Redeye Label of the Month Q&A Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight

This Issue: Cory Rayborn at Three Lobed Recordings Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix? The psychedelic/outsider underground is where TLR spends most of its time with another solid period of time in the realm of solo guitar. Head music? Out music? All of these labels fit. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now? When Three Lobed started the goal was to simply put out a record for one of my all-time favorite bands. A relatively low hurdle to clear, sure, but one that seems insurmountable when you’re on the other side of the divide. My passion for music and everything that surrounds it is – and has consistently historically been – pretty all-consuming so the fun of the label grew over time. With that, release schedules, edition sizes and more have picked up. Telling me ten years ago, let alone twenty, that the record would occupy the part of my life that it does now would seem totally unbelievable. How did you personally get started in the music industry? Music was the obvious choice for me in some ways, less so in others. Starting in early middle school I became obsessed with music. Constantly listening, learning – it was a central element of life. I wasn’t the musical sort myself so I gravitated towards various DIY activities throughout college – booking, taping, web work (after all, I was in college in the web’s nascent days of 1994-1998) and the like. Putting out a record was the natural extension of these obsessions. If I hated it, I’d just move on to the next thing. If it was fun I’d keep doing it. It’ll be twenty-two years later this year and it has constantly provided me with a lot of fun. When and where did the label begin? In the summer of 2000 I was ready to put out my first (and, for all I knew at that point in time, only) title. I had spoken with my good friends in the Philly psych mainstays Bardo Pond and they were down with me putting a 10” out for them. I started the ball rolling early that summer only to have the parts all come together about 10 days before I started law school orientation (in Chapel Hill, NC). Whoops. A quick scramble over those few days got everything assembled and shipped out of my apartment with the final few initial orders getting out the door on my second day of orientation. What is the meaning behind the name for the label? Three Lobed gets its name from one of the otherworldly Old Ones from the strange fiction of H.P. Lovecraft. (It goes without saying that TLR is not down with the darker human side of HPL.) How has the label changed since it started? How hasn’t it! Despite my first release being a 10”, CDs were the main name of the game for the label for the first several years and digital didn’t exist for a goodly period into the label but for low-res mp3s. TLR switched over to primarily being a vinyl label well in advance of the current trend. That said, it has constantly been an effort to do what felt most fun and true, definitions that have changed over the last couple of decades. Beyond formats, there are a lot of ways in which the label has remained the same and true to the original roots. I work a lot with friends and folks who I have known for a long period of time. Hell, there are multiple artists with five or more releases in the catalog and a few with around ten titles. Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. Three Lobed is a bit of an odd setup in that it is entirely a one-man operation, me (Cory Rayborn)! I outsource stuff like design work and mastering but beyond that if you need anything – general correspondence, A&R, manufacturing coordination, fulfillment, etc. – you’re working with me. I’m probably a glutton for punishment but it’s the way that I try to keep the label consistent with my vision for the titles, look, feel, etc. Or maybe I just have a hard time letting go of anything? Ha. What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? It won’t come as a surprise to say supply chain issues and the throttling of the vinyl manufacturing industry. Couple those two factors with unprecedented demand and it was hard to ever get a read on what to do. Overorder while you have the time on the press and possible choke on extra stock? Underorder and wait six plus months for a restock? No good answer in the bunch *other than* the fact that folks were (and still are) buying records hand over fist. Hard to complain about that part, right? Good problems to have in the big picture. Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases? While I have never lived in Philadelphia I have long been drawn to the people from our scene who live or hailed at some point from there. How much of this is due to the original label origins with Philly heroes Bardo Pond? Who truly knows to that end but I do know that there are over thirty titles with Philly ties in the TLR catalog. North Carolina, where I have lived my whole life, probably doesn’t even have ten. Life can be unexpected sometimes, you know?

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? While it is next to impossible to pick between one’s children, sometimes you have to. It isn’t a secret that I have a deep, passionate connection with the Gunn-Truscinski Duo’s “Ocean Parkway” album from 2012. I go deep with everything Steve Gunn touches but the Duo records with John Truscinski just take me somewhere special. The title track on this one is so joyous, deep and giving. I’ll listen anytime. What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? For a long time I didn’t feel the need to do any sort of color or variant releases with TLR titles. Then I started to let color vinyl be something that could pop up from time to time for reissues to differentiate them from the original pressings. Somewhere along the line I eventually relented to and started putting some titles out in color variants. Never anything too crazy here – I don’t want the LP aesthetics to ever distract from the overall experience with the actual music contained within. Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs?? I’ve generally been opposed to cassettes on the whole and never saw it as a business sector to get into. That said, my next release is one where the band (Sonic Youth) really wanted to do a cassette so we did one. It has done well (it is a Sonic Youth release, after all), *but* I don’t think it is an indication of the TLR future as much as a one off. I also know better than to never say “never”. How would you describe the average fan of the label? I can honestly say that I have some of **the** best fans out there. Over time I consistently find them enthusiastic, searching, loyal, open to new things and kind. I am fortunate to count several folks who I met through the guise of buying records from TLR who have become deep and true friends. It is one of the places where being a one man operation is so rewarding as I have direct interactions with so many folks ranging from the people who have snagged every single title from me from title one to the present to folks I consistently see at shows. Those interactions make all of the hard work rewarding. In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days? Exceptionally important. No industry or part of life is exempt from the need to get things right. We collectively only get one shot at this so we have to do it properly. I’m constantly trying to nibble around the edges and reduce as much waste and impact as possible from the process but there’s so much more to do. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now? Hands down I would say divided attention. It gets all of us in every phase of life – too many things calling at all of us from too many directions all of the time. In particular with respect to the music industry, there are so many things calling for everyone’s time, let alone the sheer number of releases that come out weekly. How do you stand out in a crowd? How do you find your audience? How do you hold attention in a world where streaming is so prevalent? Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance: Eternal love to Chaz’s Bull City Records, Harvest Records, Record Grouch, Deadly Wax and everyone out there in the trenches.

HIATUS KAIYOTE GRAMMY NOMINATED ALBUM MOOD VALIANT GRAMMY NOMINATED HIATUS KAIYOTE’S MOOD VALIANT IS AVAILABLE ON 1LP, INDIE 1LP, DELUXE 1LP, AND CD. ON SALE FOR 5% OFF LP AND 10% OFF CD. SALE ENDS APRIL 1ST. Comprised of Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keys), and Perrin Moss (drums), the thrice-Grammy-nominated group Hiatus Kaiyote released their new album Mood Valiant on June 25th 2021 via Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune. The new project comes after the band has been sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Chance The Rapper, and Drake — with whom Nai Palm collaborated with on Scorpion. The band travelled to Rio de Janeiro in late-2019 to work on the album with legendary Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai, which led to the infectious lead single “Get Sun” (feat. Arthur Verocai). The album was a six year journey, but is more of a hustle than a hiatus — it is an act of love, of courage, of brother-and-sisterhood, of altered perspective. “Life-affirming, genre-defying cosmic soul” - New York Times

Luther and Cody Dickinson started North Mississippi AllstArs in 1996 as a loose collective of like-minded second-generation musicians who shared a local repertoire and regional style. Over the years the lineup shifted by design, and each NMA record offered up a different combination of collaborators. set sAil finds the brothers working with Jesse Williams on bass and Lamar Williams, Jr. for the first time. set sAil, North Mississippi AllstArs’s thirteenth album, follows 2019’s Up ANd rolliNg, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2021. set sAil continues the band’s tradition of creating roots music that displays remarkable variety. With their latest record, NMA are able to build upon their self-described sound of Primitive Modernism - a melding of the new and the old, traditional and futuristic, crafted lyrics and improvisational music. GRATEFUL DEAD: SELLING POINTS

• The Dick’s Picks Series of Grateful Dead Live Recordings Followed the Band’s Long, Strange Trip Across All Eras, Venues, and Styles • Having Reissued the Complete Series on CD, Real Gone Music Is Now Putting Selected Volumes Out on Vinyl for the First Time • Previous Dick’s Picks Vinyl Releases from Real Gone Have Been Among the Most Coveted Titles in the Label’s History • But of the Four Previous Vinyl Releases, None Have Hailed from What Was Arguably the Dead’s Peak Year of Touring, 1973 • The Concert Captured on Dick’s Picks Vol. 19—10/19/73 Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma City, OK Not Only Took Place in 1973 but Also Was the First Show of the Group’s Hallowed Midwestern Tour That Year • With the Release of Wake of the Flood Just a Few Days Prior, Vol. 19 Finds the Band Invigorated with a Wealth of Fresh Material to Explore, Highlighted by Stellar Renditions of “Stella Blue” and “Eyes of the World” • The “Dark Star”/ “Mind Left Body Jam”/ “Morning Dew” Transition Presents the Band at Its Improvisational Best • And “Playing in the Band” Is Simply Sublime • Mastered for Vinyl from the Original Tapes by the Set’s Original Mastering Engineer, Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering

