Stuart Staples was already nurturing seeds for a different kind of Tindersticks album before lockdown halted their tour in early 2020. If 2019’s “No Treasure but Hope” saw the band rediscovering themselves as a unit, the follow-up reconfigures that unit so that everything familiar about Tindersticks sounds fresh again. “Distractions” is an album of subtle realignments and connections from a restless, intuitive band: rich in texture and atmosphere, it lives between its open spaces and details, always finding new ways to connect with a song. If it’s an album that resists easy summation, at least one thing is clear: though it isn’t untouched by the lockdown, “Distractions” is not ‘a lockdown album’. As Staples says, “I think the confinement provided an opportunity for something that was already happening. It is definitely a part of the album, but not a reaction to it.” SELLING POINTS • • •
It’s a brand new, full-length Tindersticks album Limited edition colored vinyl available! The album includes cover songs by Television Personalities, Neil Young and Dory Previn

exas bluesman Lightnin’ Hopkins career was both long and fruitful. He performed live for six decades and recorded for over 30 years amassing a catalogue that was larger than almost any of his contemporaries. Not only was he prolific but he was also a great raconteur and a very good live performer with an ‘act’ honed to perfection at pre-war dances and parties. His guitar playing was unconventional, some have even called it ragged, but it is not as a guitarist that he will be remembered. Somehow the way he set his songs seemed totally apposite and it gave everything he did an authenticity that few others were ever able to match.

PHILIP B. PRICE
OCEANS HIDING IN OCEANS On February 19, 2021, Philip B. Price (frontman and songwriter for acclaimed chamber-pop band Winterpills) will release a new solo album, Oceans Hiding In Oceans. Price’s 2019 solo album Bone Almanac was described by PopMatters as “another masterclass in songwriting and performance.” and “enveloping and poetic” by Paste Magazine. Written and recorded at home during the pandemic, Oceans Hiding In Oceans is a kaleidoscope of moods, shapes and sounds from Price’s own personal bunker. “I won’t lie, it was a rough time.” Price writes from within the labyrinth of a mind in near pandemic midbreakdown, and yet the music veers dizzily from optimistic and meticulously crafted Magnetic Fields-like electro-pop (“This is the Last Time”), to the Dolly Parton-esque (“Loneliness”), to the Lennon-like (“Little Bell”), to swirling angry Slowdive-style shoegaze (“Forever Vines”). He played every instrument. “I don’t think I’ve ever made a more ‘indoorsy’ album, so to speak. It was freeing, in a way, to just live inside my computer inside my little studio inside my little house inside my little head and find my way to whatever musical ocean crashes around inside me, which is of course inside yet another ocean - I guess this is a quantum physics album, without knowing much about quantum physics.”

TRACK LISTING 1. 4th of july 2. i believe in you
dirt is the latest EP from Hand Habits, the songwriting project of Meg Duffy.
Artist: Hand Habits Title: dirt Catalog #: LBJ-323 Formats: 7” Street Date: February 19, 2021 Box Lot Quantity: 84 Genre: Alternative
Comprised of two songs, “4th of july,” a simmering swell of chaos and beauty and “i believe in you,” a favorite of Duffy’s from the Neil Young cannon, the EP finds the songwriter exploring themes of growth and finding ways to let go of the parts of their past that no longer serve them. After cutting their teeth in the upstate New York d.i.y. music scene and several years of session and touring guitar work for Kevin Morby, and a long list of other artists, Duffy released their debut album Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void), a home-recorded, self-produced work that announced the project as a full-time affair. While their follow-up album placeholder saw them working with producer Brad Cook at Justin Vernon’s April Base Studios and garnering praise from such outlets as NPR which called the work “their most fully realized statement” and the Los Angeles Times which praised the work as a “virtually seamless country rock album, with verses moving fluidly into choruses that travel unimpeded across sparkling, architecturally sophisticated bridges.” dirt showcases an artist returning to the fertile creative ground of their home. However, this time around home-recording didn’t necessarily mean working in isolation. Duffy had relocated to a shared living situation in Los Angeles with musicians Sasami Ashworh and Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), which also housed Thomas’ studio. The resulting songs showcase this creatively collaborative environment, with Ashworh co-producing the title track and Thomas co-producing “i believe in you.” Such is the strength of this relationship, in fact, that this new single just may serve as a bridge toward a greater body of work the three will ultimately create together. The resulting EP illuminates the songwriter’s attempts to evolve beyond the confines of their past. As they put it, “ ‘4th of july’ feels like trying again, rolling around in the wreckage of the past and finding new ways out of the maze of memory.” The sonic texture of the song complements this lyrical journey, with a simple and sparse introduction marked by a slow burn crescendo hinting at the rupture to come, followed by an ecstatic wail of transcendent emotion. Fittingly, it concludes with a reprise of the beginning but this time altered by new sounds, suggesting a new perspective. Similarly, Duffy breathes new life into the Young staple, adding a foreboding weight and impact to the long-familiar words.

For Duffy, the process of recording and the song’s themes of growth through trust dovetailed perfectly. As they note, “There's a foundation, and when there's a foundation there's opportunity to reimagine structures; physical and otherwise.” 505 ENO ST. Som du är…Var jag en gång…Som jag är – Kommer du aldrig att bli
A new tasty aznd sizzling Swedish meat-BALL. By special request we now present an unexpected all Swedish language special version of the latest Ball album. Also including a previously unreleased track + a completely new cover and packing. The band is joined here by the infamous madman Allan Belsebub who handles the vocals duties. His participation in this project sets the album in a new seedy light as the songs receive a distinctly different character. We experience the album from a uniquely Swedish perspective. Maybe kicking back from a rad skate session and now zonking out on glue vapors in a back alley. Released as an eye-popping picture disc in only 500 copies worldwide so get with it fast. – Wasted slimy Swedish heavy psych speed freak power trio. Drugged and toxic. This is hard rock from hell. “…this is what black metal would sound like if it was from Detroit ’68.” --Jus Oborn (Electric Wizard) Parental advisory. X-rated content. Buy at your own risk!

using psychedelic pop and the deep grooves of dance music, Psymon Spine’s music oozes with melodic hugeness—but the places this Brooklyn electronic pop outfit takes their songs is truly out there, exploring complicated feelings through a singular approach to left-of-center dance sounds. Only a year ago, band members Noah and Sabine were playing in the dream-pop group Barrie, who broke out following a string of buzz-making singles, but Charismatic Megafauna proves that Psymon Spine are on a different journey, exploring sounds ranging from disco to early techno and motorik’s incessant pulse. Psymon Spine put their own addictive stamp on the sounds of the past, with surprises at every turn and the type of lush synth work that could only come from brilliant students of dance music. Reflecting optimism and catharsis, Charismatic Megafauna is a heady trip through left-field pop that packs its own emotional wallop.

Meanjin/Brisbane alt-country/indie-folk-five-piece Full Power Happy Hour deliver an enchanting collection of great depth and beauty based around the beguiling songs and bewitching vocals of singer-songwriter Alex Campbell. The band’s unique aesthetic mixes the intimacy and fragility of ‘60s folk singers like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez with the ramshackle bonhomie of The Pogues, tempered by a more modern indie-rock sensibility akin to The Clean, with results that are purely and defiantly Full Power Happy Hour.

