or more than 45 years, the Atlanta Rhythm Section has been a rock force, as potent now with three original members (vocalist Rodney Justo, keyboardist Dean Daughtry, bassist Paul Goddard) as they were in the ‘70s. This compilation spans their entire career, harking back prior to their inception before bringing you up to the present day. Disc two is a treasure trove of live performances from their hitmaking heyday. The Atlanta Rhythm Section... ARS... In the annals of rock and roll, where do they fit? They put out 15 albums of excellent original material, and consistently put on entertaining live showsboth of which helped establish a broad if not huge fan base. They had some big hits and have been a major player in the Southern Rock scene. But is that the whole story? In some circles, maybe. But for those who’ve really gotten to know their music over the years, there’s a lot more to the story. ARS was paired with contemporaries Lynyrd Skynyrd as the successors to the Allman Brothers - carrying the mantle of “Southern Rock” in the late 70s. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, it may have made sense at the time. But performing songs that were more musically diverse and having hits that had a softer, pop sound, the “Southern Rock” label was a mixed blessing and many of their unique musical accomplishments became lost in a genre that has lived on to this day-but never really fit ARS. Why has the ARS endured the passage of the decades so elegantly? “Songs, man. The songs are strong,” says Rodney Justo. “People tend to think were a southern rock band. But we’re not. In the Ruffians’ case that meant shedding some of their more arty influences (the Pixies, Talking Heads) and reconnecting with the sounds they first heard on their parents’ turntables as kids: Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, and pre-psychedelic Beatles. “It’s about going back to the deepest, most satisfying itch to scratch,” says lead singer Luke Lalonde. And in doing so, the album takes you back to a time when the Ruffians sounded less like a band and more like a gang, raising a wild ruckus and speaking in telepathic tongues. Uncle, Duke & The Chief is also the first record since 2013’s Birthmarks to feature the group’s original three-piece lineup of guitarist/vocalist Luke Lalonde, bassist Mitch DeRosier and drummer Steve Hamelin. Lalonde says of the band’s reunited core trio, “We all have the same weird, shorthand language of knowing how to put a song together…it’s really super-fast and efficient.” The album’s writing was greatly informed by both a cancer diagnosis for Lalonde’s father around the same time as the death of David Bowie. “What really resonated with me about Bowie’s death was how beautiful it was—it wasn’t necessarily a sad thing,” notes Lalonde. “The light is something that you should embrace and feel okay going towards it.”

Angie is an audio scientist with sounds, both modern and traditional, then mixing technology that we use every day, like Siri to create his songs. What has come out of him is a gutted-out heart, a re-wired brain and motor skills that are sharper than a butcher knife in the kitchen. The collection of new songs Life Is A Flower, Life Is A Gun almost didn’t make it,to tape,to the recording microphone, to the stage. It’s been a while since the musical world has heard from Angie Aparo, his last album was released almost eight years ago. You might know him from his songs, being covered by Faith Hill, Big & Rich, Edwin McCain, Sheila E. and Miley Cyrus. You might go his solo shows. If you have cd, THE AMERICAN; you heard greatness, if you saw him live; you saw genius, and now this album. Life Is A Flower, Life Is A Gun, is aptly titled for someone who has gone through several life-changing events. So, to catch you up we have to go backward with one day last year in April; one day he will never forget. Angie suffered a stroke at the age of 55: ”I suffered from a spontaneous carotid artery dissection (left neck). Within a few hours, I had a stroke due to the dissection. Although there are many forms, I suffered from aphasia, inability to understand speech and a subtype of aphasia called, Anomia, the inability to name things. I also suffered from memory loss (which I believe accompanies most all strokes). Knowing I was a singer-songwriter, my neurologist asked me to put a melody to everything I see in the