Jess Williamson • TIME AIN’T ACCIDENTAL

After releasing the critically-acclaimed Plains album (I Walked

With You A Ways, 2022) with Waxahatchee, Jess Williamson’s Time Ain’t Accidental is the sound of a woman running into her life and art head-on. With a vocal dynamic kindred to Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, Williamson blends the emotional immediacy and story-telling of traditional country with the artful, wholly honest transmissions of songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Terry Allen. The album’s reckoning with loss, isolation, romance, and personal reclamation signals both a stylistic and tectonic shift for Williamson: from someone who once made herself small to an artist emboldened by her power as an individual.

DJ-Kicks: DJ Koze

DJ Koze – with his friendly and sometimes slightly melancholic take on the world – is one of the greatest auteurs of club music today, and one of the few internationally active DJs who dares to make music that has relevance beyond the dance floor.

During the 70-minute journey on his DJ Kicks – the 50th edition – Kosi Kos manages to establish a uniform color even though genres alternate in a way that is rarely heard on a mix CD: the stripped down hip hop of Madlib, brutalist Berghain techno, timeless songwriting, floating indie-pop and outlier numbers that oscillate between absurdity and melancholy Koze's disregard for the stylistic yoke presents him with an immense challenge. Hence, almost all the tracks are more or less edited, and one is fully rhymed (Session Victim: Hyuwee).

Koze rambles on here himself: "I didn't want to kick around sophisticated knowledge, but rather try and weave together some good gems that would make sense to anyone, even people who aren't necessarily music nerds" But this is blabbing that you can count on, also because he approaches the term "mix" from a different angle and doesn't even try to make something fit that doesn't fit: "During the day, I don't need to hear anything that's mixed on the beat. I put the focus on making sure that it works harmoniously – the idea is more to create the impression of a radio show, like people such as John Peel did so uniquely There is a giant cosmos of music and it runs through my filter".

The slo-beat pioneers Kruder & Dorfmeister of Vienna are among the hottest producers in the dance universe. Even though they only produced two unreleased maxis, big names like Count Basie, Bomb The Bass, Alex Reece or United Future Organization had some of their tracks remixed by these exceptional producers.

Their productions on compilations of Ninja Tune, SSR and Wall Of Sound are considered mile stones regarding the trip-hop genre and many major companies are trying to release their debut album.

During the work for DJ-Kicks and their debut album they refused doing remixes for U2, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello and the Fantastic Four!

Everything feels like it has been leading to Interplay, Ride’s forthcoming seventh album, the third since their 2015 reunion. It’s the sound of the group connecting all the dots, taking the frenzied guitar attacks, hypnotic grooves and dreamy melodic hooks of their early work and setting it to a more expansive sonic template, one that takes in synth flourishes, psychedelic folk, electronic beats and noir-pop soundscapes.

It has been a period of adversity in the world of Ride. Much of that was down to writing and recording during a pandemic –a period of adversity shared by everyone, everywhere – but there was also break-ups and a messy legal battle with an ex-manager that, singer and guitarist Mark Gardener states, “threatened our very existence.” It has instilled in the record a feeling of defiance, an album that pairs classic Ride lyrical hallmarks such as escapism, dreams, the dissatisfaction of modern life, yearning and freedom with a sense of resilience.

Songs began springing up in a variety of ways. Initially working at Gardener’s own OX4 studio, there were extended jams from which pieces of music would be honed upon and reworked into something more concise whilst each band member also brought in their own home-recorded demos to work from too. That everything was filtered through what happens when the four-piece play in a room together is alluded to the record’s title.

After a year or so of sporadic sessions at OX4, the record started to take a more defined shape when, at producer Richie Kennedy’s suggestion, they decamped to Vada Studios in the Midlands. Kennedy, who was part of Erol Alkan’s team on Ride’s previous two records, had entered the sessions as a spare pair of hands but his role grew organically into producer. He became a crucial part of Interplay’s creation – the band credit him as a galvanising force when they were running out of steam. Interplay is a record in the old-school sense, a rich listen that flows from start to finish, at times urgent and formidable, at others wistful and melancholic. It’s the sound of a great British band hitting a second peak. It’s a record about perseverance, about sticking together, about finding a way forward. Nine years after coming back together, Ride keep rewriting their story.

SALES POINTS:

• Ride’s 7th studio album, produced by Richie Kennedy and the band. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer.

• The album is dedicated to the legendary mastering engineer, John Davis, who very sadly passed away shortly after working on this record.

• Double vinyl cut at 45rpm for maximum fidelity. Label contact

Our fifth chapter is the one where we seek, savor, and settle. The muse found us in the depths of raising children, nurturing relationships, surviving a world-changing virus, bidding farewell, shifting our mindsets, and discovering a sense of peace heretofore unseen. Our third decade of life has proven to be one of routine, rest, and realization, and these songs are about the lessons we’ve learned. We’ve learned to be space-holders and defenders of the people we hold close. We’ve learned from deep, steady love in various forms. We’ve learned to let go of people and perceptions and priorities that just didn’t make the cut as we weighed what is right and important and worth keeping. We’ve learned how all the things we’ve always treasured continue to withstand the pressure of time. If you notice an upward trend to the mood and emotions, you’re on target-we have found calm waters, for now. - The Secret Sisters

ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO ECHO DANCING

STREET DATE: MARCH 29, 2024

“This record breathes a second life into these songs,” says Alejandro Escovedo of Echo Dancing, the Americana pioneer’s new album where he reconceptualizes the songs of his storied career. The variety of songs range from his short-lived rock quartet Buick MacKane, rarities from his ‘80s alt-country outfit The True Believers, to the celebrated songs of his solo discography from his debut album all the way to his most recent sprawling masterpiece, The Crossing. Highlights include a reimagined trip-hop-funk hybrid of Escovedo’s “Castanets” (retitled here as “Castañuelas’’), a blistering version of “Bury Me” that finds that songwriter now older than the characters he was singing about, as well as songs co-written with trailblazers such as Chuck Prophet, Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and J. Steven Soles. At age 73, Escovedo continues to reshape his ever-changing sound and experiment with the boundaries of music.

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS

We are proud to present two unreleased sides from the late Queen of modern soul, and her Dap-Kings. Recorded during the sessions for Soul of a Woman and penned by sax stalwart and Daptone co-founder Neal Sugarman, "Don't Wanna Lose You" is a heavy slice of  soul sophistication teeming with groove and vibe. "Don't Give a Friend a Number"  is a haunting, R&B tinged mover whose eerie background vocals provide the perfect backdrop for Sharon to take an unqualified lover to task.

LEON DINERO

Leon Dinero returns with more rocksteady magic from producer Victor Axelrod. Originally written and recorded by James Hunter, "Heartbreak" gets the Axelrod treatment, turning this mid-tempo R&B gem on its head. The laid back vocal and tasteful organ give "Heartbreak" a wholly fresh vibe whilst staying respectfully true to the original. On the flip is "Cut Both Ways" an instrumental version courtesy of The Inversions. One listen and you'll find that these are some of the baddest musicians in the game.

JALEN NGONDA

An unreleased gem from the Come Around and Love Me sessions, "Here to Stay" is a gorgeously breezy ballad that will most definitely appeal to fans of the sweet soul output from our Penrose imprint. A standout track from the aforementioned long player, "If You Don't Want My Love" delivers a one-two punch of class and style that harkens back to the sounds coming out of Motown in the late sixties and early seventies. Coupled with Jalen's uncommonly soulful voice and lyrical prowess you have another top-shelf composition that can hang with the very best of 'em.

