For the past three Decembers America’s Lucha Libre guitar heroes Los Straitjackets have toured with Nick Lowe for his Christmas-themed “Quality Holiday Revue,” performing classics old and new with the Jesus of Cool. Van discussions with Nick’s co-producer Neil Brockbank led to the speculation: What would Nick’s songs sound like as instrumentals? There was only one way to answer the question. Los Straitjackets delved into Nick’s catalog — from Brinsley Schwarz through Rockpile to his late career as a soulful pop stylist -- and came up with original arrangements of some some of Nick’s most iconic songs. With Brockbank in the producer’s chair the band veers from Pop (“Rollers Show”) to Twang (“All Men Are Liars”) even Exotica (with the Bolero-flavored “I Read a Lot”) and of course surf (“I Live on a Battlefield”). Planet Mu are very excited to announce Jlin's long awaited second album “Black Origami”. A percussionled tour de force, it's a creation that seals her reputation as a unique producer with an exceptional ability to make riveting rhythmic music. “Black Origami” is driven by a deep creative thirst which she describes as “this driving feeling that I wanted to do something different, something that challenged me to my core. Black Origami for me, comes from letting go creatively, creating with no boundaries. The simple de?inition of origami is the art of folding and constructing paper into a beautiful, yet complex design. Composing music for me is like origami, only I'm replacing paper with sound. I chose to title the album "Black Origami" because like "Dark Energy" I still create from the beauty of darkness and blackness. Spirituality and movement are both at the core of “Black Origami”, inspired largely by her ongoing collaborations with Indian dancer/ movement artist Avril Stormy Unger whom she met and collaborated with at her debut performance for the Unsound festival – ”There is a ?ine line between me entertaining a person and my spirituality. Avril, who collaborates with me by means of dance, feels the exact same way. Movement played a great role in Black Origami. The track "Carbon 7" is very inspired by the way Avril moves and dances. Our rhythms are so in sync at times it kind of scares us. When there is something I can't quite ?igure out when it comes to my production, it’s like she senses it. Her response to me is always "You'll ?igure it out". Once I ?igure it out it's like time and space no longer exist.” Similar time shifting/folding/disrupting effects can be heard throughout the record – especially on “Holy Child” an unlikely collaboration with minimalist legend William Basinski. She also collaborates again with Holly Herndon on “1%”, while Halcyon Veil producer Fawkes' voice is on “Calcination“ and Cape Town rapper Dope Saint Jude provides vocals for “Never Created, Never Destroyed“. Jlin will be touring extensively this year and is currently lining up appearances including Sonar festival. Later this year she will be collaborating in London with acclaimed UK choreographer Wayne McGregor who played her music recently on Radio 4's Desert Island Discs and described her music as “quite rare and so exciting".

While their live shows are something to behold, they underscore the sheer musicianship and songwriting that goes into recording their albums. It is a lot of hard work made to look easy. Songs from the record began popping up in sets last year, being worked on live and in the studio, and it is this dedication to their fans to create the best possible live and recorded experiences that drives them to get the best out of both. “Most of the songs on this record are based off of jams, and since we record every jam, most of the tracks here feature moments we actually recorded from those jams. Most artists have to dig through the crates to find that one sample nobody has used but we can sample ourselves having been playing this style of music for awhile now. As a band we try to play it the way the JBs would, as producers we try to mix it the way a DJ would.”

