This Issue: Michael Schulman at Slumberland Records

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

I think that it’s been the same for our bands as for many others - while there was still strong interest in the music it just wasn’t possible to tour and have that more personal, direct connection with the fans. For small bands and small labels it almost feels *more* important to have that, since we can’t always count on extensive press or radio support.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

I’ve been a music fan for as long as I can remember and spent a lot of time during my pre-teen years exploring my parents’ pretty-decent record collection. When I hit my teens I got into punk then post-punk, DIY, indie labels etc and was WAY into record collecting. Early in my college years

I worked at my college radio station (WMUC, at the University of MD, College Park) and made weekly (sometimes daily!) trips to local record shops. This led to what I might consider my first industry job, working in a suburban MD record store called Vinyl Ink.

When and where did the label begin?

When I started at college (1983) there weren’t *that* many people who were into the kind of music that I was, and we all tended to find each other at the radio station, at gigs, at the local record shops. I had a particularly tight posse that I would hang out with, listen to records, go to shows, etc. We were into noise rock sort of stuff (Sonic Youth, Swans, Big Black, Head of David, The Birthday Party, etc) but also DIY/indie pop like Creation label, K, Flying Nun, Postcard and the like.

The Jesus & Mary Chain was a galvanizing influence because they kind of mashed all of that up, which was super exciting to us. After seeing the Mary Chain play in DC in November 1985 a few of us decided to make the jump from just listening to also making music. Most of us had no or very little experience, so we were making an awfully primitive racket. As time went on and our group of friends had coalesced into a few different groups (Whorl, Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine) and started playing shows, we wanted to document what we were doing, so one of us bought a 4-track cassette deck and we all started tinkering with making recordings.

With recordings in hand and being a bunch of vinyl-obsessed goofs, we thought it might be a giggle to make a single. Since what we were doing seemed too weird and primitive to take to other labels, and since some of us worked at stores and sort of knew how distribution worked, we figured we might as well do it ourselves. Slumberland’s first release was a 3 song compilation 7”, which came out in December 1989.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

A lot of the original SLR crew were into comics and at the time there were some reprints of an early 1900s Sunday comic called Little Nemo In Slumberland coming out. It’s an amazing strip, and the weird psychedelic nature of it appealed. Slumberland Records it was.

How has the label changed since it started?

It’s been over 30 years so there’s been a LOT of change - moving to the west coast, going through periods of varied levels of activity, rolling with it when certain records have taken off well beyond our expectations. In some ways the biggest change came early - the decision to go outside our group of friends and start putting records out by other people. That move transitioned the label from being a vanity project to being more of a *real* label, and I’m still reckoning with that decision 30 years later!

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. When we first started the label was a collective effort of that original group of friends that comprised the first batch of bands. We all pitched in to stuff records in sleeves, pack orders, etc. After a few years more and more of the work wound up in my hands – partially because I was willing to do it, and because the stock was at the house I lived in and also because some of the other folks were in a band that was becoming more popular and keeping them on the road touring. When I moved to California the label came with me, and since then it’s been a one-person show, spiced up by the occasional intern or record stuffing party with friends.

When we started the label we definitely focused on the DC-area bands that started the label and the small scene that grew up around/with them, like Lorelei, The Ropers, Lilys, etc.

After we moved to California we started working with Bay Area/Sacramento/north bay bands like Henry’s Dress, Rocketship, The Aislers Set and The Softies. In the last several years we’ve released a lot of records by Bay Area bands, like The Reds, Pinks & Purples, The Umbrellas, Kids On A Crime Spree, Artsick, Lunchbox and more. I’ve never thought of Slumberland as locals-only label but I do like working with bands that you can hang out with and go see play live a lot. It’s just fun that way!

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I reckon that most people would think of Slumberland as an indiepop label, and while we certainly (and unashamedly!) have put out a lot of indiepop records, I’d like to think we cover a lot more territory than that, though all under the general banner of indie guitar pop/rock.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

I don’t think the goals have really changed all that much. I just want to release records that I like that fit into this ongoing narrative that we’ve developed. I don’t have any illusions about growing the label; my goal is to help bands get their music heard and whatever success follows that is sort of incidental.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

I wouldn’t exactly call it wild, but we did do subway stations ads for Weekend’s Jinx ‘cause we got a great deal on them. I have no idea how effective they were but they sure looked cool!

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??

Just as we never stopped pressing vinyl, even in the dark days of the early and mid 00s, we also never stopped making CDs and will continue to do so as long as people want them. We have started making cassettes for some releases – it’s nice to have a format that we can economically make in small numbers and that doesn’t take a year to manufacture!

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

I think the typical SLR fan is an explorer, someone who does their own digging and doesn’t wait for the press to tell them what’s up. They’re fans of good songwriting and put more value on tunes than whether a band is cool or being talked about. And obviously they have exquisite taste!

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

That would have to be the advent and growth of digital music, from the early years of file sharing to the near-collapse of record retail to the brief bounce of digital sales and now to what might be the end-game of streaming. While I welcome the democratizing nature of digital music, its ubiquity does make it harder and harder to sell records, and I think in some ways trivializes the art itself, commodifying and devaluing it.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

I used to co-operate a side label that specialized in leftfield electronic/dance records, and if I started another side or sub-label it would probably also be in that area, and/or new jazz.

On Patrol, originally released in 2010, is a double album in two parts, and the fourth full length album from SUN ARAW. An album for heavy-steamin’ late nights in the city, inter-dimensional back alleys, ghost cabs; it creeps and tunes in on a much darker, sparser, and more classically minded channel than its predecessors: dark and deep steam-vent ruminations on Phil Cohran , lenticular objects, and fried Hot 92.3 R&B slow-jams. A cold bug makes a real “live wire.”

OVERVIEW

Kassa Overall is a Grammy-nominated musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer who melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and rap in unmapped directions. On his Warp Records debut, ANIMALS, Kassa pushes his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision further. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets, including Danny Brown, Wiki, Lil B, and Shabazz Palaces. Top-flight jazz improvisation weaves in and out of orchestral string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. The album’s diverse, all-star roster of collaborators includes several of his close friends, like vocalists Nick Hakim, Laura Mvula, Francis and the Lights, and jazz stars like Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.

“[Water From Your Eyes] holds your gaze long after the mystery fades, channeling a powerful sense of empathy to mesmerizing effect.” - Pitchfork

Life is horribly dark right now. And yet, it is not unfunny.

That’s the sentiment that animates Water From Your Eyes on their new album, and first for Matador, ‘Everyone’s Crushed.’ On the follow-up to the Brooklyn duo’s 2021 breakthrough, ‘Structure,’ Rachel Brown (they/them) and Nate Amos (he/ him) find silliness and fatalism dancing in a frantic lockstep, using heart palpitating rhythms and absurdist, deadpan lyrics to convey stories of personal and societal unease. Described by Brown as Water From Your Eyes’ most collaborative record ever – and, as such, a kind of reset for the pair, almost like a debut, despite technically being their sixth –it’s a swollen contusion of an album: experimental pop music that’s pretty and violent, raw and indelible.

Nite Bjuti

Nite Bjuti

Nite Bjuti (pronounced night beauty) is a US-based, Afro-Caribbean, woman-led improvised experimental trio of vocalist Candice Hoyes, GRAMMY-nominated sound chemist Val Jeanty and bassist Mimi Jones - who weave together multiple strands of storytelling using voice, bass, electro percussion, turntables, Haitian drums, dance and visual projections.

The trio was formed in 2018 after Hoyes performed an Afrofuturism concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center where she is a lecturer, inviting Jeanty to play and collaborate. This performance revealed a powerful chemistry that l ed to extended studio improvisations and an invitation to Mimi Jones - a fellow Berklee professor with Jeanty.

All 11 tracks on this album are entirely improvised. "The sound is completely authentic and we're actually making it on the spot," explains Jean ty. The results from this purely improvisatory approach, along with the musicians' individual skills and contemplative methodology is an inimitable soundworld realised in a record rooted by Jones' and Jeanty's basslines and rhythms, with Hoyes' cerebral vo cal lines skilfully cutting through.Nite Bjuti is a captivating jazz record, honouring the traditions of musical improvisation and which is deeply respectful to the subjects and narratives it takes inspiration from - an important new entry to the jazz canon.

