Stock up before her tour with The Wood Brothers and Railroad Earth! Amy Helm’s This Too Shall Light, produced by 3-time Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Joe Henry, is one of 2018’s most rewarding releases. Helm left her home and comfort zone of Woodstock, NY, choosing to record in Los Angeles within the confines of just a fourday window. The musicians were directed not to overthink the songs, and Helm herself barely performed any of the selections while leading up to the recording. As a result, the sessions forced fast musical trust among the collaborators and yielded the vibrant instrumental improvisations heard throughout This Too Shall Light. A lifelong musician and music-lover, Helm’s parents —The Band’s legendary drummer and singer Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus — guided her training and influences. She later became a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and served as a backing musician in her father’s Midnight Ramble Band. And on This Too Shall Light, Helm says that two songs in particular pay homage to Levon — “The Stones I Throw,” a song he released in 1965 with Levon and the Hawks, and the closing traditional number, an a cappella version of the hymnal “Gloryland,” which was passed from father to daughter.

Nashville's Hammock follows up 2017's critically-acclaimed Mysterium with Universalis, the second installment of a planned three-album series. While Mysterium took listeners down a horizontal path that explored themes of death and grief, Universalis begins a vertical, upward movement back into the light. At times, Universalis calls back to Hammock's 2006 album Raising Your Voice‌ Trying to Stop an Echo, rediscovering early influences like Low and Red House Painters, while also retaining Mysterium's deep ambient, neoclassical style. To achieve this sound, Hammock brought on Francesco Donadello (A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Olafur Arnalds, Johann Johannsson) and Peter Katis (Interpol, Jonsi, The National), who each mixed portions of the album. LUCIUS The Fug Yep Soundation is a new 7” series created in loving memory of producer, songwriter and musician - Richard Swift. On December 7th Erased Tapes present ‘Fallen Trees’ – the new album by singular talent and literal force of nature Lubomyr Melnyk – known as ‘the prophet of the piano’ due to his lifelong devotion to his instrument. The album release coincides with Melnyk’s 70th birthday, but despite the autumnal hint in its title, there’s little suggestion of him slowing down. Having received critical acclaim and coheadlining the prestigious Royal Festival Hall as part of the Erased Tapes 10th anniversary celebrations, after many years his audience is now both global and growing. The composer is finally gaining a momentum in his career that matches the vibrant, highly active energy of his playing. Cascades of notes, canyons and rivers of sound: there’s something about his music that channels the natural world at its most awe-inspiring. In ‘Fallen Trees’ the connection with the environment continues, taking its cue from a long rail journey Melnyk made through Europe. Glancing out of the window as the train passed through a dark forest, he was struck by the sight of trees that had recently been felled. “They were glorious,” he says. “Even though they’d been killed, they weren’t dead. There was something sorrowful there, but also hopeful.” That sense of sadness touched by optimism infuses the album, too: rarely has Melnyk made music so shot through with melancholy and regret, but which sounds so rapt, even radiant. Drawing comparisons with Steve Reich and the post-rock group Godspeed You, Black Emperor!, Pitchfork praised his 2015 album ‘Rivers And Streams’ for it’s “sustained concentration and ecstatic energy”. That energy is present in ‘Fallen Trees’ too, but at points the tone is quieter, the mood darker and more wistful. At points elsewhere on the album, despite being rooted in the wonders of the natural world, there’s a kaleidoscopic quality in the fractal flurry of notes and the broad spectrum of colour they summon. The work that gives it its name, the five-part, 20-minute ‘Fallen Trees’, is one of the most ambitious and demanding pieces he has ever created. Though the music is – as ever – Melnyk’s own, ‘Fallen Trees’ once again features a number of Erased Tapes artists. Japanese vocal artist Hatis Noit, whose first EP ‘Illogical Dance’ came out to much acclaim earlier this year, lends ethereal vocals, floating mysteriously above the surface of Melnyk’s eddying piano lines before diving far beneath. Other contributors include Berlin-based cellist Anne Müller, a sometime collaborator with Nils Frahm, and