Silver/Lead is the 15th studio album from musical pioneers Wire. It arrives on the 40th anniversary of their debut performance. Yet it’s about as far from nostalgia as you could get. This is the sound of a uniquely addictive 21st century psychedelic post-punk. Colin Newman and Matt Simms’ guitar work is alternately jagged and luminous, while bassist Graham Lewis’s ear-catching lyrics are vivid yet oblique. Meanwhile, drummer Robert Grey provides a virtual masterclass in percussive minimalism. But it’s how the various instruments mesh together that really counts. And Newman’s production creates a sonic space in which even the smallest gesture is accorded some recognition. Highlights include the optimistic dazzle of ‘Diamonds In Cups’, with its almost T. Rex-style buzz and chug, and the moody swing of ‘This Time’. Elsewhere on the musical spectrum, there’s the menacing widescreen grandeur of ‘Playing Harp for the Fishes’ and breakneck-paced guitar pop of ‘Short Elevated Period’. Wire are one of the world’s most ground-breaking bands, their influence acknowledged by bands as diverse as Blur, Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Savages. But they have never been interested in exploiting past glories. For Wire, there is only ever one possible direction: forwards. So it’s perhaps not surprising that over recent years, they’ve played strings of sold-out shows, achieved career-best record sales, and been cited as a strong influence by yet another generation of bands. Wire’s last three albums garnered nothing but rave reviews. From 2013’s strangely beautiful Change Becomes Us (“It’s fantastic.” – Pitchfork) to the crackling motorik of 2015’s Wire (“It’s all really well turned, potent and crisp.” – The Guardian), and last year’s punchy mini-album Nocturnal Koreans (“It's a cracker and sounds defiantly modern.” – The Quietus). OVERVIEW
2016 saw the release of Callus, the first studio album in four years from the elusive Southern Californian rapper/singer/producer Gonjasufi. The album proved to be a guttural experience; a rugged and edged collection built alongside a cast of local collaborators. Callus also showed that Sumach Ecks’ time away from the spotlight was more reflective than anything; his candid approach and musical direction spoke directly to a new generation of artists and fans losing their sanity within contemporary society. Callus also found the producer tapping into a new reserve of creative inspiration and intention. This newfound desire has now manifested a versatile collection of remixes, covers and original music from Gonjasufi and his people, aptly titled, Mandela Effect. ‘The Mandela Effect’ is a scientific concept of false memories compounding upon themselves, creating false truths. The term was coined after a collective ‘misremembering’ of Nelson Mandela’s death in prison in the 1980’s.

There's something nice about a duck, isn't there? Innocent, passive, kind of fuzzy... unable to trigger a global crisis or all-out apocalypse. It's going on four years since a Slugabed album, but the man's been busy—running a label (Activia Benz), working with others, and making a two scrapped LPs' worth of cuts similar in vibe to the hyper-pop of 2014's Coolest EP—happier, forest-y, more "plinky-plonky." But none of those would-be followups began with a schoolgirl calling an arms dealer to buy a tank, as Inherit the Earth does. There's something in that moment of pretty innocence approaching the cliff's edge of utter chaos that's reflected not only in this set's title, which has been used by both the Bible and a '90s video game about talking animals who survive human extinction, but also in the first song "Stupid Earth." That dreamy scene, colored by warm sax and chill keys, is constantly warping just so, or being smashed over a hard beat and roasted with synth. Slugabed has long been an ace storyteller, even without words, and this is his most vivid, consistent work yet. Which isn't to say Inherit the Earth is bereft of lyrics or even lighter moments. "Gold" plays like a trippy merger of Y2K pop and contemporary alt-R&B thanks, in part, to vocal and production contributions from Hairy Hands and Peter Lyons. Album ender "Earth Is Gone Sorry" is also less bleak than the name would suggest—Lum's soulful voice and the shimmering interstellar textures imply the universe may be better off without our planet making a mess of things. And for all of the slasher-flick effects of "Very Serious Puzzle" and speaker-blowing bass of "Infinite Wave," there is also the thick, glorious funk of "Time 2 Let It Go" and silly digitized brass of "Feeding Time." It's telling that "A Thousand Tiny Hands," one of the most beautiful and discomfiting songs here, is a barely edited single-take drunken piano improvisation about eating drugs—left to ourselves, we are all simultaneously tending toward both annihilation and transcendence. Certainly there is something nice about a duck, but ducks don't understand music and only a screwy person-mind like Slugabed's could discover the humanity in a roiling sea of sound, shape all that into an album of serious depth, and leave listeners with more questions than they started with. While the rest of us live now trapped in the guts of Inherit the Earth, trying to solve its mysteries, he'll be out roaming the English countryside, listening to Nick Drake and feeding seed to fowl.

Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf Larissa Sapko had set two goals for herself in the summer of 2013: find a job, and start a band. Once she got a job, the band wasn't far behind. She asked her friend Kian Sorouri if he would like to play guitar (he did), and he in turn asked Jim Dobrowolski if he would like to play drums (he learned how, and he did). What It Is came out in December 2013, and Loose Tooth enjoyed a year of playing local shows and weekenders in the Northeast. After hearing that Jimmy was moving to Costa Rica, Christian Bach and Kyle Laganella stepped forward and volunteered their shredding skills to keep Loose Tooth moving up and onward. After reworking their first EP What It Is and writing some new songs in the process, the band's debut record Easy Easy East was ready to rip.

