employee SPOTLIGHT

Paul Sabisch DEPARTMENT: Sales JOB TITLE: Midwest Account Rep YEARS AT REDEYE: 3 WHAT WAS THE EARLIEST PIECE OF MUSIC YOU REMEMBER OBSESSING OVER? One of the most notable pieces of music that has stuck with me over the years is the album “Somewhere in the Between” by Streetlight Manifesto. Quite surprising that a ska band encapsulates the philosophy of Absurdism so well. . . AT WHAT AGE DID YOU DEVELOP AN INTEREST IN MUSIC, AND WHAT SPARKED THAT INTEREST? I have been intrigued by physical musical media since I was very young. My parents like to remind me that as a young child I would stare at the artwork of these massive “black CDs” (what I later learned were called vinyl) that my dad had in his office at home. Love me a good cultural artifact.

pete’s PICKS Highlighting catalog finds and deep cuts from within the Redeye warehouse.

SPECIAL REQUEST, “Vortex” Houndstooth (2019) “This album comes to us from Houndstooth, and I stumbled upon it because of the sick cover art (the turquoise/magenta color combo is LOUD). It’s from 2019 but has those great old-school 90s House vibes. Grab the 2xLP on color vinyl!” —Peter Hoeller

THUNDERCAT IT IS WHAT IT IS Release Date: April 3, 2020 The album, produced by Flying Lotus and Thundercat, features musical contributions from Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole and Zack Fox. Available in standard red LP, standard cream indie edition LP, deluxe gatefold clear LP, deluxe gatefold picture disc LP and CD. It Is What It Is follows his game-changing third album Drunk (2017). That record completed his transition from virtuoso bassist to bonafide star and cemented his reputation as a unique voice that transcends genre. “This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and downs that come with that,” Bruner says about It Is What It Is. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand… some things just aren’t meant to be understood.”

Everything Is Recorded is the collaborative artist project of producer and record label owner Richard Russell. With the genesis of the project beginning as jam sessions at his West London recording studio, Everything Is Recorded released their debut eponymous album in February 2018, receiving critical acclaim and a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize that same year. The debut featured an eclectic international and inter-generational cast of collaborators and musicians, including Sampha, Obongjayar, Kamasi Washington, Damon Albarn, Giggs, Ibeyi, Wiki, Syd, Rachel Zeffira, Infinite, Green Gartside, Peter Gabriel and Owen Pallett. Set for release in April 2020, the sophomore release - FRIDAY FOREVER – brings together a similarly wide ranging set of artists both new and established, amongst them Infinite Coles, Aitch, Berwyn, Maria Somerville, A.K. Paul, Oli Malin, Ghostface Killah, FLOHIO, Kean Kavanagh, Penny Rimbaud, Owen Pallett, James Massiah and Richard Russell’s unmistakeable production and keen sample selections. “Russell’s vision, it seems, is about the power of collaboration … a grand synthesis of XL’s stylistic history” - New Yorker “A masterclass in the art of collaboration” - Q Magazine “It’s a bit early to be talking about albums of the year, but Russell has just set the benchmark” - Sunday Times “A wonderful, enveloping new album” - Sunday Times “A tremendous achievement” - Evening Standard “The embodiment of pure, creative freedom” - Noisey “Magical music… A subtle and seamless love note to music” - Record Collector “Impressively intimate and cohesive… demonstrating his ability to combine a classic soul sensibility with modern and hip hop indebted production techniques.” - Mixmag “The end result is something truly special” - Clash

Each time they take the stage, Madrid-bred rock band Hinds create a kind of wild magic, a feel-good free-for-all often complete with synchronized dancing and giddy crowd-surfing from the members themselves. While the band’s first two albums channeled the euphoric energy of their live show in their gorgeously punchy take on garage-rock, their latest full-length adds entirely new texture to their sound. Produced by Jenn Decilveo (The Wombats, Ben Platt and Anne-Marie), The Prettiest Curse finds the band letting their imaginations run more freely than ever, even as they share some of their most emotionally heavy material to date. The Prettiest Curse takes its title from the sometimes-daunting experience of giving your soul to rock-and-roll. In the making of The Prettiest Curse, Hinds devised a brilliantly unpredictable vocabulary for communicating their most painful feelings. Unfolding in frenetic guitar riffs and buzzing basslines, powerful drumming and delicate piano work, the album endlessly delivers massively catchy melodies and vocals that growl and sigh with equal ferocity. The effect of all that unrestrained expression is fantastically dizzying, made even more so by Hinds’ constant back-and-forth between their native tongue and English.

BORN RUFFIANS JUICE RELEASE DATE: APRIL 3, 2020 JUICE, the 6th full-length record from Born Ruffians, is a hyper, earnest, and affecting collection of rock and roll songs, written and polished over a three-year span then sewn together into a cohesive and uniquely enjoyable experience. It’s Born Ruffians—guitarist/vocalist Luke Lalonde, bassist Mitch Derosier, and drummer Steve Hamelin—as they’ve always been: on their own terms, heads against the wind until their work is done. JUICE suggests a desperate appreciation for the major key melodies and camaraderie that are prompted when your back is against the wall. Heard on their own, each single is a neon bolt of energy and storytelling, but placed alongside and tumbling into one another from start to finish, they’re recontextualized as interlocking pieces in a sweet, punchy puzzle. The record is a testament to where Born Ruffians have come from, and a bright, bold, pulpy mission statement for the future. However weird and overwhelming things get, Born Ruffians are back to remind us that they’re in this for the long haul.

TITLE: CELESTIAL LOVE BLACK VINYL LP / CD BOX LOT QUANTITY: 30 LP / 45 CD FILE UNDER: JAZZ / AFROFUTURISM MH-8218 LP UPC: 090771821812 FIRST EVER REISSUES OF A SATURN RECORDS FAVORITE! True studio albums of Ra with the Arkestra are rare on this planet or beyond. This studio saucer is an interplanetary interpreter, here to convert even the faintest of heart to the sounds of Sun Ra. Recorded with Arkestra veterans at the same NY studio that hosted countless Sun Ra sessions since the late 60s, this first ever reissue of Celestial Love contains the only known recordings of the titular track and “Blue Intensity,” plus a cut not on the original Saturn LP! The music here is mostly "inside Ra." In fact, it's one of the most accessible albums in the Ra canon. One of Ra's early heroes, Duke Ellington, is represented twice with "Sophisticated Lady" and "Drop Me Off In Harlem," and two other standards ("Smile" and "Sometimes I'm Happy," both sung by June Tyson) are given snappy Ra arrangements. Though Sun Ra was renowned for outrageous music and performances, Celestial Love is a reminder that he was a man of many moods, with a deep respect for jazz history. His embrace of Futurism never implied a rejection of the past. Even rocket ships were constructed with raw materials discovered eons ago.