Hodge Remixes In Blue
Release date: 02/19/2021 Anz, Surgeon, Shanti Celeste, AYA, Kush Jones, and Facta & K-Lone remix Hodge’s ’Shadows In Blue’ album in rolling and swanging UK rave styles. Surgeon follows the mode of his superb ‘Europa Code’ 12” with plush harmonic developments in his supple but bristling take on the title track, and Anz supplies another highlight with her Shed-like brickbat twist on ‘Lanes.’ AYA also impresses with a stringently minimalist but playful tweak of ‘Ghost Of Akina’ recalling Autonomic D&B explorations, and the only non-UK artist on board, Kush Jones flips ‘The World Is New Again’ into a needlepoint footwork joint with breathless ambient pads. Shanti Celeste plays it straightest with a percolated take on ‘Lanacut’, and KLone & Facta screw ‘Sense Inversion’ with proper UK swing beats. Highlights: • This is Hodge’s first release since his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Shadows In Blue’ from April of 2020. • Features six remixes from cutting edge producers ranging from Surgeon, Anz, Facta & K-Lone, Shanti Celeste, AYA and Kush Jones. • Hodge (Jacob Martin) helped shape Bristol's post-dubstep scene • His track ‘About Sunlight On A Broken Column’ for IDDK was a commercial sync success • 75 of 800 limited BLUE vinyl exclusive to Redeye.

Written, performed and produced by Michael Peter Olsen, Yearning Flow marks the arrival of a new musical space for Olsen’s compositions, production and perspective on the cello as a vibrant modern instrument. Evocative and visual, Yearning Flow is a sonically deep album that layers ambient textures with tension and release. The six compositions are bound by a swirl of sounds, heavily altered worlds that are connected with Olsen’s subtle playing and sound design. An interpretive platform for listeners and collaborators alike, it speaks of a career built upon diverse musical contributions and a deep emotional bond to a life in art. Michael Peter Olsen is a classically trained cellist, an experienced international touring musician, film composer, record producer and GRAMMY NOMINATED songwriter. He has collaborated on classic albums from Drake, Arcade Fire, Haim, The Hidden Cameras, Jim Guthrie, and K-OS to name a few, appearing on over 100 recordings. He applied his studio expertise on many levels, producing and engineering albums for Ohbijou and Spiral Beach (Moonking & Doldrums) along the way. As a composer Michael has also scored music for network TV, short films and fronts the band Our Founders. With Yearning Flow, Olsen welcomed award winning film composer Todor Kobakov, experimental dance music artist Strange Robotix, bassist Brandon Lim (HSY,Yamataka Sonic Titan), and singer-songwriter Merival to collaborate on the project. Their contributions come together to form a unified whole sound under Olsen’s production.

33 1/3 years after its first release Piranha Records reissues the groundbreaking Stella Chiweshe international debut Ambuya! („Grandmother“) on quality 180g vinyl, 102% remastered from analog tapes, together with a bonus John Peel session from 1988. From the beginning Stella had to stand up against white suprematists, missionaries and male hegomany in her motherland Zimbabwe to play the Mbira. When she went on to spread the message of the Mbira internationally, she crossed even more borders. With her album Ambuya? the Mbira finally went electric and combined the spiritual with the popular in a creative exchange with British world indie legend 3 Mustaphas 3. 3 Mustaphas 3 mastermind Hijaz Mustapha, who produced the album, remembers: 1987. The call came from Berlin: Mustaphas, meet your Ambuya. At that time the young 3 Mustaphas 3 were playing many stages and many songs, mixing, matching, mutating. We had the protection of the innocent, and the confidence of everything that we didn’t know. Stella was gracious enough to invite us to her cosmos. This was her international recording debut, the premier production of Piranha Records and perhaps my first production job where I had actually dared to take a named production credit. They seemed to trust me. I tried to approach it in a serious way. In retrospect, this was a bold request, and a first for all of us. I don’t know how many voice-mbira-dzavadzimu-marimba-hosho-electric-bass-and-drums albums had been recorded up to that point, but it was certainly the first one that any of us had tried. The good thing about doing these first leaps into new air is that no-one can say ‘that’s not how you do it’. OK, so let’s get ready. For many, now, there is digital access to collaborative global episodes; on-line, sure sure, and bravo to the new creative frontiers and side ears. For us - trying to meet in those days - this was a real-time, analogue sonic sensory adventure, all parties willing to see what kind of soundwork would come out, if we went in with the right attitude. No YouTube references, no digital access to recorded time in all directions; just the classic ‘Rolling!’ and off we roll, and the recording tape catches the excited electrical particles onto its welcoming matrix. The classic voice of the producer in the headphones ‘Fantastic! Do it again!’ Most regular recording sessions love the clean, and focus on the enemy: buzzing. What’s that buzz? Where’s that buzz? Great take, damn, there’s a buzz. Oh man. Can we find that buzz? Enter Stella, queen buzz-bringer. Buzzes of mbiras, marimbas, ancestral voices singing and responding through the resonators and bottle-cap zzzzzzz-harmonic enhancers. Ancestor amplifiers. We need the buzz-aesthetic. Audacious to try, lovely to be asked, honoured to participate, proud that it is with you again in a new millenium. Buzzes straight to your hearts. Much respect now - as then - to Stella, Virginia, Leonard, Samson, Sabah Habas and Houzam. Time spins like an album, our mbira-meetstapha kick-off of 1987 still lives and rotates with Piranha Records in 2021. Ambuya? Ambuya!

Farmer Dave & the Wizards Of The West FDWOW LP Catalog#: CURED003 UPC: 0850014131036
Farmer Dave Scher of Beachwood Sparks, All Night Radio, Kurt Vile, & Skiffle Players releases his first LP for 10 years & with a new band. Some musicians leave elusive, magical trails you can only see from space. Some musicians have a ghostly eminence on too many of your favourite records to call it coincidence. Some musicians play pedal steel like Weldon Myrick in a psychedelic church at the bottom of the ocean. Some musicians can write a song to heal the sick, give succour to the lost and the lonely…Only Farmer Dave does them all. His magical, song-craft, multi-instrumental trail has crossed paths with Beechwood Sparks, Will Oldham, Kurt Vile, The Skiffle Players, Chris Robinson, Elvis Costello, Interpol, Jenny Lewis, Animal Collective and as one half of All Night Radio some would say one of the greatest albums of all time.He also makes Farmer Dave’s Roasted Hot Nuts.To us, from afar, he sits like a gentle, industrious Buddha, floating above a West Coast scene where music and love still rise from the soil and surf. If we sound biased, it’s because we adore him. And it is our joy to present his latest collection as Farmer Dave & The Wizards Of The West.In parts raw, psychedelic, UK sonic guitar meets the spiritual jazz of Sun Ra. Pharoah Sanders by way of MBV. In other parts, a minty fresh LA Noir from the fertile bones of classic LA rock - The Doors, Janes Addiction. Farmer Dave’s music is the actual song of the Siren. Tie yourself to the mast and drift west with he. Sometimes, things just seem to happen for a reason. This rings strikingly true for the solo career of Julien Baker. For years, Baker performed in bands, but when college took her four hours away, her need to continue creating found an outlet through solo work. The intent was never to make these songs her main focus, yet the process proved to be startlingly cathartic. As each song came into shape, it TRACKLIST: 1. Blacktop 2. Sprained Ankle 3. CLOUD NOTHINGS THE SHADOW I REMEMBER
CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com
For a band that resists repeating itself, picking up lessons from a decade prior is the strange route Cloud Nothings took to create their most fully-realized album. Their new record, The Shadow I Remember, marks eleven years of touring, a return to early songwriting practices, and revisiting the studio where they first recorded together. In a way not previously captured, this album expertly combines the group’s pummeling, aggressive approach with singersongwriter Dylan Baldi’s extraordinary talent for perfect pop. To document this newly realized maturity, the group returned to producer Steve Albini and his Electrical Audio studios in Chicago, where the band famously destroyed its initial reputation as a bedroom solo project with the release of 2012 album Attack on Memory. Another throwback was Baldi’s return to constant songwriting à la the early solo days, which led to the nearly 30 demos that became the 11 songs on The Shadow I Remember. Instead of sticking to a tried-but-true formula, his songwriting stretched out while digging deeper into his melodic talents. “I felt like I was locked in a character,” Baldi says of becoming a reliable supplier of heavy, hook-filled rock songs. “I felt like I was playing a role and not myself. I really didn’t like that role.” More frequent writing led to the freedom in form heard on The Shadow I Remember. What he can’t do alone is get loud and play noisily, which is exactly what happened when the entire band — bassist TJ Duke, guitarist Chris Brown, and drummer Jayson Gerycz—convened.