David Preston

Purple / Black Vol.1

When David Preston started composing for the project that became his first solo LP, he opened up some fascinating new perspectives, in contrast to his acclaimed work with high-octane fusioneers Preston/ Glasgow/Lowe he found himself drawn to simple forms, textures and moods - 'not going full tilt all the time'

To realize his vision, he assembled a cast of extraordinary musical explorers. Building on his relationship with six -string bassist Kevin Glasgow as a foundation, he chose multi-genre drummer Seb Rochford, equally at home playing with the avante- jazz of Polar Bear as he is with pop sensation Adele, and rounded the team off with front-rank composer, arranger, pianist and organist Kit Downes. All players whose approach could simultaneously encompass both simplicity and deep complexity, and match the freedom to improvise with a respect for the concision and directness of the song.

David took them into the studio and the band instantly gelled, diving into a mammoth session that yielded enough material for two full albums. Volume 1Purple / Black is the first offering - a coherent suite of song-form tunes whose direct, uncluttered melodicism conceals hidden depths that reveal themselves anew at each listen.

Kira Linn

Illusion

German baritone saxophonist and composer Kira Linn presents Illusion, alongside her six-piece band - the Linntett, the album moves in genres ranging from pop to jazz and indie to electro, neosoul and R&B, played by three saxophones (Linn on baritone, Nino Wenger on alto and Christoper Kunz on tenor) as well as Rhodes (Lukas Großmann), electric bass (Lukas Keller) and drums (Johannes Koch).

Linn's technique and training are rooted in more traditional big band and modern jazz styles, but she has also been influenced by the likes of Billie Eilish, Arlo Parks and Laura Mvula, making for an album with an exciting mix of styles. For the first time, she sings and has written her own lyrics. "I started to write songs and also I wanted to use my voice," she explains. "It's so different from playing notes because of course, it's so much more direct." Anger and powerlessness, but also strength, diversity and freedom are core concepts that run through the record, "the songs are all inspired by emotions and topics that came up during the pandemic," Linn says. These concepts are also represented visually in the design with bright, bold colors and a bandleader who takes on a new form in every picture.

Illusions is an album demonstrating the startling creativity of Linn who so competently uses her work to speak about social themes on her own terms and in her own distinctive way - a refreshing new record from a refreshing new voice on the scene.

An expanded view of Tomek’s 1983 no wave punk funk celebration of the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument), recorded in the home of Stones producer Jimmy Miller, from the freshly baked original tapes!

Funk is a key element of Lamprecht’s musical makeup and the common denominator on “Contract,” “Prelude,” and the previously unreleased “Kill” and “Things Will Come and Pass Like Magic.” “I was paying attention to it and learning from it quite a bit,” he says. “Part of my drumming on the record was a reference to the early funk stuff. I was totally into it.”

Punk funk was one of the most vital sounds of the early ‘80s NYC underground, exemplified by bands like Liquid Liquid, ESG, Bush Tetras, Defunkt, and Model Citizens offshoot The Dance.

After a deceptively spacey intro that could have fallen out the back window of Pink Floyd’s tour bus, opening track “Reminder” lays down a minimalist groove somewhere between the urban grit of NYC No Wave and the post-punk abjection of Joy Division. Lamprecht’s lyrics set out a series of contradictions as the atmosphere grows increasingly disorienting and nightmarish, as if a French New Wave film were slowly morphing into a sci-fi B movie.

The full-length version of “Jingle,” heard on this package for the first time, was represented only by an 18-second excerpt on the original record. A gloriously goofy, sample-happy sonic carnival including a barking dog, shouting, coughing, car horns, crashes, whistles, and more, it sounds like the Marx Brothers set loose at an Art of Noise session.

Recorded at RPM Studio by The man who oversaw classics like Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main St. It was decked out with cutting-edge equipment, including the revolutionary Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument), one of the first samplers. It literally cost as much as a house at the time.

The original 1983 Tomek record contained only six tracks, two of them under a minute long. “I wanted it to be an album,” says Lamprecht, “but everything got compressed and it ended up being an EP.” Four decades later, the full fruits of those sessions are here at last. Lamprecht’s lifelong opposition to virtuosity may have kept him out of the conservatory, but it freed his mind to move in ways we’re only just now finding out about in full.

BLACK COUNTRY, NEW ROAD

LIVE AT BUSH HALL

Release Date: May 26th, 2023

Following the release of the band’s critically acclaimed “Live at Bush Hall” film, Black Country, New Road have announced a new live album featuring the set from their three sold out back-to-back shows at Bush Hall in December 2022. “Live at Bush Hall” is available on black LP via Ninja Tune.

In early 2022, Black Country, New Road released their UK #3 and Billboard #9 (Vinyl Albums) album “Ants From Up There” (their second Top 5 UK album debut in 12 months, following their A2IM Libera Award nominated “For the first time”), which was lauded by fans and critics alike, spending 6 weeks in the Top 10 of the NACC Top 200, gaining numerous 5* reviews and appearing on end of year lists across the globe, including being voted #1 by fans on r/indieheads, Rate Your Music and #3 by Pitchfork readers.

Fresh from the success of “Ants From Up There” and with a full touring schedule ahead of them in 2023, the now six-piece band decided to write an entire new set of material to perform. They played to swelling crowds at festivals, including triumphant performances at Primavera, Green Man and Fuji Rock, entering a new musical phase as they navigated and developed songs that were just weeks old. They also toured the US with black midi and headlined two shows at Bowery Ballroom in New York, the first of which sold out in under 5 minutes. Their US tour was covered Pitchfork, Stereogum, Paste, and more.

The band garnered widespread support for this new material across the board with Rolling Stone UK describing their Green Man set as "unmissable", and the Guardian going on to say that they were "greeted by something close to rapture." These performances have also attracted a profile from the New York Times, multiple glowing live reviews, and a nomination for Best Live Performer at the AIM Independent Music Awards last year.

Produced by Ian Kearey - Shirley Collins’ musical director - the arrangements were shared between Collins, Kearey, Pip Barnes, as well as Dave Arthur and Pete Cooper, players from The Lodestar Band.

All of the songs on Archangel Hill were recorded last year except for “Hand And Heart”, which was taken from a live performance at the Sydney Opera House in 1980 and features an arrangement by Shirley’s beloved and talented sister Dolly Collins.

Since the release of Collins’ last album (Heart’s Ease, 2020), her first book America Over The Water has been republished.

The bottleneck guitarist was 67 years old when these tracks were recorded and his passion and conviction seem to have strengthened with the years. The original recording of Swervedriver’s debut 4 song EP, finally available for retail! Released by the band last year and only available directly to their fans via Bandcamp, the first pressing of Petroleum Spirit Daze sold out in a flash. We convinced the band that a repressing was in order, and this time it comes on a lovely gold vinyl. To give you a little backstory on this recording, let’s go to Adam Franklin

“It was an open secret in Oxford that local young whippersnappers Ride had been signed to Creation Records but that label was going to wait until January of 1990 to release their debut record. We decided to get our skates on and get a record deal and the clock was already counting down”

Heading into the studio in April of 1990, Swervedriver recorded their debut EP, the 4 songs that would become the “Son of Mustang Ford” EP, but Alan Magee wanted the band to re-record it in London so off they went. This original recording was then filed away for 30 years, only to be dug up by the band and have them discover that in fact this original recording was the perfect debut, the sound of a band just moments away from being discovered by the world.

GOAT - WORLD MUSIC

When the mysterious masked collective calling themselves Goat first emerged in 2012, armed with an incendiary debut album ‘World Music’ and a backstory for the ages – the band’s anonymous members hailing from the remote village of Korpilombo in northern Sweden, where inhabitants had for centuries been devoted to a form of voodoo introduced by a travelling witch doctor – there was, and there still isn’t, anyone else on earth quite like them.