world, outside, in my house, at the grocery store, anything, anywhere. Due to his recommendation, I believe my use of melody helped me reprogram my brain. Although I still experience lapse of memory now and then, I feel I can operate normally in life. And I've learned how to sing my songs again!” Created solely by Angie himself, using computer loops, traditional instruments, and the voice of Siri give his songs a visual texture to the audio landscape capture in his mind. Angie is an audio scientist when it comes to his art form and that’s why he’s so exemplary. “As a stroke survivor, it’s important to me to raise awareness about stroke, which can happen to anyone at any time,” said Aparo. “It wasn’t always easy, but I came back strong from a stroke and have returned to my music career with a newfound appreciation for life. Music saved me and now I want to share my gift with others by playing a few songs at the National Stroke Association’s Comeback Trail 5K in my, hometown.” While healing from a stroke is a lifelong process, Angie continues to embrace his journey with curiosity and education. As he begins to explore, Angie finds himself, searching for a guru of sorts; spiritual guides or teachers in many different doctrines to share his story of the medical, physical and psychological interruptions that the stroke caused. This past fall, Angie made a trip to Japan, where he connected to the Japanese people and culture. He even played his song, “Cry” for a local bartender who was a huge Faith Hill fan. This solidified his belief that we are all from one place, which begins with love for all. As Life Is A Flower, Life Is A Gun opens up we have an artist that had to reboot, restart and relearn. Angie has regained, released and in the process has been reborn since that mind-shattering day. But if anything, we all can learn from him. For as a society we tend to give sympathy out to those have fallen ill, suffered or in deep pain with their minds or bodies. And Angie does want your hugs but he also you wants you to take his determination and inhale it for yourself.

utsider guitar-pop outfit Runaway Brother is much smarter than your typical punk fare, too catchy for emo purists and not quite cool enough for the indie elite. Of course, that’s precisely why we love the Cleveland, OH quartet’s spiraling, ever-shifting songs and camptivatingly ambitious arrangements. Set for release on 16th February 2018 on his own label imprint Prediction Records. As main songwriter and founder member of Kaiser Chiefs, Hodgson already has an enviable record of global hits under his belt, including number 1 single Ruby and I Predict A Riot. Since leaving the band in 2012 he has written and produced for other artists, and has seen success in this new world with the likes of Mark Ronson, John Newman, Hurts and Ratboy. A solo career was not something Hodgson was even considering, as he explains: ‘It was a long time since I’d written a song just for myself… and then I wrote Thank You”. Thank You was written one night in Leeds when Hodgson was suffering from man-flu and waiting for an email that never arrived about a track he had co-written for another artist. It proved a pivotal moment in the making of Tell Your Friends, and was quickly followed by first single Suitable and RSVP in the same week: “I suddenly thought, OK, let’s make this a proper album.” All the tracks were written and recorded at Hodgson’s home studio in London in the summer of 2017. And as quickly as the ideas came to fruition, the album was completed when he “…couldn’t write any more and knew that it was finished.” It was produced alongside Dave McCracken (Ian Brown, Depeche Mode) whom he met on the Ivor Novello judging panel, highlighting again the serendipitous creation of Tell Your Friends. Hodgson played all the instruments himself, aside from a guitar solo by Kaiser’s cohort, Whitey on Feel Better, violin on Don’t Forget To Go To Sleep courtesy of Anna C Hodgson, and My Own American Dream features The Music’s Rob Harvey (keeping it in the Leeds family) on backing vocals. Adept at his craft, Tell Your Friends marks Hodgson’s leap from band member to solo artist, and is a collection of songs that sees him expressing himself in a more personal way than ever before: “The lyrics are very honest, I wanted to express myself on this record, delve a little deeper and draw out some feelings I’d never touched on