Redeye Label of the Month: DON GIOVANNI
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
Most of the artists I work with are playing in one of the music scenes or communities we work with. I’ve always approached running the label much more like a documentarian rather than a curator so it’s always been less about my personal taste as much as it is about what’s going on.
Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?
I’ve always been much more interested as a listener and a label owner in what is being expressed rather than how it is being expressed.
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
I don’t have any tattoos but I imagine this would be like asking someone to pick their favorite.
What is your stance on color vinyl?
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
I’m still trying to figure out if I’m actually in the music industry or not, but about five or six years after the label began I started to have a goal of getting our releases distributed and known nationally.
When and where did the label begin?
New Brunswick, NJ even though I was living in Boston at the time, in 2003 or 2004 depending on how accurate you want to be.
What is the meaning behind the name for the label?
It comes from the movie Dirty Work but doesn’t really have any meaning behind it other than liking the way it sounded. If I knew I would still be doing the label all these years later I probably would have tried to think of something even dumber.
How has the label changed since it started?
The goals of providing a viable alternative to a corporately controlled music industry that can level the playing field and allow artists to be relevant nationally on their own terms, and putting artists and art first really hasn’t changed much since starting the label.
Describe the general makeup of your team at the label. I’m still handling almost everything myself the same way I did when I started but I’ve been really fortunate to be able to pay friends to help with things from time to time. Right now Mike Campbell handles press for us, and Jon Herroon fulfills our mail-order, he also runs his own label called Fire Hazard Records which I encourage you to check out.
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
All of it.
Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
I’ve always been very community focused and so when the label started for our first ten years or so we only worked with bands in New Brunswick, NJ and the surrounding area. The internet and especially web 2.0 forced me to re-think what the community we were serving was a bit and so now it’s a little less region focused and the label has grown to serve a couple of different communities.
I abhor it and think it’s for children. Small children. I get that grown ups are into it but grown ups will also buy legos and go to disneyland without children.
Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??
I’ve never really understood the cassette thing but CDs are the main format I listen to so we’ve always tried to make them for the same reason we made vinyl when no one understood why.
How would you describe the average fan of the label? I wouldn’t
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
It is so important it should be mandated and regulated and it’s depressing that it’s not, at least within the independent community. What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
When I started Major Labels would illegally collude with Best Buy and WalMart to drive independent labels and local retail out of business. Today, large tech companies collude with each other and Major Labels to drive independent labels and local retail out of business.

Never been super concerned about that kind of thing and more concerned with relevance while the label is active so I appreciate you giving me the chance to talk about it!

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart's 2009 self-titled debut album was truly an out-of-nowhere smash, garnering widespread acclaim from the likes of The New York Times ("sensitive and sublime, Best of 2009), Pitchfork (Best New Music, Best of 2009) and NME ("pure indiepop to hold close to your heart," Best of 2009) to countless indiepop forums and blogs, and landing the band a dedicated following that endures to this day.

What began as an act of immediacy has turned into a full-fledged band, with the addition of members Nate Newton (Converge, Cave In), Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra) and Luka Scarola (Luddite Antiques). Structurally: short, damaging sonic barbs, stylistically similar to Isis’s dirge, yet unafraid to explore their more stoner rock leanings, intercut with ambient compositions, noise tracks and bizarre sonic manipulations, to form a fractured yet engrossing whole.
A suffocating melange of various sound textures fused and soldered together by five ambitious musicians - with the help of alt-metal producer/guru Kurt Ballou . Colossal heaviness, aural battery and euphoric, dawn-breaking beauty collide in this jaw-dropping epic from primal post-metal visionaries/ experimentalists, Old Man Gloom . Whereas the simultaneouslyreleased Seminar II is a brilliantly fragmented collection of snapshots and stills from the Gloom landscape, Seminar III: Zozobra is the onetake panoramic whole, a seamless 27-minute sweep through an everchanging vista.
Easing slowly off the trail with deliberate, suspenseful chords, Zozobra isn’t exactly in a rush to get anywhere but, right from the off, expectation looms large. And sure enough, those Gloom guitars –heavy but open, metallic yet organic – soon join forces with the rest of the OMG Institute, morphing into a multi-layered post-metal symphony that absolutely SOARS off the canyon’s edge…
…until, that is, it nosedives into the thick of a raging shitstorm. Jarring, siren-like guitar lines and masochistic one-chord pounding are the disorder of the day for a turbulent ten minutes. Strut present the first international reissues of two classics of South African jazz by Malombo Jazz Makers, ‘Malompo Jazz’ (1966) and ‘Malombo Jazz Makers Vol. 2’ (1967).
Formed in Mamelodi township near Pretoria, the group started out as Malombo Jazz Men with Julian Bahula on malombo drums, Abbey Cindi on flute and Philip Tabane on guitar Fusing traditional and improvised rhythms with jazz, Malombo became renowned as one of the first South African bands to fully connect jazz with the African traditions
Despite his undoubted genius, Tabane became erratic on tour and Bahula brought in another Mamelodi-based talent, guitarist Lucas “Lucky” Ranku, renaming the band Malombo Jazz Makers The group played stadiums and festivals and were soon signed to Gallo Recording at a studio in Pretoria, the trio debuted with the album ‘Malompo Jazz’ in 1966, showcasing the simple, spacious beauty of the Malombo sound and Abbey Cindi’s compositions, with Mahotella Queens’ Hilda Tloubatla on guest vocals
The partner follow-up album ‘Malombo Jazz Makers Vol 2’ was recorded a year later, continuing the earthy flow of Malombo’s music

