ith Best Troubador, Bonnie ‘Prince Billy pays homage to a long-time and forever hero, the late Merle Haggard. A singer who, some 25 years previously, first performed in public by playing a Merle Haggard song, Bonny has often cited Merle’s work in performance, on records and in conversation with anyone who was around, even talking to Merle himself for Filter magazine in 2009. Merle’s body of work was considered by Bonny for a record such as this for some time, but his passing in April of 2016 almost put a stop to it. The goal was to participate in the handing forward of the songs of a living legend, as Merle had done so many times in his own career. Writing for Juan and Only in 2012, Bonnie put it this way: “Merle Haggard is a channeler who has paid ample tribute to those that came before him. He has demonstrated explicitly and implicitly his standing on the shoulders of Tommy Duncan/Bob Wills, Jimmie Rodgers, Floyd Tillman,
Lefty Frizzell and many others. There are songs in his catalogue that seep solidly into the headspace of Kentuckians who grew up when I did, and beyond through his vast influence on the George Straits, Dwight Yoakams, Alan Jacksons, John Andersons, Toby Keiths, and too many others. He is not the original, but he may be the most significant junction.” With Merle gone, some of the impetus of the project was in peril. A plan to make the album in Nashville studios was abandoned. The songs still called to be played again, however — and so sessions were endeavored at home, capturing feeling, memory and new expression in familiar confines with the full-hearted playing and singing of the Bonafide United Musicians: Van Campbell, Nuala Kennedy, Danny Kiley, Drew Miller, Cheyenne Mize, and Chris Rodahoffer, with special guests Mary Feiock, Emmett Kelly, A.J. Roach and Matt Sweeney. The songs sung on Best Troubador are pulled from all over — from Haggard’s third album in 1967 though to his 47th in 2011 — but this

is no simple hits compilation. Capable only of occupying a shared space between himself and Merle Haggard, Bonny chose personal favorites, singing the songs he wanted to sing, to find Merle and himself together in the music. Only two of Hag’s thirty-eight (!) country number ones are included, and only two others that charted at all. Seven of the sixteen songs are from his later period, after his long run at the top of the country charts had ended, but before encroaching mortality could finally cease the singular and indefatigable creativity of Merle Haggard. Best Troubador flips through his song book, landing on pages unmoored from their time and located anew. Moving from 1978 to 1969 to 2003 to 1981 allows the album to circle Haggard’s music in a simulation of thought and memory, slipping around from spot to spot as if they were discrete impressions, unknown but knowable yet. Dedicated to new life and old, Best Troubador is wistful and bittersweet and no lament at all, but a tribute instead, for the triumph of a life spent in unending pursuit of the goal: new and expressive music, as our inspirations and heroes once sang it.

FOREST SWORDS “Compassion”
Street Date: 5/5/2017 ZEN243 / ZEN243X / ZENCD243 Forest Swords, aka acclaimed Merseyside-based producer Matthew Barnes, returns with his eagerly anticipated new full-length record. “Compassion", the follow-up to 2013's critically lauded debut “Engravings”, will be released on 5th May 2017 via Ninja Tune. The album will be followed by a set of multidisciplinary projects expanding the themes and concepts across wider disciplines, overseen by Forest Swords’ own Dense Truth, an experimental art studio and record label. “Compassion" is a response to the uncertain, aggressive new world we’re experiencing and communicating within, distilling it into a unique sound territory: Barnes' exploration of the mid-point between ecstasy and melancholy, artificial and human feels timely and affecting; a celebration of primal connections, life itself, and an anxious glance at the direction we're heading. The result is an assured, compelling, vital body of work, tying together the ancient and future: weaving swathes of buzzing digital textures, field recordings, clattering beats and distorted jazz sax with fizzing orchestral arrangements. The album shifts from 'The Highest Flood's skeletal bounce to 'Panic's claustrophobic paranoia; the rapturous hyperballad 'Arms Out' to the windswept and cinematic ‘Knife Edge’, navigating through the orchestral glitch of 'War It' to decaying jazz thump of ‘Raw Language’. The album is equal parts disorienting and immersive, balancing bold sweeping gestures and crumbling textures; tracks seemingly disintegrating and reassembling at points across the album. Blending both digital and specially recorded brass, strings and vocals, Barnes's processing never truly makes it clear what's new or old, sampled or unique, constantly blurring and toying with the line between digital and acoustic. The 'mixed media' approach extends to the record's packaging and design, all directed by Barnes himself. The visuals intersect many of the album’s themes: bodies, connection, language and movement – with the deluxe booklet featuring portraits of first-wave immigrants who travelled from Barnes' home port of Liverpool to New York. Central to this enthralling world is “Compassion", an album that's as weighty as it is vulnerable, sculpting the most striking parts of his previous work into something that feels urgent and necessary, and cementing Barnes as one of the UK's most significant electronic artists and composers.

