This Issue: Joe Steinhardt at Don Giovanni

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?

Most of the artists I work with are playing in one of the music scenes or communities we work with. I’ve always approached running the label much more like a documentarian rather than a curator so it’s always been less about my personal taste as much as it is about what’s going on.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I’ve always been much more interested as a listener and a label owner in what is being expressed rather than how it is being expressed.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

I don’t have any tattoos but I imagine this would be like asking someone to pick their favorite.

What is your stance on color vinyl?

How did you personally get started in the music industry?

I’m still trying to figure out if I’m actually in the music industry or not, but about five or six years after the label began I started to have a goal of getting our releases distributed and known nationally.

When and where did the label begin?

New Brunswick, NJ even though I was living in Boston at the time, in 2003 or 2004 depending on how accurate you want to be.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

It comes from the movie Dirty Work but doesn’t really have any meaning behind it other than liking the way it sounded. If I knew I would still be doing the label all these years later I probably would have tried to think of something even dumber.

How has the label changed since it started?

The goals of providing a viable alternative to a corporately controlled music industry that can level the playing field and allow artists to be relevant nationally on their own terms, and putting artists and art first really hasn’t changed much since starting the label.

Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I’m still handling almost everything myself the same way I did when I started but I’ve been really fortunate to be able to pay friends to help with things from time to time. Right now Mike Campbell handles press for us, and Jon Herroon fulfills our mail-order, he also runs his own label called Fire Hazard Records which I encourage you to check out.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?

All of it.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

I’ve always been very community focused and so when the label started for our first ten years or so we only worked with bands in New Brunswick, NJ and the surrounding area. The internet and especially web 2.0 forced me to re-think what the community we were serving was a bit and so now it’s a little less region focused and the label has grown to serve a couple of different communities.

I abhor it and think it’s for children. Small children. I get that grown ups are into it but grown ups will also buy legos and go to disneyland without children.

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??

I’ve never really understood the cassette thing but CDs are the main format I listen to so we’ve always tried to make them for the same reason we made vinyl when no one understood why.

How would you describe the average fan of the label? I wouldn’t

In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?

It is so important it should be mandated and regulated and it’s depressing that it’s not, at least within the independent community. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

When I started Major Labels would illegally collude with Best Buy and WalMart to drive independent labels and local retail out of business. Today, large tech companies collude with each other and Major Labels to drive independent labels and local retail out of business.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Princeton Record Exchange (Princeton, NJ), Angry Mom Records (Ithaca, NY), Record Lounge (Lansing, MI), and Double Decker (Allentown, PA) are some of my personal favorites.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?

Never been super concerned about that kind of thing and more concerned with relevance while the label is active so I appreciate you giving me the chance to talk about it!

The title of the sixth album from Californian singer-songwriter Nick Waterhouse is more than just the name of one of its tracks. The Fooler is both a clue and a red herring. The Fooler is the observed and the observer, narrator and subject, truth and lie. The Fooler is the shadow and reflection of a city the artist knows sufficiently well to wander with his eyes closed, and a place which very possibly never even existed. The Fooler is not so much an unreliable narrator as a constantly shifting perspective.

The Fooler is the new album by Nick Waterhouse, and it’s a lot. Recorded by Mark Neill (Black Keys; Los Straightjackets; Dave Cobb) in Valdosta, Georgia, it’s a song-cycle of sorts, the arc of the album telling a tale of a city and its denizens. “Many of the stories come from a feeling of plasticity,” says Waterhouse. “What is memory? What is time? What is love between two human beings like in this imaginary city? A phase shift occurred writing this record. I had a breakthrough in how to tell stories in songs, like an epiphany. I started realising how I could bend time in a lot of the things that weave through the record. I have a perspective as a narrator now, instead of being the occupant of the songs.”

Waterhouse released his debut album, Time’s All Gone, in 2012. His last record, Promenade Blue, came out in 2021. In his music you will hear echoes of things you might think you know, or believe you remember, filtered through the lens of a unique artistic perspective. You will hear rhythm and blues, garage rock, radio soul and wee-small-hours balladry – but reconfigured, made new. In Waterhouse’s music, the time is both now and then. The past is the present is the future. The sound is classic yet unclassifiable.

The Fooler was produced by Neill in his Soil of the South studio in Valdosta, Georgia. A former room in a ballet school, Soil of the South is in the great tradition of American studios such as Chess and Sun. “Not the place that looks like a spaceship, more like the place that

looks like a dentist office in 1965,” says Waterhouse. They tracked the album fast near the end of 2021. A further handful of days for overdubs and mixing early in 2022 and it was finished. “Making this record was like going to see the kung fu master on the mountain,” says Waterhouse. “You can probably draw a through line from my first record to this one, but this is something else entirely. The sonic landscape Mark designed is so much further into space, with reverb and depth.”

The result is a record that offers up new riches and fresh perspectives with every spin. From the hidden corners of ‘Hide & Seek’ and the roadhouse soul of ‘Play To Win’ to the primitive, attitudinal, chugging two-chord thrill of ‘Late In The Garden’, it builds inexorably to the drama of the title track and pulsing roll-and-rock of the final pay off, ‘Unreal, Immaterial’. Play it once and it sounds immediately like a collection of great songs. Play it again – and you will – and it feels like a novel or film slowly unveiling its secrets, kaleidoscopic in its narrative complexity. “Especially during this record, I started just becoming what Allen Ginsberg called a pure breath,” says the artist. “I was becoming pure breath with my ideas.”

"His style is all his own" - NPR

"Brisk, self-contained, a little mysterious, and catchy enough to revisit again and again" - Paste Magazine

"Waterhouse remains as spirited as he is studious, crooning and belting at all the appropriate moments with a little bit of swagger."All Music

"The second coming of soul, infusing a distinctly California surf-rock spin to the genre" - Vogue

e GRAMMY® Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers have always traveled long distances in their grand adventures outward (songs inspired by their camping trips on the Mississippi River, Appalachian Trail, and Continental Divide). But for their next musical adventure, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing have wandered deep inside the forest of imagination. Brambletown (release date: March 31, 2023) is a woodland creature mosaic where "critters can talk, trees can walk and nothing’s as it seems."

You’ll be guided by Junkyard Raccoon, Doctor Mole, Fox and Hare, Possum, and Old Badger. ey’ll take you on a journey full of mysterious dreams, rowdy celebrations, tempting distractions, and ancient wisdom. e Brothers' gorgeous melodies and unfussy lyrics ease listeners through these woods on a path that is both ancient and reborn. e songs bring up meaningful family conversations around topics like environmental concerns, interconnection, plant and animal wisdom, and how taking care of ourselves and our relationships is part of taking care of the world. In the end, Brambletown is a story of learning, or better yet, remembering how deeply all of us are connected. So, into the forest we go!

ALAN BRAXE, FRED FALKE & FRIENDS THE UPPER CUTS (2023 EDITION)

OVERVIEW

“Simplicity, sincerity … et voilà!”

If you want to understand how French producer Alan Braxe ended up making some of the most important house music records of the late 1990s and early 2000s, you need to understand his modus operandi.

Everything has to be simple; and everything has to be sincere. You hear this time and again in Braxe’s music, from the golden emotional minimalism of Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You”, a worldwide hit he produced with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and singer Benjamin Diamond, to the perfectly uncluttered house music strut of “Intro”, his underground anthem with Fred Falke.

The Upper Cuts, originally released in 2005, is a compilation that rounded up several of Braxe’s greatest hits. This newly reissued version of that album adds seven bonus tracks, including the classic Braxe / Falke production “Chrystal City,” which originally appeared on the “Rubicon” single; Braxe’s iconic remix of Britney Spears’ “Anticipating,” “You’ll Stay In My Heart,” a tear-jerking Braxe / Falke work that was never properly released; and two completely new tracks that show Braxe at his best.

