NICK LOWE & WILCO

CRUEL TO BE KIND (40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION) AVAILABLE NOW

Nick Lowe’s “Cruel to Be Kind” was first released as a single in 1979 and, thanks to the hook-laden chorus and Lowe’s signature turn of phrase, has never left our ears since. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the power pop gem, this limited edition 45 single of “Cruel to Be Kind” was previously only available for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019. The A-side features the classic single and the B-side contains Nick Lowe & Wilco performing the track together in 2012. The Nick Lowe & Wilco cover of “Cruel to Be Kind” has never been previously available in any physical format. The 45 single arrives on green vinyl and contains a digital download for both songs.

LENNY KAYE & THE FLESHTONES

LOST ON XANDU AVAILABLE NOW

Garage rock connoisseurs may remember the instrumental “Lost on Xandu” from The Fleshtones’ 2011 album Brooklyn Sound Solution for its distinctive guitarwork from the hands of the legendary Lenny Kaye. Eight years later, Lenny went back to the instrumental tune and crafted some lyrics that paint the scenery of an outer space landscape, adding his own vocals to the song and turning the track into something completely new. This reimagined version of “Lost on Xandu” with vocals was previously only available as a limited edition 45 single on cloudy orange vinyl for Record Store Day 2019. The vocal version of “Lost on Xandu” is found on the A-side, and the B-side features a dub-style rendition of the track (starring Peter Zaremba as Space Commander) titled “Lost on Xandu (Version).” Neither the vocal version nor dub version of “Lost on Xandu” have been previously available in any format.

and Nuggets-curator Lenny Kaye gives a rare vocal performance on “Lost on Xandu” on the A-Side, previously only released as an instrumental on The Fleshtones’ 2011 album Brooklyn Sound Solution.

☛ The B-Side is a dub version of “Lost on Xandu,” starring Peter Zaremba of The Fleshtones as Space Commander.

☛ Digital download included with 45 single.

AVAILABLE NOW

“Bang Bang” has remained a curious single in the Squeeze discography, as it was nearly disowned by its songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. Even more curious, however, is renowned wizard (and true star) Todd Rundgren covering it for the fourth installment in the Swindles series. Rundgren takes the song down a electropop wormhole, transforming the tune into something completely unique from the original recording. “Bang Bang” was produced and engineered by Rundgren and Swindles-curator Steve Mandel and was previously only available as a limited edition 45 single for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019.

SPECIAL REQUEST, “Vortex” Houndstooth (2019) “This album comes to us from Houndstooth, and I stumbled upon it because of the sick cover art (the turquoise/magenta color combo is LOUD). It’s from 2019 but has those great old-school 90s House vibes. Grab the 2xLP on color vinyl!” —Peter Hoeller

Låpsley is 23-year-old British singer-songwriter, producer and musician born Holly Fletcher. A classically trained musician, Låpsley started producing her own music on her laptop at the age of 17 which led to the release of her early, critically-acclaimed single “Station.”

Her 2015 debut album Long Way Home, which features her stand out singles “Hurt Me” and “Falling Short,” garnered her widespread praise with places like New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Idolator and Complex describing her as “one of music’s most promising artists.” Her minimal, electronica-informed pop production layered with her soulful vocals set her apart from most and has influenced newer artists like Billie Eilish. For her upcoming album Through Water, Låpsley draws on the last few years of her life – coming into womanhood, falling in and out of love, and the perils of young success – backdropped with her signature production, she’s returned sounding stronger and wiser than ever. SELLING POINTS AND PRESS Stereogum and Complex both described Låpsley as “one of music’s most promising new artists,” meanwhile, Consequence of Sound, The Guardian, FACT, Glamour, I-D, Nylon, Elle, Pigeons and Planes, Paste Magazine, BBC Music, Buzzfeed, KCRW, Spotify, Clash, NPR and more have touted Låpsley for her unique sonic identity, mixing sparse, minimal electronic production with gorgeous, emotive songwriting. “One of music’s most promising new artists.” Stereogum “Låpsley packs a powerful emotional punch with a hypnotic ability that marks her as one of the most promising new artists out there.” - Complex “Låpsley’s garnered acclaim for her ambitious arrangements, and lyrics that go just as far above and beyond the expected.” - The New Yorker “this young singer-songwriter crafts minimalist synth-pop that’s given extra emotional grounding by her rich, lugubrious alto.” - Rolling Stone

CD/LP STREET DATE: MARCH 20, 2020 Produced by longtime collaborator Dan Horne (Circles Around The Sun, Allah-Las), Mapache’s new album, From Liberty Street, captures the Los Angeles duo at their finest, with Sam Blasucci and Clay Finch weaving airtight harmonies around stripped-down, organic arrangements that blur the lines between traditional folk and modern cosmic country. The songs here reckon with longing, desire, and change, and the arrangements draw on everything from Hawaiian-steeped surf and Mexican boleros (Blasucci spent two years living South of the border) to Bakersfield twang and lonesome cowboy campfire tunes, all delivered with the kind of easygoing charm and natural intuition usually reserved for blood brothers or married couples. It’s an instantly engaging chemistry the two share, a captivating musical bond that mirrors the comfort, closeness, and camaraderie of the album’s homespun roots.

“This record is about as close to the sound of home as you can get,” says Blasucci. “We recorded it with a bunch of our friends in the house where we were living in a neighborhood that we loved. The studio was right downstairs, so we had the freedom to try all kinds of new ideas without any pressure or limitations. All the other folks who lived in the house were musicians, too, so it made for this communal atmosphere where everyone was always collaborating and creating together.” The First Edition LP and CD of From Liberty Street includes a free Mapache air freshener in the packaging! Plus, the First Edition LP arrives on limited edition yellow vinyl!

REDEYE inside SCOOP

MAPACHE What are the origins of your band name? We thought names like Los lobos and Los tigres del Norte were cool and we related to raccoons. - Clay Where do you hail from geographically? How has this area impacted or affected your music? We hail from Los Angeles, CA. Growing up here was everything to our music taste. The weather, landscape, Mexican culture and influence, food and architecture have all made their way into the psyche and come out in songs. - Sam How did you start making music? We started playing guitars around middle school as many do because we wanted to rock. - Clay Describe your music to a new fan in five words or less. Raccoons at Ms. Donut. - Sam How would you describe the evolution of your sound up to now? Our music has kept the same core vibe but has been flushed out with some broader influences as we listen to more music and grow as people. - Clay If you had to describe your music without using typical genre classifications, how would you? I would say it sounds like something you forgot that you loved. - Sam What would your “undercover” or alternative band or artist name be if you couldn’t use your current name? THE GLENDALIENS. - Clay What do you do for fun when you’re not making music? We do lots of things. We like to play pool, walk, watch the television, terrorize the neighborhood, eat your dog’s food and take him home. - Sam What was the last piece of music you either bought or consumed? Art Laboe’s oldies but goodies. - Clay What is your go-to destination for food (while touring or otherwise)? At home the go to is quite often a nice trip to Guisados. On the road we don’t miss a single diner breakfast. Eggs, hash browns, toast, coffee. - Sam

“My inspiration most often comes from watching my friends play music. Watching someone I care about feel deeply about a piece of music often inspires me to try to do the same.”