"The ever-prolific metal marauders in Heiress are back with a new collection of material, to be released in multiple formats over the next several months. Continuing a staggering string of high quality output following 2015's Of Great Sorrow which Metal Sucks claimed was "the kind of record for which the use of the verb “crushing” as an adjective was invented" and 2016's Made Wrong, which New Noise Magazine touted as "the next great post-metal record", the band now offers up Restless Aim. Restless Aim started out as a series of three split seven inches between Heiress and their friends in Earth Control, Great Falls, and GRVR (Griever). Those 7" splits will be released in the near future, but the Heiress portion of the material from those splits is also being released as a CD (containing 15 tracks, including their self-released debut 7" and all their EP & split material from the years spent on Deathwish Inc). And for the digital version of the release we've included all their songs from the split 7" series and added two of the deeper cuts from their recent full lengths; Lashings from Of Great Sorrow (2015) and Skinning from Made Wrong (2016). The material is aptly titled as the band continues to evolve and defy easy genre pinning. The diverse collection exemplifies the bands never ending need to push and pull themselves in as many directions as possible to create something that after all is said and done, could have only come from Heiress. Restless Aim will be released on CD and digitally on April 21, 2017. The three split seven inches will be released shortly after, with the artwork direction and design once again handled by Demian Johnston (Great Falls), who also handmade all the covers and obi-stips."

The iconic Penguin Cafe join the Erased Tapes family and open a brand new chapter to their unique world with new album The Imperfect Sea – out on Erased Tapes 5th May 2017. A penguin stands in the middle of a scorching desert, far away from its natural habitat. This mirrors composer Arthur Jeffes’ journey and exploration into a new musical territory. Penguin Cafe have evolved into something of their own at the hands of Arthur who started the band in 2009 with the continuation and homage to his father’s legacy, to the late Simon Jeffes’ Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Now, their upcoming album echoes reminiscent sounds that embrace the new. The album title refers to a saying by his father that “we wade in a sea of imperfections…”, reflecting upon the idea that beauty can be found amongst the chaos. “If there is a narrative to the album it’s coming to the acceptance of the imperfections in all aspects of life; moreover, the recognition that these imperfections and tiny randomnesses are in fact what make up the best parts”, Arthur explains. This has also been highlighted by the striking cover artwork designed by FELD under the art direction of label founder Robert Raths, resembling a lone figure adapting to and accepting its surrounding environment. Predominantly self-composed, the new album also features covers of electronic works by Simian Mobile Disco and Kraftwerk, along with a re-working of Simon's 'Now Nothing'. Arthur has developed from the traditional folk and jazz heritage Penguin Cafe Orchestra is known for into another realm of blissful ambience and dance music, recreated using strictly acoustic elements. “For this album I wanted to effect a departure from where we’d been up to now. The idea was to create a musical world that would feel familiar to an audience more used to dance records but stay true to our own values. Big Walnuts Yonder is bassist/vocalist Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges), guitarist Nels Cline (Wilco, Nels Cline Singers), drummer Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) and guitarist/vocalist Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos). It is not a supergroup. “It’s worlds colliding,” says Mike Watt. Four exceptional musicians whose work spans multiple genres and generations, Big Walnuts Yonder is a monumental endeavor that’s more than the sum of its parts. The results are a truly epic album defying categorization, where one might hear elements of proto-punk, free jazz, power pop, experimental music, psych-rock and your first teenage acid trip all in one. The impetus for Big Walnuts Yonder came about way back in 2008 from a conversation between Watt and Reinhart while their bands toured together in Japan. The two discussed recording together and who they might bring in to the sessions. “Nick gets ahold of my first opera,” Watt explains. “Made in 1997 with Nels Cline. He said ‘what’s it like playing with Nels?’” “So Watt says, ‘if you want to know the man, play with the man,’” Cline elaborates. Cline agreed to join if Reinhart picked the drummer. Reinhart quickly mentioned Saunier, unaware that Cline had previously brought Watt to see him perform at a Deerhoof show years before. The lineup solidified in its mutual appreciation and they began making plans to write and record - while circumnavigating the schedules of 4 extremely busy musicians. “We had planned it for so long,” Saunier says. “Then several years passed in which nothing occurred due to everyone’s schedules. It was 2-3 years of warm, leisurely prep time, then suddenly made in a panic with time and money on the line.”

