OVERVIEW uknowhatimsayin¿ marks a buoyant new chapter in Danny’s career, a transitional and celebratory moment. His profile has grown since Atrocity and now armed with a cable TV show and a co-sign from one of rap’s icons, we will look to solidify his positioning as a ubiquitous entertainer, independent rap hero, and one of the essential cultural voices of this era, while still retaining the edgy, maverick style that makes him a fan-favorite. The album is executive produced by Q-Tip, and features production by Q-Tip, JPEGMAFIA, Flying Lotus, Paul White, Standing on the Corner and more.

6 In January 2019 I found myself stuck in a Chicago hotel room during the “Polar Vortex”. I was performing there with my duo Radnor & Lee over a few nights when temperatures dropped, leaving me unable to do much outside my hotel room for 4 days. Chicago is a city that holds a special history for me, and I found myself spending a good chunk of time staring out my hotel window, reflecting on my first trip there in 1993 to record my debut solo album “Grandpaw Would” at Idful Studios with Brad Wood. But more than the details of that trip, I was struck by how vividly memories started flooding back to me of being a 15 year old mega fan of music, and in particular, indie rock. I LIVED for the records that I loved and the bands who made them. I’m not sure you are ever a fan of bands the way you can be as a teenager. It’s pretty sacred. I started re-listening to some of my favorite songs from that period in that hotel room, by the Beat Happening, Pavement, Fugazi, The Breeders, Guided by Voices. It struck me as crazy that these songs and the feelings that accompanied them were now over 25 years old. It started seeming odd to me that for some reason, indie rock hasn’t been canonized the same way ‘60s and ‘70s rock has. After all, Dinosaur Jr were my Led Zeppelin, Sonic Youth were my Grateful Dead and Built to Spill were my Steve Miller Band. These were my classics! I always travel with my portable studio gear, and I immediately sat down and started learning and recording a collection of my favorite songs. I spent my 4 days of the 2019 Polar Vortex creating the blueprint for what would become Quarter Century Classix. When I got home to LA, I invited my friends Julianna Barwick, William Tyler and Mary Lattimore to my home studio to add their magic to my recordings as I knew they grew up in reverence of the same records I did. These three genius musicians became the “band” who you can hear framing these covers and I am eternally grateful for their talent and generosity. Later, Maria Taylor, Mike Watt, Petra Haden and Joey Waronker all showed up to play too. To some people these songs are just footnotes in pop culture history. But to me, they are the essence my own personal history. I wanted to make this record a tribute to these bands, to these songs, and to the irreversible way music can touch and transform the life of young person. I hope you enjoy Quarter Century Classix.

SPREAD THE FEELING is the sixth or seventh studio LP by the Pernice Brothers and my 17th or so in general. I’m honestly not sure. I don’t keep track. All I know is that if I play one song off each album at a gig, it’s a long show. The digital album will be available through Ashmont Records/Bandcamp on September 9, 2019. A limited number of vinyl LPs will be available for pre-order and sale through Ashmont Records. The proposed vinyl date is Oct. 15, 2019, give or take a few days. I recorded a full length Pernice Brothers record a few years back, but ditched it after it was mixed. Scrapping it had everything to do with me not liking the songs. The playing, the recording and mixing were fantastic to my ears. After letting the mixes sit for a while I revisited them for giggles. Still no dice, but there were a couple songs that were really good and deserved to be saved, unlike my soul. I holed up with engineer/musician extraordinaire Liam Jaeger in Toronto, and we reworked/mixed the songs worth the time. Then we kept recording new songs until SPREAD THE FEELING was done. (I am toying with releasing all my rejected recording on a double CD called SHITTY SONGS. For every copy you take, I give you $0.87. It’s the future winning model in the streaming age.) Eric Menck came up with the title. I think it was a peanut butter ad campaign slogan. If it wasn’t, it should be. I don’t know if SPREAD THE FEELING is a return to some kind of form. That’s for other people to decide. To be honest, I write all kinds of songs all the time. (You should hear my klezmer-meets-mariachi number called “Who Put The Mole in My Kugel” It’s from my WEST SIDE STORY knockoff musical my wife has brilliantly titled EL SID.) It might come down to my mood at the time as to which songs make a record. This record definitely has the most “muscle” of all my records. (That’s not saying much if you compare it to say, PINE BOX by the Scud Mountain Boys.) The playing is pretty nuts. Liam Jaeger and James Walbourne are two of the finest guitarists out there. Peyton Pinkerton is a true genius. It should be no surprise to learn that he’s an exceptional painter. All three players wowed me at every turn. Both Patrick Berkery and Ric Menck played drums. They are as good as it gets in my opinion. Neko Case and Pete Yorn were extremely generous with their voices. I’m grateful to both for elevating the songs. Oh, and my brother Bob is on there too, as always. The record was recorded and mixed in Boston, Toronto and Washington State. What’s the single? Probably “The Devil And The Jinn” or “Mint Condition” or “Lullaby.” I have my favorite songs, but they are almost never the ones most people like. For instance, this song didn’t make the cut, but the chorus is pretty badass: Who put the mole in my kugel? Who put the struggle in my strife? Who put the mole in my kugel? Because mole brought the kugel back to life. JP, August, 2019, Toronto
Junius Paul Ism Ism opens audaciously with the spiritual mic-check “You Are Free To Choose,” a track that features bassist Junius Paul alongside Vincent Davis (drums), Justin Dillard (piano), and Corey Wilkes (horns). This is by no accident. In many ways, “You Are Free To Choose” captures the spirit of Junius Paul’s artistic roots. Corey, Justin, and Vincent were among the multigenerational cadre of Chicago musicians present when Junius chose to follow his own path of creative discovery at the storied Velvet Lounge on the South Side of the city in 2002. Though he began learning his craft playing in church, Junius’s creative voice really developed during jam sessions at clubs like The Velvet alongside members of the AACM. It was iron sharpening iron, the most natural form of knowledge transfer. He explained The Velvet’s vibe in 2018: “It’s like in Africa.... If you had this society of diviners or medicine people, or you know, sages… The Velvet stuff is not secret; but there are certain aspects of it… if you weren’t there, you weren’t there.” The Velvet Lounge closed in 2010. But, of course, the spirit of the Velvet Lounge is not dead. “Tune No. 6,” recorded live at the Co-Prosperity Sphere in Chicago, is a sweet interlude here to remind us that jazz is alive, bristling with what’s yet to come. IARC0028 Junius Paul – Ism Format/Release Date: 2xLP, 2xCD, Digi – November 22nd, 2019 RIYL: Makaya McCraven, Angel Bat Dawid, Ben LaMar Gay, Irreversible Entanglements, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Shabaka Hutchings
CD – 603784912165
As Junius pushes forward as a creative musician, he is careful to carry with him the spirit and the knowledge he’s gathered from those who have come before him. He is very literally a bridge between generations of the Chicago vanguard, currently playing in a handful of combos with Makaya McCraven (who produced several of the tracks on Ism) as well as a few of Roscoe Mitchell’s working groups – most notably the Art Ensemble of Chicago – in addition to fronting his own band. One morning on tour with the Art Ensemble in Australia, Roscoe called Junius’s hotel room and asked if he was coming to breakfast. He was. “That will never get old,” he says. To play in the Art Ensemble of Chicago is the culmination of “a dream.” One that started at The Velvet Lounge nearly twenty years ago while watching his heroes. “What they taught me is that you can be yourself, as long as you’re badass at it.”