Describe your music as an outrageous new potato chip flavor. Papa ho’one’e ‘ala kai piha - Clay Has there been any one musician or performer who has hugely impacted your playing style, or impacted the development of your music? The Grateful Dead has been a big part of discovering music. - Clay If you could collaborate with any other artist or musician, who would it be and why? I would like to collaborate with Tim Hill because he’s just a great person and such a good friend of mine and that seems like a beautiful time as it always is making music with him. - Sam If you could have a musical career in any other past decade, which would it be? The ’40s! Good style! - Clay Do you prefer working in the studio/recording music, or performing live and touring? I prefer performing live above all. I do enjoy working in the studio but I find it hard to manufacture what happens in a live performance and getting the satisfaction we do when we perform live and in real time. - Sam

Describe your live show: Do you have touring members? Electric or acoustic? Do you have a strict setlist or do you keep it loose? We play just the two of us with three microphones and our guitars. We make a new set list every night and try to learn new songs on the road. - Clay Do you have a favorite song or track of yours to play or perform in a live setting? Or is there one that was particularly fun to record? I always love playing “Lonesome LA Cowboy” because it never doesn’t put a smile on my face. - Sam What is something you wish your fans and followers knew about you? Sam loves ice cream. - Clay Who is one other artist or band you feel should be getting more attention for their work? Tim Hill. - Sam If you weren’t pursuing music full-time, what do you think you’d be doing now instead? Surfing. - Clay Should Pluto be considered a planet? Pluto should be considered a dog. - Sam

Jon Hassell - Vernal Equinox CAT NO: NDEYA2LP (Vinyl) NDEYA2CD (CD) UPC: 5060384617541 (Vinyl) / 5060384617558 (CD) RELEASE DATE: March 20, 2020 Overview:

Hailed as one of the 50 best ambient albums of all time by Pitchfork, Vernal Equinox was the first commercially released work by Jon Hassell, originally put out by Lovely Music in 1977. It is also the debut of a pioneering new form of music that would become known as “fourth world”: a subtle blend of field recordings, electric jazz, ambience and global music influences. Hassell’s trademark FX-soaked trumpet is carefully embellished by a studio ensemble including the master Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos and David Rosenboom on synth. The result is a quiet, meditative and highly original work of outstanding beauty. Fully remastered from the original tapes and available on vinyl for the first time in 42 years, and CD for the first time in 30 years. Sleevenotes by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Back in record stores on the day of the 2020 vernal equinox. “A perfectly realised manifesto” - The Vinyl Factory “Hassell's most elegant melodicism blossoms forth here. Decades after its release, Vernal Equinox still provides an enchanting and entirely contemporary listening experience.” - All Music

Cocteau Twins

Garlands Victorialand March 20th, 2020

Black vinyl represses remastered from the original analog tapes

Garlands Garlands was the Cocteau Twins debut album, released in the early Fall of 1982. It was the only album they made with original bassist Will Heggie. Describing it as “haunting”, “spellbound”, “diaphanous”, and discerning a “frosting of sweetness”, the critics wore out their adjective; this was rock music - just - but it was conjured in the unlikeliest environment from the strangest of material. This is the first vinyl pressing in over ten years.

Victorialand Victorialand, their fourth album, was released in the Spring of 1986. The largely acoustic, non-percussive album was made with Elizabeth and Robin, while Simon was working on This Mortal Coil's second album. Dif Juz label mate Richard Thomas guested on tabla and saxophone. Guardian UK said "It’s not quite ambient, but it’s definitely not rock’n’roll even by the Cocteaus’ standards, building on the moments of guitar shimmer from the previous years’ EPs, while also stripping back at points to where it’s nothing but a Guthrie guitar line and Fraser’s voice."

RUSTIN MAN CLOCKDUST OVERVIEW Rustin Man aka Paul Webb will release a new album – his second in two years – on March 20th. Having waited 17 years for 2019's Drift Code, some may be surprised at Clockdust’s swift arrival, but the album’s roots can be found in the same extended sessions. “Early on I realised I had two albums worth of material,” Webb explains. “The first tunes I wrote were electric guitar based, with long arrangements that built up in layers to something sonically quite dense. These became the bulk of Drift Code. As a reaction, I wrote a batch of songs that were tighter in their structure but had more feeling of space. These make up the bulk of Clockdust.” Idiosyncratic and quietly haunting, Clockdust is seeped in sepia-tinted nostalgia, “a powerful force of nature,” he states, “up there with love and desire”. The album blurs the boundaries between past and present. Webb insists that he prefers to live in the here and now, but in looking back he’s found a magical, mesmerising manner in which to forge a path forward: for him, for his music, and for his audience. TRACKLISTING 1. Carousel Days 2. Gold & Tinsel 3. Jackie’s Room 4. Love Turns Her On 5. Rubicon Song 6. Old Flamingo 7. Kinky Living 8. Night In Evening City 9. Man With A Remedy

n a 1985 interview, Eric Clapton cited Freddy King’s 1961 B side “I Love the Woman” as “the first time I heard that electric lead-guitar style, with the bent notes… [it] started me on my path.” Clapton shared his love of King with fellow British guitar heroes Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Mick Taylor, all of whom were profoundly influenced by King’s sharpened-treble tone and curt melodic hooks on iconic singles such as “The Stumble,” “I’m Tore Down” and “Someday, After Awhile.” Nicknamed “The Texas Cannonball” for his imposing build and incendiary live shows, King had a unique guitar attack. “Steel on steel is an unforgettable sound,” says Derek Trucks, referring to King’s use of metal banjo picks. “But it’s gotta be in the right hands. The way he used it – man, you were going to hear that guitar.” Trucks can still hear King’s huge impact on Clapton. “When I played with Eric,” Trucks said recently, “there were times when he would take solos and I would get that Freddy vibe.” King’s blues style was fluid, but with biting power that was arguably more forceful than that of many other bluesmen of his day. King used thumb and finger picks and would just dig into his Gibson 355 — hung precariously over just his right shoulder — creating what are now classic, deeply influential and riveting solos.

nce described by ROLLING STONE as a “talented Zelig,” Carla Olson has received critical acclaim for her work as a solo performer, band leader (The Textones), and producer. In varying capacities she has worked with former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, Percy Sledge(Sledge has recorded five songs that Olson has written or co-written), Ry Cooder, Gene Clark, Don Henley, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, John Fogerty, Mikael Rickfors, and many others. Her musical partnerships in the 1980s included former Byrd member Gene Clark (which resulted in a duet album, So Rebellious a Lover) and Mick Taylor. In 2013, after not releasing an album of her own since The Ring Of Truth in 2001, Olson recorded Have Harmony, Will Travel, which was an album of cover songs with guest vocalists on each track including Rob Waller, John York, Richie Furay, Juice Newton, James Inveldt, Scott Kempner, Peter Case and Gary Myrick. HAVE HARMONY WILL TRAVEL 2 continues the traditional established on HHWT 1. Guests include the Eagles Timothy B. Schmit, British Invasion Idol Peter Noone, and archival recordings with Percy Sledge and Gene Clark. As with HWWT 1, it is an album of direct, kinetic productions, compelling song choices, and inspired performances. Though there isn't a weak cut in the bunch, there are some soaring highlights including the first single with Peter Noone, Goodbye My Love. Have Harmony, Will Travel 2 is a fitting successor to Volume 1, and a fitting introduction to music fans unfamiliar with Carla Olson.