In December of 2015, the Como Mamas flew up to New York to appear as par t of the DAPTONE SUPER SOUL REVUE which was playing three nights at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Not wanting to miss the oppor tunity to record these amazing singers at the Daptone studio, we booked a recording session for a few days after the show. JEROME GODBOO has been tearing up stages in Canada and the world for 30 years now, leaving a lasting impression on the psyche of his many fans. The local legend of explosive ‘90s rock band the Phantoms, Jerome is known for his totally unbridled vocals and astonishing harmonica skills (which won him the “Best Harmonica Player” award at the Blues Foundation’s 2014 International Blues Challange in Memphis, Tennessee.) Peter Broderick returns with Allred & Broderick – a duo project between him and his musical partner David Allred – and their debut album ‘Find The Ways’ out on April 7th 2017. Armed with nothing but their voices, a violin and an upright bass, Allred & Broderick began their journey to create an album as minimal as possible. Recorded in Peter’s studio The Sparkle on the Oregon coast, the pair used this solitude to focus on creating something as raw and honest as possible, particularly in what some might deem unattainable during a time where complexity is sought most. In a world full of noise and the anxieties of every day life, Find The Ways brings us together and reminds us to appreciate and confront the simple and fundamental facts of life, and that we as individuals will eventually find our way. Xinobi's new album is pretty much an album rooted in the NOW. Its emo electronic music you can dance to. You can say Atmospheric House with Spoken Word, dreamy electronic with a Pop feel, ethereal Techno, dark chill Leftfield fulfilled with uncommon lyrics on the dance music world. “On The Quiet” is a dance floor-focused story about the transition of many electronic musicians from punk rock and skateboarding into house music and about how dance-music can be a field for social conscious awareness. It’s common knowledge that the second album from an artist is his most difficult task. “On The Quiet” proves to be an exception to this idea. After countless successful singles and remixes Xinobi found his own style on his debut album “1975”, released in 2014, and improved that style on this set of songs that now stands a new landmark on his career. “On The Quiet” is a reflex of the path that many contemporary electronic musicians have crossed, starting on punk and developing into diversity while keeping some of the ethics of punk school. One could say this an D.I.Y. record. Xinobi played and self-produced the whole album and even released on Discotexas (a label he co-owns with Moullinex). Friends were invited to sing on some tracks and there’s Ian MacKaye’s (the man behind such important bands as Minor Threat, Fugazi or the Dischord label) voice about skateboarding manners and urban alternative interpretations. The record also features an artwork by Braulio Amado with extensive biographical writings, all the lyrics, interviews with Igor Cavalera (former member of Sepultura and Mixhell) and David Andersson of Punks Jump Up beautifully crafted with fanzine-styled aesthetics.

‘Street Rituals’ features ten new songs with a major contribution from Paul Weller as well as vocal contributions from both William Bell and Bettye Lavette. The bands 4th studio album was produced by Paul Weller, who also features on all the tracks (piano, guitar & vocal including lead vocal on ‘Your Balloon Is Rising’). Having been hugely impressed by Stone Foundations previous endeavours, Paul personally contacted the band to propose the idea of working together, initially on one specific track, but having enjoyed the process so much, the resulting ten compositions on ‘Street Rituals’ now all have musical input from Paul. Two songs - ‘The Limit of a Man’ & ‘Colour Of’ - are co-writes with a Jones/Sheasby/Weller credit. Stone Foundation’s Neil Jones commented: "Paul contacted us at the start of 2016 after hearing our last record. He wanted to know if we'd like to get involved with a demo he'd been working on and we obviously grasped the opportunity with both hands. ‘The Limit of a Man’ was born out of those early exchanges and from that point onwards we never looked back". On Brutal Disciplin, the tones and textures shift but the mood remains consistently foreboding. The mechanical rhythms strain through distortion and the clouds of noise billow across vast space on opening track “Kennel Murder Case”, while the lingering minor pad on “Starved To Death” spells out a more melodious foreboding behind the gently bludgeoning drum cycle. “Bitten” takes a more tentative approach, letting its fuzzy backdrop slowly purr around the delicate, snaking patter of the percussion.
Sharp, rasping beats take the lead in the barren landscape of “Elite Dogs Of War”, and yet still the opening scuff of “K9 Warrior” will jerk your head around in a most uncomfortable of fashions. Here the noise is cloying, attaching itself to any sonic matter trying to peak through the muck, yet there’s time and space for a militaristic narrative to unfold towards the climax of the track. That leaves it to “No Dogs Go To Heaven” to round the release off in a suitably bleak fashion, placing the emphasis on low-end industrial pulse and swirling static firing out into an uncertain stereo field.

Andrea Taeggi (of Lumisokea) and his distinctive rhythmic approaches and sound palette make this a release as engaging as it is adventurous. Clattering, mutant breakbeat flaring flirts with zippy synthesis on “Huehueteotl” before the more intimate shuffle and rattle of “Cipacti”, its kitchen sink percussion falling prey to crafty edits and FX swells. “Tlaloc” grows from sparse beginnings to meet with stark lead hooks that shine out amongst the razor sharp beat programming.
Hyper-modern breakbeat science looms once more on Side B opener “Quetzalcoatl”, and continues apace into the intricate roll of “Miccaotli”, where dazzling daubs of synths splay out between the urgent thrust of the drums. “Tezontle” closes proceedings with a snaking approach that equally champions infinitesimal sound design and hard-rocking, idiosyncratic groove. There’s a consistent style that shapes out Miccaotli, and it once again demonstrates the great technical skill Taeggi is capable of deploying in the studio.