American singer David Allred, the most recent addition to the label family. “More than any of the albums that I’ve done, it’s a real collaboration,” Melnyk insists, emphasising how much he owes to his producer, Erased Tapes founder Robert Raths. Born in the Ukraine in 1948, Melnyk fell for the piano at an early age. Given lessons as a young child after his family emigrated to Canada after the iron curtain came down, he was immediately transfixed by the possibilities of the instrument. “On the piano, you can create whole worlds,” he reflects. “I realised that it could be an orchestra, a choir of sound.” After studying classical piano and graduating with a degree in Latin and Philosophy from St Paul’s College in Winnipeg, in the early 1970s Melnyk found himself in Paris. Homeless and in desperate need of money, he supported himself by accompanying dance lessons for a company run by the experimental choreographer Carolyn Carlson. The experience became a kind of epiphany: watching Carlson’s dancers, he began to play a new kind of music, spontaneous and improvisatory – responding not to rigid classical conventions but the dance he saw unfolding. Using the sustain pedal to create echo and reverb, he transformed free-flowing cascades of notes into hypnotic waves of sound. Eventually he found a name for this new style: ‘continuous music’, which he uses to this day. Critics have detected the influence of Ravi Shankar and other Indian styles in Melnyk’s music, along with the insistent, repetitive textures of minimalist pioneers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Melnyk himself cites his debt to the American composer Terry Riley, particularly the legendary 1964 work ‘In C’, which he says “opened the world for me”. But he adds that if you listen carefully, you’ll also be able to hear the lilting contours of traditional Ukrainian folk music. It might be truer to say that there is genuinely nothing quite like Melnyk’s work: a unique musical pioneer, he has defiantly carved his own path. “I don’t say to people I’m a composer,” he declares. “I don’t know what I am.” Melnyk composes, as he plays, at the piano, feeling out lines and individual rhythmic cells that bubble, undulate and gradually expand into vast, interlinked frameworks. Asked to describe what it’s like to live inside his music, he says “my whole body is transformed as I play, it honestly feels like that. My fingers feel like the winds of the world; it feels like you’re physically transcending dimensions.”

Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers are releasing their first ever holiday album, THE CHRISTMAS SWING, on their own Juicy Juju label, through the VizzTone Label Group. Following up their acclaimed 2017 sophomore album, BIG ROAD, the new holiday album is a fun seasonal romp chock full of hooky blues-guitar-fueled gems.
CHRISTMAS SWING features Erin’s songs and her arrangements of traditionals and songs by Chuck Berry, Bessie Smith, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Leadbelly and Bo Carter. Title track “The Christmas Swing” is a re-working of their 2014 hit “The Delta Swing,” co-penned with special guest Richard Rosenblatt (who also lends harmonica). Erin’s guitar playing shines as she plays a number of different styles, ranging from acoustic fingerstyle on Bessie Smith’s “At the Christmas Ball” (a duet with pianist John Juxo), to the raw electric guitar on Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Merry Christmas”, to the early rock n’ roll licks of Chuck Berry’s “Run Run Rudolph.” Her well-known kazoo also makes an appearance on the Smith tune and the (not really holiday-themed, but festive) Bo Carter number “Drink and Get Drunk”, as well as on closer Auld Lang Syne.

Lincoln Sugar Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1956. He grew up in a poor area of West Kingston and from an early age developed a love of Reggae music and the music of Studio One in particular. As a teenager, he became selector for Sound of Silence Keystone and Gathering of Youth local sound-‐systems. By the late 1970s Minott had risen to become one of the biggest stars in Jamaican music.

Sugar Minott began his career at Studio One. After auditioning in front of Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd in the early 1970s, he became the first artist to record new songs over classic rhythms, singing over original Studio One tapes – the significance of which led directly to the birth of dancehall, as Channel One, Joe Gibbs and hundreds of other Jamaican producers quickly began releasing their own material based on these same classic Studio One rhythms replayed by Sly and Robbie, The Aggrovators, Soul Syndicate, Roots Radics and many others.

