OVERVIEW The Kills have compiled an extraordinary career spanning b-sides and rarities album titled, appropriately, Little Bastards. The songs date back from the band’s first 7-inch singles in 2002 through to 2009. All of the material has been newly remastered for release on 2 x LP, CD & Digital and marks the first ever vinyl pressing for some of these tracks. First ignited over trans-Atlantic mixtapes shared between two kindred spirits at the turn of the Millennium, the past two decades have seen The Kills master a savage balance, unleashing artful detonation and subtle vocal and guitar violence. For as far apart as these places may seem, you would never know it from the sound of Plastic Bouquet, the debut collaborative album between Saskatoon duo Kacy & Clayton and Christchurch singer and songwriter Marlon Williams. ▶ Beggars Arkive is happy to announce a 30th anniversary vinyl reissue of FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM’S third highly acclaimed album Elizium, released by Beggars Banquet in 1990. Recorded and produced by Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson, the audio is via analogue transfer to 96khz/24 bit by John Dent at Loud, with vinyl mastering by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road. Pressed on dark green 180g vinyl. Formed in 1984, Fields of the Nephilim is the creation of vocalist and front man Carl McCoy. Highly influential, especially in the world of goth, but also within the metal and electronic genres, their legacy endures to this day. You can hear their influence on bands like Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, Wolves in The Throne Room, Behemoth and more. The band’s unique sound, an apocalyptic fusion of Victorian underworld meets Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western, had an appearance to match (wide-brimmed hats, long duster coats and cowboy boots, usually black and smothered in white flour as a substitute for dust), and set them apart from their contemporaries.
In a recent article on them, Popmatters wrote, “Named for a Biblical race of destructive giants born of human women and rebel angels, Fields of the Nephilim instead offered tightly forged cinematic vignettes crowded with graveyard atmosphere and crackling with analogue warmth. Their sound welded goth’s flair for delicacy and theatrics with an undercurrent of metal’s menace, crowned by frontman Carl McCoy’s serrated baritone.” Elizium is one of their most beautiful albums and considered by many to be their best. As The Quietus wrote, “it was both their most accessible and their most experimental work, concluding and consolidating the Nephilim’s fiveyear shamanic journey. Lead-off single and opening track ‘For Her Light’ featured a lengthy mid-section that anticipated the apocalyptic post-rock of Godspeed! The band came into being when a young trumpet player named Daram Karanga offered to assemble a group to entertain the workers at a copper mine in the Zimbabwean town of Mhangura. Wooden Shjips, long-time leaders of the contemporary psychedelic movement, expand their sound with V. On their fifth album the quartet of Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo), Omar Ahsanuddin, Dusty Jermier, and Nash Whalen augment their already rich sound with laid back, classic summer songs. Inspired by the tumult of the modern world, and the desire to offer a contrasting vision of peace, the band has created a record that filters their trademark hypnotic grooves through an optimistic lens, resulting in music that is bright and vital. Each song shimmers with a distinctly Wooden Shjips sound, a relaxed summer vibe. This was a conscious choice, an atmospheric goal that influenced nearly every detail: the tones, the delay types and reverbs used, as well as the synthesizer elements that color the songs. The Sea and Cake deliver an album with the freshness and energy of a new band, and the ease and musicianship that can only come with experience. Runner began as the companion piece to 2011’s The Moonlight Butterfly, and using that album’s sonic experimentations as a starting point for a new process of writing and recording, became something completely new. Songs that began as synthesizer experiments in Sam Prekop’s home studio were reimagined by the other members, and eventually recorded and mixed by John McEntire at Chicago’s Soma Studios. The result is an album that feels like a private travelogue. Start listening at one place, and end up some place else. Cherishing the unexpected mysteries around every corner. From Sam Prekop: “Normally I would ignore past efforts when writing something new, but this felt different, The Moonlight Butterfly was ripe for expansion. Keeping the butterfly in mind focused a direction and provided a good jumping off point. Between The Moonlight Butterfly and Runner, I wrote and recorded a soundtrack for a film called Pavilion. It was absolutely wonderful for a while not to know what I was doing, but working still, scrambling with purpose. I truly felt free to try almost anything. in completing a picture with sound, trying to record a nuance, the particulars became huge - to render a space, describe a time, follow a spell. Reaching in this direction has definitely informed the new record. I was interested in writing songs that started not with guitar but with synthesizer/sequencer ideas. The modular synth parts didn’t always make it through to the final recordings, but the influence is still there. On “Harps” for instance, that melody and structure could not have happened if I hadn’t played off the sequencer right at the beginning. Having the pieces start in my home studio, I became quite cavalier with them, painting with a new fat sloppy brush. The songs were feeling pleasantly out of control and I was hearing music unlike other material I had come up with before. The Sea and Cake worked remotely for quite a while on Runner. As a result, what the band brought was more reactionary, impulsive, since the foundation was already there. The pieces seemed able to absorb a new kind of risk taking. It was fascinating to hand over almost complete works and have the other members of the band have at it, rip up, reconfigure, reconsider. Just when I felt I couldn’t go further on a song, someone in the band would change it forever. I firmly believe in taking cues and direction as the material evolves. I’m never one to impose preconceptions on a record and feel the most interesting work is found, rather than predetermined.”