Dick’s Picks Vol. 19—10/19/73 Oklahoma City Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma City, OK (Limited, Hand-Numbered, 180-Gram 6-LP Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: APRIL 1, 2022 Our previous LP releases of Grateful Dead concerts from the Dick’s Picks series have encompassed the years of 1969, 1972, 1974, and 1977…but there’s one year on that list that is conspicuous by its absence. That’s right...we have yet to release a concert on vinyl from what is arguably the peak year of Dead touring, 1973! And what was the peak tour from that year? Yup, the fall Midwest tour. So, the choice of Dick’s Picks Vol. 19 as our next vinyl “trip” was an easy one. It was the first concert of the tour, and in fact at the time it was the first full 1973 concert to be released. More importantly, with the release of Wake of the Flood just a few days prior, it finds the band invigorated with a wealth of fresh material to explore, highlighted by stellar (no pun intended) renditions of “Stella Blue” and “Eyes of the World.” And the two sidelong numbers on the set, “Playing in the Band” and “Dark Star” (which leads into a dazzling “Mind Left Body Jam” and a stirring “Morning Dew”), achieve sheer improvisational bliss. The original sound mix on this one is superb, and we’ve taken great care to preserve it and even improve upon it for this release, with mastering for vinyl from the original tapes by the set’s original mastering engineer, Jeffrey Norman, lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music, and a 180-gram black vinyl pressing at Gotta Groove Records. We’ve also included an insert sporting the graphics from the original release, housed inside a two-piece hardshell box that we’ve hand-numbered. Limited to 4500 6-LP sets…and if previous experience is any guide, they’re gonna go fast!

Doris Day

Early Day —Rare Songs from the Radio 1939-1950 STREET DATE: APRIL 1, 2022 Wanna know—and wanna hear—how Doris Day became one of the biggest multimedia stars on the planet? This 24-track collection carefully culls Doris’ finest and rarest performances from over a decade of appearances on the radio, where her star first really began to shine. First, we begin with a 1944 rendition of one of her signature songs, “Sentimental Journey,” with the big band that really vaulted her into the stratosphere, The Les Brown Orchestra. Then we double back all the way to her very first radio performances with local Cincinnati bandleader Barney Rapp, who was the man who urged Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff to change her name to Doris Day. After that, we’re off and running with more mid-‘40s appearances with Les Brown, 1950 duets on The Bob Hope Show with Bob (“Sunshine Cake”) and Jimmy Wakely (“Slippin’ Around”), and a lot more songs from The Bob Hope Show that reunited Doris with Les Brown, who served as the show’s musical director. We’ve found period pictures galore for the package—which, by the way, was put together with the full knowledge and consent of the late, great lady herself—and have commissioned liner notes by Joe Marchese that chart the steep trajectory of Doris Day’s career through these radio recordings. Remastered, like our other Doris Day rarities collections, by Mike Milchner at SonicVision…a perfect way to celebrate the Doris Day centennial!

By far the most unexpected hit record of 2011 was the 29th and final studio album from an 89 year-old Doris Day. My Heart hit the charts in the U.S. and went all the way up to #9 in the U.K., triumphantly capping a legendary singing and acting career. But this record and its chart success was, if you’ll excuse the pun, no mere sentimental journey. The heart of My Heart is a series of songs recorded by Doris in the mid-‘80s as background for scenes featuring her with various animals on the Doris Day’s Best Friends television show, many of them written by her son, Terry Melcher, whose production credits, of course, include The Byrds and Beach Boys. Melcher also lends a bravura vocal turn to “Happy Endings” and is the subject of a heartfelt preamble by Doris on “My Buddy.” And without question Terry’s influence lay behind her superb, jaunty cover of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Daydream.” In short, My Heart was a touching, tuneful love letter from Doris to her deceased son; and now, in honor of her centennial, we’re bringing it to LP for the first time, remastered for vinyl by Mike MIlchner at Sonic Vision, and pressed in green vinyl complete with an insert featuring liner notes. A beautiful record from a beautiful lady.

1977 was a whirlwind year for Melissa Manchester. The singer-songwriter toured North America’s arenas and amphitheaters that summer with Leo Sayer before launching a fall solo tour that attracted the attention of none other than Bob Dylan, who attended the Minneapolis date. Melissa played Carnegie Hall, appeared on network television specials, taped a memorable commercial with Ella Fitzgerald, and released her sixth album, Singin’. But that wasn’t all. On October 30, 1977 at Gainesville, Florida’s Great Southern Music Hall, Melissa recorded her first live album. The electrifying double record captured her in front of an appreciative college audience, leading a smoking-hot, seven-piece band of rock, R&B, and jazz veterans including two KISS collaborators–saxophonist/keyboardist Tom Saviano (Dolly Parton, Earth Wind & Fire) and bassist Bill Bodine (Van Morrison, Cher)–plus drummer Art Rodriguez (Rickie Lee Jones, Manhattan Transfer) and Melissa’s discovery Lenny Castro, now one of the most-recorded percussionists of all time. Yet Arista Records shockingly consigned the album to the shelf, where it’s remained unheard…until now. Melissa Manchester’s Live ’77 makes its long-overdue debut from Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records as a deluxe 2-CD set. Its 21 songs–joyful, sensual, romantic, optimistic, soulful, spellbinding, and ultimately empowering–spoke directly to the thoughts and emotions of the young audience and have proven timeless over the ensuing decades. These include her hits “Midnight Blue,” “Better Days,” and the song Bob Dylan admired, “Just You and I,” as well as the now-standard “Come in from the Rain,” fan favorites “We’ve Got Time,” “Happy Endings,” and “Caravan,” and spirited covers of such beloved tunes as “I Wanna Be Where You Are,” “Rescue Me,” and “Monkey See, Monkey Do.” Live ’77 also premieres Melissa’s only recording anywhere of the blues classic “Hi-Heel Sneakers.” This landmark release has been mastered from the original tapes by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, and boasts a deluxe booklet with rare photos and new liner notes by Joe Marchese based on a fresh interview with the artist and including exclusive quotes from the legendary Clive Davis. Appropriately, Melissa closed this concert of pop, rock, and soul sounds with “No One’s Ever Seen This Side of Me.” Now, in time for its 45th anniversary, you too can finally hear this thrilling side of Melissa Manchester.

SELLING POINTS • William “Bill” Loose Was a Prolific Composer Whose Work You Have Heard a Lot More Than You Know • Composed Cues for Capitol’s Vast Music Library That Ended Up Being Used on Dozens of TV Shows • Went On to Compose Themes for Shows like The Hollywood Squares and Serving as Musical Director for The Doris Day Show • But in the Late ‘60s, His Career Took a Sharp Left Turn

William “Bill” Loose is one of those cult composers whose work you’ve heard much more than you’ve heard of the man himself. During WWII, he led the U.S. Army Air Forces Orchestra in New York, and then was hired in the mid-‘50s to be in charge of Capitol’s extensive musical cue library (at one time two dozen TV shows were using his cues)! From there he branched out into composing themes for shows like The Hollywood Squares and serving as Musical Director for The Doris Day Show. Starting in the late ‘60s, though, Loose’s career took a sharp left turn, as he composed soundtracks for some of the most notorious “B” movies of all time including the outlaw biker film The Rebel Rousers and Jack Hill’s The Swinging Cheerleaders. But what lends his career true cult status is without a doubt the work he did for sexploitation director Russ Meyer; Loose composed the soundtracks for many of Meyer’s films, but unfortunately only these two, Vixen and Cherry…& Harry & Raquel ever were released on LP. Which is too bad…each is a rollicking mix of rock and roll, absurdist program music, bump-and-grind jazz, and old-fashioned widescreen, string-heavy vistas. Real Gone Music is proud to present vinyl reissues of these cult classic soundtracks, each mastered in 45 R.P.M. for maximum audio pleasure!

PASTOR CHAMPION

(Nov 23, 1946 - Dec 28, 2021)

This album is a tribute to Pastor Wylie Champion, who died while we were in the process of releasing this, his first record, and his wife, Mother Champion, who died a few months earlier.

ReLeASe DATe: APRIL 1, 2022 FORMAT: LP/CD CATALOG NUMBeR: LBOP0096

We met Pastor Champion a few years ago while we were putting together another release, The Time for Peace Is Now: Gospel Music About Us. We found him in a collection of YouTube videos from the 37th Street Baptist Church in Oakland, California, put together by the pastor there, Bishop Dr. W.C. McClinton. There was quite a lot of talent in those videos, and among them was Pastor Champion whom we liked so much that we decided to make a record with him. Pastor Champion wasn’t like any other pastor you’ve ever met. As an itinerant preacher, a carpenter, and a father of five, he made a name for himself traveling up and down the California coast with his electric guitar. He traveled alone and he played alone, well into his seventies. The easiest way to describe him would be as an outsider gospel artist. Other than these bare facts, we never learned much about him—except that he was also the brother of the well-known soul singer Bettye Swann. In fact, most of what we knew about him we got from his sister’s Wikipedia page. We decided that because we met Champion through the 37th Street Baptist Church, we would record him there too. We recorded him live on a two-track Nagra reel to reel, as we wanted the album to be analog in the style of traditional gospel recordings. Over the course of two evenings (when the workday was done), Champion taught his band—musicians who had never played together before—a handful of songs, a small selection of the nearly 2,000 fragments of songs and sermons that he regularly performed. We listened in as they all got more familiar with the material and each other over time. At some point, we mentioned to Champion that he would have to be interviewed by someone to write notes for the album. He wasn’t too pleased with this idea, saying he’d had a hard life and he didn’t want to talk about it. Over the next few months, we kept asking Champion to talk to someone about his life. He told us that he didn’t want to talk about growing up in Louisiana, his mother being accosted by the Klan, or that his father was a gambler. He didn’t want to talk about being jailed for 90 days for using a whites only bathroom, being in gangs or having a street name. We told him that was fine—he could talk about what he wanted to talk about. And he told us that he didn’t want to talk about anything.

