CATE LE BON - “MUG MUSEUM” Wichita Recordings (2013) Truly a breakout record for Cate Le Bon, who has gone on to release her follow-up albums through Drag City and more recently Mexican Summer. I first heard about this album through King Gizzard’s “What’s In My Bag” episode at Amoeba. Filled with sparse, but solid Beatle-esque arrangements and a wholly “European” light-rock vibe, à la the 60’s being reinterpreted through the 70s (plus some truly GREAT songs). If you know Cate Le Bon through her work with other projects (Drinks, Neon Neon), this release is definitely worth checking out.

Steep Canyon Rangers are Asheville, North Carolina’s GRAMMY® winners, perennial Billboard chart-toppers, and frequent collaborators of the renowned banjoist (and occasional comedian) Steve Martin. The Rangers can now add their hometown Asheville Symphony to their long list of musical companions on the new album Be Still Moses. Each track on Be Still Moses features the Rangers and Symphony breathing new life into signature Steep Canyon Rangers songs through newly inspired orchestral arrangements.

LIVING IN THE SHADOWS LIVING IN THE SHADOWS is powerhouse guitarist Tyler Morris’ second Vizztone release in the Blues/Rock genre, and his fourth release in total.

LIVING IN THE SHADOWS was produced by Mike Zito, who says, “Tyler’s depth of musical knowledge knows no bounds and he is just coming into his own voice. He will help bring back the glory of Electric Guitar to the masses.” Guests on this album include Blues legends Ronnie Earl, Joe Louis Walker and STREET Mike Zito, as well as acclaimed vocalist Amanda Fish, who featured Tyler on her Blues Music Award-winning album last year.

This release marks Morris’ debut as lead singer on the majority of the songs. Joe Louis Walker was a guest on Morris’ previous release, NEXT IN LINE, which charted at #8 on Billboard’s National Blues Charts. Sirius XM’s B.B. King’s Bluesville picked up on Morris’ rendition of “Willie the Wimp” with Walker on vocals, and the single was in the top 10 on Sirius XM for multiple consecutive weeks.

On this release, Morris channels his evolving list of influences into his own unique songwriting style and pays homage to some of his heroes through collaborations with his guest artists.

IN HIS SHORT CAREER PHIL SEYMOUR was hailed by Shelter Records founders Leon Russell and Denny Cordell, received production offers from Phil Spector, played with Tom Petty, Chris Spedding, the Textones, Roy Orbison and Del Shannon, and counted among his friends and fans people from the worlds of power pop, roots rock, New Wave and indie Rock.

With kindred spirit Dwight Twilley, Phil forged a determination to bring back melodic pop songs. They spent several years mastering harmony, piano, guitar, drums and the art of crafting a high-quality song, building a home studio where they spent endless hours recording under the name Oister. In 1974 they set off for Los Angeles and renamed themselves the Dwight Twilley Band. Soon they were in the US Top 20 with ‘I’m On Fire’, but frustrations followed as Shelter dealt with financial difficulties, and Phil decided to go solo. Initially he struggled to find a foothold but once the new wave hit America, the Phil Seymour Band stormed Hollywood and became one of the hottest acts on the circuit. Signed to Neil Bogart’s Boardwalk label, by 1981 Phil was at #22 on Billboard’s Hot 100 with the self-penned classic ‘Precious To Me’. More terrific releases followed until his untimely death from cancer. After including a track on Houndstooth’s 2018 comp ‘IDDK’ he delivers an album inspired by old prog rock album covers, a new-found love of plants and gardening, and science fiction literature. The work is awash in earthy psychedelia; tracks shimmer with the sounds of birdsong, natural percussion and visions of a future in which nature has taken back an artificial world. The abundance of natural influences does not detract from Hodge’s ability to write solid dance floor rhythms however. On the soaring lead track, ‘Ghost of Akina’, he performs unspooling frenetic breaks from a dreamlike stance.

ive years after Tangier Sessions, Sir Richard Bishop, we presume, is back from his travels around the world. With Oneiric Formulary, he’s dug deeper into his bag of extra-musical gestures from the eternal and unknowable, along with a few sounds we might recognize, all transmuted for our mortal ears’ enjoyment.

The last couple of Sir Richard Bishop releases on Drag City were genre exercises of sorts — The Freak of Araby explored the musical legacy of late Egyptian guitarist Omar Khorshid while Tangier Sessions explored the sound of an obscure 19th century guitar that Rick had acquired from a mysterious Swiss luthier.