“My music is simple,” Braxe (né Alain Quême) explains. “The drums are very simple; the production is simple and the construction is basic. And if you respect that, then your music can be timeless.”

BEATNIK BRILLIANCE? BEAT-SPLOITATION? BEATS ME!

Before Sesame Street or Yo Gabba Gabba made art for kids that their parents understood on a whole other level, there were Hip Fables. Pop prose originally put to pulp by the pen of Steve Allen circa the ‘50s, which inspired a popular album and even a book titled Hip Fables (Simon & Schuster). The original recording featured Steve Allen on the piano accompanied by King Cool himself, Chicago DJ and Impulse! recording artist Al Jazzbeaux Collins!

In 1983, under the watchful eye of original producer Bob Thiele, Jazzbeaux and Allen were brought together once again. This time joined by ace percussionist Ray Mantilla (here referred to as “Watermelon Face” due to a swollen jaw), and one of the original hipsters, Slim Gaillard, to create an updated bilingual take on the cult favorite. In addition to the latin percussion Mantilla brought to the party, Gaillard shadowed Jazzbeaux to translate the madness into what they ultimately called Spanglish!

The results are four fab fables lling out the sides of an LP that’s suitable for jazz heads, beatniks, or children with strange taste.

60’s Minny-beat nuggs of bouncy bliss. Along with their Twin City topping cover of “Sugar & Spice” their Kay Bank studio master tapes featured stellar takes on Beau Brummels, Hollies, Pickett, & Yardbirds tunes, yet the best cuts are the swarm of Grasshoppers originals!

In the mid-to-late ‘60s, The Grasshoppers were kings of the Twin Cities music scene. They had it all — sweat-stained rock ‘n’ roll bona des, radio-ready pop songcraft, and harmonies tighter than a monk’s entertainment budget. They took their act all over the Midwest, from Iowa to Wisconsin to North Dakota, sometimes generating a Beatlemania-like female frenzy along the way.

But for all their regional renown, The Grasshoppers only released one single during their ve-year run, and not a note of their original material. More than ve decades after their breakup, Let It Be That Way rights that wrong, containing not only their lone 45 but 14 unheard tracks, including those original tunes.

A track about an African king recorded in the back of a car wash commands $1,600.

At the makeshift Man-Ray Studios in Akron, Ohio, where barrels of soap were rolled away to make room for recording, guitarist Wilbur Niles and his then-girlfriend, Machelle McNeal, recorded "Ja Ja " Niles, a history major, titled it after King Jaja, who rose from slavery to become a wildly successful broker of palm oil in the 19th century

T The humid tranquil track would lead off the pair's first and only album together, 1979's Thrust It begins with an elliptical little electric-piano hook by McNeal, an accomplished musician without much jazz experience, accompanied by wind sounds The effect is of sparkles of sunlight through an otherwise dense sheet of fog

T Thrust exists in that blurry, liminal space between jazz, funk, soul, and R&B; ‘70s-era CTI comes to mind, but the unpolished vibe sloughs off that comparison, too. Even when “Summer Fun” goes for a four-on-the-floor feeling, the mid-fidelity production renders it diaphanous The more strident “Punk Funk” is a nod to Devo, whose road crew ran Man-Ray (“They’re punk; I’m the funk!” Niles explained with a laugh, on the Sounds Visual Radio podcast )

Y You’ll swear you ’ ve heard Thrust sampled somewhere in the hip-hop sphere; pull up “Ja Ja” on YouTube, and you’ll see a comment to that end: “Pete Rock sent me here ” (Google comes up short on that one, but WhoSampled cites the following track, “Summer Fun,” as appearing in Canadian house/electronica producer Daphni’s “Hey Drum” and British techno/house DJ and producer Trus’me’s “At the Disco.”

All in all, its place in the hip-hop and DJ worlds remains to be fully understood. But due to its charm and scarcity, Thrust remains undoubtedly popular among crate-diggers hence the hefty price of an original copy

The album’s ramshackle quality places it less in Kool and the Gang territory than something ripe for reappraisal by the Williamsburg set fitting nicely between one ’ s Arthur Russell, Ata Kak, and Little Beaver LPs And this carries through the rest of Thrust "Hypertension," "Untitled," "Quiet Isle," and "One Slave, One Gun "

JARED MATTSON PEANUT

Like many debut solo albums from musicians in bands, Jared Mattson’s Peanut didn’t originally come from a need to break away. As a composer for the Mattson 2, Jared Mattson was working up a batch of new songs through the winter of 2019-2020, looking ahead to the next album he and brother Jonathan Mattson, the blitzkrieging drummer, would record. As the pandemic hit stateside, Jared holed up in his home studio and kept developing the new music. And during that process it became increasingly clear to them that this wasn’t shaping up to be the next Mattson 2 album. This was a Mattson 1 album.

Jared had been absorbing the guitar work on records by reggae stalwarts Aswad and Burning Spear, and also the Police’s Andy Summer and the ways he gives songs space. And Jared wanted a prominent bass sound, too, where the guitar itself sometimes settles into the passenger seat so that the bass can drive. Lyrically, the album taps into our rattled world, where anxiety, loss, violence, and regret are sometimes pierced by the promise of love. The time spent working on the album was a profoundly introspective time as he reflected on past relationships while living through and writing during the pandemic, he also never lost sight of this truth about himself: Life is great with music.

One of the album’s standout highlights is “Burn Down Babylon,” which is propelled by the bass’s funk-you-say groove. You don’t often encounter many pop songs with so blunt an opening line as, “I got punched in the face last night by a neo-Nazi,” -- a true experience that was delivered many years ago in a bar brawl in Carlsbad, California. But to hear the music that goes along with this tale manages a vibe that is less melee and more backyard jubilee.

When “Please Come Here,” with an intro that slinks along like a Cadillac on a Sunday morning drive, kicks in, it’s typical of the album’s melodic pop flourishes, but the twist here is that the vocals are in Japanese (The Mattson 2 have toured Japan 20 times and covered many Japanese pop songs on 2018’s Vaults of Eternity: Japan). Ween’s “She Wanted to Leave” is the lone cover, but the way Jared reimagines the song makes it fit seamlessly within the album’s sonic template. The song’s inclusion was also a personal way to honor one of Jared’s best friends, who died from cancer two years ago. The two had always bonded over the song and marveled at its inherent beauty. Ultimately, Mattson’s solo debut unfolds like a string of fascinating clouds: These are not songs in a hurry; they shift around as they float by, and, most notably, they carry their unique kind of electric charge.

THE BETHS AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, 2020

The anticipation is there in Elizabeth Stokes’ solo guitar riff under the opening lines of “I’m Not Getting Excited”: a frenetic, driving force daring a packed Auckland Town Hall to do exactly the opposite of what the track title suggests.

As the opener of The Beths’ Auckland, New Zealand, 2020 expands to include the full band, the crowd screeches and bellows. It’s a collective exhalation, in one of the few countries where live music is still possible.

The album title, and film of the same name, deliberately include the date and location, lead guitarist Jonathan Pearce says. “That’s the sensational part of what we actually did.” In a midpandemic world, playing to a heaving, enraptured home crowd feels miraculous.

In March 2020, everything seemed on track for another huge year for The Beths. Home after an 18-month northern hemisphere tour, they had just finished recording sophomore album Jump Rope Gazers and were primed for more extensive touring. But within days, New Zealand’s lockdown split the band between three separate houses. All touring was cancelled.

“It was existentially bad,” Stokes says. As well as worrying about economic survival, they lost something crucial to the band’s identity: live performance. “It’s a huge part of how we see ourselves... What does it mean, if we can’t play live?”