The album was recorded in just 3 days in summer 2014 in Brooklyn, NY with producer and former Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone engineering at his Studio G. “It was this concentrated sort of freakout,” Saunier says. “We basically had to invent a new band on the spot. And, people might have a stereotype of what each person does, but we all showed up to do what we’re prevented from doing in other groups.” The album’s 10 tracks were recorded primarily live with very few overdubs. Although Big Walnuts Yonder was created under somewhat spontaneous circumstances, the group endeavored to ensure the album wouldn’t sound like a jam session. “It was very clear among us,” Saunier notes: “Let’s not overindulge and make it a ‘musician’s recording’.” Asked how he might describe Big Walnuts Yonder, Cline succinctly nails it on the head: “It’s sick. It has an extreme quality and kicks ass.”

Chickens were puzzling to early chemists and remain so. Despite a diet low in calcium, eggs laid by chickens contain a huge amount of calcium. Chickens, in that sense, are the only alchemists with proof that they are able to transmute an element; Wooden Wand’s Clipper Ship album reminds me of that fowl alchemy, where the sum of songs’ parts add up to some impossible, elegant germination that cannot be reduced. Drones and lush arpeggiated codas spin out in concentric fractal patterns; the finger picking of Kentucky’s own Nathan Salsburg on “Sacrifical” layers and weaves like harmonocist Hans Kayser described the octaval correspondences between the shapes of plants and musical notes. The hopeful acoustic line ascends, and repeats; the words reference modern master Trinie Dalton’s short story Scarlet Gilia, calling forth its volcanoes, bare feet, blood and love. The three part “Mallow T’ward the River” begins like a civil war ballad, then segues into a funky bass breakdown, and ends with Glenn Kotche’s sparse percussion that at turns sounds like a jump rope slapping the ground or a brush made of a thicket of grass: maybe mallow grass. It is surprising, hypnotic and stubborn. On this record a certain restless swagger or arrogance I have always loved in James Toth’s songwriting is changed; there is something introverted and peaceful. In “One Can Only Love,” a Yardbirds’ “White Summer”-style raga meets Toth’s Yaweh- John Donne-Don Juan lyrics; the narrator here is godlike, but humble, can learn, is loving. ‘You taught me to find peace / where there is no grace.’ Old Testament Toth is becoming New Testament Toth. On Clipper Ship, the images, though they seem like they’ve always been there, still shock: like finding a cave in the woods behind your house. Phrases like: ‘the sun’s not going down/the sun’s just being shy/the clouds look heavy/like they’re duct taped to the sky’ have an erstwhile American dignity, like John O’Hara could have written them. They are not just words the songs are serving, however; neither one would resonate accurately without the other. Toth is hard to pin down as a vocalist; his voice is a compelling mix of channels: the intimacy of Pearls Before Swine, the cajoling of Judy Roderick, and the sly, gentle tone of Kevin Ayers. He and Ayers share that quality of more than one voice moving through their throats, like the wind touching a series of chimes in one breath. In “Mexican Coke,” the narrator states, ‘You ask me why I carry cash around with me all the time,’ a dirty, old tech-- like he is answering a certain kind of modern listener: why the carefully considered words, why the dirty old tech of folk song and guitar chords? He doesn’t reference privacy, or fondness for a ‘simpler’ time. In “Mexican Coke” the value of the old object is relative to the currency that pays for the things of its time. Resale value is not nostalgia; the worth of the old thing is relative to the new thing it can bring. Like the forked stick of a dowser, acoustic guitar and gentle arrangements find those thoughts and hums that can only be caught by arcane tools, songs that breathe with the previous songs and breaths that built them, the format a cradle for the gifts of the