The band had more fun in the studio than they’ve had in years, playing in their signature, pulverizing way, while also trying new things. The absurdly catchy “Nothing Without You” includes a first for the band: Macie Stewart of Ohmme contributes guest vocals. Elsewhere, celebrated electronic composer Brett Naucke adds subtle synthesizer parts. The songs are kept trim, mostly around the three-minute mark, while being gleefully overstuffed. Almost every musical part turns into at least two parts, with guitar and drums opening up and the bass switching gears. “That’s the goal — I want the three-minute song to be an epic,” Baldi says. “That’s the short version of the longass jam.” Lyrically, Baldi delivers an aching exploration of tortured existence, punishing self-doubt, and the familiar pangs of oppressive mystery. “Am I Something” Baldi screams on the song of the same name. “Does anybody living out there really need me?” It’s a heartbreaking admission of existential confusion, delivered hoarsely, with an instantly relatable melody. “Is this the end/ of the life I’ve known?” he asks on lead single and album opener “Oslo.” “Am I older now/ or am I just another age?” Despite the questioning lyrics, the band plays with more assurance and joy than ever before. The Shadow I Remember announces Cloud Nothings’ second decade and it sounds like a new beginning. PRESS QUOTES / PRAISE FOR MARIGOLD This is undoubtedly Pinegrove’s best record yet… The band, and Hall, manage to retain their contemplative and overtly confessional style, and deliver something intensely moving and beautifully constructed. – Line of Best Fit What is clear is that the album adds to Pinegrove’s growing status as one of the most talented recording and touring bands in the land. – Under The Radar

Founded by childhood friends Evan Stephens Hall and Zack Levine, Pinegrove have already crafted three fantastic albums - Everything So Far (2015), Cardinal (2016), and Skylight (2018) – and have achieved massive critical acclaim, and a widespread and devoted listenership. The band’s latest album (and first for Rough Trade) Marigold, arrived in January of 2020, and its themes of reflection and resilience have resonated through an especially tumultuous year. Now with tours canceled and time on their hands, the band have decided to put together something special for their fans. Amperland, NY is yet another full album, this time accompanying a feature film of the same name. The collection features 21 brand new studio recordings spanning Pinegrove’s career & catalog, captured upstate in the house where the band lived and recorded for 4 years – a place they lovingly referred to as “Amperland”. But all good things (and leases) come to an end, and before they bid adieu to the space permanently, they gathered together for one last performance with friends and family. Featuring original member and keyboardist/vocalist Nandi Rose (Half Waif) on many tracks – this collection will thrill old and new listeners alike – with the band breathing new life into fan favorites and deep cuts. From acoustic versions to unique arrangements featuring piano, pedal steel and organ, Amperland, NY touches on notes of folk and progressive rock previously unheard on their studio albums. This will be an essential addition to the Pinegrove catalog and encompasses all of the earnest and ecstatic live energy the band is known for. The beautiful double album will be housed in a heavyweight matte gatefold package and comes with a fully annotated script and behind the scenes photos from the film.

JARVIS COCKER Februaru 26th, 2021
Jarvis Cocker’s first two solo records THE JARVIS COCKER RECORD and FURTHER COMPLICATIONS will be made available on standard black vinyl on February 26th. This is the first standard release of The Jarvis Cocker Record on vinyl in the US, and Further Complications has been out of print for some time and has been remastered.
THE JARVIS COCKER RECORD This was Jarvis Cocker’s debut solo album, and was originally released in 2006. It was three years in the gestation and 13 days in the making. Along the way he roped in Richard Hawley and Steve Mackey (ex-Pulp) to be in his band.
Jarvis is a both a thoughtful and thought-provoking record, shot through with lavish beauty, dark humour, satire - both subtle and savage - and a genuine and much-missed sense of Northern conviction. The songs seem to exist on a sometimes-delicately-balanced-sometimes- swinging scale between sentiment and cold-eyed analysis, each distinguished by the unmistakeable (and never better) voice of our lanky protagonist. *Includes 7” of “Cunts Are Still Running The World”

FURTHER COMPLICATIONS Further Complications is Jarvis’ second solo album and was produced by Steve Albini after the pair met at Pitchfork music festival. Albini’s touch is noticeable on some of the rockier numbers and has delivered some brilliant fuzz and driving beats. Jarvis himself has given a performance to make us all proud, running the vocal gamut from roaring garage rock, to sleazy funk all spiced with his trademark story telling theatrics. This is an album built to last and certainly withstands repeat listening. You’ll slowly find the memorable wisdom of this national treasure emerging amongst his ‘profoundly shallow’ lyrics about carrier bags and Hondas running out of petrol, making it an essential listen for anyone who likes their music witty and intelligent. Smerz are the Nowegian duo of Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg. Known for the “carefully shaped, deconstructed pop” (Boomkat) of their debut EP’s Okey (2017) and Have Fun (2018), Smerz seamlessly weave together techniques and sounds pulled from chamber and classical music, hip hop, R&B, and hard electronics, with the end product always resulting in something altogether uncanny. The duo, who produce, write, direct and conceptualize all their own work, carve out a space where it’s not so impossible for dreams, both big and small, to grow in the midst of the systemic societal weeds that tangle up people’s self-worth and confidence. Taking their audio-visual experience across the globe, Smerz have curated performances at the Tate Modern, MOCA Geffen, MIRA Festival with Weirdcore.TV, the Norwegian National Company of Contemporary Dance and Club To Club. With Believer, their 2021 debut full-length album on XL Recordings, they formalize the boundless sonic world that started to emerge within each of their debut EP’s and in their running NTS monthly residency. Are you a Believer? PRESS “Everybody’s favorite experimental Norwegian synth-pop duo, Smerz, is back….(returning) to the familiar effortlessly cool territory we’ve come to know them by.” – Paper Magazine “Smerz is the electronic duo of Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg, Norwegians now based in Denmark, whose music leaps amid pop, dance music and classical impulses.” – New York Times “There’s just something mesmerizing about how the two operate that takes you over..The beats and synths create a world that contradicts what the vocals are doing and leaves you with a stunning sound” – Closed Caption