The band found an outlet through live-streaming, returning to the do-it-yourself mentality of their early days to connect with a global audience. The album and film have their genesis in that urge to share the now-rare experience of a live show, as widely as possible.

The fuzzy-round-the-edges live-streams pointed the way aesthetically. Native birds, wonkily crafted by the band from tissue paper and wire, festoon the venue’s cavernous ceiling while house plants soften and disguise the imposing pipes of an organ. The presence of the film crew isn’t disguised: much of the camerawork is handheld; full of fast zooms and pans.

With much of the material still fresh, the band was less focused on re-invention than playing “a good, fast rock show”, Pearce says. The tempo is up on crowd favourites “Whatever” and “Future Me Hates Me” (released as a live single on its third anniversary) as both band and audience feed off the mutual energy in the room.

Certain songs have taken on special resonance post-Covid. Pearce has found “Out Of Sight”, a tender rumination on long-distance relationships, hits particularly hard with live audiences.

Album closer “River Run” visibly brings Stokes to tears as a mix of achievement and relief kicks in. “You can finally relax at that point … You play the last note, breathe out a sigh and look up - and you’re in a giant room full of people happy and smiling.”

When singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Randall Bramblett began compiling the songs that would eventually make up his 12th and newest studio album, Pine Needle Fire, it wasn’t with any particular musical or lyrical direction in mind. But viewed through the lens of the dozen tracks on the now completed set, it’s apparent there was a theme there all along. A lot of time has passed.

Throughout Pine Needle Fire, Bramblett provides a clear-eyed and engagingly detailed study of lives conservative and crooked, loves resilient and vanished and moments that have passed and are also yet to come. He expresses these stories in a voice that is gruff and resolute, but also sympathetic and flecked with just the right amount of southern charm and whimsy.

With Pine Needle Fire, Bramblett continues to channel his singular voice and unique storytelling approach and experiences into something insightful, tuneful and incredibly soulful. This title is now available on standard black vinyl for the first time.

Elliott Fullam is a New Jersey artist who conjures the magic of when loneliness meets hope with his ghostly vocal melodies and gentle guitar tracks that bring a tranquil feeling to the listener. All of Elliott’s songs are recorded in his bedroom at home and mastered by the world-renowned Alan Douches of West West Side Music. His teenage goal was to release his first album by the time he turned 18 and he achieved that goal with the release of his debut album “What’s Wrong” on his 18th birthday of September 2, 2022.

Elliott is also an actor, playing the co-starring role as Jonathan in the film Terrifier 2 which made a big smash at the box office as an uncut and unrated horror film. And as a dedicated music fan, Elliott has interviewed many musicians since the age of 9 including James Hetfield of Metallica, J Mascis, Ice-T, Jay Weinberg of Slipknot and many more. He always held his passion for music in high regard while finding inspiration in his favorites Elliott Smith, Duster, Mazzy Star, Broadcast, Radiohead and Nick Drake. With nothing else in his life plans aside from the pursuit of creating the best music he possibly could while sustaining his promising acting career, Elliott will continue to release music and play shows for as long as he exists on this planet in hopes that he may be a small part of the force for good in this trying world.

JULIEN DYNE, SURPRISE CHEF’S STUCKEY AND MORE SHINE IN JAZZ-FUNK EP

OVERVIEW:

Drawing inspiration from the depths of late 70’s NYC proto-rap disco instrumentals, Nigerian boogie, Jamaican dub and modern jazzy house - The Lahaar is a Trans-Tasman collaboration between Julien Dyne, Horatio Luna and Surprise Chef’s Lachlan Stuckey, featuring Mara TK and Toby Laing on vocals.

The EP embarks on a 5-track rollercoaster - kicking off with “Doin’ It”, fast-paced jazz-funk peppered with marimba and organ riffs, balanced out by the siren vocals of Mara TK.

“Step 2” suddenly brakes and swerves into cruise mode, repurposing the trumpets and dub echoes - picking up tempo in the soulful melancholia of “Work Work Work”. In the last two tracks the organs and guitars make a frenetic comeback by way of disco-house, ending with a nod to 70s cop movie funk.

An Insult to

the

Sport is a split offering from the genre-de ant groups They are Gutting a Body of Water and A Country Western Elements of breakcore, shoegaze, and obtuse slacker rock nd home on An Insult, at times with no bridge at all between the disparate styles In TAGABOW’s “The Brazil”, a stop-on-a-dime is the only thing that separates hazy slowcore and adventurous drum n bass, unambiguous evidence of the band’s penchant for iconoclast composition. A Country Western’s side of the split entertains similar stylistic mashups, opening with the atmospheric jungle of “Lung” before lurching into the alt-rock “Keeping up with the Joneses”, whose fuzzedout lead riff calls back to bygone eras On paper, the combination of styles may read as cacophonous or incompatible, but the end result is instead a measured contrast of sounds, a re ection of the inescapable in uence of our chaotic time and the groups’ environments.

Having been a founding member of one of the most revered power pop bands of all time tends to be a footnote that follows you around Yet Jody Stephens’ contribution to the pop canon goes well beyond his beginnings in Big Star, helping to refine alt-country with Golden Smog and shaping the Ardent Records legacy well into the current era Following the outpouring of love around the documentary, Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me, Jody reached out to his longtime friend, producer and songwriter Luther Russell to join him for some promotional appearances A comfortability on stage became a kinship in the studio and eventually led to two albums as Those Pretty Wrongs The comfort between the duo is key to what makes Those Pretty Wrongs work Luther and Jody bounce ideas off of one another with the kind of natural symbiosis that all bands shoot to achieve

Heading into their third album, the band found themselves a new haven in the rising California outpost of Cosmic Americana, Roots, and Power Pop: Curation Records Following the reissue of their two previous albums by the label in May, Holiday Camp finds Those Pretty Wrongs crafting a record that’s autumnal, searching for solace, and yet unsettled The title is a nod to both wistful summers at bygone British institutions, the favored gig fodder for their ‘60s heroes, and the more sinister implications of Tommy’s Holiday Camp communal, but with a cost There’s a promise of hope in that turn of phrase, but there’s a slightly dark undercurrent peeking out behind the wallpaper Those cracks break through most prominently on the simmering frustrations of “Scream,” and the disheartened pleas of “Paper Cup ”

Holiday Camp finds more than a few friends turning up to lace songs with their contributions Recorded from their own home studios, string arrangements from Chris Stamey, moog from Wilco’s Patrick Sansone, and glockenspiel from Mitch Easter all bolster the record’s mercurial grace The physical distance does little to dampen the sense of communal ease that holds tight at the album’s core

With shades of home-grown Memphis power pop, nods to Apple Records alums, and an appeal that trickles down to fans of open-hearted pop from Emmit Rhodes to The Elephant 6, Those Pretty Wrongs draw the listener into an environment that’s familiar and fragrant Luther’s arrangements have a timeless temperance that wraps around the listener Jody’s songwriting is as honest as ever It’s a hand reaching out in the darkness, and a shoulder cry on From the sunset serentity of “New September Song,” to the pastoral chamber folk of “Brother, My Brother,” the songs blanket the listener in a bittersweet bliss Jody and Luther’s harmonies have taken on a sublime alchemy Like lost brothers found once more, they weave wonder into the pensive meditations on “This Painted Sky,” and the hopeful send-off of “The Way,” With their full catalog in the steady hands of Curation, the band members find themselves poised to re-examine their past while excited to enter a new era with their most affecting album on the way