LEE FIELDS

Arguably the very best soul singer alive, Lee comes correct with two massive tunes from his critically acclaimed Sentimental Fool LP. With the deep piano intro, frantic shuffle and pleading vocal "Two Jobs" has the conviction of James Brown with the swing of Bobby Bland. A sound very few folks could pull off, yet Lee triumphs with command and swagger in equal measure. "Save Your Tears for Someone New" is a deep, dark R&B ballad tailored-made for Lee's ferociously soulful voice. A veritable masterclass in rhythm and soul.

OVERVIEW

Released in 1968 on America’s coolest label Elektra Records, Nico ’s sophomore solo release The Marble Index was an instant avant-garde masterpiece. Nico’s haunting voice and droning harmonium predicted the Gothic movement and John Cale ’s startlingly modern classical production ensured the album’s timeless appeal.

New York-based artist Kelly Moran unveils her second album for Warp Records, “Moves in the Field.” As an accomplished and highly sought-after composer, Moran has collaborated with artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never and FKA Twigs as part of their live ensembles. As a solo artist, Moran has developed a unique strand of experimental piano compositions across a critically acclaimed discography.

“Moves in the Field” showcases duets with the Yamaha Disklavier, a technologically advanced version of a player piano. Moran augments her pianistic abilities by utilizing the Disklavier to write intricate piano parts that go beyond human capabilities, resulting in multi-layered compositions that blur the lines between human and machine. Influenced by contemporary classical, alternative, and electronic music, the album stands at a precipice above two unlikely worlds.

MR. SCRUFF - NINJA TUNA

(VINYL DEBUT EDITION)

Release Date: Friday 29th March, 2024

The brilliant “Ninja Tuna” is the latest Mr. Scruff album to get a deluxe makeover. Originally released as a CD in 2008 it’s now available for the first time on vinyl as a deluxe triple LP (with bonus tracks) pressed on biovinyl with infinity peelable tuna sticker on the cover spanning 18 slabs of “foot-tapping funk and ball-busting breaks” (Mixmag). Mr. Scruff plays the role of Skipper with consummate ease and leads a motley crew of guests including Roots Manuva, Quantic, Alice Russell, Andreya Triana, Danny Breaks, Pete Simpson, and Skuff & Inja.

Packed with the perkiest dancefloor heaters known to humankind (‘Donkey Ride’, Kalimba’, ‘Get On Down’, ‘Give Up To Get’), breaksome soul jazz – ‘Music Takes You Up (with Alice Russell) and ‘Hold On (with Andreya Triana)’ –and lustrous digi dancehall in the shape of ‘Nice Up The Function (feat. Roots Manuva)’, Scruff is in total command of the dancefloor and gives the bassbins a comprehensive workout from beginning to end.

Mr Scruff’s combination of taking his music very seriously while managing not to take himself too seriously has made him unique in British dance and has helped him forge a sound and philosophy in which drinking tea holds mythological status and where it’s always the music which gets you high. As a DJ, he plays across the board, flitting between soul, funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, latin, african, ska, disco, house, funk, breaks, soundtracks and loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. His cartoon drawings illustrate gig flyers, posters, record sleeves, t-shirts and usually accompany him at gigs as live animated visuals.

PARIS HILTON: PARIS

(Tiger’s Eye Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: MARCH 29, 2024

Not everybody has not one, not two, but twelve producers attached to her debut release. Not everybody has her one and only album pranked by British artist Banksy (who substituted a topless photo for the cover). Nope, not everybody is Paris Hilton, who has lived in the public eye since, well, forever. She first announced plans to make an album in 2003, during her run on the reality TV series The Simple Life. Originally entitled Screwed, and then Paris Is Burning, the record—finally simply entitled Paris—came out in 2006. And it was…uh…good? Yeah, for real. This record goes expensively pedicured cuticle to cuticle with anything Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson or any other pop culture chanteuse of the like ever put out, and the Paris the heiress displays some real savvy both in her taste of material and the Madonna-like manipulation of her sex symbol image. And her voice? Definitely respectable despite what the haters said. Indeed, the single “Stars Are Blind” went top 20, and the album itself went all the way up to #6, selling over 600,000 copies worldwide. With new mother Paris in the studio working on her second album, we thought the time was right for a revival of Paris, so we’ve taken the fetching photos from the CD package and given them plenty of acreage to show their stuff, with a gatefold jacket and 4-color printed inner sleeve. And our run of Tiger’s Eye vinyl goes smashingly with the album art. In short: a pop culture keepsake from an enduring pop culture icon!

The One & Only SCOTT H. BIRAM

After almost thirty years of tirelessly writing, recording and touring the front and backroads of America as a solo bluesman—to a wide array of critical accolades—Biram found himself, along with much of the world, suddenly stopped cold by the pandemic. Once again unwilling to allow outsized forces slow him down, he took advantage of the shutdown to write, record and produce nine new songs and two traditional covers for his new album, The One & Only Scott H. Biram, his 13th overall and 9th for Bloodshot Records.

“I’m constantly trying to go back to the junky, lo-fi sounds of my early records,” says Biram. “But it’s harder to do now. The more you learn about production the harder it is to convey that genuine unproduced feeling. I have to compromise between overproduced and lo-fi, so it sounds pro, but still keeps that grittiness.”

The music on The One and Only Scott H. Biram has the down home, in-your-face feel that Biram is noted for. “No Man’s Land” opens with a blues turnaround played on a twanging electric guitar, backed by a stomping bass and drum backbeat.

With The One & Only Scott H. Biram the singer once again proves himself to be an unstoppable force, refusing to bow in the face of outside challenges and demonstrating a unique ability to live up to the traditions of rough-hewn, individualistic Texas-borne music. He looks forward to returning to the highways and byways of America touring throughout 2024.

The dirty old one-man band is BACK

“Steel-jawed and fully-cocked musical madness coming at you like a face full of claws”

Biram will be on tour forever. . . and he’ll be promoting this record until his next one drops.

La Langue Bleue

Duophonic Super 45s

Limited Black vinyl 7”. This is the end credit song to a new AMC show called Monsieur Spade [Queen's Gambit writer / director]. La Langue Bleue is a collaboration between Los Angeles avantrock outfit Storefront Church, legendary singer of Stereolab Laetitia Sadier, and producer/drummer Henry Kwapis (Dijon, Dominic Fike, Dora Jar).

La Langue Bleue was written to be featured in AMC’s Monsieur Spade; a noir set in the 60s on the French countryside spinning off of Dashiell Hammett’s iconic character Sam Spade, now played by Clive Owen. The song, with its surreal lyrics and cinematic tone, references the giants of French film music such as Jean-Claude Vannier, Francois de Roubaix and Michel Legrand.

Astrel K –The Foreign Department

TLV171LP 2024-03-29 5055869550796

CD TLV171CD 2024-03-29 5055869550802

The Foreign Department is the second album by Astrel K, the solo project of Stockholm-based British ex-pat, Rhys Edwards. Those already familiar with Edwards’ work will likely know him for fronting the cultishly great Ulrika Spacek, and given he operates as the principal songwriter in both projects, much of the same hallmarks of his cathartic, elliptical songwriting are present in Astrel K Nonetheless, The Foreign Department feels like a rubicon moment of sorts, and the album that Edwards has unconsciously been working towards his entire creative life.

As a title, The Foreign Department frames a life-in-transition/artist-in-exile document that maps two impromptu moves in twelve months for its songwriter: the first from London in pursuit of a relationship, the second between homes in Stockholm as that decade long relationship then suddenly dissolved. Indeed, diffusion, dissolution and reconstitution feel like appropriate touchstones for its recurring themes. Written amidst the flux of two states, the resulting eleven tracks came to represent a precognitive search for shifting identity and with it forming an unwittingly biographical record.