“Polydans” is Marius Lauber’s (known internationally as celebrated producer, DJ, songwriter, and electronic musician Roosevelt) hotly-anticipated 3rd album (out Feb 26, 2021 via City Slang / Greco-Roman). The album serves as a kind of love letter to dance music, with Roosevelt embracing his own musical history and his love of the multi-faceted nature of the genre, and reconnecting with the intimate nuances that can make dance music feel truly alive. After taking a 4-piece live band around the world playing over 100 live shows and performing at numerous festivals tied to the success of his second album ‘Young Romance’, Marius decided to take some time to sit in his studio, reflect on his meteoric success in the pop music world (including becoming an in-demand producer, collaborating with Classixx and Washed Out and remixing artists like Rhye, Glass Animals, Chvrches and Charlotte Gainsbourg) and refocus himself on his musical roots. Hearkening back to the intimate clubs he’d DJ in, he sought to unearth the beating heart of dance music, where passion and excitement is woven into the intimate nuances of the genre, and the physical relationship between the DJ and those on the dancefloor. Playing almost every instrument on the record, Roosevelt created ‘Polydans’ by swirling together the spirits of 80s synth, disco, analogue, Yacht rock, and delirious dancefloor euphoria with amazing results. THE NATIONAL
The National | Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers | Cherry Tree EP The National’s Early Catalogue Remastered & Reissued, Out February 26th 2021 Twenty years on from the release of their self-titled debut album, The National are reissuing it along with 2003’s follow-up Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers and 2004’s Cherry Tree EP on February 26th 2021. With all three records having been remastered at Abbey Road Studios, the 2021 represses stay faithful to their original artwork while their stunning new masters help make these much-loved records sound as vital as ever, further emphasising the early signs of the sound that would go on to make them one of the finest and most beloved alternative bands of their generation.
The National Originally Released July 2 2001
Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers Originally Released September 1 2003
Cherry Tree EP Originally Released July 19 2004
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021, The National’s self-titled debut album of sozzled Americana is a thing of beauty, laden with heavy hints that this was a special band in the making.
The National’s second album, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers (2003) proved a leap forward from 2001’s eponymous debut, showing a band adept at delivering warm embraces and gut punches in equal measure.
Released a year before The National broke through with their third album Alligator, 2004’s Cherry Tree EP is a thrilling record which - thanks to its collection of delicate ballads and anthemic crowd-pleasers - sums up what they do best in under 30 minutes.
With word of mouth now spreading on the band, critics proved equally enthusiastic... Pitchfork in their glowing review called it a “Gorgeous train wreck” that “Lives up to its blunt title (with) Matt Berninger’s self-effacing barbs matched by the band’s equally potent hooks,” while Uncut also became early champions saying the album was “A genuine treasure... Livid as a bruise, this is brave, desperate, beautiful music.”
Now a firm fan-favourite, among Cherry Tree’s seven tracks are now National classics ‘About Today’ and ‘All The Wine’, plus a thrilling live version of ‘Murder Me Rachael’ that reminds of the band’s fearsome early live performances.
Their first release, The National arrived two years after The National formed, a time when they were juggling bandlife with needing to hold down full-time jobs. And while nods to the alt.rock artists that inspired them (Pavement, Silver Jews) can be heard, so too are the beginnings of something all their own – Matt Berninger’s stunning and unexpected lyrics being pinned to melodies that stop you in your tracks. The National marks the start point for one of the best bands of their generation with its new master helping elevate it to new levels. A great primer to a great band.
No longer a secret among those that know, Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers is an important record in The National’s discography with this new remaster showing that it’s more than standing the test of time.

RECORDS
Real Gone Music Celebrates Black History Month with Two More Releases from the Black Jazz Records Label! In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America, dedicated, in the words of Watts-based UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension) founder Horace Tapscott, “[to play music} about depicting the lives of black people in their communities all over this country, where it has been turned around and people have been made to feel unworthy.” In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an AfricanAmerican since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (1971-1975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020…right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. We are very, very proud to present the Black Jazz catalog on LP, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision Mastering, and pressed on black vinyl at Gotta Groove Records with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson, each vinyl reissue features the original blackand-white Black Jazz album artwork, which, on early releases, featured an identical front and back cover, with the back cover turned “upside down,” allowing for the album title to be visible regardless of how the LP was sitting in the record store rack. And, both our vinyl and CD releases will feature added liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power that draw a straight line between what was happening then…and what is happening right now. Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative with the release of each Black Jazz album.

HENRY FRANKLIN: The Skipper (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 26, 2021 Though it’s hard to pick a winner among the estimable Black Jazz catalog, this 1972 release from bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin would have to be near the top of the list. Franklin got his start woodshedding with Latin maverick Willie Bobo in the mid-‘60s and went on to play with The Three Sounds, but probably his most notable gig prior to this debut album was his stint in Hugh Masekela’s band (that’s Franklin playing bass with Masekela at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival). For The Skipper, Franklin assembled a crack outfit that included a horn section of trumpeter/flugelhornist Oscar Brashear (Bobby Hutcherson, Ry Cooder, Donny Hathaway) and tenor & soprano sax man Charles Owens (Buddy Rich, Horace Tapscott, John Mayall) along with a Masekela bandmate in electric pianist Bill Henderson and ace drummer Michael Carvin (Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Freddie Hubbard). This is such a unique, organic recording that it’s hard to make comparisons; definitely a little fusion, a little ‘60s Blue Note feel, and the usual Black Jazz journey to the more lyrical, pop-inspired (“Little Miss Laurie”) and funk-infused (“Plastic Creek Stomp”) sides of jazz, but perhaps the best comparison is late-‘60s Miles before he went electric. In any case, The Skipper is just a joy to listen to from start to finish, beautifully recorded by Black Jazz producer Gene Russell and blessed with some really fine writing, most of it by Franklin himself. First-time LP reissue and a must-have!

GENE RUSSELL: Talk to My Lady (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 26, 2021 In between acting as Producer on all of the Black Jazz label releases, keyboardist Gene Russell also cut two fine albums for the imprint, of which this is the second, released in 1973. Judging by the quality of their respective solo outings for the label, the fact that Russell’s band includes bassist Henry Franklin and guitarist Calvin Keys bodes very, very well for the quality of this record. And indeed, Talk to My Lady represents a sterling stylistic leap for Russell from his New Direction album, which was the first release issued on Black Jazz; here, he’s leading an electric band instead of the basic piano trio format found on the former record, and playing a number of original, soul jazz compositions like “Get Down” and the title tune. As for the covers, both “Me and Mrs. Jones” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” are heartfelt renditions given a little extra bounce by Russell’s ivory tickling and Franklin’s expressive bass playing in particular, while the version of “My Favorite Things” goes way out beyond what John Coltrane played on his original Atlantic studio version. It’s hard to go wrong with a Black Jazz album and you won’t on this one from the label’s creative helm. First-ever LP reissue!

