The Daktaris is a well-disciplined army of two hundred African Bull Elephants marching relentlessly up your business to the beat from Funky Drummer. Or so began the liner notes on the original pressing of this album.

Truth is often stranger than fiction. In 1998 Desco Records— a precursor to Daptone and Soul Fire records—released The Daktaris’ Soul Explosion, ostensibly as a reissue of an unearthed Nigerian LP from the seventies. Though it ’s now common knowledge that the stor y was a bit of a hoax, the record’s significance as a seminal part of the Afrobeat and afro-funk renaissance of the last t wo decades cannot be denied. The roots of the Budos Band, Antibalas, and uncountable others can be traced back to this enigmatic afro-funk release.

Now, t wo decades later, Daptone has remastered the album from the original tapes, including a bonus track that had previously only been available on a 45, and featuring extensive all new liner notes by Bosco Mann telling the bizarre true stor y behind the Daktaris sessions.

Our new guitarist Linz (The Marassa) has definitely helped us out in terms of filling out our sonic attack and helped bring more blazing thrash sections & thicker riffs. Zel (Ogoun) spent hours crafting the drum parts and researching the different tribes and regions each beat comes from, and obsessively listening to Afrobeat records to pull out anything from a rhythm to a horn phrasing for inspiration. Everything was more thought out for this second album and meticulously crafted – we even gave ourselves more time in the studio!

Soul Jazz Records’ new release ‘Soul of A Nation: Jazz is the Teacher, Funk is the Preacher’ is a powerful collection of radical jazz, street funk and proto-rap made in the era of Black Power (1969-75).

1. Art Ensemble Of Chicago –

This is the second ‘Soul of A Nation’ album released by Soul Jazz Records and coincides with the exhibition ‘Soul of a Nation – Art in the Age of Black Power’ currently at the Brooklyn Museum in New York and which moves to Los Angeles at The Broad in spring 2019. The international exhibition was critically received when it was launched last year at the Tate Modern in London (as was the accompanying first album ‘Soul of A Nation – Afro-Centric Visions in the Age of Black Power 1968-79’).

2. The Har-You Percussion

This new album features a number of important and ground-breaking African-American artists – The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Don Cherry, Funkadelic, Gil Scott-Heron and more – alongside a host of lesser-known artists all of whom in the early 1970s were exploring new Afro-Centric poly-rhythmical styles of music – radical jazz, street funk and proto-rap – while at the same time exploring the Black Power and civil-rights inspired notions of self-definition, self-respect and self-empowerment in their own lives.

4. Baby Huey – Hard Times

During this era African-American jazz musicians ripped up traditional definitions – rejecting the term ‘entertainer’ to redefine themselves instead as ‘artists’. They worked outside of the mainstream music industry perceiving this artistic relationship to be fundamentally exploitative and politically flawed. Artists instead formed their own pan-arts community-centric collectives, set up their own record labels, ran concerts in alternative performance spaces – art galleries, parks, lofts, community centres – all as a way of taking control of their own creative destinies.

At the start of 1960s jazz musicians had embarked on an intense period of musical experimentation as artists John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry sought to dismantle the traditional definitions of jazz by creating new music that broke free from its establishment shackles.

By the end of the 1960s and into the 1970s, forward-thinking African-American jazz musicians had absorbed the ideas of this radical and avant-garde path but also began to introduce many new elements – not just civil rights concepts of freedom but also black power ideas of self-respect, righteousness and anger. Their music developed into a radical and intense Afro-Centric mix of jazz, funk, soul, and street poetry all in search of a new musical language that could better represent artistic African-American cultural expression.

All of the featured artists here were involved in this search in different ways; a shared sense of Afro-centric collectivism joined the dots between the deep avant-garde experimentalism of The Art Ensemble of Chicago (here featuring soul singer Fontella Bass singing the powerful ‘Theme de Yoyo’) to the hyper-funk psychedelia of George Clinton’s Funkadelic. The poetry of Gil Scott-Heron and Sarah Webster Fabio is performed with a backdrop of street funk and heavyweight percussion – in the process laying down the template for the birth of rap. The Har-You Percussion Group, which grew of a government-sponsored community project in Harlem in the 1960s, connect latin, jazz and funk rhythms; Byron Morris and Unity offer an intense and rhythmical journey. James Mason, Gary Bartz and The Oneness of Juju offer spirituality and cosmology in equal measures. Chicago’s The Pharaohs and Detroit’s collective Tribe add deep jazz and street funk in equal measures. And more besides!