collector. That just might be worth a cool grand to the right ears. James Toth is an obsessive, of words and melody, of records and books, and if he trawls through enough dusty silverfish riddles, old tunes, rusted twists of iron, a rare thing is found and transmuted into something new. Hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, THE STEEL WHEELS are familiar with the traditions of folk music and how a string band is supposed to sound. In fact, they’ve been drawing on those steadfast traditions for more than a decade. Yet, their name also evokes a sense of forward motion, which is clearly reflected in their latest album, Wild As We Came Here. The Steel Wheels recorded their album in rural Maine, where producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter) owns a recording studio inside a renovated farmhouse from the 18th century. All four band members – Trent Wagler (guitar, banjo), Eric Brubaker (fiddle), Brian Dickel (upright bass) and Jay Lapp (mandolin) – hunkered down for a week and a half to create Wild As We Came Here. The band’s name is a tip of the hat to steam-powered trains, industrial progress and the buggies of their Mennonite lineage. Their musical style weaves through Americana and bluegrass, folk and old-time music, and the acoustic poetry of the finest singer-songwriters. ● Over the 30 years of Oxbow’s operations, no one has come comfortably close to classifying the Bay Area group. This could arguably be the result of Oxbow’s ongoing evolution, but accurately describing any particular phase of the groups’ seven-album career is no easier than describing the broader metamorphic arc of their creative path. This is especially true with their seventh album Thin Black Duke, where Oxbow’s elusive brand of harmonic unrest has absorbed the ornate and ostentatious palate of baroque pop into their sound, pushing their polarized dynamics into a scope that spans between sublime and completely unnerving. This is new musical territory for all parties involved. As throughout their history, Oxbow grapples with channeling man’s most primal urges through a framework of meticulous, cultured, and cerebral instrumentation. But the unadulterated electric roar and percussive barbarism of their past work wasn’t as wholly satisfactory as it had been in the past. Other flavors were deemed necessary and called into play, both to slake unnamed thirsts and to suitably fit the Thin Black Duke’s lyrical themes, but also to explore the further reaches of Oxbow’s studied approach to tension and release, structure and dissonance, and melody and abstraction. “Certainly we all became increasingly aware that none of us are getting younger,” says guitarist Niko Wenner. Recognizing one’s own mortality can render one’s art to the ranks of ephemera, but Oxbow lashed out at such notions. “For this record I wanted to go even further in the way we always make recordings, as music that hangs together over an entire album, 'large scale coherence' if you will,” Wenner says of his compositional strategy. “I was inspired by pieces like Bach's Goldberg Variations and the formal technique in classical music where a small idea, a kernel, is reiterated, morphed, expanded and truncated, to make a piece of music permeated with the potent perfume of that small element.” Consequently, the attentive ear will notice recurring musical phrases and motifs throughout Thin Black Duke. Noticing such details isn’t necessary to absorb and appreciate the album, but as Wenner suggests, “I think I'm not the only one that finds a visceral satisfaction when you can look into something you like deeper, and deeper, and find more and more there.”

After his set he invited a member of the audience to come onstage and play. I got up and the response was amazing.” Frahm’s manager subsequently took him under his wing and went on to introduce him to Kowloon Records. Since relocating to Berlin, he has found himself embracing the idea of noise for the first time, “I have in the past been extremely focused on making things perfect in my music, but now I’ve learnt to accept the noise and embrace imperfection.”