SIVUCA: Sivuca (Limited Purple Vinyl Edition)
STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 26, 2021 Two of our favorite records that we here at Real Gone Music have reissued in the last few years were the debut pair of records (both originally released in the early ‘70s) by legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto; each album serves up a savory, bubbling stew of Brazilian folk, fusion jazz and bossa nova spiced with a hint of tropicalia. While Airto’s contributions on each record were, of course, front and center, there was another player on those records that almost stole the show: one Severino Dias de Oliveira a.k.a. Sivuca, a small, wizened man (often somewhat uncharitably described as “gnomish”) whose dazzling virtuosity on accordion, guitar, and keyboards—coupled with a powerful singing voice that belied his small stature—made one instantly sit up and take notice. Further investigation revealed that stealing the show was nothing new to Sivuca; championed by Oscar Brown, Jr., he was the instant star of tours by both Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba among others. Sivuca started making records back in the mid ‘50s, and recorded for a number of labels in the States, including Reprise and RCA, but it is this record, made in 1973 for the Vanguard label, that is the one that collectors worldwide have zeroed in upon. And with good reason; it offers the same beautiful blend of styles found on those Airto records, but with an emotional shading all its own, a joyfulness paradoxically infused with melancholy, best expressed on Sivuca’s mesmerizing take on Bill Withers’ oft-covered “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which is likely to become your favorite version. For its first-ever vinyl reissue, we’re pressing up 750 copies in purple vinyl. You will spin this one repeatedly, we promise!

ARTIST: LILYS TITLE: THE 3 WAY BLACK VINYL LP BOX LOT QTY: 30 LP FILE UNDER: INDIE ROCK LP 5584 / 090771558411 RELEASE DATE: 2/26/21 FUZZED-OUT GUITARS & HARPSICHORD A dapper departure from Lilys’ noise and shoegaze beginnings, The 3 Way is a panoply of musical influences that renders vintage 1960s mod rock and buttoned-up orchestral pop through the abstract expressionism of Kurt Heasley and company. On LP for the first time! “Although some critics accuse him of stealing Ray Davies' identity outright, Heasley has forged his own multifaceted re-tailoring of '60s mod- rock. And sure, Davies' influence looms large over songs like the harpsichordlaced ‘And One (on One)’ and ‘The Spirits Merchant.’ And on ‘The Generator,’ there's some nice piano work worthy of Charlie Brown's ivory- tickling pal Schroeder, and some cheeky ‘Oye Como Va,’ guitar quotes. To round things out, there's a nod to Mitch Ryder's revved-up Motor City car-rock on ‘Dimes Make Dollars,’ and the bubbly Lawrence Welk jazz of ‘Solar is Here.’” Michael Sandlin (from his 8.6 review on Pitchfork)
• FIRST EVER LP RELEASE OF THIS ‘99 MOD ROCKISH MASTERPIECE!
“As sharp and instantly likable as the Lilys' new The 3 Way is, it doesn't really start to make sense until you think of it as the '60s-pop-influenced equivalent of a funk record.” - Keith Phipps (AV Club)
• MATTE BLACK POLY-LINED SLEEVES IN A HIGH GLOSS JACKET FEATURING THE ORIGINAL ART.
At the end of the rock ‘n’ roll century, The 3 Way quietly streaked across the night sky in stylistic retrograde. Lilys’ bittersweet mod-rock symphony would burn out band members and get buried by its record label, leaving trace memories of Kurt Heasley’s brilliant and complicated vision. Until now. WAYNE DAVIS - WAYNE DAVIS Strut present the first ever reissue of an essential lost classic from the Black Fire catalogue, Wayne Davis’ powerful selftitled gospel-soul album from 1976. An accomplished vocalist and keyboard player, Davis had studied in Washington D.C. and had worked with Roberta Flack and she subsequently secured him a recording deal with Atlantic Records; he released the 'A View From Another Place' album in 1973 and Roberta contributed electric piano to one of the tracks. Davis was the dropped from the label and his subsequent album was released by Jimmy Gray on Black Fire. Produced by Jimmy Watkins and Bias Studios manager, Bob Dawson, the album line-up featured the celebrated poet and flautist Wanda Robinson and the horn section from legendary D.C. go-go pioneers Experience Unlimited. Wayne later returned the favour, appearing as a vocalist on Experience Unlimited’s seminal 'Free Yourself' album. This first international reissue of the album features new sleeve notes including band member interviews and original illustrated artwork by Muzi Branch. Audio was transferred from the original tapes by the album’s engineer, Bob Dawson, and was remastered by The Carvery.

BYARD LANCASTER - MY PURE JOY "From A Love Supreme to The Sex Machine!" The personal musical mantra of the late Philadelphia reedman Byard Lancaster informed an open-minded and varied lifetime in jazz. Strut presents one of Lancaster’s lesser known classics, ‘My Pure Joy’, recorded in 1992 for Black Fire.
Lancaster had initially cut his musical teeth with the avant-garde on New York’s Lower East Side in the 1960s (famously on sessions with pianist Dave Burrell and drummer Sunny Murray) and in Paris during the ‘70s after an appearance at the Actuel festival but, throughout his career, his path was built around community engagement, positivity and “the Philly jazz sound, Germantown style.” He became an ambassador for the music of the City Of Brotherly Love, starting his own Dogtown label, helping launch the Philly Jazz imprint and campaigning tirelessly to improve the circumstances of the city’s street musicians. Lancaster’s sessions for Black Fire were planned following a gig at Caverns Jazz Club in Washington DC. “Jimmy Gray of Black Fire and I originally met during the ‘riotous blisters’ of the late Sixties there,” explained Lancaster. “We became the best of friends.” Backed by a band of Philly musicians including percussionist Keno Speller and Baba Robert Crowder (drummer for Olatunji and Art Blakey), the album also featured the Drummers From Ibadan led by Tunde Kuboye, another influential figure dedicated to community jazz with whom Lancaster had bonded while teaching in Lagos. The result was a free-flowing set of spirituality and positivity, built around full band groove workouts, solo pieces and heavy African roots. “We had big fun documenting this music,” remembered Lancaster. The message of the album remains as relevant today as ever, “I dedicate this album to all African Americans in the USA. To the youth, I ask ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?’” Originally delayed by three years because of cashflow issues within Black Fire, ‘My Pure Joy’ eventually surfaced as one of the label’s final CD releases in 1995.