in songs before… I’d mainly written with someone else’s voice in mind, so the lyrics would reflect that. I would shy away from writing very personal things, but with this album I thought there’s no point doing it unless it’s honest.” Encompassing his knack for a melody, the album basks in his ability to conjure a great lyric and punchy chorus, be it about love, frustration or fear. It’s a bitter old saying, combining a bit of cleverly worded elder wisdom with a large dose of grizzled envy. Researchers have traced the quote all the way back to a newspaper published in 1931: specifically, writer Ted Cook’s syndicated column, “Cook-Coos.” Which is damn funny, considering that in this century, neo-Psych Rock crew THE CUCKOOS are smashing that famous quote’s premise with jubilant glee. This Austin, Texas based band isn’t wasting their youth, nor are they jettisoning the hallmarks of the greats who came before them. On the contrary, these four young men draw liberally from the deep well of vintage pop, heady psychedelic rock, sizzling hot funk, and even a bit of old-fashioned blues to create music that is at once classic yet forward thinking. East Man is a new project from Anthoney Hart and its material predates his previous work as Basic Rhythm. His unique take on grime reduces the sound to its steely fundamentals, bringing in influences from dancehall, drum and bass and techno to gird the voices of the MCs he works with. His own name for this hardcore continuum mongrel is 'Hi Tek'. Anthoney struck a friendship with the academic and theorist Paul Gilroy, who wrote the album introduction below, after starting personal research on representations of working class and mixed race families. He asked Paul for some help after coming across his work via Stuart Hall, Paul's mentor. Their discussions and friendship developed, and it dawned on Anthoney that his research and the East Man album had some synergy, so he asked Paul to write a piece conveying that. ---

Their distinctive street cultures stretch back into the nineteenth century when, just like today, a stylish public presence signified danger to respectable people. At that time, Britain’s class conflicts were being re-made amidst all the glorious fruits of a global empire. These days, Britain’s imperial wealth and prestige are long gone. Today’s young people are excluded and marginalized, confined and criminalized, yet they remain at the heart of the vital, energetic best of our city. Their energy and imagination drive London’s convivial culture. They duck and dive just like their predecessors. They hustle, they suffer and they survive. Even where knives are common, most of the problems that come up get resolved without murderous violence. The defining experience of their precarious situation is more likely to be fear or anxiety than warfare between gangs. Their violence is more likely to turn inwards on to their loved ones and family members. There are many forms of self harm and self medication. Yet the space in which those youthful lives unfold has contracted. The scale on which life is lived has shrunk. Moving around can be expensive. Surveillance is constant. Dignity and certainty are difficult to find and hold on to. It can be hard to feel comfortable outside the spaces and places you know best. Those familiar circuits are marked out by the roadside shrines of dead flowers that show just how vulnerable you can quickly become. We have been losing London to Babylon but we are busy making a new place. The edges of the city have become fertile. The weeds grow up explosively between palisaded concrete boxes and the litter-strewn greenery. This is not zones 1 and 2 where houses and flats are capital rather than buildings to live in. The music that comes out of that edgy world isn’t what it was a generation ago, but it’s still fundamental--necessary for life. These shocking sounds can be a part of healing and repair while staying faithful to the pressures that forged them. Musicians can’t make a living from their creativity, but their listeners can’t understand this historical moment unless they get to grips with its local rules, meanings and poetry. This is not America. Even without words, this music speaks for itself and tells a story. It calls out to be understood while seeking ways to escape interpretation. We are always more than either this or that. We are more than either black or white.