With a former life stripped away, there emerged an opportunity to reinvent a sense of self through art, now not just as a writer, but a composer also. Developing the confidence to arrange songs in ways he'd previously considered off-limits, while also taking cues from the opulent string and brass arrangements of records like Mercury Rev's Deserters' Songs and Death of A Ladies Man by Leonard Cohen, Edwards enlisted a range of performers to bring to life the mini-symphonies forming in his head.

For all its troubled origins, The Foreign Department is a remarkably warm sounding collection. Edwards' lyrics are knotty and neurotic, dancing around the poetry of quarter-life anxiety, but the music itself is often joyous and uplifting, the combination expressing that neat duality of melancholic euphoria.

Midas Fall –Cold Waves Divide Us

Records

Limited pressing of 500 LPs on 180g vinyl (clear with orange and black splatter). Scottish alt/post/progressive-rock outfit Midas Fall release their Fifth studio album, ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ on March 8th, 2024 worldwide on Monotreme Records.

Michael Hamilton joins founding members Elizabeth Heaton and Rowan Burn for the followup to their 2018 Prog Magazine Awards ‘Limelight Award’ winning album, ‘Evaporate’. ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ sees Midas Fall at their most confidently visceral, each song moving beautifully between quiet and loud, gentle and crushing. “This album is a heavier and bigger experience than the last album”, says Heaton. “We kept the atmospheric strings and 80s synths of Evaporate but wanted to add heavier layered elements, to represent more what we sound like live.”

Opener ‘In the Morning We’ll Be Someone Else’ starts quietly with serene piano and vocals, ominously ratcheting up the tension to walls of crashing guitars and Heaton’s soaring vocals. ‘I Am Wrong’ thunders along on pounding rhythmic drums swirling around heavy swathes of low and delicate melodic highs. On ‘Monsters’, the band are more contemplative, with an ethereal beginning making way for gorgeously syncopated guitar and drums, whilst ‘Cold Waves Divide Us’ builds slower, allowing Heaton’s voice to gracefully float over the growing force beneath it. ‘Avalanche’ is a bittersweet lullabye showcasing Heaton’s heart-rending vocals in one of the quieter moments on the album. ‘Point of Diminishing Return’ sees a more electronic influence, with glittering shimmered synths taking the space where guitar melodies were, but with all of the Post-Rock beauty that the duo are known for, something ‘Little Wooden Boxes’ showcases perfectly, expertly hovering between gentle clean guitar and piano, and exhilarating, uplifting full-band, full-bore epic.

CREATION REBEL REBEL VIBRATIONS

A rare early album by Creation Rebel back in print for the first time since 1979 Rebel Vibrations was originally issued by the pre-On-U Sound label Hitrun. The rhythms stem from one of the first recording sessions organised by maverick producer Adrian Sherwood, taking advantage of ace Jamaican drummer Lincoln “Style” Scott, sticksman for the Roots Radics, visiting the UK for the first time

Pairing him up with UK-based players such as Crucial Tony, Lizard Logan, Doctor Pablo and Clifton Morrison, the result is a set of tough and uncompromising dub tunes, or as Sherwood describes it: “a structure of suppressed rhythms and unique possibilities in sonic space.”

Cat No.: ONULP4

UPC: 5060263727224

Format: 1LP Black Vinyl + download card

Release Date: 29 March 2024

First time available on vinyl since 1982. Psychotic Jonkanoo was the sixth Creation Rebel album in three years, originally licensed to the post-punk oriented Glaswegian label Statik. Another solid set of killer dub, albeit less instrumentally inclined than their previous efforts and more focussed on militant-style conscious chants Bandleader Crucial Tony was aided on the vocal front by harmonies from other group members, in a style reminiscent of Black Uhuru, plus the occasional guest such as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols and Public Image Limited providing backing harmony (!) on “Mother Don’t Cry”, and the legendary Deadly Headley Bennett adding saxophone to the opening track

“Anybody searching Adrian Sherwood's catalogue for an easy point of entry would do well to start here, and everyone else can simply applaud Psychotic Jonkanoo as the last truly great roots reggae album of the 1980s ” All Music

Ratboys The Window

le under: folk indie rock rock

Info:

Ratboys have been recording and releasing music for over a decade, but their newest album, The

Window marks a number of rsts for the band For starters, it was the rst time they’d ever traveled outside their home base of Chicago to record an album, journeying to Seattle to work with producer Chris Walla for three weeks It was also the rst time they’d ever written an album collaboratively from start to nish, having added full-time members Sean Neumann on bass and Marcus Nuccio on drums in recent years The new approaches to writing and recording are immediately apparent on The Window, which showcases the fullest, most expansive version of Ratboys’ sound

After more than ten years and four studio albums together, The

Window nally captures Ratboys as they were always meant to be heard expansive while still intimate, audacious while still tender But most importantly, The

Window is the sound of friends operating as a single, cohesive unit “My dream ever since I started writing songs was to be in a band a proper band with a consistent lineup,” Steiner says “To nally have the chance to play with dear friends who are fully committed, it was all I could ever ask for ”

DENT MAY WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST?

Every morning when Dent May wakes up, the first thing he says is, “What’s for breakfast?” For the Los Angeles-based songwriter and pop auteur, this question is part inside joke with his girlfriend, part sitcom-style catchphrase, and part mantra about getting up every day and persevering in the face of good or bad is happening around you in your life. It’s also the title of his sixth album, which is out on March 29, 2024 via Carpark Records. What’s For Breakfast? is May’s most immediate, nostalgic, and rollicking LP yet, one that’s concerned with breaking daily routines and rediscovering the joys of songwriting.

Over the past 17 years, May has been a consistently adventurous and prolific bedroom pop pioneer and connoisseur of impeccably crafted melodies. Though his songs are always well-written and comfortable, with What’s For Breakfast?, May has freed himself up to more playfully experiment with new and vintage musical inspirations. “I’ve occupied a lot of different lanes over the years,” says May. “I’ve always been drawn to making kaleidoscopic pop inspired by old soul, disco, country, whatever. This time around, I was tapping into music from my childhood, like The Strokes, Weezer and Elephant 6 Collective bands.” By revisiting the music of his youth—— energetic and infectious guitar rock——he found a vibrant palate to explore for this new LP.

Lead single “One Call, That’s All” kickstarts with frenetic guitar-driven intensity. While the track slyly takes its name from the slogan of an ambulance-chasing Mississippi lawyer, May sings of unrequited love and phone-based ennui. “It’s a fast tempo pop-rock song that isn’t like anything I’ve done before,” says May. Elsewhere, opener “You Already Know” showcases May’s goofball lyrical charm with lines about playing chess online and looking like a Dawson’s Creek character. Beyond the jokes in the song, there is a bittersweet recognition of time passing and a call to action when May sings, “Now you already know what time it is / It’s time to live your life / Cuz it’s flying by / No matter the day, week, month or year / It’s time to do a lot / Ready or not.”

What’s For Breakfast? marks another first for Dent in being his most collaborative LP yet. Alongside guest appearances from Jimmy Whispers and co-writes with Paul Cherry, are two standout singles with Jordana and Pearl & The Oysters respectively. Jordana assists on the wistful “Coasting on Fumes,” which captures the feeling of being stuck in a rut while the yearning “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun” guests Pearl and the Oysters. “My first album came out almost 15 years ago, so bringing in others to help out is crucial to keep things interesting,” says May. “I’m constantly falling back in love with music through the eyes of others. This album is about remembering why I like music.”

