This Issue: Michael Schulman at Slumberland Records

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

I think that it’s been the same for our bands as for many others - while there was still strong interest in the music it just wasn’t possible to tour and have that more personal, direct connection with the fans. For small bands and small labels it almost feels *more* important to have that, since we can’t always count on extensive press or radio support.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

I’ve been a music fan for as long as I can remember and spent a lot of time during my pre-teen years exploring my parents’ pretty-decent record collection. When I hit my teens I got into punk then post-punk, DIY, indie labels etc and was WAY into record collecting. Early in my college years

I worked at my college radio station (WMUC, at the University of MD, College Park) and made weekly (sometimes daily!) trips to local record shops. This led to what I might consider my first industry job, working in a suburban MD record store called Vinyl Ink.

When and where did the label begin?

When I started at college (1983) there weren’t *that* many people who were into the kind of music that I was, and we all tended to find each other at the radio station, at gigs, at the local record shops. I had a particularly tight posse that I would hang out with, listen to records, go to shows, etc. We were into noise rock sort of stuff (Sonic Youth, Swans, Big Black, Head of David, The Birthday Party, etc) but also DIY/indie pop like Creation label, K, Flying Nun, Postcard and the like.

The Jesus & Mary Chain was a galvanizing influence because they kind of mashed all of that up, which was super exciting to us. After seeing the Mary Chain play in DC in November 1985 a few of us decided to make the jump from just listening to also making music. Most of us had no or very little experience, so we were making an awfully primitive racket. As time went on and our group of friends had coalesced into a few different groups (Whorl, Velocity Girl, Black Tambourine) and started playing shows, we wanted to document what we were doing, so one of us bought a 4-track cassette deck and we all started tinkering with making recordings.

With recordings in hand and being a bunch of vinyl-obsessed goofs, we thought it might be a giggle to make a single. Since what we were doing seemed too weird and primitive to take to other labels, and since some of us worked at stores and sort of knew how distribution worked, we figured we might as well do it ourselves. Slumberland’s first release was a 3 song compilation 7”, which came out in December 1989.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

A lot of the original SLR crew were into comics and at the time there were some reprints of an early 1900s Sunday comic called Little Nemo In Slumberland coming out. It’s an amazing strip, and the weird psychedelic nature of it appealed. Slumberland Records it was.

How has the label changed since it started?

It’s been over 30 years so there’s been a LOT of change - moving to the west coast, going through periods of varied levels of activity, rolling with it when certain records have taken off well beyond our expectations. In some ways the biggest change came early - the decision to go outside our group of friends and start putting records out by other people. That move transitioned the label from being a vanity project to being more of a *real* label, and I’m still reckoning with that decision 30 years later!

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. When we first started the label was a collective effort of that original group of friends that comprised the first batch of bands. We all pitched in to stuff records in sleeves, pack orders, etc. After a few years more and more of the work wound up in my hands – partially because I was willing to do it, and because the stock was at the house I lived in and also because some of the other folks were in a band that was becoming more popular and keeping them on the road touring. When I moved to California the label came with me, and since then it’s been a one-person show, spiced up by the occasional intern or record stuffing party with friends.

When we started the label we definitely focused on the DC-area bands that started the label and the small scene that grew up around/with them, like Lorelei, The Ropers, Lilys, etc.

After we moved to California we started working with Bay Area/Sacramento/north bay bands like Henry’s Dress, Rocketship, The Aislers Set and The Softies. In the last several years we’ve released a lot of records by Bay Area bands, like The Reds, Pinks & Purples, The Umbrellas, Kids On A Crime Spree, Artsick, Lunchbox and more. I’ve never thought of Slumberland as locals-only label but I do like working with bands that you can hang out with and go see play live a lot. It’s just fun that way!

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I reckon that most people would think of Slumberland as an indiepop label, and while we certainly (and unashamedly!) have put out a lot of indiepop records, I’d like to think we cover a lot more territory than that, though all under the general banner of indie guitar pop/rock.

How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

I don’t think the goals have really changed all that much. I just want to release records that I like that fit into this ongoing narrative that we’ve developed. I don’t have any illusions about growing the label; my goal is to help bands get their music heard and whatever success follows that is sort of incidental.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?

I wouldn’t exactly call it wild, but we did do subway stations ads for Weekend’s Jinx ‘cause we got a great deal on them. I have no idea how effective they were but they sure looked cool!

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??

Just as we never stopped pressing vinyl, even in the dark days of the early and mid 00s, we also never stopped making CDs and will continue to do so as long as people want them. We have started making cassettes for some releases – it’s nice to have a format that we can economically make in small numbers and that doesn’t take a year to manufacture!

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

I think the typical SLR fan is an explorer, someone who does their own digging and doesn’t wait for the press to tell them what’s up. They’re fans of good songwriting and put more value on tunes than whether a band is cool or being talked about. And obviously they have exquisite taste!

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

That would have to be the advent and growth of digital music, from the early years of file sharing to the near-collapse of record retail to the brief bounce of digital sales and now to what might be the end-game of streaming. While I welcome the democratizing nature of digital music, its ubiquity does make it harder and harder to sell records, and I think in some ways trivializes the art itself, commodifying and devaluing it.

If you had to start a new sub-label, what would it be called and what kind of music would it be geared towards?

I used to co-operate a side label that specialized in leftfield electronic/dance records, and if I started another side or sub-label it would probably also be in that area, and/or new jazz.

“She turns...found sounds into musique concrète that locates grains of emotion in the mundane — a car door slamming, a lighter igniting, the plink of an Apple keyboard mid-text. What a songwriter might convey in poetry, Rousay evokes with raw audio.” - New York Times

Selling Points:

• Reissue of acclaimed LP

• Praise for claire rousay from the New York Times, Pitchfork, The Guardian, The Wire

• “On a softer focus, she captures a newfound intimacy, one that’s grounded and personal while still feeling otherworldly.... rousay unearths modes of expression that make it hard to remember a time when ambient music sounded any differently.” - Pitchfork

Recorded entirely in 2021, Perfect Worlds, the newest album by San Francisco's mysterious lo-fi pop legend Tony Jay, delivers an intimate record of thirteen dreamy, assured arrangements that further cements Tony Jay's status as a dejected crooner of the quotidian par excellence. Drawing inspiration from failed relationships, lack of sleep, a bicycle injury, and depression, Tony Jay (headed by Flowertown/Sad Eyed Beatniks member and SF scene mainstay Michael Ramos) pairs catchy melodies and hushed vocals with ethereal instrumental tracks.

Studded with instant classics, Tony Jay's new album encapsulates the isolation and loneliness of the past few years. "In a perfect world I'd find a place down in the basement," begins the title track, and the refrain repeats, "You just can't escape it." Interspersed with otherworldly instrumental tracks that call to mind a machine struggling to work underwater and whale mating calls combined with droning synth, horns, chimes, this album also provides space for listeners to make new worlds of their own. Our times may be inescapable, but we're fortunate to be able to wall ourselves in with fantasies of our own creation alongside "Perfect Worlds."

1994 brought their self-titled sixth album The Cult, sometimes also known as the “Black Sheep” album due to the cover image. Recorded again with Bob Rock, It is a very personal album with a lot of the narrative subject matter referring to Astbury’s younger years. Unlike their previous albums, this one revealed itself more slowly with each listen. This album is considered an overlooked and underrated gem and preceded their 1995 break-up.

The band reformed in 1999 and continues to tour and release albums, including their most recent, 2022’s Under The Midnight Sun.

STREET DATE: May12th, 2023

Highly anticipated would be an understatement; since their inception Overmono have purposefully cultivated a fanbase that heralds them as one of the UK’s most original contemporary live electronic acts. A run of ground-breaking club EPs between 2020 and 2022 built momentum and culminated in their breakthrough club single, ‘So U Kno’, which encapsulated the hearts of clubbers and went on to become a bonafide phenomenon as dancefloors re-opened; featuring in end of year lists published by Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, DJ Mag and Mixmag. Since then, Overmono have been named ‘Best Live Act’ at the prestigious DJ Mag Best of British Awards, taken their custom audio-visual live show to the most credible festivals across the globe, including Glastonbury, Movement Festival, Dekmantel, and produced innovative releases including their instalment of their ‘Fabric Presents’ DJ mix series and collaborations with Joy Orbison. Now, Overmono return to present their most ambitious release to date. Across the twelve-track project, Overmono journey through a powerful distillation of their musical career so far; incorporating “So U Kno” alongside new music that propels them beyond the dancefloor. “Good Lies” remoulds and interweaves captivating vocal cuts into a series of multi-genre electronic sounds that flits effortlessly between euphoria and melancholy in the same 4-bar loop

SPIRIT THEY'RE GONE, SPIRIT THEY'VE VANISHED

(REMASTERED 2023)

OVERVIEW

Chiming laments for a childhood's end, the debut album from Animal Collective, Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished opens with the phrase "want to hear a secret, I know one," suggesting these secrets just might be buried deep within the flocks of high frequencies, electronic glitches, bleeps and swells that follow. Originally released in 2000 and credited to Avey Tare & Panda Bear prior to the full, collective band name being used on releases, this reissue features remastered audio and new artwork by Abby and Dave Portner.