ARTIST: Dan Tepfer TITLE: Inventions / Reinventions

ITEM #: SSS-49 GENRE: Classical / Jazz

BOX COUNT: 40 PACKAGE: Digipak

EXPORT: N. America Only UPC: 634457127371

RELEASE DATE: March 31, 2023

On his new album Inventions / Reinventions, pianistcomposer Dan Tepfer performs each of Bach’s beloved 15 Two Part Inventions interleaved in chromatic sequence by 9 of his own free improvisations in the “missing” keys to create a new full, and fully transporting 24-key experience, a 55-minute mix of the timeless and the contemporary. 300 years ago in 1723, Johann Sebastian Bach initially composed his Two Part Inventions as keyboard exercises for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. While remaining essential studies for burgeoning musicians, these pieces have also long been cherished by generations of music lovers, and recorded by iconic pianists. Tepfer captured Inventions / Reinventions in nighttime recording sessions that he engineered himself in an intimate salon next door to the Paris apartment where he grew up. His improvisations explore the narrative structure Tepfer divined in Bach’s inventions, where the hero, a musical idea, starts off in the home key, goes through wild harmonic adventures through foreign keys, and finally makes it back home. What Tepfer finds fascinating is that Bach plays out this dense musical narrative in just a couple minutes. Dan’s longer, free improvisations get at what he hears as Bach’s powerful subsurface, the mechanisms at play deep below. Tepfer sees classical and jazz, which most consider to be so different, as two sides of the same coin. Playing Bach alongside his own free improvisations is a meditative journey for him, and he hopes “when people who listen to the album hear music that was composed 300 years ago juxtaposed with music that was just improvised in the 21st century, they feel the kinship between the two.”

Kåre quit right after the recording and was replaced by Mads Husvik (ex The Basement Brats, later The Nuggets) on  guitar and the band played two gigs during winter/spring in Osl o and Halden respectively. Bjørn was then replaced by  Lars Kristian Gulbrandsen ‐ Zugly (ex Abusers, later Wonderfools and The Good Bad And The Zugly) on bass. The plan  was to record a second album, but Arne left for work in Asia and the band faded slowly away.

No Export to Europe/Japan/Australia/NZ; Send Grief to All Elsewhere.

Critically-acclaimed, criminally-overachieving Glasgowbased singer and guitarist Alasdair Roberts is known as a superlative original songwriter as well as an interpreter of traditional songs from Scotland and beyond. For the past twenty years, his recordings have alternated between these two complimentary poles, with ‘pop’ records such as The Amber Gatherers and A Wonder Working Stone nestling in his expansive back catalogue alongside “folk” albums such as No Earthly Man and What News (with Amble Skuse and David McGuinness). Additionally, all of these records possess a further dimension, derived from their collation of songs together into one album-length statement. This is part of Alasdair ’s great achievement in his career for him, this thing of music and song hasn’t come the eons it’s travelled to simply entertain. These impulses fully present and well honed, Alasdair returns to his roots with Grief in the Kitchen and Mirth in the Hall, his fifth full-length collection of traditional song. Recorded live in the studio, it is an entirely solo collection of twelve traditional ballads and songs sparsely arranged for acoustic guitar, piano and voice. The majority of the songs originate in Alasdair ’s homeland of Scotland, with a couple from Ireland and one from Prince Edward Island on Canada’s eastern seaboard too.

The record takes its title from a line in the final verse of one of its songs, “The Baron o’ Brackley” a ballad of feuding clans and matrimonial betrayal from the north-east of Scotland. Grief in the Kitchen and Mirth in the Hall: it’s a title which goes some way towards encapsulating many of the record’s themes. Collectively the songs treat of various conflicts and tensions those of gender; of class, status and position; and of geography and tribal belonging and the roles and responsibilities expected at the various intersections of these constructs. That we should never forget!

As with many of Alasdair ’s recordings, Grief in the Kitchen and Mirth in the Hall contains ballads aplenty: tragic (“Bob Norris”), supernatural (“The Holland Handkerchief”) and dramatic (“Eppie Morrie”). There are love songs (“The Lichtbob’s Lassie”) and anti-love songs (“Kilbogie”). There are rare, seldom-heard pieces (“Young Airly”) and much more well-known ones (“Mary Mild,” a version of “The Queen’s Four Maries”). Woven through all of this a thread of levity, perhaps is a triptych of zoological allegories a panegyric to a mystical steed (“The Wonderful Grey Horse”), a lament for a lost cow (“Drimindown”) and a paean to a regal waterbird (“The Bonny Moorhen”), which serves to highlight the intersection of the mythic, the eternal and the mundane at which we all find ourselves in every day of our life on Earth.

Grief In the Kitchen and Mirth in the Hall was masterfully recorded by Sam Smith at Green Door Studios, Glasgow over an economical two days, and mixed in one day. Its brevity on all levels is an aspect of its expression. Alasdair ’s renowned acoustic fingerstyle guitar is understated yet questing, ever in service to the needs of the song, underpinning his soulful tenor voice. Three songs eschew his habitual acoustic guitar in favour of simple piano arrangements. The spare setting and Alasdair ’s deeply committed performance gently reminds of the meanings and melodies of these old songs, chosen instinctively and with care, for all to hear and sing in 2023, and the world beyond that is ever coming.

Ulrika Spacek – Compact Trauma

Tough Love

Nearly five years on from their last transmission, Ulrika Spacek resurface from self-imposed exile with their third album, a collection of songs that function as a chance treatise of sorts for our current collective condition.

In its first phase of life, Compact Trauma documented a band striving to perfect an idea while the universe around them seemed to want to shut down. And then, at an impasse and with a record halfway complete, it suddenly did. If they were a band in need of the breaks applying, it was the force of a global pandemic that made it happen. As the world stood still, Compact Trauma was filed away, unfinished and unheard by the wider world, possibly to remain that way forever

As the shutters came back up, they found themselves drawn back towards Compact Trauma. They rediscovered a record that seemed to preempt the shared grief of a global pandemic, addressing existential freak out, displacement, substance reliance and self-doubt.

The fear and panic is palpable. Take ‘The Sheer Drop’: a wire-taut exercise in tension-and-release rendered in three parts, a whimsical synth opening giving way to chiming guitars before a nailbiting coda sets its controls for the heart of the sun or the end of the world, whichever comes first. The title track, addressing itself or some unknown assailant, demands they “take your hands and your head off the table”, spiralling around a breathless riff fuelled by infectious anxious energy, before shifting to a lullaby-like finale, concluding with the ominous thought, “compact trauma? Or full blown disaster? I'll be back in an hour (Or so i think)”. It’s a fitting encapsulation of a highly complex record. They could have left it alone, but in coming back to what they knew, Ulrika Spacek found their best work yet.

songwriter-inventor THOMAS TRUAX joins forces with ex -Slits/Banshees drummer BUDGIE to produce a gemstone of art-rock, post-punk and surreal Americana. Thomas Truax is (pronounced troo -aks) an imaginative American singer / songwriter and inventor who has been touring and releasing records for 2 decades, usually performing solo with his own ‘band’ of self-made (sometimes mechanical) instruments. His music evades easy pigeonholing as his songs flit between art rock, post-punk, and a distinctive brand of surreal Americana. UNCUT Magazine wrote: "Truax is shaping up nicely as one of the great rock eccentrics. ”. Mother Superior is the third in a series of motorized mechanical drum machines built by Thomas. She’s made primarily from recycled parts including bicycle wheels, hubcaps, spoons, a horn, and other percussive bits. She is widely celebrated for her ability to play steadily and make quite a din. Allusions to dreams are woven throughout Dream Catching Songs, whether they be literal night dreams, aspirations, fantasies or broken dreams. It was while they were both performing at a festival event that Thomas and Budgie had a chance to get properly acquainted. Thomas: “We had a great conversation over dinner. I’d been a fan of his work since my teenage days in Denver but he didn ’t know mine. My performance was scheduled for later and he said he’d watch it. I warned him that sometimes human drummers take offense to Mother Superior, seeing that something so mechanical could, in a way, threaten to take their place. ” “But when I finished my set I went backstage and there was Budgie, waiting in the wings, very enthusiastic about my set. He was even holding a flower for Mother Superior, and said he was in love with her.” From the gentle allure of the opening title song through its final sweeping orchestrated mini-movie of a track, Dream Catching Songs is an inspired and powerful entry in Thomas ’s catalog of recorded work, and a shining example of Budgie at his dynamic best.

