“Maybe one of the best rock records of the century, and maybe one of the top 10 rock records ever made.” - NPR’s #8 Best Album of 2016, Teens of Denial
BIO
Making A Door Less Open, the new album from Car Seat Headrest and the first set of brand-new songs since 2016’s Teens Of Denial, is set for release on May 1. The album will be available on vinyl and CD featuring distinct tracklists and mixes for each format. Created over the course of four years, Making a Door Less Open is the result of a fruitful “collaboration” between Car Seat Headrest, led by Will Toledo, and 1 Trait Danger, a CSH electronic side project consisting of drummer Andrew Katz and Toledo’s alternative persona, “Trait.” To realize this, the band recorded the album twice: once live with guitars, drums and bass, and once in a MIDI environment using purely synthesized sounds. During the mixing process, the two approaches were gradually combined using elements of each, with additional overdubs. In this way, Making A Door Less Open sees Toledo embarking on new and imaginative roads to songwriting and recording, placing emphasis on the individual songs, each with its own “special energy,” rather than attempting to draw a coherent storyteller narrative through the album as he has in the past , resulting in his most dynamic and open-ended work to date. Comprised of Will Toledo, Andrew Katz (drums), Ethan Ives (guitar) and Seth Dalby (bass), Car Seat Headrest has either released 11 or three albums to date, depending on the way you look at it. A prolific songwriter, Toledo took his moniker from making early recordings in the private environment of his family’s car, releasing a dozen self-recorded and produced albums on Bandcamp and building a tight-knit following. Toledo has since gone from an empty five-seater to selling out tours and filling festival main stages. 2015’s Teens of Style was a collection of songs from his early years. The band’s proper Matador debut, Teens of Denial, followed in 2016 and catapulted them to overnight commercial success and widespread critical acclaim, as well as highlighting Toledo as a prodigious lyricist. 2018’s Twin Fantasy, an epic re-imagination of an album originally released in 2011,

TRACK LISTING Me + Mine (Lamentations) Before The Dogwood Blooms Six Years Come September Starts With You Brightleaf + Burley The Luckier You Get The Day I Learned To Lie To You A Better South How Wicked I Was The Long Haul LAMENTATIONS is a 10-song rumination on the current state of the world around me. I was raised in the faith and the book of Lamentations was always one that caught my attention. A broken man crying out to the heavens, asking why God sat back and let his country fall apart. Questioning the sheer existence of a higher power in the lowest of times. How could an all loving God sit back and let an entire nation’s cry for help go unanswered? I saw many parallels in that story and the current climate of this country in 2020. There are a large group of people who were promised something in 2016. They are still waiting for those promises to be fulfilled. This is a record about the things that break people. Religion, politics, addiction, love, money, family, history. I believe it is an empathetic look at the other side. A group of stories about losing everything and still finding the will to stand back up and fight for the things that matter the most. - BJ Barham MARKETING POINTS ● Produced by Shooter Jennings ● Comprehensive press and radio campaigns, including promo appearances to support release ● Comprehensive social media ad campaigns to support release ● Available for in-stores and contesting campaigns with retail ● Multiple pre-order campaigns including the indie option ● Comprehensive touring starting in May VINYL Sel. #: NW5396 LP CONFIG: 1x LP, Jacket, Black Vinyl UPC: 607396539611 Box Lot: 40 Count Genre: Alt-Country, Singer-Songwriter

Ride handed the entirety of their highly acclaimed sixth studio album, This Is Not A Safe Place (WEBB570CD / LP), to mysterious London act, Pêtr Aleksänder, who stripped the songs back to just the band’s vocals and added their customarily beautiful string arrangements, keys and synth textures beneath them. The results take Ride deep into the neo-classical / ambient territory that a couple of the remixes of their previous album hinted at. These new “reimaginings” will appeal to fans of those musical styles, as well as those who consider themselves a part of the Ride fanbase. “Dizzy Atmosphere and its cross-connected comrades managed to acknowledge and salute Gillespie’s pioneering efforts without ever mimicking his motions or taking on his mantle. You couldn’t ask for a truer tribute to this giant.” — JazzTimes
When Dizzy Gillespie put his hat in the ring for President of the United States in 1964, he also offered to be the first African-American astronaut, just in case they couldn’t find anyone else. In making Dizzy Atmosphere, Dave Douglas’s tribute to the great trumpeter, composer and humanist, Douglas said he wanted to explore Dizzy’s experimental and wide open mind as well as the influence of his music. This album shines a light on the whole legacy of Gillespie, one of America’s finest artists. The original music Douglas wrote swings and shimmers with a grace reminiscent of the great man. Dizzy Atmosphere also contains several imaginative arrangements of Gillespie compositions, including reinterpretations of two key Gillespie tunes “Manteca” and “Pickin’ the Cabbage.” Douglas’s band is also remarkable, featuring fellow trumpeter Dave Adewumi, recent winner of the Carmine Caruso Competition, along with pianist Fabian Almazan, guitarist Matt Stevens, bassist Carmen Rothwell, and drummer Joey Baron. Like his previous explorations of the influential music of Mary Lou Williams, Wayne Shorter, and Booker Little, this album is sure to inspire listeners to hear the music of Dizzy Gillespie in new and interesting ways.

On their new 2-disc album, GRAMMY® Award-winning The Okee Dokee Brothers ask their audience to join the chorus and sing along. The prolific duo, Justin Lansing and Joe Mailander, wrote 27 songs perfect for singing throughout the natural rhythms of the day, from morning (disc 1) to night (disc 2). Songs for Singin’ (Release date: May 1st, 2020) includes a 32-page book with the lyrics and chords to every song. Joe and Justin say, “it doesn't matter if you sing these songs perfectly. Go ahead and add your own words, change the keys to fit your voice, speed them up, slow them down. Make them more meaningful, make them more ridiculous, but most of all, make them your own.”
Track Listing:
In the folk tradition of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Songs for Singin’ inspires families to engage in the current social conversation. As long as folks are singing together there’s a glimpse of hope for our world. “So sing to the sunrise and sing to the moon,” the Brothers say. “Sing with your kids and sing with your neighbors. Sometimes it just takes singing a song with one another to remind us that we’re all family.”

“The charm of the Lemon Twigs is in the unabashed, theater-kid fun they have with their record collection, an energy that guides their work more than any particular style” - Pitchfork “When I first heard The Lemon Twigs, I felt like I was listening to music from a time that never was. The sound made by these two teenaged brothers distills pop music from the 1960s through a 21stcentury lens.” - Bob Boilen, NPR “The Lemon Twigs blend classic country twang with piano-driven glam, building steadily to a peak packed with an uproarious burst of banjo and guitar.” - Rolling Stone “The main concern, for them, is to keep working, to capitalize on a moment and chase the big, convoluted dreams they concocted back there in Hicksville. It has been a strange enough trip so far. Who knows what weird twists and turns the Lemon Twigs have in store next. But contrary to whatever you might think, they definitely aren’t fucking around.” - Stereogum “Things are most definitely happening for The Lemon Twigs, but this isn’t something they suddenly lucked into: Michael and Brian have been working towards a career in music in one way or another their whole lives.” - Vice

OVERVIEW Being in a toxic relationship can sometimes feel like being lost in a maze. Every attempt to turn a corner lands you back where you started. Austra aka Katie Austra Stelmanis’ fourth album, HiRUDiN – set for release on May 1st - is both a bold acknowledgement of such patterns of behaviour and a testament to the power of breaking them.
HiRUDiN saw Austra taking an entirely different, free-spirited approach to making a record. Seeking out all new collaborators, she booked three days of sessions in Toronto with improv musicians she’d never met before. Accumulating a vast and vibrant mass of source material, Austra holed up in a studio in the Spanish countryside and took a collage approach to sampling, arranging, writing and producing to reveal the songs that would form the album. HiRUDiN additionally saw her work alongside co-producers for the first time, Rodaidh McDonald and Joseph Shabason, and she brought in David Wrench and Heba Kadry to mix and master the record respectively. While Austra’s third album, Future Politics, was concerned with the external power structures that shape society, HiRUDiN points inward. Named after the peptide released by leeches that is the most potent anticoagulant in the world, it is about the importance of healing the self, letting go of harmful influences, and finding the power to rebuild through exploring your innermost desires. It reaps the rewards of Austra’s leap into the unknown, in her most introspective yet inventive statement to date.
SELLING POINTS • This is Austra's fourth album, she has ammased over 20 million streams. • Radio campaign to impact non-commercial/specialty formats on album release. • Major market North American dates to be announced. • Standard LP comes with printed inner sleeve and download card.