THE THREE O’CLOCK BAROQUE HOEDOWN REMASTERED, EXPANDED

EDITION

The debut EP from The Three O’Clock is celebrating its 40th anniversary with an expanded, remastered, LP reissue. Upon its release, Maximum Rock N Roll called it, “Psychedelic pop without the acid flashbacks…remarkable.” AllMusic wrote, “their cover of the Easybeats’ ‘Sorry’ is worth the price of admission alone.” This is the release that put The Three O’Clock on the map in L.A., where the band quickly became a signature part of the Paisley Underground scene, a term coined by Three O’Clock vocalist/bassist and chief songwriter Michael Quercio. This 40th Anniversary Expanded LP Edition, contains the five original songs from the LP with four additional recording from the era added to make it album length. One of the additional songs is a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Lucifer Sam”. The LP is a limited edition translucent red vinyl pressing of 1500 worldwide. The album was remastered by Bill Inglot and Dave Shultz. The LP lacquer was cut at Bernie Grundman and pressed at Citizen Vinyl.

HIGHLIGHTS:

☛ Expanded CD/LP with four additional songs recorded around the time of the original EP

☛ Remastered by Bill Inglot and Dave Shultz

OVERVIEW

James Ellis Ford (Simian Mobile Disco & The Last Shadow Puppets) has been hidden in plain sight for his entire two-decade-long career. The composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter has worked with some of the biggest names in music, from Arctic Monkeys to Depeche Mode via Foals, Gorillaz and Kylie Minogue, but has always dedicated himself to the success of these projects almost to the point of self-erasure.

He alone has crafted one of the most bewitching and persuasive albums of 2023. The ten tracks are as much homage to the tender and eccentric English pop music of Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt as it is love letter to his wife and son’s Palestinian roots. With The Hum, James Ellis Ford has finally come out of hiding.

RAHILL FLOWERS AT YOUR FEET

Release Date: 12th May 2023

Flowers At Your Feet, the debut solo album from Rahill, is available on olive green color 1LP with artworked insert. The album includes a collaboration with Beck.

Originally hailing from Detroit and currently based in upstate New York, Rahill Jamalifard is a multidisciplinary artist working within numerous overlapping musico-poetic traditions.

Informed by her upbringing in a diasporic Iranian-American household, as well as her lifelong, genre-spanning musical explorations, Rahill’s forthcoming solo releases constitute, at once, a natural progression of—and departure from—her work with the seminal NYC psych-rock outfit, Habibi, which she co-founded. Rahill’s songs occupy a familiar, contemplative mode—blending jazz, trip/hip-hop, and folk traditions spanning east and west.

The album features a collaboration with avant-pop legend Beck on single “Fables”, which also includes a music video featuring Rahill, Beck, and Iranian-American actress Medallion Rahimi (NCIS Series). The album also includes production from Alex Epton (FKA Twigs, Jamie xx, Vampire Weekend).

After the pandemic hit, and the people of the world suddenly grew wary and suspicious of one another, Iguana Death Cult, one of Europe’s most exciting rock exports, became more than just a band to its members—it became therapy. “I think for the first ten times we went to jam,” says guitarist/vocalist Tobias Opschoor, speaking about the process of making the new album Echo Palace, “we just drank wine and talked about it, and just kept on talking for hours—and then were like, ‘OK, I have to go because I have to work tomorrow.’”

Taking place at frontman Jeroen Reek’s apartment in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, these gatherings slowly shifted from talking about this surreal chapter of their lives—the days of quiet streets and cramped buildings—to making music about it. “I was living in a really crappy, leaky, ready-for-demolition apartment,” explains Reek, “with just one heat source—like a really old-school, gas stove kind of thing.” Working on cold nights, they had to gather around that heater together—a cozy approach that ultimately got their creative flow going, fast.

Armed with the talents of Justin Boer on bass and Arjen van Opstal on drums, and tapping the keys work Jimmy de Kok for the first time on album, the band took their trademark melodic garage-rock style and expanded it out to make it vibier and looser, with each member contributing ideas to develop the sound palette in full. “We all get into this sort of blender and then everybody gives a little bit of a flavor to it,” says Opschoor.

The sounds they started to make tapped into the band’s acerbic bite established on their first two LPs, 2017’s The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life and 2019’s Nude Casino—albums that sometimes felt like Parquet Courts colliding with Super Furry Animals. (Paste described Nude Casino as evoking “the colorful mischief of nights out where even a humdrum accountant can feel like a Clint Eastwood desperado.”) Their explosive performances of these records turned them into a cult live act among psych fans, who have thrashed to the band everywhere from Amsterdam to Austin. (It was during a particularly bananas set at SXSW that the band won over Innovative Leisure.) But working on this new album, huddled together as the world split apart, everything began to flutter like Remain in Light.

Echo Palace may be the Iguana Death Cult music that’s most overtly about the strange cause and effect of groupthink, but the theme has been lurking there since the very beginning, when the band was first formed by childhood friends Reek and Opschoor over ten years ago. The name of Iguana Death Cult is a partial nod to Reek’s fascination with cults in general—and the “Iguana” part is a nod to Iggy Pop, whose first band was the Iguanas. Watching the pandemic paranoia and conspiracy theories steeping across their country, Reek wrote lyrics reflecting the scene in front of him: “Purple, veiny soccer mommies,” he sings in a deep, foreboding voice on the song “Echo Palace,” “Sharpening their guillotines.” It’s a cut so infectious that it betrays the density of its lyrics, which were adapted from a poem Reek wrote about the repercussions of “shutting yourself off from everyone outside of your own ideology.”

When it came time to record the full set, the band headed to PAF Studio in Rotterdam, and then had the self-produced album subsequently mixed by Joo-Joo Ashworth (Sasami, Dummy) at Studio 22 in Los Angeles and mastered by Dave

Cooley (Tame Impala, Yves Tumor). As the instruments swirl and trade solos on “I Just a Want House,” a funky millennial nihilist anthem, you can practically hear the growth of a group that’s been pushing itself further and further with every tour and every Belgian-stove fuelled jam session. The album is a big swing, stretching Iguana Death Cult beyond its garage rock origins and taking them to a new realm. It’s the type of project that warranted having legendary Dutch saxophonist Benjamin Herman stop by to add to the squall on tracks like “Oh No” and “Sensory Overload,” heady thrashers that morph into calculated freakouts; that warranted Reek and Opschoor knowing when screaming their guts out on tracks like “Pushermen,” and Boer and van Opstal knowing when to bring the rhythm section to a jazzy simmer on tracks like “Paper Straws.”

The end result of Echo Palace is an appropriately worldly album from a group breaking past the confines of its home country. That’s not to say that Iguana Death Cult aren’t proudly Dutch; the group takes from the trademark hard work ethic of their Rotterdam base and applies it to their approach with music. But it’s 2022, and we’re less defined by our borders than ever before. “When we play in other countries, for me that gives the same amount of pleasure—or even more—than when we play in the Netherlands,” says Opschoor.

“We’re not just little countries anymore, everything is global,” adds Reek, speaking about society at large—but he might as well be speaking about Iguana Death Cult itself. “We’re turning into a global thing.”

"Dutch band Iguana Death Cult's rip-roaring melodies are built to jettison far beyond their homebase of Rotterdam." - FADER

"Frenetic, intense sonic assaults, they turn psych punk into astonishingly concise three-dimensional documents." - CLASH

"Jangly, angular guitars fight for space in the track with a bobbing bassline holding it all in together...This jam would fit on your playlists with Parquet Courts, Ty Segall or Television and is a catchy starting point to get a feel for their well-executed blend of rock and roll fringe." - KCRW

"With a carousel of outlandish and frisky guitar tones, Iguana Death Cult curate something absurd and sportive, yet illuminating."- Paste

A simple declaration of peace and reality shouldn’t ignite a movement, but when it does, it’s good to have a photographer around.