ROBBIE BASHO SONGS OF THE GREAT MYSTERY—THE LOST VANGUARD SESSIONS (CD & 2-LP Limited Clear Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: APRIL 3, 2020 Robbie Basho was one of the big three American acoustic guitar innovators, John Fahey and Leo Kottke being the other two. Basho was the least commercially successful of the three, but his influence and reputation has steadily grown since his untimely death in 1986 at the age of 45. And with good reason; for Basho’s deeply spiritual approach, intellectual rigor, and formal explorations (among his goals was the creation of a raga system for American music), present a deeply compelling, multi-faceted artist. Basho was actually a college friend of John Fahey, and his early recordings (like Kottke’s) were for Fahey’s Takoma label. Following Fahey‘s move to Vanguard, Basho followed suit, and released Voice of the Eagle and Zarthus for the label in 1972 and 1974, respectively (his most commercially successful records were made for the Windham Hill label later in the decade). Flash forward to 2009: Vanguard contacted guitarist (and long-time Basho champion) Glenn Jones with the intriguing news that an unreleased Robbie Basho album session had recently been found, on a tape that, alas, lacked any real documentation. It was only 12 years later, when Jones, in the process of researching the liner notes for this release, discovered the truth: that not just the mysterious tape but both Voice of the Eagle and Zarthus were the result of one marathon session in 1971 or 1972 recorded in New York City by Vanguard staff engineer Jeffrey Zaraya. Songs of the Great Mystery—The Lost Vanguard Sessions, then, takes its place as the third of the triumvirat of albums Basho recorded for the label, and it is their equal in every way, exploring, in particular, some of the same Native American themes found on Voice of the Eagle. Some of the tunes showed up on later albums in much different forms; 1978’s Visions of the Country featured “A Day in the Life of Lemuria” (re-titled “Leaf in the Wind”) and “Night Way,” and “Laughing Thunder, Crawling Thunder” went through various permutations before appearing on 1981’s Rainbow Thunder as “Crashing Thunder.” But for Basho fans, the originals will probably steal the show, particularly “Song of the Great Mystery,” which, unlike some of the songs here that showcase Basho’s singing and piano-playing, brings to the fore his amazing six-string guitar technique and touch. Vanguard briefly put these sessions up digitally when they were located, but Real Gone Music’s release represents the first time they have come out in any physical form (and the alternate take of “A Day in the Life of Lemuria,” also discovered by Jones, has never been heard anywhere). Featuring track-by-track annotation, rare photos (including Basho’s own handwritten notes found in the tape box), and remastering by Mike Milchner of SonicVision, Songs of the Great Mystery—The Lost Vanguard Sessions is a timely release heralding the release of a new documentary and an upcoming Basho box set. Available on CD or on a double-LP set pressed in clear vinyl limited to 1000 copies at Gotta Groove Records and housed inside a gatefold jacket. A great American artist, finally getting his due!

PARSONSFIELD HAPPY HOUR ON THE FLOOR On April 3, 2020 acclaimed folkrock quartet Parsonsfield will release their highly anticipated fifth release, Happy Hour On The Floor on Signature Sounds. Produced by multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Lazar Davis (Joan As A Police Woman, Okkervil River), Happy Hour On The Floor was recorded in a small barn over three weeks. It is both subdued and danceable, exploring the in-between moments in life. Chris Freeman reflects, “We took some time off the road to analyze where we’ve been over the last five years of touring. We made ourselves fresh again, but with a whole new depth of experience in our pockets. We tracked almost the whole album on one microphone, one instrument at a time. We didn’t see ourselves as a folk band, an indie band or by any other label. In a bigger sense, this album is a story diving deep into ourselves and leaning on each other.”

MAITA

“Best Wishes”

• Debut album for Kill Rock Stars • Indie Retail Exclusive Vinyl Maita-Keppeler’s bold vulnerability and literate flair is on full display on the quartet’s debut album, Best Wishes. The album will be out on venerated indie imprint Kill Rock Stars (Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, the Decemberists) which is a story in itself. Until recently, KRS was headed up by Portia Sabin, whose husband Slim Moon founded the label. When Portia played MAITA’s record for Slim, who retired from the label 12 years ago, he experienced something of an epiphanic moment. “My love of MAITA, and my belief in Maria's songwriting, pulled me back into the record business,” Slim affirms. Maita-Keppeler began experimenting with songwriting while soaking in the indie artists of the 2000’s such as Bright Eyes and Feist. She related to how these writers interweave reality and poetry, and resonated with their emotional candor, particularly in light of her tendencies toward emotional restraint while growing up. Best Wishes balances ethereal musicality with visceral expressiveness. This juxtaposition is mirrored in the arrangements through potent use of loud and soft dynamics and in Maita-Keppeler’s lyrics, which manage to be layered, literate, but also impactfully concise. Peel Dream Magazine is the musical vehicle for NYC's Joe Stevens, who launched the band in 2018 with the critically acclaimed album Modern Meta Physic, a mysterious, liminal tribute to the hazy end of ‘90s dream-pop that found its place on numerous "Best of 2018" lists. Now Peel Dream are back with Agitprop Alterna, an album that pays homage to the fuzzy, mod-ish pop of acts like My Bloody Valentine and early Stereolab, but it's also indebted to stateside bands like Yo La Tengo and Rocketship that were cut from a similar cloth. Agitprop Alterna finds Stevens channeling the collaborative spirit of the band's live incarnation in the studio, deepening the connection between the existential and the interpretive first explored on Modern Meta Physic. It is a rejection of manipulation in all its forms and a buzzsaw against complacency; it's a rare trick to agitate without being obvious, and perhaps that makes Agitprop Alterna the most Peel Dream Magazine-like statement yet.

OVERVIEW A Western Circular is Will Archer's debut under his new nom-de-plume, following early EPs and an album under the now-retired Slime moniker. On A Western Circular, Archer has uncovered new depths and forged an invigorating singular sound - supple and multi-layered, honoring his acoustic heritage and influence, while building a sonic universe that commands contemporary references to everything from Frank Zappa to Yasuaki Shimuzu, Robert Wyatt to Arthur Russell. An album that’s been in the works for the past half-decade, A Western Circular is a bold, reflective piece that directly relates to Archer’s personal experiences of life and death, centered on one particular week where they breathed with equal intensity. The record’s themes of greed, love and loyalty all relate back to that specific time. Inspired by author John Fante, A Western Circular is a spiritual voyage through life’s pushing and pulling: finding beauty in the rough, sadness in the bright. Ostensibly, it’s a poignant reflection on the duality of the human condition. Within A Western Circular lies an exciting and varied crew of guest artists including MF DOOM, Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands), Sudan Archives, and Laura Groves, all contributing vocals to his rich, dextrous compositions. These collaborations are the by-product of several years of writing and producing.

