MARK KOZELEK with PETRA HADEN
JOEY ALWAYS SMILED Mark Kozelek is teams up with singer Petra Haden for a new LP called Joey Always Smiled. Along with Haden, it features contributions from Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, character actor Kevin Corrigan, regular Kozelek collaborator Ben Boye, and more. And following six originals with very Kozelekian song titles, the record closes out with a folky, beautifully spare cover of Huey Lewis & The News’ immortal Back To The Future soundtrack hit “The Power Of Love”. HIGHLIGHTS: Announce and premier of “The Power of Love” picked up by Brooklyn Vegan, Stereogum and Spin TRACK LISTING: CD 1. Parakeet Prison 2. Joey Always Smiled 3. Rest In Peace R Lee Ermey 4. CAT NO: ONULP145 (Vinyl) / ONULP145X (Coloured Vinyl) / ONUCD145 (CD) UPC: 5060263722588 (Black Vinyl) / 5060263722625 (Silver Vinyl) 5060263722595 (CD) RELEASE DATE: 6th December 2019 Overview: A dub companion to the critically-acclaimed Rainford album that sees the Upsetter and co-producer Adrian Sherwood radically re-version the original tapes with a host of guest musicians including Brian Eno and Vin Gordon. As well as highlighting the deft musicianship of the original backing band on the Rainford sessions (which include core On-U luminaries from Creation Rebel, Tackhead and Dub Syndicate) these re-works also invite some further players into the cosmic mix. Brian Eno makes an unexpected right channel entry into “Here Come The Warm Dreads”, a heavily processed sound system overhaul of Rainford highlight “Makumba Rock”, cheekily re-titled as a nod to Eno’s own debut solo album. This completes a circle started in 1981 with African Head Charge’s My Life In A Hole In The Ground similarly referencing the contemporary collaboration between Eno and David Byrne, and their “vision of a psychedelic Africa”. Elsewhere, legendary trombonist Vin Gordon (one of the hornsmen on Bob Marley & The Wailers Exodus amongst many other classic sides) lends his distinctively woozy blowing to tracks such as “Rattling Bones And Crowns” (a late night flipside to “Kill Them Dreams Money Worshippers”) and “Crickets In Moonlight” (“Cricket In The Moon” refracted through some beautifully louche late summer heat haze lens). On the closest the album has to a title track, “Heavy Rainford” strips back the narrative from “Autobiography Of The Upsetter” to ride the rhythm with all sorts of mixing desk tricks, anchored by the killer “I Am The Upsetter” hook from LSK. It’s important to note that it’s not all Rainford re-works though: “Dreams Come True” and “Above And Beyond” are Scratch and Sherwood originals, heard here for the first time and equally strong material for this purple patch in the career of an unstoppable Jamaican maverick and true musical pioneer. STREET DATE: DECEMBER 6, 2019 Klaus Nomi was a fixture in the late-‘70s NYC East Village performance art scene, but his big coming-out party was when he performed alongside David Bowie on Saturday Night Live in 1979. It wasn’t easy to out-alien The Man Who Fell to Earth, but Nomi’s demented harlequin act complete with plucked, Elsa Lanchester-like eyebrows, whiteface and widow’s peak— not to mention a pink poodle doll pal —pulled it off (Nomi often claimed he was from outer space). That got Nomi signed to RCA, where he recorded two studio albums (and adopted the oversized plastic tux that Bowie wore when he sang “The Man Who Sold the World” ON SNL) before succumbing to AIDS in 1983 at the age of 39, one of the first celebrities to die from the disease. This is his 1981 debut record, generally regarded as his crowning achievement; it includes his signature “The Nomi Song,” as well as just-plain-weird cover versions of Lou Christie’s “Lightning Strikes” and Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” that display the German countertenor’s incredible vocal range and uncompromising artistic vision. Throw in some startling performances of classical repertoire like Henry Purcell’s “The Cold Song” and Saint-Saëns’ aria to Samson and Delilah and you have a record destined to crash and burn commercially but to live on in cult classic-dom forever. Real Gone Music’s reissue features the original album art and inner sleeve; the vinyl comes in a limited hot pink vinyl pressing in homage to Klaus’ poodle doll!

iBarcoder Trial From their beginning in 1965, to January of 1969, when this Fillmore West date was recorded, Country Joe and the Fish had come a long way, headlining major festivals around the U.S. to successfully completing an extensive European tour. But, as a band “that was not supposed to be a band,” personnel started to change. Bruce Barthol, the bass player, moved to England where formed “Formerly Fat Harry” and gigged extensively. A month later, both Chicken Hirsh and David Cohen also departed.