The sessions (services) were documented by filmmaker Adam Wissing, whose films will be released throughout the spring. The 37th Street Baptist Church in Oakland has been home to the best gospel in the Bay Area since 1946, and if you are ever around there, then you should stop by. To learn more about them and this project, please visit TheStormOfLife.org. This is the first of several forthcoming gospel soul records from Luaka Bop, born out of their much celebrated World Spirituality Classics series. Press is handled by Pitch Perfect. If you’d like to reach them, write to Sam McAllister at sam@pitchperfectpr.com To learn more about Pastor Champion’s life and this recording that we made together, please visit PastorChampion.com.

You know, there are times when you make a record where it’s already made in your mind before you start. But then in the end, the record you thought you were making is not the record you made. We spent years puzzling over this one, trying to figure out what it was saying, who it was for, and how to get people to pay attention to it. But Champion knew that this record wasn’t going to be for everyone. He didn’t really care. The important part for him was just getting the message out there in the same way that he always had, travelling alone with his electric guitar. “I want to say what I mean,” he said, “be practical, precise, to the point, and, at the same time, diplomatic.” In other words, he just wanted to be a good man. God bless Pastor Champion and Mother Champion, peace be with them and their family. Love to all.

STUDIO ONE DUB 18th Anniversary 3 New Special Editions

“Soul Jazz’s Studio One Dub collection cannot help but to serve as loving tribute to Sir Coxsone Dodd. This giant of a man not only defined popular music for the isle of Jamaica, but for the world over, his innovations laying the foundations for hip-hop, dance and post-rock … Dodd's dubs drew on such a fertile ground of classic Jamaican rhythms that he rarely missed. As such, it's difficult to find fault with the versions presented here and many of these cuts are ridiculously rare … This burning set celebrates Dodd's extraordinary life by mashing time and space until it's joyfully suspended. Alabaster DePlume GOLD GOLD, the follow-up to Alabaster DePlume's widely-acclaimed, 2020-released cinematic instrumental LP To Cy & Lee: Instrumentals Vol. 1, introduces the world to the artist’s truest self. That is... though DePlume’s now known across the globe as the saxophonist who created that collection of wonderful, wordless music, he’s most known to fervent fans in his home zone of London, UK, as an outspoken poet and orator, beloved for his inspiring words of encouragement and sing-a-long-able songs about vulnerability, humanity, and courage. GOLD is a sprawling double album that finds DePlume expressing both sides of his artistic character beautifully: (1) an articulate singer and songwriter who invokes the melodious crooning of Donovan as much as Devendra Banhart or Syd Barrett, whose tunes are almost like mini-sermons, full of existential comedy and spiritual enlightenment; and (2) a brilliant composer of simple, soothing, and viscerally nourishing instrumental melodies, with a gift for expanding them into intrepid collective improvisations, led by a delicate and distinguished saxophone tone that conjures the fluttery sweetness of the great Ethiopique Getatchew Mekurya.

µ-Ziq says hello again with 'Goodbye'. The six track EP is the first in a series of releases by Mike Paradinas this year, which are all centred around the 25th Anniversary Edition of 'Lunatic Harness’, his classic 1997 album.

Inspired by going back through the archives while he was remastering the Lunatic Harness reissue, 'Goodbye' sees Mike revisiting the nineties, taking on jungle and it's precursor jungle tekno and upgrading them with the benefit of hindsight and contemporary software. Imbued with Mike's lush sense of melody and his knack for striking contrasts (don't be shocked to hear maudlin piano, 303 and amens in the same track), 'Goodbye' approaches these old genres like a sandpit, and stretches them in directions only Mike might take.

• Limited edition COLOR pressing on PURPLE vinyl Chock full of junk store percussion, is this to be considered inspired by call and response old time Gospel, or is it the Gospel for modern folk pop lovers? This inspired recording of strings, mandolin, drums, "whatever you can get your hands on" percussion, guitars, banjo, bass, organ, and open vocal harmonies, is deceptively loose-sound sounding on first listen. As the listener dives deeper into the record it becomes pretty apparent that this musical mongrel of a band is pretty precise, but feels like it was hewn from dirt of the land, and sounds ragged and burnt from a lifetime of tilling. The lyrics are slyly smart, artfully sinister, and built for audience participation... and while the rolling high end mandolin and banjo pluck their ways through countermelodies, there's that perfectly tattered jumble of percussion that sets the knee to bouncin' and the hands together to clap along. Find the lot of players in front of a crowd that is jubilantly singing along with the backing chorus, and you'll find the whiskey drinkers, beer swillers, the devoted Tom Waits fans who wish they could get as close to him as they can to this band. This record was incredibly fun to record. Singer/guitartist, Ryan Sollee moved to Portland, OR in the fall of 2003 from Alaska with his band at the time The Born Losers, which played a mix of rock and roll and punk. Feeling inspired by the blues, county and gospel music he was listening to, Sollee formed The Builders And The Butchers with other eclectic and like-minded musicians he had met around Portland. The Builders And The Butchers practiced a few times and played their first shows during the Halloween weekend of 2005. With little expectations, the band was surprised that after only a few shows people were singing along and responding passionately to their music. A lot of these first shows were played downtown outside of bars and clubs. PRESS QUOTES “The Builders and the Butchers initially turned heads with their immersive performance style—employing singing in the round sans mic, recruiting the crowd as back-up vocalists, traipsing off into the street in the middle of the closing song. But shorn of the theatrics, the band’s music easily holds its own. The record traces the course of a traditional Butchers set, from stripped-down crowd-grabbing opener “The Night, Pt. 1” to lovely sing-along gospel closer “Find Me in the Air.” – WILLAMETTE WEEK (Best Local Albums of 2007) “The original intention of the Builders and the Butchers was to make funeral music, but on the way to the cemetery something changed. Instead of heads hanging low and mournful elegies to the deceased, this local ensemble turned the funeral plot into a graveside party by way of the junkyard. Liberally grabbing from bluegrass, country, and punk—armed with just about any instrument they came across—this band has accidentally stumbled upon something incredible: a very distinctive and interactive way to create and present music.” – PORTLAND MERCURY

OMGay, Team Dresch is releasing an actual NEW SONG! It’s been 19 years since the band has released new material - 25 years since the making of Personal Best, when this particular configuration of players (Jody Bleyle, Donna Dresch, Kaia Wilson and Marcéo Martinez) recorded together. Your Hands My Pockets: Donna Dresch, in her typical Team Captain spirit, busts out riffs that are rife with her awesome signature grunge/punk/melodic catchiness, Jody and Kaia trade off on vocal duties like they’re in some frantic singing relay race, and Marcéo slams the toms around like he learned to drum from both Mel Brown and bam-bam (please note, Marcéo actually took drum lessons from Mel Brown in the 80’s). While “Your Hands” is an undeniable pop/punk song, it is also brimming with bristle and depth, conjuring feelings of longing, angst, desire. When Jody sings “Oh I wanna want to be wrapped around, to wrap around” there is NO ONE who can’t relate to this feeling of reaching out to one another for connection, touch, and love. Team Dresch KEEPS IT REAL (gay) with their harmonious musical chemistry, queercore spirit, and attention to detail in their musicianship - the alchemy of these humans is clearly still alive and dancing, you know it baby. Leaving behind an awareness that something once occupied the space you now feel. You can sense it. Indulging that resonance, the wider understanding of dynamics, gives Crumbling an incredible sense of depth. It’s as much about the space around the sound as the sound itself, the awareness of that is what sets it apart.” -GoldFlakePaint, on Crumbling The pre-cursor to Mid-Air Thief's cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, Gongjoon Doduk exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes. Gongjoon Doduk is a compelling accomplishment of both composition and production, bending as it does to its unique contours of consonance and dissonance, always resolving to a place of calm and beauty. redeye distribution 505 Eno Street Hillsborough, NC 27278 harrellp@redeyeworldwide.com