This is the second collection of music from Venezuela in the 1970s and beyond to be released on Soul Jazz Records. The album once again features innovative figures in the history of underground Venezuelan music, mostly unknown outside of their home country – their music a blending of progressive rock, jazz, experimental electronics and disco created mainly in the 1970s during a time when the country was both a cultural and economic powerhouse in Latin America.

While much of 1960s Venezuelan rock music emulated British and USA styles, and salsa dominated the dancefloors of Latin America, the 1970s saw the evolution of a new generation of creative local artists such as Vytas Brenner, Daniel Grau, Aldemaro Romero, Un Dos Tres Y Fuera who all explored the possibilities of mixing together rock with elements of electronica, funk, jazz, latin rhythms simultaneously exploring their links with Venezuelan roots music, creating a new sound which blended a multitude of new and old world influences, uniquely Venezuelan.

Most of these artists featured on Venezuela 70 remain practically unknown outside of Venezuela’s borders and yet their progressive forward-thinking music is some of the most sophisticated in the world – a stunning ‘melting pot’ mix of sounds from the cosmic and psychedelic rock of Vytas Brenner to the Moroder-esque disco experimentation of Daniel Grau, and the tropical funk of Un Dos Tres Y Fuera and beyond.

Aside from the relatively known Vytas Brenner and Daniel Grau, most of the music on this album is incredibly rare (even in Venezuela)! The album is released as heavy double gatefold vinyl with full colour inners, exclusive text on artwork, CD with slipcase and large booklet, and digital album.

Astonishingly considering their 50 year career scoring for radio and television, this is the first time The Radiophonic Workshop have ever scored a feature film for theatrical release or collaborated on a major score together. They’ve risen to the challenge admirably, concocting a soundtrack that mixes pastoral flute with dread synth tones and bowed percussion that connects this to England’s hidden reverse of Coil as much as the masters of Italian Giallo soundtracks. Housed in a beautiful 6-panel sleeve designed by Julian House (Ghost Box Records/Children Of Alice), the soundtrack includes all the cues from the feature film as well as 9 bonus tracks. The soundtrack features sound elements and drones from the Delia Derbyshire archives, the pioneering producer of the original ​Doctor Who ​signature tune. These sound elements, discovered in boxes of tapes in the late composer’s attic, have been restored and used in the foundations of the soundtrack and sound design.

Possum​ is the directorial debut of Matthew Holness (best known for co-writing and playing the title role in ​Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace​). The film stars Sean Harris and Alun Armstrong, telling the story of a disgraced children’s puppeteer who returns to his childhood home and is forced to confront his wicked stepfather and the secrets that have tortured him his entire life.

An uncompromising and unconventional debut album that explores the collective psyches and diverse influences of its renowned members. Over a 4-year collaborative timeline, Steve Jansen, Charlie Storm and Thomas Feiner have contributed in multiinstrumentalist capacities and Ulf Jansson has focused on piano and keyboards. All the instruments one associates with the world of rock are involved, but employed within an eclectic mindset. The recording also features trumpet, harmonium and a string quintet. Legendary jazz bassist Lars Danielsson contributes upright bass. Feiner’s deep, rich vocals are vivid and emotional. They pair perfectly with the recording’s spectral qualities, incorporating the ambient and orchestral. Full of layers and complex lyrical turns of phrase, the record requires an investment to absorb. It also includes an instrumental in “North” that finds Jansson conveying melodic intrigue in the absence of a voice. A co-writing partnership first formed when Feiner worked with Jansen on his 2007 solo album Slope. Feiner was already partnering with Jansson on other projects and brought him into the fold. Feiner then invited renowned Swedish producer and engineer Charles Storm to join. Everyone felt a sense of trust, shared experiences and camaraderie that informed their sessions. “The creative process for us is successful because we can communicate progress in composition and structure without being too precious about personal choices,” said Jansen.

“The tracks have been through a number of changes and this process of raising the bar was only achieved by never resting on our laurels or believing one person’s own way is the best way. It’s truly a collaborative band in that sense. ” Exit North is truly about generating an aural gravity that pulls the best out of its participants. Throughout the 1980s Malka Spigel was the bassist and vocalist with influential post punk band Minimal Compact. By 1988 the band had dissolved. Released in 1993, Rosh Ballata was a quantum leap forward from anything she had created before. The album takes its cue from the worlds of shoegaze and trip hop, yet it wears these influences very lightly. More significantly, unlike every other indie record of the era, it would be sung in Hebrew. The over-riding mood is one of optimism and unfolding possibilities. This is typified by the sun-drenched glide of Besof Heyom, which comes over like the soundtrack to an infinite hazy summer, whilst the skipping rhythms of Lisgor Sipor Yashan might almost suggest Kylie Minogue in a parallel world! There are moments of shade too, such as the brooding psychedelic drift of Yestiney or the mesmeric metallic art pop of Rotsa Ladat Od. Spigel worked closely with Wire main-man Colin Newman with input from former Minimal Compact colleague Samy Birnbach - who also wrote the lyrics to two songs. 2 songs feature texts by the poets Anton Shammas and Dahlia Ravikovich. Nordra is the solo project of composer, programmer, and activist Monika Khot, who is also half of the avant noise/prog duo Zen Mother. As Nordra, Khot uses guitar, trumpet, voice, synthesizers, and other electronic and acoustic instruments to craft exploratory, inquisitive music that is both cerebral and soulful, combining post-industrial elements with musique concrète and gently melodic ambience.