When Sean Cimino and Isom Innis were getting ready to work on what would become Acid Star, the full-length debut of their syrupy electronic rock group Peel, they started by tapping into the music that they liked as kids. That is, the music they gravitated toward before they had “any taste or judgment,” as Innis puts it.

In some sense, the relationship the duo had with late-’90s mainstream hits was the purest connection to music imaginable, so they decided to recreate some of the rhythms and textures of a few of those songs from memory, and then let the jams lead their way to new ideas. In other words, no thoughts, just vibes: “If you think too hard, and you try too hard, you can kind of ruin the expression that comes out,” says Innis. “But there’s something about trying to recreate a song that was in my DNA before taste came into it that just sounded, listening back, like it had a lot of energy and life.”

Peel have always been based upon a foundation of knowing how to go with the flow. Cimino and Innis first met in 2010 after they had both been asked to join the touring group of Foster the People, and instantly latched onto one another. The two multi-instrumentalists have shared a path during their time in Mark Foster’s influential rock band, going from touring to full-time members, eventually contributing on record as well as on stage. But just as importantly, they’ve been seeing the world and growing up together, bonded by a unique journey in life: “We’ve shared many a bedroom, Isom and I,” Cimino laughs. “Slept on floors, and the back of vans,” Innis adds.

The two developed a musical language all their own over the years, and there wasn’t a whole lot of initial intent behind the sessions that led to the birth of Peel. But when songs like “Catch and Release” and “Citizen X” came out—songs that sounded like Aphex Twin producing New Order—they knew they had to let the world hear what sounds were swirling around in Innis’s loft in downtown Los Angeles. They were right: “Citizen X,” from 2020’s Peel EP, has become a streaming hit.

Generally, Peel songs begin with Cimino on guitar and Innis on drums, but from there it’s anyone’s guess how the music will come together. “We’ll kind of have this foundation of a groove,” explains Innis, “and then we play musical chairs to build up an idea from there.” Innis will move to the synth, grab a bass; Cimino will program drum tracks, arrange string parts, play guitar. And they both sing, trusting each other to take the reins on certain songs based on what comes out of the sessions: “Truly, you hear every bit of Isom and then you hear every bit of me,” Cimino says. “Each of our personalities are shown.”

The results are an album that swirls dance-music paint onto a rock canvas. Inspired in part by genre-bending Creation Records bands like Primal Scream and Madchester groups like Happy Mondays, Acid Star gives a modern spin on a classic formula. The opener, “Y2J,” was one of the results of that childhood-song experiment, and is, appropriately enough, named in reference to Y2K, but slightly askew—one letter off, as it were. “Climax,” a song inspired by the 2018 Gaspar Noé movie of the same name, is a rocket-ship ride of a tune, as much within Nile Rodgers’ wheelhouse as Spoon’s. Still, it’s all squarely a product of the digital-native era of music: “OMG” takes a song about

psychedelic experience and presents it with a sparkling production sound that would make Kevin Parker jealous.

It’s not all dance-floor material, however. Each side of the album is marked by spacey ballads—“Acid Star” and “The Cloak”—both driven by acoustic guitar and gentle vocals that push home the crucially melodic underbelly of Peel itself. “You’re smiling, laughing there, my acid star,” sings Cimino on the former song, an ode to an idea of a certain ephemeral and untouchable type of rock god. “That lyric is a tribute to the power of words beyond our everyday use,” Cimino says. “I was thinking of a term for someone, something, or an idea that is so meaningful—almost too important.” When it came time to decide what to name the album itself, it was right there in front of them.

"This new song ["Citizen X"] does vibrate with the weird aura of a live show; there’s a sense of disorientation and detachment, and Cimino’s vocals—which are reminiscent of Paul Banks’ in Turn on the Bright Lights—are like a guiding light." FLOOD

"Melding gothic post-punk with psychedelic synth-pop, “Rom-Com” casts a long, dark shadow—their retro synthesizers and gloomy textures give it a compressed, chilling feel—but its energetic grooves bring the song to life." - Paste

"The song ["Citizen X"] itself began as a kind of shoegaze piece, with PEEL teasing out fresh elements while indulging their Cocteau Twins fetish." - Clash

High Llamas present Hey Panda — a modern pop music/deep listening experience that could only issue forth from their personal quadrant of the galaxy. Hey Panda projects soulfully through an enervating abstract of today’s popular music; the sound of the Llamas ’ stately melodies and expressive ditties laid open — blissfully shattered — with drums and vocals hitting different, burning sounds and contemporary production twists pulling the ear at every turn.

For the past few decades, High Llamas have trafficked in contemporary pop sounds directed toward the avant end of the spectrum as much as not. But here the message was clear. Llamas ’ composer-in-residence Sean O’Hagan was determined to let go. Hey Panda does just that, with a set of tunes reflecting on multiple levels how definitions change over the course of a lifetime, radiating an optimism derived from the diverse conundrums of today.

Eight years since their last release, the pop musical Here Come The Rattling Trees, High Llamas have reinvented themselves again, mixing their peerless harmonic voice with what Sean regards as the “extraordinarily good” production sounds of today on Hey Panda

Choosing not to look backward to former golden ages celebrated in earlier Llamas eras, Sean ’s instead found himself opened up by the sounds of music brought into the house by his adult children and the sounds encountered at sessions for which he’s recently written arrangements. In addition to the more traditional contributions he made to The Coral ’s Sea of Mirrors album, plus his score for the Safdie brothers’ 2022 film production, Funny

Street Date: March 29, 2024

Pages, Sean ’s drawn great inspiration through working with Fryars , Rae Morris, King Krule, Pearl and The Oyster, while also soaking up the work of Tierra Whack and Chicago’s Pivot Gang , and being cheered on from a distance by longtime admirer Tyler The Creator

Thus, Sean ’s producer procedural has evolved again, with upgrades fi rst detected in his 2019 solo eff ort, Radum Calls, Radum Calls . With a cover of Billie Eilish ’s “Wish You Were Gay” arranged for Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy ’s Blind Date Party, along with his COVID-era solo single, “The Wild Are Welcome,” Sean has leveled up again and again, leading to the delirious revelations of Hey Panda .

Hey Panda ’s wide reach is aided by two co-writes from Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, (who bonded with Sean over a shared love of gospel soul during writing sessions), guest vocals from Rae Morris and Sean ’s daughter Livvy, production twists from Fryars and the stalwart, flexible presence of High Llamas

For all of its sense of departure, Hey Panda is a movement in the High Llama s oeuvre that’s been a long time in development. Aspects of soul music were addressed at the time of Can Cladders ; similarly, aspects of electronic dance music were in the mix in the late 90s, around the time of Cold and Bouncy But nothing up to now has refocused the music of High Llamas so completely. Sharing the impulse of late-period Miles Davis and Quincy Jones , with further inspiration from Steve Lacy, SZA , Sault , No Name and Ezra Collective, among many others, Sean O’Hagan and High Llamas are living joyfully in the new and the now, with Hey Panda!

This is long overdue. I mean, looooooonnnnnng overdue. A solo album by Jim.

The trap kit so straightforward, so mysterious. What’s inside those things? Air and light from which century? Which continent? Which planet? Depending on how and when you hit them it can be a vibration sent through a prehistoric breath, particles of Saturn’s atmosphere, the dead, wet leaves you walked through on the way to the first day of school. These are the memories of the drums on this record. Infinite and personal. Editing each other as they muscle to the front or soft shoe to the shadow. Cymbals can override/cancel everything out wipe your memory clear or make the memory clearer. Drums are the instrument where you can feel the presence of the player the most the full body and sense the thoughts of the player the most. The instrument with the most choices to be made sends out the most brainwaves. A bouquet of brainwaves is on this LP.