JOHANNA WARREN CHAOTIC GOOD
CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com “I’ve been thinking of life as one big roleplaying game,” Johanna Warren offers when asked why she chose to title her new album after a Dungeons & Dragons reference. “There’s chance, there’s choice, and there’s alignment—what forces in the universe do I choose to align myself with?” Chaotic Good is Warren’s fifth full-length album and first for Wax Nine/Carpark Records. It represents a moment of rupture in the singer-songwriter’s career as she transitions away from the quiet, folk-adjacent work that defined her early solo albums with a bold statement piece that demonstrates the breadth of her ambition. Here, Warren flits between crushing admissions set to spare piano solos and muscular declarations of independence that have more in common with grunge acts of bygone years than anything we’ve heard from Warren in the past. “The last few years I’ve had an urge to change my name, or create some alter-ego,” she says. “But I’ve come to realize that ‘Johanna’ is already just a character. We think we know who we are based on what’s already happened, but we’re allowed to make new choices.” The oceanic, soothing single “Bed of Nails” illustrates that realization perfectly when Warren sings: “I tried a little bit too hard to be myself/It turned me into something else.” Recording Chaotic Good was an exercise in self-reinvention. Warren decided to produce the album on her own, borrowing recording equipment from a friend to do much of the preliminary tracking alone in a garage. She enlisted a few key collaborators to fully enliven her vision, most notably former Sticklips bandmates Chris St. Hilaire and Jim Bertini. On the raucously resilient “Part of It,” Warren is joined by her musical brethren as she addresses a noncommittal narcissist and—a trademark of Warren’s work—the narrator’s complicity in her own suffering: “Don’t look at me like I’m the one holding you back/and I won’t look at you like you have something I lack.” Adding to the album’s dynamism is the fact that it took shape over the course of four years in studios across the United States while Warren was touring her most recent albums Gemini I and II. Warren uses words like “patchwork” and “scrapbook” to describe Chaotic Good; it is a collection of sonic snapshots that transport her to specific places in time with each listen.
TRACKLISTING 1. Rose Potion 2. Part of It 3. Only the Truth 4. Bed of Nails 5. Twisted 6. Hole in the Wall 7. Faking Amnesia 8. Every Death 9. Thru Yr Teeth 10. Bones of Abandoned Futures
“This album is about learning how to be with myself after a lifetime of codependent relationships,” Warren says. You can hear that especially well on “Twisted,” which finds her confronting a former lover, and ultimately, letting them go. “I’m a warrior, but I give up,” Warren howls, the surrounding production warping and distorting as her raw vocal crests to an acidic scream. Though her lyrics are resigned, her delivery is anything but. It is a moment of total abandon, when the multitudinous aspects of a personality coalesce to form something at once dazzling and monstrous. “Chaotic Good is a metamorphosis,” Warren says. “It’s my phoenix moment. Everything I’ve done before was just building the funeral pyre.”

The Stroppies - Look Alive

TLV130CD 5055869547086
The Stroppies have now evolved into what some might call a “proper band”. 2019 saw the release of their debut LP Whoosh!, a studio-based affair that evolved The Stroppies sound, underpinned with a newly discovered melodic classicism. Look Alive!, their latest effort which was recorded only months after the bands return to Australia after their second European tour of 2019, represents a marriage of the two different styles of Stroppies recordings and rounds out an incredibly productive twelve months for the group. Look Alive! Is the sound of The Stroppies honing their craft under new and unfamiliar conditions. Written mainly on the road then finished and recorded at home with whatever was on hand with only three of the four members present, it is according to the band’s singer/guitarist Angus Lord, "an EP forged in circumstance. A sum total of fleeting vignettes on scraps of paper, voice memos and iPhone notepads all collated between soundchecks and long stretches in a tour van rolled pieced together over weekly jams " If Whoosh! glimmered and sparkled with tight production and succinct pop songwriting, Look Alive! is a somewhat darker shade, employing a more diffuse, impressionistic sonic palette and a more obvious penchant for experimentation. Tracked by the band and long time friend/ collaborator Alex Macfarlane (Twerps, The Stevens, Hobbies Galore) at home and then mixed and mastered direct off the tape at Phaedra studios in Coburg by John Lee, it’s also a somewhat collaborative project. The title track sees acoustic pianos duel with synthesizers over Pavement-esque guitar wig outs, whilst ‘The Aisles of the Supermarket’ employs tape loops to forge loose ambient foundations. Though these ideas may reflect the band’s noted “stream of consciousness creativity”, remarkably the songwriting remains as sharp as ever. Album opener ‘Burning Bright’ gallops forward with the propulsive energy of ‘77-era Talking Heads. Elsewhere, lead single ‘Holes In Everything’ presents the band at its pop best: Their penchant for push and pull of light and dark splashed against the backdrop of trepidation and humour makes The Stroppies records so endearing and open-ended. Though undeniably pop structure orientated, the bands propensity for re-inventing and re-appropriating their recording and writing process ensures that nothing starts to fossilize. Indeed, Look Alive! is that most intriguing of records precisely because it represents two ideas at the same time - the sound of a band in flux, but also the sound of a band becoming more sure footed as they walk their crooked line. 1. Burning Bright / 2. Look Alive / 3. Sad Sorry Soul / 4. Roller Cloud / 5. Holes in Everything / 6. The Aisles of the Supermarket / 7. Enter or Exit / 8. Rigid Men and Conduct Codes
CÉSAR VIDAL
César Vidal Writing somber songs that you want to play over and over agian or pop tunes that never comes off corny and singing them with perfection without sounding contrived takes a unique voice. César Vidal from Swedish psych/60s/garage/indie-act Caesars aka Caesars Palace has that voice and he makes it all look so easy.
Side A 1 Same Old Bus 2 If You Want This Love 3 Up The Hills 4 Moped Girl 5 Universal Friend Side B 1 I Wonder 2 Step By Step 3 Watching The Moon 4 Bilder 5 Keep On Trying
The tracks on his debut solo album are ageless and could have landed softly into any decade from the 60s and onwards. There are hints of just about everything from jangly psych pop, British invasion, surf, shoegaze, lo-fi and punk, all delivered with the golden voice of a sad angel. César Vidal is a seasoned player after years with his band but here he really gets to stretch out and take full command of his entire musical universe without compromising. Give a grain of sand lots of time and a pearl takes form in an oyster. César Vidal delivers not only a pearl but a necklace of perfect songs on this stunning solo debut. There are no fillers here, only killers.