While yndi halda have previously worn the mantles of “instrumental” and “post-rock” music - especially with their 2006 debut Enjoy Eternal Bliss - their recent movements have occupied considerably broader territories. The closely-crafted vocal harmonies and new musicalities of Under Summer have been continued in A Sun-Coloured Shaker, but their form is now embedded into a symbiotic world in which a love of true songwriting, meticulous post-classical arrangement, contemporary indie, choral music, and transcendent longform structure coexist. The band themselves reference inspirations as unexpected as Alice Coltrane, Akira Rabelais and Lonnie Liston Smith, whose influences subtly intertwine with more immediate comparison points. Like a terrible comet coming to hit the earth, and writing a list of things you would save first runs the repeated, principal lyric in the piece’s would-be chorus. yndi halda can be well characterised by this line: their music is of sadness, lament, sorrow, but also full of light and ablution, delivered with joyousness. The band - now augmented to a six-piece, split in half between the UK’s South-East and South-West coasts following relocations - write: “As we completed our last album Under Summer - having spent 9 years slowly chipping away at the composition, arrangements, production - we found that we were left with small pockets of music that we really loved, but had no home for. One piece in particular felt so attached to the rest of the LP, so much a real part of it, but was nowhere near completion even by the time we had finished working on Under Summer. We knew it had to be a part of the album eventually, but also that it needed more time. So, between tours and obligations for Under Summer, we met to continue writing, and we eventually reached our destination: an accompaniment to the album, a new song that tells the leftover stories. We see A Sun-Coloured Shaker as the passing of night that follows Under Summer’s day. The dawn after the album’s dusk has faded. We wanted to express the realisation that something as simple and everyday as sunrise can be so truly life-giving. That the natural rhythm of nightfall and daybreak is a foundation of reality and being. We recorded the EP in a handful of locations, just like the album, but primarily in a beautiful rural studio named Deep Litter, located deep in the Cornish countryside. It felt like a return to the barn of our first formation and first album recording (though Deep Litter is converted and fully equipped; for Enjoy Eternal Bliss we had to bring in a very rudimentary mobile rig). This is the first yndi halda record to feature the band’s new lineup. ily Mastrodimos has been recording songs as Long Neck since 2014, first as a bedroom solo project while she was a member cult punk faves Jawbreaker Reunion, and now as a fully realized rock band ... with drums and electric guitars and everything. Writing the kind of personal, introspective songs that might be more closely associated with the intimacy of her debut, Heights, the kinetic follow-up Will This Do? embraces the strength of Mastrodimos’s voice while amplifying her convictions and energy with the addition of, well, amplifiers. As a full band - which includes Kevin Kim, Alex Mercuri, and John Ambrosia - Long Neck makes music that falls somewhere between seasoned indie rock and urgent pop punk. It’s unquestionably louder and faster than Mastrodimos’s solo output, but thankfully no less thoughtful.

ABOUT Mt. Si is a collaborative project among three friends – Sarah Chernoff of Superhumanoids, Jesse Kivel from Kisses and Michael David of Classixx. When Imarhan released their self-titled debut album in 2016, they stepped into a genre already flooded with talent and exposure, but still managed to rise to the top and be heralded as the “new wave Of Tuareg music.” Their new album Temet is a huge leap forward in production, as well as creatively. Whereas their debut was anchored in the meditative Desert Blues tradition, Temet eclipses such notions, finding bounce and drive by stirring their sound with funk, fuzz, disco and rock. This is not a novel concept to the band, as anyone who has seen them play will attest. There is a disparity between their emotional and thoughtful first album and the raucous, ecstatic live show. And while Temet is decisively more eclectic, the aesthetic wisdom and singular vision of their debut remains on full display. Imarhan's experience as a touring band has reinforced the focus and meaning behind their music. Instead of traversing the desert, these Nomadic travelers have gone global to reflect on today’s struggles. “Temet” in Tamashek means “connections,“ and Imarhan use it as an energetic wake up call for unity. The new work also finds the band maturing, and realizing their influence. In the decade