TRACK LISTING:

“Hypermagic Mountain is Lightning Bolt’s fourth, most well-oiled 1. 2 Morro Morro Land album: song-by-song it chugs into rockier Van Halen, Fucking 2. Captain Caveman 3. Birdy Champs, or Orthrelm territory.” - Pitchfork Hypermagic Mountain, Lightning Bolt’s 4th album has been unavailable for nearly a decade since it’s 2005 release. Back as a double LP including a full drawing by Brian Chippendale as the D side Etching! The package includes a large scale 4-page book (previous pressings included a cd size book). Recorded at Machines with Magnets and Lightning Bolt’s home by Dave Auchenbach. Lightning Bolt play with abandon that is unmatched and remarkably undiluted and this album is just one more example of that raw power and sound. They are often called one of the loudest rock outfits in existence, both on record and on (or famously, off) the stage. Brian Gibson creates sounds that are unexpected and remarkably varied with his virtuosic bass playing and his inventive approach to the instrument, centered around melody rather than rhythm. The dizzying fury of Brian Chippendale’s drums twist from primal patterns into disorienting break beats as his distorted, and echoing vocals weave more melody into the mayhem. “Certain loud guitar rock records serve as brain erasers, a form of shock therapy zapping through aural inputs and (to mix metaphors) cleaning the proverbial clock. Lightning Bolt is one such thing.” -LA Times ALSO AVAILABLE : Lightning Bolt 2xLP (Thrill 498) Sonic Citadel CD/2xLP (Thrill 505) Wonderful Rainbow LP (Thrill 501) Fantasy Empire CD/2xLP (Thrill 380) Ride the Skies LP (Thrill 499)

Let It All In is as instantly arresting as it is deeply reflective, with layers of sound and metaphor to unravel and interpret in their own way. It is a beautiful album that lives in and reflects the present moment while sounding as if it were forged in another era. Invoking nature as a backdrop for exploring humanity’s relationship to time, history, and the present socio-political climate, often highlighting water as a ubiquitous if often unconscious presence in our lives. It acts as a subtle connecting thread through each piece’s imagined landscapes, as well as taking on a symbol for change and spirit. The group has always centered around Heumann’s remarkable voice and songwriting. His skill as a vocalist and guitar player have led to playing with artists such as Cass McCombs, Will Oldham, and many others. Let It All In is an invitation to jump into an album rich with timeless elegance. Their live shows and the otherworldliness of their music have made Arbouretum a cultish band. Their profound music endures and rewards fans both old and new. In just over a year since their initial inception, Eye Flys have established themselves as a force beyond reckoning. Their debut full-length Tub of Lard is stunningly potency full of piss and vinegar, scientific in its ability to pulverize everything in its path. Due in part to the considerable pedigree of the band’s lineup (including members of Full of Hell, Backslider, Triac), the east coast-based quartet chew through steel-barbed riffs and off-kilter rhythms with exponential force. Their 2019 debut EP Context set an early precedent for just how lean and ruthless they can be. On Tub of Lard, Eye Flys launch that potential into 10 songs of maximum impact that find both raw power and subtlety in their simplicity. Written during the summer of 2019, in between U.S. tours with the likes of Daughters and Torche, anxiety, agnosticism, distrust, and psychedelics are all invoked to question reality both personally and globally. The album’s themes are unified by Jake Smith’s search for deeper meaning in the chaos and uncertainty of the world, happy to demolish any opposition along the way.Though the band’s members live spread throughout the east coast, Tub of Lard took shape collaboratively. Smith took on laying down the framework with drummer Patrick Forrest, while guitarist Spencer Hazard added riffs of his own, as well as layers of noise and texture that embellish the band’s penchant for reckless abandon. The gravelly muck-laden basslines by Kevin Bernstein, who also recorded the album at his Developing Nations studio in Baltimore, are handily interwoven beneath the pummel of Patrick Forrest’s drums into buffets that feel almost dizzying. Searing through the ensemble’s taut rhythmic fray is Smith’s bark, deftly riding the line between infuriated sceptic and maniacal punisher. Across Tub of Lard Eye Flys’ merciless sound coalesces through a constant push and pull that leaves every moment thrilling: direct, hypnotic blunt-force grooves that twist and fray into feedback and oblivion. Helen Money, composer Alison Chesley, remains one of the most unique and versatile cellists today, her cello playing effortlessly moving from black metal to expansive ambient strings. She uses the cello to access and channel extremes of human emotion, employing extensive sonic manipulation, plucking and bowing techniques to summon an astonishing breadth and depth of sound. On her new album Atomic, Chesley pushes even further out towards the extremes of her output with daring minimalist arrangements that stand as her most intimate, direct, and emotionally bare work to date. The breadth of ideas explored throughout give Atomic a distinctive ebb and flow; an oblique narrative that conjures distinctive and palpable emotions without being prescriptive. Atomic’s title was inspired by Chesley’s study of the early Roman Humanists, including Lucretius, who proposed the idea that everything is made up of tiny particles and thus interconnected. Written during a period of transition for Chesley and her family she drew immense strength from this idea of interconnectivity. The experience of recalibrating & reorienting herself in the world came to subconsciously inform Atomic’s searching tone, Chesley pushing her music to surprising new places just as she and her family moved into new phases of their lives. Her embracing of minimalist structures reflects her own empathetic shift, collapsing barriers between artist and listener to find power and strength in intimacy. She mused on the implications of interconnectivity for how we should treat each other and our environment. She elaborates: “I’ve been thinking a lot about how the earth is our home; the universe; and how fragile this world is and how connected we all are to everything.“ In an increasingly fragmented world, Atomic presents a map for how we might navigate personal and collective trauma through the pursuit of openness, understanding and introspection. "the best of this set serves as an essential reminder of how, on Merriweather Post Pavilion, Animal Collective successfully folded a decade of experimentation into 11 engrossing pop songs that sounded like little else" PITCHFORK OVERVIEW