Phantom Ships With Phantom Sails is the debut 2 CD release by LIVE DEAD ’69. The title, a lyric from Robert Hunter’s “Days Between” bullseyes the recording’s architecture. Featuring original GRATEFUL DEAD member Tom Constanten, the pianist who played all the keyboards on the Live Dead recording, was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995; was the linchpin of the Grateful Dead’s first ambitious/ experimental studio recordings Anthem of The Sun and Aoxomoxoa, and toured with the Dead culminating in their appearance at Woodstock. LIVE DEAD ’69 is not a tribute; it is a continuation of the Dead’s essential zeitgeist of extemporization and interpretive improvisation spotlighting exquisite selections from Grateful Dead’s halcyon repertoires of psychedelic originals, cherished covers and jams. Along with Constanten is Mark Karan, lead guitarist with Bob Weir’s Rat Dog and The Other Ones. Slick Aguilar who played lead guitar in Jefferson Starship & KBC for 26 years and with David Crosby Band before that. He is also a charter member of The Airplane Family. Robin Sylvester, bassist with Bob Weir’s Rat Dog and Pete Lavezzoli from JGB on drums. Soul Jazz Records Presents
STEVE REID: Rhythmatism 22nd November 2019
‘Steve Reid is one of the greatest drummers. He is a musical genius.’ KIERAN HEBDEN (Four Tet) ‘A truly phenomenal artist.’ GILLES PETERSON ‘Steve Reid reflects the spirit of a generation – Art Ensemble of Chicago, John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, the Black Artists Group.’ STRAIGHT NO CHASER
Soul Jazz Records are re-issuing the second album from the legendary Steve Reid in a new edition vinyl (+download code) and CD. Both LP and CD editions are limited edition and there is a 1000-copies only COLOURED vinyl edition. Drummer and composer extraordinaire Steve Reid’s Rhythmatism is one of his deepest and most radical of albums of all time and features some of the heaviest jazz players – Arthur Blythe ‘AKA Black Arthur’, Charles Tyler, David Wertman and others – joining Reid. The album was originally released on Reid’s own Mustevic Sound label in 1976. As a radical jazz artist, Steve Reid played with an extraordinary group of artists – including Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Ornette Coleman, Lester Bowie, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Dionne Warwick, Archie Shepp, Chief Bey, Olatunji, Arthur Blythe, Dextor Gordon, Gary Bartz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Sam Rivers, Leon Thomas, Lonnie Smith and Horace Silver! Reid was born in the South Bronx, and grew up in Queens, New York. He played in the house band at Harlem's Apollo Theatre, accompanying James Brown, as well as playing in Sun Ra's Arkestra. He lived next to John Coltrane, worked in a department store with Ornette Coleman, had a son who played drums with NWA. He began his career as a teenager in the 1960s as a drummer at Motown when he played on Martha and The Vandellas "Heatwave" (aged 14). At the end of the 1960s Reid was sentenced to four years in jail as a conscientious objector of the Vietnam war. On his release from prison in 1974, he formed the Legendary Master Brotherhood and started the independent record label, Mustevic Sound, to release his debut LP Nova in 1976. This album is released in its entirety and with full original cover art here. Rhythmatism is the second in a series of stunning independent records he released in the 1970s. At the start of the 21st century, his career took a new twist when Steve Reid began a successful collaboration with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet). Hebden referred to Reid as his ‘musical soul mate’, resulting in a number of joint albums.