THIS IS JAMAICA SKA CD / LP STREET DATE: FEBRUARY 26, 2021 When first released, This Is Jamaica Ska followed in the footsteps of the successful Ska Authentic releases and also marked the first time that Clement Dodd began to showcase on LP his new discovery, The Wailers, who had begun tearing up the dances in Kingston with “Simmer Down.” This song had been held for exclusive use in the dances before it was finally put out on 45, now it gained album status marking the increased visibility of the group in the marketplace. In addition to “Simmer Down,” two other songs by The Wailers are also found on the album: “How Many Times”, and the blazing cover of Jimmy Clanton’s “Go, Jimmy, Go” which Clement Dodd had proposed for the group to incorporate into their repertoire. Also found on This Is Jamaica Ska are songs by Bajan Jackie Opel, a prolific hit maker for the label in this period, with the ribald “Push Wood” and the popular duet “The Vow” with Doreen Shaffer. Anchored by the instrumentals of Roland Alphonso (Clement Dodd’s good friend), Don Drummond’s “Roll On Sweet Don” (here in its correct form), The Skatalites mentoinspired “Salt Lane Gal,” and mighty vocal outings by the cream of the label’s stars, this became a monumental release. Special mention to “Bongo Tango” which features what is basically a drum solo by Lloyd Knibbs throughout the entire song! The cover for This Is Jamaica Ska alone is iconic in Ska circles and here taken from the original WIRL release. Transferred in 2020 from the original master tapes, This Is Jamaica Ska is a welcome addition to the Studio One Original Masters Series Archive.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• First official LP reissue of this Jamaican classic since the 1960s and first-ever official release on CD. • Includes four bonus tracks not included on the original or digital release. • Transferred from the original tapes, making this release part of Studio One’s Original Masters Series • Mastered by GRAMMY-winning engineer Toby Mountain. • Produced by Studio One founder and “Father of Jamaican Music” Coxsone Dodd. • Includes songs by Studio One legends like Bob Marley & The Wailers, The Skatalites, Jackie Opel and more.

JIMMY EDGAR
CHEETAH BEND different universes of sound coming together to create an entirely new domain of knowing.” From the opening whirr of “Crown” onwards, ‘Cheetah Bend’ does precisely that, unspooling fresh perspectives and glistening sound design that flaunts genre rules while respecting genre spirit. “Have A Great Now!” evokes classic West Coast boogie without dropping a beat, while “Zig Zag” gorgeously reconciles deconstructed club with the glitch work of his past. “Curves” seems to capture Berlin and L.A. in one fell swoop, creeping and bleeping towards its close with cinematic gravity. Building upon his prior collaborative endeavors, not the least of which being the various EPs released on his own Ultramajic imprint throughout the 2010s, ‘Cheetah Bend’ finds Jimmy working in tandem with a veritable vanguard of forward-thinking artists towards his unique vision. “SOPHIE and I spent time together trading files, sounds and techniques, developing a new kind of version of modal synthesis,” Jimmy says, having used resonators and delays to emulate sonic environs akin to pipes, tunnels, and vibrating sheets. SOPHIE and TNGHT’s Hudson Mohawke respectively assist on the tenuous bass rattle of “Metal” and “Bent,” adding their inflections to Jimmy’s signatures. Beyond these production partners, ‘Cheetah Bend’ achieves its ethos with the aid of some well- placed vocal guests. Rapper Danny Brown does irreparable microphone damage to “Get Up,” a tough love motivational set to springy synth flourishes and bass rattling. Toronto singer Rochelle Jordan, a recent J-E-T-S collaborator, imbues the lithe R&B suite “Crank” with her breathy delivery, while Atlanta trapper B La B spits streetwise singsong over a rugged and snappy beat. “I bring an energy to the room whatever I do I wanna be the best at it - ideas, direction and technique refined,” Jimmy explains.
Looking back, Jimmy Edgar has a lot to be proud of. Over the course of the last decade-and-a- half, the Detroit native has proven both a celebrated favorite and consistent fixture of dance music in its multitudinous forms. Looking over the arc of his lengthy and diverse discography, both under his own name as well as pseudonymously, it’s hard not to see him as one of the most innovative producers and skilled sound designers to emerge this millennium, an artist whose legacy has touched untold numbers of home listeners and dance floor revelers alike. Since first emerging onto the scene as a prodigious teen via early pseudonymous offerings for respected electronic labels like Merck, he broke out properly under his own name in 2004 as a Warp Records act. Jimmy swiftly proved a savvy figure in the IDM world by employing the homegrown sounds of electro and ghetto-tech as part of his glitchy compositions. A restless innovator, he honed his skills in the ensuing years, eventually moving to the storied German city and developing a newfound affinity for techno there.
By the time ‘Cheetah Bend’ wraps, it’s hard not to see how far Jimmy has come from his early days. The culmination of a catalog brimming with high points, the album rewards fans who’ve gladly stuck with him over the years, and invites a new batch of listeners to dive into his world. Above all, it remains true to his artistry. “I'm not willing to sacrifice integrity,” he asserts, reflecting on the path that got him here. “Now we create a new reality.”

Location often sparks inspiration. Sometimes, all it takes is a change of scenery to introduce something new in one’s creative process. For Jimmy, the move from the dance music mecca of Berlin to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles proved a turning point in an already formidable career of artistic exploration. “Berlin was a self aware bubble where I was able to be immersed into music and rhythms simplicity,” he says. Relocating stateside in LaLa Land altered his perspective once again, exposing him to a wider musical universe, including modern mainstream hip-hop and R&B that had been shadowed out while living overseas. “The more you open the doors to sounds and ideas, the more exploration you find fresh. Moving around and opening myself up to other sounds allowed me to find my sound.” He refers to the period as one of research and development. Before long, he was producing for everyone from former Danity Kane singer DAWN to erstwhile Odd Future associate Vince Staples. Continuing on his spirited journey through the multifaceted realm of electronic music, Jimmy makes a grand return to the solo album fat with ‘Cheetah Bend’ for Innovative Leisure, the same label behind his most recent J-E-T-S output with Machinedrum. Recorded over the past few years in multiple cities including Atlanta, Detroit, and, of course, L.A., it draws upon his vibrant discography as much as it does the contemporary ubiquity of rap music. Coming some eight years after ‘Majenta’, his oft-explicit set of pop-wise booty anthems, the album improbably synthesizes what might seem like disparate styles together, resulting in something as cohesive as it is engrossing. “The value I bring is hybridization,” Jimmy explains of his approach. “I think about

Rian Treanor's "Obstacle Scattering EP" arrives in a flurry of disorienting rhythmic bursts and de-purposed rave hallmarks. The four-track EP follows the Yorkshire producer's acclaimed "File Under UK Metaplasm", an album that welded elements from the UK's sprawling dance music history with genre-breaking sounds from further afield. Here, Rian goes straight for the jugular with four tracks assembled specifically for the dancefloor.

Playing with "the idea of sound being an obstacle that you have to get your body around," each track on the EP presents a suite of complications for adventurous ravers. 'Obstacle 1' folds the influence of SND into a hi-nrg singeli framework, simmering lush FM synths in a broth of tangled kicks; 'Obstacle 2' was written for Rian's set at 2019's Aphex Twin-curated Warehouse Project and distills his early obsession with Planet Mu in hyperactive squelches that deftly flit between brutalist glitches and ear-pummeling bass. Meanwhile irradiant chords continuously refract a bouncing 4x4 groove on 'Obstacle 3', subtly shifting the focus as they alternate and interlock. Closer 'Obstacle 4' switches things up once again, deploying the idea of pause and effect with staccato stabs that follow whirls of modulated synth. These four obstacles are DJ tools with spikes - selected grooves that don't fit anywhere except together, mapping out Rian's constantly-shifting relationship with both the club and the legacy of boundary-pushing dance music. They feverishly demonstrate the outer limits of a streamlined sonic palette, devastating speakers and dancefloors in equal measure.