Over three albums under his own name, Devon Williams has honed a trademark blend of power pop, folk rock, and jangle pop, anchored by his distinctive melodic gifts. After a six-year break, he returns with "A Tear In The Fabric": 12 songs driven by a lilting dreaminess, rock-solid songcraft, and unerring hooks.
The years since his last album were defined by a series of major life changes; Williams found himself engaged in an endless dialogue with his thoughts and, in turn, continuously tweaking and prodding the material. The finished songs are a series of evocative snapshots for Williams: questions asked, answers given, compromises reached.
Rarely have songs so personal sounded so luxurious. Reference points might include artists like Tommy Keene, The Church and Felt, but Williams is very much his own writer and in a catalog full of pop gems, "A Tear In The Fabric" stands out for its completeness – individual worlds of sound and sentiment, timeless and transcending their origins. Ital Tek (a.k.a. Alan Myson) returns to Planet Mu with his sixth album ‘Outland‘. The album was written during a period of new beginnings following a move out of the city to a quieter space and the birth of his first child. During this time of self-imposed isolation Alan recorded a huge amount of source material and spent weeks and months sitting up at night with his newborn, listening back and making notes on how the new record should take form, focusing and developing ideas to shape this lean tentrack album. Alan talks of the record being a collaboration between two parts of himself, something that definitely comes across as the album unfolds. Textures are something Alan excels at and on his last album, the largely beatless ‘Bodied’, it felt as if he was building a new sound-world. On ‘Outland’ he expands upon this. The album brings together the extremes of Alan's sound, contrasting roughened bass and beats with starker more detailed atmospheres and emotions.
On Colored Vinyl LP and CD formats 01 Chamber Music 02 Open Heart 03 Deadhead 04 Reverie 05 Bladed Terrain 06 Diamond Child 07 Angel In Ruin 08 Leaving The Grid 09 Endless 10 Oblivion Theme
The most beat-driven song here is ‘Deadhead’, with its gnarled bouncing bass, angular distorted melodies and cavernous textures. On tracks like ‘Bladed Terrain’ the contrasts are even more defined with buzzing drones and razor sharp drums plunging into a grainy fog, giving the track a dramatic 3D feel. Then there are the stop-start pauses of ‘Leaving The Grid’, where the song evaporates into space before reemerging with shuddering rhythms and ghostly textures. Melodies crawl around these tracks as if they’re just waking up, as heard on the atmospheric ‘Angel In Ruin’. The sleep-deprived fraying of the senses became Alan’s routine and one which he says gave him a renewed creative energy; half-asleep, working through the night, and then into the daytime super-focused but exhausted. Prone to audio hallucinations whilst writing the album, he aimed to capture these distortions in his perception of pitch and time, and you can hear these effects interpreted on tracks like ‘Endless’ and ‘Open Heart’ as melodies phase and slip out of time like an emotional Doppler effect. This is also true of the soaring atonal synths at the peak of ‘Diamond Child’, which feel like the aural equivalent of eye floaters. These intuitive feelings and functions are a difficult thing to capture in sound, but Alan manages it beautifully and always makes the result feel warm and adventurous, heartfelt and epic.

Konradsen Rodeo No. 5 Out May 1, 2020 on Cascine Konradsen is the Norwegian duo of vocalist and pianist Jenny Marie Sabel and multi-instrumentalist Eirik Vildgren. Inspired by the traditional songs and hymns Sabel sang with her family as a child, and the modern pop music she and Vildgren collectively admire — the work of Sufjan Stevens, Frank Ocean and composer Christophe Chassol — Konrasen weaves Sabel’s soulful and transportive vocals with field recordings and samples of ambient sounds. Voices of past and present dance over minimalist piano, atmospheric electronics, programmed beats and organic horns, forming a delicate sonic and thematic narrative centered on family and community that reflects the arc of their musical journey. After last year’s celebrated debut album, Saints and Sebastian Stories, the pair returns with a new EP, Rodeo No. 5. These new songs are perhaps more organic and spare, but no less powerful or beautiful.

WAAT072CD 5055869506762
Irma Vep is the on-going, evolving main vehicle for polymath musician Edwin Stevens and on Embarrassed Landscape the project has reached a zenith. Recorded with frequent collaborators Ruari Maclean and Andrew Cheetham, it is an album that breathes in a fetid skip full of millennial dread, self-effacing anxiety and doubt before exhaling it as heartbreaking songs and ecstatic abandon. Built around the skeleton of Stevens’s songwriting and fleshed out with loose, virtuoso playing, it’s a body of work that could have been the anxious songs of an overthinker but rendered here Embarrassed Landscape revels in a kind of un-selfconscious confidence. Lyrics are riven with poetic, crushing self-analysis and absurdity only to be performed against a backdrop of trance-rock music skewered with Stevens’s own instantly recognisable guitar playing. Songs wring nuggets of uncanny truth out of prosaic, every day activities while sounding like Rolling Thunder Revue era-Dylan. Songs that seem hewn from some unspeakable personal pain are laced with a disarming streak of black humour, massive, world-ending psych jams that harken to Vibracathedral Orchestra’s wall of sound dissipate into tender songs that deserve to be picked apart and cried to.

HUBRIS is the fourth album from the New York based songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Kristo Rodzevski. The album is a natural continuation from his previous free jazz/pop infused work, but includes a more hard-edged, rock sound. Rodzevski works with his usual troupe of notable musicians from New York’s avant and experimental music scene. His abrasive guitar chords provide an ominous foundation over which vulnerable vocals and deeply personal lyrics are intertwined with the scintillating, architectural electronics of Ikue Mori (DNA, Phantom Orchard), the forward driving drums of Tomas Fujiwara (Thumbscrew, Triple Double), the phantasmagorical sound of Mary Halvorson (Code Girl), and the grounding, iconoclastic bass of Bill Laswell. Richly produced to craft a singular landscape of sound by Laswell, it achieves a blended and layered effect while still allowing the songs space to breathe. Acerbic and provocative, HUBRIS is a sonic mural, a turning, folding chimera with themes of distorted intimacy, unconscious fantasy, mortality, loss, and the realities of the immigrant experience. This is life in its unflinching wholeness messy, sad, exuberant, and joyous.

Heron and Richard Russell made in New York during the sessions for I’m New Here. It is comprised of songs that Gil chose from his back catalogue, just voice and piano. Each song he chose was from a different album of his. He carefully curated the selection, so this album serves as an excellent introduction to his previous output. Originally released for RSD 2014 as a limited edition of 2,000 copies with silk screen covers, this has now been repressed on black vinyl as a companion piece to the current Gil Scott Heron Makaya McCraven release.