Overview

In the past few years, 25-year-old Sabrina Teitelbaum has transformed into a songwriter without fear. The loud-quiet excavations that comprise her hook-filled self-titled debut as Blondshell don’t only stare traumas in the eye—they tear them at the root and shake them, bringing precise detail to colossal feelings. They’re clear-eyed statements of and about digging your way toward confidence, self-possession, and relief.

Sabrina shed her previous, pop-leaning project and the process emboldened her. Subtracting self-consciousness became a catalyst for the lucid songs of Blondshell, on which her experiences all coalesce to form her truest expressions of self yet. “It was me, as a person, in my songs,” she says. When she showed a few to producer Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Girlpool, Porches), he encouraged her to write an album, joining a chorus of friends saying, “This is you.”

Powered by brilliant, crystalline melodies, Teitelbaum’s eloquent writing takes root in the concrete: every line is literal, a keyhole to a bigger truth. “I think you watched way too much HBO growing up,” goes “Joiner,” a blunt address of formative damage. Blondshell is about learning and unlearning, about untangling the ways we’re taught to accept bad behavior, about peeling the layers back. These intelligent songs often contain the epiphanies of therapy sessions more than pop sessions, even when the hooks are simply a blast.

You won’t hear Vijaya Anand sing on this record. Nor will you hear him play any of the instruments. He is the invisible presence behind each of these songs. He’s the Musical Director, here to dream up sequences and carefully produce sophisticated South Indian pop perfection.

Anand was part of the first wave to use electronic instruments in Indian film scores. Almost all sung in glorious Telugu. Thirty years after its original release, Asia Classics 1: The South Indian Film Music of Vijaya Anand - Dance Raja Dance is available on vinyl for the first time.

It’s been thirty years since we originally released this retrospective from the Okinawan icon Shoukichi Kina. There’s a lot we could say about the legendary Kina and his influence on popular Japanese music but we’ll let Ry Cooder, who’s featured on most of the songs here, take it away:

“I first met Shoukichi Kina in 1979. David Lindley and I were on tour in Japan, and were getting well worn out. Kina and a translator met up with us in Osaka and we all sat down in the lobby of this giant tourist hotel, which Kina hated. He just sat there, staring straight ahead, saying nothing for an hour.

One year later, a round-trip plane ticket to Hawaii came in the mail, with a note that read: “ALA MOANA HOTEL, COMMERCIAL RECORDING STUDIO, PLEASE. KINA.”

Kina had a habit of throwing himself down onto the floor and kicking his feet when he liked a playback. I remember thinking, this beats “one more for us, guys!” When Kina’s wife, Tomoko, put down the vocal on “Flowers For You Heart,” he lay down and stayed down, making the engineer play it back over and over until he had wrung himself out—a real playback party, Okinawan style. Right about then you know you’re ready to start recording for real, but it never works out that way. You squeeze off one or two, say adios, and go to the house. Then later, maybe four people discover your little contribution, and then someone wants to reissue the album and there you go.”

Ever since their emergence in early 2016 HMLTD, avid advocates of the Gesamtkunstwerk, have always striven to give audiences more. On their wildly ambitious second album, they are realising these aims on a truly epic scale.

Created over the course of two years with a cast of 47 musicians – including a gospel choir and a 16-piece string orchestra – The Worm is less a concept album than a fully-fledged musical universe, transcending genre and medium. Set in a disorienting anachronistic version of Medieval England – as steeped in dystopian sci-fi fantasy as it is folklore and Old English mythology – it’s part political polemic, part deeply moving psychological journey.

Though always admired for their defiantly genre-agnostic approach, The Worm sees HMLTD pushing sonic experimentation to a whole new level, from dissonant free jazz riffing to vintage soul and English folk fusions to rock opera. Major musical touchpoints included Stravinsky’s ‘Rite Of Spring’, Pink Floyd and Nina Simone’s rendition of ‘Sinnerman’ and references for the world of The Worm included 14th century texts The Canterbury Tales and The Decameron, Aleksey German’s 2013 sci-fi film Hard To Be A God, Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev and the hopeful narrative arc of 90s mecha anime series ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’.

IN. SPAAAACE: Spelljams Confirmed!

For nearly five decades, Dungeons & Dragons has inspired generations of creative people to make movies, novels and, yes, music. Now that relationship is even more distinct with the release today of an album of music created by cutting-edge bands and musical acts all inspired by Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. The far-out storytelling in the world’s greatest roleplaying game’s latest offering is fertile ground for composing some of the most original songs you’ll hear this year from bands like Magic Sword, Shabazz Palaces and OSEES

Spelljams features a double LP’s worth of tracks from artists all produced by Chris Funk, guitarist from The Decemberists who plays D&D with many folks in the music scene in Portland, OR. Chris Perkins, story architect at D&D and lead designer of Spelljammer, worked with Funk to recruit artists to bring the Flash Gordon-esque soundtrack to life.

Quote from Perkins: “You know what they like on the Rock of Bral? Rock music! The brilliant Chris Funk has assembled a motley crew of bards to create Spelljams—music inspired by our newest Spelljammer adventure, Light of Xaryxis. I encourage Dungeon Masters use Spelljams as background music during their D&D game sessions or listen to it while dreaming up future hijinks. Everyone else: enjoy the music of Wildspace!”

Quote from Funk: “Helping facilitate bringing this world to life through music and the amazing artists' visions that were selected was an honor of a lifetime. I am of the opinion when people think of Dungeons & Dragons that there a preconceived underscore of what these worlds might sound like. With this bold return to Spelljammer we were excited to push the boundaries “deep into Wildspace,” working with artists from diverse musical backgrounds that could challenge what music in the multiverse of the world’s greatest roleplaying game might sound like. Each artist was given a character or plot prompt from the storyline, then challenged to write an original composition based on Light of Xaryxis. We hope you enjoy the result!”

Shamir's art is a synthesis of the full spectrum of human emotion; sensual, furious, yearning, joyful. The freedom in his self produced and released Hope, although tethered through style to greats (like Miss Nina Simone, Prince, and Taylor Swift) is based almost entirely in a hyper specific, fully autonomous, embodied expression of personhood. Originally––and somewhat begrudgingly––released via SoundCloud in 2017, Hope was received with the sort of enthusiasm that marks this work as a truly iconic, world building project that only Shamir could have constructed. The original vinyl pressing was quick to sellout, and now, via the venerated label Kill Rock Stars and following its 5 year anniversary, Hope finds itself remastered on color vinyl, in a gatefold jacket and featuring two never-before-heard bonus tracks; marking a maturation all the way from Shamir's bedroom 4-track to platforms available worldwide.

INIMITABLE POST PUNK INSURGENTS!

The John Cale produced '79 Model Citizens EP is nally available again, and with it comes unheard live recordings from Hurrah, Max's, and CBGB! "Model Citizens, attacking their instruments with poetic yet strangely ironic frenzy, re ect the frightened, scattered, painful (yet edge-of-ecstatic) world of the moment." (NY Rocker) This short lived vanguard out t now gets its due on red vinyl, with an insert featuring liner notes from Tim Page.

Model Citizens was conceived as a collective art project not only to make rock music but to be about rock music as well.

