When and where did the label begin?

The label was started by my friend Bob Irwin and his wife Mary, out of their house in Cox sackie, NY in 1989. First release was a Knickerbockers album.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

Bob and Mary came up with it essentially by putting words together that they liked. 30 years later Mary told me she regretted it because of all the times she’s had to say “No, not Sundays, Sunda zed.” Bob and I chose Modern Harmonic. It was his idea really, taken from an old music book on modern harmonic musical theory. I think it was the first idea we both loved so it stuck.

How has the label changed since it started?

While staying true to its roots as an archival music label, we’ve kept Sundazed (as an imprint) true to form largely focused on psych, surf, & sixties, but have worked to generate other brands following the Sundazed blueprint, like Modern Harmonic which is sort of Sundazed’s eccentric sibling with jazz, avant garde and just plain weird stuff, BeatRocket focused largely on garage, Americana Anthropology, and most recently Dot Matrix focused on treasures from the more recent past.

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic? Trying to accurately project demand. Early on demand went through the roof so our manu facturing quantities went up, then by the time the titles came back from production things had leveled out. We adjusted, then it changed, we’re just trying to get the numbers right and trying to make sure that we’re only sending titles to production that are worthy of the precious capacity that’s available. We feel like we’ve got the handle on it, but ask us again in a few months.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?

Not necessarily. We’re US based and do all of our manufacturing in the US (jackets in Canada) trying to keep our carbon footprint as small as a vinyl based label can be. We’re even manufacturing close to Redeye now to help that and give the records less time in a hot truck. We love to dabble in other territories though, most recently doing a couple titles from Autour de Lucie (on our Dot Matrix label) who’re from France. We explored making some of the albums there but at this point have kept it all with one plant.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?

We always like to say that we find the best stuff while we’re looking for something else. We try to be aggregators and love to get suggestions from fans, friends, stores, other artists, it’s a little bit of everywhere. Mind you most of the ideas that come in are things that haven’t been reissued for a reason or carry some sort of major hurdle. We’re far from the smartest folks in the room, we just try to be the best listeners when the ideas come… then we search them out and often find something else. If you just live in it you swim in it.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

I think (and to a certain extent hope) that when folks think of Sundazed they immediately think surf, psych, & sitars, but we hope to mix it as we try to earn that same level of brand loyalty to Americana Anthropology, Dot Matrix, BeatRocket, and Modern Harmonic. How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?

I think our goal remains the same, have fun and help others have fun by filling holes in our collective collections, whether it’s providing an affordable version of a record that most can’t afford an original of or unearthing something special like our Id or Colin Blunstone bonus albums that we didn’t even know we needed until we knew they existed.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why? I’ll actually answer it honestly. While they’re all special, our work with outsider artist Jerry Solomon has been really special to us. He sends us thank you notes for every check he re ceives. It’s way out there stuff so no one’s getting rich off of it but it’s the big titles that allow us to be art dealers and turn people onto his music. Getting checks to artists and estates is one of my favorite things. A career personal highlight that made us zero money was helping Jill Costanzo (daughter of Jack “Mr. Bongo” Costanzo) get a $70k check from Universal for royalties she wasn’t aware of. But they’re all fun, we’re just lucky to be doing what we do and when we do it well it’s great to make others happy.

What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release? A front runner would be having Wayne Coyne in my kitchen filling hollow records with real blood from a syringe. Two great quotes came from it: 1) Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros will be Fedexing their blood to your house. 2) (while injecting some Coldplay blood into a record) “Wow, even Chis Martin’s blood has cheese in it.” This was when I was working for a pressing plant who refused to let Wayne fill these there.

If you had the budget, what would be your dream “outside-the-box” or “cross over” marketing campaign?

I’d love to get an electronics company to start making affordable consumer quarter inch tape machines again and start getting our catalog out on reel to reel. They don’t warp, they don’t scratch, no bent corners, and they sound amazing. I’d love to help launch the reel resurgence. Or maybe start making records on corn based plastics. It was explored before but that indus try realized there was more money to be made focusing on cosmetics containers. But maybe one day. I’ll settle for making Bob Irwin’s dream of a comp called Close But No Tequila a reality. A comp of about 40 minutes of ripoffs of the song “Tequila” (but omit the original). Then we’d put an ad for Petrón or Casamigos on the back and make them pay for it. Sorry, I have trouble thinking “big budget.”

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?

Thank you for asking! As a guy who spent almost 10 years working at a pressing plant, I feel black vinyl and color vinyl sound the same (when done right) but if you had to make a case for one I’d say color vinyl sounds better because having one solid (non-mixed) color is about the only way to guarantee that the material is virgin material. The black vinyl almost always contains regrind (and should) but if you get a single color record, they’d almost always have to use 100% virgin material as it’s next to impossible to regrind colors separately (aka prevent cross contamination). That’s why plants do randomly mixed vinyl and things of that nature to get rid of the color regrind. Other than that, the modern compounds are pretty much identical.