Their mythology enticing, their music full of sinuous grooves and manic explosions of fuzz, Goat were outliers from the very beginning. ‘World Music’, received an avalanche of acclaim with critics, psych heads, outernational crate diggers etc, all left enraptured by its thunderous intensity, conjured from a singular mix of sounds from across the globe.

Now, exactly a decade later, Rocket Recordings and the band have decided to dust-off the original recordings of ‘World Music’ and pass them over to the capable hands of the team at the legendary Abbey Road Studios to remaster the tracks and make them shine like they have never before. The results are better than we could have hoped. New details within the tracks have been revealed and - most importantly - the fuzz is even more explosive than before. You hear every crackle of electricity as it flows through the pedals.

‘World Music’s famous die-cut sleeve has been updated too, the colours of the eye-popping pattern have been reversed from the original, making this package even more desirable.

The album is brimming with tracks now seen as ‘classic’ Goat live favourites. Tracks that have been wowing audiences all over the world; the afrobeat stomp of ‘Disco Fever’, the fuzz abuse of ‘Goathead’, the post-punk groove of ‘Let it Bleed’, the sing-along repetitive pop of ‘Run to your Mama’... From the first note to the last, ‘World Music’ oozes with a sonic confidence rarely seen on a debut album.

Over the last 10 years many bands have tried to recreate the addictive ingredients which make up Goat’s cosmic soup, but none have ever come close to getting the recipe right. What Goat have is unique. They have an unsurpassed level of authenticity and honesty that makes them stand head and shoulders above all their imitators. They’ve managed to create a sound unrestrained by genre boundaries. There literally is still no other band on earth that sounds quite like them.

About “Two Beasts”:

“For the uninitiated, “Two Beasts” is a comprehensive document of where SUMAC was in the late fall of 2020. The song hits on all the elements that make the band unique. Bowel-loosening low end? Check. Indecipherable time signature patterns? Yup. Long, empty pauses and repetitive structures? Yessir. Mammoth grooves? You betcha. “Two Beasts” is experimental metal at its finest, 18 minutes of left turns with enough rewarding pay-offs to make it worth a close listen. The band’s newfound love of negative space and jazz-inspired arrangements counterintuitively add an element of danger to the music. If big riffage is heavy music’s best friend and quiet moments its kryptonite, then SUMAC seem to operate under the adage keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

One of SUMAC’s strengths, once again evident on “Two Beasts,” is their commitment to fidelity. SUMAC recordings sound good. It’s hard to imagine music this brutal being so pleasurable to listen to, and it’s a major differentiator between them and their peers. Once again recorded at The Unknown, an old, converted church in the sleepy Washington town of Anacortes, “Two Beasts” sounds live and meticulously produced at the same time. This is most likely a testament to the exquisite ability of the players and recording engineers involved; these are music lifers at the top of their game. Listening to “Two Beasts,” SUMAC is a band that can seemingly do anything.” - post-trash.com

About SUMAC:

SUMAC was formed in 2014 by the core trio of Aaron Turner (also of Old Man Gloom, ISIS, etc), Nick Yacyshyn (also of Baptists, Erosion, etc), and Brian Cook ( Botch, Russian Circles, etc). “The Deal” their debut album, was recorded in 2014 and released in 2015. SUMAC has subsequently released 3 more studio albums via Thrill Jockey Records, a 7” EP via Sub Pop, and 3 collaborative albums with Japanese avant icon Keiji Haino, also via Thrill Jockey. Though the members have continued activities with their other bands, SUMAC functions as a fully operational unit, touring and recording extensively in the 8 years since their inception. They are currently at work on a new album due for release in late 2023. SUMAC routinely invests in the recursive exercises of chaos and control.

THE FUCKING CHAMPS III

Street Date: May 26, 2023

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE/UK, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA/NZ; SEND III EVERYWHERE ELSE WITH TOTAL CONFIDENCE

In May of 1996, with a handful of releases under their belts, the kings of the insanity sound, then known simply as: The Champs, began recording their magnum octopus, III . This time their sights were set beyond the still diminutive cassette format and trained squarely on a gatefold double album the perfect medium for Total Music. Over the next year, in between touring up and down the west coast, the band molded the Kubrickian monolith known as III

In May of 1997, after lugging a console, tape machines, speakers and a smattering of outboard gear up three flights of stairs, the band mixed the album in the bedroom of a third floor apartment, directly overlooking the 280 freeway. The noise floor was such that all windows remained closed for the duration of the process.

Over the next six weeks they played wherever people thirsted for something compelling and different, something to rock out with their Bach out, in a word, well two words, Total Music . While on the road, the band also searched for a suitable record label willing to make the financial commitment a gatefold double album requires a tall order for a band virtually unknown outside of the west coast and the borough of Manhattan. Ultimately, the eclectic San Francisco label, Frenetic, took the plunge and generously emptied their modest

coffers to fund the manufacture of III , which was released under the legally distinct band name: C4AM95. In print, the name was easily decoded by use of the ubiquitous “devil horns” or “maloik”, with the index finger covering the awkward section of the 4 and the underrated pinkie finger covering the southern portion of the 9. This deliberate obfuscation shielded the band from increasingly ominous communications emanating from Nashville concerning the similarity in name to a certain band from the 1950’s.

After the release of III , The Champs continued to tour the US, embarking on (and completing) six tours before the turn of the millennium. It was at this point the powers that be at Drag City International realized they could sit on the sidelines no longer and committed to release the band’s aptly titled follow-up, IV (on which I was honored to guest, playing bass on the only Champs song ever to feature that instrument). However, one obstacle stood in the band’s way to global dissemination of Total Music : the seemingly benign moniker they had saddled themselves with so many years earlier. After much discussion and consultation with The Oracle, it was determined that adding the supplemental “Fucking” to The Champs name would clear up any confusion regarding another band of the same name from the

The band subsequently released four albums with Drag City, an EP with Thrill Jockey, and a collection of greatest hits on Matador. They contributed music to moving pictures (both television and film) and wrote music for video games, such as The Sims . They collaborated with French sensations Justice They toured the US, Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and spread the totality of Total Musi c far and wide. Name dropped by luminaries such as Chloë Sevigny, they were often cited as inspiration by sources from Metallica to The Strokes to that guy from Guided by Voices The Fucking Champs left an indelible mark on the musical consciousness of the second to last and final millennia.

For this special 26th anniversary edition of III , the album was remastered by the band from the original master tapes, lacquers expertly cut by John Golden and artwork restored by forensic experts in Drag City’s employ. Long sought after on eBay, Discogs and the like, this will be the first time that this master stroke of musicality will be made widely available.

I hope you enjoy this timeless classic as much I have these past 25 years.

Info:

Have You

Seen My Prefrontal

Cortex?, the debut album from A Great Big Pile of Leaves, is a raw assemblage of the band’s signature style of punk-infused summer pop Wistful guitar noodles expressively around Pete Weiland’s melismatic singing style, backed with a tactful rhythm section that dials up a calculated intensity at just the right moments

Brooklyn-bred A Great Big Pile of Leaves deals in 90’s tinged indie-rock that is brainy yet accessible Founded by Pete Weiland and Tyler Soucy in 2007, the band expanded to include Tucker Yaro, writing and recording as a trio since the release of their self-produced and self-released debut album Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex? in 2010 - which was largely distributed via free download on the band’s website

GAYE ADEGBALOLA SATISFIED – An Anthology

Gaye Adegbalola is widely known as a founding member of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women (1984 - 2009) who recorded exclusively for Alligator Records. However, she has been a successful solo artist for decades. SATISFIED, her anthology, includes selections from nine of her solo projects. Songs range from classic blues of the 1920’s to biting, humorous present day commentary. Two songs come from her Parents’ Choice Gold Award winning children’s CD to several from blues award winning efforts. On this anthology, her songwriting is as sharp as ever and is front and center with 15 originals of the 20 selections.

STREET DATE: 5/26/23

TRACKS

1. Big Ovaries, Baby

Gaye continues the tradition of classic blues women who have chronicled topics about social conditions as well as affairs of the heart. Like them, she has been described as one of those fiercely independent “wild women” — unashamed to lay her soul bare, unafraid to give advice. Like many of them, she is a comedienne, finding humor in the pain of day to day living.