Jim oversees it all, surveys from the lost place we’re in, the void the drumless song. We trust. We trust, Jim. His big green eyes search for the right tool (mallet, brush, etc), eyes that search you like you’re a song he wants to join, wants to see if he can add to or understand.

Before humans, drums were playing these drums. Genesis was a solo drum piece. After humans, these drums, this album. Someone the last man is out in a spaceship at the edge of space. He plays a single chord on a synth to set time free from its bind and then lets go. This album sets time free, lets it frolic, lets it graze, lets it remember.

This is a record of thoughts, memories, surgery. A deft surgical operation you may not even realize is happening as it’s happening but you’re back on your feet when it’s over. Memories refreshed.

Did you really even listen to it?

JOHN PRIMER & BOB CORRITORE

CRAWLIN’ KINGSNAKE

This is the fourth collaboration album for John Primer and Bob Corritore. John and Bob have always had the Chicago spark. It was evident on their first release together in 2013, and on each release since. But this particular album feels like a new height has been achieved.

There is a simultaneous, rocking forcefulness, while also exhibiting an uninhibited, gliding easiness. This album also features arguably the best possible A team for Chicago blues! With Bob Stroger on the bass, Jimi Primetime Smith on second Guitar, Anthony Geraci on the piano, and Wes Starr on drums, this band sounds like the Muddy Waters band of decades ago! Both Primer and Corritore appear at the top of their game with Primer recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, as well as numerous award wins, and a Grammy nomination. Likewise, Corritore has been actively hitting the European festival circuit, released 5 critically acclaimed albums in 2023, was the subject of numerous articles and received numerous nominations, and a number of wins. But all of that is secondary to what happens in the studio and what you have in your hand is a powerful straight-ahead album of sacred Chicago blues done by two artists who have devoted their entire lives to the purity of the blues.

Active since 2001, Ayyuka was one of the first bands to look back at 70’s Turkish music to find a new voice. Not caught up in the Retromania but reincarnating Turkish Psychedelic within their own style, the band managed to develop an unmistakeable unique sound. Inspirations of Dick Dale, John Frusciante, and local heroes like Erkin Koray, Orhan Gencebay, make their music more guitar oriented but their fascination with film music and improvisation creates unexpected twists within their songs. Right after their eponymous debut in 2007, the band shared stage with Sonic Youth and Jonathan Richman. Heading to a completely instrumental music, their 3rd studio recording “Sömester” had already become a cult album for record collectors. They’ve collaborated with Orlando Julius, Ilhan Ersahin and had guests on almost every album. Their latest full length “Maslak Halayı” was a creative collaboration with Calibro35 genius Tommaso Colliva. The worldwide hype of "Yukadans” will now be followed by their upcoming EP "Zaman Ziyan”, showcasing four brand new instrumental tracks that will transport listeners through a kaleidoscope of musical landscapes, experimenting with techniques of music writing and flirting with genres like afro-beat, funk, dub or arabesque.

Igor Osypov

Motherland?2K14

Igor Osypov is an artist standing at a complex crossroads where different worlds intersect, as a Ukrainian exiled in Berlin, unable to return home, he is obliged to negotiate different cultural and political identities, and as a forward-looking contemporary musician he chooses to negotiate the different genres of jazz, rock, electronica and other less easily defined traditions

Motherland?2K14 is his response: an extraordinary project exploring identity and belonging. Using his own electronically realized sketches as a base, Osypov took a band of his favorite musicians into the studio - Uli Kempendorff on tenor sax, trumpeter Dima Bondarev and Povel Widestrand on keys, underpinned by drummer extraordinaire Fabian Rosch- and expanded the sonic palette to include collaborators from across the world - saxophonist Logan Richardson, Petter Eldh on double bass, Bodek Janke on tabla and percussion, and beatmaker/ producerLudwig Wandinger. Simultaneously he called on the international community of his fellow exiled Berlin artists to ask them the question: "Where do you go when you cannot go home?" Audio fragments of the resulting interviews, in multiple languages, are interwoven with the music to create a uniquely powerful, viscerally moving statement.

In each of the ten tunes, the interview voices interweave with the horns, led by Bondarev's alternately soaring and tender trumpet, joining in chorus over the raw energy of Osypov's bass guitar and Rosch's ever - shifting drum patterns. Then they are layered with electronic effects, creating pieces that have an alt - rock conciseness and power, opening out to reveal shifting complexities underneath the group textures, drawing the listener ever deeper in trumpet!"

Motherland?2K14 is a powerful and original heartfelt statement, at once personal, political and musical, and full of hope.

ZACHARY JAMES WATKINS

“AFFIRMATIVE ACTION” SIGE Records / New release 2024

Zachary James Watkins - on his practice:

My art investigates the rich area of resonance and I engage in dialogue influenced by past works, current concerns and new directions. Works attempt to immerse the senses bringing to the fore natural phenomenon. I believe that sound can heal and that the conscious investigation of harmonic tunings, acoustic resonance as well as social relationships can yield powerful experiences.

One of my objectives as an artist is to expose natural phenomena. I am interested in the physical aspects of sound and have developed a sensibility that focuses heavily on Resonance. Vibration is at the core of my experience of Resonance. I am moved by natural resonances that exist around us all. My own work strives to develop and nurture Resonances by negotiating sensitive relationships among a number of what I identify as critical ingredients for psychedelic phenomena: resonant bodies exciting harmonic energy creating diverse waves, beating and phase patterns diffused spatially with full dynamic range and a deep attention to the body and how it engages with the environment.

Zachary James Watkins - selected quotes from his liner notes to “Affirmative Action”:

Affirmative Action offers my practice in three formations, each approach reflecting my current sonic and social concerns: 1) solo improvisation on harmonic guitar, electronics and resonant space, 2) through composed notation and 3) ensemble writing involving pros. High Vibration Resonance.

Wide open skies, flat lands descending into canyon, dust storms, thunder, terracotta, dew grass and the long duration cicada song. Deeply sensual, resonant and immersive memories of Texas that I hold close. These images act as an escape and are painted against a backdrop of oppressive and deadly ideologies. Since I can remember, sound and listening have always offered space to reflect and be. Rest in Peace all Victims of Systematic Oppression and Power to the People.

The Sunset Violent began in a disused frat house in the American Yucca Valley. Kimbie’s founding members Dominic Maker & Kai Campos began work on their first proper album together since 2017’s Love What Survives – the decision was made to leave London. Campos and Maker relocated for a month to a town in the middle of a desert. The resulting album, finished in London with longtime confidante Dillip Harris and their band mates Andrea Balency-Béarn and Marc Pell, is 37 minutes of Mount Kimbie at simultaneously their most daring and their most giddily infectious.

Expanded Deluxe Edition

▶ Beggars Arkive is happy to announce a double vinyl expanded deluxe reissue of FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM’S third highly acclaimed album ELIZIUM, released by Beggars Banquet in 1990. The album has been expanded onto a double LP for audio clarity and contains 4 bonus tracks. Brick red pressing.

Recorded and produced by Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson, the audio is via analogue transfer to 96khz/24 bit by John Dent at Loud, with vinyl mastering by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road.

Formed in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim is the creation of vocalist and front man Carl McCoy. Highly influential, especially in the world of goth, but also within the metal and electronic genres, their legacy endures to this day. You can hear their influence on bands like Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, Wolves in The Throne Room, Behemoth and more.