About Way back in 1981, two musicians got together to make a record. Mike Collins played guitar and had just bought a Roland CR78 - the first programmable drum machine. Keith O’Connell played Fender Rhodes piano and Prophet 5 synthesizer. About Recorded during the summer of 1980 and originally released in 1982 on Spotlight Records, ‘PAZ are Back’ was the second (and arguably the finest) album by the London jazz collective, founded by vibraphonist, composer and arranger Dick Crouch. For PAZ, band leader Dick Crouch assembled a group of the finest jazz musicians working in London at the time. Bill MacKay is a musician and a musician’s friend — a genial guitarist/composer/impro-
viser based in Chicago who has energized the experimental folk, rock and avant scenes around town with his polyglot approach to the guitar, combining the folk of Appalachia, the blues and gospel with rock, jazz, western-country and an array of eastern modes. Over the past decade-plus, he has recorded records for Tompkins Square, Whistler, Relay, and ears&ears, both as a solo artist and with his band Darts & Arrows, while performing and collaborating with a number of other artists. Bill’s most recent album was Sunrise, in which he examined the songs of John Hulbert, whose 1972 private-press classic Opus III reflected a uniquely mid-western hybridization of finger style and city blues playing. MacKay’s interest in this tactic — essentially, a personal blending of roots elements — has evidenced itself throughout his discography. On Esker, his third solo work, Bill takes it further with an album of all-original material performed
entirely in consort with himself. Playing all the parts with guitars, glass slide, bass, piano and percussion, he deepens his hybrid-genre approach with both contrast and cohesion, creating warm, melodic narratives that draw on folk, psych and experimental rock modes. Side one themes range from the Moorish air, “Aster,” to early American strains and pure chunks of folk-rock, while side two finds Bill expanding into abstract spaces as he realizes a long-held goal: casting the rolling spirit of the landscape in song. The album’s extended closer, “Scarlet’s Return,” overlaps liquid slide guitars and gently loping rhythm, slowly building a raga-esque fugue state, cinematic in its progression, with primal airs and complex psychology evoked by every new passage. With cover images from fellow Chicago musician and friend Marc Riordan, the cumulative impact of Esker is of peaceful oneness for the active listener. The dynamic singularity with which Bill ties his interests together is the key to his music, an effortless combination of wide-ranging elements that evokes a warm and enveloping view of the world around us. Would but the grace of his slide guitars accompany our final steps into the grave, it would be a life well-spent!

ARTIST PROFILE: Fans often take offense when their favorite artists evolve and too often fail to see the truth behind the evolution. Take Memphis, TN’s Pillow Talk, whose first full-length slips further into the dreamier, blearier sound they established on 2015’s What We Should Have Said and adds to it more synthetic soundscapes. Produced and engineered by Matt Talbott of Hum fame, This Is All Pretend feels like a band who has reconstructed itself, having found something and lost nothing. Thematically, these songs are about letting go to once was and determining how to continue. Singer Joshua Cannon’s lyrics came in fragments over a two-year period that saw his grandmother’s declining health take a toll on his family. Magnified by private battles of self-abuse and a dissociation from everything and everyone around him, his relationships eroded as he looked for a path back to the innocence of childhood. The idea of letting go influenced the band’s musical evolution as well, and is evident on songs like “Sorry In My Mind,” where auto-tuned vocals adorn each verse, slithering alongside the synth lead that seems the weave through the song’s strutting beat. The auto-tune is clearly for effect (Cannon’s soulful alto needs no correcting) and reappears throughout the record, though somehow add more soul to the record. So much of This Is All Pretend feels like a natural progression for Pillow Talk—in fact, the dizzy throb on “Between the Frames” and opener “Monogamy” feel like they could have appeared on What We Should Have Said or even 2014’s Recreational Feelings. Still, it’s clear the band has shed its skin and embraced an evolution that has helped them express their truth— which won’t take long for fans to see, no matter how offended they seem. Moving forward from last year's well received debut EP 'Becoming (N)one' on Glacial Industries, v1984 releases his debut for Knives, the label founded by Jamie Teasdale (Kuedo) and Joe Shakespeare. Jamie says "v1984 was the first artist we approached as a label, in 2014. He's been a core part of Knives as an idea, since before our first record." v1984, real name Christopher Ramos, is of Korean/Filipino descent and the title ‘Pansori’ reflects his Korean heritage. It has the dual translation of a 'gathering place for sound' and it specifically refers to traditional storytelling, which in turn is a neat description of the EP.