Empyrean Kenotaph Medela Venia Clarion Love
Official Websites: www.benlukasboysen.com www.erasedtapes.com PR Agent: julian@erasedtapes.com
Berlin based composer and producer Ben Lukas Boysen returns with his most progressive and shape-shifting work to date, the long awaited Mirage, on 1 May 2020 with Erased Tapes. The third album to be penned under his own name proceeding his Hecq moniker, Mirage follows 2013’s Gravity and the acclaimed 2016 full length Spells, a record as much admired by his peers as it was loved by fans that not only yielded remixes from Max Cooper and Tim Hecker, but also opened Jon Hopkins’ Late Night Tales compilation. Since the release of Spells, Ben continued to be in demand for his scoring abilities, collaborating with cellist and composer Sebastian Plano on the music for David OReilly’s landmark innovative video game Everything. It was added to the long list for the Best Animated Short at the 90th Academy Awards, making it the first video game to qualify for an Oscar. In 2019 Ben contributed to the Brainwaves project alongside fellow Erased Tapes artists Michael Price and Högni Egilsson in collaboration with a team of scientists at Goldsmiths University, London — linking states of consciousness and music. He also scored the soundtrack to the DAFF award-winning German TV show Beat, the feature film The Collini Case, and co-composed the music for the short film Manifesto with Nils Frahm, starring Cate Blanchett. As with Gravity and Spells, Ben has an array of musical guests adorning Mirage, including long time collaborator, Berlin based cellist and composer Anne Müller as well as Australian saxophonist and composer Daniel Thorne — for whom Ben wrote parts specifically, having heard his 2019 solo debut Lines of Sight. Lead track Medela features both and takes the listener on a kaleidoscopic journey that slides with ease across sonic terrains. By the end it’s difficult to tell what exactly was heard; “I wanted to experiment with blending these recordings with 100% artificial elements, often to points where an instrument becomes an abstraction of what it was and the musicians’ presence in the song is much more of an important DNA string in the song rather than an obvious layer.” Mirage, like its title suggests, feels like a sonic optical illusion — each piece containing sounds and techniques bent and processed to make them seem overexposed; the overly felt-y piano on Clarion, Daniel Thorne’s saxophone on Medela, the single note voice of Lisa Morgenstern splitting into different chords on Empyrean. It is detectable but also easily missed, like the double piano on Kenotaph that could be perceived as one, but is actually two pianos in two different rooms, separate countries even — one is digital while the other is acoustic. While on Spells Ben made programmed pieces sound indistinguishable from human playing, with Mirage he set out to do the opposite and make the human touch unrecognisable, creating something of a mystery or a mirage. “A lot of the elements and instruments you hear on the album are either not what you think they are, or exactly what you think they are but behave differently or they’re elements you definitely know but they are hidden, processed, or morphed into something else. With Spells and Gravity I was trying to hide the machines. On Mirage, I’m trying to hide the human” — Ben Lukas Boysen Praise for 2016’s Spells: "Dexterous melding of the orchestral and electronic worlds… A blissful collage of organic and digital sound" ★★★★ — MOJO “Piano in big spaces, misterioso effects, frozen journeys, strangely upbeat nocturnes” — The Wire

UPC: 888295972857
Recorded by four well-known master improvisers, Dave Sewelson’s More Music for a Free World represents the culmination of decades of a deep musical partnership between Sewelson and his bandmates., Recorded in Brooklyn, New York, the music capital of the world, at Park West Studios on December 17 of 2018, this recording is the follow-up to the acclaimed Music for a Free World, released in late 2018. The music here is completely improvised. Maybe someone was going to tell the musicians to try to make some shorter pieces, less challenging for a casual listener but they didn’t. Perhaps someone said, let the drums kick this one off or “go” but no instruction was given. These sounds come out of the silence that is already swinging. The results show that when these four musicians start playing together the result is exquisite music. Call it chemistry, collaboration, community but it is contagious.

CAT NO: DISC4 (Vinyl) UPC: 5060384617350 (Vinyl) RELEASE DATE: May 1st, 2020
Overview:
Otherworldly beat science from the currently vibrant Washington DC underground. The heavily processed MCing of NappyNappa weaves in and out of the skewed electronics and stuttering percussion of Patrick Cain. Loosely affiliated with the Future Times crew and featuring contributions from Dolo Percussion (aka Max D). In the duo’s own words “a collaborative experiment in liberated sound, vision, and performance“, Model Home orbit in their own universe, with glimmers of light from distant galaxies refracted in their sound. Some moments are reminiscent of DJ Screw, MF Doom or a mangled dub sound system cassette that’s been left in the sun for too long, the grainy collage backing tracks closer to the sick midwest drones of Aaron Dilloway than any modern beatmakers, but this is implicitly it’s own thing. The spirit of free improvisation pervades the tracks, a sound evolving from two artistic sensibilities bouncing off each other without a set plan and creating a third pathway to unknown worlds. One Year compiles tracks from 8 different self-released mixtapes made during an intense initial 12 month period of musical activity that birthed the project. Approached with the same archival sensibility that Disciples has brought to albums-that-never-were from Black Lodge, Bogdan Raczynski and His Name As Alive, but with the idea of creating a framework to present an underground NOW sound. A Jamaican style ‘showcase’ album for these outliers from the District of Columbia. Although without sonic precedent it somehow makes a kind of perverse sense that these sounds have emerged from the same place that birthed Dischord Records and Trouble Funk. Model Home reached the attention of Disciples via the writer Mike McGonigal, the force behind essential music periodicals Chemical Imbalance, Yeti, the newly launched Maggot Brain, and sleevenote writer for our series of unearthed His Name Is Alive teenage home recordings. He opined that had cult UK label On-U Sound started today, this is the kind of stuff they would be releasing, which immediately had our interest well and truly piqued, and indeed perhaps a 21st century interpretation of the still unique and indefinable hybrid sounds of New Age Steppers or Mark Stewart & The Maffia makes some kind of sense when trying to swim in the slipstream of Nappa’s cosmic logic and beautifully abstracted flow, the spliced-and-diced loops of Cain adding hook-laden carpets of texture, just check the quasi-gamelan bed of “Cheek To The Matrix” or the Patrick Conway synth soundtrack through a fuzz pedal thrust of “Livin’ In A Treehouse”. McGonigal also says: “It's dubby and weird, electronics and voice -- experimental rap of interest to fans of Sleaford Mods, Roll Deep Crew, the Fall, 'Metal Box,' etc.” Product Description:

Stockholm, Sweden quartet MANKIND have long been a hidden treasure of the European underground rock scene, touring across Europe on the strength of a few EPs and singles, and now they’re finally ready to unveil their debut LP POPHITS on May 1 via Stockholm label Lazy Octopus Records (home to Holy Now, Second Oracle, AOP etc). Having worked with the likes of Strokes producer Gordon Raphael on their early work MANKIND mainly opted to self-produce when it finally came to recording the long-awaited debut album – only one out of 12 tracks was recorded with Raphael, the rest is all MANKIND. Having grown a reputation as a must-see live band it’s easy to see why with their blend of garage rock energy and britpop stylings and with POPHITS the band’s set to introduce themselves to the wider world. Press for MANKIND “a gritty, sweat drenched underground track that taps into grunge pop anthemics with ease” – The Line of Best Fit “art rock with a rust-coating of scuzz, music that flicks between dirt-raw and gritty and playful and snarky” – Nothing But Hope And Passion “dark and menacing, hypnotic and fierce” – The Revue

“The band is devoted to the creation/destruction dichotomy, along with an American roots music aesthetic and punk attitude.” Prefix, 2009 After their initial self titled record, recorded live and performed mainly on the street, The Builders and the Butchers entered the studio with acclaimed and beloved Portland musician and producer Chris Funk to record the bands next collection of songs. An album to be titled Salvation is a Deep Dark Well. The spirit of the Builders has always been, and always will be, inclusion and collaboration. From the early shows on the street, to passing out instruments in clubs, the early days were always about how many people would be “in the band” on any given night. The Builders took this spirit of inclusion into the studio where they invited some of their favorite musicians and best friends to perform on Salvation is a Deep Dark Well. Over 50 different musicians perform on the album, including the Portland Flash Choir, a gospel choir, Portland Cello Project, string quartets, as well as horn sections. This is on top of the band members who played over 30 different instruments themselves. These performances were masterfully orchestrated by Chris Funk and then mixed with care by the esteemed Tucker Martine. Resulting in an album that is not only lush and full, but also immediate, vital and dark.