leading up to their first release, Imarhan were considered the youngsters of the Tuareg Desert Blues revolution. They started in 2008, whilst still still at school, under the guidance and counsel of their “bigger brothers” Tinariwen. The international tours and press have paved the way to become their own entity within the Algerian music community. With this ascension, they have been granted a more elevated responsibility to cultivate the blossoming new generations as leaders to young people around the Mali border, the front lines of the changing modern world. The balance between honoring and preserving the traditions to which they owe so much, while also evolving with the times is at the heart of their lives and their music. Singer and lead-guitarist Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane (aka Sadam) says, “We want children to be educated, to develop a mindset that will protect what is left of this community, because I've come to the conclusion that everything has an end, and also that everything evolves. The Tamashek language is gradually disappearing. Even we're confronted with this issue, but we're fighting to preserve it. It's the music that keeps us connected to the language, and allows us to continue speaking it.” The standout tracks are recognizable on first listen. The first single ’Azzaman’ teases krautrock before turning into a passionate new community anthem.’Tumast’ is a blazing, fervent liberation song with all-forone handclaps thundering over a frenetic guitar riff. ’Ehad Wad Dagh’ is a heavy disco jam that blows away any pre-existing concept of Tuareg music. However, it’s important that the album isn't judged on its powerful dance songs alone, there are subtle tones here as well. LISTEN HERE Japan’s fearless multi-instrumentalist and cultural provocateur Keiji Haino has made a career out of his free-form musical improvisations and diverse collaborations. Whether deconstructing American blues to a few rogue notes hanging across chasms of empty space in his solo endeavors, sparring with the nebulous fringes of psychedelia in Fushitsusha, or teaming up with musicians like Faust, Boris, Jim O’Rourke, Stephen O’Malley, John Zorn, and Peter Brötzmann for fleeting aural experiments. Haino’s work is never pre-planned or structured, but rather a completely spontaneous exploration of chemistry, texture, and dynamics. SUMAC’s tenure is much younger than Haino’s, though guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner has covered a similarly large swath of musical territory across numerous projects and collaborations, from the sedated drones of recent projects with Daniel Menche and William Fowler Collins to the modern compositions of Mamiffer and all the way back to the restless evolutions of post-metal stalwarts ISIS. With his cohorts Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists, Erosion) on drums and Brian Cook (Russian Circles) on bass, Turner has dissolved the rigid forms of heavy music, searching for a balance between disciplined precision and unhinged musical barbarism, crafting music that vacillates between meticulously detailed instrumentation and uninhibited forays into oblique abstraction. For American Dollar Bill - Keep Facing Sideways, You’re Too Hideous To Look At Face On, Keiji Haino and SUMAC met up in Tokyo’s Goksound recording studio to track a series of unrehearsed, completely non-premeditated sessions. Captured across several reels of tape, the collaboration harnessed Haino’s tension-inducing use of empty space on songs like “I’m over 137% a love junkie, and it’s still not enough” while pushing SUMAC’s dissident metal vocabulary on “What have I done (I was reeling in something white...)”. Throughout the course of its hour-plus length, American Dollar Bill pushes and pulls at the strictures of metal and bends the stylistic formalities of improvised music to create a sonic purge unencumbered by convention.

About In the years following the World War Two, Japan developed one of the most insatiable, dynamic and diverse markets for jazz. For a crucial period of little over a decade - from the late 1960s to the early 1980s Japanese jazz culture progressed at an astonishing rate, producing an extraordinary array of artists, recordings and record labels that created some of the most forward thinking and impressive jazz to be committed to tape. This amazing journey is explored on ‘J Jazz’. This compilation from BBE uncovers some of the most sought after and rare material from this period and pulls together key artists who shaped the post-war modern jazz scene in Japan. ‘J Jazz' includes obscure and sought after rarities like the bass-driven power jazz of Koichi Matsukaze’s ‘Earth Mother’, the holy grail rarity of Aizawa Tohru Quartet’s ‘Dead Letter’ and the loping majesty of Takeo Moriyama’s ‘North