Dopolarians Garden Party Mahakala Music (mahakalamusic.com) - MAHA19-001 // CD&DL available 11/22/19 UPC: 194171640032
Dopolarians’ Garden Party brings together some of the legends of avant-garde jazz with an adventurous younger generation of improvisers from the southern United States to create beautiful, free, playful, listenable avant-garde jazz. Blending masterful free improvisation with hummable compositions that are guaranteed to get stuck in your head, this record has a decidedly blues-infused southern feeling to it.
Alvin Fielder – Percussion Kidd Jordan – Tenor Saxophone William Parker – Bass Kelley Hurt – Voice Christopher Parker – Piano Chad Fowler – Alto Saxophone, Saxello
The group and the session itself represent a collection of reunions. Alvin and Kidd were old, dear friends and collaborators, going back to when they formed the influential Improvisational Arts Quintet decades before the session. William, perhaps the most influential figure in avant-garde jazz today, had played extensively with Kidd and Alvin over the years. Christopher, Kidd, and Alvin had all collaborated many times previously, including Christopher’s performance on Alvin’s previous session as a leader, A Measure of Vision. Chad, Kelley, and Christopher have been playing together for a quarter century. Despite the many connections, this was the first time this group of people had come together.
Track Listing:
Sadly, this session was the last date Alvin Fielder would make. He fell sick in late 2018 and passed away on January 5, 2019. A founding member of the AACM, Alvin was and is an inspiration to multiple generations of jazz musicians.

SHORT DESCRIPTION
Hot tamale. Keen-eyed soul at its best. Savvy and sophisticated. Here is the accounting for taste. On any given night, The Jay Vons are probably the best band in the world. — Swami John Reis (Hot Snakes, Rocket From The Crypt) The gentlemen who enjoy a fine slice, a fine libation, and an even finer haircut are known as The Jay Vons. The Word showcases how this rhythmic tour-de-force blends their love for ‘60s rock and soul with a deftness born from decades of obsessive record collecting and delivered by countless hours of writing and performing. The lead single, “The Word,” is a veritable blueprint for The Jay Vons’ sound: spooky organ, undeniable groove, tasteful guitar, forlorn lyrics, all seasoned generously with handclaps and percussion. Just imagine if The Brothers of Soul (Bridges, Knight, Eaton) produced a session by The Young Rascals and you’re getting warm. “Night (Was Stealing from the Sun)” picks up the tempo with a fervor reminiscent of The Jam at their best — punchy drums and sweet harmonies transform this earnest tale of a misaligned affection into a dance-friendly feast for the soul. “Changing Seasons” finds the band dialing it back a bit, settling into a breezy, mid-tempo groove. The string arrangement and soft, pleading vocal give way to an explosive, anthemic chorus whose hook-heavy horn line enriches the melody, creating a perfect piece of mid-sixties pop. Other highlights include: the gorgeous ballad, “Never Take Me Back”; the full-throttle assault of “Keep On Moving”; and the flute-kissed hit “Did You See Her.” This album is an exercise in how to channel the past without ever being trite. This is no facsimile. This is The Jay Vons. Although their roots stretch from New Jersey, Manhattan, and Long Island, their meeting was no accident. Mikey Post and Michael Catanese have been writing and playing music together since high school. They would later befriend Benny Trokan while living in Brooklyn, where Mikey would join Robbers on High Street. While all three were playing in various groups in New York, the guys wanted to start a new band together. They knew they needed that extra something. A man of speed, a man of action, a man that denies these times: Dave Amels. They would later find him on Lorimer Street, just taking in the views. After exchanging the old what-fors and who-are-yous, the group began writing and rehearsing together. Since then, The Jay Vons have toured all through the United States and internationally, opening for such legends as Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley & The Extraordinaires, Lee Fields & The Expressions; recorded all of their original tracks at Daptone Studios, Dunham Sound Studios, and Diamond Mine Studios with producers Wayne Gordon and Tommy Brenneck; and, while making a name for themselves, have been backing up Greg Cartwright as Reigning Sound. The Jay Vons are very excited to present their debut album The Word on La Castanya. They hope you enjoy listening to it as much as they did making it.

Jerry Leger has a thing for ghosts. The Toronto singer/songwriter confirmed it a couple of years ago when he went on a personal journey to explore many of Ontario’s largely unknown ghost towns, having been inspired by the writings of historian Ron Brown. Leger has immortalized one of those towns, Burchell Lake, on his new album Time Out For Tomorrow, containing 10 portraits of the impermanence of life, love, or simply catching a glimpse of a shooting star. Time Out For Tomorrow continues Jerry Leger’s run of consistently high output and displays the finely honed artistic vision that has been evident since 2005 when, at age 19, he released the first of nine studio albums, along with three more with his side projects The Del-Fi’s and The Bop-Fi’s. It’s added up to a body of work that was recently celebrated with the European-only compilation Too Broke To Die, aimed at Leger’s growing fan base in Britain and the EU.

Here’s what people have been saying about Jerry Leger: “Time Out For Tomorrow is the upcoming album by Jerry Leger and the 3rd in a row that I’ve had the pleasure of producing. In my opinion it’s the most precise example of his craft and vision so far. It’s lean, mean and a beautiful collection of songs and sounds.”

-Michael Timmins, founding member of Cowboy Junkies “With Leger’s new track ‘Canvas of Gold,’ we get the kind of sentimental and rootsy blues-meets-country soul that is reminiscent of the more faster tunes of Magnolia Electric Co. while also bringing to mind a ‘70s country rock sound.”