The music here is delicate and meticulously laid out. Even when it approaches noise it's detailed and elegant rather than bludgeoning, like the piano and arpeggio that give way to a cold crystalline spray and shimmering drone in the opener 'SPfiNAL TAP reJUVENescence'. The switches in mood from track to track suggest a loose narrative, even with a brief interlude in the shape of 'False Awakenings' that feels as if it's inspired by long forgotten anime soundtracks, constructed from beatless clustered pitch-shifting vocals, bells and airy whooshes. Musically the EP references both the classical music Christopher studied as a child and contemporary electronic music, but it's shattered and smeared into unusual shapes that are, in the more abstract tracks, his musical interpretation of lucid dreaming. Even the club ready tracks have an element of the sublime, such as 'Too Much' which sounds like a synthetic take on the emotional soundtracks of Joe Hisaishi with crafted contemporary hip hop beats woven in, or the damp neon melancholy of 'Aria of Dawn' which colours a mood with a simple gentle glassy melody over tip-tapping drums. The final track 'beauty_IT5INYR-H3D' draws the whole EP together, into a track that contrasts the frenzied and the elegant with crashing, whirling imp-like voices and glassy noise dragged over a tender solo piano melody underpinned by depth charge bass chords. As with every Knives release, visual communication is an integral part of this project. Berlin-based Maren Karlson's illustrative practice is absurd, technically meticulous and walks a fine line between beauty and the corruption of aesthetics. Maren has provided the artwork for 'Pansori', and these traits align perfectly with Christopher's compositions. Christopher says of the EP's imagery: "There was something immediately beautiful, yet maybe a bit unsettling as well, that felt quite tangible to me and resonated within my work. For me, the image depicts some of these moments, between the real and unreal, like lucid dreaming."

SO(U)LEN)SKIN(NER) is the second solo LP Katt Hernandez has released. After 13 years as a veteran of the variated wonderments of the experimental music scenes of the east coast, Katt moved to Sweden. She became a producer at the legendary Fylkingen artspace, started making electro-acoustic music alongside her long beloved violin at EMS and the Royal Music Academy alike, and is playing all about Sweden and further with a burgeoning tumult of new and fantastic musicians. Eight years after her first record Katt’s violin world, full of micro-tonalities, spectral harmonics, invisible artifacts and secret ululating tales of the impossible, has morphed in her new home.
This is a record for Stockholm, recorded at EMS with a microphone only three examples were ever made of. The title is the simultaneous two languages which now twine together: ”Lent skiner solen på själens skinn / The sun shines down softly on the skin of the soul.” The improvisations, done entirely on the acoustic violin and in single takes, build upon listening to the moving of huge granite mountains for the building of things on Stockholms stone terrain, and the stones and machines in all the cities waterways found with hydrophones- on the songs of the new birds here, and the trains, and the hours the sun came forth until midnight and disappeared over a hundred years of rising and setting. It is for the endlessly disappearing and re-emerging versions of the city and the people who live in those tides, and many more secret tales.

Their arrangement of composer Julius Eastman’s “Stay On It” (1973) here finds the band turning the composition’s angelically layered waves of vibes, strings, and brass into a hypnotically propulsive party. As translated by the Baltimore band—Andrew Bernstein (saxophone, percussion), Max Eilbacher (bass, electronics) Owen Gardner (guitar, clavinet), Sam Haberman (drums)—this “Stay On It” connects the ethereal airiness in Eastman’s piece with pulsating dance music, recognizing that minimalism’s empty space can be transposed into the spaciousness carved out by rhythm hitting the body. The music of Eastman, who passed away in 1990, is currently undergoing a much deserved revival, though his politically irreverent, playfully effusive, and unabashedly beautiful music still sounds ahead of its time. That Horse Lords would turn to him only reinforces the band’s ongoing interest in rewiring rock’s basic instrumental units, rock band as laboratory. For this experiment, guest artist Abdu Ali turns Eastman’s program notes into a spoken-word introduction to the track, establishing the swaggering, joyous mood that follows. Mixtape IV pairs this gorgeously ebullient Eastman interpretation with “Remember the Future,” a track that takes the band’s latent political leaning and turns them into pithy observation. That’s not only because it’s a sound and voice collage that includes chanting protestors recorded at the Women’s March on Washington on January 21. “Remember the Future” takes a Samuel Beckettian I can’t go on, I’ll go on approach to song storytelling, weaving the voices of a man (Haberman) and a woman’ (sound artist Bonnie Jones) into a twenty-minute excursion that bounces from electronic bubbling to an ambient tapestry and on to a galloping groove. Those two voices speak English. And they say things that make sense as individual sentences. They just don’t make much sense when heard in their entirety, a verbal exchange that becomes content noise—an impish way for an instrumental band to point out that language can be a great way for people, politicians, corporations, and artists, to say nothing much at all.