And so it was, in April of 1966, when three patrons of NYC’s Julius’ bar stated: “We are homosexuals. We are orderly, we intend to remain orderly, and we are asking for service." Today, the photo of this moment hangs on the wall of Julius’. Today, gay bars in NYC are not only legal, but plentiful, thanks to the artistic tradition of telling the truth about a time and a place.

Singer-songwriter Seán Barna, a viscerally outspoken queer artist and performer, is embedded in this tradition. With his second LP and Kill Rock Stars debut, Seán invites you to An Evening at Macri Park—a character study of the dimly-lit Brooklyn queer bar, Macri Park, and the creatures who thrive within its walls.

Seán was a semi-professional drummer by age fourteen and graduated with a degree in classical percussion at age twenty-two. Barna has since served as the drummer of Deaf West Theatre’s Los Angeles production of Spring Awakening and the national Broadway tour for The Producers. Living in Berlin in 2011, as a regular at an English-speaking open mic at the now-closed Neukölln bar, Lagari, Seán began to explore his voice as a songwriter.

Recorded at 1809 Studios in Macedon, NY, Seán would write late into the night as producer Dave Drago and his young children slept. Early in the morning, they would record the previous evening’s riches. Moving fast, the bar Macri Park became the center of a song cycle documenting giddiness, grief, history, and everything in-between. He enlisted friends, including Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz and David Immerglück, harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis, Danielle Ponder, and Maria Taylor of Azure Rae, to bring this world to life.

Bringing together ambient music, impressionism, sound poetry, and jazz, Dog Dreams is a rumination on the doublesidedness of trauma and love, on how one does not undercut the other, but are rather interlocked in an affective dialectic. Although its name comes from the literal translation of the Korean term “개꿈”—which could mean anything from fanciful daydreams to nightmarish terrors, but always alluding to the idea that they are nonsensical, unrealistic, or simply silly—Lucy Liyou’s sophomore album instead takes seriously these questions of why we dream what we dream, what slumber offers us that sober reality fails to, and which forgotten desires dare only emerge as our bodies go to rest.

Already a multi award-winning and established artist, with a growing global reputation, South African artist Bokani Dyer presents his newest record ‘Radio Secheba’ - due for release on digital, CD & 12” vinyl formats on 12th May 2023 via Brownswood Recordings.

This 15-track album continues Dyer’s creative journey of making rich and immersive music which places him amongst the new wave of South African jazz artists, including the likes of Siya Makuzeni and Nduduzo Makhathini.

‘Radio Sechaba’ provides an intimate view into South Africa’s multifaceted people - and an opportunity for global connection through music. The meaning behind ‘Sechaba’ in the album title is nation. The record hones into the related topics of nation-building and unity and this is no ordinary topic for Dyer, who was born into a Botswanan community in exile from apartheid. The title of this thought-provoking album echoes that of “Radio Freedom”the voice in exile of the African National Congress.

LEE

Since the release of the Sentimental Fool , Lee Fields has been touring relentlessly, playing to capacity crowds all across the US and EU with the drive and determination of an artist a fraction of his age. The fruits of which have culminated in his song "Forever" being featured in 2023ʼs top rated Super Bowl commercial, further solidifying Lee as the king of soul. In keeping with the momentum it is our pleasure to announce the release of his brand new single "Waiting on the Sidelines".  Written by Thomas 'TNT' Brenneck (MSB, Charles Bradley, Diamond West Records) this beat-ballad grooves low and slow, giving Lee ample room to unleash a heartbreakingly soulful display of vocal acrobatics–an absolute must-have for fans of the Penrose sound. On the flip you'll find "You Can Count on Me", an in demand, upbeat moover previously only available on a limited edition 12" EP. Now bow to the king!

RP Boo's essential first album, 2013's ‘Legacy’ caused a storm of acclaim worldwide as people finally started to piece together his true place in Footwork and the powerful legacy of his work as an innovator. In parallel with productions, his always on-point DJ sets have lit up festivals and clubs worldwide and continue to do so to this day, notably leading to him being named one of the ‘100 World’s Best DJs’ in a recent book by DJ Mag.

Now ‘Legacy Vol.2’ continues his story. Featuring tracks created between 2002 and 2007, this is a wonderous selection of material, some known, some unknown. The album kicks off with the dark and epic ‘Eraser’ created in September 2007, during a time RP was going to underground Footwork club War Zone on the west side of Chicago. The track was inspired by, and created to fuel, the “taunting words of intimidation” between dancers.” And now it makes for one intense album opener.

Some cuts have simple sources – for example ‘Total Darkness’ from 2004 was inspired by, and made in tribute to the Footwork dance troupe of the same name. Some tracks are inspired by movies, for example ‘Heavy Heat’ was inspired by Full Metal Jacket and ‘Say Grace’ by ‘Colors.’

Some cuts are inspired by everyday life – take for example 2005's ‘Pop Machine’, which was inspired by the time he was working at Speedway Oil Change who had a temperamental soda/pop machine. One day, a customer put money in the machine and nothing came out, so he continued to press the button, and for some reason RP found this funny so he went over to the machine and started pressing the buttons himself and everyone he touched started saying “Work!.” Inspired once he was back home in his studio he made ‘Pop Machine’ in tribute to the defunct machinery. When he came back to work the next day and played the track for all this co-workers it blew their minds and they also laughed with at how creative RP could get using things from his everyday life as inspiration. ‘Pop Machine’ also illustrates how RP’s Footwork uses repetition and minimalism as fuel.

Looking back on the period in which these cuts were made RP Boo recalls “The Footwork scene was very scattered around. (There were) very few places to see Footworkers showcase their moves. Then around 2005, things stated to change when the War Zone created By Wala (Jerome Williams) on the West Side of Chicago gave a platform for the dancers to come and do what they do best. Then, Battle Grounds surfaced on the South Side of Chicago where you would hear the future of footwork tracks being played by DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn.”

Years later RP Boo is still inspired by Foot Work – the art of dancing and working for dancers. He continues to shake up clubs and isn’t afraid to get out from behind the decks and drop some Foot himself. We’ll let the man himself have the final word - “What inspires me to keep going is seeing the people having an awesome time moving on the dance floor, as well as playing music that is a recognizable part of my life. I’m one with it.”

New from Strut, a fresh reissue of the classic debut album Try And Love from one of Nigeria’s most celebrated Afro-rock bands, Ofege.

Formed by guitarist Melvin Ukachi and bassist Paul Alade while young students at St Gregory’s school in Lagos, Ofege first found their feet borrowing instruments and supporting school band The Groove Makers. Discovering drummer M-ike Meme by chance at a school dance and adding Dapo Olumide on keys and Felix Inneh on rhythm guitar, they met EMI’s resident producer / A&R man, Odion Iruoje who promptly auditioned them. Sneaking them out of school to record their first sessions (Ofege literally means “breaking bounds”), Iruoje honed the band into a tighter unit and their debut album Try And Love was recorded at EMI’s Studios in 1972. “Odion was like a Sergeant Major, explains Ukachi “He drilled us for the whole day until we became tight.”

The album caught the imagination of a young Nigerian crowd fascinated by the new teen band and Ofege joined a fresh wave of homegrown artists coming through in the wake of Fela’s towering influence and other Afro-rock bands like Monomono, Ofo The Black Company and Blo (Blo’s Berkley Jones contributed wild guitar solos to this album and continued working with the band).

Try And Love mixed driving Afro-funk and rock tracks like the instrumental ‘Gbe Mi Lo’ and ‘Whizzy Llabo’ about a fellow student with hair like a wizard. Ukachi also contributed ballads including the title track and ‘It’s Not Easy’, most recently featured in TV series What We Do In The Shadows.

Trace is a masterclass in sound design. Alison Chesley’s formidable skill as a cellist and composer ground the compositions with rich organic sounds of cello and bow. Will Thomas’s equally deft hand manipulated electronics, keyboards create potent frameworks that bolster the sense of mystery and searching across the album. Chesley and Thomas’s unique voices as composers remain discernable and present throughout the album, but Trace is a celebration of connection of collaboration with an acute sense of details and the power they convey. On Trace, the duo utilize timbre, tone and dynamics as essential tools in crafting stunning emotive narratives. Together, the duo wield sound with inquisitive aplomb, burrowing into each other’s sonic aesthetics and unearthing irrefutable beauty. Chesley is an unparalleled cellist and composer who has been making boundaryless music for nearly three decades under the moniker Helen Money. From her work in Verbow to her solo releases, extending to her work as a highly sought after collaborator with Jarboe, Bob Mould, Steve Albini, Neurosis and many more, Chesley has remained a singular voice and a pioneer in expanding the scope and perception of the cello. Will Thomas is an active composer for commercials, TV, and film (GvsE, CSI, The Haunted Swordsman). He has also contributed to several of Helen Money’s solo albums and an ongoing collaboration with Roger Eno

“A grim and beautiful mediation...Alison Chesley is Godzilla on the cello, a virtuoso who crushes all in her path, then slips deep into oceans of near silence.” -Chicago Tribune

“The product of a cellist who has applied and transcended classical technique to music that shuttles between semipopular and experimental methodologies” - The Wire

“Her creative use of the cello with some sparse accompanying percussion and piano tracks creates an intense and subdued atmosphere that is both somber and delicate, and at times visceral and severe.”