Eighty-minute program with selections from HausMo releases from 2018-2020. XL J-cards and 6-panel CD packaging. Hausu Mountain was featured in Tiny Mix Tape’s “Favorite 30 Labels of the Decade”, FACT Mag’s Best Label of the Year list, and other label-centric features in Pitchfork, Bandcamp, Chicago Reader, VICE, Red Bull Music Academy, & Impose. “There was also the warped improvisational vibes of Moth Cock, the MIDI dreamscapes of Nonlocal Forecast, the gonzo footwork by Khaki Blazer, the gleeful reimagination of library music from Euglossine, the mutating collages of Eartheater, the glitchy attack on cyberpunk tropes mounted by Fire-Toolz, the densely human reveries of TALsounds, and so much more. Each of these albums and artists were key to understanding the unique community that coalesced around Hausu Mountain, a group of creators and fans who continue to call us into the next, unexplored zone. On to the following peak. And you can bet a long, strange trip awaits.” – Tiny Mix Tapes “...delivering experimental music that was as challenging as it was fun. Hausu’s albums overflowed with personality...” - FACT Magazine “No matter the ostensible scene or style of a given release on the Chicago experimental label Hausu Mountain, the music’s sort of spiritually united. It’s hazy, organic, surreal, smoky, and absurdist—even occasionally a little paranoid. It’s the stuff that you want to pass around to your friends once you’ve experienced it yourself. ” - Vice
Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755
As the old adage goes: another arbitrary period of years, another HausMo Mixtape. Doug Kaplan and Maxwell Allison, heads of the Chicago-based experimental label Hausu Mountain and members of projects like Good Willsmith and Pepper Mill Rondo, scroll back through the label’s recent catalog for the second installation of their compilation series. While 2018’s HausMo Mixtape I sourced music from around 80 releases from the label’s first five years on this big ole blue ball, HausMo Mixtape II culls from the pool of releases that have appeared from 2018 to mid-2020. With the HausMo biscuit factory churning out the goods at a more competent and prolific rate than ever, it’s no surprise that this relatively short period contains untold depths of freak magic. Cooked up by a stable of artists both deeply rooted in the label’s catalog and new to the family, the compilation’s 22 tracks lay out a body of far-flung styles and idiosyncratic visions that manage, like all of the label’s releases, to make some twisted sense when framed together. Featuring everything from progressive avant-electronics to fried free-jazz noise to gonzo pop deconstruction to ornate jazz fusion to to pure ambient drift — to as many possible descriptors as there are numbers in the catalog — what HausMo releases share is the same as what drives Kaplan and Allison: a “chaotic good” motivation to entertain their listeners while challenging them in equal measure. Like a nice return to a familiar routine, listeners know that their next trip to Hausu Mountain will yield music consistent only in its unpredictability, committed to a benevolent strain of confusion. The 2018-2020 period sees threads central to the Hausu Mountain mosaic teased out and sent unfolding off at new angles. Producers like Bonnie Baxter, Tiger Village, and RXM Reality, all at least three albums deep in the HausMo catalog at this point, continue to explore the space between structurally crumbling electronic experimentation and dancefloorready bangers. Seasoned heads Pulse Emitter, M. Geddes Gengras, and Long Distance Poison plumb the far reaches of ambient and drone music at varying degrees of cosmic drift and softly percolating rhythmic presence. Brass and electronics duos Moth Cock and BANG! BROS hold down their unique brands of gonzo carnival-core noise/free-jazz improv, while Andrew Bernstein’s sax flows into spiraling, minimalist sheets of sound. Nonlocal Forecast and Euglossine offer up hyper-detailed Weather Channel jazz fusion compositions, and Dustin Wong expands his similarly luminous guitar-based style into the realm of dense electronic arrangement. Music from HausMo mainstay artists Fire-Toolz and Quicksails appears here in the form of previews of their forthcoming 2020 LPs: the former maintains a commitment to radically chameleonic composition and complete genre overload, while the latter sinks deeper into the sweet spot between austere synth work and percussive post-jazz atmospheres. Experimental / plunderphonic legend and Negativland member Wobbly turns in a glitched-out opus of garbled melody and app-focused electronic alchemy. Mondo Lava’s bedroom four-track recording slides its way through Afro-Brazilian rhythms, video game music timbres, and stoned synth psychedelia. Perhaps the biggest “?” moments arrive in the form of Kaplan’s and Allison’s own experiments, including the culture-in-a-blender sample hell of their duo Pepper Mill Rondo and the free-associative hip hop anachronisms of Allison’s collab with legendary underground rapper Sharkula. In their approach to the curation of Hausu Mountain, Kaplan and Allison insist on abolishing distinctions between high- and low-brow art, and reject any generational or preconceived value judgements that slot genres and styles into hierarchies based on their “coolness” or “cheesiness” at any given moment of assessment. The continuum of music history has shown that nothing is constant, and the accelerating rate of cultural regurgitation and recursive trend-chasing has become more fickle and arbitrary than ever. To exist outside of that realm is to allow only your personal interests as a listener to guide you, and to acknowledge that unexpected delight or complexity can be found in any mode of creation. As culture collapses into itself, new forms are created from the synthesis of seemingly diametrically opposed ideas just as easily as they spring to life seemingly with no precedent. Previously hated styles or tonal palettes provide a productive shock or a rush of joy when placed by the right hands in the right contexts. More than ever there really are no rules, other than those that artists impose upon themselves, and moments when even those limitations snap can yield truly exciting deviations. More than the musical traditions or production touchstones that Hausu Mountain artists choose to nod to on their path to self-expression, the vibrant personalities of the creators themselves shine brightly before us.

UK producer Stumbleine’s seventh album is chilled, heavenly and thought provoking. The album envelops the listener from the outset with the soft, pitched sway of “Sonder”. The track ebbs through calming shadows, showcasing Stumbleine’s warm, electronic glow and gamut of influences, with hushed hypnotic delayed sounds, vocal samples and snappy beats. Stumbleine’s skill at blending an array of electronic timbres washes over the largely instrumental record, exemplified in “Supermodels”, with its lo-fi chorus-drenched haze building to an emotional, percussion-driven climax. Here, and scattered about the album, RnB vocals are chopped-up, but glistening a dark, dreamy hue. A cover of the Hole song, “Malibu” features Elizabeth Heaton of Midas Fall.. Elsewhere on the album tracks like ‘Lost To The World’ come together more immediately with flourishing synths and soaring backdrops overlaid by a heady bass and intricate beats, while ‘White Noise Therapy’ invokes a cinematic Tokyo-set film score peppered with playful soft pianos. “Lost To the World” swings in addictive pitched-vocal punches, circling itself into a spiral. “Your Angel Was Fake” has a hopeful darkness about it -it scales and then pulls away, at once breathing and stopping, full of blanket synth pads and subtle snaps of percussion. His sound, if it can be compared to anything at all, straddles post-rock shoegaze soundscapes with ambient electronica and experimental movements. 1. Sonder 2. Aloof 3. Fassine’s third album and first on Trapped Animal Records, is a tribute to the unassuming heroes on the fringes of society - about the small pockets of communities that are overlooked, unheard, ignored. Their ways of work and living are changing, either drying up or being sold off, and this is causing people to burn with frustration whilst also causing them to reaffirm their strengths and identities”, say Fassine. The London trio’s distinctive take on electronic music has previously earned acclaim and support from the likes of The Guardian, The Independent, Clash and more. On ‘FORGE’ they’re bolder than ever before, the instrumentation heavier and more aggressive than on previous full lengths ‘Gourami’ (2017) and ‘Dialectik’ (2016)., “This process was far more improvisational - a lot of ideas were done on-the-fly in the studio. We had a skeletal demo, then ideas were batted out and put down. Far fewer demos were gone through to begin with, and gut instinct was followed much more quickly. We also decided that no matter what the song, if we liked it, it would go on’’. Their track ‘Whatever It Takes To Help You Sleep’ played as the backdrop to Netflix’s first feature film ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’, and ‘Leaves’ was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Queen Sugar. “Oppressive yet artful music of an electronic bent, the three-piece sit in a wonderfully British lineage of pop futurists." An album about the Metropolis, the naked city, the urban sprawl and the need to get back to the ripped back streets when you’re far away. If there are a million stories in the naked city, here are a few to keep you warm. Mixed and engineered by Ding Archer (The Fall, PJ Harvey) at his 6Db Studio in Salford, this album was co-produced by Archer and Harry Stafford. Led by Harry Stafford, best known as founder, guitarist and vocalist of post-punk gothic rockers Inca Babies, the band's core includes drummer Rob Haynes (The Membranes, Inca Babies), trumpeter Kevin Davy (Lamb, Cymande), guitarist Andy Mills, and Vincent O'Brien on Weisseborn slide guitar. 'Gothic Urban Blues' and debut solo album 'Guitar Shaped Hammers', released in December 2017, reflect a multitude of ideas around a driving yet lilting punk-piano blues. The new album features a more defined sound of a band finding its stride. The band is hereforth called Guitar Shaped Hammers to reflect this cohesion of musical unity - with more guitars from Vincent O'Brien, and an additional layered sonic blast from Nick Brown (The Membranes). With intense percussion from Rob Haynes and a truly masterful trumpet contribution from jazz supremo Kevin Davy, the result is very much the soundtrack of a basement radio station stumbling across a new genre they’ve tagged Gothic Urban Blues. 01.She Just Blew Me Away 02.Cruel Set of Shades 03.Gothic Urban Blues 04.Painted Ocean 05.Infinite Dust 06.Black Rain 07.Sideways Shuffle 08.Disappearing 09.Man in a bar 10.Into The storm

Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Russian parents, Alina Baraz has been around music all her life. With both parents having classical training, she was destined to find her voice through music. Almost immediately after the release of her first single, “Roses Dipped in Gold” at age 19, Baraz and her family moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career as a singer/songwriter full time. In 2015, Baraz released her debut project, Urban Flora. The acclaimed project was praised by the Guardian, NPR, Huffington Post, Harpers Bazaar and many more, and sat on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart for over 125 weeks, peaking at #2. RAC BOY Release Date: May 8, 2020 RAC (André Allen Anjos) returns with his third studio album, BOY, his second album release on Counter Records. The melody-driven indie-electronica that RAC has made for 'BOY', his forthcoming third album, washes over you like faint memories. The songs are soft, light, warm, and comforting, as though revisiting old photo albums and recalling years gone by without any of the day-to-day struggles. It's at peace with the past, while lodged in the present. André Allen Anjos (aka RAC) is originally from Porto in Portugal. He's 35-years-old now, and has lived in Portland, Oregon for the past decade with his wife and cats. And even though it's more than two decades in the past, he's never reconciled with his own childhood. He's decided to do so now… Three years ago, Anjos began to make 'BOY'. He had achieved so much in his career, between DJing, soundtrack work, and his own album releases. He felt more comfortable in his own skin, and in a place of security, to really delve into his formative years. “I didn't have a major concept, I just wanted to see what happened,” he says, of the longest record-making process he's ever committed to. He found himself more prolific than ever. “I was just writing and writing and writing. I wrote so many demos, and I kept coming back to this theme of childhood. So that's why I called it 'BOY'.” CAT NO: COUNT205 UPC: 5054429140569 Box Lot: 20

Almost every musical history contains at least one crucial forebear whose inventions were too bold to translate to a broad audience, but who was nonetheless a profound influence on subsequent generations, and therefore changed the culture at an odd remove—a musician’s musician”. In the nineteen-forties and fifties, that was Fess’s stature. Roy Byrd aka Professor Longhair, his legacy looms larger than any other musical figure with the possible exception of Louis Armstrong. On THE BACH OF ROCK, Longhair bounces buoyantly through old favorites while adding some new songs into the mix. Fess’s infectious vocals, jaunty ivory-tickling, and funky groove provide the ultimate soundtrack to the Crescent City and show exactly why the city has the reputation that it does. This superb two-disc set features the Professor’s signature style--a stomping left-hand bass and a right hand that flies all over the place--on classics such as “Tipitina,” “Junco Partner,” and “Ball the Wall.” It begins in the early ’50s, when ‘Fess called his band Roy Byrd & His Blues Jumpers, and ends in the ’70s with an incredible live version of “Big Chief” and “Tipitina.”
“It’s echoed in my songs, whether you could hear it or not - as for the licks themselves, but my heart always have some Professor Longhair in it, in probably everything I do.”—ALLEN TOUSSAINT “Fess put funk into music ... Longhair’s thing had a direct bearing I’d say on a large portion of the funk music that evolved in New Orleans.”—DR. JOHN “He had this great…rolling piano style. And he was singing this song called ‘Tipitina’, which is like one of his hits. I just loved the style so much that I composed something called ‘My Carnival’ basically ripped him off.”—PAUL McCARTNEY RELEASE DATE: 5/8/20 ARTIST: PROFESSOR LONGHAIR TITLE: THE BACH OF ROCK CATALOG: CD-SBR-7978 CD CONFIGURATION: 2 CD FOLDER UPC: 708535797821 BOX LOX: 30 UNITS GENRE: R&B/FUNK

OVERVIEW Like generations of Puerto Ricans before them, Raquel Berríos and Luis Alfredo Del Valle of experimental pop duo Buscabulla moved to the mainland United States to hustle for their dreams, but a longing for their island ran deep, never escaping their thoughts during the decade they resided there. After Hurricane María, the band moved home to Puerto Rico from Brooklyn to help rebuild the community, raise their daughter, and record their debut full length album.
Regresa was recorded in its entirety in Raquel and Luis Alfredo’s home studio in Puerto Rico, and is an emotional roller coaster in which they face and ponder the issues affecting them and Puerto Rican society at large: the frustration at the lack of opportunities for locals while tax breaks lure rich investors, self-doubt and anxiety, even the rise of religious fanaticism. For the finishing touches, the band worked with Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift, MGMT, Solange, Blood Orange, etc.) who contributed additional production and mixed the album. They also enlisted their dear friend Helado Negro to contribute an orchestral arrangement for "Club Tú y Yo" as well as songwriting contributions on “Mío” and “Volta” from Nick Hakim. Full of angst and an underlying sense of loss, Regresa -- which means “return” or “to come back” -- is a bittersweet, introspective, eye-opening journey. “The album reflects the joys of being back but it’s also melancholic,” says Raquel. “You feel like a stranger in your own home because the island is going through very hard, weird times. Most people our age have fled. We have also changed after being away for so long.” Buscabulla ultimately calls for self-reflection, awakening and perseverance in the midst of an uncertain future. Says Raquel, “Regresa is about self-acceptance of oneself with all our imperfections, and the acceptance of coming back home, with all its flaws.”

Just say “Spring ‘77” to any Dick’s Picks Vol. 29 Presents Two Shows Deadhead you know—chances from the Hallowed Spring ’77 Tour in are a big smile will steal across his Support of the Forthcoming Terrapin or her face. That’s because of all Station Album the road trips in the Dead’s long history, arguably the one that saw The Only Six-CD Set in the Series (There the most consistently high level Isn’t Even a Five-CD Set) of playing was the Spring ’77 tour the band undertook in support of Two Complete Shows (Minus One Encore) its forthcoming Terrapin Station Plus Some Unbilled Bonus Tracks album. And that’s why, out of the 36 volumes in the Dick’s Picks Features a Mammoth Medley of “Estimated series, only one, this one, is a 6-CD Prophet”/“He’s Gone”/“Drums”/“The set (there isn’t even a 5-CD set)! But the Lakeland show just 4-CD Set Offers Two Complete Shows from may take the cake—two medleys, a breathtaking “Scarlet Begonias”/”Fire Their Historic Pairing with The Who as Part on the Mountain” and a jaw-dropping “Estimated Prophet”/”He’s of Bill Graham’s Day on the Green Concerts Gone”/”Drums”/”The Other One”/”Comes a Time”/”St. Stephen”/”Not Fade Away”/”St. Stephen”/”One More Saturday Night,” are the icing. STREET DATE: MAY 8, 2020 Fresh from a year-and-a-half touring hiatus, and back to full, two-drummer strength, the Dead opened for The Who as part of Bill Graham’s historic Day on the Green concerts in 1976. This 4-disc set—which is among the cleanest soundboard recordings in the entire series—captures both dates in their entirety, and features one of the most monumental medleys (and that’s sayin’ something!) in band history with a 60-minute, 10-song journey through “St. Stephen”/”Not Fade Away”/”St. Stephen”/”Help on the Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Drums”/”Samson and Delilah”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower”/”One More Saturday Night” on the first day. Day two offers excellent takes on two solo Garcia favorites, “Might as Well” and “The Wheel,” that were new to the concert repertoire and a particularly fine “Ramble on Rose.” Bill Graham had honored the Dead by selecting them to close the year’s stellar series of Day on the Green concerts, and that—perhaps coupled with the presence of formidable coheadliners The Who—sparked some of the band’s finest performances of the period.