“I knew Studio One spiritually before I knew Studio One physically. You know I grew up beside a dancehall and Sir Coxsone’s sound used to play there from when I was a boy. So from that influence you know I used to love Studio One sound so much, I became a sound selector. So that was my first involvement with getting to know Studio One music like The Heptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, the whole works and that was my life from a youth.”

After Sugar Minott’s debut many other artists followed suit at the label such as Freddie McGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Lone Ranger and Michigan & Smiley leading to one of the most creative periods for the label. This is the first retrospective of Sugar Minott at the label and most of these recordings have never been widely available outside Jamaica.

Sugar Minott went on to a huge career in Reggae and is today one of the biggest stars in Jamaican music. He set up his own Black Roots/Youth Promotions label releasing music by Barry Brown, Michael Palmer, Tenor Saw, Barrington Levy, Horace Andy, Garnett Silk, Junior Delgado, Yami Bolo, Junior Reid and many more. Sugar Minott went on to work for numerous Jamaican producers. His ‘Good Thing Going’ produced by Donovan Germain became a number one hit in the UK and led to the rise of Lovers Rock. Italy’s Throw Down Bones are something of an enigma in the experimental underground. Since the release of their highly-praised 2015 self-titled album, they’ve picked up a notorious reputation on the European live circuit for their pulverising, constantly-mutating live shows. In a review of the debut, album listeners were told to “make no mistake, this is dance music” and that may have been true back then but now, back with their second album titled Two, the band have taken that to a whole new extreme. Ditching the hypnotic coldwave tendencies of their earlier work for an all-out sonic assault of industrial four-to-the-floor rhythms and screeching acid house.. Where the old Throw Down Bones was better suited for intimate venues and psych fests, this new evolution sees them turn their eyes to the most underground techno clubs and the sleaziest warehouse venues. The two key members of Throw Down Bones are Francesco Vanni and Dave Gali but on this effort, their producer James Aparicio also played an integral part in writing the album. Francesco spends his time building bespoke FX pedals and analogue synths under the name Noise Militia and James was formerly the in-house engineer at the Mute Records studio. With Noise Militia prototypes littered around the studio, Francesco and Dave’s knack for instrumental experimentation and James’ studio prowess, it should come as no surprise that the result is a collection of tracks that push Throw Down Bones’ electronica right to the brink. If you like your music intense, punishing and ear-drumrattling then this is the record for you. The first three tracks on the album ‘First Follower’, ‘We Are Drugs’ and ‘Slow Violence’ lay out the bands mission from the off, bursting through a pulsing electronic throb are unrelenting motorik basslines that twist and contort as they circles around and around and around, layers of juddering hardware electronics constantly punching through. Then there’s ‘Golovkin’, a merciless all-out rave track that zaps you right in the cortex and the electro-throb of ‘Zero Day Exploit’ that, like a cyber-attack of the same name, is an unstoppable attack on the senses – it’s less in-your-face than the rest of the album but try and stop that programmed acid-tinged groove from tearing through your bloodstream. 1. A family of spiritualists, writers and performers generations deep; a home haunted by legends of literature and music; personal upheaval and a sense of being unseated in time: these are the origins of singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vera Sola. With an ethereal voice providing the foundation for a haunting body of song, her timeless sound and enthralling stage presence draws an unlikely connection between Vera Lynn and Vera Hall; the grande dame of British music hall and the Depression-era Alabamian singer of work-songs and spirituals. As a child she played classical piano, later guitar and bass, learning more by instinct than instruction. An obsessive reader and writer, she’d forever written poetry and been fascinated by wordplay, falling in love at a young age with Russian literature and the work of Dylan Thomas, James Joyce and William Faulkner. All this, along with a career as a stage and voice actor—combined with years of touring in Elvis Perkins’ band— would serve as a launching point for Vera Sola. But it wasn’t until 2017 that she began to experiment with the idea of recording her own material. She hadn’t even shared her music with her closest friends and family, let alone recorded anything of her own. Even then, despite a lineage and lifetime of public performance, she felt a barrier blocking off her voice. Writing and playing came easily, but singing her own songs presented a different challenge. She decided instead to make the album entirely alone, picking up instruments she had never played before, drawing from them the internal music that had for so long gone unexpressed. She recorded using anything at hand. Bones and breaking glass, chains and filing cabinets, hammers and two-by-fours. Countless moving parts meticulously layered and arranged. And that old fear now cast off brought new abilities, a change in her voice, including an otherworldly vibrato. What emerged from the sessions was this collection of ten finely-honed and immaculately-rendered ballads. He reached out to drummer Will Rock whom he had played with in a group a few years prior, the two began jamming to some of the songs, and additional members were brought in culminating forming the basis for what they then called “Teevee”. Under this moniker, they played their first show at Hotel Vegas and soon thereafter released their first self-titled EP effort in 2017 which received immediately positive response in the Texas psych community. It was quickly followed up with another 4-track EP entitled “Bask” featuring the track “Junk Driver”. In 2018, the band renamed themselves WURVE, and hit the studio to knock out the tracks for their first full-length album coming out December 7th, 2018 via Yippee Ki Yay Records.