In a sense, this recording encompasses an era-ending by remaining Fish members and colleagues who, anticipating the band’s impending changes, showed up for one last fling with “high-art” Berkeley Psychedelia.

Original recording by Eddie Friedner
This date also marks the first U.S. appearance of super group-to-be Led Zeppelin, who had opened a number of shows for the Fish’s European tour.
Originally produced by Sam Charters
Fish performances, at least in my experience, were never quite predictable. Occasionally, probably out of the sheer boredom of playing the same song list over and over again, the band would “jam” the set. In Fish parlance, this would require an instrumental performance on any one of a number of songs, joined sporadically with an actual “song.” “Donovan’s Reef Jam” is an example of this impromptu phenomenon. “Flying High” is played instrumentally and then somewhere in the middle of the piece, Joe counts it in and the song “starts.” On other occasions a song flows into a long extended collection of songs, sometimes with lyrics and sometimes without. This is not to say other San Francisco bands didn’t follow the same pattern; as a matter of fact, the Grateful Dead was also jamming the set in 1969. It must have been a trend.

The two sets recorded here represent about 85% of the material Country Joe and the Fish were performing in early 1969. Jack Casady’s (December ’68-January ’69) driving bass (four amps, each powering one string) together with Mickey Hart created a unique sound throughout the “jam” that was different from the first four Vanguard albums that the Fish recorded. Jack’s interplays with Barry Melton on “Doctor of Electricity” showcase both his and Barry’s styles superbly.

We did the first recordings of them live at the Fillmore East, but couldn’t capture them at their best. They were headlining a bill that opened with Procol Harum, continued with Ten Years After, and ended with Country Joe & The Fish. By the time the first two bands had finished it was the middle of the night, and both the audience and the Fish were too wiped out to make their music happen. We decided to make another try, so with Ed bribing his way on to an airplane with several hundred pounds of recording equipment as carry-on luggage we flew out to San Francisco to record what was going to be their last gig together. Ed rented a large moving van and set everything up outside the Fillmore Auditorium on Market Street, The opening act was a new English band called Led Zeppelin, so we thought there was a chance the audience wouldn’t be as limp for Joe and the Fish as they’d been in New York. Since it was going to be a final night on stage together the band decided to invite all their friends to join them, and backstage there was a long party before they went out to play. Ed was sitting in his van on the street outside, with Bill Belmont, who did a number of things with the Fish, helping him keep track of what was happening on stage. A small TV monitor had been rigged up so Ed could see what the band was doing, but he had to keep watching the needles on the machines. It also turned out he had to watch his back. A street gang tried to take over the van and Ed—who had learned a lot in his youth on New York streets—had to back them off with a broken bottle. Back stage the party went on so long that the band and their friends finally came out to play in a blaze of excitement and a heavy accumulation of controlled substances. But on stage all of them immediately became the stars that they were, and after I’d made sure that everybody was playing and the sound to the van was working I went out front and looked up at the stage. Here was one of the greatest line-ups of San Francisco’s musicians I had ever seen—and each of them was into his own stage personality. Jorma was bent over his guitar, Steve was swaying up and down, Jerry was studying his strings, Joe was half-smiling, Barry was striding around his end of the stage. It was as much show business as music, and at that moment I realized how far we all had come since I’d first seen everybody playing in Berkeley parks and in little clubs only a few years before. I don’t remember that everybody ever got in tune. I don’t remember that most of the time the rhythm was that tight, but it didn’t matter. It was one of those moments of the ’60s that would never come again—and listening to it again after all these years, brings back that moment and so much of the mood of those chaotic years.
As in all “jams,” they are much more stimulating live, but we felt this was a good example of the spontaneous musical get-togethers that happened regularly at shows in the City, with all the sound imperfections and infectious excitement left intact. Bill Belmont
THE LIFE & TIMES OF COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH From Haight Ashbury to Woodstock THE COLLECTED COUNTRY JOE & THE FISH (1965-1970) TOGETHER
When I look back on the last few months that Country Joe & The Fish were still trying to keep the band together and go on touring I remember all the confusion and all the arguments and all the exasperation—but also I remember so many nights when they played with all their old magic and uniqueness. Since I’d been working with them for four years as their producer for Vanguard Records, I wanted to try to capture some of these last moments on tape, I with engineer Ed Friedner—who had worked with me on the albums they did in New York—I stalked them for a number of nights on the last gigs.