Markus Popp is endlessly curious and his music as Oval is delightfully inventive. Since pioneering albums in the 90s systemisch and 94diskont., Oval has continually excavated new spaces in electronic music, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. New album Romantiq finds Popp delivering his most light and delicate tones to date. Like the plucking of harp strings, Popp’s organic and playful approach to sound is warm and bright. Oval continually, confounds with his ability to conjure such lithe, evocative sonics from software.

Romantiq evolved from an audio-visual collaboration with digital artist Robert Seidel for the grand opening of the German Romantic Museum, where a huge outdoor projection covered the museum building. Popp sought a more expansive definition of the romantic, conjuring flickering images that glitch, evolve and collapse in on one another – opulent neo-chamber music lit by the paradoxically heartwarming screen glow of social media flirtations. Popp crafted dozens of short vignettes that each sought to evoke a specific mood or emotion. Processed period instruments trace luxuriant spaces that shift from low-lit chambers to glistening palatial grandeur, glitching through past, present and future. Swelling atmospheres emerge like perfume, rich scents flooding the senses before evaporating on the breeze. Romantiq’s musical oxytocin is made from ancient instruments processed and edited by a modern electronic master with the utmost deftness and delicacy.

2023 marks the twenty-eighth year of Suarasama; it is also the first year for this reissue of their 2013 masterpiece, Timeline.

Irwansyah Harahap and Rithaony Hutajulu , Ethnomusicology lecturers at University of Sumatera Utara, founded Suarasama in 1995 after graduating from the University of Washington Ethnomusicology program. Their music, as expressed on both Timeline and Fajar Di Atas Awan (first issued in 1998, reissued by Drag City in 2008) is hypnotic and joyful; progressing ancient North Sumatran music concepts while referencing the music of adjacent ethnic traditions. “Dukkha,” for example, was written combining Mandailing and Eastern European musical inspirations. Playing this song on African jembe, Indian sruti box and a European lute known as the mandolin, Suarasama instigate a musical synesthesia in the listener that may honestly earn and truly deserve the title of “world music.”

Throughout Timeline, this is largely due to Irwansyah Harahap’s master playing on a variety of stringed instruments including acoustic guitars, Malaysian gambus, mandolin, and an invention of his own design, the saz-guitar. Suarasama’s spirit and intention is further elevated by Rithaony Hutajulu’s vocals, as well as the skilled rhythm playing of Muhammad Amin and Horas Panjaitan, with additional percussion and singing from several others. The sound of Suarasama is the sound of people engaged in a deeply spiritual, constantly moving recital in open space.

Suarasama’s conception of Timeline was a multifaceted one from the start. It grew from the concept of hemiola , a metric rhythmic structure involving the juxtaposition of a 2-beat time signature upon 3-beat time within the same line. The song “Timeline” itself addresses the history of musical lutes around the world as a means of debuting their custom-made lute, the aforementioned saz-guitar. Finally and perhaps most significantly, a “timeline” charts the passage of time, and therefore references Suarasama’s musical path over the years of their existence.

This is especially significant since founder and leader Irwansyah Harahap passed away in 2021 at the age of 60. As difficult as this loss is for his family, friends and fans alike, the reissue of Timeline is seen as a celebration of the vitality and importance of his music career and journey. As a professor, he taught his students about the qualities of North Sumatran traditional music and their relationship to other traditional musics of the world; with the music of Suarasama , he demonstrated the same to listeners across the planet. He worked to preserve the music and the instruments as well, such as the traditional Sumatran taganing, a five-piece set of tuned drums, and hasapi, a lute of the Toba Batak people of North Sumatra. After Irwansyah ’s passing, Ritha’s daughter Niesya said that he had always wanted their music studio Rumah Musik Suarasama, in Simpang Selayang, Medan Tuntungan, North Sumatra, to be a center for music preservation. This dedication to the music was acknowledged in his lifetime through several awards and fellowships around the world, including a recognition from the Ministry of Culture and Education of Indonesia as the pioneer of the World Music genre in Indonesia.

Suarasama mourn the loss of their leader, Irwansyah Harahap, and grieve his passing. They intend to continue his legacy and spread his music to the world. As shall we – with the eternally resonant music of Timeline, crossing as many borders as possible, to bring Suarasama’s world music to all the people, everywhere.

SNIFFANY AND THE NITS

THE UNSCRATCHABLE ITCH

Limited edition khaki vinyl version

STREET DATE: 12 May 2023

"The UK's greatest and grossest new band" Creem “This album will end up being one of the best underground British punk LPs of the year" Steve Lamacq, 6 Music

Sniffany & The Nits are a deranged, genuinely troubling punk band from London featuring members of Joanna Gruesome, Ex -Void & The Tubs. A new limited edition khaki vinyl version of their 2022 debut album The Unscratchable Itch will be released on 17 March 2023. Via PRAH Recordings.

Drawing a through line between the British post -punk of The Fall and the new wave of insolent hardcore typified by bands like Lumpy & The Dumpers, The Nits have developed a knack for writing unhinged punk earworms.

LIMITED EDITION Khaki VINYL LP

CAT NO: PRAH051LPX

UPC: 5060918152630

But it’s Sister Sniffany, and her singular lyrical and performance style, who elevates the band beyond the sum of their influences. Her lyrics inhabit the same world as her ‘macabre, visceral’ (It’s Nice That’) cartoons- a world of hidden humiliations, girl abjection, crumpled lager cans, clam chowder and lumpy, over-stuffed dollies. Over the course of The Unscratchable Itch, Sniffany ventriloqui ses a cast of pathetic, unbalanced characters: A secretarial administer tails her Casanova husband to a suburban swingers party: "I can smell him from here: a mix of vaseline, foot cream and Stella beer". A poor old grandmother's glasses fog up as she chastises her granddaughter: "You self -entitled selfish little twat! / Left me to die in a popcorn -walled flat! / Spotty little smelly little prick! / Making your poor grandmother sick!"

But these characters aren’t detached, impersonal creations. As Sniffany explains: “In Sniffany & The Nits I like to exorcise and exhibit the deeply shameful parts of myself that I see as the toxic aspects of my own femininity.” These are confessional songs about love addiction, jealousy, possession, self-loathing and “egg smashing-fury”. Though occasionally they are literally just about Sex & The City, red -pilled incels or grandmothers.

O Williams (Drums), Max ‘Wozza’ Warren (Bass) and Matt Green (Guitar) have been entrenched in the UK DIY scene for years, having played in the aforementioned bands, as well as countless others. Warren also runs the influential left-field label Gob Nation- a home for ‘egg punks’ across the country. As such, the band veer between atonal nowave guitar assault, straight-up hardcore, goth/anarcho or whatever takes their fancy, while remaining identifiably Nit -like. Always grounded by a pounding, pogo-ing rhythm section, The Nits provide the perfect backdrop for Sister Sniffany’s wild, relentless live performances.

Title: PREDATOR ROMANTIC

Label: APOLLON RECORDS

Genre: Slutwave / snuff pop

OVERVIEW

The absolutely legendary slutwave / snuff pop album from LA underground icon Actually Huizenga, for the first time on CD and Vinyl!

Described by Kaltblut Magazine as “something like a blend of 80s Madonna, Marilyn Manson, Annie Lennox and Wednesday Addams, all nicely rounded up into 13 tracks”, this album is a really unique blend of everything and more!