Gaye says that “SATISFIED” is a composite of her life’s work and is dedicated to those classic blues women, like Ma Rainey, who birthed her!

Bell Orchestre is a collaborative instrumental, Montreal based group who originally formed back in 1999. The first music they created was predominately live scores for contemporary dance performances and theatrical puppet shows. The fusion of Bell Orchestre's wildly divergent musical backgrounds and the energy created from this connection is the catalyst to the group's signature avantgarde sound

Besides being pressed on vinyl for the very first time, the record features brand-new cover artwork by Munich-based graphic designer Bernd Kuchenbeiser.

The album includes the spellbinding reinterpretation of Water / Light / Shifts courtesy of fellow Canadian electronic producer Tim Hecker.

“Listening to this, 14 years later and having totally forgotten making this one afternoon, was a reminder that things do change. I can hear the old markers of granular synthesis, Nord Modular synth and fake mellotron samples. These are tools left on a past workbench. It has the rough style of probably 5 layers of improvisation stacked against each other, in a way that feels both like home and yet also some distant foreign self.” Tim Hecker

In addition to Tim Hecker's lead single Water / Light / Shifts, The album also features contributions from the late Japanese prodigious composer Susuma Yokota, dub legend Mad Professor, Canadian DJ and producer Kid Koala, as well as long-time friend and collaborator Colin Stetson amongst others.

“I have some incredible memories from my brief stint as occasionally joining these lovely friends on stages around the world, and I am excited to see this music flitting about once again ” – Colin Stetson.

Sam Cook-Parrott of Radiator Hospital would probably have been a safe bet to use the early months of the pandemic in 2020 to turn out a ton of self-recorded releases. Since the band began, the prolific songwriter, guitarist and frontman of Radiator Hospital has been always alternated between bedroom recordings and full band LPs.

But Cook-Parrott took 2020 as a cosmic sign to take time away and get in touch with what it is exactly he’d always loved about making music. He threw himself at his growing interest in various visual art processes over this time reinvigorated my interest in making songs the way he always had; fast and from scratch. “Making the songs felt like making a painting or photograph: Controlling certain things and surrendering control of other things until something new is there,” Cook-Parrott said when asked about the record.

The songs on Can’t Make Any Promises were mostly in 2022 and were recorded by longtime collaborator, Kyle Gilbride of Swearin’. Some songs feature just Cook-Parrott alone while others feature Radiator Hospital’s full band line up of Cynthia Schemmer, Jeff Bolt and Jon Rybicki, marking a return to the structure of their early LP’s, Something Wild and Torch Song.

Trinidad & Tobago

OVERVIEW:

Soundway presents a double-sider of raw, West Indian Funk from 1977. Led by King Wellington’s ‘Shango’, the stand-out cut harvested from his Sooner Or Later LP finally gets the 45 treatment it deserves. Inspired by the Shango ritual with its roots in Yoruba culture, traces of Calypso music are driven by hypnotic bass and Wellington’s signature vocal, making up a musical blend only found in the Caribbean.

Hidden on the B-side, ‘Mystery Music’ fronted by Canadian musician Tony Springer, embarks on a dreamy, dynamic and even a touch psychedelic trip. Steel pans coupled with floating horns, electronic keyboard effects, crisp drums and subtle guitar licks cook up a soundscape baked by the Trinidad sun. While original copies climb their way to impossible-to-find status, enthusiasts will be excited to hear this sought after piece of music is available on the 45 format again.

The Stomachmouths

The Stomachmouths were one of the earliest pure garage bands in the European garage revival of the 1980s. Along with local Swedish colleagues the Crimson Shadows they strove for authenticity in replicating the sound and the look of the original ’60s inspirators, primarily from the US. The band were undoubtedly kings of the scene, received immediate international attention with their self-released debut 45 and toured extensively in Europe leaving memories of tremendous shows. Band leader Stefan Kéry later went on to form the successful independent Xotic Mind/Subliminal Sounds record label.

This best-of compilation gathers The Stomachmouths legacy of timeless teen rock’n’roll recordings.

Fading Yellow vol 20

With this volume we celebrate 20 years since Fading Yellow volume 1 cd. Fading Yellow created a genre all of its own and praised by many including Bob Stanley.

It’s twenty years since I walked into a record shop in Stockholm and heard Disraeli’s mournful, gently thunderous What Will The New Day Bring. I asked the owner what he was playing and he told me it was Fading Yellow volume 2. He played snatches of volume one. I bought both on the spot. Here was a new subset of music which I had always loved, without thinking of it as a subset. Fading Yellow magically bound the softer end of psych with singer-songwriters and beat groups; what they had in common - aside from woodwinds, harpichords and cellos - was minor chords. The heart of Fading Yellow is rarely sad but always melancholy. Twenty volumes in and it still sounds magical.

The usual high quality 45’s musically, this time from the USA and, as always, all the tracks doing their first entrance on any compilation. Groups including Magic Ring, Second Helping, The Mother Love, Luv Birds, The News etc

All late 60’s popsike and other delights . Don’t miss out on this wonderful volume.

FORMAL GROWTH IN THE DESERT

OVERVIEW

Since their 2012 debut, Protomartyr have mastered the art of evoking place: the grinding Midwest humility of their hometown, as well as the x-rayed elucidation of America that comes with their vantage. The group’s sixth album was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, TX with producer Jake Aron. “The desert is more of a metaphor or symbol,” singer Joe Casey says, “of emotional deserts, or a place or time that seems to lack life.” The “growth” came from a period of colossal transition for Casey, including the death of his mother. But life does go on, and Casey describes the great theme of Formal Growth In The Desert as an embrace and acknowledgment of that fact: a 12-song testament to “getting on with life,” even when it feels impossibly hard.

What Matters Most Moments (feat. Tall Heights)

“More than anything, I wanted to make an album that was generous, that was useful,” says Ben Folds. “I want you to finish this record with something you didn’t have when you started.”

Indeed, Folds’ masterful new collection, What Matters Most, isn’t so much a statement as it is an offering, an open hand reaching out to all those wounded and bewildered by a world that seems to make less and less sense every day. Recorded in East Nashville with co-producer Joe Pisapia, the album marks Folds’ first new studio release in eight years, and it’s a bold, timely, cinematic work, one that examines the tragic and the absurd in equal measure as it reckons with hope and despair, gratitude and loss, identity and perspective. The songs are bittersweet here, hilarious at times, but often laced with a quiet sense of longing and dread: a text message goes unanswered; an old classmate descends into the dark depths of internet conspiracies; a relationship unravels in the middle of a lake. And yet, taken as a whole, the result is an undeniably joyful record that refuses to succumb to the weight of the world around it, an ecstatic reminder of all the beauty and promise hiding in plain sight for anyone willing (and present enough) to recognize their moments as they arrive.

OVERVIEW

WITCH was the first band in Zambia to release a commercial album — 1973’s Introduction. Blending the rock and roll sounds of UK rock bands like The Rolling Stones, Cream, and The Beatles together with more traditional African rhythms, WITCH pioneered a new genre dubbed Zamrock, and during their brief yet prolific existence, WITCH (an acronym for We Intend To Cause Havoc) released 7 albums and were the most revered band in the country.

Zango is the band’s 8th studio album and the first release on Desert Daze Sound — a new Partisan imprint A&Red by the founder of the Desert Daze festival, Phil Pirrone. The album was recorded at the same studio where the original band’s sensational 1975 album Lazy Bones had been made some 46 years prior: DB Studios. On Zango, Emmanuel “Jagari” Chanda is joined by Patrick Mwondela on keys, Nico Mauskoviç on drums and percussion, Stefan Lilov on guitar, JJ Whitefield on guitar, and Jacco Gardner on bass, who is also credited with producing the album alongside WITCH. The album features collaborations with Keith Kabwe (Amanaz), Theresa Ng’ambi, Hanna Tembo, and Sampa The Great.

“‘Zango’ means ‘meeting place’,” Jagari explains. “Every village [in Zambia] will have this central place, where villagers meet to prepare for work, where youngsters go to learn, where the young ones learn from the elder folks, and where the visitors come and converge. It’s an institution, a place where people are welcomed, and where people come for research. It speaks to our band and its various backgrounds and countries. We are at our own meeting point with our music.”