The great majority of artists spend their formative years (if not their entire careers) working to shake off the gravitational pull of their predecessors, and the many masters and masterpieces that came before them—what the literary critic Harold Bloom called “the anxiety of influence.” For musicians, in particular, this tendency is especially pronounced, for reasons having to do with the nature of their craft and materials. Unlike the contemporary novelist or filmmaker, say, there is presumably a finite number of choices remaining to the artist making music in the 21st century that have not yet been exhaustively mined after 500 years of popular and semi-popular song. It is for this reason that, when we are asked to describe what a piece of music sounds like, we inevitably talk not about the thing itself, but resort to the trope of metaphor or analogy—“a little Brian Wilson, a little Pink Floyd, a little bit of Kraftwerk.” Rare indeed is the artist who outgrows their early influences, and instead become one of the markers by which other groups are measured. Almost alone among bands of the last two decades, Tortoise is a group that resists easy metaphors and analogies, who can be described as sounding like only themselves and no one else. Twenty years after its founding, the band’s signature and singularly inimitable sound—a fluid intersection of dub, dance, jazz, techno, rock, and classical minimalism, with no part overwhelming or dominating the whole—remains an American and international original. Even more unusually, they seem to have arrived at their sound with almost no apprenticeship to speak of; to judge from their early singles and albums alone, they seem to have come into being with their musical identity and DNA fully formed, like Athena from the forehead of Zeus. Further, while the group has spawned countless imitators, heirs, and followers—sincere, flattering, and otherwise—Tortoise remains unique in the world of contemporary music for their boundless intellectual curiosity, their unmistakable compositional voice, and their synthesis of seemingly contradictory sound worlds far from their doorstep. Beacons of Ancestorship is Tortoise’s sixth full-length album, and their first release of new material in five years, since 2004’s It’s All Around You. In the interim, the group also released and toured behind the 2006 career retrospective box set A Lazarus Taxon, and an album of covers with vocalist Will Oldham by the likes of Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, and The Minutemen, entitled The Brave and the Bold. Additionally, the individual members have kept busy with various other projects, including but not limited to Exploding Star Orchestra, Bumps, Fflashlights, and Powerhouse Sound.
A characteristic Tortoise album is one that traverses an encyclopedia of styles and reference points, a document of where musical intersections and dialogue are occurring at a given moment in time. Beacons of Ancestorship is no different, with nods to techno, punk, electro, lo-fi noise, cut-up beats, heavily processed synths, and mournful, elegiac dirges. We see these ideas working out in compositions like “High Class Slim Came Floatin’ In,” an eight-minute track which playfully references the world of ecstatic rave and dance culture with a curiously ambivalent, multi-part suite overlaid with robotic, machinesounding melodies that stop and start in several different time signatures before the song’s ultimate resolution; and again in “Yinxianghechengqi,” which begins as a straightforward uptempo math-rocker before steadily accelerating into a wall of fuzzy atonal sqwonk. There are many moods, styles, and modes in the Tortoise songbook, of course—often, in the course of a single composition. Consistent throughout, however, is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. (Think Robert Altman versus Robert Plant.) In the same sense that the string quartet and all small-ensemble chamber music can be thought of as an intelligent conversation among equals—violins, viola, and cello taking turns, expressing opinions, joining voices and then coming apart, as also occurs in elevated discourse—so, too, the calling card of a Tortoise song is the experience of a sound being worked out as a conversation among the individual and interrelated parts—of an ensemble thinking collectively and in group dynamics through the expression of a multi-layered musical thought.