Some legends take longer than others to become known. The process of handing down the myths takes time . . . some won’t see it come to fruition in their lifetime. But whenever you’re ready to know the tale of Frederick Michael St. Jude, it’s all right here . . . the WHOLE story . . . so far! “Almost Lost” is the third archival release in recent years from the almost-barely known 70s–80s Florida pop phenomenon, Frederick Michael St. Jude. In 2013 his outrageous first album Here Am I was reissued, and in 2015, his infamous unreleased second one, the ambitious concept album Gang War, finally came to light. Now with “Almost Lost,” the whole story is almost told! The tale of FM St. Jude is one of fate sighted and of fate denied, all during the golden era of rock and roll, when you could peddle counter-cultural ideas from within the system, simultaneously creating subversion AND frosting-light entertainment! For FM, it happened like this: after a decade of hard work and good times in the northeast, fronting a series of talented club acts, 1972 found Freddy Dengler in Florida, looking for new opportunities in showbiz. An aspirant songwriter, an ebullient performer and a natural star, he found inspiration in the name Frederick Michael St. Jude, and began stockpiling tunes designed to take the pop radio market by storm! Then in the summer of 1976, while driving through Ft. Lauderdale, Freddy fortuitously came upon SRS International Recording Studio. After presenting them with a demonstration of his tunes and inestimable performing style, FM St. Jude was soon signed to their Soul Deep label. Freddy had managed to find the perfect partnership to bring his songs to fruition, as the SRS producers applied classic old-school techniques with left-field sweetener overdubs that managed to surprise even FM himself, when he finally heard them! During one of these visits, fate smiled down, as Freddy requested and received tape copies of all the masters he’d cut thus far. When the NEXT twist of fate occurred; the inevitable folding and flying-by-night of SRS (who junked their tape archive on the way out of town), it made it easier for FM St. Jude to carry on. Within a few years, he was onto a new phase that would really shake things up: his Gang War opera. Again, fate showed a cruel hand, and only three tracks were released until the right thing finally happened on Drag City in 2015 — but by then, the much-desired CD release of his opus was hardly the way to get the youth of America all over the world involved! “Almost Lost” collects the six remaining track from the SRS period, all possessed of the same glittery, loungy charm that makes Here Am I such a oddly compelling listen. For the deep-south bonafides of the house band, all one has to do is attune one’s ear to the speakers: the rhythms are sleek and round, with undulating flow and a finely focused light touch, featuring a fluid variety of guitars and keyboard sounds coloring the arrangements. But the star of the show is always Frederick Michael St. Jude, with his breathy, Bowie-inspired melodies and his ready-for-the-variety-show magnanimity. The six songs here will have you wanting six more from FM St. Jude! But until the next twist of fate occurs, this is where the story ends . . . for NOW! ARTIST PROFILE: From its beginnings as an acous0c solo project in 2012, Boca Raton, Florida’s Northbound has evolved and grown into a hybrid en0ty of equal parts solo act and fully fleshed-out band. Jonathon Fraser, the crea0ve soul of Northbound, has a dis0nc0ve wri0ng style that is integral to the band’s cohesiveness amongst the evolu0on. With nothing but an acous0c guitar and his voice, he pours his energy into the lyrics and vocals. The rest of the band then joins him to flesh out the songs in the studio.