RUEN BROTHERS TEN PACES

LP / CD STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023

Siblings Henry and Rupert Stansall, known as Ruen Brothers, are saddling up from their home of Scunthorpe, England to ride into unmarked territory. Inspired by their love of noir and neo-western films, their cinematic new album Ten Paces exhibits the rich, sonic versatility of the brothers, as every instrument heard on the album is performed by Henry and Rupert. The anthemic build of “The Fear” to the lonesome balladeering of “Bullet Blues” showcases these two outlaws at their creative peak.

❝ There’s nobody else like these guys making classic, timeless, unique music at this level.” - Rick

BACK IN THE BINS, NOW ON BABY DOLL PINK VINYL!

Unquestionably one of the most iconic rock guitarists of all time, Link Wray rumbled out of the gates with a string of instrumental hits starting in the late ‘50s. From raucous rock ‘n’ roll to americana and gospel, Wray’s versatility provides listeners with a look into that era’s sound.

This album presents another side of Link, this time pairing his blistering fretwork with vocal tunes perfectly suited for the teen hops that Link and company tirelessly played for years. Wray’s innovative stylings and melodies proved to influence fledgling guitarists like Bob Dylan, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, and Jimmy Page. Viewed as a rebel and one of the earliest punks, Wray’s music was spellbinding and continues to be regarded as some of the best rockabilly ever created.

Originally released in an extremely limited number of copies in ‘64, this reissue of one of his rarest LPs is now back in print!

DISCO HEAT—THE FANTASY YEARS 1977-1981

DISCO HEAT—THE FANTASY YEARS 1977-1981

(2-CD SET)

STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023

When the self-described “disco queen” known as Sylvester stepped on a New York stage opening for Chaka Khan, the local press was entranced. One newspaper approvingly noted that he made “David Bowie look like Lawrence Welk.” Nothing was too outrageous for Sylvester. But at his core, he was serious about music and about breaking down the walls of identity. In appearance and demeanor, the unapologetically gay San Francisco star challenged the gender binary long before such discussions were in the mainstream, going far beyond androgyny to create a striking persona all his own. Now, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records celebrate the late trailblazer with the release of the first comprehensive anthology of his seminal recordings for Fantasy Records. Disco Heat: The Fantasy Years 1977-1981 features 25 tracks on two CDs drawn from all six of his albums for the label, as well as the rare 12-inch Disco Versions that kept the dancefloors burning. In addition to versions of every hit Sylvester scored for Fantasy featuring crossover smashes like “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” and “Dance (Disco Heat),” the collection offers an array of remarkable covers including his moving live version of Patti LaBelle’s “You Are My Friend,” a smoldering medley of Barry Manilow’s “Could It Be Magic” and Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” Leiber and Stoller’s dramatic “I (Who Have Nothing),” Ashford and Simpson’s “Over and Over,” the Peggy Lee standard “Fever,” and Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “I Took My Strength from You.”

Featuring the vocals of Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash, later known as The Weather Girls, Disco Heat traces Sylvester’s Fantasy career with an emphasis on the bold dance music he made, underscoring the significance of black and gay artists to the creation of disco itself. Joe Marchese of The Second Disc provides detailed new liner notes placing Sylvester’s music into the context of the era, while the audio has been newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. Disco Heat, released in time for Pride Month 2023, is a striking tribute to the enduring and ahead-of-his-time diva. “Sometimes folks make us feel strange,” Sylvester told a New York audience in 1978, “but we’re not strange. And those folks – they’ll just have to catch up.” The world has finally caught up with The Fabulous Sylvester.

POOL-PAH: THE FLASHER

(50TH ANNIVERSARY BLACK WITH WHITE SWIRL “NIGHT SKY” VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023

1973: the sexual revolution was on, streaking was taking college campuses by storm, and Deep Throat was edging pornography ever closer to the mainstream. Against this backdrop, a talented New York band with the unlikely moniker of Pool-Pah teamed up with up-and-coming singer-songwriter, musician, and arranger Rupert Holmes to write and record an unforgettably far-out soundtrack blending rock, psychedelia, jazz, prog, pop, and electronica. It had to be heard to be believed…and far too few heard it. The soundtrack was to an X-rated film initially called Forbidden Under Censorship of the King (Get it? Think acronym) which was quickly retitled The Flasher. The movie even inspired a first-of-its-kind theatrical concert at New York’s Beacon Theatre, but when the brass at Paramount Pictures affiliate Greene Bottle Records got wind of the fact that Pool-Pah’s debut album was, in fact, the soundtrack to a porno, promotion stopped and the album disappeared. Rupert Holmes, of course, went on to score the final No. 1 hit of the 1970s and one of the first of the 1980s with his timeless “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” and forge careers as a best-selling mystery novelist and Tony Award-winning playwright and songwriter. Over time, the cult reputation of Pool-Pah’s The Flasher grew. Grammy winner Beck famously featured The Flasher in a 2001 Vanity Fair feature (“A Superfly version of electronic music for plants”) while the Holmes-penned groove “Sour Soul” became a favorite sample of hip-hop artists including Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and Big Sean on “O.T.T.R.” in 2011. Now, in time for its 50th anniversary, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to expose The Flasher in its first-ever reissue in any format. This incredible soundtrack–recalling The Beatles and The Bee Gees one minute, and Shaft and Superfly the next–returns to black with white swirl “night sky” vinyl as sourced from the pristine original tapes housed in the Universal vault. The LP features a four-page insert with rare photos and brand-new liner notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese drawing on interviews with Pool-Pah–lead singer Lenie Colacino, bassist/ trumpeter Bruce Handelman, guitarist/saxophonist Seth Handelman, guitarist Billye Arrington–and Rupert Holmes. If you like spacey synths, heavy guitars, funky rhythms, and just-plaingreat songs and vocals (piña coladas don’t hurt, either!), come with us and escape. GReAT EX PECTATIONS: The Album

(Limited 2-LP Emerald Green Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023

Alfonso Cuarón’s 1998 film changed a few things from the original Charles Dickens novel: Abel Magwitch became Arthur Lustig, Miss Havisham became Nora Dinsmoor, poor old Pip became Finn…and most importantly for our purposes, early 19th century London became 1990s New York! And so did the soundtrack— featuring tunes by Chris Cornell (the rare “Sunshower”), Pulp, Scott Weiland, Iggy Pop, and The Verve Pipe, its finger was firmly on the pulse of the late 20th century music scene, with a few welcome curveballs (Cesaria Evora, Grateful Dead?) to boot. Collectors will also note that Tori Amos wrote “Siren” for the movie, and that “Today” by Poe—which, like several other songs in the score, did not appear in the film—makes its only appearance here. Great Expectations: The Album was originally released only on CD, so vinyl soundtrack collectors have been lobbying for years to see it out on wax, and we are obliging with a 2-LP set inside a gorgeous gatefold jacket, pressed in emerald green vinyl to match Gwyneth Paltrow’s ravishing dress from the film. Limited to 2000 copies!

OWSLEY: OWSLEY

(LIMITED TAN VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: JUNE 2, 2023

You probably heard Alabama-born multiinstrumentalist Will Owsley before you heard of him; he was a mainstay in the bands of Amy Grant and Shania Twain during the mid-‘90s. He then pulled a Tom Scholz of Boston-style maneuver and recorded his own album, which he shopped to the major labels as a take-it-or-leave-it deal. The Giant label bit, as well they should have; Owsley is one of the better power pop albums of the ‘90s and certainly one of the best power pop debuts ever to come down the pike (that this self-recorded album got a Grammy nom for best engineered album is further testimony as to Owsley’s many talents). You’ll hear a little Cars, a little Todd Rundgren, and a healthy helping of Owsley’s former bandmate Ben Folds, but the crunch of Owsley’s guitars makes sure the “power” gets as much play as the “pop.”

Highlights include “Oh No the Radio,” “Coming Up Roses,” and “Good Old Days,” but really this is a remarkably consistent album, full of hooks and some sonic surprises (cello! organ!). Owsley makes its LP debut in a tan vinyl edition limited to 1000 copies, complete with a full-color inner sleeve. You’ll be playing some of these songs on repeat in your head after a couple of listens.