One of my favorite packages we’ve done, while simple and subtle, was our Moon Express package. It was printed on the reverse board with a diecut window which only went through one layer of the jacket. We printed on both sides of the jacket so the contents of that window was the inside and had the glossier sheen. It’s hard to explain but very cool and unique. It’s also an amazing record especially if you like sitar. We’ve got some deluxe Sun Ra plans in the works for our reissue of the film Space Is The Place LP + film and the early plans are delight fully absurd!

Forget about the vinyl boom - how are you and your label responding to the ever-increasing popularity of cassette tapes? CDs??

Yes! We never really left the CD. Generally speaking if we’re not doing CD on a title it’s be cause it’s a licensed title and we don’t have the rights to. People always reach out saying they wish we had, though. Bring on the reel to reel boom!!! (said with sarcasm free sincerity… would love that).

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

I think they’re very important. I’m not sure we’ve had many releases that focus solely on mental health but as a medicated individual it’s a very important topic and society needs to remove the stigma that makes people embarrassed to say they’re on meds. No one gets shamed for blood pressure medication, they shouldn’t get shamed for taking antidepres sants, anti-psychotics, hormones, whatever. If something makes someone get through their day and be happier in the process we should all celebrate that those things exist.

Social justice is super important to us. We’re really proud of our Nikki Giovani releases and to even be associated with someone like her who’s done so much and continues to be a powerful voice of change. Personally, as an archivist, I’m a huge fan of the Gil Scott Heron, Last Poets, and Sarah Webster Fabio’s of the world. Love a socially powerful album that gives you the chills. Nikki does that and we’re always looking for powerful music with a powerful message.

What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?

Oh that’s a tough one. Back in my day, we weren’t on email and we used to have to send mar keting wrap-ups via voicemail group codes. I remember when PolyGram started the push to use email one executive fought it because he couldn’t listen to his emails on the way home. I remember making flyers with a gluestick, a sheet of “mini’s” and a copier, almost com puter-free. As it relates to our business, I’d say it’s the the amount of reissues now and the amount of reissue labels. Everyone has one or is looking to start one. It’s great but strange.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

I love them all, nothing like collecting logo shirts from all over the country/globe. One that will always come to mind is Euclid Records in St. Louis. I remember my first interaction with them was over email as a consumer. I was shocked they had a record in stock on their site and asked if it was true (Va Va Voom by Cinerama) they confirmed it and we had pleasant email conversations that lead to them sending me a free tote bag. That meant a lot and kept me going back.

When I finally got to visit St. Louis (not their current location), I was offered to see the basement. I was amazed. It was like a whole other record store and more impressively they had every used record they had logged into inventory. So I rattled off a couple titles I’d already checked to see if they had in the bins and they punched them up and sure enough he had a second pressing of Louvin Brothers Satan Is Real and a minty copy of Sinatra’s Swingin’ Sessions. They were records at the time I’d never held and now I had them. I spent so much money that day. He also had a knack for traveling for collections rather than waiting to see what came in. But I love record stores. I wouldn’t be who I am without them. They’re my happy place.

They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered? Fun, irreverent, and well curated.

On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things, music scholarships in the Richmond area. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Patterson Hood ended up writing the song “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” about Bryan Harvey and his family.

BAUHAUS

TheSky’sGoneOut BurningFromTheInside

Formed in 1978, The legendary and hugely influential Bauhaus is comprised of Peter Murphy, Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins. The dark, dramatic mu sic that they made, possessed far more force, variety and playfulness than the “founding fathers of goth” tag that is always attached to them.

Bauhaus’ landmark debut album, In the Flat Field, came out towards the end of 4AD’s first eventful year. Following the plan at the time, the band then “moved upstairs” to Beggars Banquet, for whom they cut three further albums before dissolving in 1983. They charted with their cover of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”, and they’ve been name checked by everyone from Nine Inch Nails, Sep ultura, Janes Addiction, MGMT, Interpol, Bjork, Nirvana and more. They remain a huge cult concern, periodically reforming to wow their legions of dedicated followers.

The Sky’s Gone Out is the band’s third album and was released in 1982. It was mastered from HD audio files transferred from the original tapes.