Predator Romantic (released digitally in 2015) was the 2nd and last Actually studio album, before she formed the more industrial band Patriarchy. It contains the songs from her two pretty outrageous films “Heavenly Sin” and “Viking Angel” – watch them if you dare ;)

Elephant Gym - Underwater

Info:

On Underwater, Elephant Gym’s second full-length, there was no single composer overseeing the record To the end of unlocking new sounds for themselves, each member took turns leading production and compositional roles during the creation of the album The result is an expansive cohesion of diverse songs which ow in and out of one another like water Vocal cameos by international collaborators provide another compelling dimension to the record, emboldening a group usually known for their instrumental compositions

The band explains that “Underwater is an idea about a kind of private, mysterious space ” It’s a place where one may go to ponder or concentrate, to clear one’s head, or to just blow off some steam in solitude So, too, is Underwater fundamentally about immersion: immersion in the chaos of feeling, living in the throes of being human-sized in the in nite expanse of existence Elephant Gym deftly weaves this universal concept into their signature sound without ever pulling you out of your personal space, leaving you to yourself underwater

"Ever-active and melodious, bounding in arpeggios and other odd intervals, featuring infrequently-seen techniques like tapping, it's easy to see why the band have been able to stand out "

-Bandwagon

"Carefully synthesizes elements of jazz, ambient, and post-rock into a groove-replete freeform introspection "

No Vacation - Phasing

Info:

Phasing is the latest collection of songs from the wavy-gravy dream-pop group No Vacation, comprised of ve tracks that laconically capture the band’s evolution and compositional acumen While some cuts took only a couple months to complete, others had years-long gestation periods, showing the band’s awareness that patience can be a powerful artistic tool The collaborative writing process on Phasing further demonstrates No Vacation’s growth, wherein each member made contributions outside of their primary instrument Emboldened by this experimentation, each title on Phasing features a distinct structural turn, either breaking up a song entirely in half, or deftly transitioning to an unexpected mood or phrase The result is an instrumentally dynamic, multigenre foray that calls on the sounds of shoegaze and 90s alternative rock, even boasting string arrangements which hearken back to the Romantic Era

le under: electronic experimental rock shoegaze slowcore

Info:

An Insult to

the

Sport is a split offering from the genre-de ant groups They are Gutting a Body of Water and A Country Western. Elements of breakcore, shoegaze, and obtuse slacker rock nd home on An Insult, at times with no bridge at all between the disparate styles In TAGABOW’s “The Brazil”, a stop-on-a-dime is the only thing that separates hazy slowcore and adventurous drum n bass, unambiguous evidence of the band’s penchant for iconoclast composition A Country Western’s side of the split entertains similar stylistic mashups, opening with the atmospheric jungle of “Lung” before lurching into the alt-rock “Keeping up with the Joneses”, whose fuzzed-out lead riff calls back to bygone eras On paper, the combination of styles may read as cacophonous or incompatible, but the end result is instead a measured contrast of sounds, a re ection of the inescapable in uence of our chaotic time and the groups’ environments

Adelaide, Australia-based outfit Los Palms album from last November. The nine-track collection serves up an infectious and hedonistic cocktail of jangly surf-rock, 1960s garage and 13th-floor psychedelia. Los Palms described their sound as "Desert Jangle", with influences all the way from 60s Peruvian bands like Los Saicos, Los Destellos & Los Holy’s to modern Californian sweethearts Allah-Las & LA dirt shredders Night Beats. Whilst taking a trip through Los Palms' 'Skeleton Ranch', listeners can expect songs drenched in heartbreak, love and mystery: "These are neo-psych ghost stories that create a detailed musical landscape by mixing feedback, fuzz, eerie organs and reverb-soaked guitar and vocals." Lviv, Ukraine-based krautrock outfit Sherpa The Tiger are now returning with their second album, 'Ithkuil’. Where their previous work was centred around vintage synths, minimal ambient and neon-lit kraut-disco grooves, ‘Ithkuil’ sees Sherpa The Tiger explore more expansive and layered structures and compositions – incorporating intricate guitars, flute, arpeggiators and jazzy piano references, alongside an array of other elements that originate from a broad spectrum of past and present music genres. With ‘Ithkuil’, the process of creation was shared among 4 musicians, and that approach had a great impact on the final result.” Several years in the making and now released against a backdrop of war and invasion in their home country, ‘Sherpa The Tiger’ say that ‘Ithkuil’ acts as a snapshot of pre-war times: “Since the war caught us in the middle of planning the release as opposed to creating the music itself, the album can be perceived as a wistful reminder of the pre-war life that doesn’t seem to be coming back. The life we actually experienced but lost any recollection of and which we are desperately trying to bring back through the music created by the other us now dwelling in an absolutely different reality.

RIYL: Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, PIL, EBM, Skinny Puppy, Wax Trax. Reports of their demise have been greatly exaggerated - the North has risen again. Close to five years since their last record, Leeds denizens AUTOBAHN re-enter the fray with the release of their third record, Ecstasy of Ruin, on 28th April via Tough Love. Half a decade is both a long time and no time at all: forever changes while some things remain eternal So it goes that AUTOBAHN may have re-emerged with many of the hallmarks of their characteristic blend of industrial post-punk intact, but under the bonnet they’re a much leaner, more focused machine. AUTOBAHN 3.0

If 2017’s The Moral Crossing was a record defined by its dramatic rhythm section, then it’s not insignificant that the 2023 incarnation of AUTOBAHN arrives shaved to a four piece and sans their previous drummer. The change necessitates an evolution. Live drums have given way to drum-machines and sample-based percussion, and with it see the band reconfigure their typically blackened aesthetic into a hardened take on Electronic Body Music. As with their previous record, it’s an entirely self-produced collection, recorded between two self-built studios on a range of analogue equipment, the ghosts of their industrial forefathers haunting the circuits. Indeed, some of Ecstasy of Ruin was made with pieces salvaged from Martin Hannett’s legendary studio. The mark of their presence is clear and AUTOBAHN certainly feel part of the long tradition of crepuscular music to emanate from Northern Britain, be that the transgressive activities of COUM Transmissions from Hull, Sheffield Steel City or the gothic history of their very own hometown. It’s a noble torch they carry

Still, if Ecstasy of Ruin forms part of a rich lineage, it also speaks to right now. No album opens with a song titled ‘Post-History’ and closes with another called ‘Class War’ without some concession to the current condition and its place within it. Industrial music by its very nature is a physical concern, often placing the human body and its experience in the context of technology, reflecting the varying trevails of late capitalism. AUTOBAHN strive towards some kind of articulation of that conflict. The music is unrelentingly taut and terse, and the vocals of frontman Craig Johnson are invariably intense, though lyrically there are repeated allusions to beauty, empowerment and, ostensibly, hope. As such, the title of the album is an instructive one - there’s some kind of bliss in all this mess. AUTOBAHN don’t so much push against the pain as ride it out to its (il)logical ends. As Johnson implores on the title track, “focus on living, the pain wont be forgotten”. It’s a relatable sentiment.

Teeth Machine are a rare band knitted together through close camaraderie: a collective in the truest sense of the word, whose intricate, improvisational style resolutely resists being reduced to one single contributor. Teeth Machine found its beginnings in the close friendship and musical collaborations of Arthur Bently (saxophonist/lead guitarist) and Gray Rimmer (lead vocals/guitar). Having played together in various other projects since the age of 17 and disaffected with the music industry, the pair’s first furtive experimentations with the music that would later become Teeth Machine took place at a deliberate distance from the Outside world. This early incubation period, and the music made through endless bedroom sessions and demos recorded on laptops and tapes, became the spine of the project, fostering a sound that still retains both a precious intimacy and a large, expansive sonic scope. The band’s lineup as it stands today features long term friends and collaborators Anthony Boatright (Bass), Jamie Staples (Drums), and Ciara Reddy (Vocals/Synth). On their first self-assured, recorded offering to the wider world, Teeth Machine still bear the imprint of their origins, the band’s sound firmly grounded in the ethos of mutually weighted contribution, as well as the closeness cultivated in their early experiences, always retaining an air of uninhibited creativity and adolescent intimacy. ‘Gumball’, their first release on RaRaRok (Wulu, The Goa Express) was self-produced, mixed by Dilip Harris (King Krule, Mount Kimbie). It’s a song that conveys the tension and impossibility of communication and language, even when attempting to connect with those closest to us. Despite this, and however much the track itself bristles with an unmistakable air of friction, the listener gets the strong sense that there has not been a love lost, but rather one renegotiated, even expanded.