Ill Biskits was a one-and-done, German-born, Virginia-based duo composed of Deeda and Kleph Dollaz (R.I.P.) whose undeniable abilities on the mic and introspective, deep rhymes were mixed into hypnotic beats courtesy of D.I.T.C. producer superstars Buckwild and Lord Finesse. This album captures hip hop really coming of age as an art form; Chronicle of Two Losers has lyrical and sonic layers that unfold with repeated spins. Highly, highly recommended…so grab our coke bottle clear vinyl pressing while you can. It’s limited to 1000 copies, and includes an inner sleeve displaying the original CD booklet’s dreamy artwork.

It’s fair to say that what Ravi Shankar did for the sitar, Hamza El Din did for the oud (the short-necked Arabian lute): bringing a little-known instrument to the attention of the West and popularizing it. Indeed, he ended up playing oud with everybody from the Grateful Dead to the Kronos Quartet to his one-time roommate Sandy Bull. But El Din’s gifts went beyond that of an oud virtuoso; he was also an accomplished singer and composer, and you will hear all of those talents on full display on this seminal album, released on Vanguard in 1965 soon after his star-making appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival that attracted the attention of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Meditative, mesmerizing, and haunting, Al Oud features nine original compositions based on Nubian folk traditions; at first it’s the exotic sound of the oud that draws you in, but it’s the rhythmic pulse of the music and the expressive quality of El Din’s voice that keeps you riveted. Our first-ever American LP reissue of this classic record comes in a clear vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies, complete with original artwork featuring liner notes by Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, at the time Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations. A richly rewarding listen.

NEW YORK TIMES

“Everything has to be said.” This is the conviction guiding Indigo De Souza’s sophomore album, Any Shape You Take . This dynamic record successfully creates a container for the full spectrum—pushing through and against every emotion: “I wanted this album to give a feeling of shifting with and embracing change. These songs came from a turbulent time when I was coming to self-love through many existential crises and shifts in perspective.”

Faithful to its name, Any Shape You Take changes form to match the tenor of each story it tells. “The album title is a nod to the many shapes I take musically. I don’t feel that I fully embody any particular genre—all of the music just comes from the universe that is my ever-shifting brain/heart/world,” says Indigo. This sonic range is uni ed by Indigo’s strikingly confessional and e ortless approach to songwriting, a signature rst introduced in her debut, self-released LP, I Love My Mom . Written in quick succession, Indigo sees these two records as companion pieces, both distinct but in communion with each other: “Many of the songs on these two records came from the same season in my life and a certain version of myself which I feel much further from now.”

Throughout Any Shape You Take , Indigo re ects on her relationships as she reckons with a deeper need to rede ne how to fully inhabit spaces of love and connection.“It feels so important for me to see people through change. To accept people for the many shapes they take, whether those shapes t into your life or not. This album is a re ection of that. I have undergone so much change in my life and I am so deeply grateful to the people who have seen me through it without judgment and without attachment to skins I’m shifting out of.”

Growing up in a conservative small town in the mountains of North Carolina, Indigo started playing guitar when she was nine years old. “Music was a natural occurrence in my life. My dad is a bossa nova guitarist and singer from Brazil and so I think I just had it in my blood from birth.” It wasn’t until moving to Asheville, NC that Indigo began to move into her current sound, developing a writing practice that feeds from the currents that surround her: “Sometimes it feels like I am soaking up the energies of people around me and making art from a space that is more a collective body than just my own.”

At the forefront of all De Souza’s projects is her magnetism—her unique quality of spirit that is both buoyant and wise. While her backing band has undergone shifts between releases, her sound has stayed tethered to her vision. Any Shape You Take is the rst full-length album that Indigo produced herself. Teaming up with executive producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, The War on Drugs) and engineers/producers Alex Farrar and Adam McDaniel, Indigo recorded the album at Betty’s, Sylvan Esso’s studio in Chapel Hill, NC and nished it with additional production and mixing at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville. Moving past the limitations of a home studio, Indigo could nally embody the full reach of her sound: “It felt really exciting to lean into my pop tendencies more than I have in the past and to trust my intuition to take the songs where I felt they should go. I had the tools to do it and collaborators who were willing to go there with me.”

“I feel very much like a shape-shifter with my music, I’m always trying to embody a balance between the existential weight and the over owing sense of love I feel in the world.” It is exactly this balance that Indigo strikes in her Saddle Creek debut, Any Shape You Take . A listening experience that gives back, as you shed and shape-shift along with her.

Sam Blasucci Off My Stars

Also covered on Off My Stars is a raw take on Jimmy Fontana’s timeless ballad “Il Mondo,” sung in its original Italian by Blasucci, who belts it in a performance that ends with him giving it all he has, his voice cracking as he reaches the song’s epic finale. “Il Mondo” is a song that Blasucci particularly wanted to do as a means to get more in touch with his Italian roots—and this wouldn’t be the only way he’d tap into family on the album.

On “Proud of You Dad,” Blasucci dug into his archives for a song that’s he had for some time, originally having written and recorded it just for his father, David Blasucci, a musician who was at one time a touring member in the band Toto, and who has performed and acted in Christopher Guest movies like A Mighty Wind. “If I ever told you this while we were in the same room / I know you would cover your ears and run,” Sam sings over a rustic, campfire acoustic progression. As Sam explains, David was a crucial influence on his taste: “A lot of the underlying styles that influenced the rest of the songs on the record definitely come from what he introduced me to,” Sam says.

But Sam is his own man now, writing the new chapters of his own life with an aw-shucks tone that belies his prolific workload. Even through the pandemic—and even with the ongoing backlogs at pressing plants—Blasucci has still managed to put out beloved Mapache records in each of the last three years, and he and the band have no plans to slow down anytime soon. “I’m definitely the type of artist that is constantly creating,” Sam says, matter of fact. “And I can’t seem to really stop.”.

CD Box Lot: 30

Sam Blasucci is best known as one half of Mapache, a Southern California roots-rock duo just as instantly recognizable for their elegant, intertwined guitar parts as they are for their devoted, Nudie-Suit wearing fanbase. But when Blasucci was writing the songs that would become his debut solo record, Off My Stars, he found himself less focused on the guitar and more gravitated toward a different instrument: piano.

The mother of Clay Finch, his Mapache bandmate, was getting rid of one, and so Blasucci took the piano, carefully transporting it to his home in Ojai, California, with the help of a few strong friends, including Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks (and a Mapache collaborator). “Farmer Dave wasn’t even wearing shoes,” Blasucci remembers, laughing. Once the piano was safely in there, he became deeply attached, playing on it multiple hours a day: “It’s changed the way I think about music, having all the keys laid out in front of me,” he explains. “Having that sort of changed everything.”

Also inspired by his recent time riding out the pandemic in New Orleans, where the clubs may have closed but the music never stopped, Blasucci used that piano to start writing one of the most inspired batches of songs of his career thus far. New gems like “Turn Yourself Around” and “Sha La La” were developing with a Southern swing and classic songbook sparkle, and when assessing the growing stack of music he was working on, Blasucci realized that there was something about these tunes that wasn’t quite suited for a Mapache record.

Infused with an honest, personal perspective about settling into adult life—about developing as a person and a partner and a family member—these songs were straight from the heart, a clear window, recently Windexed, into the life of one of the most talented members of the L.A.-area underground rock scene. Using just as much inspiration from the music of Ronnie Wood and Sade as the films of Ingmar Bergman and the writing of Brian Doyle, Blasucci started to see a vision of songs that are all “fully autobiographical.”

Blasucci reached out to songwriter and producer Johnny Payne, and the two decamped to Dan Horne’s Lone Palm Studio, the home/studio where Mapache has in the past both recorded and abided in. Blasucci’s direction to Payne—acting as producer and as multi-instrumentalist, performing on everything from shaker to “guitar pancake”—was simple: no pretense, no affect, no Mr. Cool. This approach is most evident through covers on the record—like a stripped-down, achingly beautiful version of Dido’s ubiquitous “Thank You,” or a New Orleans-porch-worthy version of the Cranberries’ classic “Linger.” “There was nothing ironic or gimmicky about wanting to do those,” notes Blasucci. “I just really, really love those songs.”