Since 2014, their ever-evolving sound has incorporated stylistic touchstones from math rock to ambient to emo, exploring themes of place, self, and culture through a dialect entirely their own. Michi Tassey (keys, synth bass) and Chris Lee-Rodriguez (guitar) exchange vocal leads regularly, shifting perspectives and ranges as their songs cascade through varied musical worlds, refracting their thematic questions concerned with identity. The album’s lead single, “Try Lingual,” sees the quartet at their most all-encompassing. Thematically, it’s an apt setting for exploring Lee-Rodriguez’s personal struggles with learning Spanish, and Tassey's with Japanese, in order to better communicate with their families and communities. Trumpeter Matt Hull’s jazzy athleticism often sings in unison with his melodic counterparts, but when let loose between and around the beats, Hull’s calculated, eruptive wailing mirrors the eureka moments that abound when learning a new language. Reflections on identity permeate the entirety of Really From, whose name is drawn from a question often thrust at the band’s mixed raced members—”where are you really from?” The foreboding phrase conjures a complex web of daunting subject matter, but it’s nothing new to the band. It is their lived experience, and so it is woven organically into their emo-adjacent, jazz-inflected experimental rock fabric, crucially blurring the line between the Personal and the Political. redeye distribution 505 Eno Street Hillsborough, NC 27278 harrelp@redeyeworldwide.com

NIGHT

PALACE

Night Palace is a shocking alchemy: achingly intense nostalgia meets frothy anticipation of what’s beyond the garden wall. It’s hard to believe Night Palace’s first album Diving Rings is not a soundtrack to a different world. You find yourself picturing it: a moonlit-gilded diorama of frontwoman Avery Draut’s dreams and memories. The album was recorded by engineer-producer Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, of Montreal), with additional engineering from Andy LeMaster (Better Oblivion Community Center, Azure Ray). The result is a unique brand of atmospheric pop, evoking artists like Broadcast, Alvvays, Vashti Bunyan & Mort Garson. ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼ ◼

Jason Quever has been releasing timeless dream pop as Papercuts since 2004; his new album Past Life Regression is a journey into the dreamier reaches of psychedelic folk-pop that digs deep into influences as wide-ranging as The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Spiritualized, Echo & The Bunnymen, Leonard Cohen and late 60s pop of various flavors. Jason's song-craft, arranging and production are immaculate as always, reflecting his broad experience and enlivened by his move back home to the San Francisco Bay Area. The results are beguiling, from the lush sunshine pop harmonies of first single "I Want My Jacket Back" to the trippy farfisa-driven spacepop of "Lodger" to the gorgeous, Bunnymen-tinged "Palm Sunday.” It's remarkable that after more than 15 years he's writing his best songs and in "Past Life Regression" has made his finest record. Gorgeous, perfectly constructed chamber pop for the very unusual times we're living through.

New album by Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard. now known simply as MWWB. ‘The Harvest’ is the band’s fourth album, and it is shot through with the trademark heavy MWWB sound, and their unique blend of metal and shoegaze. However it also sees the band adding more experimentation, a progressive approach, and going a bit more left field conceptually. Nine tracks flowing into one another. Space age riff monsters segueing into shorter musical interludes, where John Carpenter rubs shoulders with Pink Floyd and a maelstrom of moog and mellotron. There are surprises, and of course a bucketload of heavy shit.

‘Oblok Magellana’ and its spooky atmospherics set the scene. before things really kick in with the riffs of ‘The Harvest’. A grooving Sabbathian chug intros Jessica Ball - her voice simultaneously sweet yet dark; almost neofolk. ‘Interstellar Wrecking’ is a nugget of John Carpenter-esque drama, ‘Logic Bomb’ is a fat fuzzed-up ride through light and shade guitar/vocal interplay. ‘Betrayal’ with its freaky spoken word and four on the floor kick it’s almost a dance track. ‘Altamira’ is epic, adding large doses of psych into a melodic concoction of dreampop and metal. ‘Let’s Send The Bastards Whence They Came’ is another little gem. A plaintive repeating synth figure that builds with bass, drums, mellotrons and synths into ‘Strontium’ which rounds off the album’s ‘heavy’ numbers. Finally Jessica strips things back to a distorted guitar and voice on ‘Moonrise’. MWWB are a thrilling proposition. They demonstrate that you can seamlessly mix crushing power, experimentation and delicate vulnerability into something that transcends any genre.

Gringo Records LP WAAT079LP 5056321635624

Holodrum are a new disco-infused synth-pop group, who feature members of Hookworms, Yard Act, Cowtown, Virginia Wing, Drahla and more. This the 7 piece’s debut album, but the interlocking grooves and hot headiness of their repeato-rock-via-CBGBs dopamine hits have in one way or other been fermenting for years. Ultimately the core of the group comes from Shjipstone and his former Hookworms bandmates Benn, Nash and Wilkinson. The vision of a large live electronic ensemble formed quickly. Friends were added: Duffin and Nuttall who was keen to resurrect the double percussion interplay that he and Nash had been exploring as part of motorik trio Nope joined first. Then animator and VIDE0 singer Garner crystallised the line-up by joining on vocals.. “It makes sense we take inspiration from bands like Tom Tom Club and Liquid Liquid; they were trying to help people to party at a point when New York was quite a scary and dangerous place we’re doing the same, albeit in the face of a decaying world.” Opening cut 'Lemon Chic' sets the stall for an album heavy on euphoria, built atop crisp interplaying percussion and acid-flecked grooves. At times Shjipstone provides a raw counterpoint on vocals, while elsewhere - like on the strutting, swirling disco of 'Free Advice' and 'Low Light'’s late night ping pong synths - the pair indulge in playful call and response as the instrumentation builds and contorts around them. 'Stage Echo' provides a respite of sorts halfway through, a swirling, fever dream of a track that peaks with big squelchy frequencies and cavernous reverb, before the album returns to its repetitious exercises in body-moving catharsis underpinned at all times by a relentlessly propulsive rhythm section.

From the shadows of Slovenia, Shadow Universe is an instrumental music project, creating breathtaking cinematic soundscapes from post-rock, neoclassical/ambient and post-metal elements. This is their third album. Formed in 2017 by Peter Dimnik and Žan Šebrek, Shadow Universe merge contrasting textures of shimmering ambient soundscapes and heavy anxious darkness to portray the diversity of nature and life on earth and beyond. Opening track Organism, which portrays the coherence of forming organisms; from a vast universe itself down to the tiniest building particles of it, sets the tone with its slow, tense build to crushing, exhilarating peaks, Don’t Look at It and You’ll See It evokes free-flowing spontaneity through beautiful cascading piano and emotive violin, towering guitars, and soaring synths. Masterfully harnessing both the quiet and the loud, Hymn for the Giants glorifies our almighty and precious trees, with moments of calm cut apart by vast swathes of brutal, yet considered, cacophony, Losing Home’s portentous, droning synths and trumpet ratchet up the suspense, while on Antares Goes Supernova the band carve out layer upon layer of affirming and effecting riffs, each one more powerful than the last. Season of Eternal Maze wraps up the album with a meditative piano and harmonium, wide guitar driven melodies and guides you to your inner maze. 1. Organism 2. Don’t Look at It and You’ll See It 3. Noon Garden is an exotic psych-pop odyssey from one of the founding members of Flamingods. Drawing on worldly sounds from the likes of Francis Bebey and Dur Dur Band to Shintaro Sakamoto, tearing up the sonic rule book and conjuring up a distant land where you find yourself cutting loose to grooves that meander their way through a wide spectrum of African disco, funk, exotica and psychedelia.. British born with Nigerian & Jamaican heritage, Prest spent his childhood living in Bahrain surrounded by people, like himself, who were all living on an island away from their homeland. Seeing the world from a young age and the experience of 10 years of globe-trotting touring with Flamingods are imprinted on his new project and have been a huge influence on shaping Noon Garden’s tropical adventurism. As a talented multiinstrumentalist Charles has written, self-produced and played all the parts himself. Noon Garden says of the album: "This debut was an experiment to get to know myself better.. Writing music is a therapeutic process for me and it’s taken about eight years on and off to finish this album by myself, to try understand what it was exactly that I wanted to say lyrically and explore sonically. The album’s lyrics have shapeshifted so much with time but they take a curious look at the human experience; in my case growing up and soaking up a lot of cultures from an early age in the Middle East, the UK and briefly in Singapore.. All of this told through the lens of psychedelia which has always given me a sense of possibility..” Side A 1. Beulah Spa 2. Decca Divine 3. Desiree 4. Budaiya 5. Annapurna Guest House Side B 6. The “in-name only” United States and Kingdom’s divisions are more raw and splintered than ever before. And it's from this place of division that the USA’s PSYCHIC GRAVEYARD and SKiN GRAFT Records have joined with the UK’s USA NAILS and BOX Records to form “Split”. Having been remixed by the likes of MSTRKRFT, LIARS and SECRET FUN CLUB, Psychic Graveyard are no strangers to collaboration. Here they determinedly ease layer upon cacophonous layer to their methodically set stage before burning it to the ground. As with their previous full lengths, the songs were recorded with Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket. The six cuts served up by slabby noise-rock / angular post-punk / dissonant no-wave cognoscenti USA Nails feature notes that work, notes that don't work, wonky out of tune ping-pong guitars, dumb business riffs, and shitty guitar solos while musing over clinically medicated anxiety, internet commentators and Orwellian data practices. Although he didn't realize it at the time, drummer Tom Brewins broke his arm just before the band recorded with Wayne Adams at Bear Bites Horse in London. He got better, but maybe the rest of us won’t.