Animal Collective proudly announces live album Ballet Slippers, released in honor of the 10year anniversary of their modern classic, Merriweather Post Pavilion. Recorded in the midst of the band’s extensive and acclaimed nine-month tour in ‘09, the album features Merriweather’s greatest hits alongside favorites from Strawberry Jam, Sung Tongs, Feels, and Danse Manatee. The release is culled from several shows from that album’s North American tour and sequenced to reflect a full concert experience, complete with song transitions and interludes, creating a captivating document of the genre-defying group. Reflecting on the decade since Merriweather’s release, Animal Collective had this to say:

“It’s impossible for us to remember the years around Merriweather Post Pavilion without thinking about the live experience. As the record turns 10, there has been a lot of talk about the album itself, but so much of the time living with those songs was spent on stage together. Every night on tour, the music opened up again, leaving us new spaces to fill and new opportunities to rethink our past. Just as Merriweather documents the era in one of its forms, we wanted Ballet Slippers to do the same for some of its other forms.” Animal Collective consists of musicians Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) who play in various configurations on each album. Hence, ‘Collective.’ Their expansive catalog spans the entirety of the 2000s, including Strawberry Jam, Feels, and Sung Tongs. With the release of Merriweather Post Pavilion, named after the Baltimore venue, they established themselves as one of the most acclaimed acts of the 21st century.

RATGRAVE - ROCK CAT NO: BFR005LP (Vinyl) BFR005CD (CD) UPC: 5060384617466 (Vinyl) 5060384617459 (CD) RELEASE DATE: March 20, 2020 Overview:

Max Graef and Julius Conrad are Ratgrave. 'Rock' is their second LP ~ ongoing transmissions of Electronic P-Fusion from Earth.

It follows a stellar debut on Funkineven's imprint Apron. The duo's sound pallette draws inspiration from 80's funk, soul, rock and electronic but through a contemporary lens from two versatile multi-instrumentalists. In their own words: "Rock is the essence of energy and vibration we felt in different styles of music, almost like a parallel component connecting all things we like. In the process of recording the new album we kept coming back to this essence no matter what style the original idea was. There was the raw and brutal energy of Jazz-Rock, a lot of video game influences that somehow adhered this essence just as well as quieter Pop and Psychedelic passages that we recorded. Among other things we absorbed a lot of heavy music during the time of the recording like Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa or Jimi Hendrix and realized while writing our own music how much impact they had even on quieter songs. This is why "Rock“ felt like the perfect title although the music ranges from P-Funk and Spiritual Jazz to various styles of Pop and beyond.“ Max Graef has previously collaborated with Glenn Astro on records for Ninja Tune and both artists have previously released on Tartelet. Afro grooves, electronics and fierce energy Afro futurist sensations Onipa unleash their debut album, combining Afro grooves, electronics and fierce energy for an effervescent celebration of cultural and musical encounters. ONIPA means ‘human’ in Akan, the ancient language of the Ashanti people of Ghana. It’s a message of connection through collaboration: from Ghana to London, our ancestors to our children, Onipa brings energy, groove, electronics, Afro-futurism, dance and fire! Born out of deep collaboration between long-time friends K.O.G (Kweku of Ghana of KOG and the Zongo Brigade) and Tom Excell (MD, guitarist and writer of acclaimed jazz/ soul afrobeat pioneers Nubiyan Twist), the group features KOG on vocals, balafon and percussion, Tom Excell on guitar, percussion and electronics, Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic) on synths and MPC and Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist) on drums. The group have worked closely with Ghanaian star Wiyaala who features on three tracks, singing in the Sisaala language from the North of Ghana. The album also features collaborations with South African rapper Spoek Mathambo, Lesotho star Morena Leraba, Ghanaian percussion master Afla Sackey and Tanzanian sisters Pendo & Leah Zawose, each adding their own flavour to the project. “Through the musical prisms of London and Ghana our influences join together to create, a fundamental thread of traditional African rhythms, instrumentation and storytelling, interwoven with electronics, urban soundscapes and synth bass. We use technology, but it should never use us, our music is live and about deep human connection.” (Onipa)

Release date: 20/03/20 Max de Wardener returns to Village Green with an album of detuned acoustic piano pieces, performed by British jazz pianist Kit Downes (ECM). Drawing inspiration from modernist composers James Tenney, Harry Partch and La Monte Young, de Wardener’s intentions here were “to try and bend something established and monumental into something new”. The resulting album is deceptively simple, belying the project’s myriad technical challenges, (pianos are immensely stubborn when subject to unorthodox tuning methods). Captured over a two year period, Downes’ enlivening improvisations do justice to de Wardener’s vision in creating an elegant record that feels at once familiar, yet otherworldly. LP issued on 180g heavyweight vinyl with a gatefold sleeve CD comes in a deluxe 6 panel digipack Catalogue number: VG063 UPC: 5051083154734

Erratics & Unconformities Faults.

It follows three EPs: Works and Nunroyd Works. Long-form analogue electronic journeys across decades and continents, and swathes of post-industrial northern Britain. The journey on Erratics & Unconformities picks up where left off. We take the canal towpath out of the city. We fork north shortly afterwards. Is this where it started? The terrain gradually becomes more rugged. Familiar. Wild. Evidence of human activity is less immediate in this glacial landscape. It’s there if you seek it. But easy to ignore. If you listen carefully, you can still hear the weight of the ice-sheet carving its way through the rock. Everything in its own time. The output from the old textile mill Craven Faults calls home is no longer as linear as it once was. There was no clear start point for the project, rather simply rediscovering the joy in experimentation with no material goals. Some of the recordings that make up Erratics & Unconformities go back almost seven years. Tracks have come and gone in that time. They don’t leave until they’ve undertaken a stringent quality control process. It started slowly, but has picked up momentum in the last eighteen months. Recorded and re-recorded to the correct level of imperfection, and then left to breathe. Mixed and re-mixed. Carefully compiled when the time was right. The journey is just as important as the destination. cravenfaults.com facebook.com/cravenfaults twitter.com/cravenfaults instagram.com/cravenfaults

Mint Mile

Ambertron

Ambertron (cmo050) is the first full-length album by Mint Mile, a musical concern from Chicago, Illinois. Amber is a preservative. It’s used to hold things in suspension, to keep them still forever so they can be examined and appreciated. It imparts a tint to what it holds. -tron is a suffix indicating an instrument. Art is an ambertron. Bands are ambertrons. Mint Mile is helmed by Tim Midyett, who spent eighteen years in the acclaimed Silkworm, eight more in the critically lauded Bottomless Pit and currently plays bass with SUNN O)))). After three four-song EPs in as many years, Mint Mile piles up the tunes on Ambertron with over an hour of music across this sprawling, dare-we-say epic double LP. From stripped-down twisters to languid drifters to opulent jams alternately joyous, gripped, hopeful and desolate, Ambertron explores the optimistic, rueful space between the personal and global, the emotional and political, and the places (sometimes dark) where memory and reality meet and sometimes disagree with each other. Baritone guitar, pedal steel, rock solid rhythms predominate, with keyboards, strings, horns, and atmosphere woven into the mix as expert spices. The Mint Mile cast includes: Tim Midyett (Silkworm, Bottomless Pit, SUNN O)))) sings and plays mostly baritone guitar. Jeff Panall (Songs: Ohia) is on drums. Justin Brown (Palliard) plays pedal steel, most of the electric guitar, and dobro. Matthew Barnhart (Tre Orsi) handles almost all bass and most of the engineering. Howard Draper (Shearwater, Tre Orsi) does his magic spackling thing. Greg Norman (Bitter Tears) plays the trumpet. Mint Mile were fortunate to be enlivened by a variety of talented guests, from corners of music as varied as Helen Money (Alison Chesley), Poi Dog Pondering (Susan Voelz), modern classical music (Mabel Kwan), and Glen Hansard’s band (Rob Bochnik). Then there’s the all-world vocalist Kelly Hogan, with whom Tim was thrilled to work again, after her contributions to Silkworm’s Italian Platinum so long ago.