For Fans Of: BADBADNOTGOOD, Makaya McCraven, Shabaka Hutchings, Sons of Kemet, Pharoah Sanders, Emma-Jean Thackery, Moses Boyd, Kamasi Washington, Alice Coltrane, Kenny Dorham, Ezra Collective, Theon Cross

Some of the greatest artists in the 20th century have been multi-instrumentalists – cue Prince, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Todd Rundgren and Paul McCartney. That expansive understanding of composition, technique and sound changes how artists approach musicians has inspired Leland Whitty’s approach on his new record Anyhow. BADBADNOTGOOD’s Leland Whitty has also worked with artists including Charlotte Day Wilson, Kali Uchis, Kendrick Lamar, Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Earl Sweatshirt, and Kaytranada.

Whitty’s current solo project is a departure from the improvisation focused collaborative band that has made his name. Anyhow began in 2020 after Whitty had finished working on several film score projects including Disappearance at Clifton Hill (Albert Shin) and Learn to Swim (Thyrone Tommy). That focus on narrative fed into his own work, which combined elements of cinematic composition with jazz and rock like he has created in the past.

His latest album Anyhow features Whitty on guitar, synthesizer, woodwinds, production, composition and strings. Narrative is built into each of Whitty’s tracks in some way. Rather than a specific story, he drew from photographic or cinematic sources. The aim was for the production and arrangement to imply the kind of structural narrative found in jazz improvisation. Whitty’s compositions emerged from voice notes and short loops, for example guitar riffs that he would feed into Ableton and flesh out into larger arrangements.

BadBadNotGood’s Alex and Chester were also guests on the album, alongside other friends and notably Whitty’s older brother, Lowell – which Leland credits as being a central musical inspiration in his life. This is the first time they had the chance to fully work together. Whitty built the album from small excerpts rather than have a more rigid intellectual compositional technique. He would envision the whole scope of a song, asking friends to contribute to shift each tracks’ rhythm and energy. Whitty’s role was both performer, composer and in some way a director, asking contributors to execute in an organic way and editing the results.

Whitty’s influences include numerous jazz musicians, from Wayne Shorter to John Coltrane. However, the inspirations for Anyhow were library records and arrangers like David Axelrod, Gary McFarland, Arthur Verocai and Brian Bennett. Contemporary composers - notably Jon Brion and Jonny Greenwood – were also strong stimuli for the scope of sound that feels personal and cinematic at the same time.

The layered result is very much a studio-based experience, creating a very particular sense of intimacy as a result. The track titles also have a focus on intimacy and emotion – Svalbard referencing ideas of physical isolation, for example. The album title, Anyhow, references Whitty’s do-it-yourself approach to composition, production and multi-instrument performance. The album is a look inward, expressing something personal – a reflection of the experience of music itself.

Composed in 1976 and studied by guitarists the world over, The Book of Heads is one of Zorn’s most popular and oft-performed compositions. Concentrated into 35 “heads” that can be used as jumping off points for improvisation, the score uses an hermetic language of meticulously notated sounds inspired by contemporary classical extended techniques, cartoons, film noir, Zen philosophy, and the idiosyncratic guitar languages of free improvisation via Chadbourne, Frith, Bailey et al.

Interpreted here by the madcap virtuoso they were originally created for: Eugene Chadbourne, they receive a passionate and creative interpretation—looser, wilder and more open than the textbook readings of James Moore and Marc Ribot. Vexingly entertaining, this curious release contains fifteen of the original 35 études: sixty minutes of the most gonzo music ever created for solo guitar!

TREVOR JONES & RANDY EDELMAN THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK

STREET DATE: December 9, 2022

iBarcoder Trial

Rare is the soundtrack that as time passes overshadows the film of which it was a part, but that’s what has happened in the years since the 1992 release of The Last of the Mohicans. Not that the film is any slouch; Michael Mann’s epic retelling of James Fenimore Cooper’s frontier tale is a cable TV fixture and more evidence that Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the great actors of our time. But the film’s music has emerged as easily one of the most popular scores of ‘90s cinema, with the “Main Title” in particular having become a part of our popular culture the same way as, say, the signature themes from Titanic, Star Wars, and other blockbusters. What makes it even more extraordinary is that the movie’s score emerged from postproduction turmoil as the work of two different composers, Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. Jones’ work is more of the traditional orchestral soundtrack ilk, Edelman’s has a more contemporary feel, but somehow it all fits, with the closing credit song “I Will Find You” by Clannad an added bonus. Long a bestselling soundtrack CD, we at Real Gone Music are releasing this revered soundtrack on vinyl in orange with black streaks “smoke and fire” vinyl limited to 1000 copies, inside a gatefold festooned with production stills. Guaranteed to get your blood stirring!