The band’s unique sound, an apocalyptic fusion of Victorian underworld meets Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western, had an appearance to match (wide-brimmed hats, long duster coats and cowboy boots, usually black and smothered in white flour as a substitute for dust), and set them apart from their contemporaries.

Elizium is one of their most beautiful albums and considered by many to be their best. As The Quietus wrote, “it was both their most accessible and their most experimental work, concluding and consolidating the Nephilim’s five-year shamanic journey. Lead-off single and opening track ‘For Her Light’ featured a lengthy midsection that anticipated the apocalyptic post-rock of Godspeed! You Black Emperor (unsurprisingly, it failed to chart), and the album featured some of the band’s hardest rock in the wah-overload of ‘Submission,’ as well as further incorporating dance elements - more successfully and organically than many of their peers, it must be said - on second single ‘Sumerland’.” Louder Sound also called “Sumerland” their “greatest ever track”.

Jim White Really Has a Way With Titles

20th anniversary (gatefold) edition in Substrate Black, with THREE EXTRATRACKS.

Featuring Aimee Mann, M. Ward, Bill Frisell and the Barenaked Ladies, to name just a few of the artists here.

PITCHFORK GAVE IT 8.1 and said, “White has enough guest musicians on this to populate any number of small towns.”They also said “You won’t hear another record like it this year, possibly ever. What all these disparate elements that White pulls together add up to is White’s alone, a style with no real name, American as barbecue sauce on apple pie.”

“Static on The Radio,” which features Aimee Mann, was used in the end credits for El Camino:A Breaking Bad Movie

“The creaking beats, travelogue feel and hard-hitting philosophising give a definite sense that you’re in the company of someone unique here: a spiritual man who has thought long and hard about the world and made no sense of it - and yet made more sense of the dearth of sense than most of us.” -The Guardian “White seems to have turned a corner, taking his songs to places they haven’t gone before.” - Popmatters

“If it’s Southern Weird you’re after, Jim’s your man.” -TheIndependent “Southern roots and existential disorientation.” -The NewYorkTimes

This is the only variant—there are no exclusives planned. Jim White will be on tour in the South in spring 2024. Find the details on his website: https://jimwhitemusic.net/.

The Purple Rain

Joe Pernice has been writing for a long time—most of his life, in fact—and has crafted a remarkable catalog that boldly reinterprets and recasts classic American pop. Who Will You Believe may be his most moving and nuanced album yet; it’s certainly his timeliest. “These songs were all written during the same time period,” he says, “and they all seemed to tap into a mood I was in at the time. I go through spells where I’m a certain way for three or four months. I might be more reticent than usual, or more outgoing. With all of my records—and especially with this one—the songs all feel like they belong together, probably because they all arrived during the same stretch of time.”

In a single six-month stretch he was left reeling from the deaths of three close friends, including David Berman, poet and songwriter for Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, and Gary Stewart, the Rhino Records co-founder and tireless Pernice Brothers supporter since their first album in 1998. “That was such a bad patch when David and Gary both took their own lives. And my cousin Joe Harvard, who started Fort Apache Studios in Boston and was like a brother to me—he died, too. It was such a tough year. I was thinking about them a lot and watching how divided America had become. I was doing my best to try and take nothing for granted.”

Pernice has been releasing albums for over 25 years. And with age comes a greater patience and an immense appreciation for the act of creation. Who Will You Believe showcases a beautiful balance between such sadness and moments of solemnity with warm humor and camaraderie.

WRAPPED IN UPDATED ARTWORK & PRESSED ON YELLOW VINYL

“Something had to change,” says MxPx vocalist/bassist and chief songwriter Mike Herrera about where the band found itself after 13 years, three labels, six albums and a career retrospective DVD/CD. “We were either going to slowly die or do something extraordinary, dig deeper than we ever have before.”

The result was Panic, their first new studio album since 2003’s Before Everything and After and their initial allnew effort for SideOneDummy following their B Movie/AC/ EP DVD/CD collection.

Produced by legendary knob-twiddler Gavin MacKillop (Sugarcult, Goo Goo Dolls, P.I.L., Toad the Wet Sprocket) in the band’s own Bremerton, WA, home studio, channels the band’s classic adolescent angst into a veritable “A-punk-alypse Now.” It’s a glimpse at a world nearing critical mass, but with a renewed energy and hope for not only the future of music, but for our generation.

The sixth album from Still Corners is “Dream Talk”. Beautifully arranged, elegant and wistful, Dream Talks is a set of ten carefully crafted classic songs. From the autumnal opener "Today is the Day" to the hot summer night finale of "Turquoise Moon", Still Corners have created a sound that is focused, stylish and seductive. Tessa Murray says, "The genesis for a lot of these songs came from dreams. Every night I would write down the dreams I could remember. While recording I would pull out my book of dreams and sing over various looped phrases Greg had been working on, the repetitive nature of the looping and singing almost felt like going into a trance. A lot of the songs came from that process, it was fun and what I thought were sort of ramblings ended up surprising us with their various meanings and imagery."

LAFAYETTE AFRO-ROCK BAND MALIK

Strut proudly presents the first official remastered reissue of Lafayette Afro Rock Band's elusive funk/Afro original album, 'Malik,' originally released in 1974

In 1971, an undocumented seven-member Afro-American ensemble known as the Bobby Boyd Congress made a transformative journey from the United States to France Bandleader Frank Abel recollects, "We sensed that the soul and funk market was saturated back home, and our original plan was a brief 6-month stint in Paris. Surprisingly, we ended up staying for a decade." Upon lead singer Bobby Boyd's return to the U.S., the group rebranded as Ice and crossed paths with independent producer Pierre Jaubert, a seasoned studio professional with credits on groundbreaking recordings alongside Charles Mingus, John Lee Hooker, and Archie Shepp, among others

Drawing inspiration from Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated regular rehearsals with Ice He recalled, "I didn't want to mimic Berry, but with seven talented musicians collaborating daily, something unique emerged " The band, residing in Paris and immersed in the African-dominated Barbesse district, began infusing African elements into their music frequently performing with Paris-dwelling Camaroonian and legendary composer Manu Dibango.

Under the new moniker Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the group's music transitioned to predominantly instrumental compositions, featuring a denser Afro-funk sound. Their inaugural recording with the new name, 'Soul Makossa,' included a compelling rendition of Dibango's classic and the impactful break in 'Hihache ' The subsequent release a year later, 'Malik,' refined their sound with the percussive Afro party jam 'Conga,' the atmospheric vocoder and piano-led piece 'Djungi,' and the robust funk of 'Darkest Light '

Despite a limited impact upon its initial release, 'Malik' found appreciation as hip-hop culture flourished in the '80s, establishing itself as a rich source of samples and riffs. 'Conga' was featured in the 'Ultimate Breaks And Beats' series, while the opening horn line from 'Darkest Light' became a pivotal hip-hop motif, employed by Jay-Z, Public Enemy, Wreckx 'N' Effect, and many others.

This remastered reissue, the first of its kind, meticulously crafted by The Carvery from the original tapes, showcases the album in its entirety and includes the full original artwork. Pressed on Translucent Blue Vinyl LP.

LAFAYETTE AFRO-ROCK BAND SOUL MAKOSSA

Strut proudly presents the first official remastered reissue of the funk/Afro classic, Lafayette Afro Rock Band's 'Soul Makossa' from 1973.