GENRE : Electronic FILE UNDER : “M” Mouse on Mars RELEASE DATE : February 26, 2021 NO EXPORT (S. AMERICA EXPORT OK)
LISTEN HERE Mouse on Mars, the Berlin-based duo of Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma, approach electronic music with an inexhaustible curiosity and unparalleled ingenuity. AAI (Anarchic Artificial Intelligence) takes their fascination with technology and undogmatic exploration a quantum leap further. Emerging from a primordial ooze of rolling bass and skittering electronics, hypnotic polyrhythms and pulsing synthesizers propel the listener across the record’s expanse. Hidden in the duo’s hyper-detailed productions is a kind of meta-narrative. Working with AI tech collective Birds on Mars and former Soundcloud programmers Ranny Keddo and Derrek Kindle, the duo collaborated on the creation of bespoke software capable of modeling speech; text and voice from writer and scholar of African Studies Louis Chude-Sokei, and DJ/producer Yağmur Uçkunkaya were fed into the software as a model, allowing Toma and Werner to control parameters like speed or mood, thereby creating a kind of speech instrument they could control and play as they would a synthesizer. The album’s narrative is quite literally mirrored in the music - the sound of an artificial intelligence growing, learning and speaking. This exploration of artificial intelligence as both a narrative framework and compositional tool, allowing the duo to summon their most explicitly science-fiction work to date.

A genre-less embrace of cutting-edge technologies have ensured that each Mouse on Mars release sounds strikingly modern, a fact made more remarkable when one reflects on the duo’s 25 years of making music. AAI compiles some the most immediate and gripping music in Mouse on Mars’ extensive catalogue. In Chude-Sokei’s text, as machine learning advances, robots begin to develop language, conscience, empathy - “anarchic” and unpredictable qualities. Drawing parallels between the evolution of human and machine, AAI uses technology as a lens to examine deep philosophical questions. The question of how we use technology and world resources feels particularly poignant and timely as we head into 2021. AAI posits that we must embrace AI and technology as a collaborator to break out of our current cultural and moral stagnation, and to ensure our survival as a species. As Werner explains: “We have to let AI develop qualities that we attach to humans, like empathy, imperfection and distraction. Not to avoid machines becoming competitors who will do things faster or better, but because we’ll stay stuck in our selfishness, fear and xenophobia if we do not open up to those new concepts of life machines are able represent.”

With his deft and stylistically varied playing Mahood escapes psychedelic tropes and chemical fueled alterations and instead celebrates an escape into the natural world. Future Times taps into psychedelia’s counter-cultural heritage as music for protest, liberation and imagining new ways of being in this world. From acclaimed albums with heavy-psych mainstays Eternal Tapestry to his prolific solo excursions, Mahood’s work has always been defined by his restless exploratory spirit and reverence for the environment. As Plankton Wat, Dewey Mahood creates expressionist compositions that exude a supernatural grace and patience, reflecting the resplendent beauty and mythical energy of the West Coast’s wild places. Piece blossoms from low-lit, porchside ambience into powerful head-trips, ushering the listener through ravines of feedback and along warm currents of synthesizer drift to peaks of lysergic bliss. Mahood’s masterful and distinct guitarwork consistently blurs the confines of the instrument, at once texturally and melodically rich. Future Times elevates Mahood’s psychedelic instrumentals to new planes. Written to the backdrop of social unrest and climate change fueled fires, Mahood lays out a sprawling cinematic and psychedelic survey of a planet in crisis that weaves a path of hope through the darkness. Recorded in the spring of 2020, with most of the United States sheltering in place, Future Times began as a meditation on the times. With the optimism of spring and the promise of summer replaced by anxiety about the future, music became an important means of processing difficult emotions and connecting with the outside world. Mahood developed pieces created with musical partner Dustin Dybvig and engineer/producer Victor Nash, transmuting the expansive energy of the live improvisations into lean guitar, bass and keyboards compositions.

Banane Bleu (French for “Blue Banana”) is a nomadic and truly European record, hailing from rented workspaces in some of the continent’s key cities - Berlin, Athens, Paris - and recorded with instruments that were often borrowed from likeminded musicians. Written solely by Frànçois Marry himself, close collaborator and Weird World artist Jaakko Eino Kalevi was enlisted for production duties whilst Renaud Letang (Feist, Gonzales, Connan Mockasin) mixed the album. The title of the album is taken from the blue banana concept, a geographical theory that groups together a corridor of Europe’s biggest cities, originally conceived in the 1980s. The theory states that the blurring of these cities’ boundaries has resulted in the formation of one massive, interconnected megalopolis. Expanding on the theory, Frànçois poetized it, picturing a luminescent blue banana shape that you can see from space with vibrant, ethereal currents that surround and bind us. It explores common cultural and romantic ground, creating an album full of missed meetings and misunderstandings. “I have often asked myself what my relationship history would be like if I had been born on another continent. Our idea of love, which comes from the 18th and 19th centuries, is ingrained in the walls and aromas of cities, cafes, nights out in bars, romantic getaways and city breaks; as if European electricity emitted some kind of romantic scent.” This electric grid of romance is personified in the blue banana concept. Songs, such as “Julie,” “Holly Go Lightly” or “Golden Lips,” date from the time Frànçois spent living in Bristol in his early 20s. They twinkle with a lingering nostalgia synonymous with British pop music: catchy yet deceptively carefree. Others are much more recent, like the hypnotic “Par le passé,” whose glistening keys were recorded at MABA, an artist residence that adjoins an art gallery and a retirement home in the Paris suburbs.

Featuring duet with STEF CHURA on A-side “Schatze” The Schatze b/w Failure 7” features two new tracks from Ohtis, including a duet with Stef Chura, and was mixed by Collin Dupuis (Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen, St. Vincent). It follows the release of Ohtis' critically acclaimed 2019 debut album Curve of Earth. The release is led by “Schatze,” a new song that features Saddle Creek’s Stef Chura. A character study of the Selfish Antisocial Male, it is told primarily through the lens of his long put-upon girlfriend - which Chura acts the part of - in a series of complaints about his objectionable behavior. “I’ve always loved Ohtis and Curve of Earth is one of my favorite recent releases to come out,” Chura says of her involvement. “Sam is a rare songwriter. He speaks from an honest and dark place with a sincerity that I think is refreshing and deeply relatable. Adam is an old friend who was living down the street from me in Detroit at the time this collaboration came to be tossed around. I think someone on my Instagram kept asking me about doing a song with them... So I made a poll as a joke which led to the inevitable. When they showed me the song and the call and response format I was instantly in love with it.” Though light-hearted and fun in its tone, “Schatze” offers no illusions about the state of affairs: he is wrong, selfish, and unrepentant about it all. “I got the idea for the song on an oceanfront balcony up in Cambria when my wife got annoyed by my neurotic vape addiction crampin’ the vibes,” Sam says. “Most of the rest was written and recorded last year, late at night in a hotel room in Amsterdam.” The track actually takes its name from a cat belonging to Sam’s friend Gerald, which Sam says is extremely violent and possessive. “He has put Gerald's wife Teri in the hospital, and fucked me up badly more than once because I had refused to admit there was a cat alive whose heart I could not win,” Sam says. “Turns out Schatze is such a cat.”