The story behind this album, which marked Jack Kerouac’s debut as a recording artist, is almost as fascinating (but not quite) as the performances it contains. Kerouac had completely bombed in his first set during a 1957 engagement at the Village Vanguard when TV personality, comedian, and musician Steve Allen volunteered to accompany him on piano during the second. The results were so impressive that legendary engineer Bob Thiele then brought the duo into the studio to record an album for Dot Records. In true, stream-of-consciousness, Beat fashion, the entire album was cut in one session with one take for each track, Allen’s piano weaving in and out and occasionally commenting on Kerouac’s verbal riffs to great effect. However, when Poetry for the Beat Generation was ready for release in March 1958, Randy Wood, the president of Dot Records, was appalled by the then-daring language and subject matter and canceled the release…but not before 100 promo copies got out (and if you have one you’re set for life)! Thiele then left the company over the dispute and got the master tape in the bargain, which he finally released on the Hanover label which he founded with Allen in June 1959. That release still stands as one of the most momentous spoken word albums not just of the ‘50s but of all time…and we at Real Gone Music are proud to bring it to you in a milky clear vinyl version in Jack Kerouac’s 100th birthday year! of Blues”

Just like its predecessor, Poetry for the Beat Generation, legendary beatnik writer Jack Kerouac’s second album, Blues and Haikus, teamed him with producer Bob Thiele and came out on Thiele’s Hanover label in 1959. But this time around, instead of the debut’s inspired amateur jazz piano flourishes from Steve Allen, Kerouac insisted on bona fide jazz musicians to accompany his stream-of-consciousness prose. And boy, did he get them—big-time post-bop saxophonists Al Cohn and Zoot Sims made their bones in Woody Herman’s band, and here they provide effective counterpoint commentary to Kerouac’s readings. As for those who approach this release from a more literary angle, Blues and Haikus reflects Kerouac’s interest in Eastern religion and meditative practices as expressed in his novel The Dharma Bums as opposed to the more On the Road
Beat Generation. But

“The thing that's always set toe apart from its technically minded peers is its ability to tell short, concise stories — ecstatic, noodly, complex pop songs that unfold in less than five minutes.” -NPR

toe is a Japanese music group long revered in post-rock circles, while their song structures and dynamics have taken on elements from all styles of music, ranging from math-rock, jazz, pop, and R&B.

toe is composed of Kashikura Takashi on drums, Mino Takaaki on guitar, Yamane Satoshi on bass guitar, and Yamazaki Hirokazu on guitar. The band has formally played with this lineup since their inception in 1998.

The vast majority of the music is instrumental and features the swift, agile drumming of Takashi. The band is also known for melodic, clean guitar, often employing the juxtaposition of electric and acoustic. While the compositions feature the repetition of typical rock motifs, the subtle changes in beat and rhythm form a unique rhythmic dialect. The band has consistently expanded their sound throughout their musical tenure by incorporating singing, rhodes piano, mallet percussion, and electronic production elements.

Info:

An Insult to

the

Sport is a split offering from the genre de ant groups They are Gutting a Body of Water and A Country Western Elements of breakcore, shoegaze, and obtuse slacker rock nd home on An Insult, at times with no bridge at all between the disparate styles In TAGABOW’s “The Brazil”, a stop on a dime is the only thing that separates hazy slowcore and adventurous drum n bass, unambiguous evidence of the band’s penchant for iconoclast composition. A Country Western’s side of the split entertains similar stylistic mashups, opening with the atmospheric jungle of “Lung” before lurching into the alt rock “Keeping up with the Joneses”, whose fuzzed out lead riff calls back to bygone eras On paper, the combination of styles may read as cacophonous or incompatible, but the end result is instead a measured contrast of sounds, a re ection of the inescapable in uence of our chaotic time and the groups’ environments.

supernowhere Gestalt

Info: Ask the Seattle based trio supernowhere to describe their sound and they’ll

respond with unique yet shared perspective: “ orid indie rock”; “angular yet airy”; “maximum syncopation, interplay, and collaboration minimum direction, focus, and telling each other what to do” Each description hints at the band’s expansive, somewhat uncategorizable sound built around artful contradictions.

On their 2018 debut Gestalt, originally written and recorded in Vermont, and recently remixed and remastered by Dylan Hanwright (mem Great Grandpa, I Kill Giants, Apples With Moya), supernowhere juxtapose entrancing midtempo composition with slithery, arpeggiating melodies backed with melodic drumming Bassist and singer Meredith Davey is at the forefront of most songs with their lilted voice that seems to glide effortlessly over the syncopated phrasings of their bandmates Kurt Pacing (guitar, vocals) and Matt Anderson (drums), with Pacing occasionally taking over vocal leads with a delicate, hushed voice that further enriches supernowhere’s atmospheric articulations.