The music was dissonant, aggressive and succinct. A song might start with a standard boogie-woogie ri only to be drowned immediately in a chaos of percussive rat-tat-tats, carnival organ, electric violin, mallet instruments, and anxious stabs to the guts of the guitars. There were no solos, no jam sessions and, while there was hard lyricism aplenty in Model Citizens songs, you had to seek it out, as you did in the city itself.

More than 40 years later, you hold its legacy in your hands. Put it on and turn it up.

- Tim Page (abridged from his liner notes)

THE BETHS EXPERT IN A DYING FIELD

On The Beths’ new album Expert In A Dying Field, Elizabeth Stokes’ songwriting positions her somewhere between being a novelist and a documentarian. The songs collected here are autobiographical, but they’re also character sketches of relationships -- platonic, familial, romantic -- and more importantly, their aftermaths. The shapes and ghosts left in absences. The question that hangs in the air: what do you do with how intimately versed you’ve become in a person, once they’re gone from your life?

The third LP from the New Zealand quartet houses 12 jewels of tight, guitar-heavy songs that worm their way into your head, an incandescent collision of power-pop and skuzz. With Expert, The Beths wanted to make an album meant to be experienced live, for both the listeners and themselves. They wanted it to be fun in spite of the prickling anxiety throughout the lyrics, the fear of change and struggle to cope.

Most of Expert was recorded at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s studio on Karangahape Road in Ta–maki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) toward the end of 2021, until they were interrupted by a four-month national lockdown. They traded notes remotely for months, songwriting from afar and fleshing out the arrangements alone. The following February The Beths left the country to tour across the US, and simultaneously finish mixing the album on the road, culminating in a chaotic three-day studio mad-dash in Los Angeles. There, Expert finally became the record they were hearing in their heads.

The album’s title track “Expert In A Dying Field” introduces the thesis for the record: “How does it feel to be an expert in a dying field? How do you know it’s over when you can’t let go?” Stokes asks. “Love is learned over time ‘til you’re an expert in a dying field.” The rest is a capsule of The Beths’ most electrifying and exciting output, a sonic spectrum: “Silence is Golden,” with its propulsive drum line and stop-start staccato of a guitar line winding up and down, is one of the band’s sharpest and most driving. “Knees Deep” was written last minute, but yields one of the best guitar lines on Expert

Stokes strings it all together through her singular songwriting lens, earnest and selfeffacing, zeroing in on the granules of doubt and how they snowball. Did I do the wrong thing? Or did you? That insecurity and thoughtfulness, translated into universality and understanding, has been the guiding light of The Beths’ output since 2016. In the face of pain, there’s no dwelling on internal anguish -- instead, through The Beths’ music, our shortcomings are met with acceptance. And Expert In A Dying Field is the most tactile that tenderness has been.

SKYLAR SPENCE FIONA COYNE/FALL HARDER

Following a collection of self-released internet mixtapes and albums as Saint Pepsi that garnered a cult internet following amongst the vaporwave community, Ryan DeRobertis signed to Carpark Records and changed the project’s name to Skylar Spence, cementing the legitimacy of his young recording career. For his Carpark Records debut in August 2014, Skylar Spence took a step away from the more genre-shuffling styles of his Internet releases to focus his skills on high-power pop. The title track of the “Fiona Coyne” 7-inch is an uplifting tribute to fantastical romance and the joyous dreams pop culture can provide. Mastermind Ryan DeRobertis lays down a funky guitar riff and bass line of Chic-quality to tease our senses before tickling us silly with the chorus’ ecstatic horns. “My love’s on the silver screen/ she’s always playing make believe,” sings the then 21-year-old songwriter, playing a bit of make-believe himself. The song, named after a certain graduate of Degrassi Community School, acts out the fantasy of dating a TV star and plays with the idea that music can be something of a catalyst for romance.

The b-side, “Fall Harder,” is a lovelorn hit about a somewhat unattainable beauty. “You’ve got me under your spell/ and baby, I couldn’t fall harder,” DeRobertis sings over an Orange Juice-worthy riff and electronic subtleties like the sound of a Galaga battle. For this 7-inch, DeRobertis wrote danceable love songs with a nostalgic aesthetic to the production “because I think nostalgia is inherently narcissistic and I’m currently very into the idea of exploring the connection between nostalgia and narcissism,” he says.

These two singles would later appear on his debut album, Prom King, which was met with widespread critical acclaim. The buzz led to international touring, transforming Skylar Spence from a home-recording project to a four-piece live band, sharing stages with Madeon, The Knocks, and several festival appearances. Long out-of-print, “Fiona Coyne/Fall Harder” is available again on Baby Blue vinyl on April 7th, 2023.

NICK & NORAH’S INFINITE PLAYLIST

ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

(15TH ANNIVERSARY 2-LP “YELLOW YUGO” VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: APRIL 7, 2023

With a title like that, and a plot that revolves around desperate attempts to attend a secret show by a mythical, legendary indie rock band (“Where’s Fluffy?”), Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist HAD to have a good soundtrack or be subject to withering putdowns from the alternative music press. Well, the movie really delivered, providing a snapshot of the (mostly) NYC independent music scene circa 2008 with tracks from such stalwarts as Vampire Weekend, Devendra Banhart, We Are Scientists, Band of Horses, and Richard Hawley (along with some surprises like Big Star’s Chris Bell). And who better to compose the score than Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who chips in with “Nick & Norah’s Theme” to wrap up the album!? Unbelievably, this concentrated dose of musical hipness has NEVER seen a reissue on vinyl, and OG copies go for triple figures…for its 15th anniversary, we’ve created a beautiful, “scrapbook” gatefold jacket with production stills to hold two records pressed in yellow to match the color of Michael Cera’s Yugo!

Mary Mundy: MOTHER NATURE

MOTHER NATURE

(LIMITED PINK VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: APRIL 7, 2023

Lord knows we have put out some rare R&B records here at Real Gone Music, but this one may take the cake! Mary Mundy’s 1980 album for the obscure Image label goes for hundreds of bucks if you can find it at all (which, as of this writing, you can’t). Loaded with bassheavy, disco-soul grooves over which Mundy’s voice floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee, Mother Nature lives up to the collector hype. That Mundy’s discography consists of this album and a few scattered singles just adds to the mystique of this intriguing one-off, which sees its first reissue in any format here. Remastered for vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision. We’re only making 1000 copies and you better not tarry…pink vinyl pressing!

Roslyn & EverythingCharles: Must Change (Black Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: APRIL 7, 2023

The duo of Charles McCloud and Roslyn Johnson made only two albums during their career…but those two albums (Everything Must Change and Spirit of the Living God) are among the most collectible records ever made in the gospel genre. In fact, they are so hard to find that we’re still searching for Spirit of the Living God to scan the artwork, but we managed to snag a copy of their 1981 debut Everything Must Change on the obscure Cheri label (though we may have to pass a collection plate to recoup the cost!). It’ll just take the first track to show you why these records are in such demand; you have never heard such a soulful (check out those harmonies!), slow-burning rendition of that hoary chestnut “Amazing Grace” in your sanctified life! And with able production by keyboardist Julius Brockington, who played with Larry Young and headed up several outfits of his own, Everything Must Change is a crossover album in the best sense of the word, blending the spiritual fervor of gospel with the danceable grooves of soul and—dare we say it?—disco. Don’t miss the Donny Hathaway cover “Someday We’ll All Be Free,” too. Black vinyl release, first ever reissue in any format…limited to 1000 copies!