5056614700657

Some people have commented that Tinariwen have always been a country band, albeit a North African take on that most North American of genres That idea is magnified on new album Amatssou, which finds the Tuareg band’s trademark snaking guitar lines and hypnotic rhythms blending seamlessly with pedal steel, piano and strings from guest musicians including Daniel Lanois, the embellished arrangements lending the songs an epic, universal application

Full of poetic allegory, the lyrics call for unity and freedom There are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. “Dear brothers all rest, all leisure will always be far from reach unless your homeland is liberated and all the elders can live there in dignity,” Ibrahim Ag Alhabib sings on ‘Arajghiyine ’ The album’s title Amatssou is Tamashek for ‘Beyond The Fear ’ and it fits - Tinariwen have always been characterised by their fearlessness - and as Bob Dylan once said, the power of rock’n’roll is that it makes us “oblivious to the fear” as the music gives us the strength and resilience to confront adversity

In the two decades since Tinariwen emerged from their base in the African desert to tour the globe, they have got to know many renowned country, folk, and rock musicians from the USA including Kurt Vile, Stephen O'Malley, Jack White, and Wilco Tuareg nomads and cowboy drifters Camel trains and mustang horses The timeless horizon of the endless Sahara and the wild frontier of the Old West - several thousand miles of ocean may divide the desert blues of Tinariwen and the authentic country music of rural America but the links are as palpable as they are romantic

CALIFONE villagers

• RETAIL ONLY PRESSING ON COKE BOTTLE CLEAR VINYL

“Blending pillow-soft pop, existential dread, layered drone folk, and inexhaustible rays of hope into a prismatic burst more focused than anything in their catalog.”

The end of the world may not come in a big, unavoidable sign, furious light and impenetrable noise. The end of things might just be slow, mystic, blanketing, entropy steadily fraying everything out at the edges. Instead of a grand explosion, you, me, a flower, a dog, a musty old house, a thread-bare cassette—all revealed as composed of the same particles drifting apart and commingling. The latest from Califone, villagers, feels like sitting on the porch swing and looking out at that entropic sunset.

“It’s my job to make people happy in a very sad way,” Tim Rutili wryly muses. With 25 years of Califone in his catalog (not to mention a variety of other projects, including alt rock heroes Red Red Meat), the Chicago-born, Los Angeles-based artist knows well how to find that moment of awe and bliss even when things are falling apart.

And now for the group’s first record since 2020’s Echo Mine, he dials into that sweet spot with an immaculate cast of collaborators spread across recording sessions in four different cities. The record’s nine compositions stretch out just as far, incorporating elements of classic radio pop and electronic experimentation into the mix. And then there are tracks like the chilled and rippling “Eyelash”, built out of the bones of an improvised drone, field recordings of rain run through a modular synth, and a tight rhythm section. “I wanted to make it feel like Voodoo-era D’Angelo meets The Long Goodbye-era Robert Altman,” Rutili recalls of the track, as much sculpture as song.

"It just feels comfortable to take elements of Captain Beefheart, soft rock from the '70s, and brittle digital elements," Rutili says. “There are words that shouldn't go together and images that are smashed together that maybe shouldn't be, but it just feels right.” Throughout Villagers, the moments of eerie distortion or surprise come as quickly to the fore as they disappear behind themselves, masterful brushstrokes cast in mercuric music. Even as the world stretches into stranger and stranger shapes, Califone continues to reach newfound heights of harmony and unity beyond their already mythic chemistry. Villagers songs are full of people coming to terms with the gaps between perception and reality, with the very concept of reality, with time slinking constantly towards an unseen cliff—an album where even songs of devotion focus on loving the other’s imperfections and broken hearts. “Un-careful footsteps/ At the first blush of a hurricane/ All the cocaine happy endings/ My love remains,” Rutili hushes, the quintessential, surreal acoustic pop ballad stretching off into the sunset, omens and all.

Califone’s debut album 'Roomsound' - Originally self released in April of 2001. 'Roomsound' covers the same rustic, slightly ramshackle back forty that Tim Rutili has been ploughing through since his previous band Red Red Meat. Only this time the tilled bedrock unveils the most vividly colored, luring crop of songs Rutili has ever harvested. The sleepy, country-blues picking and autumnal backwoods melodies are accented with striking splashes of electronic tone color, obsolete keyboards and off-kilter percussion. Masterfully produced by Brian Deck, the album is vaulted far beyond the sum of its parts.

Description / Bio:

End of Everything is the intrepid seventh album from Mega Bog, a nightmarish experimental pop ensemble led by Erin Elizabeth Birgy. In 2020, Birgy was surrounded by seemingly endless turmoil: mass death, a burning planet, and a personal reckoning when past traumas met fresh ones. Living in Los Angeles, against the backdrop of brilliantly horrifying forest fires, she questioned what perspective to use moving forward in such dumbfounded awe. Deciding to seize something tangible, she produced a record that spoke of surrender, of mourning, and support in the face of tumultuous self-reflection.

Writing on piano and synthesizer, instead of the familiar guitar, Birgy explored a spectrum of new sounds to illuminate a state of volatility and flux that was both universal and personal. Speaking of this transition, she describes the need “to feel... instantly. I didn’t want to dig into secret codes. I no longer wanted to hide behind difficult music. I was curious to give others the same with the music I create; to make music someone could use to explore drama, playfulness, and dancing, to shake the trauma loose.” Heavy grooves, metal guitar squeals, Italo disco bass lines, rhapsodic synth layers, and huge choruses stomp around the delightfully sanguine pop drama. Where previous records stretched out into the abstract and ethereal, End of Everything delivers a hit straight to collective awareness and healing.

A seemingly disparate jukebox of sounds – ranging from Thin Lizzy, Bronski Beat, Franco Battiato and Ozzy Osbourne to 90’s house classics like Haddaway’s ‘What is Love’ and Corona’s ‘Rhythm of the Night’ - foregrounded a new punchy theatricality in Birgy’s music. The songs she was creating at home followed suit with bolder hooks and more dancefloor energy than she’d ever dared before. Thrilling melodies grow to ascend throughout the length of a song, clutching your hand and whispering in your ear one minute before screaming off a cliff edge the next. The soft and the guttural nuzzle and crash of heads, where every moment holds the multitudes of all possible dimensions stirring each other through the veil.

Selling Points

• Press Quotes:

• “Erin Birgy’s delightfully freaky sixth album is dense but full of whimsy and romance, pulling in strains of folk, jazz, and chamber pop to marvel at all the odd little wonders of the world.” - Pitchfork

• “a beautiful, bewildering fantasy” - The Guardian

• “By this point, the most we can hope for with originality in songwriting is old forms twisted into previously unseen shapes, or so many different ideas crammed into one that we lose sight of the sources. Erin Birgy is clearly unaware of such limitations.” - Line of Best Fit

• Tour: US Tour June + July 2023, UK / EU headline tour and key festival dates Aug + Sept 2023; supported Cate Le Bon on US / UK / EU tours in 2022

• Notable Contributors: James Krivchenia (Big Thief), Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Westerman, and Jackson Macintosh (Sheer Agony, Drugdealer, TOPS)

• Music Videos / Book: Four official music videos, plus an accompanying book of poetry by Erin Birgy entitled The Practice of Hell Ending

• Press / Radio: Press and radio teams hired in US, UK, and France

AKOUSMATIKOUS

SALAMI ROSE JOE LOUIS

Release Date: May 19th, 2023

Salami Rose Joe Louis returns to Brainfeeder with the new album, Akousmatikous, available on LP and CD.

Bay Area singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Lindsay Olsen is the brilliant mind behind the warped and magical project Salami Rose Joe Louis. Drawing from her studies in planetary sciences, she creates a unique experience: exploring ideas of multiverses and climate change through the lens of a fictional post-apocalyptic keyboard-toting earthling with a flashlight, a can of cashews and a hopeful optimism. Melding influences from jazz, rock and hip-hop – Shuggie Otis, Captain Beefheart, Stereolab, and R. Stevie Moore – she creates a unique blend of experimental galaxy sounds with jazz influenced vocals and keys.

Her new album “Akousmatikous” features collaborations with Brijean (Ghostly International) and Soccer96 (a project from The Comet is Coming’s Danalogue and Betamax). It will be released on 19th May 2023 with SRJL’s headline North American tour kicking off the day after album release incorporating ten shows including Elsewhere NYC and Zebulon LA. Summer 2023 festival appearances include Green Man and Womad (UK).

The new album follows recent collaborations with Toro y Moi, Alice Phoebe Lou on her Strongboi project, a remix for Brainfeeder labelmates Hiatus Kaiyote, and writing credits on ‘Scapegoat’ from GRAMMY-winning rapper Baby Keem's acclaimed debut album. Lindsay has also had the honor of touring with Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra, Toro y Moi, TuneYards, Clairo, MNDSGN, Homeshake, The Comet is Coming and Still Woozy.

Towering figures of New York’s Downtown scene, Zorn and Laswell have been working together since the late 1970s. Following up on their acclaimed 2022 duo project The Cleansing, this new volume presents musical memorials to three artistic visionaries whose powerful legacies remain touchstones of creativity and artistic integrity. Here the music takes on more of an ambient edge, and is distinguished by telepathic improvisational interplay and a unique virtuosity. Three heartfelt tributes from one generation of mavericks to another, Memoria is a beautiful collection of modern improvisation at its best.