Over the next month I sat with my computer, loops, iPhone, Reface DX synthesiser and forgotten ideas and composed the music on the Metro and Eurostar and in various hotels while working on Ghosteen I would send the pieces to Arno from the train, or wherever I was located, and he edited them into the film.”

Nyx

“The plan was to make twenty 90-second tracks designed as TV themes,” says Arab Strap’s Aidan Moffat, of the initial thought behind his new instrumental album as Nyx Nótt “But it wasn't a satisfying listen, it was too gimmicky and silly.” So instead, Moffat decided to stretch the idea out, plunge deeper, and expand the music into full tracks, “making some of them quite long and dramatic, with the odd swift turn here and there.” In fleshing these tracks out into more fully realised songs he began sourcing samples from professional TV and film music libraries. “The focus then turned to making a proper album out of these modern library sounds,” he says. “I decided to stick with the Themes From title and named the tracks after the sorts of shows they made me think of when I listened back.”

The result is a record that explores genre themes such as: ‘Thriller, ‘Porno’, ‘Caper’ and‘Swashbuckler’, and acts as an audio equivalent of channel hopping through a unique TV station programmed by Moffat. “I still wasn't sure about all this until I did the album cover, which brought it all together,” he says, of the artwork that places an old smashed TV unit front and centre with a woman perched on top. “It has echoes of old TV compilations but is pretty cheeky and slightly sexy in that old 70s compilation style. I wanted this one to look a bit more fun than the last one, as well as hopefully sound a bit more fun too.”

Aside from being a fun experience, it is also a stirring and immersive listen, one that allows the listener to imagine their own accompanying visual scenarios to each musical theme. The opening ‘Docudrama’ marries a gently creeping beat with strings that glide from tense to sweeping, while ‘Porno’ is all seedy smoky jazz that feels plucked right out of Travis Bickle’s late night trips to porn cinemas in Taxi Driver. Touches of jazz pop up in other places too, on ‘Hardboiled’ this merges with subtle pulses and gargles of electronics that build to a rousing crescendo of horns and bleeps, and on ‘Caper’ there’s a vivacious full jazz band skip to the lively swinging rhythms. “There's a few more jazzy elements here,” Moffat says. “Although I'm not quite sure where that came from. Although, like everyone else, I've had plenty of time to be introspective recently, so I decided the next Nyx Nótt album should be more upbeat and encourage some occasional foot-tapping.” However, what becomes apparent, the longer you spend in the world of Themes From, is how singular and unique the tone of each composition is. “Each track has its own individual feel,” says Moffat. “The idea was to sound like a different composer and band throughout.” It’s a stylistic leap that continues Nyx Nótt’s trajectory as one that shares no direct link to Moffat’s other projects. “I approach them in completely different ways and with a different purpose in mind,” says Moffat. “I don't think Nyx has ever heard of Arab Strap, and certainly doesn't own any of their albums.” It’s also a notable shift from the debut album under this moniker, and suitably given the theme, Moffat has created a visual comparison between these two sonic worlds. “If the first Nyx Nótt album was like looking out on dark prairies before dawn, this is more like a walk through a neon Soho after a few cocktails.”

The star of Ernesto Djédjé started rising in the late 60s, when he became the guitar player and leader of Ivoiro Star. Annoyed by the “congolisation” of the Ivorian music that was taking place within the band, Ernesto left the group and emigrated to Paris in 1968 to record his first few singles arranged by Manu Dibango and influenced by Soul, Rhythm & Blues and Jerk.

Returning to Côte d‘Ivoire in 1974 Ernesto began thinking of ways of combining the rhythms and chants of the Bété people and fuse them with Makossa, Funk and Disco and create a musical style that was both Ivorian and International. He called his experiment Ziglibithy and his first two albums, immortalised at the EMI studios in 1977 in Lagos and released on the Badmos label, took West Africa by storm turning Ernesto Djédjé into an icon overnight and one of the legends of African music.

The song Zighlibitiens, brought to Colombia by an aeronautical mechanic in the early 1980, would become a huge hit on the Caribbean Coast and reach legendary status in Barranquilla and Cartagena.

Darren Hayman - You Will Not Die

Following a stream of thematic and conceptual albums over the last 15 years Darren Hayman has recently returned to a more introspective, personal kind of music.

Darren is the only musician on the album and the music conforms to a strict set of self imposed rules; only one voice, only 12 tracks, only one polyphonic instrument. ¨ Through this control and limited palette I found new melodies and structures. I wanted these old machines to guide me towards my most human record .¨

'A Real Human Being' is inspired by Darren's experience of life drawing. " Modern life encourages us to reduce people to images, jokes, memes. In life drawing, you're treating the person as a form, watching where the light and shadows fall, and then you're reminded that they are real, alive. "

In 'No Lime for the Gin', a group of old friends is reunited in middle age, holding a half hearted party where the talk is dominated by their hopes and broken dreams. 'Turn My Grey Tick Blue' is a wry look at the anxieties of dating in the digital age.