In the early 90’s, David Byrne was at SOB’s to see the legendary Mexican group Café Tacuba. The opener was an unknown NYC band that went by King Changó. David came back from the show raving about an incredible, vivacious singer who climbed all over the speakers and leapt around the stage. He thought it was one of the best performances he’d ever seen and that Luaka Bop should sign them. We did. King Changó was the first Latin rock band signed to an American label, and their singer, Andrés ‘Blanquito Man’ Blanco, was indeed a force of nature. We released two King Changó albums, featuring members who went on to start playing in bands such as the Dap Kings and Antibalas. Blanquito Man unfortunately passed away in 2017 after a long battle with liver cancer. Luaka Bop is releasing these albums on vinyl for the first time as a tribute to him, and in gratitude of King Changó’s die-hard fans. This is what we had to say about King Changó 20 years ago, when these records were first released: You say you like it RAW? You think you know what the New World Order is all about? Well you’ll wanna grab a seat ringside when New York’s Latin alternative ambassadors, King Changó, spice up the rock ‘n’ wrestling connection with The Return of El Santo! Led by irrepressible frontman Andrés Blanco, King Changó step into the ring in tribute to Mexico’s wrestling superstar, the masked warrior known as El Santo, with their first album in three years—and a sound so energetic and fresh we don’t need no stinkin’ chihuahua dog to sell it.

From their birth on New York City’s mean streets, King Changó quickly established themselves at the top of Latin rock’s international heap with their 1996 Luaka Bop debut, King Changó. Their mix of hard-charging ska, Latin rhythm, and roots reggae converted virgin audiences into true believers from Venezuela to Mexico, Spain, and Japan; “Melting Pot” the single and video off of their first album saw regular rotation on MTV Latino and M2.

MELKBELLY PITH

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com Melkbelly sculpts their signature balance between subtle melody and frantic noise on new album PITH, their second for Carpark Records/Wax Nine. The Chicago-based foursome has made spatial dynamics central to its arrangements, reaching for weirder highs and more startling atmospherics, negative space giving way to enveloping walls of chaos. This sense of form is reflected not only in the purposeful production, but in the ceramic cover art created by Chicago artist Deborah Handler. Recording in two short sessions six months apart, the band worked with longtime collaborator Dave Vettraino, this time at Bloomington, Indiana’s Russian Recording. Alongside an arsenal of rock gear and airy synth layers coaxed from a Moog Prodigy, PITH’s multidimensionality was refined by the studio’s collection of rare Russian tube mics, which were placed in every corner to capture Melkbelly’s unabashed loudness. Frontperson Miranda Winters’ charmingly bright vocals are newly effected, delayed to a menacing, mysterious thickness. Guitars, handled by Miranda and Bart Winters, interlock and separate with dizzying ease, riffs dissolving into floating trails and reappearing with metallic edges. Bassist Liam Winters’ low grooves bounce and kick along with drummer James Wetzel’s rhythmically unsettling performance, which stretches time yet never falters. After two years touring internationally, the band felt comfortable enough to rearrange songs they knew well, their renewed closeness guiding them. Their literally familial relationship was crucial for support, as PITH was summoned from a place of mourning. “We lost an incredible friend suddenly and nostalgia always acts as a helpful tool for me in navigating difficult times,” Miranda says. “Revisiting emotionally challenging moments or significant social interactions helps shed light on confusing feelings for me. Lyrically, grief gave way to considering life,” she elaborates. Considering life is exactly right, as Miranda also attributes inspiration to her pregnancy throughout the recording process. Consequently, she drew from diverse scenes—Grimm-like children’s stories too dark for kids; thorny, mossy forests—to create stories that feel distinctly Melkbellian: philosophically strange, strikingly textural, funny and sad and open-hearted.

Maturation, as well as their DIY reverence, can be heard on the temposhifting “Sickeningly Teeth.” It’s an homage to “feel[ing] like shit really loudly or obnoxiously. You know, in an unapologetic youthful way,” deadpans Miranda. James describes it as a “rhythmic exploration to make the song feel like it’s pulling itself apart.” Follow-up single “LCR” similarly shapes PITH’s dynamics and mood. Its shifting signatures held steady by James’ frantic beat, the track is a purgatorial homage to motion, ultimately propelled by its tangled guitars and layered vocal harmonies. “It’s about how having conversations with the dead can scoot you along in life, even when you’re really only hearing one side of the conversation or making up the other half,” says Miranda. Since their 2017 debut Nothing Valley, the members of Melkbelly have an even better understanding of their sonic motivations. “We’re always going to sort through the past to make better sense of the present,” Miranda says, and in doing so Melkbelly continually finds ways to mutate its sound. On PITH, Melkbelly sought space, and succeeded in crafting it. What a pleasure to be let in. “I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig” reasoned George Bernard Shaw. “You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.” True to form, Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs have left the wiser of us aware that they are no band to be messed with. This is made manifest on ‘Viscerals’, their third proper, and an enormous leap forward in confidence, adventure and sheer intensity even from their 2018 breakthrough ‘King Of Cowards’. Incisive in its riff-driven attack, infectiously catchy in its songcraft and more intrepid than ever in its experimental approach, ‘Viscerals’ is the sound of a leaner, more vicious Pigs, and one with their controls set way beyond the pulverising one-riff workouts of their early days. Yet Pigsx7 have effortlessly broadened their horizons and dealt with all these new avenues without sacrificing one iota of their trademark eccentricity, and the personality of this band has never been stronger, whether on the Sabbathian and philosophical warcry of ‘Reducer’, the debauched, Jane’s Addiction-tinged swagger of ‘Rubbernecker’, the Melvins vs Sonic Youth demoltion derby of ‘New Body’ or even the demented MBV-meets-Twisted-Sister party-banger from hell that is ‘Crazy In Blood’. “We’re a peculiar bunch of people - a precarious balance of passion, intensity and the absurd” notes vocalist Matt Baty. Such is the unstoppable character of this unique and ever-porcine outfit; still the hungriest animals at the rock trough.

Portuguese composer Afonso Ferreira a.k.a. FARWARMTH is a keen collaborator, as part of the duos HRNS, PURGA and the collective 00:NEKYIA. His debut album for Planet Mu is perhaps his most ambitious collaborative work yet. Built up over four years, its sources are recordings of friends and family in improvised sessions with cello, flute and accordion with Afonso on keyboards from the time he was on an artists residency in 2018.