Wind’. Comprised of 21-year-olds Estrella Sanchez (vocals & guitar) and Amor Amezcua (drums & synths), Mint Field’s sound is organic, spacious, and inhabited by specters that lurk behind rhythms, where Estrella’s angelic voice evokes a supernatural world of beauty and melancholy. Their new record, Pasar De Las Luces, first for LA-based Innovative Leisure Records, is “a compilation of our lives from two years ago to now” says the band. Since recording an initial EP in 2015 in their hometown of Tijuana, Mint Field have played Coachella, SXSW and have extensively toured the US and Mexico. In the summer of 2017 the band traveled to Detroit to record with producer Christopher Koltay. “We had a much clearer idea of what we wanted and we had the tools to make it. When we recorded [our debut EP] Primeras Salidas, it was a homemade album and we didn't know what we were doing.” This time, they managed to channel their inspirations and influences to transmit sentiments of profound sorrow, nostalgia and immaculate beauty...revisiting sounds from the past to make them contemporary. Mint Field’s vision comes alive on Pasar De Las Luces ‘s 13 immaculate tracks that nod to everything from dream pop to fuzz-saturated shoegaze. Album opener “El Parque Parecía No Tener Fin,” is a melodic number with haunting melodic lines where we can appreciate their post-punk tendencies. “Ciudad Satélite” has woven harmonies and crescendos that detonate into a flurry of feelings anchored by a dramatic bassline. “Quiero Otoño De Nuevo” goes full krautrock and is like an introverted, reflective and delicate Neu!. ”Cambios Del Pasar” borrows the distorted and imperfect guitar sounds of ‘90s indie bands like Yo Lat Tengo. “Nada Es Estático y Evoluciona” develops from minimalism into a silent scream and “Club De Chicas” is probably the peppiest song of the bunch. Born out of a long solo road trip McClellan took in 2015, the songs map her emotions of the two year period in which they were written like a highway is laid out before its driver. With decent savings, she set off due west, keyboard laid across the backseat, with little plan other than a call ahead to some friends and the idea that playing shows along the way would be cool. Though the trip lasted only four months, McClellan continued bouncing around from New York to Omaha and back, until finally settling in NYC in January of 2017. It is fitting that these songs were conceived in a period of restlessness. McClellan’s singular voice mixes earnest intensity with nonchalant melancholy that puts the listener in a distant place, far away from other humans, as most of the subject matter deals with loneliness and internal emotional navigation. Often though, the songs stray outward and upward, pondering the confused nature of people, elaborating on the one thing we all cling to: the knowledge that no one is excluded from feeling weird sometimes.

A polished and atmospheric examination of missed connections and altered states, where the thrum of 21st century psychedelia meets European dance floor chic, Dana Buoy’s Ice Glitter Gold, is equal parts lusty and lysergic. Helmed by songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dana Janssen (Akron/Family) with long-time collaborator Justin Miller, Dana Buoy deliver a sweaty, late-night pop record with analogue 4 on the floor heartbeats throbbing at the center. The album opens with the euphoric primal thump of “Twisted Sky,” where thick bass entwines with bombastic drums alongside melodic, brightly layered vocals. The title track “Ice Glitter Gold” is a slinky after hours come-on, the sexy momentum grooves its way through louche and ephemeral moments transpiring in the dwindling night. Sprawling come downs like “Colors Out” rat-a-tat-tat with trappy triplet and doublet hi-hats, awash in gated reverb and guitar-heavy, blissed out psychic release. All the while still letting you down gently as in the minor key jet stream of “Let Go Awhile.” Written from the cold comfort of the Oregon coast, the blank canvas of the dark Pacific Ocean served as inspiration for a chilly and concise blend of French Touch inflected West Coast crunch, bolstered by moonlit variations on the tropicore pop heard on previous releases Summer Bodies and Preacher. The album was recorded in Portland and New York, with production by Janssen, John Morgan Askew and Abe Seiferth at Flora Recording & Playback, Scenic Burrows, and Transmitter Park Studios. Janssen and Miller’s digital/analog interplay creates its own language of crisp electronics and guitars, writhing together to create languid dance grooves that switch easily between moments of exuberant, open heartedness (“Too Early”), vulnerability (“Only One”) and woozy, hallucinatory introspection (“Let Go Awhile”). With eight songs, Dana Buoy leaves behind a neon lit, self-aware