MARIEL ITO 2000-2005 An early alias of the Cuban Miami born Eric Estornel the Mariel Ito trademark driving percussion, deep pads and hypnotic arrangements saw releases on iconic imprints like Modern Love, and Scsi AV at the turn of the century before being put into hibernation from 2006 onwards. Estornel on the genesis of the project: "When i was 3 years old, Miami suddenly became flooded with refugees from Cuba called the Mariel Boatlift. There was a huge crime wave and cubans that had been in Miami for years would call the "bad" refugees Marielitos. I was a problematic and hyperactive kid constantly getting into trouble, and eventually my teachers began calling me el Marielito." Fast forward to 2000, while thinking of a new name for this project Eric settled on Mariel ito as a nod to the Cuban community. "Usually only Miami Cubans understand the pun" he adds. Electro had always been a popular sound in Miami during Eric's formative years there, he gravitated towards its futurism as well as the its emphasis on sound design, synth work and beat programming. His natural facility for emotive melodies and irrestistable grooves are immediately evident in the ten tracks on this release. Composed between 2000 and 2005 the music takes cues from the iconic IDM and electro sounds of the mid / late 90s putting a new twist on broken beats and synthetics, artists such as Aphex Twin, Gescom, Bitstream, G immick, Pendle Coven, the pioneering Sheffield bleep sound and of course, a certain infamous Belgian imprint. "R&S helped sculpt my taste growing up in the 90s. So many seminal records came out back then that were really ahead of their time. There's obvious picks like Selected Ambient Works and Energy Flash, but I was even more inspired by the works of David Morley, CJ Bolland, Source and the rest." This release underlines the welcome reactivation of the Mariel Ito project from hibernation, with Estornel's full creative commitment moving forward; "Friends have been asking me for years why I ever abandoned it in the first place, and would egg me on to relaunch it. Folly & the Hunter Remains
After returning from hiatus with their new single, “Remain,” this past June, Folly & the Hunter have now lifted the curtain on a new full-length album. Due out October 26 via Outside Music, Remains is filled with striking melodies and tightly woven rhythms which come together to immediately strike the ear. Recorded over 2 weeks at the Tragically Hip’s Bathouse Recording Studio, the goal was to get the band sequestered into a studio without outside distractions and have them live and breathe the making of this album. Engineer Nyles Spencer was a source of technical inspiration with Nick handling bass and guitar duties while Laurie played most of the other instruments. Mathieu Parisien (Karkwa, Patrick Watson, Aidan Knight) mixed the album. Having previously recorded as a quartet, the pair had made their sketches of the songs at their Montreal rehearsal space and fleshed them out fully in Bath. Both Laurie and Nick used the relaxed environment to get back to the enjoyment they had when they first started collaborating. Their lead single, “Remain”, is the track that catalyzed their new upbeat feel. Organically grown out of an improvisation, experimenting with grittier sounds and more driving rhythms, “Remain” moved the group past the stylistic constraints of their previous work. While performing on the road with Little Scream, Laurie became pals with Nik Ewing from Local Natives, who was enlisted to design the album artwork for Remains. His work conveys the free spirit and sense of abandon the band felt while making the album. Divided into two distinct long-form pieces themed around Day and Night, ‘Activated Clown’ draws it’s inspiration not only from the steamy climate and lush landscapes of Portugal, but also from focused viewings of paranormal sci-fi horror films, 80s nine-ball billiards matches, and a steady diet of coffee and veggie alheira sausage. This bizarre concoction of stimuli, however random it may seem, helped give birth to a set of future-minded MIDI jazz suites that enthusiastically scratch the outer limits of live improvised electronic music. “Hermeto Tume,” representing Day, conveys an upbeat, active, dance-like celebration that dissolves into pure abstraction, with sparkling aquatic gestures trickling forth in a gentle cacophony of acoustic percussion, guitar scribbles, and synthetic washes. “Mantis Suite: Invitation To Love,” representing Night, operates in a more subdued, blissful sector of deep space, patiently evolving into staccato, conversationally open and melodic zones of electric relaxation. Both pieces exhibit a careful attention to texture, melody, and space, creating