'You Were Always Here' ends the album on an optimistic note. Finding love late in life, the narrator ruminates on how the bad things happened for a reason, and that perhaps we always end up where we're supposed to be.

You Will Not Die is a much slower and more brooding voyage. It is a seductive, soulful collection of songs and instrumentals that sits among Darren's most emotive and intelligent work A1) How It Could Be A2) You Were My Map A3) Don ’t Haunt Me A4) A Real Human Being A5) Let ’s Drift A6) Love Is Through B1) Otium B2) A Room Within A Room B3) No Lime For The Gin B4) The Safest Way B5) Turn My Grey Tick Blue B6) Feel Like This Every Night C1) G irls Who Look Like You C2) Here’s The Stillness C3) Loser Run C4) Say You Want To Be Alone C5) We Are Repaired C6) Easter Gold D1) Actually I Still Really, Really Miss You D2) Holiday Eyes D3) Where Were You D4) Adverse Camber D5) I Am Owned D6) You Were Always Here

Heavenly

Heavenly vs Satan

Heavenly released four albums in the early 1990s. Skep Wax Records are going to re issue all four of them over a two year period. Classic black vinyl. The albums will include a 7” booklet with lyrics and new sleeve notes by the members of the band

This first Heavenly album was a bid to make a pure pop record. The punk noise of Talulah Gosh had exploded and expired. Unbothered by critical or popular reactions, the new band decided to immerse themselves in the creation of a sweet, tuneful pop record. It’s true that the punk influences aren’t hard to discern but it’s Pete’s elegant guitar and Amelia ’s melodies and multi layered harmonies that win out on these recordings.

The Skep Wax re issue of ‘Heavenly vs Satan’ includes Heavenly’s first two Sarah Records singles ‘I Fell In Love Last Night/Over And Over ’ and ‘Our Love Is Heavenly/Wrap My Arms Around Him’. 1 Cool Guitar Boy 2 Boyfriend Stays The Same 3 Lemonhead Boy 4 Shallow 5 Wish Me Gone 6 Don’t Be Fooled 7 It’s You 8 Stop Before You Say It 9 I Fell In Love Last Night 10 Over And Over 11 Our Love Is Heavenly 12 Wrap My Arms Around Him

GRATEFUL DEAD:

Dick’s Picks Vol. 33—10/9 & 10/10/76, Oakland Coliseum Stadium, Oakland, CA

(Limited, Hand-Numbered, 180-Gram 8-LP Set)

STREET DATE: DECEMBER 16, 2022

Trying to decide which Grateful Dead concert to reissue on vinyl is kind of like ordering from the menu of a three-star restaurant: no matter what you pick, it’s not just going to be good, it’s also going to be unique and memorable. Faced with such an embarrassment of riches, and trying to remain true to our vision of hitting a different year with each release, we decided to do what any sensible Dead Head would do: go BIG. Hence, our 8-LP release of Dick’s Picks Vol. 33! Fresh from a year-and-a-half touring hiatus, and back to full, two-drummer strength, the Dead opened for The Who as part of Bill Graham’s historic Day on the Green concerts in 1976. This Pick captures both dates in their entirety, and features one of the most monumental medleys (and that’s sayin’ something!) in band history with a 60-minute, 10-song journey through “St. Stephen”/”Not Fade Away”/”St. Stephen”/”Help on the Way”/”Slipknot!”/”Drums”/”Samson and Delilah”/”Slipknot!”/”Franklin’s Tower”/”One More Saturday Night” on the first day. Day two offers excellent takes on two solo Garcia favorites, “Might as Well” and “The Wheel,” that were new to the concert repertoire and a particularly fine “Ramble on Rose” among other highlights. Bill Graham had honored the Dead by selecting them to close the year’s stellar series of Day on the Green concerts, and that—perhaps coupled with the presence of formidable co-headliners The Who—sparked some of the band’s finest performances of the period.