Eric Littmann has spent much of the past decade mining his voice as a recording artist with the tools most readily at hand: his command of computational biology (a day job turned life-pursuit) alongside a healthy saturation in the tropes of the 90’s /early aughts college radio charts. Filtering these data through the evolving traditions of home recording, Littmann has shared north of a dozen releases under the monikers Steve Sobs and Phantom Power as well as producing acclaimed records by artists such as Julie Byrne, Yohuna, Emily Yacina, GABI and many others. Littmann’s peak to post-internet collaborative project Phantom Posse has sustained a life across five albums that amounts to some of the producer’s richest statements. 2020’s Forever Underground is the most recent entry in this undulating series, with its title nodding to the project’s unapologetically nostalgic leanings and also quite literally to the homages woven within that reference elusive NYC graffiti artists and their concrete subjects. On subway-tempo’d instrumentals such as “ZNO on Canal”, or “SEBO9 on the Bridge”, a photographic memory is made audible. These documents coupled with the diverse voices featured across the album imply a kind of anthropology that at times mirrors Litmann’s science work, all coursing under the fabric of the producer’s intimate chamber synth melodies.

Trip McCool

“Hang Me Out to Dry”

Artist: Trip McCool Title: Hang Me Out to Dry Label: Thinking Dog Records Cat #: TD2020 Release Date: 03/20/2020 Format: CD Genre: Americana/Celtic distributed by Don Giovanni Records

Close your eyes and you find yourself wandering into an Irish Pub off the beaten path. A band is playing and the sounds are familiar; the well seasoned voice, tin whistle, accordion and fiddle but the songs... have you heard them before? They carry the rocking authenticity of the Pogues and the poetry of the old Irish ballads. It's as though Roddy Doyle is the barkeep for these tunes, spiked with ironic humor that ebbs and flows just as strong porter follows whisky. A laugh and a tear; both valid. You wake to find you have just listened to the latest collection of songs by Trip McCool, "Hang Me Out To Dry". Trip McCool is the Irish alter-ego of Dennis Dougherty. "I put on the guitar and sing as if my ancestors were listening; and I truly believe they are so I better not disappoint them. Trip is the part of my soul that never forgot the sacrifices they made. My people rose up from the Irish mud to make a better life for me. I write songs for them, for my people, the immigrants, the poor, the salt of the earth. It's all true, even the lies.”

Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755

Prolaps is the Brooklyn-based duo of Bordella Biledriver and Metatron Starsore. The first thing they want you to know is that they are NOT a cult. They are sound therapists. Maybe their therapeutic methods fall well outside of convention, but they want to bring you peace of mind. They also want to make it clear that while their bodies might appear similar to those of Kill Alters vocalist / producer Bonnie Baxter and Machine Girl mastermind Matt Stephenson, it definitely isn’t them. The duo’s debut album Pure Mud Volume 7 screeches out of the Hausu Mountain volcano as an unholy hybrid of vocal meltdowns and chopped-and-stitched bursts of noise texture, all planted over bonkers beats that twist their way through untold permutations of electronic dancefloor production. The album reaches a level of intensity in its auditory form alone to match the unhinged chaos of their live sets, which find them dressing in all-white outfits with matching hair (once again, not a cult) and trading off dual vocal lines perturbed enough to make the most grizzled hardcore singer fall into a slack-jawed stare — while perpetrating some foul on-stage activities that, according to some testimony, involve fruits and human orifices. Their music feels like an overstuffed collage of extreme gestures and fragmentary ideas frankensteined together from the worlds of nü metal, jock jams, jungle, acid house, rock rap, and harsh noise. Lead vocal lines in the form of screams, singsong taunts, and martial proclamations clash with the cyborg hooks of finely diced voice fragments. Technoid backbeats keep untz-untz-untz-ing at maximum intensity against a web of rave stabs and melting, pitch-shifted synthesis from machines they credited, in a rare report from their not-a-cult headquarters, under names like the Yamaha DMT100, the UA Theta Pattern Compressor, and the SoulNexus Channeler VST (64bit). Pure Mud Volume 7 maintains a sense of reckless momentum through the continuous flow of the twenty-four tracks in its 50-minute program. The unrelenting pace makes distinctions between each “song” less important than the pure confusion conveyed by the constant juxtaposition of far-flung genres and queasy moods that manifest with the fierce brevity of grindcore and the scrolling eclecticism of a mixtape recording. The album plays out like a conveyor belt of intricately programmed drum patterns and beyond-deconstructed club signifiers that might only appear for a few seconds before being discarded with the rest of the debris. Prolaps’s attention to visual imagery and structural disfiguration brings a darkly cinematic edge to their productions, though it ends up skirting closer to a B-movie drenched in grossout practical effects, or a demented rom-com filmed in the sewer system beneath New York’s streets. As the voices of Biledriver and Starsore burst into the mix, you see them in your mind’s eye as chattering heads floating up in the atrium of an austere DMT temple flooded with rainbow sludge and bodily fluids. With demonic grins covered in smeared makeup, the duo reminds us that this is a party and we’re all supposed to be having fun. And it’s true: for all of their cheekily confrontational tendencies, their scatological lyrics and static noise aggression, Prolaps never lose sight of the absurd glee at the heart of their music.