In 1971, an undocumented seven-member Afro-American ensemble known as the Bobby Boyd Congress made a transformative journey from the United States to France. Bandleader Frank Abel recollects, "We sensed that the soul and funk market was saturated back home, and our original plan was a brief 6-month stint in Paris Surprisingly, we ended up staying for a decade." Upon lead singer Bobby Boyd's return to the U.S., the group rebranded as Ice and crossed paths with independent producer Pierre Jaubert, a seasoned studio professional with credits on groundbreaking recordings alongside Charles Mingus, John Lee Hooker, and Archie Shepp, among others.

Drawing inspiration from Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated regular rehearsals with Ice. He recalled, "I didn't want to mimic Berry, but with seven talented musicians collaborating daily, something unique emerged " The band, residing in Paris and immersed in the African-dominated Barbesse district, began infusing African elements into their music frequently performing with Paris-dwelling Camaroonian and legendary composer Manu Dibango

Rechristening themselves Lafayette Afro Rock Band, the group's musical direction shifted towards predominantly instrumental compositions, characterized by a weightier, more intricate Afro-funk sound. Their debut recording under this new moniker, 'Soul Makossa,' made a powerful impact with a dynamic rendition of Dibango's classic, coupled with the intense break of 'Hihache' and the contagious 'Nicky ' Initially released by Musidisc in France and later in the U.S. via Editions Makossa, the album omitted the title track due to publishing clearance issues

Despite modest sales upon its initial release, the album's enduring influence became evident as hip-hop culture surged in the '80s, establishing it as a primary source for samples and riffs The iconic 'Hihache' break found fame in Biz Markie's 'Nobody Beats The Biz,' and tracks from the album were lifted by LL Cool J, The Beatnuts, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and numerous others

This remastered reissue, the first of its kind, meticulously crafted by The Carvery from the original tapes, showcases the album in its entirety and includes the full original artwork Pressed on Translucent Blue Vinyl LP

The Foreign Correspondents

Lovin’YouAin’tEasy7”

Sometimes the best music happens when a group of friends get together and discover that they’re mutual fans of the same artist. When that group of friends is Ted Leo on vocals, Brendan Canty from Fugazi on drums, Michael Hampton from Faith/Fake Names on guitar, and Sohrab Habibion from The Obits on bass then you know that the recording is going to be special, and when the inspiration is the early 70’s work of French-Canadian legend Michel Pagliaro then you can be certain that it’s going to be magical.

“Lovin’ You Ain’t Easy” is a power pop masterpiece, the kind of song that you would think was inspired by Big Star had the original not been released a full year before #1 Record. The flip, “We’re Dancin’” from an early Pagliaro side project called Second Helping, is a rocker, with a monstrous riff that is still bouncin’ off the walls of Montreal’s Forum some 50+ years after Pag first unleashed it on a hometown crowd.

Lovin’ You Ain’t Easy is this first 7” in a series of nuggets from the Foreign Correspondents, join them as they travel the world searching for lost classics!

The Foreign Correspondents are:

TED LEO – VOCALS/GUITAR

BRENDAN CANTY (FUGAZI) – DRUMS

MICHAEL HAMPTON (FAITH/FAKE NAMES) – GUITAR

SOHRAB HABIBION (THE OBITS) - BASS

Cold wave duo The KVB are back with news of their new album ‘Tremors’ which is being released on 5 April via Invada Records (Gazelle Twin, Beak, Billy Nomates). This news comes alongside a brand new single and video lifted from the record, ‘Labyrinths’, on which The KVB return to the darker sound that embodied their earliest releases whilst retaining the infectious pop of their last album ‘Unity’ which MOJO described as having a “sense of wonderment throughout”.

The band have dubbed their new album ‘dystopian pop’, and wrote it with the live show in mind; full of energy, hooks and dynamic moments On the album’s subject matter, the band explain that they have “expanded on previous album themes of dystopia, apocalypse and the human condition, but with a more pessimistic outlook and deeper distrust than before. It also touches on themes of loss, and the resistance, lament and acceptance of inevitable change.”

Writing the album between Manchester and Bristol, and recording alongside James Trevascus (Billy Nomates, RVG), the band have drawn on their own back catalogue and the music that inspired them at the very beginning of their artistic journey. The end result is the most complete album from The KVB to date, full of emotive impact and pop hooks presented in a uniquely shadowy atmosphere and with an idiosyncratic detachment that adds to the cinematic quality of their sound.

Formed in 2010, The KVB's music has long reflected Nicholas Wood and Kat Day’s mastery of atmosphere as their sound evolved over the course of the 2010s. Early releases dealt in brittle beats and sonic blasts that evoked Cabaret Voltaire and the Jesus and Mary Chain in equal measure, but the duo's style has gradually become more streamlined and sharpedged on each record since

Vinyl pressed on translucent red vinyl and housed in a delixe spined sleeve with 2 x printed inserts. CD is presented as a digipack.

Mikaela Davis & Circles Around The Sun After Sunrise

SIDE A

1. Gloaming Way (9:40)

2. Moonbow (5:47)

SIDE B

3. After Sunrise (5:30)

4. Language (Live in Boston 012923) (11:50)

After Sunrise, the new collaboration from Circles Around The Sun and Mikaela Davis reunites the disco cosmonauts and acclaimed harpist for further explorations of the synergy first showcased on the title track of CATS’ 2023 album, Language.

Comprised of two new original compositions, ‘Gloaming Way’ and ‘Moonbow’, and an inspired interpretation of Brazilian legend Sérgio Mendes’ ‘After Sunrise,’ the album features the first appearance of vocals on a Circles Around The Sun recording, sung by Davis. A live take on ‘Language’ rounds out the second side and brings the pairing full circle.

Once the endless night of the discotheque finally gives way to morning light, you may find yourself seaside as the sun peeks over the horizon. As the party rolls through the dawn and into the day, this is the soundtrack.

This is After Sunrise. If it’s nice, play it twice.

• LP CUT BY KEVIN GRAY AT COHEARENT AUDIO & PRESSED IN THE USA AT CITIZEN VINYL!

• A WHOPPING SEVEN CD-ONLY BONUS TRACKS!

•BOTH FEATURE EXTENSIVE LINER NOTES AND NEWLY DISCOVERED PHOTOS!

Direct from Sandy’s tape archive, these DIY bedroom demos feature his layered harmonies, harpsichord and guitar - all recorded during his time with the Millennium. Though unreleased and hidden away at the time they were recorded, these demos finally get their due! Includes new liner notes & photos! The CD has 7 bonus tracks!

Sandy seemed to be in the eye of the kaleidoscopic tornado that was swirling and twirling around L.A. … so why didn’t these songs surface all those years ago? It certainly wasn’t for lack of talent, nor was it disinterest. In fact, it was quite the opposite. While in the Millennium, Sandy continued to write and record his own songs. After signing a publishing deal with Four Star Music, his new publisher did place a few of his songs - “Rag Doll Boy,” recorded by Thee Prophets and The Naked Truth; Terry Black recorded a version of “Wishing Star,” and “These Are The Children” and “Goodbye Yesterday” made an appearance on Tommy Roe’s sixth album, Phantasy.

But for all of the songs he composed and recorded on his reel-to-reel tape machine in his small, Sunset Strip apartment, it seemed as if Four Star Music wasn’t truly interested in promoting his songs. But in truth, it was an under-the-table handshake between Curt Boettcher and Four Star Music that squashed all hope of other artists hearing and recording Sandy’s songs.

The songs on this album are a few of many compositions Sandy wrote and recorded between 1966 and 1968. With only one or two exceptions, every instrument, lead vocal and layered harmony is his, and as you will hear, it’s really no wonder that Curt had them hidden away. Taken from the original reel-to-reel tapes, dive into Sandy Salisbury’s sparkling world of sunshine pop.