Afonso's music is made by carefully processing and rendering his source material and he talks about the compositions in terms of emotional resonance, the construction of “connections between time, people and sound” and the sessions which make up this album being about “emotional exchange, that gave away to something I did not imagine I could've reached alone.” He describes the album as “rooted in the earth, but aiming for the heavens in an endless search to breathe enough air.” The music here can seem alien; recognisable sounds turned unrecognisable, channeling raw emotion by building layers of sound in unusual ways into huge, energetic sculptures. The album opens with shard-like chords and twinkling melodies as if the sound is being coaxed into life. The track titles also suggest an almost uncanny onset starting with ‘Shadows In The Air', moving on to the open blasts of chords in ‘Below The White Sky’, and the strange intermittent static of 'Across The Black Sand'. These titles all refer to Afonso’s experience of being alone on the beach where he lives, making sense of the endless winters. It's not until 'Into The Grey Sea' that the bare instruments reveal themselves, freely weaving over each other in a strange dark tapestry, shot through with shimmering sounds that seem to come from distant shores. 'To Heft The Weight Of Memory' lands somewhere between the mystical sadness of Arvo Pärt and the fragmented beauty of Fennesz. 'Sunlight Mirroring' feels blissful; flutes fly out over cold crashing waves. The album finishes with the flickering static of ‘Shadows Through Time’ which gives way to a rich cello fleshing out the wall of noise, as crunchy distortion melts away into silence.

JAMES ALEXANDER BRIGHT HEADROOM JAMES ALEXANDER BRIGHT

HEADROOM

James Alexander Bright's music is as visual a voyage as it is a sonic one; a kaleidoscope of colours that swirl, swoon, soar and sing. Stepping into his musical world is a multi-sensory experience, one where smooth grooves, wonky rhythms, dreamy melodies and immersive atmospheres coalesce to form their own sphere. “Sound as vision,” says Bright of the audio aesthetic he relates to and aims for. “Music you can bite into.” Based in the Hampshire countryside and an illustrator by day, Bright’s world is often a dual one but one where elements overlap and inform one another. “I spend a lot of my day creating things visually and everyday life can be an assault on the senses, ”says Bright.“ Evening is my quiet time; time for my ears. Invariably I’m inspired by the things that people and creatures do in the dark. ”This creative duality extends beyond just the visual and the music too. It’s found deep rooted in the music itself, which explores a mix between lo-fi and hi-fi, possessing an intimate bedroom recording-like quality but with production that sounds glowing and golden. Similarly, the sunny sheen found in the music-via a kind of psychedelic pop meets electronic soul-is one born from dichotomy.“I feel at home in the deep south of England,” he says. “I’m in the middle of nowhere with lots of green land, fresh air and head space. I feel like the sunshine in the South in the summer months

really reflects in my music. However, I tend to make music in the dark hours and winter months, so it’s almost like the music is my sunshine and happy place in these moments. ”The end result is also an album that exists in a dual world, one that at times has enough bounce and buoyancy to fill a dance floor-as on the disco funk strutting “Lead Me Astray”- and others feels perfectly suited to introspective headphone listening as on the breezy, woozy ambience of “Cala Llenya”.The latter track pays tribute to the Ibiza beach of the same name, whereas “Dancing with the Birds”- a delicate exploration of pastoral folk-is a nod to one of Britain’s most beloved treasures. “It’s based on a late night walk having just watched a David Attenborough documentary, featuring these beautiful birds that have a crazy mating dance. I love his documentaries and I was listening to a lot of Bert Jansch. The next night I had this vision of dancing birds come into my mind. ”Elsewhere Headroom touches upon, in Bright’s own words, 60’s sunshine doo-wop, mutant disco, and mystic mountain top vibes. It’s an album that explores a great deal yet even amidst its dualities it retains a sense of cohesion throughout. It’s a mixture that Bright feels pleased to have managed to juggle so seamlessly. “I think there is a good balance around experimentation on the record-a nice mix between fun and substance.”

To coalesce this childlike playfulness into their musical identity, Crisman teamed up with tenured Denton musicians Grahm Robinson of MAH KEE OH and Dead Sullivan’s Truman “Boone” Patrello to record the band’s self-titled debut studio album. Contrasted against the juvenility of Crisman’s paintings, the band’s collective experience is refracted throughout the measured ten-song collection. The melancholic and sinuous lead single “Surprise” pulls from childhood memories of wanting to be included and feeling misunderstood in order to lend its start-stop riffs an emotional touchstone. On “SeeYa,” the band employs acerbic distortion and twinkling arpeggios to explore the immaturity and inevitability of trying to forget a person or feeling that lingers far too long, where final single “IceeBlue” is about experiencing the infectiousness of a romance, a thematic reproduction of the song’s infectious composition.

Punk Slime Recordings are proud to present the debut album from Gothenburg quintet Hollow Ship, the follow-up to the acclaimed debut 7” We Were Kings from late 2019. Due on April 3, Future Remains is a massive introduction from the band, showcasing their unique take on psychedelic rock which sounds like nothing else around, expertly produced by Hollow Ship together with Dungen producer Mattias Glavå on the majority of the album and working with Daniel Johansson on opening track “Take Off”. A lot of new bands take their time in finding their feet; working their way slowly to the sound they want to project, and figuring out what it is they want to say gradually, as they go along. Not this one, though - both sonically and thematically, Future Remains sees them storm out of the gate with a crystal-clear mission statement. Somewhere in the space behind a well-worn eight-track recorder and the polish of present-day production, Hollow Ship have lift off. “We Were Kings sets the band into a the cradle of psych occupied by Goat, Flamingods, or Khruangbin, bands that find something new while rifling through the overlapping detritus of the past.” – Raven Sings The Blues on “We Were Kings” ALSO AVAILABLE: PNKSLM071-SI We Were Kings 7” (7” black vinyl, limited edition of 200) UPC: 634457003002

EGG013CD

LP is on neon yellow vinyl with a gatefold sleeve. Follow up to their critically acclaimed 2017 album “This is Eggland”. It is their second album co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann. Throughout their 13 year career, TLE have embraced isolation. Both metaphorically and geographically the married couple have chosen to shun the social conventions of normal life and dedicated their band and their life to the pursuit of what feels right. Operating out of their hometown of Lancaster TLE are lonely pioneers and self confessed kings of idiocy. Working in an industry whose currency is money, success and nepotism, TLE want none of it. They’re undoubtedly the most real band in Britain, operating in a world when true authenticity is hard to find. “I Am Moron” was self recorded by the band in Lancaster. Continuing the heaviness of “ This is Eggland” “I am Moron” brings more depth to their sound bringing with it a mix of heavy psych, pop and strangeness. Some songs flicker between an earthly realism and the otherworldly loneliness of a one way space mission. While in contrast, Insect Repellent launches a gonzo-style attack against the middle classes and Bearpit questions the essence of working class freedom. With no booking agent, manager, record label or publisher TLE are truly independent. And support for them is snowballing. They are selling out bigger and bigger venues and more eggheads are joining them in their crusade against bullshit. 1. Long Stem Carnations 2. You Can Go Now 3. This Decision 4. WARM DIGITS

FLIGHT OF IDEAS STREET DATE: 03 APRIL 2020

Warm Digits release their new album “Flight of Ideas” on Memphis Industries on 3 April 2020. On "Flight of Ideas", Warm Digits make a call to arms: when we all think our ideas are right, what are the costs of never believing you could be wrong? Looking back to the history of psychology to find out what happens when ideas outlive their sell-by date, with their vocal guests they set up a blistering musical exchange between fluorescent agitfunk, primary-coloured synth-bounce and fizzing sheets of guitar noise. The LP features vocal contributions from Maximo Park’s Paul Smith, The Lovely Eggs, The Orielles, Rozi Plain and the Delgados’ Emma Pollock.