PLUCKED FROM THE OUTER LIMITS OF THE SPANISH UNDERGROUND BY DJ TRUJILLO COMES RITMO FANTASÍA

OVERVIEW: The 21 track selection curated by Trujillo, a Venezuelan producer, DJ and record collector based in Berlin, explores the forgotten corners of the 1980s and early 90s Spanish music scene. Veering through early bleep and hip house, electro, boogie, Iberian pop and much more, it has broad appeal to both Balearic heads and diggers alike. Serendipitously, the cover art for the compilation is an original work by Yves Uro, a figurehead of Ibiza’s party scene from the 70s and 80s and whose visionary poster artwork became representative of the white isle. While some of the artists or producers on the compilation went on to have notable careers, many of the tracks selected here represent “one-offs” for the artists, and on occasion the labels as well. These sometimes self-released, privately-pressed productions, on short-lived imprints with names like Cantos and Prismatic, document the nascent clubland communities - from the capital, to major cities to the north, and east, and also smaller locales, coastal towns such as Marbella, Gijón, and Cádiz. Ritmo Fantasía is the result of over a decade’s worth of record collecting by DJ Trujillo, searching out bespoke stores, markets, and dealers. For the first time ever, it brings to light and groups together some hidden gems from an era that without it, would likely remain hidden from view.

FALLE NIOKE TEAMS UP WITH BAND MEMBERS FROM MICHAEL KIWANUKA AND SAULT FOR ODYSSEY INTO AFRO-DISCO, JAZZ AND GRUNGE

OVERVIEW: Born out of an impromptu post-pub jam session in Margate, the 5-piece group Pigeon swoops onto the scene with their blistering debut EP Yagana. As the tracks cross effortlessly between Afro-disco, grunge, no wave and jazz, the cohesive symbiotic relationship of the band members is obvious from the start. The powerful vocals of Guinean singer Falle Nioke are complemented by a wealth of talent from Graham Godfrey on drums, Steve Pringle on keys, Tom Dream on guitar and Josh Ludlow on bass. Having moved to the UK from West Africa in 2018, Falle Nioke has recently been in the spotlight following recent collaborations with Ghost Culture which were supported by indie radio and BBC 6 Music playlisters. On Yagana, he continues to sing in a multitude of languages, but this time shifts towards a more organic musical direction, showcasing his incredible versatility as a vocalist. This new path can be attributed to the pedigree of the rest of the group – including veteran musicians Steve Pringle and Graham Godfrey who are key members of Michael Kiwanuka’s band, Godfrey also performing with Little Simz, Cleo Sol and SAULT, among others.

The Yagana EP is an emotionally-charged offering, exploring themes of lust, saudade, homesickness, and hope for peace. The title track ‘Yagana’ translates to “it’s been a while”, and though its up-tempo disco rhythm and wild synth solos lend a cheerful disposition, the lyrics describe a melancholic yearning for Africa. Recorded in a single weekend, Pigeon’s Yagana EP is a clear testament to each member’s skilfulness and varied experiences, creating a fullyfledged being that is greater than the sum of its parts. With an opening hand like this, we await with bated breath to see what more the humble Pigeon can bring to the world.

SWEDISH DUO TAKE NEW DIRECTION, SPANNING MULTIPLE GENRES AND FUSING ORGANIC SOUNDS WITH BEAT-HEAVY DANCE

OVERVIEW: Mount Liberation Unlimited mini-album touches upon a variety of moods, tones, beats and grooves that eschew genre and definition seamlessly blending acid disco, thumping techno, rock, dub, acoustic instrumentation and more. The pair have already amassed an impressive body of work, releasing on labels such as Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space, fellow Stockholmers Studio Barnhus, and CC:DISCO’s new compilation First Light Vol II, as well as remixes for Khruangbin, Maribou State and Mildlife. “The album is deeply rooted in a feeling of liminality,” say Mount Liberation Unlimited duo Tom and Niklas. “It’s music stuck in the liminal space between beach parties and worldwide isolation. A feeling of having your physical body in one place, with your mind still left on dancefloors on the other side of the now inaccessible world.” A sense of duality has always been key to the Swedes’ work. Since their first release in 2014, they have married a very physical rhythmic presence with their distinct take on electronic music that has also touched upon soul, jazz and disco. This exploration of organic dance music is, the pair say, “that sweet-spot interaction of human rhythm and electronic pulse.” ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ is no different in its quest to marry a deeply rhythmic essence with hypnotic and pulsating electronics, although it explores more beat-heavy terrain this time around. Recorded during a period when they had nothing else to do, the duo threw themselves into the studio and disappeared inside a record that they describe as like “a lingering psychedelic dream of waking up alone in a mossy Swedish forest wondering where the warm breeze went.”

Ben Lukas Boysen expands on 2020’s album Mirage with his brand new follow-up EP Clarion featuring a rare Kiasmos remix. Containing two brand new tracks from the Berlin-based electronic composer and producer, plus three very special remixes ranging as wide as from Hyperdub producer Foodman to Scottish post rock legends Mogwai, Clarion picks up where Mirage left off. The first single arrives in the shape of a rare Kiasmos remix of the title track, crafted by the Icelandic techno duo and Erased Tapes label mates Janus Rasmussen and Ólafur Arnalds. “Hearing how Kiasmos tamed the somewhat rough nature of Clarion and elevated it to a focussed and highly energised dream-like state made my day when I first heard the remix. The floating and driving rhythm of this version distils the original into a luxurious percussive meditation,” Boysen says. About the making of, Janus Rasmussen explains: “Sometimes remixes can be a joy to work on, especially when the original material is as strong as this one. Immediately after hearing the stems, the idea of the remix was so apparent. It was almost as if the song had already existed in this remixed form. The main melody is so catchy yet intriguing that it's a perfect fit for a Kiasmos remix.” The new material on this 6-track EP expands on themes of Ben’s 2020 album. “Mirage was about the diffusion and change of weight of elements within a piece as well as giving the instrumentalists featured, such as cellist Anne Müller, a different function and meaning. Lux and Plexus revisit this mindset, diving into granular, resyncing patterns and harmonic studies,” he adds. Clarion will be released both digitally and in a limited April 1.18. 12” vinyl edition on March

OVERVIEW The third Weserbergland album Sacrae Symphonia no.1 was inspired by music spanning more than 5 centuries: Venetian late renaissance music to the sonic exploration of avantgarde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and the German experimental rock music scene in the 70s and beyond. Some of the music of the sole 40 minute long track has been written, and some of it have been improvised. But all of it has been edited with heavy hands by composer/producer Ketil Vestrum Einarsen using code language and open source software on inexpensive single board computers. The end result is an album spanning athmospheric classical elements, experimental electronic music, full on noise rock assaults and anything inbetween. John McEntire (Tortoise etc.) used his vast experience with experimental music to mix the album in a way that binds the album together. MARKETING & PROMOTION / SELLING POINTS  For fans of classical music, krautrock and instrumental rock  For fans of Jaga Jazzist ,Arvo Part, John Cage etc...  The musicians on the album are very experienced and acclaimed.  Mix by John McEntire (Tortoise)

Levande Död's follow-up album to the highly praised 2019 debut album 'Upp Till Kramp' - properly or not titled 'Ingen Framtid' (eng. 'No Future'). Consistently recorded during the fall of 2020, in contrast to 'Upp Till Kramp' which was recorded over the series of multiple years, sessions & constellations - the record captures a time with it's surroundings in pandemonium, tightly made with the quartet who make out Levande Död today. The result - an album similar to nothing else before or, probably, to come! What you will recognize are the masterfully executed lyrics of E. Lahti, the musical intensity of yesteryears - with the maturity which two years & a pandemic greets you. All music by Levande Död. All lyrics by Erik Lahti. WET LEG WET LEG OVERVIEW After releasing two of the best singles of the year ("Chaise Longue" & "Wet Dream"), Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were catapulted from their confines on the Isle of Wight to sold out venues across the UK and packed-out tents at festivals causing giddy excitement wherever they went. Now, the duo are thrilled to unveil their debut album, Wet Leg.

Wet Leg was recorded and produced in the main by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey (“Chaise Longue” and “Angelica” were produced by Jon McMullen and Josh Mobaraki respectively). The album was mostly recorded in London, in April 2021, meaning they had a finished album before the world had even heard debut single “Chaise Longue” or played live. Right from the start of Wet Leg, Teasdale and Chambers focus was fun, and a dry sense of humour ripples through the album. "I wanted to write fun songs, I didn't want to indulge sad feelings too much, I wanted to write stuff that's fun to listen to and fun to play,” reveals Rhian. “But then, the sad seeps through, as well." TRACKLISTING 1. Being In Love 2. Chaise Longue 3. Angelica 4. I Don't Wanna Go Out 5. Wet Dream 6. Convincing 7. Loving You 8. Ur Mum 9. Oh No 10. Piece Of Shit 11. Supermarket 12. Too Late Now

Wet Leg is sad music for party people, and party music for sad people. It is cathartic and joyful and punk and scuzzy and above all, it's fun. "Wet Leg was originally just supposed to be funny," says Rhian. "As a woman, there's so much put on you, in that your only value is how pretty or cool you look. But we want to be goofy and a little bit rude. We want to write songs that people can dance to. And we want to people to have a good time, even if that might not possible all of the time."