Very, very few artists have reached the heights attained by Dionne Warwick and the songwriting/production team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David on their historic string of hit singles for the Scepter label. Over the course of a little over ten years, Dionne scored no less than 40 charting Pop hits and 29 charting R&B hits for Scepter, propelling Dionne to a ranking second only to Aretha Franklin among female singers with the most chart hits in the rock era, not to mention five Grammy nods. More importantly, Warwick, Bacharach, and David brought a new level of sophistication to popular music…and by doing so, created some of the most indelible recordings of all time. However, despite its brilliance and lasting influence, there has never been a collection at music retail that truly captured this incredible body of work…until now. The Complete Scepter Singles 1962-1973 offers the A and B-side of every single Dionne cut for the Scepter label (with the bonus inclusion of her single for Musicor featuring the hit “Only Love Can Break a Heart”), all original, (mostly) mono single versions remastered by Mike Milchner of Sonic Vision from original tape sources and annotated by veteran music journalist and Billboard contributor Paul Grein. Among the 74 (!) tracks on this 3-CD set are some of the most hallowed sides in ‘60s pop, including “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Walk On By,” “Message to Michael,” “(Theme from) Valley of the Dolls,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Alfie,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose,” “Trains and Boats and Planes,” “This Girl’s in Love with You,” and “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” But really, pretty much every track in this collection is a masterpiece…and remember, the single mixes you’re hearing on this collection is exactly what folks thrilled to when they turned on their radio back in the day. A cornerstone of any pop music collection…and a timely tribute coinciding with the release of the new Dionne documentary Don’t Make Me Over We are limiting this release to 3000 copies…don’t “Walk On By!”

Where Did We Go Wrong?

STREET DATE: APRIL 7, 2023

Nothing special…just your average psychedelic-hardcore punk-power pop-alt-country-shoegaze fatherdaughter project! Where Did We Go Wrong? is proof that there is a silver lining in every cloud, even a cloud as dark and pervasive as COVID. In the Summer of 2021, Real Gone Music label co-founder Gordon Anderson was hanging out in the backyard of one of the three families comprising his pandemic “pod” when the kids—who’d all known each other since preschool—started banging around on some instruments lying around the garage. Suddenly, from the unmistakable if uncertain strains of Hole’s “Malibu,” came the sounds of somebody playing drums…and playing really well! Turns out it was Anderson’s then 14 year-old daughter Edie, who, though she had taken guitar lessons for a few years, had never held a drumstick in her life. So, the Andersons bought a drum kit off Craigslist, and Edie and Gordon started jamming nightly in their West Hollywood garage.

The collaboration deepened, though, when their cousin Will Kast moved to town and opened a recording studio in his apartment. Suddenly, the idea dawned on Gordon and Edie that they could actually make a record and preserve for posterity all the new songs they were developing together. So, when Spring Break rolled around in 2022, the duo got down to work, laying down tracks for 15 songs that veer wildly but seamlessly from driving psychedelia (“A Little Insane”) to hardcore punk (“Energy Star;” “Block Party”) to power pop (“Bad for My Health”) to alt-country (“Last Gasp;” “Paying My Disrespects”) to shoegaze (“House of Mirrors”) and beyond, with a little extra octane (and faster tempos than those found on Gordon’s critically-acclaimed 2020 solo album Moon Man) provided by the teenage drummer. The lyrics, which feature some co-writes between Gordon and Edie, take on everything from environmental degradation to social media obsession…and, of course, COVID (which they both caught while recording Where Did We Go Wrong?). When it was all done, only one thing remained: deciding on a band name. NXTOFKIN seemed to sum it all up. “The Anderson Family Singers” this ain’t… this is high-wire, hard-hitting, stay-up-past-your-bedtime rock and roll.

“Georgia’s Fall Line is a geologic boundary marking the prehistoric shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean as well as the division between the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions of the state. Rivers below this line tend to be slower moving, larger, and easier to navigate than those above.

This album was influenced by the stories, people, and sonic images from either end of the Georgia Fall Line. The coast, ancient and otherwise, is where we all grew up. It’s the crossroads. It’s where geology and geography, trade and commerce, history and the keeper of science met to discuss the mechanics of the sun lift and the sunset. Our album Fall Line is intended to navigate you deeper into these stories, people, and images seen through the lenses of The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies.”

TREES SPEAK Mind Maze

7th April 2023

‘Mind Maze’ is the new album by Trees Speak on Soul Jazz Records. The first pressing only of the album comes with a bonus seven-inch single containing two tracks that are not available on vinyl anywhere else.

Mind Maze is, amazingly, Trees Speak’s fifth album to be released on Soul Jazz Records in the space of little over two years – an output matched only by the intensity of their music created during this short time.

As with all their previous releases, ‘Mind Maze’ is a mind -boggling tightrope walk across an array of musical influences that seamlessly create the unique present-day world of Trees Speak.

The band’s sound is characterized by a combination of German krautrock motoric-beat rhythms, angular New York post-punk attitude, 60s spy soundtracks, psych, rock, jazz, and 70s synthesizers and vocoders. There is also a cosmic spatial awareness to their sound; both personal inner space and galactic outer space, as well as a wilful pushing of sonic boundaries.

Trees Speak are a musical duo based in Tucson, Arizona, composed of Daniel Martin Diaz and Damian Diaz. Their music is heavily influenced by the cosmic magic of the natural desert landscapes of Arizona, creating a unique and captivating sound that is both experimental and innovative. ‘Mind Maze’ was recorded in Brooklyn, New York with special guests Gabriel Sullivan, Alex Pope, Craig Dreyer, Ben Nisbet and Stephani Guilmette.

Here you will find the myriad sounds of 1970s German electronic music (everything from Can to Cluster, Popul Vuh to Tangerine Dream); 1980s New York post-punk and synthcore (from No Wave to Suicide); John Barry’s 1960s movies, John Carpenter’s 1970s horror. You will also hear the influences of French and Italian progressive rock (Magma, Goblin) as well as cosmic, new age and experimental space soundscapes an almost endless list of diverse influences that ebb and flow like an ocean of sound, in the process creating a truly unique soundscape that Trees Speak have made wholly their own.

The name Trees Speak reflects their interest in the concept of using future technologies to store information and data in trees and plants, with the idea that trees communicate coll ectively. This interest in nature and technology, combined with their passion for experimentation, has led Trees Speak to create a truly one-ofa-kind listening experience that is both unique and engaging.

If you ever wanted to hear Can, Neu!, Destroy All Monsters, Pere Ubu, electric eels, John Cage, Liquid Liquid, Tangerine Dream, Suicide, Laurie Spiegel, Art Ensemble of Chicago, John Barry, Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company, Sun Ra, Stockhausen, John Carpenter, Electro -Acoustic and Musique Concrète and Mars in one band

then this is it! Trees Speak are a band that defies categorization and offer an eclectic listening experience, both exciting and memorable.

The two bonus tracks (‘Seraphim’ and ‘Orpheus’) included with the album give us a further window into the complex mind maze of the group – two stunning acoustic tracks that explore a distinct early 70s sound of Yes, Argent and other progressive rock acolytes.

Upon first listen, Matthew Logan Vasquez’s new record As All Get Out (April 7, 2023 on Nine Mile Records) might seem all over the place. “I don’t like linear albums,” admits Vasquez of this eclectic set of songs. “I have enough from each genre that I could probably organize more cohesively, but I’m more interested in collections of stories than sound-alike songs. Disorder is intentional. Life can be disorderly.”

When it comes to stories, When Vasquez is in no shortage. As the lead singer, guitarist, and most prominent songwriter for rock stalwarts Delta Spirit, he’s toured the world many times over, including appearances at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk Festival, and Austin City Limits, as well as TV appearances on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and Later With Jools Holland. He’s accumulated the mileage to warrant a diverse tracklist.