PYLON II is an original score composed for an immersive performance choreographed by Coleman Pester for the 9e2 festival of technologically-driven art. This multimedia piece uses architectural design and live surveillance feeds to probe the dynamic relationship between observation and consent. Nordra’s riveting score captures perfectly the tension between the vulnerability of embodiment and the dystopian apathy of the technological gaze, subtly raising questions about control and complicity through the lens of its own deftly manipulated simulacrum.

ABOUT “FIELD MUSIC”: A fluid dream logic runs deep in William Fowler Collins’ “Field Music”. The New Mexican composer of dark minimalism has long centered his practices upon the slow burn of the drone through guitar, electronics, etc. That remains the case for Field Music, with Collins extending his strategies through compositional exercises into rhythm and a diverse array of conceptual signposts that push his work along unfixed, sometime oppositional directions. The idea of ‘field music’ can relate to the archaic use of military drum corps in battle, whose patter Collins has intermingled with the polyrhythms associated with Voodoo ritual. Collins also proposes that the ‘field’ be defined as the physical self as gleaned from his secular readings of the Bhagavad Gita. The ‘field’ as the fabric of time and space also becomes a possibility when Collins literally wraps this album in the history of the atomic bomb, as the cover photo portrays the humble ranch where the first nuclear weapon was assembled.

Field Music grounds itself upon sustained tones that churn through controlled oscillations as the fundamentals to activate a trance-state in the listener. Out of this, Collins introduces hypnotic machine-looped convulsions and almost EVP-like disembodied voices on “Contact Is A Mother” as well as those aforementioned polyrhythms that ripple across the title track. He pushes a motorik thump to the foreground of “They Wept Together” to the glowing dilation of foreboding ambience, running parallel to the restrictive strategies of Wolfgang Voigt.

The subtle complexities of Field Music address the primal nature of rhythm in connection with the body and the building blocks of energy, matter, and consciousness.

Fans of Eliane Radigue, Christophe Heemann, and Demdike Stare would be well served to investigate Field Music.

ROBERT HOOD DJ-KICKS Detroit’s pioneering techno giant Robert Hood is next to take the reins of the DJ-Kicks mix series. His timeless 22 track offering includes four of his own new exclusives, and will come on CD as well as with a 2 x 12” vinyl sampler in winter 2018.

It’s hard to talk about techno without Robert Hood. The Motor City mainstay was a founding member of the pivotal Underground Resistance with Mad Mike Banks and Jeff Mills, and then went on to lay down a blueprint for minimal techno which continues to make an impact to this day. As Floorplan, of course, he veers into more funky and melodic house and techno, often with a gospel overtone that lead to rapturous receptions on dance floors around the world.

But the techno he makes as Robert Hood is what he is best known for. It has come on his own M Plant label, as well as vital outlets like Tresor, Peacefrog and Dekmantel, where 2017’s Paradygm Shift album proved that, 25 years after first starting out, he is still a force unto himself. The record was a return to the roots of his definitive Minimal Nation LP in 1994, and was filled with the sort of expert melodic loops, scintillating drums and hypnotic sense of repetition

that only a few can master: making such simple yet effective music is a skill that Hood has made all his own.

Strut present the first ever international reissue of in-demand ‘80s zouk LP ‘Las Palé’

by Feeling Kréyol, out of Guadeloupe.

Producer Darius Denon explains: “This was 1988 and bands like Zouk Machine and Kassav were huge. I had met producer Frankie Brumier when I was performing at festivals and parties and he wanted to record a girl group so we began scouting venues, mainly around the Grande-Terre district in the island’s capital, Pointe-à-Pitre. I ran auditions and picked out the best three voices – Fabienne, Leïla and Yolande. One was singing in a choir and none of them had met each other previously.”

Recording at a studio in Le Gosier, Denon trained them to sing the songs and spent around 6 weeks recording the album: “I gave them a couple of compositions that I had planned for my own solo album. I remember that we all got on really well; the sessions were fun.”