PSYCHEDELIC ROCK FROM MINNEAPOLIS PSYCH MADMEN JOKERS WILD! INCLUDES ALL OF THEIR RARE SINGLES, PLUS 15 MORE ORIGINALLY UNRELEASED MIND-MELTING CUTS - COMPLETE WITH SLIDE WHISTLE!

WHEN LOOKING THROUGH THE AMOUNT OF OUTTA-THIS-WORLD ACID-TINGED, GARAGE AND PSYCHEDELIC ROCK THAT CAME OUT OF MINNEAPOLIS DURING THE 1960S, IT WOULDN’T BE TOO FAR-FETCHED TO ASSUME THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING IN THE WATER. THEIR SOUND WAS UNLIKE ANY OTHER MINNEAPOLIS ‘60S BAND – A TRUE FEAT DURING THAT TIME.

THOUGH THE BAND BEGAN PLAYING MORE LOCAL GIGS DURING THE EARLY PART OF 1967, IT WASN’T UNTIL MAY THAT THEY RECORDED THEIR SLIDE-FLUTE-FARFISA-ORGAN INFUSED PSYCH WONDERMENT, “ALL I SEE IS YOU / I JUST CAN’T EXPLAIN IT.” THE SINGLE WAS RECORDED AT THE FAMED KAY BANK STUDIOS (WHERE GROUPS LIKE THE TRASHMEN, VAQUEROS, READYMEN, CASTAWAYS AND MANY, MANY MORE LAID DOWN TRACKS) BUT RECEIVED VERY LITTLE AIRPLAY. THEIR SECOND SINGLE FEATURED “ECHO” AS THE A-SIDE, AND IT’S EQUALLY AS FUN, BRINGING A ? AND THE MYSTERIANS-ESQUE FARFISA BEAT BEHIND A DRIVING, DELIGHTFULLY FUZZY BASS AND GUITAR. LIKE THEIR FIRST SINGLE, IT DIDN ’ T GO ANYWHERE. THE LACK OF BUDGET REALLY HURT THE BAND, AND WITH TOO MANY BILLS TO PAY, THEY WEREN ’ T ABLE TO RECOUP ON RECORDING COSTS. POOF… IT ENDED UP SITTING ON THE SHELF.

THE REMNANTS OF THEIR UNFINISHED ALBUM CAN BE HEARD HERE, ALONG WITH UNRELEASED MATERIAL, A COVER OF THE HOLLIES’ “HAVE YOU EVER LOVED SOMEBODY,” AND THREE OF THEIR LIMITED RELEASE SINGLES, “ALL I SEE IS YOU/I JUST CAN’T EXPLAIN IT,” “PEACE MAN/TOMORROW,” AND “BECAUSE I’M FREE/SUNSHINE.” CATCHY YET COMPLEX, TUNE OUT AND TURN ON TO THIS UNSUNG TWIN CITIES GARAGE-PSYCH TREASURE AND PREPARE TO STEP OUTSIDE YOUR MIND.

Fabiana Palladino

STREET DATE: April 5th, 2024 Closer Can

For more or less a brand-new artist, Fabiana Palladino faces an unusual level of anticipation. The London musician broke out in 2017 as one of the Paul Institute’s founding artists after her shadowy, classicist R&B influenced pop reached Jai Paul, who started the label alongside his brother A. K. Paul. Releasing just three singles in four years, she caught the ear of critics – Pitchfork likened “Mystery” to “a scratch track from a big-budget 80s studio that’s been smuggled out on reel-to-reel tape” – but Palladino’s output remained slight while she worked as an in-demand session musician for the likes of SBTRKT and Jessie Ware, and performed with Jai Paul on his comeback single “Do You Love Her Now” and in his live band.

All the while, she was intensively working on her self-titled debut album - Fabiana Palladino - in secret. Made in the wake of the end of a long relationship, it’s an intimate, after-dark record that exudes the toughness and femininity of Janet Jackson circa Control and Annie Lennox on DIVA, exerts the classic songwriting of Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell and subverts the classic romantic Motown duets of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell to unpick normativity in relationships.

The self-titled album feels like a classic pop album: its nimble melodies haunting and sensual, the writing elegantly whittled down to turn complex questions about desire and satisfaction into immediate hooks. “The songwriting is relatively traditional,” says Palladino, “but the production isn’t. It’s trying to disrupt certain expectations.” Palladino’s pop career is finally taking flight but that doesn’t mean the anticipation is over.

In October 2017, ex-Hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian hit the British Isles. These weather systems had formed separately over the Atlantic before moving north-east and converging. In addition to 100mph winds and widespread damage and disruption, the storms brought dust from the Sahara Desert that turned the skies orange over much of the UK. This otherworldly meteorological phenomenon serves as a fitting backdrop to Chimet Chimet charts the progress of the two storms over the course of a week, utilising data from Chichester West Pole Beacon a weather station in the Solent which stands in some of the most treacherous waters in the UK.

The album was created using 2,016 sampled data streams, translating seven days of information into 67 minutes and 12 seconds of detailed and evolving music. With mother nature orchestrating the piece, she is joined by intuitive and powerful improvisations on piano, cello and synthesiser. The recording captures the sense of building expectation and tension, the dropping air pressure, the rising winds, the interlocking storm systems and the serene aftermath. The shifts are seamless, monumental and open to the elements.

Chimet is a record to lose yourself in. Like the sea itself, it doesn’t give up its secrets easily. The listening experience seems to change depending on your state of mind, and resonates on a primal level which belies its data led compositional approach. For generations, artists and musicians have been drawn to the sea for their inspiration. That emotional response to the vastness of the ocean is a powerful force. While the origins of Chimet lie in the numbers, the resultant record sits proudly in that artistic tradition. Music to watch the horizon to.

LA-based band, Cuffed Up will release their debut album, All You Got on April 5, 2024 This long-awaited record comes off the back of nationwide US tours supporting the likes of The Joy Formidable, Silversun Pickups, WAVVES, Militarie Gun and Just Mustard, as well as festival performances at SXSW and Treefort The band has found heavy support at KEXP (including a live session in 2021, Song Of The Day and in rotation), KCRW, KCSN and more, as well as press support at SPIN, Paste, The Line of Best Fit, DIY, Under the Radar and FLOOD Magazine.

Cuffed Up have a knack for distilling big dreams into sound. Their debut album All You Got is filled with dreams of bigger stages, a more open heart and a more equitable society in short, dreams that are swiftly dismissed as naive For this three-piece, “anthemic” is not just an apt descriptor of their sound, it’s an ethos. In every swelling chorus, ardent guitar riff and rich cascade of cymbals is a seed of hope that things will become better

Lyrically, All You Got is an apt encapsulation of the human experience in 2023, couching biting condemnations of tech billionaires (“Small Fry”) and pointed critiques of internet trolls (“Mock Dance”) next to vignettes of lifeaffirming romance (“Finer Things,” “Love Is ”) and fervent pep talks to fellow creatives (“Hello, Dear Passion”) It’s an album for the remaining optimists of the cynical doom scrolling era and for the people who are willing to relentlessly chase their dreams no matter how difficult their lives are made by gatekeepers, politicians, real estate speculators and other modern-day supervillains It’s not defined by a blind ignorance of mounting crises, but rather powered by grueling real-life experiences and the pain-staking reality that the only way out is through.

Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of the Ventures, The Shadows, and with Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the Straitjackets have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 16 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows.

“Don’t get too close to the stage— just close enough to the aisle that you can see just what this music does to people. And then try to sit still during the show. Los Straitjackets is betting you can’t do it, and so am I.”