B-side “Failure” can be seen as the Selfish Antisocial Male in a moment of introspective crisis. He is struck by fear and panic about the consequences of his behaviors and what it means for his future. Whereas in “Schatze” he breezily appeals to his freedom to do as he pleases, in “Failure” his fears indicate that perhaps these behavior patterns do not represent personal freedom but in fact quite the opposite. “‘Failure’ was written many moons ago after visiting a walk-in clinic for an STD test attended by a ‘Dr. John’ and psyching myself out waiting for the results” Swinson says. “They eventually came back negative, but not before spawning this insane fucked up stream of consciousness song. I had always stood by the song living up to its title until Adam and Nate dug it back up and added this Bonnaroo-worthy outro to it.” Offering even further insight into a brutally honest mind, the two new songs are dark, raw, but always tinged with a compelling sense of sardonic wit. Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist.

Weaving these supple sounds of yore into the techniques of today, Boyscott's distinct bedroom-recorded bops betray the limitations of their modest studio situation with a sonic depth not commonly associated with lo-fi projects.

PALE SPRING CYGNUS
The Veil Nebula, a huge cloud of plasma and dust, is notorious among astronomers for being difficult to see through a telescope. Long-exposure astrophotographs show gossamer electric blues and reds, like bridges of woven ice and rubies frozen in the sky. Listening to CYGNUS, the debut from Pale Spring, composed of married couple Emily Harper Scott and Drew Scott, is like noticing collapsed stars return as sound. Drawing from nightmares real and dreamed, CYGNUS makes loops and rifts manifest, threading pop melodies through rings of samples and drum programming. Pale Spring wrote and recorded CYGNUS in Baltimore, whose fertile music scene has seen acts like Lower Dens, Ami Dang and Beach House build rich, selfcontained worlds of sound, both sonically inquisitive and mood-setting. CYGNUS expands on the foundation these groups have developed, with stately, smooth pop songs incorporating layered harmonies, glitches, and, on “Old Sounds” -- before Fiona Apple, no less! -- dog barks. Music runs in Harper Scott’s family: a classically trained musician herself, her grandfather
Critics noticed CYGNUS when it first came out last year, with glowing reviews in Bandcamp, Tiny Mix Tapes and DAZED. American Dreams Records’ vinyl reissues of CYGNUS and DUSK mark the first time they’ve been made widely available as physical media. “I’m excited for this music to be reborn in a new context,” says Harper Scott. “I feel like we’re getting a second Much of the album renders anxieties, chance.” There’s no need for equipment to depressions and nightmares within surreal hear how far they’ve come. settings. Harper Scott’s words seem to float, belying her vocal control; Scott’s production crackles, stutters and thrums, as if reflecting the characters inhabiting the songs. On album opener “Silence,” beats clatter like a pitch-shifted trashcan lid. “Belongings,” written by Chris Taylor of DC screamo pioneers pageninetynine, begins with a beat like a knock at the door. “When you come home,” Harper Scott sings, “The cats won’t speak. It’s as if you were never here.” “Old Sounds” describes the exhaustion of unrelenting depression: “this feeling beating me ‘til there ain’t much...but a few notes kept in a box you have left.” studied at Juilliard under his uncle, who played for the New York Philharmonic. Scott’s grandfather sang doo wop, and his influence paved the way for Scott to explore music; eventually, he taught himself how to sample. His accompaniment provides an underpinning for Harper Scott’s vocals and instrumentals.

PALE SPRING DUSK
The cover to Pale Spring’s second album, DUSK, depicts frontwoman and multiinstrumentalist Emily Harper Scott flanked by massive desert rocks, standing tall, as if she’d just landed on an alien planet. It’s an apt metaphor for the reissue of Pale Spring’s first albums, which grapple with dreams, tension and assertion, on American Dreams Records. DUSK is the product of the group’s move from Baltimore to Los Angeles, juxtaposing challenging subject matter with ethereal arrangements that incorporate samples, synthesizers and analog instruments.
producing are interconnected processes for me,” Harper Scott says. She passes musical ideas back and forth with Scott, whose production responds to or builds from her instrumentals and melodies. Often songs incorporate bits of old ones, as on album closer “Dark,” which revolves around an outtake from their sessions for CYGNUS. Here and throughout the record, Harper Scott elasticizes syllables: “Give me a space that I can call sacred,” she sings, and just as her harmonies suggest the song’s chord progressions, the song suggests such a space.
Conceptually, Pale Spring attempts to reconcile apparent contradictions in the human condition: healing from, and feeling comforted by, depression and generational trauma. Harper Scott writes songs that relate “intensely personal accounts” and “the images that haunt my dreams.” DUSK abounds with wounds, breaks and bodies; characters yearn, make love, bare themselves. These songs have a dreamlike quality, as if existing outside of time; their simultaneous spareness, richness and languor belies the pair’s intricate collaboration. “Songwriting and
On “Safe,” Harper Scott’s oblique vocal melodies snake around her rhythmic drum programming, at times evoking British landscape music band Hood. Elsewhere, the record features instrumentals from Baltimore-via-Africa polymath Infinity Knives (whose own record, Dear, Sudan, was just reissued by Phantom Limb). “Slow Motion” is emblematic: Harper Scott casually glides between susurrations in the fourth and fifth octaves while dawbs of guitar and samples suggesting saxophone and piano float around her vocals. The song features a music video directed by
Priscilla Mars, with lush visuals paralleling the song’s allusions to physicality. “It really captures that creepy, ethereal, Lynchian element that LA has,” says Scott. “There’s a whole different gloom here.” Now, with DUSK widely available on LP, Pale Spring has the chance to share their music with listeners old and new. For the band -- who originally released DUSK last summer, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and cancelled tours in support of its release -- the rerelease is rejuvenating. “We made these records while coping with transitional periods of our lives as individuals and as a couple,” says Scott. “It will be an intense experience to listen to them again when I can put the record on the turntable.”

Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Founded in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists to grow, and a space for established acts to break with tradition. Over a decade later, that inclusive attitude continues. Its output spans the new jazz messengers of the UK underground, fresh tangents in hip-hop-tipped-beatmaking, from snapshots of Havana’s burgeoning club culture to the indefinable sound of Melbourne’s rising underground. We are pleased to offer a wonderfully eclectic selection of our essential bestsellers and unique 2020 releases including the London Jazz future classic ‘We Out Here’ compilation alongside its Melbourne contemporary ‘Sunny Side Up’ both showcasing incredible music movements stemming from underground culture. Also the self-acclaimed ‘backpack jazz producer’ Kassa Overall mesmerises us with his Hip Hop infused experimental sounds in ‘I THINK I’M GOOD’. Listed in Time Magazine’s ‘Best Albums of 2019,’ Joe Armon-Jones’ ‘Turn To Clear View’ is an album that blurs the lines between bass-heavy dub, contemporary club culture and his background as a pioneering force in the modern jazz scene. Our passion for showcasing global sounds continues with a brand new project by 96-year-old Mexican drummer Tino Contreras. His new work features seven new recordings, contemporary jazz themes interlaced with 3/4 rhythms, written and recorded in Mexico City last year. Also included in this offer is the critically acclaimed album by Daymé Arocena, ‘Cubafonia,’ rooting her compositions in Cuba’s classic rhythms adding her unique contemporary flair.