an open channel for three creative minds to function as a single exploratory unit, hungry and avid for the unlocking of new sounds. These rich and vivid pieces that comprise ‘Activated Clown’ contain a unique, crystalline essence, showcasing an incredibly strong improvisational relationship between the three players. It’s easy to eye collaborative records between two established artists with either a weary sigh or a degree of cynicism. In an age where a track or record seems to perform better directly in relation to how many artist names are on the digital byline, it can often feel like engineered circumstance or a desire to exponentially boost appeal comes before any natural create endeavour. In the case of On Reflection however – the new record by Derwin Dicker AKA Gold Panda and Jas Shaw, one half of Simian Mobile Disco, the venture, under the moniker Selling is rooted in a long-standing friendship and deep creative history. Recorded at Jas’ studio in Kent during 2017, the duo’s debut album ably characterizes the warmth, melody and emotion that is infused in all Gold Panda records and adds in a dizzying array of techno and synth styles. Released in late 1968, the second Pearls Before Swine record continued to deliver music with a preternatural sense of what the youth of America wanted to hear. One Nation Underground had been a surprise hit when released in 1967 by the hipster free-jazz indie label ESP, receiving an incredible organic response, with continuous underground radio play and sales. Coming from obscurity in Florida into a position of speaking to people everywhere, Tom Rapp and his bandmates felt emboldened to embark upon an evolved piece of record making. The music of Balaklava strips away the manic, post-garage band diversity of the first album, instead grounding the production around Tom Rapp’s guitar and singing, with the touches of instrumental color all the more dramatic and striking. Producer Richard Alderson utilized breathy sweeps of reverb, sound effects, tape manipulation and spoken word recordings along with an array of instrumental overdubs including banjo, marimba, organ, clavinet, flute, English horn and strings (played by the band along with New York jazz session players Bill Salter and Al Schackman, plus The Fugs’ Lee Crabree and legendary saxophonist Joe Farrell, with Selwart Clarke
and Warren Smith contributing string arrangements) to reach for the universal space sought in Tom Rapp’s meditative, existential songs. The message writ between the leaves of Balaklava — WAR NO MORE — is elegantly written. From the implication of the title (Balaklava was the site of the battle at which Britain’s notorious Charge of the Light Brigade resulted in heavy casualties for no visible gain), the epigraph from Santayana, the dedication to Pvt Edward D Slovik, (the only US soldier to have been tried and executed for desertion since the Civil War) and the use of Bruegel the Elder’s “The Triumph of Death” on the cover, the message is plain, without ever being directly stated — the world is a beautiful place, but for the scourge of man at war. Musically, the message is conveyed with one or two passing lyrical references, letting Tom Rapp’s use of literary reference and allegory dwell on the transcendence of love and pastoral beauty in life, achieving a stinging impact, as much by what isn’t said as what is. This sets Balaklava apart from much of other protest music from the Vietnam era — and it has allowed it to age gracefully into the 21st century. Like One Nation Underground before
it, Balaklava celebrates 50 years of life in stunning fashion. Original producer Richard Alderson has remastered the album, restoring the precision of the original mix — and in the process, revealing fantastically dynamic performances and dispersing the haze of the years that had gathered over latter-day editions of Balaklava. The music and message it intended to deliver to the world are still needed, the peace still sought. The fight to understand and to change is still ongoing. And so, Balaklava has fresh purpose, after all this time. Tom Rapp passed away while this album was being readied for re-release. While he spent the majority of his life working as a lawyer who practiced humanist, equal-rights law — “60s law”, as he put it — for the benefit of many underrepresented people, his name will best be remembered and will forever be synonymous with the music of Pearls Before Swine. We are grateful to help in pushing this music forward toward the eternity it deserves. It goes without saying that this anniversary restoration of Balaklava is dedicated to Tom’s memory. May he rest in peacefulness, and live in the positivity that Pearls Before Swine bring to all who hear their music.