Track listing: 1. Frames and Cages 2. Feel The Panic (feat. The Lovely Eggs) 3. The View From Nowhere (feat. Emma Pollock) 4. I'm OK, You're OK 5. Fools Tomorrow (feat. Paul Smith) 6. Replication 7. Shake The Wheels Off (feat. The Orielles) 8. Everyone Nervous (feat. Rozi Plain) 9. False Positive 10. Flight of Ideas

CD: CAT NO: MI0589CD UPC: 5056340100660 STANDARD BLACK VINYL LP (180G) (+ MP3): CAT NO: MI0589LP UPC: 5056340100653

[INDIE EXCLUSIVE] ORANGE COLOUR VINYL LP (180G) (+ MP3): CAT NO: MI0589LPX UPC: 5056340100820

Infused with the restive spirit of Warm Digits and their guests, these inspirations are taken as a call to arms rather than an academic panel discussion. “Fools Tomorrow” uses the language of scientific revolutions and a spiral-eyed swirl of electro shoegaze to show how being able to accept you’re wrong can change your life, while “Replication” takes the ever-circling influence of Steve Reich and cult synth-composers like Laurie Spiegel to create a luminescent sparkling throb that’s impossible to resist. The Delgados’ Emma Pollock lends her vocals to "The View From Nowhere" which concerns two people working out their closeness and distance. It could be about any relationship, but the title is a reference to the way psychoanalysts historically kept themselves a "blank screen" with their patients, as if they could take a "view from nowhere" and be wholly objective in what they saw. “Feel the Panic” sees wigout psych-merchants The Lovely Eggs take advantage of Warm Digits’ relentless momentum to enthusiastically rail against pigeonholing and outmoded systems of authority with an unruly air-punching chorus. The song was inspired by the "being sane in insane places" experiment, which argued that the power wielded by psychiatrists' diagnoses was dangerously capricious, and that in some instances the treatment induced precisely the psychic distress they sought to classify. "Shake The Wheels Off" is about the moment when those subjugated by archaic systems of control take their power back: in this instance, the way research on transport safety took the male body as the norm, drastically increasing the risk that women would get injured in a car crash. The Orielles' roll-call of female engineering heroes heralds the moment when the balance starts to be redressed. Meanwhile Rozi Plain gently turns insecurity on its head over a pulsating Eurobeat-meets-MBV backing to make “Everyone Nervous” almost feel like a valedictory slogan. Celebrate Your Uncertainty! In an increasingly off-kilter world where reality shifts daily, truth is merely what we decide it to be, and an avalanche of possible identities overwhelms us with possibility, it can feel like our lives are careering towards chaos down a oneway street. The question is: do we “Feel The Panic” or “Shake The Wheels Off”? With its glorious defiance and heart-bursting grooves, “Flight of Ideas” calls to our past experience for answers, and dares us to listen. Warm Digits are Andrew Hodson and Steve Jefferis from Newcastle-uponTyne, UK. Their previous album for Memphis Industries, "Wireless World", featured guest vocals from Field Music and Sarah Cracknell, amongst others, garnered plaudits from BBC 6Music including an "Album of the Day" slot and playlists for “End Times” “Growth of Raindrops”, and boosted them on to the festival bills of Bluedot, Green Man and Festival No.6 amongst others.

Extradition Order - American Prometheus Blang LP

BLANG81LP

CD BLANG81CD 0731628564185

Extradition Order’s “American Prometheus” album is a co-release between five (count them!) labels: Gare Du Nord, Blang, Jezus Factory, Helen Llewelyn Product 19 and I Blame The Parents. “A Northern Soul album about the atomic bomb” is how the band have referred to it during its creation. A great tagline…that music is in the band’s blood and their Warrington roots….maybe that’s all you need to read…..but of course it’s not quite as simple as that. After their astute post-indie dissection of the Kennedy dynasty on their previous album, EO’s obsession with US politics and history turns to the life and career of J Robert Oppenheimer around the Manhattan Project and the development of the first A-bomb. The songs cover the science a little, but also Oppenheimer’s private and political life and legacy - the album concludes with the reminder that he was nominated for a Nobel Prize three times but never won it. Musically the band have taken their often angular dramatic post-punk energy and concentrated it into concise indie beat music that has clear Motown influences, as well as some of the barely contained but danceable terror of bands like The Pop Group or more recently Black Country New Road. On top of that, the unisex lead vocals (Alastair Harper, Anoushka Kenley and Rosie Beard) can conjure up moments of sheer gothic rock and roll abandon - think The Rocky Horror Show meets the B-52s. The album is dedicated to EO founder member Nick Boardman who sadly passed away in 2018 but whose bass hooks and singing run through this record at its foundations. 1.Daddy, Give Me Your Money 2. NEOTROPICAL

Neotropical is a post-humous collection of works from Colin Ward - one of the integral members of the DIY space Rhinoceropolis in Denver, CO. We offer this collection in loving memory of the life, vision and spirit of Colin Richard Ferguson Ward, 1990-2018. All proceeds will be donated to the 'CRFW Fund' which provides artistsʼ grants in Colin Wardʼs name. Neotropical was recorded 2014-2017, but the recordings feel right at home in the future that is 2020. Shape shifting techno / punk rave music / bandpassed alien speech. Smoldering FM synthesis, endlessly spiraling arps and heavily-processed vocoder vocals are meshed together for an album that could thrive on headphones or in the club.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

RXM Reality is Chicago-based producer Mike Meegan. His hyperdetailed, deeply fragmented tracks

Artist: RXM Reality Album: blood blood blood blood

Label: Hausu Mountain Cat#: HAUSMO104 Formats: Tape 6 34457 01160 1 Release Date: 04/03/20 (click album art to stream)

RIYL: Sophie, Arca, Boomkat Labels, Demdike Stare, Andy Stott, Amensia Scanner, Fatima Al Qadiri. RXM Reality has shared the stage with Eartheater, The Field, Laurel Halo, Actress, & Ariel Zetina. C40 - Purple tape with black imprints. Pro-dubbed at A to Z Audio. Artwork by HausMo Max & Emma Daffin.