LITTLE DRAGON NEW ME SAME US Release Date: March 27, 2020 Little Dragon — the pioneering Swedish four-piece fronted by enigmatic vocalist Yukimi Nagano, with multi-instrumentalists Håkan Wirenstarnd and Fredrik Wallin on keyboards and bass respectively and Erik Bodin on drums and percussion — return with their sixth studio album, New Me, Same Us this spring, their first album release since signing with Ninja Tune. New Me, Same Us is the sound of a band going back to basics and falling back in love with their instruments: drums, bass, keyboards, harp, guitar and voice, to produce some of their most focussed and inarguably best music to date. “This album has been the most collaborative for us yet.” they explain, “which might sound weird considering we’ve been making music together for all these years, but we worked hard at being honest, finding the courage to let go of our egos and be pieces of something bigger.” New Me, Same Us represents another chapter in the continuing evolution of Little Dragon, finding new direction in their unique style of unhurried, off-kilter r’n’b, pop and electronics, they sound as rejuvenated and energised as ever. The record also finds them in a reflective mood, Yukimi’s distinctive vocals musing on transitions, longing, and saying goodbye. “We are all on our own personal journeys,” they say, “full of change, yet still we stand united with stories we believe in, that make us who we are.” CAT NO: ZEN263 UPC: 5054429140491 Box Lot: 20

VINYL Lilly Hiatt felt lost. She’d just returned home from the better part of a year on tour in support of her acclaimed third album, Trinity Lane, and, stripped of the daily rituals and direction of life on the road, she found herself alone with her thoughts for the first time in what felt like ages. So Hiatt did what’s always come most natural to her in times of questioning and uncertainty: she picked up a guitar. Over the course of the ensuing winter, she wrote a mountain of new music that grappled with her sense of self and place in the world, reckoning with issues that had been bubbling beneath the surface of her subconscious in some cases for years. The result is Walking Proof, Hiatt’s fourth and most probing collection to date. Produced by former Cage the Elephant guitarist Lincoln Parish, the record walks the line between Hiatt’s rough, rock and roll exterior and her tender, country roots, exuding a bold vulnerability as she takes a deep and unflinching look in the mirror. What emerges is a newfound maturity in Hiatt’s writing, an abiding sense of calm in the face of chaos as she learns that sometimes, you have to let go in order to get what you want most. By the time she headed into Parish’s Nashville studio in May, Hiatt had piled up more than twenty-five new songs, and with the producer’s help, she pared it down to a tight and cohesive eleven. After capturing the core performances live with her band over the course of roughly a week, Hiatt devoted the early part of the summer to finishing touches, which included contributions from friends like Amanda Shires and Aaron Lee Tasjan along with a guest appearance from her father, legendary songwriter John Hiatt, who joins his daughter on record for the first time here.

“...the Greatest Trio on Earth” –New York Times Magazine “a ceaseless fever dream” –Pitchfork “The Necks exist in a nebulous, spectral realm at the crossroads between free improv, jazz and a deconstructed form of rock’n’roll that is most remarkable because, like their neighbours (of hundreds of miles away in New Zealand) The Dead C, they do so in a way that is instantly identifiable and constantly questing for new ideas.” –The Quietus

Three, the 21st album from legendary Australian instrumental trio The Necks,

is a winding, textural, and visceral musical exploration through three individual, contrasting tracks that each delve into separate tenets of their sound. Three’s variety of tones and structures offer a glimpse into the boundless, immersive sonic universe The Necks have been constructing, through recorded and live performance, for over 30 years. From its very first moments, “Bloom” rattles and propels listeners through a dense, mesmerizing soundscape of unceasing intensity. Directly juxtaposing the consuming rattle of the opener, “Lovelock,” dedicated to the memory of Damien Lovelock, former frontman of The Celibate Rifles, is a weightless and atmospheric threnody that ruminates in the quiet and overwhelming moments of grief. The final setting of Three is one of warmth and familiarity. “Further,” is a confident, seductive groove in a quintuple meter, reminiscent of the groups’ work on records like Sex (1989) and Aquatic (1994). Contrasting the style of their celebrated improvisational live act, the group’s studio work is meticulously sculpted from beginning to end. On Three, Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (bass), Tony Buck (drums/percussion), and their long-time backend collaborators Tim Whitten (engineer) and Doung Henderson (master) have again scrupulously built music that focuses on the most intricate edges of staggeringly immense, diverse worlds. From strained to still to smoky, each piece of Three marks itself as distinct and its own, but all feel representative of Australia’s greatest cult band, The Necks.

The No Ones , a bi-continental collaboration featuring Scott McCaughey, Frode Strømstad, Peter Buck and Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen, is a band that stretches from the southwest of Norway through Athens, Georgia to the northwest corner of the USA, consisting of members from I Was A King, The Minus 5, The Baseball Project and R.E.M. As this pedigree almost dictates, they wield Fender and Rickenbacker guitars, cutting, chiming and fuzzing their way through songs dealing with abduction, interstellar mysteries, witchcraft, and more mundane fare like climate change, gentrification, and the desolation of the soul. The vocal harmonies and psychedelic flourishes fuse the sunny turbulent sounds of the ‘60s with the darkness and decay of today.

Whereas Glimmer, produced by Hugh Padgham, had a pop sheen to its sound, A Long Way Back… strips everything down to a more raw essence. Produced by Doug Lancio, who also plays most of the instruments, A Long Way Back… allowed Kim to reinterpret these songs and give them a fresh yet timeless sound. Other musicians on the album include Nielsen Hubbard and Dan Mitchell. Kim says, “All of the original 14 songs from this new album were recorded in producer Doug Lancio’s basement studio and given a more intimate treatment. It was great to revisit these old friends and be able to make them available again to fans.” Kim Richey is launching the Glimmer 20th Anniversary Tour in April, where she will perform the album, Glimmer, in its entirety plus old favorites.

A Grammy® winning icon of American music, Jim Lauderdale has always covered a wide range across the Americana spectrum, from rocked-up country to high lonesome bluegrass. In a very literal sense, he’s returning to his geographic as well as musical roots on his 33rd album, “When Carolina Comes Home Again,” out March 6 on Yep Roc Records. The 13 tracks on “When Carolina Comes Home Again” are straight-up bluegrass, going back to the earliest music Lauderdale learned to play. The music is also rooted geographically, in Lauderdale’s home state of North Carolina – where he was born in Statesville and grew up in Troutman and Charlotte before attending the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. Lauderdale had had it in mind to do an album paying tribute to his native state for a number of years and right now turned out to be the perfect time, given how much North Carolina has been in the national spotlight of late. The Old North State was the subject of the Oxford American’s annual Southern music issue in November 2018 with pieces on Earl Scruggs, Alice Gerrard, Rhiannon Giddens and other North Carolina musical icons past and present. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper subsequently declared 2019 as North Carolina’s “Year of Music,” with an ongoing state arts council called “Come Hear North Carolina.” A good way to hear North Carolina is with the very dramatic “When Carolina Comes Home Again” title track, which Lauderdale co-wrote with John Oates – yes, that John Oates, Daryl Hall’s partner in the hugely popular blue-eyed soulpop duo. Oates seems like a surprising co-writer for an uptempo, ominous-toned bluegrass song, but it’s less of a stretch than you’d think. Lauderdale co-wrote other songs on “When Carolina Comes Again” with Songs From the Road Band bassist Charles R. Humphrey III and Steep Canyon Rangers banjo player Graham Sharp, both North Carolina-based. Songwriting partners from farther afield included the late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter (one of Lauderdale’s frequent collaborators over the years) as well as the songwriter/activist Si Kahn – who co-wrote “Cackalackey,” a raucous fiddle tune that declares North Carolina “always means home sweet home to me.” “North Carolina has such a long and important heritage in bluegrass music,” Lauderdale says. “Since it’s where I’m originally from and where I started playing bluegrass, it seemed right to go back to my roots in bluegrass there and collaborate with musicians in that area. There’s just something in the atmosphere there. Hearing bluegrass in different areas and settings in North Carolina, the music is just there in the air. The first bluegrass festival I ever went to was Union Grove when I was 14 and it blewue my mind. The music got into my bones and I just had to get a banjo.”