Rock and roll stars are not like us common folk. We have friends. They have FRIENDS. So when Country Joe & The Fish held a concert in 1969 to bid farewell to their most famous line-up, Bay Area rock and roll royalty showed up in droves. First of all, Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady took the place of the recently departed Bruce Barthol for the entire night. Then Big Brother’s David Getz showed up for “It’s So Nice to Have Your Love.” But that was all mere prelude for the 38-minute “Donovan’s Reef Jam,” which featured the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart on drums and Jerry Garcia on guitar, plus Casady’s Airplane band mate Jorma Kaukonen on guitar and Steve Miller on harp! This characteristically ramshackle, excellently recorded show—which also features Fish favorites like “Love” and “Flying High”—was previously released on wax only in Italy (!) back in 2000, and it comes to you here pressed in yellow vinyl to commemorate the concert’s 50th “Golden” Anniversary, housed inside a 6-panel, double-gatefold jacket sporting notes by original producer Sam Charters and reissue producer Bill Belmont. The Mamas and The Papas The Complete Singles (2-LP Set) STREET DATE: DECEMBER 6, 2019 With the debut of their first hit, “California Dreamin’,” on the charts, The Mamas and The Papas proclaimed themselves to be a potent new force in the burgeoning West Coast folk-rock movement, announcing to the world that something special and beautiful was happening in California. Real Gone Music celebrates the group’s very special legacy by releasing The Mamas and The Papas: The Complete Singles, a two-LP, 31-track set that brings together on vinyl for the first time since their original 45 rpm release the A and B side of every single the group released, all in their impossible-to-find mono single mixes. Remastered by Aaron Kannowski, the engineer responsible for Real Gone’s acclaimed collections of singles by fellow Dunhill label acts The Grass Roots and Steppenwolf, the set includes notes by CoProducer Ed Osborne that feature quotes drawn from extended interviews with Mama Michelle Phillips and Dunhill label head and producer Lou Adler, while the package also includes a number of rarely-seen images of this eminently photographable band. Many of the single mixes haven’t been available on vinyl since the release of this collection; over the course of listening to this set you’re going to hear such legendary songs as “Monday, Monday,” “California Dreamin’,” “Creeque Alley,” “I Saw Her Again,” “Words of Love,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “Glad to Be Unhappy,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” and “It’s Getting Better” exactly as folks heard them over the radio back in those halcyon days. Due to the unfortunate situation with the Dunhill single master tape reels (supposedly thrown out at the behest of one of the label’s owners), Mamas and Papas fans had despaired of ever hearing the group’s original singles on LP. Now, after countless hours spent tracking down sources, Real Gone Music is proud to release the most significant vinyl addition to The Mamas and The Papas discography in years.

“My dad chose set lists for the two nights that I hadn’t heard before. He was always brilliant in choosing the right sets, but this time he shied away from the tried and true and went to places musically that were very different. It was as if he knew that he didn’t have to prove anything anymore and could relax and go wherever he wanted and enjoy it. I think the end result proves just that. For two incredible nights I got to sit in the audience and cheer right along with everyone else. I will always remember that time as one of the greatest moments in my life. Now I can revel in the fact that, thankfully, his last recordings were caught on tape for all of us to enjoy forever. It has taken thirty-three years to finally get these recordings out. An absolute labor of love that I never gave up on. At times it was quite a struggle, but in the end it was all about the music.” Cathy Rich - from the liner notes.