“RXM Reality burst from Hausu Mountain’s wonderfully weird womb last year with Panic Cycle, a highlight for the label, and one of the most fun experimental club albums of the year. Chicago producer Mike Meegan’s kinetic productions merge heavy bass music, jagged IDM, aggressive surges of noise, and sugary melodies alike. On the new DEViL WORLD WiDE, Meegan cooks that combination down into an even more concentrated concoction…For all the wildly different artists Hausu Mountain has introduced over the years, it’s never quite fit into the “club music” conversation; that changes permanently after this second volume of fiery and joyous chaos.” Bandcamp “ Another fine mess from the prolific Hausu Mountain stable! Though still hyperactive and arrhythmic, Meegan’s new material stops short of all out splattercore glitch assault and instead keeps the listener on the edge of their nerves, like a preargument that never quite blows up into a full-on fracas.” - Wire

channel the spastic unraveling of breakcore, the bassheavy abstractions of grime, and the harsh, juxtaposed textures of noise music. blood blood blood blood, his third release on Hausu Mountain, takes the frenetic production displayed on Panic Cycle (2018, HAUSMO72) and DEViL WORLDWiDE (2019, HAUSMO91) to new heights of structural disfiguration and everything-at-once collage composition, while tempering his harmonic sensibilities with more discrete hooks and momentary melodies than ever before. His productions maintain a sense of loosely gridlocked danceability as they blast listeners with volleys of one-off drum fusillades and washes of sheer electronic confusion. The combination of his manic synth patches and newfound applications of vocal samples sketch out his most legible leads to date, taking the form of chopped phrases that continually morph into live-scrolling staccato configurations. Meegan has a practiced mastery for overlaying contrasting moods into the same sonic headspace. Lush pads and processed synth missives appear as signs of life within an apocalyptic landscape of collapsing drum patterns and flares of pummeling low-end. The composite of blood blood blood blood’s varied sound sources reaches us in the form of tracks that forage onward to the next re-stitched vocal burst, breakdown, or smeared interlude. As experimental electronic production in general continues to shift from the measured overlaying of clearly defined voices towards the realm of chaotic granularity, RXM Reality demonstrates that minced, disjointed sounds can collude into something that resembles a dancefloor-ready banger. More than any previous works, blood blood blood blood feels like a seamlessly flowing song cycle where distinctions between individual tracks pale in comparison to the long-form narrative arc of the album in full. As he pieces together improbably catchy hooks from elements that might appear to be chunks of debris, his music illustrates that a seamless program of sounds can emerge when you present something which is all seams. RXM Reality seeks to compress as much input into his tracks as humanly possible, as if to remind us that our time is precious and should be spent floating in the abyss, gyrating unpredictably to music beyond any obvious structural reckoning.

ABOUT The 11 songs on ‘Welcome to Bobby’s Motel’ – Pottery’s debut album - don’t just invite you to move your body; they command you to. Fusing reckless, manic energy with painstaking precision, the record is part post-punk, part artpop, and part dance floor acid trip, hinting at everything from LCD Soundsytem, Devo, Parquet Courts, and Gang of Four as it boldly careens through genres and decades. The music is driven by explosive drums and off-kilter guitar riffs that drill themselves into your brain, accented with deep, funky grooves and rousing gang vocals. The production is similarly raw and wild, suggesting an air of anarchy that belies the music’s careful architecture and meticulous construction. The result is an album full of ambitious, complex performances that exude joy and mayhem in equal measure, a collection that’s alternately virtuosic, chaotic, and pure fun.

REDEYE inside SCOOP

GET TO KNOW YOUR FAVORITE BANDS AND ARTISTS

POTTERY (PAUL JACOBS, JACOB SHEPANSKY, AUSTIN BOYLAN, TOM GOULD, AND PETER BAYLIS)

What are the origins of your band name? The name was up in the air for a bit. I (Austin) had a couple shitty names for it, then Jacob came up with Pottery since his parents were getting into making some. Nothing crazy. Where do you hail from geographically? How has this area impacted or affected your music? We hail from Montreal, Quebec. Montreal is an amazing city to play music in. It’s a big university city which pulls in a lot of young folk. There’s a great art community here and everyone is super supportive of each other. Also the super cold winters gives us lots of time to stay inside and create. How did you start making music? We found a guitar with only one string on it, miraculously, we all had different corresponding strings needed to string to guitar fully. It was in that moment we knew Pottery was born. Describe your music to a new fan in five words or less. Buckfast. How would you describe the evolution of your sound up to now? We started writing a lot of jangly post punk stuff, and I suppose we still do. But we have slowly progressed into writing more dance oriented stuff. I think we’re trying to dial back the guitars a bit and go in a more rhythmic direction. The new record is very percussion oriented. What would your “undercover” or alternative band or artist name be if you couldn’t use your current name? Austin/Peter: Buckfast. Jacob: Ultimate Ceramica. What was the last piece of music you either bought or consumed? Austin: Sounds of the carnival cassette. But I lost it on my way to the carnival. Peter: I’ve been listening to a lot more classical and jazz lately. The last record I got was Portrait in Jazz by Bill Evans Trio. Jacob: Last record I bought was Silver Jews “Bright Flight”. Recently been listening to lots of Cindy Lee and Lightning Bolt. What is your go-to destination for food (while touring or otherwise)? While touring we make a classic morning stop at Mc’D. 4for4 (no less no more) lunch at our mistress, Wendy’s. Cap the day off by watching the sunset over Taco Bell. Describe your music as an outrageous new potato chip flavor. Austin: Dull Pickle. Peter: Catch Up. Jacob: Surfing Oil Spillage. Who or what influences your sound the most? I don’t know exactly what influences us as a band the most as we all come from different musical backgrounds and even currently listen to different music. Peter and I have been into a lot of Afro Beat and African Funk music. We also bond over country a lot. Jacob has always been into Tom Waits, Nick Cave and noisy stuff. Paul is huge on Gene Clark and folky stuff, but also has

a metal background in terms of drumming. Tom’s really into bands such as Big Thief, and used to play in a shoegaze band. Has there been any one musician or performer who has hugely impacted your playing style, or impacted the development of your music? Jacob: Rowland S. Howard, Marc Ribot and Brian Chippendale. If you could collaborate with any other artist or musician, who would it be and why? Austin: David Bowie. I’ve always looked up to him and his ability to be a chameleon. I would love to do a musical with him. He’s dead though. Peter Baylis: Fela Kuti, cause I love his long arrangements and would love to be apart of his band and jam all nighthtt loonnng. Jacob: I’ve always wanted to work with Dean Blunt, he’s got such a singular unique voice. iLoveMakonnen would be another great one, we could make a hit. If you could have a musical career in any other past decade, which would it be? Peter & Austin: The mid 70’s, into the mid 80’s. Do you prefer working in the studio/recording music, or performing live and touring? Peter & Austin: We’re both road dogs who like being on the move and performing live. However the experience in the studio for the last album was a really amazing time! One that we hope to experience over and over. Jacob: Both have their advantages. . . They come in a package, we usually tour on songs that we haven’t recorded yet, so it gives us a chance to feel them out with the audience. Then by the time we get in the studio we know how we want the songs to sound and feel. Describe your live show: Do you have touring members? Electric or acoustic? Do you have a strict setlist or do you keep it loose? We try and keep a very upbeat and intense live show with dips of calmness. We don’t bring any touring members, and usually keep a similar setlist with minor changes throughout a tour. Sometimes we realize certain songs flow better into others and change it up accordingly. Do you have a favorite song or track of yours to play or perform in a live setting? Off the EP, No. 1, we always like playing “Lifeline Costume” live. I think off the new LP our favorite at the moment to perform would be either “Bobby’s Forecast” or “Under the Wires”. What is something you wish your fans and followers knew about you? Austin: I have 2 extra nipples. Peter: Paul draws me with an oval and a triangle… Jacob: I walk very fast. Should Pluto be considered a planet? Peter: Always and forever my love.