“As a spectacle, it’s eccentric and quite brilliant – much like the man himself” ★★★★ — The Independent Nils Frahm announces the release of Encores 3 on 20 September 2019, the third and final instalment of his Encores series. The three EPs will be available as one full length release titled All Encores featuring 80 minutes of music on 18 October, to follow his masterful 2018 album All Melody. Whilst Encores 1 focused on an acoustic pallet of sounds with solo piano and harmonium at the core, and Encores 2 explored more ambient landscapes, now Encores 3 sees Nils expand on the percussive and electronic elements in his work. “The idea behind All Encores is one we had from before All Melody; to separate releases each with their own distinct musical style and theme, perhaps even as a triple album. But All Melody became larger than itself and took over any initial concepts. I think the idea of All Encores is like musical islands that compliment All Melody.” Moulded during All Melody but refined by his live performances, All Encores is testament to Nils’ exceptional ability to craft his art on stage. Artificially Intelligent which showcases his ‘mad professor’ organ, and All Armed which has been a live favourite for some time, appearing on set lists since 2015, are now available to hear on record for the very first time. The final track of Encores 3, as well as the whole series, Amirador, perhaps aptly nods to the Spanish word for ‘lookout’ and hints at what’s to come. Frahm has been touring extensively following the release of All Melody, bringing his spectacular live show all around the world with sold out performances including the Hammersmith Apollo in London, L.A.’s Disney Hall, Brooklyn Steel, Le Trianon in Paris and Funkhaus in Berlin. Nils returns to the UK capitol for The Hydra’s summer 2019 series, headlining Printworks on August 23, with further European dates following the release of Encores 3 and All Encores. For all dates and tickets: https://www.nilsfrahm.com/concerts Praise for Encores 1 and 2: “Where All Melody was elegantly dense, Encores 1 is soft and spare, four solo piano compositions and one for harmonium, all of which mostly dance through Frahm's particular balance of pastoral optimism, countered always with a shaded melancholy — like closing your eyes and looking right at the daylight” — NPR "Frahm remains a musical sorcerer supreme" — Mixmag

Orion Sun has been quickly making a name for herself in her current hometown of Philly (originally from New Jersey) and beyond. She's opened for buzzy Alt-R&B/Hip-Hop acts such as Noname, Ibeyi and Sudan Archives and was highlighted by NPR as a 2019 Artist To Watch. Her story, that of an early 20s woman of color dealing with and learning about life's obstacles and celebrations, is understood best through her song lyrics; citing J Dilla, Nancy Wilson, Jodeci, Kirk Franklin, Hazel Scott and Digable Planets as just some of her many influences. She's a career artist with a long road ahead and her sound defies trends; capitalizing on a velvety and familiar voice with timeless jazz / folk / R&B instrumentals.

Still, with all of the stellar instrumentation, the 23-year-old’s voice cuts through as poignant as ever. - Refinery 29 on ”Ne Me Quitte Pas”

SONGS:

Keith Godchaux’s only been with the band a month but already he is fitting in like a glove. This fall 1971 show captures the Dead dancing down their improvisational high wire like only they can. On one side of the precipice are the free form jams of their earlier incarnations. On the other are the country-inflected tunes of American Beauty and Workingman’s Dead, both released the preceding year. And no sequence captures the tension between the two quite like the first set’s “Dark Star”/”El Paso” sequence, during which the band improbably (and seamlessly) veers from their spaciest song to their most cowboy cover and back again. A true marvel of a medley. Then, speaking of cowboy, the second set goes full-on boots ‘n’ spurs (the show is in Austin, after all) for its first half-dozen songs, winding up with a barn burning “Cumberland Blues.” And then another sublime medley of “Not Fade Away” segueing into a “Jam” that toys with the “China Cat Sunflower” theme, followed by a rip-roarin’ “Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad” and back to “Not Fade Away.” Blair Jackson’s liner notes chart the course. HDCD sound mastered by Jeffrey Norman, too…never before available in stores!

PARIS HILTON:

PARIS (Limited Maroon & Blonde Marbled Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: MARCH 27, 2020

Not everybody has not one, not two, but twelve producers attached to her debut release. Not everybody has her one and only album pranked by British artist Banksy (who substituted a topless photo for the cover). Nope, not everybody is Paris Hilton, who has lived in the public eye since, well, forever. She first announced plans to make an album in 2003, during her run on the reality TV series The Simple Life. Originally entitled Screwed, and then Paris Is Burning, the record—finally simply entitled Paris— came out in 2006. And it was…uh…good? Yeah, for real. This record goes expensively pedicured cuticle to cuticle with anything Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson or any other pop culture chanteuse of the like ever put out, and the Paris the heiress displays some real savvy both in her taste of material and the Madonnalike manipulation of her sex symbol image. And her voice? Definitely respectable despite what the haters said. Indeed, the single “Stars Are Blind” went top 20, and the album itself went all the way up to #6, selling over 600,000 copies worldwide. For the first-ever vinyl release of Paris, we at Real Gone Music have taken the fetching photos from the CD package and given them plenty of acreage to show their stuff, with a newly-created gatefold jacket and 4-color printed inner sleeve. And our limited-edition run of maroon and blonde marbled vinyl goes smashingly with the album art. In short: a pop culture keepsake from a pop culture icon!

• Veléz Entitled Fiends and Angels in Honor of the Session Musicians, Who, to Paraphrase Her, Were Fiends When Playing Music and Angels When Not