EARLY PRAISE FOR WET LEG #2 on the BBC Sound of 2022 poll "Sometimes a great band drops two debut bombshells right on top of each other… It’s obvious Wet Leg can do anything, except make records fast enough. Bring on the album." ROLLING STONE (TOP 25 SONGS OF 2021)

OVERVIEW Daniel Rossen knew there was a lot to learn if he was finally going to finish his debut solo album. For nearly two decades, Rossen had been a crucial component of Grizzly Bear, the era-epitomizing act whose shared harmonies and interlaced textures meant he was responsible for only part of a whole.

FILE UNDER • D / ALTERNATIVE

But Rossen left the close-knit nest of Brooklyn many years ago, first for an isolated patch of land in upstate New York and then for the high desert climes of Santa Fe. The whole, as it were, was now his. So Rossen bought an upright bass (one of his instruments as a kid) and played all the parts himself, along with the cello. Best known as a guitarist, he took up woodwinds, too, buying several cheap student models and learning just enough to understand the rudiments. And then, largely at home in Santa Fe, he slowly built the world that is You Belong There, a riveting 10song reintroduction to a voice that sounds both entirely familiar and fully reenergized by the act of unfettered expression.

The Sun Ra Arkestra Meets Salah Ragab In Egypt Strut present the final instalment in their series of reissues of Sun Ra’s historic recordings in Egypt with The Sun Ra Arkestra meets Salah Ragab in Egypt plus the Cairo Jazz Band, originally released on Greek label Praxis in 1983. Salah Ragab first encountered the Arkestra at a concert at the house of Goethe Institut ex-pat Hartmut Geerken during the Arkestra’s first visit to Cairo and Heliopolis in December 1971 and, although Ra and Ragab did not meet in person on that occasion, they did meet and bond together when Ra returned to Egypt in 1983, resulting in these recordings. The Arkestra had been touring Europe in March 1983 and made their way to Cairo, playing a number of concerts during April at the Il Capo / Il Buco venue before recording the two superb studio versions of Ragab compositions, ‘Egypt Strut’ and ‘Dawn’, at El Nahar Studios in Heliopolis in May, featuring Salah Ragab on congas. Kostas Yiannoulopoulos, organiser of the Praxis festival in Greece, released the recordings as the A-side of this album, with three tracks by Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Orchestra on Side B. ‘Ramadan’ and ‘Oriental Mood’ were first heard on the Cairo Jazz Orchestra album Egypt Strut released in 1973 while ‘A Farewell Theme’, received its very first release on this record, written following the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1970; the piece was played at the much-loved President’s funeral. This first ever official reissue of the album features previously unseen photos and memorabilia alongside brand new liner notes by Hartmut Geerken and Paul Griffiths. The album is released in its original artwork and is fully remastered by Technology Works.

Aloha Got Soul

Soul, AOR & Disco in Hawai'i 1979-1985 Limited yellow vinyl pressing of a seminal compilation. ‘Aloha Got Soul’ encompasses a vibrant era of contemporary music made in Hawai’i during the 1970s to the mid-1980s as jazz, rock, funk, disco and R&B co-existed alongside Hawaiian folk music. Hawai’i’s identity had undergone huge change: statehood into America in ‘59 and the Vietnam War were the backdrop as Hawai’i’s youth found inspiration in a new wave of international music led initially by The Beatles and Stones and, later, by US R&B bands like Earth Wind & Fire and Tower Of Power. Garage bands flourished during the ‘60s and, by the ‘70s, live music was at its peak. Waikīkī was filled with clubs: The Point After, Infinity’s, Hawaiian Hut, Spats and more. For the ‘70s generation of artists, some came through the talent contest ‘Home Grown’ and its accompanying compilation LP. In 1978, Hawaiian was made the official state language and a huge movement arose to revive hula and traditional music. Steve & Teresa’s ‘Kaho’olawe Song’ longs for an island long gone: the US military had used Kaho’olawe as a bombing range since Pearl Harbor. Nohelani Cypriano sang about the once sleepy town of Kailua, now a popular tourist destination: “Kailua needs no highrise with her blue skies, not for our eyes. Can you realize?” Leading Hawaiian artists like Aura, Mike Lundy and keyboardist Kirk Thompson’s Lemuria took time in high quality facilities like Broad Recording Studio to make albums. Others grabbed studio time when they could: Tender Leaf’s Murray Compoc worked for the city bus by day and recorded an album during night sessions. Other albums were spontaneous. In 1983, Steve Maii & Teresa Bright recorded an acoustic set in just 3 hours after being invited to a studio following a gig. For the artists of the ‘70s, the climate for music changed rapidly during the mid-‘80s as DJ culture grew and live venues shut down. Hawai’i’s R&B era shone brightly and relatively briefly but, despite brilliant musicians, regular gigs and LP releases, most of the music barely made it to the mainland. Thanks largely to Aloha Got Soul’s Roger Bong, a new interest in this fertile era of Hawaiian music has grown, culminating in this compilation of overlooked gems. ‘Aloha Got Soul’ is compiled and annotated by Bong and features rare photos and original artwork.

LP-KRS-710LE

The cover of House with No Home, the second full-length album from Horse Feathers, a dusty west coast folk duo comprised of Justin Ringle and Peter Broderick, depicts a wintry farm dusted with snow. It's an image that's easily conjured throughout each of the 11 songs that make up Home, a subtle, nuanced, and quietly noble collection of Americana-kissed alternative folk that echoes the work of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, James Yorkston, Iron & Wine, and Bon Iver. Ringle, who blends Richard Buckner's soft, serpentine delivery with Andrew Bird's "I can't open my mouth all the way" mumble populates his songs with the kind of woodsy, heart and soul-broken characters that one would expect to find lurking between the pines on a frosty Oregon morning in February, but it's Broderick who provides the chill. His string arrangements are grandiose in their simplicity and busy without ever interfering with Ringle's poignant, icy prose. From the heady opener "Curs in the Weeds" to the surging, banjo-led "Working Poor," the two carve up each track like master craftsman, finding the perfect middle ground between the sparse, reverb-laden landscapes of the Great Lake Swimmers and the orchestral, aching beauty of Hem. This deluxe reissue includes a bonus 7” with a 2021 reworking of “Curs In The Weeds” with a full band as well as 2 songs from a radio session recorded during the European tour for the original album release.

PENDANT HARP

APRIL 8TH, 2022 • PENDANT’s Saddle Creek debut. • Indie Exclusive LP pressing of 300 on red and white a-side/b-side vinyl. • LP includes digital download.

Los Angeles-via-Oakland musician Chris Adams who makes music under the moniker PENDANT releases his Saddle Creek debut Harp, on April 8th. A lush, surprising new body of work from the producer and songwriter, Harp connects 90s house and rave music with hip-hop, shoegaze, and pop, and which serves as a culmination of years of painful emotional work for Adams brought on by the death of his Father over 10 years prior. Though Harp is Adam’s sophomore album as PENDANT, it feels like a starting point. The release of his 2019 debut Through a Coil was marred by the messy, public dissolution of the record label it was released on the day it was to be released. A year later he was burnt out. Attempting to tour the album had been hard on his voice, and the structures of rock music, which had dictated his entire life as a musician, were beginning to feel claustrophobic. PENDANT’s salvation came, ironically, in the form of the pandemic. Adams was ready to make new music but was both mentally and physically marooned, unable to reach the tools he would ordinarily use to make music or the headspace he would ordinarily inhabit. Without a guitar, the crutch that had supported much of his music-making in the past, he was forced to sketch out Harp’s world in a more impressionistic, free-associative way. Long a fan of dance and electronic music, he was suddenly without any good reason to not venture into that beat-heavy, synth-drenched world. The resulting Harp recalls the precise but emotionally rich landscapes of Arca or Oneohtrix Point Never, rendered in the watercolors of My Bloody Valentine.

CARPARK / APRIL 8, 2022

DEER SCOUT WOODPECKER

Deer Scout’s debut full length Woodpecker is a record about memory and the subconscious. And like an unforgettable dream that keeps you puzzling over its riddles for days, it’s as packed with direct symbols as it is with ruminative haze. “I approach songwriting as a process of boxing things up, or putting away a time capsule,” explains front person Dena Miller, who wrote the album over a period of six years. It’s a culminating collection of the project’s many sounds and influences to date, from Philly’s punk cooperatives to Oberlin’s conservatory experimentalism to New York’s DIY history. At the center is Miller’s assured guitar fingerpicking and boldly clear voice, firmly grounded even as it gently probes uncertain emotional and musical terrain. Raised by two folk musicians in Yonkers, Miller began recording songs as Deer Scout her freshman year of college in Philadelphia. There, she wrote Woodpecker’s earliest song “Synesthesia” about a train ride home from a basement show: “Night in the city / Big house on the corner / Her voice has the timbre of summers ago,” recalls Miller resonantly. After Miller’s transfer to Oberlin College, Deer Scout began touring DIY venues around the country and sharing stages with favorite artists including Waxahatchee and Told Slant. The twinned intimacy and intricacy of those two influences is reflected in the carefully adventurous arrangements on Woodpecker, which features, among other contributors, bass from close collaborator Ko Takasugi-Czernowin, cello from Zuzia Weyman, drums from Madel Rafter, and guitar from Miller’s father Mark — who also wrote the song “Peace with the Damage” and originally released it with his band Spuyten Duyvil in 2011.