The title Oneiric Formulary, may sit contrarily on the tongue — but we may refer Also available on Drag City from Sir Richard Bishop:

to it as representing “a collection of dream states” — which means we like it! With such a lofty goal in mind and at his fingertips, Sir Rick returns to the approach of his DC debut, Polytheistic Fragments — a different sound, a different instrument, for nearly every track, drawing from the music of all nations, including and especially that infamous republic with only one person on the census roll (initials SRB). It’s got mad variety, the kind you don’t see much of anymore — an Ed Sullivan kind of evening out, with some spinning plates, dancing mice, and of course, an appearance from Zippy the Chimp.

What it means is that when you drop the needle/raise the laser/press the head to tape/ or do whatever happens when you stream it, you’ve got sounds that don’t sound at first like

guitars — because they’re not! Then you’ve got sounds that sound initially like guitars — because they are! Sir Richard found joy in not only finding unlikely sounds, but also writing a fake jingle, soundtracking an unreleased film, reflecting on Southern origins, going concrète (Beatles-style!), using computers (Sir Rick, no!), and accidentally juxtaposing Frippian electric guitar drone against the grit of ol’ school acoustic guitar while thinking of sci-fi, as well as revisiting (t)rusty old forms such as Americana, classical, gypsy and raga. It’s all trotted out to phantasmic effect, as it brings to us with the freshness, the roar of the old crowd as they see, smell and hear the greatest show on earth. What a night! KLÔ PELGAG is a renowned singer-songwriter who shares her quirky, authentic world with the public. After putting out an independent EP, she released her debut LP, L’alchimie des monstres in 2013 and won several awards, including Best New Artist at the Gala de l’ADISQ in 2014, the Prix Barbara of the French Culture Minister, the Grand Prix de la Francophonie of l’Académie Charles Cros, the Prix Miroir Célébration de la langue française at Festival d’été de Québec, as well as the Prix Rapsat-Lelièvre. She toured several francophone countries to present the songs of that album, giving more than 200 concerts in Quebec, Belgium, France and Switzerland. Her sophomore effort, 2016’s L’étoile thoracique was a massive success in Quebec. She won four Félix awards at the Gala de l’ADISQ in 2017: Alternative Album of the Year, Album of the Year – Critics’ Choice, Singer-Songwriter of the Year, and Record Producer of the Year. The album made the long list of the Polaris Music Prize in 2017, and was nominated at the JUNO Awards the following year. Additionally, she won the prestigious Prix Félix-Leclerc, as well as the Prix de la chanson SOCAN for her song “Ferrofluides-fleurs”. She also presented her first concert in Japan. In 2018, she was crowned Female Artist of the Year at the Gala de l’ADISQ. Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is her third album that will come out April 17 2020 via Secret City Records.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs is a place that exists geographically, but it’s also a place that exists in my mind. When I was a child, we’d pass by the sign announcing the village while travelling from SainteAnne-des-Monts to Rivière-Ouelle in Quebec. Every time I saw it, I averted my eyes and shivered in horror. That name terrified me. I imagined a dying village with sad houses, empty streets and creaky chairs still rocking with the memory of deserters.

And now, after many years of overwork, I found myself exactly in that place. In the middle of all my anxieties, not knowing anymore who I was, taking hits and hating myself more than anyone else. A thick fog settled in my head, with black, opaque skies. I now lived on this island that I built or imagined on my own.

Then in August 2019, while I was starting to get my bearings back, I decided to visit Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs, the village. The initial thing I discovered was quite meaningful: it’s actually an island.

I took the ferry and arrived in an idyllic place. A village with dirt roads and no more than 35 inhabitants, whose souls haven’t been perverted or spoiled by mankind. A village with no grocery store or gas station. A superb place. With trees and flowers, a lighthouse, colourful wooden houses, and fish whose flesh was so pure it went beyond my definition of the colour “pink.”

Slowly, I went through the village I imagined as a child, and I hope to never go back there. Now, I’ll go to the real Notre-Dame-desSept-Douleurs, where I’ll eat fish that smells like the river and whose colour bemuses me.

After releasing their debut album of unique Nordic electronic sounds in late 2014, Kiasmos – made up of Ólafur Arnalds and Janus Rasmussen – return with a special 3-track EP featuring album highlight Looped and remixes of album tracks Held and Burnt.

Made in Ólafur’s newly build studio in Reykjavík, Iceland, the title track ‘Looped’ was recorded using acoustic instruments next to a variety of synthesizers, drum machines and tape delays. It also features Ólafur performing on the grand piano, producing an ambient, textured sound, which makes it a perfect home listen and equally danceable tune.