The roots of JuJu started in San Francisco after Plunky had met his musical mentor, Zulu musician Ndikho Xaba, helping to form his band Ndikho and The Natives Three members of The Natives (Plunky, bassist Ken Shabala and vibes / flute player Lon Moshe) then joined Marvin X’s theatrical production The Resurrection Of The Dead, joining local musicians Al-Hammel Rasul (keyboards), Babatunde Lea (percussion) and Jalango Ngoma (timbales)
When the production ended, the six musicians formed Juju. “We had high-energy rehearsals that lasted for hours and, as a band, we became powerful and began gigging around the Bay Area,” remembers Plunky Although orientated towards Black Nationalism, the band fed off the Bay Area’s culturally diverse communities as Plunky shaped an inclusive worldview based on collective political, social and artistic activities. During this time, the Soledad Brothers case and Angela Davis were prominent and the band supported Professor Davis and the cause. Juju’s music matched the fire of their activism. “As a band, we blew, pounded and stroked our instruments like there was no tomorrow, like our life’s work was wrapped up in each session We approached our performances like religious rites and the music mesmerised, informed and awakened people.” The band’s first album, a Message from Mozambique, was intentionally political While the anti-war movement focused on Vietnam, Juju looked towards wars being waged in South Africa, Angola and Mozambique over issues of white supremacy and control of natural resources A second album, ‘Chapter Two: Nia’ would follow before the birth of Oneness Of Juju during the mid-‘70s This definitive reissue is fully remastered by The Carvery from the original tapes and features original artwork and a new interview with Juju bandleader James “Plunky” Branch

Founded in 2018 by Lauri Kadalipp, the New Wind Jazz Orchestra aims to amplify Estonian music internationally through new collaborations. Artistry is at the heart of the orchestra's mission and so Randalu's distinguished repu tation (he has worked with the likes of David Liebman, Nils -Petter Molvær, and Dhafer Youssef) and smart repertoire were a perfect match for the jazz orchestra.
This nine- track record combines brand new, large ensemble arrangements of original compositions by Randalu, as well as reworkings of established pieces from the Estonian canon. There are no traditional 'swing big band' sounds here; rather, the album features a myriad tapestry of intriguing, pulse - oriented arrangements.

The time is now for Caroline Rose. Their last record, Superstar, was released on March 6, 2020. The record was critically acclaimed and positioned Rose as the next big breakthrough in music. Needless to say, the resulting pandemic grinded all momentum to a halt while at the same time throwing Rose’s personal life into turmoil. The result of that turmoil is the fuel that fired the creation of their latest album, The Art of Forgetting.
With The Art of Forgetting, Rose took on the dual role of writer and producer. The album encapsulates the feeling of experiencing recent memories, having them turn into old ones and then ultimately forgetting those memories altogether. There is a romantic nature within the sonic landscape of this record. Tape effects and loops emulate the feeling of aging while the juxtaposition of modern acoustic-electronic textures, like lo-fi tape next to hi-fi granular synths result in some of their most mature and honest work to date.