‘Atlantic Modulations’ (realeased on 12” vinyl) brings together reworkings of Will “Quantic” Holland’s critically acclaimed album "Atlantic Oscillations", featuring remixes from Sampology, Dan Shake, Alfa Mist and Quantic himself. EP opener "You Used To Love Me ft. Denitia (Selva Remix)" epitomises Holland's relocation to Brooklyn, building his new recording studio 'Selva' and taking up a bi-monthly residency at 'Good Room' (NY); with the essence of the N NY club scene radiating through the Selva Remix. A key figure in London's burgeoning jazz scene, talented pianist, producer and composer Alfa Mist reworks "You Used To Love Me" with the addition of melancholic brass and keys, giving the original a contemporary jazz twist. "September Blues" is granted the heavyweight house treatment by Moodymann-stamped-seal-of-approval, Dan Shake. Adding his well-loved mesh of sparky acid synths, Brazilian samba percussion and itchy groove-funk to the song, fuelling "September Blues" into a peak-time contagious weapon. Brisbane-based producer, produce DJ, and Worldwide FM resident, Sampology gives "Orquidea" featuring Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve, a delicate touch of tropical-disco and dub-variants, slowing down the brass horns and distorting the bedrock of the track. ‘Atlantic Oscillations’ marked the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic with his most cohesive and intricate album to date; "Atlantic Modulations" cements that release, contextualising it on the dancefloor. Praise for ‘Atlantic Oscillations’… “Few understand the rhythmic pulse of the globe quite like Quantic’s Will Holland” – PASTE “There's a certain magic to the way Will Holland makes music” – DJ MAG “A bit of a British legend” – JAMZ SUPERNOVA (BBC 1XTRA)

The new album from Health&Beauty – Shame Engine / Blood Pleasure – is their 2nd for Wichita Recordings and the 7th of their career. The recording features a large cast of musicians from the outfit’s past and its present helping the band’s founder and sole constant Brian J Sulpizio achieve his idiosyncratic vision — a sound and ethos he’s been kicking around, retooling, and finessing for more than 15 years. Brian is perhaps best known as the lead electric guitarist in Ryley Walker’s band, but Health&Beauty are a Chicago institution in their own right. The core H&B band is now Suplizio joined by: Jake Acosta (guitar), Bill Satek (bass) and Seth Vanek (drums). Other players on this record include the world-renowned jazz drummer Frank Rosaly, keyboard player Ben Boye (Ryley Walker, Ty Segall etc), Whitney Johnson (aka Matchesse), Cooper Crain (Bitchin Bahas, Cave), Andrew Scott Young (Tiger Hatchery, Ryley Walker) and layers of stunning backing vocals from Los Angeles’ Alina Bea, amongst others. The new album conveys a directness and scorching power that seems to stem from the core band’s live performances, whether the harrowing, droning blues of the opener “Saturday Night” or the soulful Irish-tinged folk-rock of “Recourse.” The most gripping and satisfying instalment in Health&Beauty’s process yet, renowned Chicago music critic, Peter Margasak, has declared Shame Engine / Blood Pleasure as “one of the great rock albums to emerge from Chicago this decade”, and it’s surely one for fans of Jim O’Rourke’s song-based output and The Sea & Cake, as well as appealing to anyone who enjoys “Tonight’s The Night”-era Neil Young. Nick Waterhouse
I Feel An Urge Coming On b/w I'm Due (For A Heartache) 45 Henderson and the staggering, howling saxophone of Mando Dorame. All of the new Waterhouse songs sound big. Brawny and muscular. The lyrics are suspicious, outraged and, at times, very vulnerable (muscle is just flesh, after all). Waterhouse uses an economy of words to deliver complex, coded messages. He offers up equal parts criticism of the time we live in and innate human flaws. He paints relationships under the cover of darkness, slashing through neo-noir fantasies that are romantic, blood-spattered and bracingly aware of the powerlessness felt among people, amid the rapid onslaught of commercialism and technological progress. And, as has become his signature, he throws in a tune written by a close friend. On this record, he covers “I Feel an Urge Coming On” in tribute to the song’s author, Nick’s own mentor and collaborator Joshie Jo Armstead, who wrote music with Ray Charles and sang as both an Ikette and Raelette in the ’60s and ’70s. He’s four albums in, but it makes sense that this specific record is the one that takes his name. You can really here Nick on this one. Not just the band. Not just the songs. Not just the sound. HIM. You can hear his mind at work. His passion. His focus. More importantly, you can feel it. His style is all his own" - NPR "Brisk, self-contained, a little mysterious, and catchy enough to revisit again and again" - Paste Magazine "Waterhouse remains as spirited as he is studious, crooning and belting at all the appropriate moments with a little bit of swagger." - All Music "The second coming of soul, infusing a distinctly California surf-rock spin to the genre" - Vogue
Nick Waterhouse grew up in a coastal town near Long Beach, CA. It was a serene setting: the ocean stretching out for miles to the North and South, manicured lawns, two-story homes, long swathes of concrete highway, fast food chains and mega malls. He was there for two decades. Then, he left.