I’m In Love With A Dreadlocks: Brown Sugar And The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977-60

Soul Jazz Records are releasing this first ever collection of the pioneering British reggae Lovers Rock group Brown Sugar including rare singles, dubs and extended mixes. The album comes with extensive sleevenotes and interviews with Dennis Bovell, Pauline Catlin, John Kpiaye and Winston Edwards (Studio 16). Brown Sugar were formed by three young teenage girls – Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol Simms in South London in 1976. In the short period of time 1976-1980, the group – working with Dennis Bovell on the mixing desk and John Kpiaye (‘Brownie T) in the studio – recorded barely a handful of singles on the new Lovers Rock label, a number of which went to the top of the UK reggae charts. But success stopped there, and with no album release and no industry support the group broke up in the early 1980s. Following their split Caron Wheeler became the lead vocalist for the hugely successful group Soul II Soul, Carol Simms launched a solo career as Kofi (re-making a number of Brown Sugar songs with producer Mad Professor) and Pauline Catlin returned to education. Despite their relatively low-key mainstream public exposure Brown Sugar (and the label on which their first records appeared) announced to the world a new genre of reggae music, Lovers Rock, which spoke for the first time with the sensibility of a new segment of British society; that of first generation-born Black British female youth. And while Lovers Rock became synonymous with sweet love songs, Brown Sugar’s music in fact expressed far more; a righteous pride and consciousness in being Black and British, a political stance more often associated with UK roots groups like Black Slate, Aswad, Misty in Roots and other British reggae acts in the late 1970s. Brown Sugar were in fact their own genre of ‘conscious lovers rock’ – an expression of ideological black cultural pride. Brown Sugar’s handful of three-minute love songs (often plus extended dubs) somehow manage to encapsulate all the complexities of identity, sexual politics and youthful righteousness of Afro-Caribbean youth living in Britain in the 1970s. Songs such as ‘I’m in Love with A Dreadlocks’, ‘Our Reggae Music’, ‘Black Pride’ and ‘Dreaming of Zion’ spoke with a straightforward righteousness and consciousness that few roots groups could hope to match. The fact that they were all teenagers is even more striking. In the mid-70s British reggae came into being as first generation Black Britain was able to find a voice able to express the issues of growing up British with Caribbean roots. This came about in two different ways – the British roots music of (essentially male) groups such as Aswad, Steel Pulse and Black Slate – and Lovers Rock, the expression of a black essentially (but not totally) female consciousness – Brown Sugar, Louisa Mark, 15-16-17, Marie Pierre, Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Jean Adebambo and others. And significantly, while British roots music was a variant on a Jamaican style, Lovers Rock was uniquely British – the first authentic British reggae sound. Dennis Bovell comments, “For Lovers Rock we needed a pulpit, a way of saying ‘this is the style’. Sound systems were already saying ‘this is lovers,’ brandishing it in the dance. Our intention was to create a style of music that my generation could identify with – one that had a beat, and you could dance to with your partner in a sound system setting.” Dennis Bovell’s mixes for the group gave a further dimension to Brown Sugar records – a sound system mentality, adding sound effects and dub elements. ‘I’m in Love with A Dreadlocks’ was the debut release for both Brown Sugar and the Lovers Rock label, a fitting calling card for both. The record was a hit on many sound systems across the UK, reaching the top of the reggae charts.