Recently sobe sober, married with two sons, and living in the pastoral Hill Country outside of Austin, Texas, Vasquez describes the last few years as contemplative. He’s done well not only to reflect, but embrace new sorts of stories, discern which are worth telling, and craft each with intention. Vasquez’s perspective on As All Get Out is at its most evolved—a nuanced fusion of the raw, ragged energy which has propelled his rock and roll career, and the more quietly grinding tact of adulthood’s demands.

Mapache LP Restocks

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo's breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt sound verges on cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them.

Youngn's Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci, the Mapache boys, were barely in their 20s and already rising to the top of the new wave of West Coast Cosmic Americana. Born and raised in Glendale, California, their breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt yet heady sound, was honed by surfing the beaches and exploring the deserts and canyons of their native California. Clay spent time in Northern California while Sam worked in Mexico, living out what would become the songs on their debut self-titled album.

The lineage of Mapache has blood running back to the first wave of psychedelic country revivalists Beachwood Sparks. Clay is a cousin of Beachwood main man Chris Gunst. Chris and I went to bat for Mapache by helping them score their first club shows and recording sessions with Dan Horne. Dan eventually produced this album at the time-travelled halls of legendary Valentine Recording Studios, where the tape rolled and captured the live spirited harmony, skillful strumming and genuinely well-crafted songs that everyone from Chris Robinson to Jonathan Richman have fallen in love with. The real charm lies in the simplicity of their voices and the songs that recall a young Gene Clark, The Louvins, Crosby, Stills and Townes ... it's all there and more.

One memorable night they showed up to a GospelbeacH gig with deep surfer tans and big white circles around their eyes just like raccoons...(Mapache is Spanish for Raccoon). The boys set up on stage, sang and played their timeless and soon to be classic songs into a single microphone. Time stood still, and the normally chatty LA crowd closed their mouths and opened their ears and their hearts to Mapache. At that very moment I knew they were on their way. - Brent Rademaker Los Angeles 2017

"This record is about as close to the sound of home as you can get." says Mapache's Sam Blasucci. "We recorded it with a bunch of our friends in the house where we were living in a neighborhood that we loved. It's a family vibe through and through."

It made perfect sense, then, for Mapache to name their new album in honor of the place at the heart of it all: Liberty Street. Produced by longtime collaborator Dan Horne (Cass McCombs, Allah-Lahs), From Liberty Street captures Mapache at their

finest, blurring the lines between past and present, between retro and modern, between traditional folk and cosmic country. The songs here draw on everything from Mexican boleros and Hawaiian-steeped surf to Bakersfield twang and lonesome cowboy campfire tunes, and Blasucci and his musical partner, Clay Finch, deliver them with the kind of easygoing charm and natural intuition usually reserved for blood brothers or married couples. It's an instantly engaging chemistry they share, a captivating musical bond that mirrors the comfort, closeness, and camaraderie of the album's homespun roots.

Roscoe is a road dog. The 14-year-old Boston Terrier has been there for the whole ride of Mapache, Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci’s band, which has grown from being the casual project of two longtime buds to one of the most formidable cosmic-folk acts around. “Roscoe’s been through a lot of shit,” says Blasucci, the dog’s formal owner. “He’s been all around the country, come on tour a little bit.” With some bemused pride, Finch points out that, for a few years, he and Blasucci bunked together in a room in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that was just big enough to fit two twin beds. “It was the two of us and the dog,” he laughs.

Naturally, Roscoe has found himself the subject of a good handful of Mapache songs in the past—and on Roscoe’s Dream, the band’s third LP of originals, he takes center stage. (That’s him in quilt form on the album cover.)

Just as much an easygoing trip with Gram Parsons into the desert as a mad dash with the Grateful Dead away from the law, Roscoe’s Dream is the purest distillation yet of the distinct Mapache sound, which has been brewing for many years now.

• 1ST PRESSING ON SILVER VINYL

The title track to The Hackles’ third studio album, What a beautiful thing I have made is about longing, regret and all the things that can’t be controlled in life — and how we try to make peace with that reality. The themes weave through the album, personal and weighty but with a sly side of fantasy novel references. (Can you spot the nod to Terry Pratchett? Hint: It’s not turtles all the way down)

Formed in 2017, The Hackles are Kati Claborn (vocals/guitar/banjo/clarinet) and Luke Ydstie (vocals/guitar/bass/keys) of Blind Pilot, and Halli Anderson (vocals/violin) of River Whyless and Horse Feathers. Claborn and Ydstie also play regularly with Horse Feathers as well as folk legend Michael Hurley and “cosmic country lawn gnome” Bart Budwig.

The Hackles’ new album pushes the trio’s experimental folk sound and interest in playing with harmony, voice and genre. It is an album firmly rooted in place, written from their homes above the Columbia River in Astoria, Ore., and recorded in the Astoria-based Rope Room studio.

Building on the themes of her most recent album, ‘Medieval Femme’, Fatima Al Qadiri’s newest release sees her pairing up with fellow Kuwaiti vocalist Gumar. The EP - also titled ‘Gumar’, Arabic for "moon" - is an homage to a style of lamentation singing that both Fatima and Gumar grew up with and were heavily influenced by, and for which the latter received formal training as a teenager.

On these four short songs, Fatima provides a minimal counterpoint to Gumar's elegant vocals, a coalescence that powerfully and sympathetically complements and extends with cosmic, almost elemental depth. Serious and mournful in tone, the record ruminates on the subject of unrequited love, arguably the most common theme in Arabic music past and present.

The cover is an original artwork by Kuwaiti artist Khalid al Gharaballi, Fatima's bestie and long -time collaborator.

Following up their *very* well-received 2021 self-titled debut album, Chime School are back with more perfect pop, this time on that most pop of formats, the 7" single. "Coming To Your Town" was recorded while sick with COVID and rather fittingly is a feverish attempt to describe the reactionary political moment that seemed to infect the Bay Area during the pandemic. Leave it to Chime School to pen a classic 12-string jangle pop tune about the breakdown of civil society. It's not all cats and motorbikes chez Chime School!

On the flip side we have the band's lovely Brighter/Field Mice-esque take of Buzzcocks' "Love You More." Originally released on the Oakland Weekender Buzzcocks covers cassette, it's available on vinyl here for the first time and adds a whole new dimension to the Chime School story.

Starting out in 2000 as a passionate, yet naïve rock band from a the Swedish town of Jönköping, the Mary Onettes have been on a long journey containing a few downhill slopes and a lot of brick walls, but the band have managed to stay together because of their love for music and each other Although development is crucial for a band one thing has remained the same, the songs The band revolves around Philip Ekström’s songwriting and although some songs have been stripped down, rebuilt or even thrown away they have kept coming

Cola Falls - LP 12” maxi9singel

The Mary Onettes return with an LP containing the celebrated single ‘Cola Falls’ along with the b-side ‘Wait Out A Ghost’ and last years single “What I Feel In Some Places” These songs return the dreamy, overcast pop that we’ve come to love from The Mary Onettes while being framed around a simple, lyrical storyline Ekström says that ‘Cola Falls’ conjures the “high, relentless sound of running water” bubbling forth from a waterfall in his hometown - a waterfall that, as a kid, he imagined flowing with soda.

This album contains the first recordings of modern music from the Sahara and mark the birth of the genre that is known in the West as ‘Desert Blues’ or ‘Desert Rock’. Ahl Nana changed the folk music of the Sahara to modern, cosmopolitan music by using Western instruments like the electric guitar. They paved the way for artists like Ali Farka Touré, Tinariwen, Mdou Moctar or Bombino. Although the group is still active today, they only recorded 2 LPs and a handful of singles. All these recordings took place in 1971 at the Boussiphone studios in Casablanca. The records were never distributed and therefore remained unknown for almost 50 years, until Radio Martiko discovered a batch of unsold factory stock a few years ago. On this album, you will find a selection of these revolutionary recordings.