He found a home in his early 20s in San Francisco, working at record stores alongside a collective of likeminded young crate-diggers and 45 collectors. And then he started making his own records: “Time’s All Gone” in 2012, “Holly” in 2014, and “Never Twice” in 2016. These were evocative albums, steeped in a perfectionism and clarity of vision that informed every choice, from the studios to the players, the arrangements to the album art. Everything, deliberately designed and purposeful, bubbling over with power and feeling. And as those records rolled out into the world, Waterhouse found a dedicated audience of his own as well as a bevy of influential champions and collaborators, including garage-rock mystic Ty Segall, retro-futurist R&B bandleader Leon Bridges and the LA-based quartet Allah-Las, whose first two albums he meticulously produced and played on. There is a “Waterhouse Sound” and it comes from both the man and the method — recording everything on magnetic tape, through analog equipment, and playing live (!), eyeball to eyeball, whenever possible. Now, he’s finished his fourth album. He’s calling it “Nick Waterhouse.” And whether intentional or not, it is perhaps his most reflective — and reflexive — album, employing all of the mature production techniques learned throughout his professional career while retaining a viscous edge that allows it to land with colossal impact — more raw, heavy and overtly confrontational than anything he’s made before. “Nick Waterhouse” was recorded at the finest working studio in Los Angeles, Electro Vox Recorders, and co-produced by Paul Butler (The Bees, Michael Kiwanuka, Devendra Banhart), the master of all things warm, rich and wooly. Nick’s songs here are personal, but personal in the way that “Please Mr. Postman,” “What’s Going On” and “Cathy’s Clown” are — intimate, direct, yet still malleable enough for listeners to suffuse their own life stories into the mix. The album is thick with talented players, including Andres Rentaria, Paula

The second album from Southend singer-songwriter David Woodcock follows his self-titled debut album which had strong support from Steve Lamacq ('New Favourite Band' & 'Rebel Playlist Winner') and Marc Riley both on BBC 6 Music. The album was recorded and produced by David and Joe Lamb, over a two year period of various recording sessions. The results being distilled into a thirteen song selection. Kevin Feazey who worked on the debut album returned again to mix the tracks in London whilst also undertaking some additional recording in Southend. For fans of David’s debut there will be much to love and cherish with this new selection of songs. It sees him expand and develop but the riotous spirit is still very much alive and kicking. What was said about the debut album : "David Woodcock is a talent. Every observation is honed to perfection. Brilliant" Record Collector

The Motorcycle Boy are/were an Edinburgh based band formed from the ashes of teenage upstarts Meat Whiplash and fronted by ex-Shop Assistant Alex Taylor. Their debut single Big Rock Candy Mountain became a top 3 indie hit and flirted with the lower regions of the national charts. The band concentrated on recording an album but infighting, sackings and general mismanagement led to Chrysalis shelving the album. The album continued the faster miles per hour, sequencer heavy, style of Big Rock Candy Mountain in songs such as Hey Mama and Trying To Be Kind but also showed a more articulate song writing ability with Valentine and Under The Bridge. The addition of the mesmerising Take Me For A Walk and the stunning Up Here will only make you wonder why this album has never had the release it deserves.

‘Flush Real Pharynx’ is the title of sound designer/artist/composer and DJ Lee Gamble’s new three-part album for Hyperdub. The triptych loosely explores three stages of the Semioblitz – the aggressive onslaught of visual and sonic stimuli of contemporary cities and virtual spaces. From ‘In A Paraventral Scale’ (the first part of the triptych released at the start of 2019) the coil springs out into the straight-up choked semioblitz of part 2 — ‘Exhaust’. Gone are the serpentine dopplers and seductive supercar engines. ‘Exhaust’s neon-charms coalesce into an MDMA rush of Boston Dynamics dog barks, hypnotic voices and imploding motion sculptures. From the backfiring splinters of ‘CREAM’ through disorientating photo shutter snare patterns of ‘Shard’, ‘Exhaust’s sultry voices take you for a 300mph ride down the psychedelic high street stitching together clashing strands of club soundscapes on its way. ‘Exhaust’ engages in a world well and truly with us right now – explosive, chaotic, unpredictable, contradictory, intoxicating, hyper-colourful, blown-apart and disturbingly engaging in its surreality. It’s Gamble’s ‘Gully Automated Music Concrète’, sounding out from a high rise overlooking the Ballardian motion-sculpture of a collapsing motorway system.

Michael David There In Spirit / Rain II Out November 22, 2019 on Cascine Over the last decade and a half, Michael David has made many kinds of records, but always with other people. In 2015, he made something of his own for the first time ― a bleak, post-apocalyptic single released under the name Studio Paradiso. Now, Michael has completed a pair of singles set for release this fall. On There in Spirit / Rain II, there is a bending of organic instruments. Guitars chop and glimmer. Beats cascade and push forward, but always with a sense of gentle resignation. This is the sound of a mind searching through time, exhuming memories and emotions ― good and bad ―to try and know, recapture, reclaim, and most importantly, feel. The music on both singles was recorded primarily on an Eloquencer sequencer and mixed in part by Joakim. The b-side features two new takes on Rain II — an alternate, slow version and a remixed version by fellow seeker, Jex Opolis