These album covers have rarely been seen (nor heard) outside of Cuba and show a rich previously hidden history of both music and design. ‘Cuba: Music and Revolution’ is the first ever book about Cuban record sleeve design and has been five years in the making, made in full co-operation with the Cuban government. The record sleeve designs reflect both the rich cultural Latin musical legacy of Cuba, as well as the political and aesthetic influence of revolutionary Communism, which manifests itself both in the music created on the island and the artwork of the designs included here. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the United States imposed a trade embargo which exists to this day, and as a consequence the many 100s of Cuban records featured here have rarely been seen outside of Cuba. The book is edited and compiled by Gilles Peterson, BBC broadcaster, record label owner, DJ, record collector, founder of Worldwide FM and Stuart Baker, founder of Soul Jazz Records. Together they have edited two earlier critically-acclaimed music and design books ‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound – Revolutionary Jazz Cover Art 1965-83’ and ‘Bossa Nova and The Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s’. In conjunction with the deluxe book, Soul Jazz Records will be releasing an album also compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker, charting the rise of Cuban music in the 1970s and featuring many of the artists who appear in this book. Despite being recorded in three segments, "Anthropomorphic" is a coherent single entity and is based on a plan, like all the TMFDC improv sessions. Always activating different talents of its many members, no album of TMFDC or their studio counterpart TKDE resembles the other, and "Anthropomorphic" makes no exception.

After thousands of shows and too many wasted nights out on the road, Austin singer Kelsey Wilson (of the band Wild Child) started to love herself enough to admit an ugly truth: so many of her beloved collaborations produced heartbreakingly beautiful songs that had nothing to do with her own story. “I’ve done so many co-writes in the last ten years, made music with and for all kinds of people,” Wilson says. “It was time to find my own voice and to make music that made me feel good.” The result: Wilson’s Motown-influenced, genre-bending solo-debut EP Bitch released under her acid-trip inspired stage name: Sir Woman. “I wrote a lot of these Sir Woman songs when my life was out of control. I was stuck in a perpetual party with the ultimate excuse of being an artist. I was so tired of the “sad suffering songwriter” routine, spending all of this time and energy finding inspiration in being hurt so I could pour more love songs into other people.” So, Wilson started writing songs for herself. Wilson’s first single, “Highroad,” came to her in a dream in a fleabag hotel somewhere in Colorado. Wilson shook-off a hangover, transcribed the “lyrical message” from her subconscious verbatim, and recorded the chorus melody on her phone: If there’s something baby, you should let ‘em all know. It’s not giving in when you’re letting go. If you’re thinking about taking the highroad. I can tell you you’re doing it wrong. There’s a better way of letting it all go. Because you’ve been running from the feeling too long “’ “’Highroad’ is a goodbye to my old relationship with myself and my music. I couldn’t take center stage comfortably, and didn’t believe in myself enough to take charge of the music I was writing.” she says. “The music that I listen to has always been so empowering, I needed to make something myself that could give me that same feeling.” Wilson recorded the songs at Echo Lab in Denton, Texas with producer Matt Pence (Elle King, Shakey Graves) and Jason Burt (Modern Medicine Revival) co-producing a few of the tracks, and making beats for the record. Sir Woman’s backing band — drummer Amber Baker (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Lunar Rae) and back-up singers Spice and Roy Jr. of Lunar Rae — were joined on the recordings by O guitarist Nik Lee and multi-instrumentalist Dan Creamer of The Texas Gentlemen, and acclaimed country-pop artist Robert Ellis. Wild Child rhythm section Tom Myers (drums) and Taylor Craft (bass) also played on the record, with Craft co-writing some of the tunes and working on the musical arrangements with Wilson. “Everyone on this record is someone who I met on the road, and they are amazing. I had been admiring each of them for such a long time. We recorded almost everything live in the same room. It was such a big family vibe,” Wilson says. “This record is me finding what makes me feel good and falling in love with myself. A mix of everything that makes my body move — pop, soul, gospel, funk, folk, and R&B. It feels so right to make a record that has my actual heart in it. Sir Woman is the part of me that wants to help people fall in love with themselves through music. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.