Aaron Funk's hallmarks were there from the start. His absurdist sense of humour, the razor sharp edits and his use of odd time-signatures. There is a rawness here, not often captured on later records, where you can imagine Aaron playing live in front of a room full of young breakcore fanatics. Indeed most of the tracks here were recorded live, tweaking his effects and EQ on the fly, to DAT from his Amiga. The album opens with "Personal Discourse", recorded in 1997, which samples Aaron calling into a Dominatrix live on community cable TV, while "Fuck A Stranger In The Ass" samples from the film The Big Lebowski. The track "Aqap" has a different sound to the others having been recorded later, in 1998, on Aaron's first PC. We have also added three hitherto unreleased 1997 tracks to this reissue. Two of them "Eating America.." and "Punk Kids" appeared on Venetian Snares rare selfreleased 1998 cassette Spells and the long sought after "Milk" was only passed around by his friends. Greg Hates Car Culture lets you hear the raw energy of a musician at the birth of his sound.

Topping off Hyperdub's 15th year, Burial selects 'tunes’ from the last eight years of his EP releases on the label, for this very welcome two CD collection. Sequenced by Burial, ‘Tunes 2011-2019’ shows the depth and brilliance of his post-‘Untrue’ development; from long, twisting, collage works which travel through unexpected zones, to a more pointed, poppier side, and back again to the haunted, open horizons of his beatless pieces. We hope this collection of Burial's work is familiar, yet unfamiliar, to each listener. 17 tracks across 150 minutes, all previously released, six being available on CD for the first time. DISC 1

HARISH RAGHAVAN CALLS FOR ACTION
Double bassist Harish Raghavan’s debut album as leader, ‘Calls for Action’, delivers the fundamental essence of jazz as a progressive, evolutionary art form. His markedly lithe quintet features a band of bright new stars, including alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist Micah Thomas, vibraphonist Joel Ross and drummer Kweku Sumbry. Since arriving to New York from Illinois by way of California in 2007, Raghavan has recorded and toured with numerous artists including Ambrose Akinmusire, Kurt Elling, Taylor Eigsti, Vijay Iyer, Charles Lloyd, Walter Smith III, Logan Richardson and Eric Harland.

The group’s connection on ‘Calls For Action’ is tangible across this program of originals. “Once tunes became second nature, we could deconstruct them. Much of the music comes from my own improvisations on bass, expanded to a quintet format. The album title alludes to that evolution: a wake up call. Like a tune where each section changes and dramatically shifts the energy of the piece. In recording, I wanted to capture the energy of the band playing live.”
Following his bass intro, Raghavan’s first four tracks represent a suite unto itself, and the earliest material written for the quintet. Feel the pulsating momentum of “Newe”, where shared alto saxophone and vibraphone lines sparkle over the leader’s bass-led melody and relish “Sangeet”, conjuring the euphoria of his recent wedding. ‘Los Angeles’ evokes a cityscape’s afterglow with elegant, sustained phrases and percussive flair; and the other tracks include the yearning “I’ll Go and Come Back” (a loose translation of ‘Goodbye’ from Raghavan’s parents’ mother tongue of Tamil) references his thoughts on an older generation moving on. ”I tried to create pieces that would allow the band to explore as a whole but also allow the members total freedom to interpret,” explains Raghavan. The vitality of ‘Calls for Action’ is unquestionably testament to all that. Personnel: Harish Raghavan (double bass), Immanuel Wilkins (alto saxophone), Micah Thomas (piano), Joel Ross (vibraphone), Kweku Sumbry (drums)

DeForrest Brown Jr. is an outspoken theorist, journalist, curator, visual artist, and by necessity, a musician. He often collaborates with his partner Ting Ding who co-runs the sustainable gender-flexible apparel line HECHA/ . Raised in the deep South, DeForrest moved to New York a few years back and has been shaking things up IRL and online ever since. Brown Jr. asks difficult questions that make us relook at how we think about race, class, post-racial ideas, historical events and the social structures in America. His work defies narrow bags and he’s truly a unique cultural polygot comfortable booking an artist like Felicia Atkinson at Issue Project Room or shaking up people on the street with his “Make Techno Black Again” hat line. His music project Speaker Music was inspired by Rhythmanalysis, a book of essays by urbanist philosopher Henri Lefebvre as well as considerations of momentum and the “chronopolitical” from British cultural theorist Kodwo Eshun.
Side A: With Empathy Side B: Without Excess
Mobilizing freely improvised electronic percussion and stereophonic audio recordings, Speaker Music yearns to caress, engineer, and sculpt sentiment into a multi-textural rhythmic body, quivering moments into a collapsed “nonpulsed time.” His debut album for Planet Mu centers around weary sonic portraiture of sonorous and cybernetic energy music – a music encoded with an encrypted heat but made “with empathy and without excess.” His “touching of frequencies” unveils a romantic abstraction of sonic narratives that recalls previous innovations by musicians such as Les McCann, Urban Tribe and James Stinson. DeForrest Brown Jr. will be present at Unsound Festival in October at which he’ll be launching a new publication w/ Primary Information. He will also present a special event at respected New York art gallery Artist Space on Friday December 13th at which he’ll be launching a book related to the album. Additional dates will happen between October and next Spring. A video will also be launched when the album is announced in early October