BOB WILLS AND HIS TEXAS PLAYBOYS
Riding Your Way—The Lost Transcriptions for Tiffany Music, 1946-1947 (2-CD Set) SELLING POINTS
STREET DATE: MAY 8, 2020
• The Tiffany Transcriptions Are Generally Recognized as the Greatest—and Rarest—Recordings by the King of Western Swing, Bob Wills
This 2-CD, 50-track set from Real Gone Music offers folks a chance to own some of the most revered—and rare—recordings in the history of American music. In 1946 and 1947, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys cut nearly 400 full songs for Tiffany Music, Inc., recordings that came to be known as the Tiffany Transcriptions. These recordings were distributed only to radio stations on 16-inch transcription discs, and were intended for airplay as part of a syndicated radio show featuring Wills and the Playboys. However, the transcriptions proved to be a financial failure, and Tiffany Music, Inc. folded by the end of the ‘40s, seemingly relegating the Tiffany Transcriptions to obscurity (and leaving over 200 songs in the can). But that was not the end of the story. The Tiffany Transcriptions were unlike anything else in the King of Western Swing’s discography. Typically recorded on a Monday in between tours, they usually consisted of on-the-spot arrangements of everything from Wills hits to western swing standards to sentimental ballads to blues and hot swing instrumentals, and the 16”, 33 1/3 rpm recording format allowed some of the songs to be longer than the normal, three-minute limitation of the 10-inch, 78 rpm commercial records of the day. This meant that Wills and his incredible band— with the great Tommy Duncan on vocals—had a chance to stretch out and have fun with the material. The result: the Tiffany Transcriptions are generally regarded as the best recordings Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys ever made. For decades, the Tiffany Transcriptions were more legend than fact. Finally, in the early ‘80s, Kaleidoscope Records began releasing a series of vinyl volumes of the Tiffany Transcriptions, followed by a CD release on Kaleidoscope and Rhino Records in the ‘90s. To date, however, less than half of the songs recorded by Wills and the Playboys have seen the light of day since the original transcription pressings of the ‘40s. Now, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys: Riding Your Way—The Lost Transcriptions for Tiffany Music, 1946-1947 presents 50 of those long-lost transcription sides—20 of them never released even on transcription disc— inside a package worthy of the material, a 6-panel DVD-style digipak featuring photos and memorabilia from the collection of Kaleidoscope Records cofounder Tom Diamant. The 20-page, DVD-sized booklet includes notes featuring quotes from the original Playboys by Western Swing expert Cary Ginell and a complete discography of the Tiffany recordings. The recordings are mastered by Bob Fisher from recently discovered tapes to preserve their vintage sonic vibrancy while eliminating excess background surface noise. It’s a treasure trove from one of the most compelling and unique bandleaders—and bands—in the history of American music.

The highwire balancing act of all these wildly moving parts has always been Fire-Toolz’s calling card.” - Pitchfork “Over the course of a Fire-Toolz track, calming New Age vistas suddenly descend into cathartic black metal screeching, and brain-melting electronic distortions give way to up-close recordings of her cats meowing.” - Bandcamp “... from speed-demon techno to dewy laptop ambient, icy jazz samples, the colorful clicks and pings of online messenger services, mathy nu-nu-metal riffing, and well, just about anything else, swirled together in a loopy collage.” - Vice

Angel Marcloid’s music under the name Fire-Toolz presents a consciousness striving for radical self-expression. While each moniker that Marcloid inhabits offers one entry point into a hydra-headed catalog characterized by hyper-progressive songwriting and structural fragmentation, Fire-Toolz serves as a home for the most dense and combinatory experiments, all of which approach the domain of collage-like electronic production. This body of work stands as a complement to the instrumental jazz fusion of Nonlocal Forecast, and the sample-transmuting hypnosis of MindSpring Memories, along with an untold number of Marcloid’s smaller and one-off projects. Rainbow Bridge, the third Fire-Toolz full-length to appear on Hausu Mountain, follows Skinless X-1 (HAUSMO73, 2018) and Drip Mental (HAUSMO55, 2017), along with 2019’s Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace) and 2017’s Interbeing. The album continues Marcloid’s exploration of ever more high-definition production techniques and rapidly shifting compositional architectures in order to give life to one of her most personal and pointedly emotional thematic programs to date. More than any previous Fire-Toolz work, Rainbow Bridge hones in on the power of novel juxtaposition. If passages of prog synth intricacy, scream-soaked deathcore, and free-form textural sculpture might seem to be signifiers that land far from each other on a vast 3D plane, Marcloid weaves them into some coherent language that carries its own sinuous pace and unlikely logic. Against fantasy-like visions of mutating electronic production, weighted thick with ballistic drum programming and ornate keyboard harmonies, FireToolz maintains a consistent vocal palette of high-pitched, distorted shrieks. Though firmly rooted in this harsh style, Marcloid’s role as a vocalist shifts between the realms of the caterwauling metal band front-person, the purveyor of raw syllabic grit in a field of amorphous electronics, or the wailing intruder in an otherwise glistening sea of elegant melody and smooth post-muzak groove. Further smashing the notion of the one-person “band” to even tinier shards, the manifold musical tutelages that Marcloid has worked through pop into the spotlight whenever necessary. The synth tone scientist, the prog drummer, the noise collage miscreant, the soaring guitar solo shredder — instead of all of these personas “becoming one,” Rainbow Bridge places them in a state of constant flux and recombination, of one becoming many at any given moment. While Rainbow Bridge’s title hearkens back to the name of Marcloid’s now defunct omni-noise tape label, its presence here returns to its semantic origin as a symbol for the staircase that our beloved pets take to the afterlife. Fire-Toolz draws on the death of companions, specifically the dearly departed cat Breakfast, to center on concepts of mortality, compassion, grief, and the capacity that the human being has for love and meaningful connection within its own infinite depth. The album draws power from an awareness of death, and acknowledges the insights and transformative challenges that bloom from its proximity. Rainbow Bridge’s continually morphing compositions embody a practice charged with the spectre of death and planted within the primordial ground into which the seeds of being itself are sown. No force other than pure adoration could animate the creation of such wide-branching music saturated with sophisticated details and surprising narrative upheavals. Fire-Toolz’s mosaic outpouring of ideas and emotions blossoms into existence in musical forms that infuse a gnarled sense of grandeur into baroque manifestations of beauty and chaos. In tribute to a loved one, Marcloid seeks to match the complexity of their shared experience, while gesturing toward the inscrutability of what waits beyond this life.
The title of this record was inspired by our circumstance. Please Advise is a liminal work. A document of a time of uncertainty and fragmentation. I'm proud of this record, but it's not perfect. I will go one step further: I'm proud of this record because it's not perfect. All I wanna do is keep moving. Please Advise meets this criterion. For me, at least. I hope people find it valuable.
We named our record PLEASE ADVISE after producer Teo Macero’s famous 1969 memo to Columbia Records about Miles Davis (“Miles just called and said he wants this album to be titled BITCHES BREW. Please advise.”) It’s darkly funny to us now, but I bet it wasn’t funny to Teo then. I find that memo to be encouraging. Even in working with an artist as brilliant and masterful as Miles Davis, there were moments of uncertainty and maybe even panic. Like “What is this motherfucker doing?” panic. There’s probably no aesthetic connection between Miles Davis and Beauty Pill, but that memo makes me feel better about my own path. It’s okay if sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s okay if sometimes you don’t know what I’m doing either. The paradox of any artist’s life is you need to cultivate confidence AND humility to survive.