Talk about an album that shoulda/ coulda/woulda been a hit…1969’s Fiends and Angels paired the powerful pipes of American singer Martha Veléz with the crème de la crème of the British bluesrock scene. And when we say “the cream” we mean it literally: Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton are both on this record! Not to mention Brian Auger, Johnny Almond, Jim Capaldi, Paul Kossoff, Christine McVie, Mitch Mitchell, Stan Webb, Chris Wood…the mind boggles. All were assembled by producer Mike Vernon, upon whose Blue Horizon label Fiends and Angels came out in Britain, while it was released Stateside on the Sire label. Which may explain why the album didn’t become a bigger hit; at this early point in its existence Sire was a small imprint basically dedicated to importing the best of British blues and progressive rock, several years away from its Ramones/Talking Heads heyday. So perhaps the marketing resources weren’t there…how else to explain how Fiends and Angels (so named by Veléz in honor of her backing musicians, who, to paraphrase her words, were fiends when playing and angels when not) didn’t make a bigger splash, especially when you consider that her voice rivaled Janis Joplin’s in its range and power. We at Real Gone Music are thrilled to present the first American vinyl reissue (and the first LP reissue in nearly 50 years) of this blues-rock cult classic, with its original Sire gatefold album jacket art housing a limited pressing of 700 copies in purple vinyl. It was indeed a miracle that this San hiatus of about five years with their line-up album on the Kama Sutra label had scored the first hit to emerge from the Bay Area psychedelic scene with “Hello, Hello,” its release. And those familiar with the group only from its Lovin’ Spoonful-esque hit (Sopwith Camel not only shared a label but also producer Eric Jacobsen with the Spoonful) might well have concluded that they had indeed gone to the moon (or somewhere else celestial) in the interim, for the 1973 Reprise release The Miraculous Hump Returns from the Moon was, ahem, light years ahead of its predecessor with respect to concept, scope, and musical sophistication. Here was a record that, as a 2014 appreciation in The Guardian put it, “sounds like it was recorded about a week ago...Taking in elements of FM schmaltz, prog-rock, jazz, showtunes, Krautrock and Indian classical music, this is an album that overflows with ideas, but never overwhelms.” To that point, parts of this remind us of Tame Impala or even Stereolab with a self-referential, ironic edge that lends some tang to the album’s perfumed exoticism; those looking for more contemporaneous comparisons might reference early Supertramp or Steely Dan. HIGHLIGHTS

Flares was the debut album from Genoa post-rock quintet port-royal. The album was initially released in 2005 by the quality-minded UK indie label Resonant Recordings. Flares has become a watermark of the more contemporary amalgam of ambient, electronica and post-rock. And, is considered a classic of the genre. Spintink Music stylistically name-dropped Eno and Explosions in the Sky when describing Flares. Tiny Mix Tapes commented that Flares "reveal(s) moments of undeniable brilliance." and Exclaim! remarked, "this music is both inherently simple while being intricately complex and deserves to be placed in your stereo." "Intoxicating," "rewarding," and "masterpiece" are just some of the adjectives used to describe Flares upon its release. To commemorate the album's 15th anniversary, port-royal have teamed up with their current partner of ten years, the Oakland based n5MD, to bring you Flares on vinyl for the first time. Remastered and remixed explicitly for vinyl from the original stems. Flares 15th-anniversary edition will be out March 27th on double 180-gram transparent blue vinyl.

Across 13 keenly observed and beautifully orchestrated songs, Julian Cope’s new album heaves with unrest and the spirit of 2020. Pure Cope: compelling earworms of barbarian intelligence. Crammed with songs that reach deep inside you, each possessed of its own micro-worldview, SELF CIVIL WAR showcases Cope’s songwriting at its most searching since JEHOVAHKILL. Road-testing the zeitgeist with kitchen sink psycho-dramas like ‘A Dope on Drugs’, ‘Your Facebook, My Laptop’ and ‘Billy’, the album also showcases the insightful Heroic Ballads ‘Einstein’ ‘You Will Be Mist’ and ‘The Great Raven’. In typical Cope stylee, the 13 songs brim with sound FX, enormous orchestral arrangements, timeless uprisings of Ur-folk and hefty nearKrautrock anthems. It’s the first release in Cope’s ‘Our Troubled Times’ series, and a fine temporary refuge from our daily bombardment by media luvvies and fuckhead world leaders who take us all for idiots. Celebrate the arrival of this new decade with Julian Cope’s rampant new album SELF CIVIL WAR.

Taking influence from home recording, beat tape production and psychedelic West Coast soul combined with intimate, homespun songwriting and experimental instrumental arrangements; UK born, LA based Somni is set to release new album ‘Home’ via Friends of Friends Music on 27th March 2020. The album features an array of instrumentation, from the common: acoustic guitar, upright and electric bass, drums, synths; to the more exotic: kalimba, melodica, zither, toy piano, and accordion, alongside field recordings and cassette tape manipulation. Both in narrative and in wordless harmony, Leo’s vocals across the record are pitched and manipulated adding a further layer of otherworldliness. Inspired into songwriting by artists like Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse and Cat Power in his early teens; inspiration from the LA beat scene, notably Low End Theory, and artists like Amon Tobin, Portishead, J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Shlohmo brought together a fitting collision of these two worlds in his own music.

(UNCUT 8/10 "A staggering debut of depth and substance", ★★★★ The Guardian). This new album was recorded in Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. An album of pastoral themes and curious love songs, underpinned by the unique violin playing of Emma Smith (Seamus Fogarty, James Yorkston, Noel Gallagher, Jarvis Cocker). Glaswegian psychedelic heavyweights Helicon follow their 2017 self-titled debut and a recent three-track ‘Zero Fucks’ EP. A 9-track effort, it sees the band delve even deeper into their self-confessed “evil psych rock with smatterings of sentient sitar” - coming out of the other end with something more raw and heavy, and far closer to the all-consuming live show that they’ve spent the last decade frying minds with. As angry and acerbic as ever, vocalist and guitarist John-Paul Hughes says of the themes explored on the album: “We are living in unprecedented times. This age of greed, individualism, fear, ignorance and manipulation of the masses has brought us to the point we are electing predatory liars and con men who bully and discriminate, then wear it as a badge of honour..” So, how do Helicon go about sticking a finger to the mediocre? Through a shape-shifting blast of transcendental sitar, oscillating synths, motorik basslines, echo-soaked vocals and huge walls of guitar thick with phaser and fuzz, cranked all the way up to 11 1 Sound Of Confession 2 Pure Filth 3 The Sun Also Rises 4 Glasgow Uni Accent 5 In The End 6 Bardo Thodol 7 With Graceful Menace 8 What You Love Will Kill You 9 Cosmic John

A vinyl album & a CD album both called Eurotopia. Europe has dominated the discourse of UK political life over the last four years. The songs on these two albums, written in Europe between January 2015 & July 2019, located between places like Porlock, Paris, Prague, Lemnos, provide an alternative perspective to those years. On Eurotopia love songs, both tender & cheery, rub shoulders with hidden histories & contemporary tragic ballads, in settings ranging from folk & post-punk rock to chanson & jazz. The vinyl version has 9 songs, where Robb’s voice & guitar are accompanied by the vocals of singer Fae Simon. The 13 songs on the CD version are recorded with the band The Irregulars. Whether it’s the direct pared-down performances of the vinyl version or the collective magic created by the musicians on the CD, these are surely some of the finest, most assured recordings Robb has produced to date. Only 4 songs appear on both CD and LP but in suitably different versions. If you were to wonder why Robb is releasing 2 different albums with the same name in different formats he would probably reply “because with Irregular Records we do whatever we like, & at Irregular Records we like art that doesn’t merely aspire to conformity.” Robb Johnson is now widely recognised as one of the finest songwriters working in the UK today. “An English original” The Guardian UK LP Track listing: Side one 1 The Carnival Song 2 Welcome to the Museum 3 My Last Night in Montmartre 4 The Centre of Everything.