New songs came quickly to LaFarge in his new environment, but new temptations soon found him, as well. Though he declines to get into specifics, LaFarge admits that he experienced a significant “fall from grace” during the last months of 2018. “Things sort of started to unravel in my mind,” Shortly before the recording of Rock Bottom Rhapsody began, LaFarge experienced a spiritual awakening — and the faith he re-embraced in his hour of darkness helped to buoy him through the making of the album. Though he was struggling for spiritual equilibrium at the time, LaFarge at least had some rock-solid musical support to lean on. Recorded primarily at Reliable Recorders on Chicago’s Northwest side, Rock Bottom Rhapsody was produced by LaFarge’s friend and collaborator Chris Seefried (who also cowrote several of the album’s tracks), and features the considerable talents of guitarist Joel Paterson, keyboardist Scott Ligon, upright/electric bassist Jimmy Sutton, and drummer Alex Hall. Musically, LaFarge continues to mix and match a wide variety of styles and traditions, while never losing track of his own vision “This record is kind of like Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan hanging out with chanson singers and French jazz bands in like the forties, but I was never trying to make it sound like a particular person. “ Despite the trying period that preceded its recording, Rock Bottom Rhapsody is ultimately far more uplifting and life-affirming than its title would suggest. “That desperation, that struggle,” LaFarge ponders, “Did it add something to the record? It certainly did. I mean, I don’t know if it made it better; it just is what it is. It’s not up to me to decide if people are going to feel that…”

Not so long ago . . . in the long winter of 2016–2017. The debut of Jackie Lynn. It was a year of bright lights and alien love, and an undercurrent of undisguised tension too. It fed the music, what can you say. Then suddenly one night, one gig was just the last. For awhile. Until now. Now it’s a new year beginning, and Jacqueline is the album of that year, bringing Jackie fully back in front of us, larger than life, her arms reaching out farther into the glittering darkness than before.

Jacqueline finds Jackie Lynn down the road apiece, having broken in and out of the glare of American days and nights. A casino queen in Missouri now, a stranger in a short black dress in Odessa tomorrow — another track, another rich slice of the life for our femme long-haul truck driver. Each one flowing with the whitehot bursts of NEW as it unfurls itself around her. The process of realizing is palpable, as we watch Jackie roll her wheels across the wrecked frontier. Removed from the urban play that made her first songs hum with onyx-black edges, Jackie is an agent of her own agency this time around, alone and together with herself, as big-sky perspective flashes through the windshield over and over: dreamlike passing flares, white-line beats, twilight falling silk on the horizon. Jackie’s trip is an analog evoking, among other things, the spiraling times of a traveling musician. The conversation with yourself just keeps coming back around. Every night with a peak and a valley. Practical things that are fun are also fault lines with existential depths opening up underneath. Is going forward getting somewhere, or is the road just crumbling behind you?

Jacqueline blooms expansively from the synthetic rhythms of her debut, blowing up their bone structure with bigger stakes in sight. Jackie Lynn, comprised of Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and Dan Quinlivan of Bitchin Bajas and Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux, approached the material as a group, drawing together the journey over time, inspired collectively to find the right notes, sounds and settings to open the landscape for Jackie — and alter it inexorably. Jacqueline was recorded at home and mixed at Electrical Audio by Cooper Crain.

Raúl Llerena Vásquez – known to the world as Ranil – is a Peruvian singer, bandleader, recordlabel entrepreneur and largerthan- life personality who swirled the teeming buzz of the Amazonian jungle, the unstoppable rhythms of Colombian dance music, Brazilian Carimbó and the psychedelic electricity of guitar-driven rock and roll into a knock-out, party-starting concoction. It’s cumbia alright, but you’ve never heard cumbia quite like this before. Ranil’s extraordinary output has remained one of the best kept secrets among collectors of cumbia and psychedelic Latin sounds. With the release of Ranil y su Conjunto Tropical it is a secret no longer. Assembled by Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb from original LPs sourced from Ranil himself, this fully-licenced compilation presents 14 tracks – many of which have never seen wide release outside the Amazonian region – by a singular artist at the very height of his considerable powers. Prepare yourself for a guitar groove you won’t soon forget.

Buttertones

JAZZ HOUND The Buttertones arrive with Jazzhound, their most extravagant, ambitious, and fully realized album to date. Modesto ‘Cobi’ Cobiån, Sean Redman, and vocalist/guitarist Richard Araiza have been playing together for seven years now, having first come together for a self-titled debut in 2013; along with London Guzman on sax and keys, they’ve come to establish themselves as one of L.A.’s tightest groups, conquering stages from Coachella to Tropicalia. Continuing their partnership with producer Jonny Bell of Crystal Antlers, who produced the last record, Midnight in a Moonless Dream as well as 2017’s Gravedigging, the Buttertones waited until they were good and ready before hitting the legendary Electro-Vox Studios in Hollywood, where they arrived knowing exactly what they wanted to lay to tape. Armed with an arsenal of the most propulsive music they’ve written yet, the band recorded the album mostly live—an ideal method for capturing their cult-status live show, which carries on the torch of acts like the Walkmen and the Fleshtones. Jazzhound is completely new territory for the group, too, with Araiza, who calls this album “probably the darkest one” he’s written lyrically, pushing his Ian Curtis-via-Bobby Darin baritone to new depths, particularly on scorchers like “Phantom Eyes” and “Bebop.” It’s also the first album with Cobiån acting—and thriving—in his new role as a full-time guitarist (the drum parts were written by him and played by session musician Paul Doyle), and the first since the departure of guitarist Dakota Boettcher as well.