paper trail, following the heartbreak, disconnection and happiness of a modern man. Moogs, Dreadbox synths, chiming guitars and the taut groove carry a guarded, of the moment (but weirdly-not-cynical) series of elegantly conceived tales: love lost, never gained or just poorly timed. Satisfaction always seems to be just out of reach, but all of these experiences become revelatory rather than crushing; somehow eking out a profound positivity that only leads further down the path of enlightenment by the time the party’s over. Love missed. Self-discovery achieved. Repeat. Ice Glitter Gold excels in constructing whole-hearted experiments in melody that are fully fleshed out but don’t meander. Street Date: February 23 | 2018 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE In 1987, Rafael Toral began making his own compositions and solo recordings. 30 years later, these recordings sound remarkably prescient and perfectly timeless — almost fresher today than when they were first released. Rafael has spent the time since then developing his conceptions, with continued explorations in the many records that have followed. On the 30th anniversary of his start, we are reissuing Sound Mind Sound Body and Wave Field, his first two long out-of-print albums, on vinyl for the first time. Sound Mind Sound Body was partly inspired by exploring some of the working principles of Brian Eno and Robert Fripp, extrapolated by Rafael via a unique signal path leading out of his guitar. He paid notice to the massive impact of discreet gestures, creating slow-moving tones and spacious orchestral resonances, drifting and droning with glacial majesty, hardly recognizable as guitar much of the time. The first of these pieces were recorded in 1987, and in 1994, they were released on Portugal’s AnAnAnA, with material evolved in the years between, producing a remarkable equilibrium over an hour’s listening. Further evidence of the necessity for gradual development exists in subsequent reissues: for the 1998 Moikai reissue, “AE 1” was recorded, and for this edition, “AER
7 E” was rerecorded and the material for “AE 2” was recorded for the first time ever — all from original processes as noted, and none of which will cause the listener to notice a change in the otherworldly atmosphere. Wave Field, released in 1995, was a departure from the first album into new composition methods involving the dirty textures of rock guitar, sounding in the open ears of many listeners (like Jim O’Rourke, who issued the disc in the US on dexter’s cigar) as a synthesis of disparate elements — a nexus where Alvin Lucier, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and Eno blend together. Here, the clangorous potential of the guitar was emphasized, giving a metallic edge to the two extended pieces and “radio edit” coda. The jacket paid subtle tribute to My Bloody Valentine, which, along with the radio edit, suggested a harmony between musical directions as wildly disparate as minimalist experimental and rock. Today, such a paradoxical intent is more widely considered as a part of the artist’s purview. This allows the sounds of Wave Field and Sound Mind Sound Body to sit perfectly among the forwardreaching music of today — as it continues to evolve in our ears, moving ever towards the next conception of listening space.

It’s no secret that we’re partial to the flourishing NYC metal scene, having worked with numerous bands from the city. There seems to be an overwhelming concentration of creative energy coming from the region, and we love being a part of what’s happening there. Pyrolatrous was formed in 2012 by Nicholas Palmirotto (also of HULL), who wrote and recorded 3 songs with Joel Stallings (also of Radiation Blackbody/Defeatist) on drums. The project took a backseat to HULL due to touring schedules, but was then revived in 2015 after HULL disbanded. Together, Palmirotto and Weinstein completed writing and recording Teneral. Following the completion of the album, the remainder of the lineup was solidified with the inclusion of Nolan Voss (guitar, also of Anicon), and Joe Merolla (bass). Teneral is a densely crafted album, both thematically and musically. A great deal of Pyrolatrous’ style is influenced by classic black and death metal, utilizing both sweeping, blasting tremolo passages and powerfully technical riff / percussion interplay. Although on Teneral Palmirotto and Weinstein elevate each of the album’s nine movements beyond what has become expected of the standard blackened death composition through their extensive experience and considerable skill. On a lyrical level the album touches on topics personal and social, but throughout they maintain a commonality in their observation of life, existence, and the human experience interacting with both ones self and the machinations of society.