Composer and producer Andy Dragazis has announced his debut album “Afterimages”, set to be released on Dragazis’ own label, Lightwell Recordings, on 06 December. Dragazis is perhaps best known for his albums under the Blue States moniker including the downtempo classic “Nothing Changes Under The Sun”. “Afterimages” is an ambient album at heart, with its title inspired by phosphenes - the sensation of seeing patterns and light when we close our eyes. The ten tracks combine experimental synthesis with a string quartet, blurring the lines of electronic and orchestral soundscape. The album evokes the spirit of meditative chamber music by combining fragile string orchestration with waves of electronic drones and scratchy percussion to create something wonderfully idiosyncratic. First taster from the album, “For The Learner”, is out now, featuring a brooding opening that builds with soaring strings melding with electronic wobbles and percussion. The self-reflective track title echoes the feeling of imposter-syndrome that many in the arts experience. A feeling that oddly increases rather than subsides with experience, “For The Learner” is an envious nod to a younger, greener but more care-free self. From the heartfelt, barren strings of “Butterfly Mind” to the dense grandeur of “Wavelet”, “Afterimages” is an album where lo-fi and minimal meets widescreen, influenced by composers such as Ben Frost, Colin Stetson and the Erased Tapes label. Recorded at Dragazis’ London-based Lightwell studios as an antithesis to the noise pollution of his surroundings, “Afterimages” is an immersive album full of subtle beauty and light. “Afterimages” is released 06 December 2019 via Lightwell Recordings.
“Three guys who are the foundation to the UK hip-hop scene and the foundation to UK rap music in general” — Twin B (BBC 1Xtra) “Part of the foundation of what we do here at 1Xtra.” — Ace (BBC 1Xtra) “That right there was a powerful Fire in the Booth, real serious MCs – that was epic!” - Charlie Sloth (Beats 1/Fire in the Booth) “Godfather of British hip-hop” [Rodney P] — Romesh Ranganathan
KINGDEM - Rodney P, Ty and Blak Twang, a brand new supergroup formed of UK hip-hop heavyweights and a trio who need little introducing. London Posse affiliate and all-round Godfather of British hip-hop: Rodney P links up one of UK Black music’s true innovators and popularisers: Ty, and the original South-London colloquial hip-hop geezer: Blak Twang, to deliver a fresh future bass anthem that is rooted in their artists legacy to the UK hip-hop canon. Fresh off the back of a “powerful” Fire In The Booth with Charlie Sloth (Beats 1) — KINGDEM fill in the missing chapters of UK hip-hop’s history: “The UK hip-hop scene has gone way underground – so we set up KINGDEM to let artists come up from behind us. We want the next generation to know that they don’t need to be chasing that grime sound, that rap sound. I think a lot of young people just don’t know we ever existed and assume that hip-hop in the UK started in the early ‘00s when grime came out”, Rodney P explains. “We made it easier for the grime scene to come out and use their own accents. We paved the way to make people have an understanding and respect of the UK accent, this UK vernacular in the music.”