UK electronic producer Dauwd (Kompakt/Ghostly), who Kiasmos specially selected to perform at their sold out London album release show as well as remix their track, has crafted a chilled club version of Held. Whilst Ukrainian pianist and fellow Erased Tapes artist Lubomyr Melnyk has created a unique reinterpretation of Burnt in his signature Continuous Music mode, performed on two pianos.

The parts had so much texture and warmth that working with them in my own space was quite inspiring. I tried to respond impulsively to the parts and allow anything to happen. Pakistani-American avant-composer and drummer from the cult experimental acoustic trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi has announced a new record titled Beta to be released as a limited edition on clear vinyl on April 17.

Meant as a sister release to last year’s acclaimed six-part modular synth suite Teenages, Beta is a series of experiments chronicling Naqvi’s understanding of writing for this type of instrument and the growth of the instrument itself.

“Beta is a prequel to the story of Teenages. At the time I had the most basic elements of a modular synthesizer- one oscillator and a random voltage generator which is a module that releases sporadic currents through the system. Ironically, this component provided a lot of warmth and humanness to the music, a kind of fallibility. I fed simple melodic ideas and rhythmic patterns into this bare bones setup and observed the responses, while occasionally guiding the music in other directions. It was like a diagnostic test. At the time I felt that this music was underdeveloped but listening back, I think the Beta tracks add an interesting dimension to the entire Teenages arc.They’re the zygotes.” — Qasim Naqvi The B side of Beta is a live performance of the track Teenages, which was recorded at the first Erased Tapes x LCO: Purcell Session at Southbank Centre, London in February 2019. “I had performed this work just a couple of times and this particular one was special. There were microphones up everywhere and you could hear the room bleeding into the sound of the synthesizer” says Qasim of the performance.

If Teenages captured the sound of electronics living, breathing and mutating of their own accord, Beta rather describes the moment they came to life.

PATRICE RUSHEN - POSH The landmark 1980 album, representing a period of consolidation for Patrice Rushen. Her studio reputation as a go-to pianist and arranger among other artists and musicians was well established and was growing exponentially. Although never originally planning a career as a solo artist, she had built this side of her work through three Prestige albums and two sophisticated soul and disco albums for Elektra, ‘Patrice’ and ‘Pizzazz’. “I was lucky to have a group of musicians that I knew well by the time of these recording sessions,” remembers Patrice. “I had my pick of really incredible players because of all of the studio work I was doing. I also played with Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason and others almost on a weekly basis at The Baked Potato club in L.A.” Tracks include the singles ‘Don’t Blame Me’, ‘Look Up!’ and ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. “’Never Gonna Give You Up’ came out of playing ideas at home. Bassist Freddie Washington was living with my family while he tried to get a foothold in L.A.’s music scene and that groove came out of those jams. With ‘The Dream’, I had been listening to Minnie Riperton’s ‘Come To My Garden’, one of my favourite albums.

With Charles Stepney’s arrangements, I saw that he didn’t have to use large instrumentation to be orchestral in his approach. So, ‘The Dream’ was a homage to that kind of writing.”

“After ‘Posh’, we had a much better idea from the performance side what was important in our music and that informed my next album, ‘Straight From The Heart’. We took a little break after ‘Posh’ was released, although I was still writing and working regularly on scores for film and TV. That had always been my main focus in my music.”

What is your go-to destination for food (while touring or otherwise)?

When I’m on tour in the US, depending on the location, I’m usually looking for immigrant run establishments that serve their communities. It’s truly a beautiful way to experience the country because there’s so much culinary diversity here.

Describe your music as an outrageous new potato chip flavor.

Where do you hail from geographically? How has this area impacted or affected your music?

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, but have now spent 16 years living in the US (NJ, NY, TX). Growing up in such culturally different places made it really difficult for me to define my own identity artistically. It wasn’t until recently that I realized how being divorced from any specific musical lineage gives me more unburdened creative freedom to find my own voice.

How did you start making music?

I started taking classical piano lessons when I was 6 and classical percussion lessons when I was 9. The obsession grew from there.

Describe your music to a new fan in five words or less.

Lush, Textured, Futuristic, Ancient, Pop. How would you describe the evolution of your sound up to now?

My first EP, Spiritual Leader, was more improvisational and experimental in nature, and very minimal and simple. Belonging is more sonically adventurous and sophisticated, while also being more structured and poppy. I think the new album also has more to dig into emotionally.

If you had to describe your music without using typical genre classifications, how would you?

An alien landscape with dense and rich vegetation.

What would your “undercover” or alternative band or artist name be if you couldn’t use your current name?