It is in this context that White Hills re-evaluated their approach to creating a new album. Having continually refined their sound, pushing the boundaries of psychedelic music, White Hills flipped the script on Stop Mute Defeat. Dave W. and Ego Sensation have brazenly produced an industrially-charged record that pulsates unlike anything they’ve released before. Hard-line, gritty, and intellectually engaged, Stop Mute Defeat is a New York record through and through. With this in mind, White Hills drafted Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Brian Eno, Afrika Bambaataa) to mix. White Hills recorded with Bisi on two of their previous releases, Frying On This Rock in 2012 and its follow-up So You Are…So You’ll Be, however Stop Mute Defeat is the first time they worked with Martin “The Beast” Bisi in control of the mixing board. A native New Yorker who made his name in the city’s early hip-hop and no-wave scenes, Bisi was attracted to White Hills’ new material for its distinct early-80s Mudd Club feel. A dance hall, drug den, and bar, the Mudd Club was one of New York’s legendary haunts in the late 1970’s. As a center of an distinct art scene the club served as a major influence for White Hills and Stop Mute Defeat’s sound. Following similar techniques to those propagated by William S. Burroughs (a regular at Mudd Club), Stop Mute Defeat sees White Hills break free from the guitar-driven structure of their earlier releases. Reassigning William Burroughs’ word “cut-up” technique to music, Dave W. and Ego Sensation deconstruct sound clips to create minimalist but rhythmically complex phrases. Musically, H-p1, White Hills second full-length for Thrill Jockey, expands on the explorations of previous albums in ambience, noise, and space rock all led by guitarist Dave W.’s blistering guitar solos. H-p1 was recorded at the Ocropolis in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on September 7th & 8th 2010 by Shahin “Showtime”Motia (guitarist of Oneida) and mixed by Dave W. & Pierre Auntour in NYC and by Antronhy in Nottingham, UK. The album was mastered by Heba Kadry at The Lodge. A notable difference is the addition of synthesizer player, Shazzula, for the recordings. Shazzula has performed with the group in Europe on and off throughout 2010. There was no compression used on the record. Instead distortion boxes were used to enhance the natural dynamics of the songs. “The recordings captured ride the faders while mixing the record to bring out certain instruments over others.It is the way it happened when it was recorded.” said Dave W. This is the most fully realized White Hills album to date and the one that takes them furthest from their pure space rock roots. It is also their most angry record. It is a reaction to what White Hills sees as government co-opted and controlled by corporations. On the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day, Ra Ra Riot celebrated the 10th anniversary of their first release (their self-titled EP) by releasing it for the first time ever on vinyl. On the heels of the success of that Record Store Day exclusive limited numbered 45 RPM 12”, the band is releasing a remastered CD version of their long out of print debut. The band personally did the audio remastering, updated the art and is putting it out themselves which is a fitting tribute to the selfproduced work. Originally released on July 10, 2007, Ra Ra Riot is the band’s sole recorded output with their original late drummer, John Pike, who passed away one month prior. Pike co-wrote all lyrics with vocalist, Wes Miles, and also contributed to the music. The music of drummer John Colpitts as Man Forever is explorative, innovative and fearless. A musician and composer equally versed in the disparate musical languages of DIY rock, improvisation, and contemporary classical, Colpitts (aka Kid Millions) has made an album that defies genre classification. Propulsive, elaborate drum arrangements (created with TIGUE Percussion) remain essential to Man Forever - on the songs of Play What They Want, they are augmented by voice and melody with contributions from Laurie Anderson, Yo La Tengo, and Mary Lattimore to name a few. Play What They Want represents the culmination of 25 years of musical engagement by one of New York’s most acclaimed percussionists. The collaborative process, essential to Man Forever, requires the relinquishing of one’s ego for a greater purpose. In Play What They Want Colpitts leverages a vast and talented stable of diverse collaborators to create a work that transcends the sum of its parts. “You Were Never Here” kicks off the album with a gorgeous vocal performance by all members of Yo La Tengo and, like the transition from black and white to technicolor, the piece becomes a driving, wild marriage of Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost,” McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane and Steve Reich. The second side leads with the evocative album centerpiece “Twin Torches.” Here Colpitts worked with the legendary multi-media artist and musician Laurie Anderson, who provided spoken vocals and violin on the nearly 10-minute tour de force. This composition also features arresting vocal atmospherics by Quince, which precede some of the most complex drumming Colpitts has ever recorded. When people talk about Arto Lindsay’s body of work, they often project a reductive dichotomy. There is Scary Arto and Sexy Arto. Scary Arto’s music is stormy and serrated and ruthless and almost deranged; evoking perhaps the glare and noise of New York City. Sexy Arto’s music is seductive and warm and textured and ethereal; evoking perhaps the dappled sunlight of Brazil. Both musics seem dreamlike. In the sense that there are many kinds of dreams. In 2014, Northern Spy issued a unique and conceptually provocative double-disc anthology of Arto’s solo work, called Encyclopedia Of Arto. Disc 1 was a “best of Arto LIndsay” survey of his solo albums. Disc 2 was something much more unusual: many of the same songs from disc one, performed live with Arto’s signature haywire noise guitar (Scary Arto) juxtaposed against his lilting, slyly erotic, post-Caetano vocal style (Sexy Arto).
The choice to marry Sexy and Scary into a single performance was striking and bold. I cannot speak for Arto, but my read of the statement was that it rebuked the notion that his vision is somehow binary. It felt like fresh terrain. This brings us to Cuidado Madame, the long awaited new album, where Arto’s mastery is in full bloom. THE LLOYD MCNEILL QUARTET WASHINGTON SUITE New edition of this very rare deep spiritual jazz album, first released as a private-press album in 1970 on flautist Lloyd McNeill’s own Asha Record label in Washington, DC. First reissued on Soul Jazz Records’ Universal Sound sub-label in 2011 (long deleted) and now available newly digitally remastered on Soul Jazz Records main label. Lloyd McNeill is an African-American flautist, painter, poet, and photographer born in Washington, D.C., in 1935. His multi-disciplinary creative life led to encounters and friendships with Nina Simone, Picasso, Eric Dolphy, Nana Vasconceles and other legendary cultural figures. Lloyd McNeill’s hypnotic ‘Washington Suite’ was originally commissioned as a piece of music for the Capital Ballet Company in Washington, DC. McNeill grew up through the era of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and his life and work is a reflection of those ideals. In the mid1960s he moved to France where he became friends with Picasso, working with a number of émigré-jazz musicians whilst living in Paris.