Released December 6th, “Party Girl” sees the Zero dB classic track come to 12” vinyl, joined by remixes from innovative UK producer Fixate AKA Declan Curran and Jungle/DnB pioneer and one half of 4hero Marc Mac. Originally released on 2010’s ‘One Offs, Remixes and B Sides’ “Party Girl” (née “Come Party”) sits alongside an overdue reworkings that tip their hat to DnB and Broken Beat culture. Speaking of the re-release of “Party Girl”, Tru Thoughts A&R and co-founder Robert Luis said: “I have always been a big fan of Zero dB and the track was a big anthem at the original Tru Thoughts Brighton club night phonic:hoop and still gets regular plays by me today. At Tru Thoughts we had been working the publishing for the track in recent years and recently it got synched to a car advert and we feel that was a good excuse to commission some new remixes for some new interpretations and a new re-release on Tru Thoughts.” Zero dB AKA Chris Vogado and Neil Combstock, have been keeping busy at the cutting edge since the release of their seminal ‘Bongos, Beeps & Basslines’ (Ninja Tune), making killer club music under various monikers, and packing out dance floors with DJ sets in some of the biggest clubs and best sound systems known to man, including Plastic People and Japan’s Club Yellow. Vogado runs the boutique Fluid Ounce label from his legendary Fl. Oz. Studios and Combstock has also seen his muse lead him round the globe, living, DJing and making music variously in Japan and Thailand among other places. ‘One Offs, Remixes and B Sides’ has become an essential listen not just for existing fans of Zero dB’s unique concoction of Latin heat, jazz colour, startling beats and pure bassline filth, but for anyone who has been remotely moved by dance music in the last half decade.

Now available on CD. “This double length release, sumptuously packaged with the artist’s own graphics, finds the erstwhile Stephen Bird applying his characteristically left-field sensibilities to the tangled roots of folklore; as paradoxical as that might appear, in practice the approach makes perfect sense“ Hugh Gulland, Vive Le Rock. “Looking for something that reflects the current obsession with Folk Horror, but recognises the passage of time, feels true and tries to make sense of it all in 2019? You got it. Looking for a simply great record? You got it. Now get it.” Louder Than War “Jowe has a deep sing-speak voice, which he utilises to great effect, throughout this eclectic album. It’s a real grower of an album, packed full of interesting songs.” Andrew Young, Ptolemaic Terrascope 1.Lyke- Wake Dirge 2.Tankerton Bay 3.Minotaur Song 4.Nottamun Town 5.Ode to Krampus 6.Extraterrestrials 7.Extras 8.Joseph Cornell 9.Tom O Bedlam 10.Gower Song 11.Trees 12.Baba Yaga 13.HalfBike 14.Ein Stuhl In Der Holle 15.King Of The Corn 16.Long Live the Sun 17.Two Ravens 18.Bolweevil Holler 19.Shepherd's Lament

Gatefold sleeve, blue 180g vinyl. Recorded as an instrumental and originally released on LP in 1972, “Shubunkin” has now been sampled by LA band Broken Bells as the basis of their track “To Anyone a Ghost”. Julian Cope writes about the Tractor track “Shubunkin” :...“Then, one night in mid 1972, John Peel played a track that was more mysterious than almost anything I had ever heard. It was the music I thereafter wanted played at my funeral and was most certainly the sound of a soul approaching the canopy of heaven as it left the earth for the last time.” The album now starts the way Julian Cope always wanted to run. Side 1: Shubunkin, Hope In Favour, Everytime It Happens, Make The Journey. Side 2: Watching White Stars, Little Girl In Yellow, Mr Revolution Man, Northern City, All Ends Up

Gatefold sleeve 180g vinyl. 21 tracks on LP of Synth and Electronic Recording exchanges between Delia Derbyshire and Martin Hannett. Forty years since Martin Hannett first used synths and electronic sound effects in production work on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, this album looks at 21 tracks of electronic and synth music that Hannett had compiled in the the mid 70s to early 80s whilst exchanging tapes by post with electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire. The compiled work from the two electronic music geniuses was to have been released by Hannett but was shelved in the early 80s. Here it is as he put it together for the planned album.

OVERVIEW Daniel Lopatin returns with his latest score for A24/The Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems out December 13 on Warp Records. Rapturously received by critics and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Uncut Gems features token pulp action, starring Adam Sandler (in an outstanding career performance) as well as NBA star Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield, The Weeknd and more. The hypnotic crime thriller follows Sandler’s Howard Ratner in a twisted odyssey through the New York jewelry market, a charismatic man on the brink always on the lookout for the next big score. This is the second collaboration between Daniel Lopatin and the Safdie brothers following the highly acclaimed work for ‘Good Time’, winner of the Best Soundtrack Award at Cannes and the Best Original Score for a Feature Film at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. At Cannes the composer was in competition with the likes of Jonny Greenwood, Jed Kurzel and Ibrahim Maalouf and took home the celebrated prize. His other film scores include Ariel Kleiman Partisan (2015), and Sofia Coppola Bling Ring (2013). Uncut Gems is his first work recorded at Gaia Studios, the artist’s new base in Brooklyn, NY.