‘One sick party record bursting with overdriven guitars, triumphant trumpet lines, and battling drum assaults that seem to break through walls with the barrelling force of a thousand Kool-Aid men’ Pitchfork 8.7 BNM

The Go! Team burst onto the scene back in 2004 with their debut album “Thunder, Lightning, Strike” putting the disco in discordant & red limiting all the levels. They scored Pitchfork Best New Music, a Mercury music prize nomination and, from a small bedroom concern in Brighton, UK, emerged to take on the world, lighting up stages on every continent.

Nineteen years later The Go! Team, led by main man Ian Parton and MC Ninja, are still releasing brilliant, ever more eclectic albums (see this year’s Get Up Sequences Part 2).

STREET DATE 02 June 2023

uh’s music represents a restless blurring of pastoral and urban. The brother-sister duo of Dominic and Fionnuala Kennedy’s debut album humanus is embedded in the London that they grew up in. It’s a record that hurtles into the expanse of its surroundings rather than carefully probing them.

humanus is a record focused on the present. Amidst its raw acid synths, long form hardware workouts and soaring vocals is an album that’s ultimately about the pair’s own relationship both creative and personal.

Their sibling connection allowed uh to align with some self-made rules when it came to the creative process. Eventually recorded at PRAH Studios in Margate, many of the tracks that make up the al-bum existed in various forms within their pre-pandemic live performances. The duo were keen to keep these moments as natural as possible when it came to committing them to record, minimising any editing and layering so as to avoid overworking the music. Although structures inevitably began to take shape through repeated play, they weren’t overthought or forced.

Ecuatoriana - El Universo Paralelo de Polibio Mayorga 1969-1981“ is highlighting one of the Andean Cumbia pioneers. Daring and visionary, with an intrepid vigorous style almost impossible to imitate, Polibio Mayorga established a unique place for himself at the vanguard of tropical music by flirting with avant-garde sounds, a hybrid of cumbia rhythms and traditional tunes, bringing music into the space age in an elaborated sonic flourish with electronic instruments.

The fusion of tropical electronics mixed in with Andean melodies and lyrics describing the cruel reality of migrant workers, achieved massive success and turned Polibio into Ecuador’s most influential musician.

Polibio Mayorga has never considered his music to be “tropical psychedelia” - although he thinks it would make a good name for a band. He has the sense of humour of a genius and the ability to make anyone laugh, yet he remains discreet, eloquent and

Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky) refers to a vast region of northern Argentina located in the Southern Chaco, bordering the provinces of Chaco y Santiago del Estero, that was struck by an iron meteor shower entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Qom mythology considers the "rocks" (aerolites) to have been drops of sweat from the sun; they were worshiped as such, and it was thought that at daybreak, when the skies were clear, some of these “rocks” would transform into trees (here, the myth suggests a notion of Earth’s fertilization through solar system events). The Qom and neighboring ethnic groups such as the Moqoit y Abipones considered Campo del Cielo to be a site in which the Sun and Earth shared an intimate connection, which could be seen as connection between the terrestrial and celestial, the mundane and the divine.

YO! BOOMBOX

Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro and Disco Rap 1979-83

2nd June 2023

Yo! Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hiphop on vinyl and features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA in the period 1979-83.

The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More through to a host of rarities and little- known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school.

The album is released as a deluxe triple LP complete with 3x full inner sleeves of extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. There is also a very-limited one-pressing only special deluxe version that comes with an extra bonus super-rare 7” single of ‘Magic’s Rap’ by Magic’s Trick, aka ex-marine Magic Fraga, a record that was only ever available on US military bases! The album also comes as a deluxe double CD pack with 30-page booklet and slipcase.

Yo! Boombox also features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly, one of a very select group of photographers (alongside Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo) who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip -hop in New York.

These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. Where the first DJs – Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa – were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first pre-sampling rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes. As Chic’s ‘Good Times’ was to ‘Rappers’ Delight’, the songs here feature then-current dancefloor hits such as the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’, Cheryl Lynn’s ‘To Be Real’, MFSB’s ‘Love Is the Message’ while MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique new sound. In fact, the links between disco and rap date back earlier to the ‘party style’ MCing of figures such as the legendary DJ Hollywood or radio DJs like Frankie Crocker.

This new Soul Jazz Records collection celebrates these first old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.

BROWN SPIRITS

Solitary Transmissions

2nd June 2023

Sounds like Can meets Hawkwind!

Unbelievably killer and super, super heavy brand new Psyche/Krautrock album coming out of nowhere from Brown Spirits, new on Soul Jazz Records!

Brown Spirits are from Melbourne, Australia. Their stripped down and tight musical unit is a trio (think Cream or Hendrix!) of raw bass, drums and shared guitar/keyboards meets the D-I-Y attitude and punk/post-punk intensity, giving them a unique hi-octane sound.

After two exclusive 100-pressing white label 45s sold out in less than 30-mins, Soul Jazz Records are releasing this album immediately.

Like their labelmates Trees Speak, Brown Spirits have a love all things Krautrock – mixed with an overwhelmingly powerful lo-fi psyche and punk attitude. The album features super heavy and raw drums, tough basslines, heavy fuzzed-out wah and psyche guitar and analog moog synthesizers, all recorded on analogue ¼ inch tape. In short – they rock!

With a range of influences that range from Neu! to Soft Machine, Gang of Four, Miles Davis, Hendrix, Argent, Lonnie Liston Smith, King Crimson and beyond, their powerfully progressive hard and hypnotic sound is truly unforgettable.

‘Inflatable Gravestone’ is the debut album by Mun Sing (aka Giant Swan’s Harry Wright).

The motivating force of the album is the sudden loss of Harry’s father in 2020. Their father struggled with substance addiction and the album explores ideas of 'spirituality' and the ‘higher self’ in relation to addiction and its parallels with the coping mechanisms of grief. It also aims to highlight the importance of humour and distraction when coping with loss.

Serving as a narrative for their own experiences, the album is largely built around club-centred tracks (such as ‘Spider’ and ’Squabble’) broken up by moments of yearning and reflection in tracks like ’ The Poison Garden’ and ‘Helhest (Azrael Smirks)’ and moments of dark anguish like 'Inheritor' with its heavy slab-like chords and pensive piano. Flirting with awkward and suggestive rhythms, Wright deliberately suspends moments of resolution and groove in favour of drama and jerky, unexpected cartoonish humour, taking as much influence from the likes of the Art Of Noise as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Wright rewards the listener with moments of clarity and introspection like flags on the journey, recruiting vocalist MX World to deliver lyrics and melodic ideas created by them and their father. Their father’s journals in rehab helped inform most of the lyrics. Some take whole sentences as a way to physically ‘give life’ to his words for the first time. The lyrics describe feelings, revelations and apocalyptic hallucinations. MX World's clear, direct tone suggests folk music and the timelessness of the human condition.

The album concludes with the title track ‘Inflatable Gravestone’ which features a chorus of giddy manipulated laughter from Wright’s friends and family to a truly maddening effect. This is then resolved by bright and clear piano chords and the sound of Wright’s father breathing in his sleep. A deeply affecting and personal record with corkscrew twists and turns and a healthy dose of absurdism.

The journey of South London collective Speakers Corner Quartet to where they are today has been a self-less, community driven calling. Starting as the house band at the legendary Brixton spoken word and hip hop night Speakers Corner in 2006, they spent the following decade backing up other artists and helping them shape their visions – both in live performances and in the studio. The list is extensive, but notable collaborations include Sampha, Kae Tempest, Tirzah, Dean Blunt, the late MF DOOM, and Lianne La Havas. This period honed their craft and versatility as multi-instrumentalist producers, but also shaped their values, building profound long-term relationships in music that comes full circle on their debut album, Further Out Than The Edge.