But it’s not just the performances, or the fact that we hadn’t done a 1976 vinyl reissue, that drew us to this concert. This “Betty Board” is one of the cleanest recordings in the whole series, and with a fresh mastering for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering, lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music, and a pressing on 180-gram black vinyl by our friends at Gotta Groove Records, this is—dare we say it—the best-sounding Dead vinyl release we’ve done. Seriously…the test pressings (which were reviewed by Jeffrey Norman, Dead archivist David Lemieux and Real Gone’s Gordon Anderson) were just fantastic, so present and crisp. We’ve included a 4-page, fullcolor, LP-sized insert that captures all the extensive graphics that were on the CD release, too. It’s our biggest Grateful Dead album ever…limited to 6000 hand-numbered

You wanna hear a band about to explode? In June 1977, Cheap Trick was in Los Angeles to record their second album, In Color. To get the band in shape for the record, they booked 5 gigs at the Whisky a Go Go the weekend of June 3. The result: a series of firebreathing shows that you can still hear reverberating on the Sunset Strip to this day. KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer introduced the band at the shows, and his memories are clear: ““The Whisky was packed for every show. A lot of girls showed up. It was like the ‘new’ Beatles had arrived.” Indeed, this concert stand takes its place alongside The Doors in 1966, Led Zeppelin in 1969, and Van Halen in 1977 as among the most notorious shows hosted by the venerable venue. As drummer Bun E. Carlos puts it, “The Whisky shows capture a hungry band. It’s right before we went on tour with KISS and became much more famous than we were at this point. It was two nights where we did all our cool stuff from our first couple of records and it’s chock-full of goodies.”

All of this would be mere legend, witnessed by only a couple of hundred Cheap Trick fans each night, but for the fact that the tapes were rolling courtesy of the Record Plant’s Mobile Unit One for four out of the five shows (and the fidelity and immediacy of these recordings are AMAZING). But when At Budokan hit 18 months later and propelled the band to superstar status, the tapes were shelved. Now, 45 years later, the whole world can discover what those lucky souls witnessed those nights at the Whisky: that this quartet from Rockford, Illinois was on its way to making rock history.

Our 4-CD set contains all four shows in their entirety (well over half completely unreleased), complete with often hilarious onstage patter largely from guitarist Rick Nielsen, and includes notes from Ken Sharp featuring quotes from Nielsen, Carlos, and Robin Zander. Packaging is Live at Leeds style, and these shows rock every bit as hard as that legendary live gig. Limited to 2000 copies…if you are a Cheap Trick fan, speak now or forever hold your peace!

What happens when a Prophet meets a Prophet?

The answer lies within these grooves.

Amongst the hundreds of recordings issued by Sun Ra and his Arkestra, under their various guises, the majority were recorded in concert or in makeshift studios such as their early 1960s set-up at NYC's Choreographer's Workshop. Beyond those, roughly 22 albums were recorded at Variety Recording Studio in New York's Times Square. However, on August 25, 1986, Sun Ra and cohorts entered Mission Control, a state-of-the-art 24-track studio north of Boston, which was teeming with electronic keyboards and otherworldly sound generators. Nestled within that arsenal was a brand-new digital ultra keyboard — the Prophet VS ("Vector Synthesizer").

Of all the keyboards Ra played throughout his half-century career, the Prophet was one of the most sophisticated. There's no evidence that he had played either of the instrument's earlier incarnations, the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 and Prophet-10. Created using microprocessors, a then-new technological advance, under the auspices of engineer Dave Smith in 1978, the Prophet-5 revolutionized electronic music as the rst polyphonic and, most importantly, programmable synthesizer.

Ra was intrigued by the Prophet (surely by the instrument as well as by the name). Recorded during a single day, it's about time that these once lost performances have now been found.

It was a joy and a thrill to be sitting at the console hearing this music for the rst time, especially with my ngers on the faders and knobs of the mixing desk. We watched the oxide y o the 2" tapes during playback, making this our one chance to digitize before they metamorphosed into dust. Welcome to the new Sun Ra album….35+ years after it was recorded. The Omniverse has expanded once again.

Ireland based American songsmith Peter Broderick announces the release of Piano Works Vol. 1 (Floating in Tucker ’s Basement) a new comprehensive album of solo piano recordings out November 25. Shining a light on the artist’s ongoing piano-based compositions, this release offers an opportunity to celebrate his more intimate work.

A comprehensive collection of Peter Broderick’s piano work to date, these recordings were originally captured in Berlin to accompany the 2017 sheet music book Piano Works Vol. 1 The book contains 20 pieces for solo piano and a download code to access new recordings of all 20 pieces. Up until now, the only way to hear these recordings was to purchase the sheet music book.

This release sees the original recordings receiving further treatment and processing by Tucker Martine in the customised echo chamber of his studio in Portland, Oregon—the region where Broderick grew up. The clean and unaffected original recordings were intended for educational purposes, so for this release Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths suggested to ‘throw the recordings into the well’, for a more dynamic and conscious listening experience.

“We gave these recordings a bit of a makeover We sent all the tracks over to legendary engineer/producer Tucker Martine, who processed all 20 of them with unique tape and reverb treatments, utilising the echo chamber of his Portland studio, Flora Recording & Playback,” explains Broderick.