More than 50 years into his songwriting career, Music Man is Layng Martine Jr.’s remarkable debut album—a Christmas gift from his son, Tucker Martine, whose work with Neko Case, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, and My Morning Jacket led Paste Magazine to name him one of the ten best producers of the decade.

Layng and Tucker, joined by a cast of musicians that includes Peter Buck, kd lang, Bill Frisell, and Laura Veirs, crafted an album with a timeless sound, filled with all the warmth, heart, humor, and hooks that made Layng’s songs hits for generations of Nashville stars.

Released in collaboration with Kill Rock Stars Nashville, Music Man is the first album from the newly relaunched Bloodshot Records, and a sign of great things to come from the resurgent home of insurgent country.

The first album from the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer who wrote Reba McIntire’s first hit and Elvis Presley’s last.

Produced by Layng’s son, Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Neko Case, The Decemberists)

Featured musicians include Peter Buck, kd lang, Bill Frisell, and Laura Veirs

COMPANY RECORDS / MAY 19, 2023 MATTSON 2 PARADISE

When things are right, they’re right; it’s rare that everything falls into place. It’s rarer still to capture that feeling on wax, which is what The Mattson 2 have achieved with their latest album, Paradise. It’s their second release on Chaz Bear’s (fka Chaz Bundick, aka Toro y Moi) Company Records, and first without Bear as a member of the band. The identical twins, Jared (guitars) and Jonathan (drums), have left their trademark virtuosity on display; within the 32-minute runtime they’ve managed to capture the arc of an entire relationship between two people. You can tell from how warm the guitars sound — we go from emotional equilibrium to longing to happiness to loss. “For years and years you’ve been on my mind,” they sing, and mean it. When the Mattsons sing the line “you’re so special, you’re so easy” it’s easy to forget they’re not talking to you.

Even so, it’s a record to throw a frisbee to — it’s a sylphlike, sylvan thing, meant to be used and enjoyed. “We don’t want people to think too hard,” they say. “We want to let people in!”

That’s perhaps because it’s the first album they’ve written and recorded in their home, which is a wooden cabin in the hills of San Diego. You can hear the sun in the keyboards, in the 80s-inflected jazz. The singing is new, too. What it adds up to is a bigger, bolder sound than their previous work; the brothers say they went into it trying out a conceptually new, cohesive sound — a new sonic palette to create from. It’s a little bit of summer you can savor all year long.

They’ve been playing shows for 15 years without any vocals; on Paradise, though, the twins have added their voices to the mix, which adds a welcome new human dimension to the record. “No matter how much someone loved the instrumental set they’d ask if we sang!” Jared said. Even so, the lyrics are meant to be abstract, to conjure a mood. If you listen closely you’ll be able to discern what the Mattson brothers are feeling. There’s longing, in songs that are about getting what you want and realizing it’s not actually the right thing; there’s lyrics about not being free, in both the capitalist system and in the creative one. There’s a song about a loved one dying from an overdose. There are deep themes here, even if the subjects are treated lightly.

On “Naima’s Dream,” which opens the album, the Mattsons lock into a buoyant melody; it sounds like the feeling of lying in a park on a carefree, sunny day, watching the dogs chase the people throwing frisbees in the distance. That feeling carries through the rest of the album, too; on “Essence,” which describes a relationship in progress. “You’re so special, you’re so easy,” the Mattsons sing over a lush guitar arrangement propelled by a truly grooving bass line.

The range of human experience is vast, and the Mattsons have managed to capture a piece of it in stunning detail. Being alive demands every kind of adjective: difficult, boring, fun, sustaining, affirming, renewing, reviving, strenuous, punishing, arbitrary, unfeeling, inconvenient, and everything in between. The slice that the Mattsons describe in this album is uniformly sweet, but inflected with the knowledge of how quickly things can change, and how, most of the time, it’s hard to recognize that they’re changing until the metamorphosis is already complete.

FOYER RED YARN THE HOURS AWAY

Foyer Red makes sweet yet abrasive songs that careen into delightfully unexpected places. The group’s potent art rock embodies a spirit of collaborative exploration, as a seemingly endless supply of ideas accrue and collide as part of a spirited musical conversation between the band’s members, a sensation that is heightened by the often literal conversation occurring between their three principle vocalists. It’s a formula that blends masterful left-field pop songwriting with absolute chaos, and on their debut LP Yarn the Hours Away (out May 2023 via Carpark), the result is a collection of surrealist indie rock that is a testament to Foyer Red’s unshakable bond and obvious chemistry.

The band started as a trio with singer and clarinetist Elana Riordan, drummer Marco Ocampo, and singer/guitarist Mitch Myers. The three would email each other song ideas and record the ones that stuck. In 2021, they released their debut EP Zigzag Wombat, which drew comparisons to Suburban Lawns from Pitchfork, who described it as “fuck-you crayon rock.”

Despite the success of the EP, Foyer Red reinvented itself as a five-piece, adding singer and guitarist Kristina Moore and bassist Eric Jaso, who took an equal part in their egalitarian songwriting method. It’s an approach that creates a giddy atmosphere across Foyer Red’s debut, with the band’s members constantly caught up in the thrill of discovery as they explore the musical environments they are creating. While the album displays a diversity of themes, the sense of navigating unknown territory is often mirrored in the lyrical content of the songs, which are structured as conversations, with Riordan, Myers and Moore portraying different characters. In practice this can be wildly imaginative — as on “Wetland Walk” where Myers plays a character exploring a swamp, Moore a swamp monster and Riordan the swamp itself — but also emotionally resonant in unusual ways — as on “Etc” which depicts a fractured interaction between Riordan and Myers who are portraying a couple in a dysfunctional relationship, with Riordan asking existential questions of Myers who uses stilted language as he attempts to calculate the ideal parking space in a Lowe’s parking lot. It’s a daring experiment in songwriting and one that pays off in part because of the member’s willingness to follow each other down the strangest of avenues.

Recorded with producer Jonathan Schenke (Dougie Poole, Parquet Courts) at Figure8 Studios in Brooklyn, Yarn The Hours Away, is a striking next step for Foyer Red that makes good on the promise of their heralded debut EP. It’s an ambitious album that reflects the rigorous process of its creation, but one that manages to capture the excitement of a band finding out just how far their wildest impulses can take them.

DAN DEACON SPIDERMAN OF THE RINGS

Standing in a Greyhound Bus station, wearing a Sylvester t-shirt and huge duct-tape-covered glasses, Baltimore ’s Dan Deacon doesn’t invoke the image of a composer to the other bus riders. The two suitcases he loads under the bus, which accompany him from city to city, hold the sweatand-grime-soaked electronics that he uses to craft his raging, maxed-out party music and light show. After 12 tours and 300+ shows in little over 2 years, the gear is beaten and battered, but the show and the energy it produces is anything but.

Dan Deacon has garnered a reputation in the underground as an intense performer and classic showman. The table top full of pedals, a sine wave generator, vocoder and casio blasting through the PA, joined by a makeshift light board with various bulbs and green skull strobe light, make his all out dance-til-you-drop performance a complete experience.

But it isn’t all fancy feet and bouncy beats. Deacon is a classically trained composer with a Masters degree in electro-acoustic composition. He has released 7 albums from 2003 to 2006, but those self-produced recordings do not contain the vocal-based experimental pop that he has fine-tuned in live performance. His latest full length, Spiderman of the Rings is the first album bridging the gap between party performer and genuine composer. A mixture of his live show dance anthems, intricate instrumentals and humorous monologues, Spiderman of the Rings establishes Dan Deacon as a new type of entertainer in the contemporary underground.

“Tapping directly into the great lineage of batshit bubblegum pop, Baltimore art kid Dan Deacon’s Spiderman of the Rings is one of this year’s happiest, catchiest, and weirdest records, repeatedly hitting pleasure centers with track after track of gleeful, electronics-infused hyperpop and candy-coated sound experiments. Plus, you can mosh to it.”

Matt Espy Hawksworth

DC868

Street Date: May 19, 2023

Matt Espy is an American drummer and percussionist. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he spent his youth playing every genre of music he could find, playing out in clubs starting at age 14 and launching his touring career at 18. He moved to Chicago in 1996 and continued his journey playing rock, avant-garde, jazz, and performance art pieces. He’s played drums for a number of groups and charismatic individuals, including Atombombpocketknife , Duke Special and The Mountain Goats. Over the past decade, he’s found his home with Dead Rider, also on Drag City.