After being blown away by a few tunes – probably just as you will be after listening to this – Samy Ben Redjeb travelled to the infamous capital city of Somalia in November of 2016, making Analog Africa the first music label to set foot in Mogadishu. Mogadisco was not Analog Africa’s easiest project. Tracking down the musicians – often in exile in the diaspora – to interview them and gather anecdotes of golden-era Mogadishu has been an undertaking that took three years. Tales of Dur-Dur Band’s kidnapping, movie soundtracks recorded in the basements of hotels, musicians getting electrocuted on stage, others jumping from one band to another under dramatic circumstances, and soul singers competing against each other, are all stories included in the massive booklet that accompanies the compilation - adorned with no less than 50 pictures from the `70s and `80s.

Featuring Performances by LUCINDA WILLIAMS, GENE CLARK, PERCY SLEDGE, RICHIE FURAY, JOHN STEWART, CARLA OLSON and more True Voices is an album of songs by iconoclastic songwriters performed by iconoclastic artists. This edition adds 6 performances including the newly recorded “Ode To L.A. While Thinking Of Brian Jones, Deceased” by Johnny Indovina of Human Drama. This was originally a poem that Jim Morrison wrote in tribute to Brian Jones. Carla Olson was given permission by the Morrison estate to compose the music. Quite a few of the artists who contributed to the album have also since departed and a trio of songs they have written were added: Percy Sledge’s take on Jackie Lomax’s “Fall Inside Your Eyes” from Jackie’s Apple album debut, John York’s version of P.F. Sloan’s “Upon A Painted Ocean” and Richie Furay’s cover of Gene Clark’s classic “She Don’t Care About Time.” In all, 12 of the 17 recordings are not available elsewhere and were recorded exclusively for True Voices. Among the standouts: » “Surrender,” the Tom Petty song, by Phil Seymour backed by 20/20. » “Are You Lonely For Me Baby,” the Freddie Scott hit written by Bert Berns and delivered here by Paul Jones of Manfred Mann. » “Changes,” written by Phil Ochs, covered by Gene Clark. » “(Thank You) For Being Here.” The only existing Brian Jones song! The vocal is by Krysia Kristianne aka Krysia Kocjan of the Natural Acoustic Band with all instruments played by Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band. » “At The End Of The Day,” Sandy Denny’s gorgeous ballad, is performed by Susan Cowsill with Eric Johnson on guitar and piano.
» Reissue of Classic ’90s Capitol Records release w/6 added performances » Featuring performances by P.F. Sloan, Susan Cowsill, Pat Robinson, Percy Sledge, Richie Furay, Gene Clark, Jackie Lomax & Lucinda Williams » Songs written by Tim Buckley, Tom Petty, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones, Bobby Darin, Del Shannon » Includes the only recorded version of the Jim Morrison song “Ode To L.A. While Thinking Of Brian James”

You Scream A Rapid Language Five pieces blending chamber music, avant-garde jazz, extreme metal, and experimental literature
YOU SCREAM A RAPID LANGUAGE collects recent solo and small-group compositions by bassist/composer James Ilgenfritz. Terminal Affirmative (2014) pounds out maximalist speed metal shredding for violin and double-pedal bass drum, Apophenia III: The Index (2016) uses words from literary experimentalist J. G. Ballard to give a fragmented narrative of a life filled with secrets (told with violin, prepared piano, and two-handed tapping on an electric a guitar going through a talk box), while Apophenia IV: A Bell In Every Finger (2018) uses the late Steve Dalachinsky’s poetry about avant-garde pianists/composers Cecil Taylor and Muhal Richard Abrams to generate another fragmented narrative. How To Talk To Your Children About Not Looking At The Eclipse (2018) blends avant-jazz phrasing with a plethora of extended techniques for solo flute, while Fanfares For Modest Accomplishments (2014) revels in restraint and focused energy. With star appearances by pianists Kathleen Supové and Joseph Kubera, the violin duo String Noise (Violent Femmes’s Gordon Gano, Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier), Thomas Buckner (Roscoe Mitchell, Robert Ashley), and William Winant (Mr Bungle, John Zorn), the album pits rare talents of diverse artists against each other.