Now these recordings are set to be released on double vinyl, double CD and all digital platforms.

Portland’s premiere purveyors of kraut-inflected party rock return with an album’s worth of tunes crammed into an extended playing set.

The eponymous lead track bursts out of the gate with ebullience. Lee Ritter’s rhythms and Cord Amato’s riffs fit comfortably in the space where Kraftwerk left off and DEVO began. “Artificial Head” may be about a Fleshlight, or it could be a paperback sci-fi-derived weed fantasy. You could listen to Møtrik while sober, but why would you do that? Next up is the measured and groovy “Castle Electric” which features a dialog between bassist/vocalist Erik Golts and a sexy computer. His German is easily as good as her English and one wonders how the night ended after she switched the lights “auf.” Side one completes with “Unifox” built up from a Dave Fulton synth composition into a full-fledged Møtrik track, this being the first time the band has bucked its contrarian vision of a band that jams in its own professional recording studio yet refuses to produce itself. “Outer Reaches” is the patiently awaited sidelong epic. The contemplative and exploratory scene begins with chirrups from an analog swamp, then slowly rises through the hazy pastel atmosphere on a crystalline bubble before blasting off into full-fledged Floydian outer space psych.

As always, Møtrik colors between the lines, applying its overall aesthetic to rock music, which is to say it’s the FORTRAN approach to basement partying.

Artificial Head is just what your body needs to feel complete.

Oak is a Norwegian progressive pop/rock band that originally emerged from a folk-rock duo. The four members have a diverse background spanning from classical piano to electronica, prog- and hard-rock, with references to the alternative scene as well as progressive rock – something that has combined to make a distinguished and unique sound

Musically, The Quiet Rebellion of Compromise is the most dynamic Oak album so far, with a wide range of influences showing through. We’re still in very familiar Oak territory, but with some sharper edges and some surprising twists and turns. After their previous album False Memory Archive, the band set out to write some shorter songs for a change – and ended up with their longest songs yet. As on their other albums, there are subtle hints to both past and future songs in the Oak universe.

For this album, the band decided to write about an important and touchy subject – Suicide and psychic health in general. Music as an art form can be very open for interpretation, so to be sure that the message comes across, they’ve asked for advice from experienced scholars on the subject. The font used on the album cover is partially made of handwriting from two real suicide notes, to underline the concept.

The band has a wide source of inspiration – Everything from classical music and impressionism to movie soundtracks and prog-rock. No wonder Oak really doesn't sound like anything else.

The album was recorded in Ljugekroken, mixed in Ghostward Studio by David Castillo (Katatonia, Leprous Opeth, etc.), and mastered by Tony Lindgren in Fascination Street Studio

FREDATLAST BANNER OF A LOST BELIEF EP STREET

LABEL: Small Matter Records

A founding member of the beloved Gothenburg electronic group Little Dragon, Fredrik Wallin will be a familiar face to many. Over the past two decades his band has been a consistent global presence on the charts and festival stages, and in that time Wallin has collaborated widely outside the group, working with artists like Flying Lotus, Mac Miller, Brittany Howard, De La Soul, Gorillaz and DJ Shadow. In 2022, 25 years into his celebrated career Wallin is announcing his debut release as a solo artist under the moniker FredAtlast, the EP “Banner of A Lost Belief” released on 2 September on Small Matter Records.

The “Banner of A Lost Belief” EP had its beginnings five years ago with sessions of home improvisation in down time away from the band. Just Fred alone with guitar and voice, a fresh approach after years of deep immersion in the production side of things with Little Dragon. Words were ad libbed, their deeper meaning deciphered later. Much of the EP was written in an old wood crafting centre that Fred rented, its organic surrounds perhaps lending the songs their earthy feel. Recording and mixing subsequently took place with friends at the Little Dragon studio in Gothenburg.

Fred’s musical immersion began growing up in Gothenburg listening to the Beach Boys and his parents Springsteen and Elvis collection, moving on in teenage years to the Clash, Pistols and Nirvana before a brief religious phase reset the musical pallet to nothing but praise music. Once that fever dream ended, Fred’s interest turned to jazz, soul and absorbing everything experimental. The subsequent legend of Little Dragon has been told elsewhere but suffice to say when Fred formed the band with school friends Yukimi Nagano and Erik Bodin back in 1996 they had no inkling that come 2022 it would still be a revered band around the world.

That brings us full circle to Fred’s first solo foray. “Banner Of A Lost Belief” is a collection of finely crafted, soulful songs as different to Little Dragon as could be, arriving now, according to Fred, “because it was time to explore that dormant side of myself. I felt I had something to say, also perhaps maybe to prove something to myself”.