‘GNAWA ELECTRIC LAUNE’ is the magical collaboration between Moroccan Gnawa-master (maâlem) Rabii Harnoune and Frankfurt electronic producer V.B.Kühl. Recorded at Achim Sauer’s 7V-Studio, collectively Rabii Harnoune & V.B. Kühl have produced an LP which represents entirely new territory, building a bridge from old to new, from Africa to Europe, and from to person to person. This melange of traditional North African Gnawa music and modern club sounds results in a fascinating debut, cross-cultural friction which is electric and otherworldly. “Gnawa music was exclusively played by families whose parents came from Sub-Saharan or Central African tribes to Morocco in colonial times” Rabii explains, “it was rare to be able to listen to Gnawa music on radio, so I started to collect rare live recordings”. Rabii’s mastery at the Guembri, a three-string lute and Gnawa singing (a central aspect to the cul ture), would lead him to play world-class festivals in Essaouira, Fes, Marrakesh, and Casablanca – all spiritual centres for the genre. V.B.Kühl realised his own musical vision and ambition when he inherited his first ghettoblaster (boombox) and bought a four-track recorder: “rhythm is deep in me, and although music is not my profession, the passion never stopped”.

Supported by the likes of Pedo Knopp (Analog Africa), Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Dom Servini (Soho Radio) and Moroccan stations such as Medi1 Radio, ChadaFM and Radio Aswat, Rabii Harnoune & V.B.Kühl continue the legacy of Jimi Hendrix, Robert Plant, Randy Weston and more recently Bonobo, Floating Points and James Holden – in bridging together two different worlds, of Gnawa and Western musicians. V.B.Kühl caught the attention of DJ Shadow with two stellar remixes, which would later lead to commissioned remixes by Tru Thoughts for acts such as Anchorsong and Lakuta. V.B.Kühl and album co-producer Achim Sauer founded t&TT together, a DIY label that was used as a vehicle to release both artist solo projects. A1 Forest A2 Yomali A3 Light Out Night On

asaki Batoh’s solo career continues to rise up with his 5th solo album, and second in the last two years, Smile Jesus Loves YOU. As long time listeners of Ghost and The Silence are well aware, Batoh’s music is of the world and for the world . . . it exists as part of the conundrum of the world, for us to hear and form thought or feeling. We have no way of knowing it, other than to listen. The defiance of a fixed notion in Batoh’s world and music is made clear, as with the ambiguities of last year’s mortality meditation Nowhere, by the title of his new album. This shouldn’t be taken at face value. It might be a politically bitter statement. It might not be political at all, in this time of insane corrupt leaders who clearly believe in nothing except what they can use. It is a question for anyone who believes, or doesn’t believe. Listeners must come up with their own understanding, based on their own sentiment and where they find themselves in their evolving form. Following the mostly solitary activity of making Nowhere, Batoh has invited several guests to play with him for parts of Smile Jesus Loves YOU. Like family members, collaborators from The Silence and Ghost make guest appearances, including, for two songs, ex-Ghost and legendary percussionist Hiroyuki Usui (Fushitsusha). For the journey of this new album, Batoh takes us a great distance, singing in Japanese, English, Spanish and Latin, including an amazing cover of one of his heroes, Atahualpa Yupanqui, with lyrics translated from Spanish to Japanese, giving them a haiku-like feeling. Batoh plays a variety of stringed instruments throughout, as well as mellotron and shanai, supported at times by the playing of others on flute, piano, lap steel, saxophone, contra bass and drums. The songs expand amoebically, with music styles of the world shifting and merging to form their whole. Through phases of dark and light, including some new musical discoveries in Batoh’s world, we travel through the multipart epic title track to salvation. This world is a difficult place, whether or not the gods will come to save us, but there is a happy ending for us if we accept and make it so. As with all of Batoh’s recent releases, Smile Jesus Loves YOU is a 100% analogue recording of absolutely human playing, with no digital copying and pasting. This allows us to hear and feel the air around the recording as if it is our own. And we do! DRAG CITY P. O. BOX 476867 CHICAGO, IL 60647 • (312) 455-1015 sales@dragcity.com

Shepparton Airplane is a four-piece post-punk rock band from Melbourne, Australia comprising members of Australian folk heroes The Peep Tempel and Graveyard Train. Sharks their third album, was recorded and mixed at Sing Sing Recording Studios by Anna Laverty (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Courtney Barnett, Florence + The Machine & The Peep Tempel) and mastered by Mikey Young. In its 38-odd minutes, the album sees the band diving deeper into shoegaze/noise/psych/punk territory, but manages to find more breathing space than their first two albums. Whilst the Spiritualized/Husker Du/Sonic Youth influences jump out more, there are Television-esque jams and Stooges/MC5-style wig outs, all the while maintaining an undeniable Australian aesthetic.

TOM PRINCIPATO They Tell Me I Had A Good Time
They Tell Me I had A Good Time! follows guitarist and Indie Record Co. owner Tom Principato on his travels and encounters throughout touring and the “Music Business”; and seeing and being inspired by Blues guitar legends B.B.King & Albert King at the legendary Cellar Door night club in Washington, D.C. in the late 1960’s, his early days in Boston with the band Powerhouse. and includes some great road stories from touring in the USA; encounters with Freddie King, Dr. John, NRBQ, Frank Zappa, Joe Pass and Big Mama Thornton, as well as stories of European concerts where he shares the bill with guitar icon Jeff Beck, Blues Piano legend Champion Jack Dupree, a flight with soul singer legend Wilson Picket, and a career high appearance at the Montreux Jazz festival. Included are photos and anecdotes about his days playing with Washington, DC guitar legend Danny Gatton and “Blazing Telecasters”, Roy Buchanan, and jamming with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Paul Butterfield, Wayne Jackson, the Memphis Horns, Chuck Leavell, and Lonnie Mack. It’s a “who’s who” and a “what’s what” of guitar anecdotes, jokes, stories and schtick, from the eyes of the player as well as a music fan, all told in a conversational style that feels like you might be sitting at a bar having a beer with Tom while he’s telling his stories. Tom’s mixture of humor, honesty and humility make for a great read told by an independent niche artist who managed to “survive” over 50 years in the “Music Business” and live his dream. HIGHLIGHTS 7th album for worriedaboutsatan
Time Lapse is the 7th proper album from Bradford UK based worriedaboutsatan and third since the project has returned into a solo effort by Gavin Miller. Time Lapse is also the project's first album for North American emotional electronics stable n5MD. For well over a decade, worriedaboutsatan has effortlessly nurtured a muzzled amalgamation of ambient, techno, and post-rock. The project is a go-to for its adaptation of dark, slow-churning, humanistic techno. Labyrinthine guitars, swelling 303s, and deep pulsing 808s all are utilized in the satan arsenal to realize some of the murkiest forward-moving soundscapes of the last decade. Time Lapse is quintessential worriedaboutsatan, filled with sprawling slow-burn arrangements bathed in velvety reverb tails. A must for fans of artists such as GAS, Explosions in the Sky, or Bioshpere's earlier deep works. Time Lapse is out May 1st on 180 gram transparent forest green vinyl and compact disc.
