ Bee Blues.” He also covered his pal Otis Spann’s “Blues Is a Botheration” and Sonny Boy Williamson II’s “Help Me,” co-written by Willie Dixon. In a roundabout, six-degrees-of-Minnesota-music way, it was the Trashmen connection that finally earned the rest of us the chance to hear these recordings. While scouring his vaults compiling the comprehensive four-CD Trashmen box set, Bird Call! (Sundazed) Mike Jann stumbled upon these reels. You could say it was ultimately him seeking “Surfin’ Birds” that led him instead to Mojo Workin’, and now we all get to enjoy it.

The Stroppies have now evolved into what some might call a “proper band”. 2019 saw the release of their debut LP Whoosh!, a studio-based affair that evolved The Stroppies sound, underpinned with a newly discovered melodic classicism. Look Alive!, their latest effort which was recorded only months after the bands return to Australia after their second European tour of 2019, represents a marriage of the two different styles of Stroppies recordings and rounds out an incredibly productive twelve months for the group. Look Alive! Is the sound of The Stroppies honing their craft under new and unfamiliar conditions. Written mainly on the road then finished and recorded at home with whatever was on hand with only three of the four members present, it is according to the band’s singer/guitarist Angus Lord, "an EP forged in circumstance. A sum total of fleeting vignettes on scraps of paper, voice memos and iPhone notepads all collated between soundchecks and long stretches in a tour van rolled pieced together over weekly jams " If Whoosh! glimmered and sparkled with tight production and succinct pop songwriting, Look Alive! is a somewhat darker shade, employing a more diffuse, impressionistic sonic palette and a more obvious penchant for experimentation. Tracked by the band and long time friend/ collaborator Alex Macfarlane (Twerps, The Stevens, Hobbies Galore) at home and then mixed and mastered direct off the tape at Phaedra studios in Coburg by John Lee, it’s also a somewhat collaborative project. The title track sees acoustic pianos duel with synthesizers over Pavement-esque guitar wig outs, whilst ‘The Aisles of the Supermarket’ employs tape loops to forge loose ambient foundations. Though these ideas may reflect the band’s noted “stream of consciousness creativity”, remarkably the songwriting remains as sharp as ever. Album opener ‘Burning Bright’ gallops forward with the propulsive energy of ‘77-era Talking Heads. Elsewhere, lead single ‘Holes In Everything’ presents the band at its pop best: Their penchant for push and pull of light and dark splashed against the backdrop of trepidation and humour makes The Stroppies records so endearing and open-ended. Though undeniably pop structure orientated, the bands propensity for re-inventing and re-appropriating their recording and writing process ensures that nothing starts to fossilize. Indeed, Look Alive! is that most intriguing of records precisely because it represents two ideas at the same time - the sound of a band in flux, but also the sound of a band becoming more sure footed as they walk their crooked line. 1.