Liturgy is the project of Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, whose yearning, energetic “transcendental black metal” exists in the space between metal, art music and sacred ritual. Its current lineup features Mario Miron (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass) and Leo Didkovsky (drums). Celebrated for their fusion of sincere emotion, compositional complexity, stylistic innovation and intense live energy, the band is simultaneously a medium and platform for drama and theology. It was founded in the context of Brooklyn DIY as a solo project by Hunt-Hendrix in 2005 while she was studying philosophy and classical composition at Columbia. After expanding to a quartet they made waves globally with their 2011 sophomore album Aesthethica for introducing the style of Scandinavian black metal into the world of experimental art rock. Their ambitious 2015 album The Ark Work was controversial for its incorporation of IDM and trap production into their musical language. Further honeying Future Me Hates Me’s dark lyrics that explore complex topics like being newly alone and the self-defeating anticipation of impending regret, ecstatic vocal harmonies bubble up like in the greatest pop and R+B of the ‘60s, while inverting the trope of the “sad dude singer accompanied by a homogenous girl-sound.”
All four members of The Beths studied jazz at university, resulting in a toolkit of deft instrumental chops and tricked-out arrangements that operate on a level rarely found in guitar-pop. Beths guitarist and studio guru Jonathan Pearce (whose other acts as producer include recent Captured Tracks signing Wax Chattels) brings it all home with an approach that’s equal parts seasoned perfectionist and D.I.Y.
“There’s a lot of sad sincerity in the lyrics,” she continues, “that relies on the music having a light heart and sense of humor to keep it from being too earnest.” Channeling their stew of personal-canon heroes while drawing inspiration from contemporaries like Alvvays and Courtney Barnett, The Beths serve up deeply emotional lyrics packaged within heavenly sounds that delight in probing the limits of the pop form. “That’s another New Zealand thing,” Stokes concludes with a laugh. “We’re putting our hearts on our sleeves—and then apologizing for it.” The result is nothing less than one of the standout records of 2018.

The Cinematic Orchestra mark the 20 year anniversary of their celebrated album, Every Day with a limited 3LP translucent red vinyl reissue replete with bonus tracks ‘Oregon’ and ‘Horizon (feat. Niara Scarlett)’ as well as two tracks previously unreleased on vinyl in ‘Semblance’ and the unearthed ‘Flite (Original Version)’. The Cinematic Orchestra, formed by Jason Swinscoe and later joined by long-time friend and collaborator Dominic Smith, are one of the UK’s most respected and influential British artists of the last twenty years, creating genre-defying compositions that introduced jazz to a new breed of electronic music fans. Upon its original release in 2002, Every Day was praised for it’s sweeping and dramatic turns through classic soul, jazz, minimalism, electronics buoyed by the guesting calibre of Art Ensemble of Chicago’s Fontella Bass (writer and performer of ‘60s soul masterpiece “Rescue Me”) and indelible UK music legend, Roots Manuva. Jenny Conlee, the multi-instrumentalist best known for her 23-year tenure as a member of indie icons The Decemberists, is stepping once more to center stage this year with the release of Tides: Pieces for Accordion and Piano. The humble yet deeply emotional album of instrumentals finds Conlee pulling from her vast well of influences and knowledge to work in a more neo-classical mode.
One half of the LP is made up of a suite of accordion pieces written using the seven Greek modes, centuries’ old musical scales that are each named for a specific place in Greece. “The idea of composing using the Greek modes has been in the back of my mind for a long time,” Conlee says. “These modes may have a sad, unsettling, or dissonant sound to modern ears, and I wanted to experiment with them.” Written during a week-long artist’s retreat on the coast of Washington State, Conlee found inspiration within the natural environment she was surrounded by: the ocean, sand, dune grass, wind, and a hawk she spotted hunting along the beach. The finished compositions are like an oil portrait of a seaside scene — multi-colored, richly textured, and able to draw on sense memories buried deep within the mind and body.
Conlee pairs that suite with a series of piano pieces that she has been slowly writing over the past three years. These five instrumentals are built from a foundation of ostinatos, repeated musical phrases heard in the bassline of each track. Though these delicate and sometimes playful works came about organically, when Conlee had finished the writing she realized the debt she owed to Children’s Songs, a 1984 album by the late jazz artist Chick Corea. “I have always loved listening to and playing Children’s Songs,” she says. “I realized how much they influenced my writing and I need to acknowledge it and give credit where it is due.” Conlee also points to the work of another pianist, Bill Evans, for his inspiration on “Shore Pine,” a somber and moving piece written during the recording of Tides that closes the album with “a different feel and had more of a sense of resolve,” she says.
Combined, the two sides of Tides are new angles through which to view Conlee’s dynamic musical mind and unstoppable talent.