Generations From Now With roots in the Detroit techno scene in which Hood first emerged, Floorplan’s sound is embellished with the heartfelt emotions and unbridled passions of Chicago house music. It is heavy and analogue and filled with vigour thanks to the expert drum programming and ever rising sense of euphoria that comes from the well sculpted synths. But it also speaks to the heart and soul and has done since first standout cut ‘We Magnify His Name.’ The pair’s endless quest for the perfect groove continued through albums like 2013’s Paradise - which spawned anthemic singles like ‘Let’s Ride, ‘Baby Baby’ and the massive ‘Never Grow Old’ - and 2016’s Victorious. Another new album is due on Aus Music in winter 2019 and once again distills the power of techno and feelings of house music with a certain sense of studio magic that emerges when this iconic father-daughter duo come together. It is rare to make music as stripped back yet emotionally enriched as Floorplan, but this pair do it with ease and a firm focus on durable grooves. Functional but full of form, tense but atmospheric, loopy but ever evolving, Floorplan truly transcend the dance music spectrum.
SPACE DIMENSION CONTROLLER ‘LOVE BEYOND THE INTERSECT’ Space Dimension controller returns to R&S Records for the follow up album to ‘Welcome To Mikrosector-50’. Stranded at the edge of space and time; Mr. 8040 has crash landed on a strange planet following a space dust and vecta grog fuelled burnout on the astro bandit colony of PVLN. With distress calls lost to the planet’s surrounding empty space and his life support system damaged beyond repair; Mr. 8040 exits his ship to brave the unknown world in the hope of finding help. Weakened by the planet's heavy atmosphere; Mr. 8040 collapses. He is awoken by the calming presence of a native woman who offers to guide him to someone that may be able to repair his ship. Though frail and disorientated; Mr. 8040 moves forward, growing ever fonder of his new aquaintance. She bestows a small piece of her life-force to him, aiding him on the early stages of their journey. Days later the pair reach The Reflective Forest; A beautiful, yet dangerous region of the planet where time moves slower - the psychoactive environment can cause crippling hallucinations. Tormented by the visions of his past; Mr. 8040 breaks down. Uncertain of his ability to travel any further, he is reassured by his companion. By sundown they find themselves at the end of their journey; but not where Mr. 8040 had expected. It is the crash site of his ship and from within the flames a figure of static and noise walks towards him. Face to face with the mysterious figure, Mr. 8040 realises it is an apparition of his former self. Under the advice of the woman that saved his life, he knows that in order to continue he must let go of all that came before the crash, both good and bad. In a sudden burst of light, Mr. 8040 and the apparition become one. The light fades and his ship appears unscathed, his newfound muse waiting onboard. With his mind and ship repaired, Mr. 8040 climbs on board. The pair leave the planet behind, embarking on new adventures deep into the unknown galaxy… - OFFICIAL FOLLOW UP ALBUM TO ‘WELCOME TO MIKROSECTOR 50’ - HAS SINCE RELEASED AN ALBUM OF OLD MATERIAL ON NINJA TUNES - AND EP’S ON DEKMANTEL AND CLONE RECORDS - DOUBLE LP WITH PRINTED INNER SLEEVES - FOR FANS OF FLOATING POINTS, MOODYMANN, OMAR S, TALABOMAN

Andrea Parkins: Accordion, objects, electronics Matthew Ostrowski: Electronics www.andreaparkins.com www.ostrowski.info www.infrequentseams.com Sleeve artwork and design by Janene Higgins Photograph by Reuben Radding Recorded by Paul Geluso at Harvestworks, NYC LABEL: Infrequent Seams Records RELEASE DATE: 11/22/2019 CAT#: IS-1021 FORMAT: CD, Download After nearly two decades of collaboration, both in live performance and installation projects, Elective Affinities marks the first recording project from Andrea Parkins and Matthew Ostrowski. These eight works represent the current state of their shared sonic explorations, which have been driven by their philosophical as much as their musical interchanges over the years. A shared fascination with physical and musical gestures, densely interwoven meshes of events, and the aesthetics of interruption and breakage lay the groundwork for this album of intricate assemblages, recorded in real time. Incorporating concrete sounds, both live and sampled, cutting-edge synthesis techniques, live processing, and instrumental and acoustic feedback, Elective Affinities is a study of valences, of molecular combinations and recombinations, of forms in states of development, flux, and collapse.

‘Expanse’ is the sophomore album from Tel Aviv’s top jazz and funk trumpeter: Sefi Zisling. Building on his debut LP ‘Beyond The Things I Know’, released on Raw Tapes – Tel Aviv’s leading beat label and collective, and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Stamp The Wax and Twistedsoul, ‘Expanse’ is a self-produced family-minded collaboration project. Inspired by his childhood heroes of John Coltrane, Grant Green and Fred Wesley, ‘Expanse’ combines the sounds of afro-jazz, psychedelic funk and spiritual jazz to create an album that echoes the great creators of Alice Coltrane, Fela Kuti and Donald Byrd, while paving a new path – all catalysed through the trumpet. A perfectionist who places the upmost importance upon the precision and placement of each note, Sefi’s music acts as a dialogue between bright and dark colours, solid grooves and abstract melodies. Sefi’s close and talentRecorded as live session with all of Sefi ed friends – including live members Omri Shani (bass), Tom Bollig (drums) and Noam Havkin (drums) and long-time collaborators Idan Kupferberg (percussion), Uzi Ramirez (guitar) and Tair Slutzki (trombone), ‘Expanse’ captures the essence of the classic jazz session album. With very little digital procession, ‘Expanse’ is committed to the outcome, colourful human mistakes and spontaneous moments included.

Jemma Freeman and The Cosmic Something Oh Really, What's That Then? Three-piece power trio release their debut album. An introspective journey through psychedelic glam-rock nightmares, woozy flows of self-discovery and beguiling lyrics delivered with subtlety and intensity. Jemma is your guide in this strange country, illuminating a path for you. In reality, they’re as lost as the listener. In this hinterland, thoughts tumble on top of each other and the shadows cast by their images overwhelm. Hear a track in isolation and you might expose roots of its origins - from the exuberant T. Rex-esque strings of ‘Black Rain’, to the snarling Hole like guitars of ‘Tasteless’ - but the archaeology of their sound is not so easily uncovered. ‘Oh Really, What’s That Then?’ paints a turbulent history and a doomed future. When an album opens with a distant primal scream, you know it's not going to be an easy ride. As the album’s last-gasp, ‘Tasteless’, slowly dissipates from cacophony to complete stillness - like the universe ending, all energy exhausted - you’ll feel the same. The journey is intense. Not that it’s all a trudging grind, there are moments of pure exhilarating pop joy along the way.