The title track ‘Las Palé’ was the lead track pushed as a single and achieved modest success domestically. The band did a few promotional performances in the island’s discotheques but, in the end, the album stalled. “Studios were expensive and there was

no cheap technology as we have now. So, the producer ended up cutting corners with the production – the mix was not completely finished and the voices were not synchronised

CUTS, the audio-visual project of composer and filmmaker Anthony Tombling Jr, will release his debut album ‘A Gradual Decline’ through Village Green Recordings on 30th November. The album will be preceded by a new EP, entitled ‘A Slow Decay’, on 5th October.

Summoning 11 widescreen, electronic compositions in response to global political and environmental breakdown, ‘A Gradual Decline’ addresses the planet’s current fragility using actual field recordings of ice collapsing from glaciers. Weaving these momentary, dramatic events directly into the DNA of the music, CUTS has sculpted rhythmic elements out of geological transformation.

“We are living in the age of the Anthropocene and it feels like everything is in decline,” reflects Anthony. ”We’re in a moment where extinction is regular. I wanted this record to reflect these frailties.”

A stark sense of urgency permeates ‘A Gradual Decline’. At times chaotic and alarming, the album’s siren-like tones and volatile, stuttered beats converge with synthetic gales of melody and glacial percussion.

Elsewhere, the sense of precariousness is subtler, enveloped in gaseous chords that swell and evaporate, ethereal and dense guitars and distant vocals – all hallmarks of previous CUTS material - here honed into a concise, conceptual set.

“I have tried to make a record that feels like it’s all come from one place,” explains Tombling Jr. “My only musical influence on this was William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’. Not the music, but the process.

The idea of a decline in sound really suited the concept of this record. All this music and instrumentation trapped in this declining digital signal.

I wanted it to sound brittle and precarious. I also wanted to avoid doing overly dark material, opting instead for something that was more fragile, melancholic and even hopeful in moments.“ CUTS signed to Village Green Recordings earlier this year and released the double EP ‘EXIST’ in April. The EP featured the track ‘Bunsen Burner’, which can be heard in the memorable climactic scene of Alex Garland’s Ivor Novello-winning sci-fi masterpiece, ‘Ex Machina’. Tombling Jr’s composition was also used in the finale of JJ Abram’s cult TV show, ‘Person Of Interest’. Taken from the same double EP, ‘Dream Voyager’ was remixed by shoegaze legends Slowdive and Village Green label mate, Ben Chatwin.

CUTS has performed at ATP, Simple Things, Drill Festival and played with Fuck Buttons, James Holden, Haxan Cloak and Wire.

When precisely Ali Hassan Kuban’s legendary recordings, released internationally by Piranha in 1988, were made, nobody knows any more. What we do know, recordings had taken place at Delta Sound S.A. in Cairo – with the orchestra’s entire line-up circled around the only working microphone at hand. The tracks had been travelling in the Arab world on two audio-cassettes afterwards and accompanied his rise from a local superstar to a musical innovator of new, vibrant, international Pop. When the Godfather of Nubian Soul made his entry into old Europe via the Heimatklänge night parties of the days perfectly – just as perfectly as the thousands and thousands of Nubian weddings he played until his death.

Ancient Nubian melodies played on a background of pulsating Western beats and sounds that draw from American jazz and international pop – Ali Hassan Kuban served as one of the founding fathers of the musical breed which crushed the gates between the Global underground and Western pop: the old and the new! The weddings and the concert hall!

He was a colourful personality with a colourful story. Born in a small village in Upper Egypt, drowned soon like the whole Nubian motherland by the Assuan dam, young Ali Hassan Kuban had learned the clarinet and bagpipes intuitively and informally. Only after becoming part of the growing Nubian drift to the cities was he able to hone his natural musicianship into a professional skill. Starting out as an apprentice tailor in Cairo’s vibrant Abdin district, a traditional magnet for Nubians, he went on to master the pentatonic roots repertoire of black Egypt and became one of the most popular wedding musicians up and down the Nile.

And so it was until he overheard a band of jazz musicians from Harlem from the pavement outside the Gezira Sporting Club – then everything changed for real. In came the bass, keyboards and brass, the music got pop muscles and a funky beat. With a couple of huge domestic hits like ‘Sukkar Sukkar Sukkar’ and ‘Amira’, Ali Hassan Kuban, the former traditional wedding musician became a household name in Egypt. From this, he made his entry into the international festival circuit, playing after Heimatklänge at WOMAD, New York’s Central Park SummerStage and many more, establishing his reputation as a crucial forerunner and driver of the global music boom. Within those ranks, the realm of passing away at 72 in 2001, his star keeps shining brightly.