Conscious to hold space within her music for people to live inside, Chua thought often of YIAN’ssound in terms of sonic spacing. The hushed, flickering tones of AutumnLeaves Don’t Come and swelling strings of instrumental Grief Piece sound completely intimate, like she’s singing into your ear, yet capacious, like soft cocoons of sound. “For me, the music is like a home.”Cultivating a Chinese dance practice is as much part of the story of YIAN as the music itself. Chua returned to dance after struggling with the conservative constraints of ballet as a child, finding intuition and affirmation in the fluidity and naturalism of Chinese classical, fan & ribbon and contemporary. Dance is entwined in the very texture of YIAN, with Chua undertaking deep study of Chinese dance forms whilst working on the album–the Echo music video, Chua’s take on a choreographed pop MV, is a moving and innovative homage to Chinese fan dance, martial arts, and the elements. Visually, the video is also inspired by the cult movies Chua grew up with (think Lady Snowblood, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, Kill Bill, The Grudge and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), whose hyper-stylised female Asian characters were some of the only on-screen representations available to Chua in her formative teenage years.YIAN is as much an unpacking of Chua’s identity as a reinvention of it, a new way of seeing, pieced together through the practise of her artistic craft. “It’s like what I do with the cello, a classical instrument with so many historic undertones –running it through the pedals, changing its voice, playing it standing up, hacking with the meaning and symbolism of it. The Dave Douglas and Elan Mehler Sextet mixes seasoned veterans with relative newcomers, setting poetry and specifically haiku into the context of improvising music. On If There Are Mountains , their first album as co-leaders, the trumpeter and pianist are joined by vocalist Dominique Eade , reedist John Gunther , bassist Simón Willson , and drummer Dayeon Seok If There Are Mountains , previously released only to vinyl on Mehler's label Newvelle Records, now sees a fresh release via Douglas' own label Greenleaf Music. Douglas and Mehler composed all thirteen tracks between themselves, including four never-before-heard songs: Douglas' "Arms Folded to the Moon", "A Thicket of Summer Grass", and "Life" plus Mehler's "Barn's Burnt Down". While the spark for Douglas and Mehler's collaboration around haiku goes back two decades to an early performance of Douglas' "Village of No Bells", this vocal-forward ensemble sounds undeniably fresh. The group presents unusual melodic relationships with concise expression, matching the form of the Japanese poetry found within the lyrics.

It’s 2023, and even the turn of century seems a long time ago now but oddly, Purling Hiss’s guitar-band ethos feels ever more timeless, even as time accelerates and passes us in the outside lane. The Hiss aren’t just a simple part of the tradition going back 50-odd years. Their DNA, pulsing in waves of punk and classic radio rock, grunge and slacker, is ineffably, re-singably music but their signature crushed guitar harmonics, fused with deep soulfulness, meld into something that cuts us with fresh heartbreak, an eternal recurrence that seems to be happening right now today, as it pours off the turntable and runs down the street.
Drag On Girard, the first Purling Hiss album in six years, cruises through these states of mind and places in time dreams from the past and the future, careening lawlessly as they slide around loose on the road, an ever-present youth in their roll. As before, but with new twists, Mike Polizze and his gang let loose with the chaos and noise implied by their name, applying high-end splatter and slow-rolling low end to eight vehicles, running the gamut from gleaming pop gems to head-cleaning epic jams before they’re done.
The Polizze -on- Polizze prototype for Purling Hiss roiling, space-eating layers of guitars draped atop the muted thump of freedom rock, all of it squeezing through the spectrum in a mad dash to be heard was established way back in the Hissteria/Public Service Announcement days of the early teens. Now in a fourth album iteration of full-band Hiss , the genius of Mike Polizze’s music, beyond the obvious his singing/screaming guitar leads, classic song construction and vivid hope-and-dream feels is the shifting layers of Hiss that make up the dynamic personalities of each album, from the major-label alternative rock sheen of Water On Mars
to the slip-siding chaos of
owy 1980s club depths of High Bias . This time out, the colliding circles of time seem to have inspired both the songs and the band, and the sentiment-drenched mood explodes in a wild tangle of guitars that seem constantly about to overwhelm the room.
One of the unique qualities of Drag On Girard is a specific lead-rhythm arrangement of the guitars, emitting the expected formidable roar while setting a certain type of rhythmic strut for the band. The two guitars style also trips power-pop impulses in the tunes, with sung-along harmony vocals that evoke classic collective magic and burnish the tunes one by one. Once this vibe’s established, side two turns around and stretches out with the molten flow of Purling Hiss at their very most epic; couched within loose improvisatory structures, the title track and “Shining Gilded Boulevard” play further with the yin/yang of nostalgia and truth as they trade places looking meditatively back to them old days and all their harshness and beauty. In some ways, 'Hellworld' feels like a direct relation to a lot of early 2000s Planet Mu releases. It could sit neatly alongside Hellfish or Neil Landstrumm, with a similar anything-goes, gleeful attitude, but instead DJ Girl mashes together a driving sound that is founded upon Detroit techno and electro, Chicago juke and Miami bass, with an old school/new school production style that's finessed with distortion and sparse IDM production. It's a midwest USA style that takes a leaf from DJs and producers such as the wild-style hard techno of Lenny Dee, the tough midwest acid of Woody McBride and the system wrecking electro of Dynamix II, with a joyful, take-no-prisoners bounce.
'Hellworld' kicks off with the industrial juke of 'Get Down', followed by the powerful electro of 'Opp Pack Hittin' (the first of two tracks to feature MC Malik McFly).
'Technician' is a chirpy old school electro track that gets crazier as it progresses, while 'Lucky' mashes together samples and rough beats like an electro version of breakcore. 'Gallery' again features Malick McFly and switches between footwork beats, pumping techno and electro. 'So Hot' is hard 8-bar electro while 'When U Touch Me featuring Irish producer Lighght feels like a very manic take on hyperpop. The album ends with the tough, spiralling acid of 'Groover' which wouldn't be out of place on a late nineties Jeff Mills mix. The fun is infectious on this one.