The Leaf Library The World Is A Bell Double pink vinyl in reverse board sleeve. An ambitious and expansive update of their warm, hypnotic drone-pop encompassing gently pulsing electronics, chiming guitars, minimalist piano, acoustic and synthesised drones, noise, improv all in the service of the band’s most assured and experimental songwriting yet. Features guest contributions from (amongst others) celebrated singer Ed Dowie, noise group Far Rainbow, fellow space-pop travellers Firestations and the string quartet Iskra Strings. It draws on all aspects of the band’s work so far, from indie guitar pop to ambient atmospherics, via surging rhythms and layered, melancholic vocals. This is the band’s second album and is the official follow up to 2015’s debut Daylight Versions (5* The Guardian). It begins with ‘In Doors And Out Through Windows’, a minimal piano and vibraphone incantation in 7/4 with unsettling repetition and melancholy brass swells. ‘Hissing Waves’ is the most pop the band have ever sounded, with its skipping Insides-esque electronics and looping verses. ‘Patience’ (vocals by Ed Dowie) is the closest the band come to the sound of ‘Daylight Versions’, cresting on waves of guitars and an insistent synth arpeggio. Elsewhere we find the title track’s pointillist strings (arranged by the band’s saxophonist Daniel Fordham), hypnotic vocal rituals on noise/improv detour ‘Bodies Carried Off By Bees’ (featuring Far Rainbow) and the Yo La Tengo-meet-Section 25 repetitions of ‘An Endless’, its bright guitar arpeggios and billowing synths unfurling across ten minutes of glorious repetition. The album reaches its end with the fittingly grandiose ‘Paper Boats On Black Ink Lake’. The radio unfriendly (at nearly 20 minutes long) track drifts in on sleepwalk-slow guitars, recalling Earth at their most serene, while Kate Gibson and Melinda Bronstein’s vocals float over a bed of strings that could be Robert Kirby scoring Low’s Secret Name. The World Is A Bell is an album of dense and unhurried songs, rich in sonic detail and ambitious in scope, its music simultaneously intimate and epic. Guitarist and lyricist Matt says, “We wanted to create something that was completely its own thing, that was in no hurry to get anywhere and that contained large expanses for listeners to get lost in. 01 In Doors And Out Through Windows 02 Hissing Waves 03 Patience 04 Larches Eat Moths 05 The World Is A Bell 06 Bright Seas 07 Bodies Carried Off By Bees 08 An Endless 09 More Than Half Asleep 10 Paper Boats On Black Ink Lake

CD + LP RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 29, 2019 Close your eyes and imagine the Everly Brothers wearing tie-dyed Nudie Suits. Okay, now open them. There’s Mapache. Youngn’s Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci, the Mapache boys, are barely in their 20s and are already rising to the top of the new wave of West Coast Cosmic Americana. Born and raised in Glendale, California, their breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt yet heady sound, was honed by surfing the beaches and exploring the deserts and canyons of their native California. Dan Horne of Beachwood Sparks produced the album at the vintage analog halls of Valentine Recording Studios, where the tape rolled and captured the live spirited harmony, skillful strumming and genuinely well-crafted songs that everyone from Chris Robinson to Jonathan Richman have fallen in love with. The real charm lies in the simplicity of their voices and the songs that recall a young Gene Clark, The Louvin Brothers, Crosby, Stills and Townes...it’s all there and more. Mapache was originally released in 2017 on a limited run that sold out instantly and is now available again on CD and LP. As an added bonus, Mapache’s 2018 Lonesome LA Cowboy 3-song EP is included with the LP as a bonus 45 single and also included on the CD as three additional bonus tracks. This marks the first time the songs from Lonesome LA Cowboy are available on CD or LP.

HITTING THE BINS TWO DAYS AFTER JIMI’S BIRTHDAY!
The second single by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, "Purple Haze" coupled with "51st Anniversary," as it was issued in the UK and Europe, showcases the artistry and mystique of Jimi Hendrix. It beckons us into his psychedelic world just as it did in spring 1967, when it hit the Top Five in the UK between the likes of "Somethin' Stupid" and "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" on the charts. The two sides presented Hendrix's space-age take on blues and pop, establishing a momentum of influence that shows no sign of ever ending. This edition–in a unique, ongoing series that partners Sundazed with Experience Hendrix–features the original monaural mixes, a color sleeve with rare photographs of Hendrix in the ascent of his career, and is pressed on purple vinyl!

A MOODY NYC MASTERPIECE FROM THE VILLAGE CIRCA ’66! New York folk artist Fred Neil’s eponymous second album may not have been a sales smash, but it inspired countless contemporaries, from Jefferson Airplane to Crosby, Stills and Nash, to Harry Nilsson. It was the latter’s cover of “Everybody’s Talkin’,” featured in the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack, that garnered Neil his greatest notoriety, but the album is full of shimmering, surreal gems, like “The Dolphins” and the stunning “Faretheewell.” Neil disappeared into reclusiveness not long after, but his legacy as a thoughtful, complex songwriter lives on. Pressed on clear vinyl at RTI! With a deeply resonant voice that exudes a hundred different things at once – pain, joy , weariness, and decades of experience – Fred Neil created an influential body of work that far outweighs its modest size. Few artists from the vibrant early ‘60s Greenwich Village folk scene had more staying power than this legendary recluse, a figure who inspired the likes of Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, and countless others.