High Sunn started as the bedroom solo project of San Francisco's Justin Cheromiah at the age of 14. Since that first release in May 2014, he 's released no less than 30 releases, in a prolific mix of singles, EPs and full albums. Now 17 years old, just finishing his junior year at High School, Justin is presenting his first ever studio recording- the "Hopeless Romantic" EP. Along with the move from the bedroom to the studio, Justin brought his friends and live band- Joe (drums), Freddy (lead guitar) and Ari (bass), not to mention producer Dylan Wall (Naomi Punk, Craft Spells etc), all of whom contribute into making the jump from the lo-fi bedroom sound into a fully fledged dream pop record. About Globally renowned for his vibrant, melodic sets and productions, Brasil's DJ Marky has been playing records for over a quarter of a century, making his debut at the tender age of twelve (yes, really). In the late 90's, Marky's fresh energy and eclectic influences provided a much-needed tonic for the UK's Drum & Bass scene; his sun-drenched crossover anthem 'LK' eventually entering the UK Top 20 in 2002. The intervening years have been spent spinning records all over the world to rapt audiences, as well as absorbing more and more wide-ranging global sounds to add to his distinctive style. Marky's long awaited debut album finally dropped in 2015, aptly titled 'My Heroes', reflecting this uncommonly humble artist's habit of constantly championing his favourite musicians and musical inspirations. With this unselfish spirit firmly in mind, we are proud to announce the release of 'Influences Vol. 2', a compilation album and DJ mix showcasing a selection of Marky's favourite music, created with a healthy disdain for genre-puritans and an emphasis on fun. Shit Girlfriend is a way of life. Shit Girlfriend does not overthink. Everything is natural. The conception, songwriting, production, visuals - all the output is as DIY DI as you can get, and all conceived and delivered within an extremely short timeframe. The process is intense. ‘Race To Zero’ is the new album by musician and composer John Matthias and producer, musician and composer Jay Auborn, set for release on 19th May via Village Green. The album’s starting point was a series of acoustic improvisations recorded in a variety of locations, from a 700 year old chapel in the Devon countryside to a basement studio in Reykjavík, Iceland. In an attempt to create a fractured sense of space reflective of the digital condition, the duo found themselves working within a place that could only exist in the digital landscape. By crushing the recordings through

a hundred different virtual rooms of reverb and other chaotic digital processes; they collided, soared and splintered into sweeping new rhythms, melodies and drones. Pushing the computer’s processor beyond its limits threw up sonic “errors” that wouldn’t be easily possible to create through standard methods. In response, these outcomes created new and unplanned inspiration for further composition. Elements of the album were then produced binaurally adding a three dimensional listening experience. The outcome is a unique landscape that blurs the line between the virtual and physical worlds.

An evocative suite of synth improvisations, Burials In Several Earths evokes the haunting qualities of their classic work whilst exploring fresh new vistas of sound. Conjuring up atmospheric, immersive textures that mix tried-and-trusted ana analogue techniques and leading edge digital technologies, the release connects the dots between the work of pioneering British electronic composers such as Delia Derbyshire and artists whose work bares the unmistakable genetic footprint of the Radiophonic Workshop: the likes of Cavern Of Anti-Matter, Pye Corner Audio and Children Of Alice.
The vinyl edition is a deluxe quadruple 10” boxset (including fold-out doublesided poster and download card) featuring edits of the tracks unique to this al edition, and an alternate mix that does not appear on the CD and digital versions. The formatting is a subtle nod to the retrospective 4 x 10” set the Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label put out in 2003. The band originally existed between 1991 and 2007, running a renegade stylistic gamut from hardcore Free Jazz improvisation to rigorous modernist composition, under the dictatorship of composer and instrumentalist Weasel Walter. The Secular Arm, Weaver’s first solo release on Hausu Mountain, follows 2016’s Form A Log / Moth Cock split LP (HAUSMO31). The album zooms into a vision of twisted baroque composition cobbled together from shards of exotica, library music, and a big ole “?”-shaped style unique to Weaver’s idiosyncrasies. Animated by layered organ and guitar lines, lurching percussion patterns, and his own vocals, Weaver’s tracks play out like soundtracks to vaudeville skits or black-and-white cartoons broadcasted from an alternate history of the 20th century. Forced Into Femininity is Chicago-based multimedia performance artist Jill Lloyd Flanagan. Heterochromea, her first release on Hausu Mountain, compresses the mania and ferocity of her project into a dense eleven minute program designed as an assault on the expectations of the listener. Forced Into Femininity punctuates her unhinged vocal performances with screams and stentorian spoken word proclamations that sound out alongside fragments of melodic quasi-crooning. Her voice fuses the bark of post-punk or hardcore with the wailing catharsis of Diamanda Galás, while the composite sum of her vocals and productions reaches us as an alien breed of industrial noise performance at its most transfixing heights of confusion.