Windscale marks the return of Graham Richardson's ambient post-rock project Last Days. His sixth full-length album continues Last Days' characteristic narrative style by focusing on the UK's most significant nuclear disaster in 1957, at the Windscale nuclear facility in North West England. By track titles and mood, each work soundtracks pivotal moments in the troubled reactor's timeline. From the early promises of free energy to the core's fire and the resulting aftermath, the album plays as a cautionary tale that mirrors concerns of the modern day. Through this narrative, Richardson aurally experiments in ways that amplify the retro-futurist nature of nuclear energy while displaying a melancholic empathy for those that experienced the accident firsthand.

Denver producer and visual artist John T. Hastings aka RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz for his second album on the label, “Arcadian Daze”. The album is a contemplative drive down a nostalgic highway, reflecting on a period of his late adolescence growing up in Ohio, spending time at Arcadia Beach on Lake Erie and discovering the likes DJ Shadow, Madlib, Fila Brazilla, early Four Tet, the original Ninja Tune roster and more. Revisiting these coming of age memories, John purchased an older MPC 2000XL and set out to musically capture the excitement of putting his first nascent loops together, ins pired by this pivotal era of electronic music that has since birthed movements like such as Lo-Fi/Chillhop, Vaporwave, LA’s mid-2000s Beat Scene / Low End Theory, etc.
The end result of “Arcadian Daze” is indeed filled with that nostalgic spirit paying homage to those aforementioned sounds, but also presents a forward thinking musical palate that ’s very much grounded in RUMTUM’s sensibilities as a p roducer and time spent learning to program new & vintage outboard gear The album moves away from the warm, dreamy sounds of last year ’s “Isles in Indigo” LP, and touches more into a mystical, pensive vibe with elements of darkness and light.

This project was seeded in Detroit, USA, in 2018 when MdCL (Nubya Garcia, Bugz In The Attic, Ge-Ology), was invited to perform alongside Detroit native Zach Saginaw aka Shigeto (Andrés, Dabrye, Shlohmo) at local spot, MotorCity Wine despite the two having never actually met. Months later, the Italian Fat Fat Fat Festival invited them to open their 2019 programme, yet the duo felt a piece of the puzzle was missing. Enter the “triple threat”, Melanie Charles. Having first connected post-show at a festival in Brooklyn in Oct 2018 MdCL knew Charles was the perfect fit
In light of Pharoah Sanders passing, there's reinterpretations of The Creator Has a Master Plan (Part's 1 & 2) and Love is Everywhere reimagining them for the here and now Strings speaks to the group’s love of hip-hop, whilst Kanazawa references a love of soulful house, with Charles’ 70s disco/fusion flute solo, leading into a euphoric, climactic outro Bushido leans even heavier on 70s jazz fusion, MFT showcases Charles’ sublime vocals, affording a vast, celestial quality that stands present throughout Hotel San Claudio.

Death Pill, are an all-female hardcore punk power trio of considerable muscle, combining metalcore, punk rock and oodles of ‘Riot Grrl’ vibe. Full on and fully formed on their self -titled debut album.
That aside, what makes this release even more pertinent for us, and the fact that it is happening at all, is that Mariana, Anastasiya and Nataliya are from the Ukraine, who ’s troubles are well known to all of course, but naturally enough have hit the band very hard.
The musicianship and commitment on display is undeniable, plus the tracks on the album have been totally remastered for this release, sounding as fat and full as a raging whirlwind. Although things are uncertain, the band are still strong and still together.