Digestif.

What do you do for fun when you’re not making music?

I love cooking and finding interesting places to eat. I also enjoy art, comedy, nature and television shows.

What was the last piece of music you either bought or consumed?

I just picked up three records from Stones Throw in LA—Black Taffy’s Elder Mantis, Madvillainy instrumentals, and Gabriel Garzon Montano’s Jardin.

Who or what influences your sound the most?

I’ve spent a majority of my musical career as a drummer in bands or as a hired gun. I always approach each project by immersing myself in its world, and soaking up the respective aesthetic values. As a result, my own music is very influenced by my collaborations. In general, I find that I am most inspired and excited when I’m making music that is in pursuit of something completely new, but still has the ability to connect with people emotionally. Here’s a list of the artists and bands that have really shaped what I like and how I make my music- Son Lux, Rafiq Bhatia, Moses Sumney, Kazu Makino, Landlady, Body Language, Matthew Dear.

If you could collaborate with any other artist or musician, who would it be and why?

It would be a dream to collaborate with Björk. Her music is at the pinnacle of being simultaneously challenging and deeply emotional. I’m quite obsessed with her vocal phrasing and it has actually influenced my drumming quite a bit. I’d be very interested in making music with her that frames her phrasing as the key rhythmic elements, rather than making a beat that she sings over.

Describe your live show: Do you have touring members? Electric or acoustic? Do you have a strict setlist or do you keep it loose?

My live show is typically a solo performance. I have various instruments that all handle expressing samples in different ways, with the focal point being an electronic drum kit. It’s a bit disorienting because they look like regular drums, but I could be using it to play anything ranging from Guzheng, to synths to flutes. I also have a set up of 7 lights that I control with my sample based instruments.

Do you have a favorite song or track of yours to play or perform in a live setting? Or is there one that was particularly fun to record?

There’s a song on my album that’s only a minute long called Swarm. It’s basically an interlude of me improvising on a very involved sample based instrument that I designed in Sunhouse’s Sensory Percussion. When I play it live, it’s completely free and very liberating.

What is something you wish your fans and followers knew about you?

I’m a pretty good belly dancer.

Who is one other artist or band you feel should be getting more attention for their work?

Sooo many- mmph, Like A Villain, Danke, Buke and Gase, Jon Bap, Nnamdi, Sen Morimoto… I could go on.

Jaga Jazzist return with new album “Pyramid”, where the legendary Norwegian eight-piece take a deep dive into post-rock, jazz and psychedelia influences. It’s their first album since 2015’s “Starfire”, their ninth album in a career now spanning four decades, but it marks the group’s debut on Brainfeeder, the LA-based imprint curated by Flying Lotus. On “Pyramid”, Jaga Jazzist have crafted a suitably cosmic sound to match their new label home, all the while nodding to forebears spanning from Fela Kuti to cult Japanese composer Isao Tomita. BRAIDS, comprised of Raphaelle Standell-Preston, Austin Tufts and Taylor Smith, are a Montreal-based three-piece. Formed in 2007 in Alberta, they have solidified a decade-long reputation for their musical ingenuity and established themselves as one of Canada’s most acclaimed art rock bands. OVERVIEW Lorenzo Senni was never a raver. Growing up in Rimini, the young artist was fascinated by dance culture as he witnessed close friends interact with a neon-hued chemical world that remained at odds with his own. He inhabited the local straight edge hardcore punk scene, a teenage drummer who absorbed the golden age of trance and gabber anecdotally. Senni was a rave voyeur, studying hedonism from a distance, fascinated by its maximalist, expressive charm.

With “Scacco Matto”, Senni wanted to see how far he could push these ideas. The title means “check mate” in Italian, and references the constant chess game Senni plays with himself when writing music. “There is a move and a countermove,” he explains. “I always need something that limits the emotional elements of my tracks. That often means just not having something that you usually expect.” And unexpected elements are littered throughout the album, from opening track ‘Discipline of Enthusiasm’ with its dramatic orchestral elements that counter elastic rave bleeps, to the innocent organ intro on ‘Wasting Time Writing Lorenzo Senni Songs’ that slowly erupts into what may as well be a children’s TV theme.

On May 27, 1957 Ravi Shankar (sitar), Chatur Lal (tabla) and Nodu Mallick (tanpura) performed in Amsterdam at the Concertgebouw. It was Shankar’s first appearance as a solo artist in The Netherlands. Though there is no audio of that concert, we are lucky to have this music, recorded earlier in the day at the Radio Netherlands studios in Hilversum as well as an interview with Ravi Shankar, done in both Hindi and English, recorded at a museum in Leiden. As a rare glimpse into Ravi Shankar’s early east-west travels, this installment of the Nine Decades series documents the excitement with which the western and eastern worlds greeted each other through the melodies, improvisations, and rhythmic cycles of Indian classical music.