Eneferens will be typecast as atmospheric black metal protagonists, but theirs is a more complex, nuanced style that embraces not only the epic, Cascadian fare that Wolves in the Throne Room pioneered, but also at times the mournful, heart on the sleeve doom that Patrick Walker has made his own, via Warning and 40 Watt Sun. Guitar lines crush, shimmer and tease in equal measure, while it is scarcely believable that all of the voices, ethereal, growled and haunted originate from the throat of sole protagonist Jori Apedaile – who also plays every instrument on the album. Eneferens exist in a realm where sun-beaten deserts and white hot alabaster above give way to frostbitten tundra, in the hours beneath. Theirs is a music of contrasts, with heart-breaking beauty sandwiched between melody and the harsh, ominous sounds of a world in ruins. BIOGRAPHY: Eneferens manifested into the solo project of Jori Apedaile in January of 2016 in Missoula, MT. Tracks were written and recorded during the early months of the year initially to serve as live performance material. The tracks were later independently released on August 8th as Eneferens’ debut album, “The Inward Cold.” Writing for a new record began immediately after its release, and within only another three months, “In The Hours Beneath” was completed and released on the first day of December. The name “Eneferens” came to Jori in a dream on a winter’s night in 2015, meaning “to carry within one’s self.” The name embodies precisely what the content of the music portrays. Through the inspiration of the beauty of nature and self-reflection on the human experience, a delicate chemistry of beauty, struggle, and triumph is born. Subtle Degrees ‘A Dance That Empties’ Vinyl LP New duo recording from saxophonist Travis Laplante (Battle Trance) & drummer Gerald Cleaver
A Dance That Empties is the culmination of a very long musical relationship. In 2001, when he was only 18 years old, Laplante played a concert at New York’s Knitting Factory, then a pre-eminent mecca for adventurous music of all kinds. Cleaver was in the audience, and came up to Laplante afterwards, handed him his phone number and said they should play together sometime. They soon did, “and I felt a very intimate and spiritual connection with Gerald that feels more alive than ever today,” Laplante says. “I’ve learned a tremendous amount from Gerald and have long considered him one of my favorite living improvisers.” The two have performed together various times over the ensuing 17 years, but Laplante never felt he was quite ready to record with Cleaver. “It got to the point where I took a multiple-year break from playing with him because I felt like I didn’t have enough to bring to the table,” says Laplante. “I needed to practice so I could have more to give to our musical relationship.” Then, in the fall of 2016, Laplante received a commission to compose a piece to be performed at Roulette in Brooklyn the following spring. “I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to return to this relationship with Gerald.” And so Laplante began composing an epic-scale work with Cleaver’s rhythmic virtuosity in mind.

Inspired by the longer durational forms of spiritual ceremonies, A Dance That Empties is a continuous journey that unfolds over 43 minutes, with musical motifs that foreshadow, recur, and evolve. The piece refines sonic territory that Laplante has pioneered in his celebrated saxophone quartet Battle Trance, as well as his solo saxophone work, utilizing long passages of circular breathing and other extended techniques to create specific and yet ineffable emotional and sonic resonances. A Dance That Empties, as the title implies, adds the distinctly new element of complex rhythmic pulses precisely and expressively executed by Cleaver, that compel listeners to lose themselves in the hypnotically repetitive yet subtly shifting grooves. With A Dance That Empties, Laplante and Cleaver throw themselves into unknown territory, delving further into the devotional intensity that has long distinguished both their work. ADT’s dense performances flow through contrasting moods and varied textural landscapes, as individual instrumental voices seize the reins for moments at a time and collide with standing harmonies and electronic shapes before slipping back into the chaos below. At any given turn, ADT’s torrent of sound defies genre conventions and expectations of resolution or complication. Adam TramGrateful Dead, Albert Ayler, Hawkwind, PSF Records posh’s keyboard lays out a fluctuating series of complex chords and twinkling electric organ leads that color the open spaces and surge to the forefront of the mix in bursts of quivering activity. Jake Acosta’s searing electric guitar performances melt into swathes of mutated harmony and fierce, clean-toned twang. He channels the cascading melodic dervishes of John McLaughlin as much as the effect-blasted explorations of Pete Cosey. Kyle Drouin’s synths and electronics serve as a wild card within an otherwise traditional arsenal of “jazz” instrumentation. His washes of drone texture, peals of static noise, and consonant synth figures swirl around and within each jam, both as a foil to other voices and as a connective agent. Taken all together, we hear ADT make group decisions on the fly and flow through sessions whose unique logic and structures refuse to settle for anything less than total stimulation.