The quartet is Biscuit on flute, Kwake Bass on drums & percussion, Raven Bush on violin, and Peter Bennie on bass - with a whole bunch of synths and unique toys to boot. Further Out Than The Edge features an extensive list of friends and family, most of who happen to be some of the most exciting names in independent music: Tirzah, Kelsey Lu, Shabaka Hutchings, Coby Sey, Sampha, Kae Tempest, Mica Levi, Joe Armon-Jones, Lawfawndah, Léa Sen, and more.

Chronicle: Act 1, The Ascension

New Heavy Sounds

LP NHSLP043X 5055869549004

Very limited vinyl pressing, 500 copies in a full colour single outer sleeve and full colour printed inner sleeve, housing a 2-colour blue & purple, cosmic swirl vinyl. DL included. CD 4 panel digipack with booklet.

Hailing from Kansas, They Watch Us From The Moon have landed to present their first magnum opus ‘Cosmic Chronicles: Act 1, The Ascension’

A band with riffs as heavy as Osmium and melodic lead guitar lines (think Gilmour meets Buck Dharma) as strong as spider's silk, it’s a wonder they managed to escape the atmosphere. Perhaps it ’s because the sublime vocals of TWUFTM's twin 'Space Angels' Luna Nemesis and Nova 10101001 guide you beautifully through the clouds. In fact their vocals are a total highlight throughout and lift this record far above any genre pigeonholing.

TWUFTM are also a band that has a concept behind the groove. Sci -fi space opera, a love for Bowie and Queen, brought to the fore visually, in their mashing of comic book narratives and Funkadelic style alter ego ’s. TWUFTM are truly an immersive experience on every level.

As to the music the colossal weight of riffs on this first -contact missive are made so gloriously enjoyable by memorable hooks, honed repetition and and an agile rhythm section that can make each one of their (sometimes 10 minute) stargaze rides feel like an epic odyssey. Fellow space travellers Hawkwind and Pink Floyd, and even Spacemen 3, have been in similar orbits before, but never this heavy.

Now, alongside a trajectory charted by Monster Magnet and maintained by The Sword, Ufomammut, White Hills and Witch Mountain .... TWUFTM don't just breathe new life into cosmic tones, they take it to a different level.

In March 2022, Mark McCambridge embarked on a trip to Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia to record the third ARBORIST album. Working alongside Matthew E White (Producer) and recording with the legendary Spacebomb House Band they completed what has become 'An Endless Sequence of Dead Zeros'. . Belfast native Mark McCambridge played his first show as ARBORIST supporting James Yorkston. A solo tour followed before impressive performances led to notable support slots alongside Low, Cat Power, Echo and The Bunnymen and Guy Garvey. Arborist came to the attention of critics with their debut single, the Americana tinged, “Twisted Arrow”, that features an astonishing duet with Kim Deal of The Breeders. Their debut album Home Burial (2016) and the follow-up A Northern View both received glowing praise from the likes of The Guardian (“instant classic. ★★★★” ) MOJO (“…devastatingly bleak… upliftingly beautiful. ★★★★”) and Uncut 8/10.

Neev – Katherine

Trapped Animal LP TAR09V 5055869549844

Debut album, Katherine, a collection of intricate indie -folk songs that pack a lyrical punch. Much of Katherine was recorded at Neev’s home studio and the homes of a host of talented musician friends. “It was really important to me that the album wasn’t only a group of songs but that it would also be a learning curve for me, and it was! I learnt so much about arrangement, frequency, the range of my voice and the way I like to construct songs and write, ” she says. Katherine carries all of the trademark sounds of Neev ’s previous releases. Acoustic guitars, soaring string arrangements and layered backing vocals can be found throughout, but this time they ’re bigger. Standout single ‘Green’, a song about envy, calls to mind artists like Marika Hackman and Fenne Lily. The track was born out of the relief Neev felt being reunited with her band post -lockdown. “It just fell out of me,” she says. “I think my brain just wanted to write a big, fun track for us to play together, ” she says. Every song on Katherine is tied to the idea of identity. “Each song explores the different facets of an individual,” explains Neev. “Them as someone’s child, someone’s sibling, someone’s partner. Someone as the gender (in my case, female) they identify as, someone as the job they do,” she continues. “In certain scenarios we play a role, at work we ’re professional, at our family home we play out our function. Each track adopts a different role. For example, ‘The House’ is told from the point of view of a classic 60s housewife, the song paints them as unsatisfied, frustrated and pessimistic. However, that ’s probably not how they feel all the time but it is when they’re playing their role”. ‘Fast Patterns’ is a real highlight. Written from the point of view of an imperfect friend, the song is about not knowing how to be there for someone in their darkest moments. It asks how far you should go for a friend in need and at what point you need to take a step back. Similarly, ‘Built Your Body’ is an open-hearted ode to finding resilience, the lyrics trace the different ways in which people get through the day. Neev’s passion for theatre and film has been integral to her development as a songwriter. Coming from a long line of actors and directors, she ’s been an avid theatre goer from a young age, with one -person plays being her favourite. “I always find stirring solo shows inspiring as I love monologues and communication centred stories. They give me a huge amount of energy and ideas for lyrics, ” she says. In fact, ‘Seawall’, a song about being stretched too thin, was actually inspired by a one -man play of the same name, written for and starring Andrew Scott. The song, like the play, features the recurring motif of a hole in the middle of the stomach. The album ’s title encapsulates the record’s essence. “Katherine is a common name in my family and it ’s also my middle name,” says Neev. “So whilst it has a personal meaning, it also exists in a few different ways. I named the album ‘Katherine’ because it touches on the themes of family, identity and the different identities one person can hold within themselves. ”

Melt Motif entered the scene in 2022 with their critically acclaimed first album. A reviewer wrote 'Melt Motif arrived with a sound all their own' and the new album will strengthen this claim. Now, less than a year after their debut, the second album is here!

It’s easy to be fascinated by the sound of Melt Motif. One moment it’s dreamy and cinematic. The next it’s aggressive and industrial. Unpredictable and impossible to label, always taking surprising turns. If you have an open mind and a relaxed approach to genres, you might have found a new favorite band.

Melt Motif started as an experiment by Rakel & Kenneth Rasmus Greve. The few who stumbled upon it loved it. So did Apollon Records who signed the band while it still was a secret. Greve searched for the right mixing engineer to develop the sound, and finally teamed up with São Paulo producer and musician, Joe Irente. The collaboration worked smoothly and the common artistic view made it obvious for all parts to make Irente a permanent member of the band. The band has released one album (A White Horse Will Take You Home) and one remix album (Vandalism, vol. 1).

On their debut album, Tilintetgjort presents strange visions of nightmares and dread, alchemical madness and arcane mysteries - blurring the line between insanity and the deepest of truths.

In Death I Shall Arise shows a fierce and passionate band. Focused and inspired, the music shows an abundance of creativity and a will to break down the walls of the stagnating genre that is contemporary black metal. Embark on a journey through the labyrinth that makes up the hunt for truth in a widely delusional world. Filled with inspiration and madness of the soul, In Death I Shall Arise will be your guide through the mysteries of knowledge and death.

The album was meticulously crafted over several years. Through gruelling rehearsals and an arduous creative process, the band honed in on their unique take on black metal. After several months of deep preparation, the ensemble finally entered Chaka Khan Studios in February 2022 to commit the album to tape.

Favoring some older techniques, the vast majority of the album was recorded live over three days. After a few overdubs in Evil Octopus Studios, the album was mixed at Chaka Khan before being mastered by Jack Control of Enormous Door. The result speaks for itself - there is no boring minute to be had.

2020 VISION

This 25-year Anniversary release sounds like it could have been recorded last week in Nashville or fifty years ago in New York Remastered by Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, Wilco) and remixed by Martin Sexton and Danny Bernini (The Fray, James Blunt) from the original analog 24-track reels The new mix further highlights the nuances and magic of these performances by bringing out the classic b3, grand piano and old Fender amps and guitars through vintage Neumann microphones and captures what RollingStone calls Sexton's "soul-marinated voice " Known as the album that put Sexton on the map with songs like "Diner" and "Glory Bound,” Black Sheep is a critically-acclaimed favorite that continues to garner praise and multiple film and television placements year after year