Buttertones accomplish in two-plus minutes what many bands can't do over a whole album: offer evidence of both musical range and the imagination to carve a unique sound from those skills.” - LA Times “Devilishly dark and enigmatic energy that will inevitably lure you in.” - Paste "soulful sax and ripping surf riffs" - i-D

2020, and the scene is now: world in flames, deserts in permafrost, everyone in their own corners, looking down into their hands. Nothing in common. We can all see that the way it’s happening isn’t working, and for a lot of us, that’s okay, as long as it doesn’t rock our boat, we’ll cope. But for people who are invested in the future, any future – like Flat Worms – they’re out there, full time living, playing to change minds. And they’re not alone. Antarctica is the third Flat Worms album in the past four years. It reflects a situation that’s dire, but not hopeless. Since the release of their 2017 debut LP — even since last year’s “Into the Iris” mini-LP — the sound of the trio has hardened, with the polarities of psych and postpunk smelted into a brutal cobalt alloy. No doubt they’re aided by the Steve Albini-engineered sound rendered at Electric Audio, where the album was recorded and mixed (in collaboration with Steve Albini and Ty Segall) in six days. The rest of the evolution is down to Flat Worms, whose world view and musical viewpoint pulse with a remorseless drive and a sense of collaborative unity. Will Ivy’s cortex-scorching guitar leads are in united space with the full-body rhythm of Tim Hellman’s bass and Justin Sullivan’s drums. Their social comment, bleak, yet earnest, is leavened with bone dry humor (the title track’s isolation conundrums: “My dog is smiling as I drive her to the park / we sit together in the kitchen after dark / I ask her questions / She just barks”) and caustic pronouncements; a vision of the chaotic, dysfunctional contemporary landscape that recalls the tragicomic expressions of 100 Flowers and the indefatigable recitations of The Fall. Commitment. Intention. Collaboration. And a sense that we’re meant to enjoy what we’re doing. Even in the desert of Antarctica, Flat Worms are looking for the upside. Come join them!

JOHANNA WARREN GEMINI I & II

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com When asked what motivates her to make music, Johanna Warren responds immediately: “Music is vibration; it’s a direct way to affect matter. A song is a way to journey into places of discord and then resolve back into harmony.” The nomadic songwriter/multi-instrumentalist constructs complex, gossamer folk compositions that draw from the richness of the human experience and her own unique flavor of mysticism. Her 2015 sophomore album, nūmūn, found its way on to several notable year end lists and led Rolling Stone Magazine to name her a “Songwriter You Need to Know.” In 2016, Warren released Gemini I, the first of a pair of conceptually connected albums written and recorded in the throes of a rocky romantic relationship with another artist. “All the songs on both records are about a complicated three-year relationship with a Gemini man,” she says. “It was very much a ‘twin flame’ situation. We were working with bright light and intense shadow.” As a way to process this emotional chaos, Warren began to write in earnest as a form of self-therapy. Eschewing the more abstract lyricism of her earlier work, she began to create a suite of confessional songs about the blessing and the curse of romantic love.

The albums that resulted, Gemini I and Gemini II, are moody, bewitching records packed with layers of occult symbolism and personal mythology. Every song on Gemini I has a corresponding “twin” on II, linked by melodic motifs, lyrical content or production choices. Rather than the DIY recording setups that Warren and engineer/producer Bella Blasko had used previously, the Geminis were tracked at Dreamland studios in upstate New York. There, equipped with a sudden wealth of instruments and more sophisticated technology, Warren who arranges and plays nearly everything on her records, felt free to explore. This spirit of experimentation is evident on the records. The songs retain the hushed warmth of previous releases Fates and nūmūn, while expanding Warren’s sonic landscape in all directions. In celebration of her upcoming album Chaotic Good, out May 1st, Warren has partnered with Carpark and Wax Nine Records to reissue deluxe editions of Gemini I and II, including bonus tracks “The Garden” and “Maya” along with instrumental versions of the studio album. TRACKLISTING Twisting and Turning Leviathan Spine Altered States Untitled Epoch I Subsume Aurora Epoch II Collapse Remnants

"Altered States" is the debut album from Australian composer and sound designer Daniel McCagh. In sharp contrast to McCagh's commercial work for Huawei, Acura, and Volkswagen, "Altered States" is a detailed opening statement of experimental aural vignettes by an artist that has clearly spent the time to master his craft. Digitally manipulated acoustic instruments form the backbone for McCagh's wall-of-sound aesthetic painting pictures of bleak futures where the tracks dance, or more aptly, shiver their way to sharp collapse. In short, McCagh makes ambient music with teeth. A form of experimental music with soul, or faded formation of industrialized machine music shrouded by layers of aural gauze, each piece emotively twisting and turning in and out of focus. "Altered States" is a brilliant inaugural proclamation from artist to watch.

n April 2015, Kalmia Traver (Kalbells, Rubblebucket) had just come out of an intensive 2-month writing retreat with 27 songlets in hand, 10 of which would become Kalbells’ debut album Ten Flowers. Jeremy Malvin (Chrome Sparks) loved what she shared with him then, and the two began regular co-production sessions in his studio in Brooklyn, where classical percussion ensemble So Percussion also worked. Drawing inspiration from the abundance of acoustic soundmakers all around, Jeremy performed marimbas, cactus shakers, and massive bass drums, while Kal layered flute arpeggios, penny whistles, and saxophones through tape echo to make smooth harmonic waves of rainbow velvet layer cake. They pretended to be an orchestra. Lyrically, the Mothertime EP sees Kal processing themes she has been continually chewing on in the 6-year wake of surviving ovarian cancer and transforming a codependent

“Cool and Bendable” was inspired by a dream in which she held her yet-unborn child, but as Kal finished writing the song in the studio with Jeremy, she realized it was actually about holding herself, a body, a life. “Supple, strong, funny: a person, a being,” she says. “I also think I was celebrating in awe the general aliveness of our world, Earth.” “Mothertime,” is about her mother and their relationship, which she describes as her most cherished learning-grounds. “It’s about the bewildering beauty and uncanniness of the fact that we can keep growing & changing so much, cueing off each other across our two mobiusentwined lifetimes.” The EP’s final two tracks, “Precipice” and “Tremble,” are both about the struggle of being in a codependent relationship: the sadness of neglect, the zing of excitement during a bitter fight, the addictive explosion of energy that feels momentarily

LOST ON XANDU AVAILABLE NOW

Garage rock connoisseurs may remember the instrumental “Lost on Xandu” from The Fleshtones’ 2011 album Brooklyn Sound Solution for its distinctive guitarwork from the hands of the legendary Lenny Kaye. Eight years later, Lenny went back to the instrumental tune and crafted some lyrics that paint the scenery of an outer space landscape, adding his own vocals to the song and turning the track into something completely new. This reimagined version of “Lost on Xandu” with vocals was previously only available as a limited edition 45 single on cloudy orange vinyl for Record Store Day 2019. The vocal version of “Lost on Xandu” is found on the A-side, and the B-side features a dub-style rendition of the track (starring Peter Zaremba as Space Commander) titled “Lost on Xandu (Version).” Neither the vocal version nor dub version of “Lost on Xandu” have been previously available in any format.

“Bang Bang” has remained a curious single in the Squeeze discography, as it was nearly disowned by its songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. Even more curious, however, is renowned wizard (and true star) Todd Rundgren covering it for the fourth installment in the Swindles series. Rundgren takes the song down a electropop wormhole, transforming the tune into something completely unique from the original recording. “Bang Bang” was produced and engineered by Rundgren and Swindles-curator Steve Mandel and was previously only available as a limited edition 45 single for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019.