Hawksworth is Matt’s first solo adventure. In the field of solo drumming albums, it’s an avian psychedelic percussion trip all of its own. A dialogue between birds, electronics, and drums, Hawksworth operates along precise degrees in the vastness that exists between the diverse poles of Terry Riley and Martin Denny

It captures one particularly memorable morning walk from long ago, a time immemorial in Matt ’s life. In this new musical rendering, that fateful morning is ridden with wormholes throughout the piece, like hyperspace links that travel

to motifs from his 30-plus years music career with every step along the way.

The inspiration for the album came to Matt all at once a couple years back. It was early pandemic times, and the world outside his home felt drained of people, which brought the sounds of the world without people to his attention. It took awhile for the impact of that to settle in. One day while, naturally, listening to music, he heard a pop song employing the barking of a dog as percussion, and sat up with a start. Was it real, or? Like a bolt from the blue, the sonic and the visual design for Hawksworth came whole cloth, completely evident to him in that moment. It was done, and all it needed now was to be executed.

Birdsong as a transformative element had first affected Matt during this almost-mythic teenage perambulation of his. It was an early a.m., post hallucinogenic, walk of shame; a night of wonder, followed by the cold light of dawning. As he made his way back home, the wonder began to kick and flicker again, and the sounds of the birds in the trees above caused the possibilities of the world to open up wide. Now, all these years later, he thought about recharting that path

through lostness and inspiration, to once again find the places where nature and HIS nature the drums became one.

Matt started with the birds, locating a variety of hi-definition free source samples of their song. He chopped and scattered them into a new state of nature, collapsing the hemispheres and the regions within, to allow the birds of all nations the freedom to flock together. Once the editing work was done, drumming to this sound was almost simple compared to that process. He brought forward some licks perennials and other things worked up over time that had or hadn’t found a place with the different bands he’d been in with room allowed for improvisation. And for Matt , drums were the only way to fly.

Working at the studio of Dead Rider frontman Todd Rittmann , Matt found or was it that he refound ? his happy place. Hawksworth comments upon a life in music as a space where the firmament is ever vaulting above our head, and Matt uses the world we too often take for granted the one we live in as a means to get back to the sky.

SPIRITUAL JAZZ FROM SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S BRIGHTEST STARS

OVERVIEW:

New Zealand’s jazz luminaries have assembled to form an allstar cluster: The Circling Sun.

Channeling spiritual/modal jazz and Latin rhythms, they simultaneously reference the greats such as Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane, while maintaining a fresh perspective on ensemble dynamics.

Perhaps the group’s name is no coincidence - each instrument seems to be in orbit around the concept of symbiotic synergy - and everyone is given equal space to shine; from a psychedelic Korg, to a delirious saxophone or the gentle ripples of a harp. There’s a huge array of keyboards, skillfully manned by the likes of Guy Harrison and Cory Champion (Clear Path Ensemble), with a standout acoustic piano solo by Harrison on “Plume”.

Not to be outshone, the wind section delivers ecstatic saxophone riffs , fluttering flutes and solid horn choruses throughout. Meanwhile, providing vital foundational support are the percussion (Soundway alumnus Julien Dyne), vibraphone, acoustic bass and full choir arranged by Matt Hunter.

It’s a testament to their harmonious relationship and skill that this debut album instantly sounds like a classic from a group that might have been together a decade.

MF TOMLINSON

WE ARE STILL WILD HORSES

STREET DATE: 19 May 2023

LABEL: PRAH Recordings

"There are shades of Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt to Tomlinson’s lyrical mix of playfulness and gloom, reveals Tomlinson as a rare thing today: a talented, depressive singer-songwriter with a sense of humour."

Times

"Tomlinson's second album only comprises four tracks, but contains multitudes, offering variations on chamber rock with a solemn grandeur that simmers with tension..."

"Brisbane native re-emerges post-pandemic as a literate, sensitive crooner of lugubrious yet meticulously arranged songs"

London-based, Brisbane/Meanjin-born singer-songwriter MF Tomlinson returns with a new project We Are Still Wild Horses, released 14th April 2023 via PRAH Recordings (the Umlauts, Pozi, Donna Thompson)

Where MF Tomlinson's debut full length Strange Time documented a world in turmoil, with Tomlinson feeling cautiously optimistic about what was to come, his EP We Are Still Wild Horses finds him lost in isolation, embarking on a journey into the self in search of hope and catharsis.

The carefully plucked notes that introduce “Wi nter Time Blues” are the songwriter’s first tentative steps into his psyche. Like a Leonard Cohen or Richard Thompson completely shorn of hope, Tomlinson describes his daily drudgery, his voice audibly sagging at his powerlessness to carry the weight of the world’s issues. Spooky synth swells, tense strings and twirling brass leer up out of the shadows like psychedelic spectres welcoming him into the grotto of his unconscious - as he sinks into a depression caused by the cold and lack of light - "After all, for Christ's sake I'm an Australian".

Uniting the symphonic complexity and lyrical acumen of Lee Hazlewood, the freedom and sonic exploration of Tortoise and Yo La Tengo & the high concept edge of David Byrne, the album draws on a swathe of psych influences - from his contemporary heroes Cate Le Bon and Weyes Blood, to acid folk legends Trees & the Canterbury folk scene ( Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers) and the equivalent movement in Japan (Haruomi Hosono) - all welded together, forming arrangements that blend progressive rock and jazz á la King Crimson, making the eventual leap towards modern composition and ambient music in the vein of Brian Eno and Phillip Glass.

Mysterious Belgian experimental electronics duo Suumhow returns with their third album, Years Failed Successfully. The album opens with the duo's signature melodicism and broken glitched-up beatwork. It then ebbs into more sinewy territory with swaths of pulsing static and overarching widescreen vivid ambiance. It's new ground for the duo that displays some rather aurally fitting symbolism to the state of the pandemic era, with ambient music on the edge of hysterical hope and arrested emotions. It's a gripping album that displays fine detail in its coarseness and somehow relief in its muted melodicism. When things seem like they might be getting too ominous, the duo boomerangs the listener back to their harmonious and glitched-up world as a means of much needed escapism.

Cindy – Cindy (Re-issue)

Tough

Black vinyl LP re-issue. Edition of 500. Cindy don't do many things loudly, but their seemingly sudden emergence a few years back was quite the jolt, their Free Advice LP doing for the current San Fran scene what the Big Supermarket record did for Melbourne a year or two back - ie a totemic outta-nowhere DIY statement of rare vision. As it turns out, though, it's not quite without precedent, since there was actually a self-released debut record from 2018, first pressed in tiny number and initially not moving much further than their immediate locale. A few years on and now trading for inflated prices on the second hand market, Tough Love are re -issuing in order to shine a little light on the band's first steps. These ten tracks display the ruminative formation of the minimal indiepop sound perfected on Free Advice, skeletons of the same ideas with a little less flesh on dem bones, nonetheless struck with a naive wonder, like you're afforded the opportunity to hear the band stumbling upon their own charms in real time. And that is 100% the appropriate word here - charm, a quality perfectly captured in that front cover, too. It's not possible to overstate how endearing this music is, so independent is it of outside influence and free of selfconsciousness. Is this the birth of the new Paisley Underground? Or maybe something better...

Moonwalks - Western Mystery Tradition

‘Western Mystery Tradition’ is the third studio album from Detroit, MI via Brooklyn, NY outfit Moonwalks. A departure from the band’s DIY psych-rock roots to a more mature and polished sound, the album was produced by Mattiel ’s Jonah Swilley and recorded in May 2019 at Detroit’s acclaimed (and rumored haunted) Masonic Temple with Bill Skibbe (Jack White, The Kills) in a lodge belonging to the Free Masons ’ Detroit chapter.

“Western Mystery Tradition was conceived in the winter of 2019 amidst a polar vortex in Detroit, Michigan ”, Moonwalks recall of the record’s origins: “At the time and in between touring, we lived together in a house on the west side that lacked a working stove and had no power in half of the building. The band - trapped indoors due to temperatures in the negatives and massive amounts of snow - drew inspiration from our isolated state amidst a bleak Michigan winter.”

Moonwalks consists of Kerrigan Pearce (drums), Jacob Dean (guitar), and Kate Gutwald (bass). Originating in Detroit's DIY scene, the trio started out playing in warehouses and makeshift venues across the city. Since then, they ’ve gone on to tour extensively throughout North America and Europe supporting acts like The Murlocs, Metric, Julian Casablancas & The Voidz, Thee Oh Sees, The Liminanas, and The Mystery Lights to name a few.