TRACKLISTING

Many of the songs on Woodpecker were written during periods of grief or change. “I used to sing myself to sleep as a baby and I think music still plays the same role in my life — it’s a way of self-soothing or seeking comfort,” explains Miller. “But there’s also part of it that comes from wanting to connect with people.” Recorded and mixed primarily by Heather Jones at So Big Auditory in Philly with overdubs by Miller at home, Woodpecker is an exercise in portraying the incommunicable. “Cup” — about a relational psychology test called “a walk in the woods” that turns encounters with symbols into meaning — uses watery arpeggios, wintry strings, and roving bass to create a liminal sonic space, optimistic but tense. “Cowboy,” with airy layers of acoustic guitar riffs and Miller’s charmingly double tracked voice, takes its little fish, big pond inspiration from the character Joe Buck in Midnight Cowboy. And “Afterthought,” with its unexpectedly bright resolutions, is about God, love, and the complexity of empathy; “Heaven isn’t watching us,” sings Miller candidly over pedal steel.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Though Woodpecker is a record about uncertainty and the unknown, it’s also about compassion and connection — as Miller was able to find over the course of writing and recording this next chapter for Deer Scout and first release for Carpark, which she’s excited to at last share with the world.

HORACE ANDY

MIDNIGHT ROCKER

10 brand new recordings from the legendary Jamaican singer and longtime Massive Attack collaborator, Horace Andy, produced by Adrian Sherwood. Midnight Rocker has been approached in a similar fashion to the late-career quality that Sherwood coaxed out of Lee "Scratch" Perry with the Rainford and Heavy Rain albums, assembling a crack team of players and spending many months perfecting performance, arrangements and mixing. The result is a remarkable suite of tracks that sparkle with superb musicianship, carefully crafted production and Horace’s beautiful vocals. The material includes revisiting and updating a few classic Horace Andy songs such as “Mr. Bassie”, but the bulk of the tracks are brand new compositions with contemporary messages, such as “Watch Over Them” and “Materialist”. The pair have also versioned “Safe From Harm”, a much-loved early single by the group that Andy is most associated with – Massive Attack. “On-U Sound are very proud to present a truly wonderful album with one of the all-time great singer-songwriters in the rich history of Jamaican music, Horace Andy. This is a true gold star performance, and I’m very proud of it.” Adrian Sherwood

“Avvik” translates to anomaly or deviation. And even though Taake have been recognized as an important act within the Norwegian Black Metal scene for decades, they have always stood on the outside of main currents of black metal, a scene once founded by deviants and outcasts. In this context, “Avvik” also refers to this particular collection of songs, as the album compiles tracks which never really fitted in to any of the Taake releases, and hence ended up on three split-10” with Whoredom Rife, Deathcult and Helheim, released on different labels. “Avvik” collects the Taake tracks from the three split-10” releases for a limited digipak cd release. All tracks have been remixed and remastered for a digital release, and some of the remixes have some surprising guest appearances. Exclusively for this release, Dr Mikannibal of Sigh did Taake the honour of adding her saxophone to a slightly longer version of the Sisters of Mercy cover “Heartland”. Also, live guitarist Gjermund have done a very special acoustic version of the classic track “Nattestid ser Porten vid I”, which is exclusive for this release. “Avvik” closes one chapter for Taake and opens for a new one. Wet Tuna

WARPING ALL BY YOURSELF LP-TLR-139 Street Date: April 8, 2022

Format: Vinyl LP (with download) UPC: 711574925711

The kaleidoscopic sonic agriculture of Wet Tuna has long inhabited its own universe. Over the past five years, they have established themselves as one of the most forward thinking and anarchic of the many groups rethinking and reconceptualizing the notion of the “jam band,” all the while frustrating critical attempts to slot the group’s music into any scene, sound, or easily classifiable genre fad. For Wet Tuna’s latest, Warping All By Yourself, Matt “MV” Valentine—occasionally aided by longtime collaborators Samara Lubelski, Erika “EE” Elder, Mick Flower and Doc Dunn—flies mostly solo. Continuing the ‘Tuna’s m.o. of homegrown, dubwise psychedelia that eternally pivots on the edge of chaos and funk, Warping All By Yourself is as radical and beguiling as anything in the band’s—or, for that matter, its principle architects’—discography. There remains a beautiful simplicity at the core of MV’s workbench alchemy; as with the music of Can, there is in his productions almost always a lodestar fixed within the eye of whatever maelstrom or fragmented primal abstractions surround it. On Warping All By Yourself, funk and soul are both the unifying principles and the unlikely bedrocks upon which everything else orbits and rests, resulting in a concoction of iconoclastic, free-dancing music that has as much in common with Funkadelic as it does Crazy Horse. Beginning with the sound of lapping waves on the shore of Coney Island, opener “Raw Food” sets the stage with an indica-kissed fever dream of shoegaze-y guitar and vocals over a slinky, sumptuous bass lurch; breakbeat-laced “Ain’t No Turnin’ Back” recalls the enigmatic street boogie of Royal Trux circa “Inside Game,” while “Kinda Feelin’ Good” foregrounds a slow-motion Earl “Chinna” Smith-style groove before dissolving into the kind of thick and blurry vortex from which a thousand e-damaged A.R. Kane fans have never returned. The album’s high point might be the irresistible “Sweet Chump Change,” perhaps the first Wet Tuna jam you could seamlessly sandwich into a DJ set between Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” and A Tribe Called Quest’s “Award Tour.” Over a blood-pumping bed of warm keyboards, drums, and hand percussion, MV and EE free associate on what sound like potential song titles for some Kyussworshiping stoner rock band (“Geek messiah…unicorn blood, down at the pub…spectral geezer…gravity tweeze…”), while MIDI flutes, organs, and cascading, painterly guitars peek and poke through the cosmic fug. An absolute banger. The kinetic, psychedelic, and downright fun Warping All By Yourself serves as further proof that the most visionary, truly original American art continues to be made on the margins. Don’t sleep—get Wet!

Tody Castillo has been a performing songwriter for almost two decades. The material from two previous albums, his solid eponymous 2005 release and the superb Windhorse from 2008, covered traditional songwriter’s ground – love, loss, and struggle. With a storyteller’s nuance and a designer’s eye for detail, each song revealed depths of feeling and meaning. With this year’s new album Old Rodriguez, Tody Castillo has sharpened his best weapon. Adding a decade of married fatherhood to his growing list of accomplishments, there’s undeniable weight to his vocals, new grit that before was only hinted at.

“Cry, My Heart, Cry” Songs from Testimonies in the Fortunoff Video Archive, Volume 2

By Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble and Sasha Lurje Street Date: April 8, 2022 LP-FORTUNOFF-002

“Cry, My Heart, Cry: Songs from Testimonies in the Fortunoff Video Archive, Volume 2” is the latest collection in the Fortunoff Archive’s Songs from Testimonies project. The Fortunoff Archive is a repository of more than 12,000 hours of testimony from survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust. Starting in 1979, it is the oldest, continually operating organization to document the Holocaust through video testimony. Over the past three years, the Fortunoff Archive has worked closely with D. Zisl Slepovitch, a Belarussian composer, multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist and Yiddish educator to document the songs recounted in the Archive’s collection. As the Archive’s first musician-in-residence, Zisl located songs and conducted research about their origins. He then arranged and recorded versions with his ensemble, featuring renowned singer Sashe Lurje. Sashe, a Latvian-born Yiddish singer, specializes in performing and teaching old Yiddish singing styles. The result of this cooperation is an album of songs spanning the interwar period as well as from ghettos, and the camps. Originally, these songs were sung individually and collectively, but in survivors’ testimonies they are recounted or performed by individuals. They thus remind us that the survivor singing them represents all those who did not survive to sing again, and remind us of the absence of the original audience. “Cry, My Heart, Cry,” the second volume, features 13 new songs originally shared by Holocaust survivors in interviews conducted by the Fortunoff Video Archive. These songs were sung by survivors in three languages: Yiddish, Polish and French. The widely diverse compositions presented on the album recreate a multidimensional image of people’s lives and the multiple identities they carried. “Some of the songs are humorous, some realistic, and some are pre-war songs that received new meanings as a few songs are parodies (contrafact) i.e., new lyrics to known melodies are created to express the circumstances and emotions of that time,” says Flam. The songs were performed by Zisl Slepovitch (woodwinds), Mariana Slepovitch (tsymbaly), Joshua Camp (accordion, piano), Dmitry Ishenko (bass), Craig Judelman (violin), and Sasha Lurje (vocals). Liner notes include contextual information for each song, translations and biographical information about each of the survivors who originally sang the song in their testimony. Cover art was produced by Yulia Ruditskaya. For additional information and to listen to the released records, access http://songsfromtestimonies.org