Pale Lights are Phil Sutton, Lisa Goldstein, Maria Pace, Andy Adler, and Suzanne Nienaber. Lead singer and songwriter Sutton was a founding member of Comet Gain, and has played with a number of groups over the years, mostly drumming for the likes of Velocette, The Soft City, The Projects, Kicker, and Cinema Red and Blue. Across two albums and a clutch of in-demand singles the band has established themselves as exemplary exponents of a classic style of pop that aligns with them groups like Felt, The Go-Betweens, and just about all of the best bands from the Flying Nun and Creation catalogs. “You And I" is Pale Lights' contribution to our SLR30 Singles Series and it's a lovely way to spend three minutes and twelve seconds. Sporting an indelible melody and some very fine guitar strum 'n' jangle, it is the sort of tune that 7" singles were invented. By the time Gary Olson's trumpet comes in at the mid-way point you know that you're in the presence of greatness.

Odd Hope is the home recording project of Tim Tinderholt. Literally holed-up in his Oakland garage with worn copies of 'Alien Lanes & 'Chairs Missing,' he kills time recording on the classic, archaic Bay Area-favorite recording device the Tascam 388. Tim has experimented with various jangle/punk bands for years and now with Odd Hope he's venturing from the garage to share his sharp DIY pop with the world. Following a well-received single and LP on the excellent Fruits & Flowers label, Odd Hope are now releasing this ace single as part of our Slumberland Records SLR30 Singles Series. "All The Things" evokes early Television Personalities punch, filtered through a Ray Daviesstyle croon and leavened with a distinct bit of Flying Nun flavor. It's perfect pop, accomplishing more in its brisk two minutes than a lot of songs can manage in twice the time. On the other side we find "What's Your Part Of It?" -- a jangly rocker with cutting melodies and a measured lyricism that further marks Odd Hope as a project to keep a close eye (and ears) on.

RID, the experimental trio of Matt Nelson (Battle Trance; Elder Ones) on saxophone, Tim Dahl (Child Abuse; Lydia Lunch Retrovirus) on bass, and Nick Podgurski (New Firmament; Feast of the Epiphany) on drums, have returned to NNA Tapes for the release of their colossal sophomore album, Decomposing Force.

Recorded live in one room with no overdubs and mixed to 1/2 inch tape, GRID builds off of their earth-rattling self-titled debut. Decomposing Force relies on the composite sound of Nelson, Dahl, and Podgurski interacting and reacting to each individual as well as their combined output—the continual flowingin of individual and agglomeration serves to add dimension to the blackness and possibility of GRID’s musical ecosystem. With Dahl’s bass-amp angled directly into the microphone Nelson uses for his saxophone, the improvisational sounds of the entire band are fed through Nelson’s pedals and monitor to create a continuously interactive and variable feedback loop that comes to define the visceral immensity of GRID’s soundscapes. This combines with a mutual willingness to evenly shoulder the weight of composition. There is no showcasing of any single player in this amorphous system. The impact of what is created shall be carried by all.

Remaining beyond strict categorization, GRID’s crushing dissonance is an amalgamation of each member’s background in free-jazz and improvisational music, as well as Doom-Metal, Noise, and

Ambient influences. The resistance towards classification and familiarity leaves listeners in an environment negotiable only by feel.

Musically synthesizing and resynthesizing in each moment, GRID’s cyclical transmission of sound and energy continually develops expressive, hyperactive, protean textures that brutally and masterfully navigate through the dense, heavy atmosphere of Decomposing Force with vigorous dynamism.

“Brutal Kings” is a short, claustrophobic passageway of bristles and thorns—each instrument and each note are distinctly and singularly piercing. The cacophonous “Nythynge” violently builds and releases tension as the band moves through passages of imposing, jagged musical discourse. The playing loosens and the tempo slows to an enveloping trudge on the thick, sludgy “The Weight of Literacy.”

Then “Cold Seep” closes the album in a chilled, unsettling ambiance more expansive than anything that precedes it, leaving the impression that you’ve only explored but one tiny corner of GRID’s world.

Built on the tenets of weight, difficulty, challenge, collaboration, and adaptability, GRID constructs and confronts the oppressive dark—not with transcendent opposition but with an embrace, diving deeper in as a way through.