For his first album as bandleader in six years, Citerman generously offers a nine-part song cycle followed by the ambitious 23-minute “Future Generations (Doyrus Fun Der Tsukunft).” Beside his nimble and idiosyncratic guitar work, Berkson and Serpa’s voices dance, soar and sometimes erupt. Meticulously recorded, mixed and mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Damon Whittemore, “Bop Kabbalah+Voices…” looks to both the past for inspiration and the future (“When You Speak of Times to Come…”) for creative visioning - may this music inspire listeners to imagine and join the organized struggle for a more just, humane world. A portion of all profits will help support the immigrant justice work of New Sanctuary Coalition. Ty Citerman is a Brooklyn, NY-based guitarist, composer and bandleader who writes, performs and teaches music across the spectrum of jazz, rock and contemporary classical. He is a founding member of the irreverent chamber jazz quartet Gutbucket; he leads the radical Jewish ensemble Bop Kabbalah; and he writes chamber music that’s been performed by JACK Quartet, AntiSocial Music, Sara Schoenbeck and Bearthoven. He’s performed at dozens of prestigious festivals around the world including Jazz Saalfelden, Jazz a Vienne, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and the Paris Jazz Festival. Guitar Player called Ty's music for Gutbucket "kinetic punk jazz opuses" that “reveal an explosive concoction containing lethal doses of Ornette Coleman, King Crimson, John Zorn, Black Sabbath, Stravinsky, and Fugazi,” and JazzTimes called “Bop Kabbalah” (2014) “…one of the year’s most arresting recordings…” Ty is the proud recipient of a 2018 Brooklyn Arts Council grant to support the creation, performance and recording of a portion of the music featured on this recording.

Blake Scott is a musician and songwriter from Melbourne and better known as a member of Australian three-piece The Peep Tempel. Blake now steps out to release his debut studio album Niscitam. Blake partnered with multi-instrumentalist and engineer John Lee to produce the album at Phaedra Studios in Melbourne with musicians Jacey Ashton and Nick Finch. It remains voluminous and bold in arrangement, whilst taking a more introspective path lyrically. The album explores fantasy and memory, existential angst, and is the artist’s attempt to reconcile febrile hopes for a just and peaceful world against the wild and cataclysmic buffet before him. The result is a musical salve for those enduring the pressures and mundanity of modern life against a backdrop of utopian dreams.

In April 2020, Thundercat released “It Is What It Is” featuring musical contributions from Flying Lotus, Childish Gambino, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington, BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole, Zack Fox, Ty Dolla $ign and Lil B. The latter pair graced the single ‘Fair Chance’, a song that reflected a more sombre side to the album and was explicitly dedicated to the memory of Mac Miller who tragically passed away in 2018. This is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ ground-breaking Deutsche Elektronische Musik series, ‘a near-definitive guide to some of the world's most extraordinary music’ (The Guardian). This new Soul Jazz release features many of the classic German electronic and Krautrock groups from the 1970s & 80s – including Can, Amon Düül II, Harmonia, Conrad Schnitzler, Agitation Free, Roedelius – as well as a host of lesser known artists such as Dzyan, Klaus Weiss, Gruppe Between and many more. Deutsche Elektronische rarities unearthed on the album include Kalacakra (whose fan-base included the great Moondog!) and their superb ‘Nearby Shiras,’ taken from their super-rare spiritual/psychedelic private press concept album Crawling to Lhasa, from 1972. The Bug aka Kevin Martin, and producer/vocalist Dis Fig aka Felicia Chen, refer to their style on ‘In Blue’ as “Tunnel Sound”; a foggy, melancholic meltdown of narco-dancehall-soul and dread-drenched, electronic dub. The 2018 prototype rhythms for this album were a continuation of Martin’s ongoing quest for a futuristic dancehall mutation, but more sci-fi, aquatic and smokey than before. An obsessive search for the right sultry 2AM voice to ride his syncopated walls of sub, fuzzed out white noise and infinite echoes eventually led him to Dis Fig’s torched soul-jazz glow, and 20 months of subsequent lab exchanges have resulted in the deeply sensual pulsations and lyrical long shadows of ‘In Blue’ - an album that shares shades of King Midas Sound’s wrecked lovers rock, alongside the bass immersion that The Bug has become infamously known for. Just as Martin took a stylistic swerve on ‘In Blue’, so did Chen. Previously known for experimental noise onslaughts and emotional exorcisms, she opts here for threatening intimacy and hushed confessionals, concentrating on bittersweet vocals and seductive surprises that are all the more potent for their inferred narratives and delicate delivery. Mixed during lockdown, the sense of claustrofear, escapism and tension throughout is palpable. With the bewitching croon of Dis Fig directing the flow, carnality and violence merge under the turbulent, cinematic surface of an hypnotically addictive album.