It was an assertion of freedom as well as of life and of community. The ghetto and camp songs in this CD symbolize survival – life and not death. Even when the song-text expresses despair and fear of death, the melody elevates the text to another world, another time, and brings hope. The songs and their singing in ghettos and camps tell the story of the spiritual resistance of the survivors and the victims – of a human community during an inhuman period.” Dr. Gila Flam, Director, Music Department and Sound Archives of the National Library of Israel Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies https://fortunoff.library.yale.edu/

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Artist: RXM Reality Album: sick for you Label: Hausu Mountain Cassette edition C44 - red or silver tape

Cat #: HAUSMO126 Formats: CD, Cassette CD edition mini-LP jacket

“The tracks mutate freely, shaped with the type of condence that makes for a gripping listen; the constant chaos rarely gives you a moment to catch your breath. Despite their supercial fragmentation, though, Meegan’s jittery productions feel fully formed—like mini worlds unto themselves. This is the key to [his success]: no single moment feels more important than any other. Every second contains another explosion of fractured sonics, and they all jell together due to the album’s inspired restlessness.” - Chicago Reader “...the soundtrack to the abandonment of one's physical body and rebirth as an online avatar... feels like an epic battle between gigantic malfunctioning robots that suddenly ends in a draw.” - AllMusic “As RXM Reality, Chicago producer Mike Meegan makes fusions of noise, breakcore, techno, and bass music that bob between club euphoria and outright chaos. Many of his best tracks take that shift like a hairpin turn, abruptly crashing into bright melodies and hypnotic rhythms in cathartic releases. Advent doesn’t build up to those best moments so much as it is made entirely of them. - Bandcamp

HAUSMO DOUG & HAUSMO MAX HAUSUMOUNTAIN @GMAIL.COM

Chicago-based producer Mike Meegan records music under the moniker RXM Reality. Meegan’s three previous albums on Hausu Mountain sketch out an evolving trajectory of omni-electronic rhythmic music that warps elements of grime, dubstep, mutated techno, hyperpop, and noise into unpredictable compositions overloaded with synthetic textures and fast-scrolling beat structures. The Advent LP, released on Orange Milk in 2021, elevated the arc of Meegan’s experimentation to new levels of high-denition sound design and form-obliterating narrative deconstruction that crammed a multiverse of possibility into each compact track. With the new album sick for you, Meegan pushes the RXM Reality project into brand new zones along multiple intersecting spectrums. For the rst time, he incorporates his voice into his work, employing a series of contrasting vocal styles that complement productions which shine with more nely-crafted details and narrative hairpin turns than ever before. The album feels more progressive and overwhelming than any prior output with its pointillistic beat mosaic s and melodic arrangements, taking a few steps closer to some vision of contemporary pop music soaked in adrenaline and ballistic energy. RXM Reality’s production thrives on drama, conveyed in mammoth bursts of overlapped drum elements planted over quick-cycling snippets of software synthesis and MIDI guitar. The percussive contours and chest-beating energies of sick for you can sound at times like festival-ready EDM or dubstep (even “brostep”) refracted through a funhouse mirror, maintaining a sense of swaggering condence and bombast even as shards of disembodied beats and synths melt into putty around the edges of the mix. As a vocalist, Meegan shifts through different delivery styles and effect manipulations that include barks which wouldn’t sound out of place on a post-hardcore or death metal album, moaned quasimelodies infused with auto tune glissandi, and chopped fragments reconstructed into some chattering robotic frontman. The producer approached the tracking of sick for you from the perspective of live performance, often recording long takes ecked with transitions at a turnover rate akin to a frenetic DJ set or an IDM excursion where an absolutely banging beat segment appears as simply one peak to climb and then leap off before the next volley hits. sick for you speeds through meticulously stacked tiers of varied beats and hooks without ever losing the thread of unbounded kinetic motion. The c haotic sum total of this new strain of Meegan’s music illuminates the bond of inuence between RXM Reality and other projects that orbit Hausu Mountain, including Prolaps, Kill Alters, Bonnie Baxter, Machine Girl, and Fire-Toolz — all of which share a penchant for in-the-red electronic arrangement, genre-colliding beat programming, and erce vocal performance. Rather than viewing sick for you as a product of dour selfobliteration or manic psychosis, as its more head-spinning passages might seem to suggest, Meegan envisions the album as a purging of pent-up energy that aligns with a sense of comfort and a benecial reorientation of his priorities. Often worked on in the morning, and stemming from a dedicated daily routine of experimentation and composition, the album embodies a controlled attempt to come out on the other side of darker times — an arc mirrored by Meegan’s continuing sober lifestyle. Harnessing victories within his own daily life as a wellspring of new inspiration, he showcases the potential of progressive elec tronic music as an outlet for emotional storytelling that speaks to the process of recovery, not conveyed in words as much as raw voices and structural detonations.

OVERVIEW From the dark psychedelic shadows of Bergen, Himmellegeme returns with their second album “Variola Vera”. Himmellegeme's music is influenced by atmospheric prog rock, which together combine to create an otherworldly and timeless sound. With their heavy-hitting riffs, chilling melodies and melancholic lyrics, Himmellegeme creates music that depicts past events in their own lives, as well as in the lives of others.

The overall themes of the album are the impact we humans have on planet earth, and the destruction we lay in our wake wherever we go. Not only in regards to the planet itself, but also to the people inhabiting it. It’s not a concept album per se - the lyrics are fictional with roots in reality, but based on newer and older events seen from different viewpoints. Their debut album “Myth of Earth” received rave reviews around the globe, and Prog Magazine said that “Aleksander Vormestrand has a high, clear voice full of unfulfilled yearning, akin to Thom Yorke when Radiohead still cared about melodies, matched by the soaring lead guitar of Hein Alexander Olson.” Variola Vera was recorded at one of Bergen's top studios, Broen Studios, and was produced by Anders Bjelland (Electric Eye / Hypertext) who also worked as a sonic wizard on the album. London-based artist Wordcolour returned to Houndstooth late 2021 with a playful new single ‘Bluster’ and now to follow up we are pleased to release three new editions of the track from New Yorker DJ Python, UK based DJ and producer wizard, Djrum and one half of Matmos, The Soft Pink Truth. The result, Bluster, continues some of the club experiments of his first EP "Tell Me Something", but with a beefed-up heavier sound aimed at slow, chunky techno sets. Like that first record, this track has a sense of humour constantly cutting in playful bits of vocal and drum detail. Both the title and the artwork imply an undue swagger - a sense of winging it through changeable unpredictable weather conditions: a combination that, for me, sums up the feel of this track as well as the circumstances in which it was made." Named as ‘One To Watch’ by The Guardian, Wordcolour has received support from Crack Magazine, The Guardian, DJ Mag, KEXP, Worldwide FM, FACT Magazine, and more. TLV145LPX 5055869548588

TLV145LP

(green vinyl)

5055869548571

David West's fourth record. David is an underground pop musician from Australia and has been in numerous interesting acts over the decades – including Rat Columns, Rank/Xerox, Total Control, Lace Curtain, Liberation, Burning Sensation and Scythe. His solo works allow him free reign to follow various classic and sideways pop rainbows to their illogical conclusions.. Jolly In The Bush is a homage to shaggy indie dorks, sub-tropical singer-songwriters, robotic melancholia and the pre-Cold War 'grown and sexy' aisle at the Marina Safeway. The first side of the record sees DW straddle the indie rock horse, indulging in lyrical detours into historical fiction (‘1816’), naughty words (‘The Poet Of My Dreams’) and mumbling (‘Sleeping Head’). 'Sleeping Head' features a startlingly egotistical self-sampling of David and compatriot Bob Jones' atmospheric electronics project, Scythe, and their tune of the same name. Idea glut, or deficit? DW and his team challenge the seemingly pervasive professional competence rife in today's indie rock world. 'Keep indie rock shambolic' seems to be a theme close to his heart. However, a disturbingly serious side emerges in the middle of the record with two minimal, acoustically-minded numbers, 'Not That Lonely Yet' and 'Letters From Home'; light in feel, depressing in subject matter. A pleasing but perhaps formulaic shift in atmosphere guides us into Side B. Keyboards are deployed, synthesizers twinkle, beats hit us at a steady, head-nodding pace. 'Prove Your Love' sentimentally shimmies in the light bouncing off the marina's placid waters, 'You Must Be My Friend' is a downtempo electronic paean to illusions lost. 'You Saved My Life' sees our weary traveler finding fleeting succor in jazzy changes and a stranger's touch. Lest it all get too much, 'So We Ran Away' dusts off the glam boots worn on the Cherry On Willow LP but takes them down to a sub-basement chintz floor for a prancing romp through romantic insanity. 1.Poet of My Dreams (03:59) 2. 6AM Style (03:45) 3. 1816 (03:29) 4.