Jesse Kanda is a visual artist and musician widely known for his modern gothic surrealist art, especially his work with Björk, Arca, and FKA twigs, and in recent years for his own musical output as Doon Kanda. At Hyperdub, we are very excited by his transition into music; if there were a sound to his beautiful, otherworldly art, this is it in its pure form. ‘Labyrinth’ is his debut album, comprised of 13 pieces of new music, and 10 artworks. It is a dreamlike, exhilarating listen from start to finish, covering emotional ground from hell to heaven. It was created between summer 2018 and spring 2019 in London and Ontario. His two previous EPs 'Heart' (2017) and 'Luna' (2018) focused on melody across a spectrum of emotion, and like his visual work often metamorphosed pain into beauty. 'Labyrinth' chronicles a period of loss, in ecstatic fantasy. Stylistically, much of the album is in 3/4 time signature in rhythms reminiscent of waltz, allowing Kanda to create movement through melody. This idiosyncratic gothic style was hinted at in his first EP, and is in full bloom here. It is also a proposition of a new form of club music; one can imagine venues transformed into an alien world, where the music moves the crowd in previously unknown ways. The album has a narrative arc of building chaos, peaking with ‘’Mino’, then a resolve of clarity at ‘Bunny’. Jesse hopes listeners experience ‘Labyrinth’ in its presented order, while maybe flipping through the artwork in the accompanying full size 10 page picture book.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN
Doug & Max HausuMountain @gmail.com 847-220-1755
Kent, OH-based freak jazz / carnival-core noise legends Doug Gent and Pat Modugno’s recordings as Moth Cock have been defining entries in the Hausu Mountain catalog since the label’s earliest days.
Artist: Moth Cock Album: If Beggars Were Horses Wishes Would Ride
Label: Hausu Mountain Cat#: HAUSMO97 Format: Cassette 6 34457 00131 2 Release Date: 11/29/19. (click album art to stream) “... this wonderfully squirmy improv-centric duo from Kent, Ohio, continue to collide acoustic and electronic—and silly and serious—in beguiling, bizarre ways. Moth Cock’s music eludes easy classification. It emits a giddy weirdness a la vintage Ralph Records, but it’s treated with a twisted post-techno ebullience and the anything-goes mayhem of the deep underground.” - Chicago Reader (Peter Margasak) “These mini-songs are blown into veritable noise symphonies on Moth Cock’s most recent album, 0-100 At the Speed of the Present. Witness the beautifully alliterative “Persevering Power of Pulp Paperbacks,” which opens slowly amid uneasy squiggles of extruded brass and gradually transforms into an ominously buzzing, weirdly beautiful soundscape over the course of nearly 10 minutes.” - Columbus Alive “Didn’t see this coming, but my new favorite group is Moth Cock, whose split LP with Form A Log makes The Residents sound like R.E.M.” - Dave Segal (The Stranger)
“This is simply bizarre, alien circus music that doesn’t sound like something that was thought up by humans. Sure, there’s traces of clarinet and trumpet, but they get twisted and perverted into something really grotesque and silly and strange, and it keeps folding in on itself and getting stranger and more confounding.” - Paul Simpson (AllMusic)
The duo’s tape Bremmy (HAUSMO6, 2012) began a relationship that has since racked up four full-length albums, a split LP with Form A Log, and three releases by Modugno’s warped beat solo project Khaki Blazer. If Beggars Were Horses Wishes Would Ride, the most recent missive issued from the Cock boys’ camp, clearly attests to what makes them such an indelible force in the American DIY underground, while pushing their already beyond-twisted sound into new heights of surreal, comic mania. Built over Gent’s freewheeling saxophone improvisations which Modugno processes through effects and live-layers over his own fragmented loop structures, a typical Moth Cock session accumulates layer after layer of brass, stuttered percussion patterns, and goofy sound effects. The resulting sessions are deeply disorienting and time-dilating, while maintaining a sense of unpredictability and unhinged comedic glee — all qualities that come as close as possible to exemplifying the core tenets of Hausu Mountain’s “sound.” While the trajectory of Moth Cock’s recordings have typically taken them deeper into overblown noise and densely layered screwball hellzones with each subsequent release, If Beggars Were Horses might surprise longtime listeners by sounding relatively pared down and deliberate by their standards. Modugno’s staccato beat structures have a little more room to breathe in each mix as they bounce over brittle snare and hihat patterns and repeating blasts of smeared, static texture. In the context of these more open foundations, Gent’s sax performances shine with added emphasis and clarity as he pours out sheets of sound at a rapid clip, or leans back in his signature lawn chair to bleat out some foul extended-tone squeals. While Modugno’s gonzo beats bear the influence of Black Dice, Matmos, and the Ralph Records catalog, Gent’s playing hits like an alternate dimension Ornette Coleman or an atonal snake charmer hypnotizing a mess of freaks at the basement gig. Moth Cock draw constant inspiration from the fertile central Ohio experimental circuit that includes mainstays like Aaron Dilloway’s Hanson Records, the seminal trio Emeralds and its present day branches, and HausMo family members like Tiger Village and Machine Listener. At its heart, the Moth Cock project is about the symbiosis of two best friends who meld into one quivering, bizarro entity whose boundaries can’t be readily identified. The Cock boys draw ever closer to each other as they hash out their bizarre vision of improvised performance and experimental composition, and we can’t help but follow them just to see where they might end up next.
