Comfort can be a crutch or a conduit for a creative breakthrough. For Baths, it’s led to a level of artistic confidence and stability that’s allowed him to produce his finest work. Enter Romaplasm, a profoundly emotional record steeped in the at-home obsessions of LA’s Will Wiesenfeld. “I’m not as emotive with real world things as I am when I’m neck deep in anime, video games, books or comics…” Baths says. “I wanted to be honest with myself that this is where my heart lies and where I get the most emotion out of life. I wanted a record that mirrors those emotions but in an indirect way.” In his own singular style, Baths has created his own post-modern take on Romanticism. Romaplasm bears a similar emphasis on emotion and individualism. You can see the hallmarks of the movement’s stress on awe—and like many of the great Romantic artists, he confronts the gnawing chaos of life with a focus on beauty and the sublime. As the German painter, Caspar David Friedrich once affirmed: the artist’s feeling is his law. “That’s where my head is at right now,” Baths says. “Anime and fantasy overdoes that too. It’s about taking ideas as far as you can even if they don’t work out. I’m trying to capture feelings that might be more obscure when translated to music, but always seem to resonate with me.” For as long as Will Wiesenfeld has been Baths, he’s been trafficking in perfect—or, more often and more interestingly—near-perfect pieces of pop. After attending Hamilton High School’s vaunted music academy, the classically trained singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, first emerged in 2009, after a stint as [Post-Foetus] and the birth of another, still-active project known as Geotic. His music, which merged the glitchy, punishing gloom of L.A.’s beat scene with sunnier melodies and vocals that often drifted into falsetto, was an instant sensation. It was as experimental as it was comforting, a warm blanket made from the rarest linens. Publications like Pitchfork heaped praise on his debut album, 2010’s Cerulean, which codified the sound; Obsidian, which followed three years later, in part chronicled Wiesenfeld’s recovery from a ghastly illness, and was even more well-received. Romaplasm exists in the emotional crevices that are left unexplored in polite company or at stilted cocktail parties. Less outwardly grim than the darker half of Obsidian—but twice as bittersweet—this LP reimagines approachable pop songs as pieces of scaffolding that can be lived in, expanded and retracted, or torn down entirely. The opener “Yeoman” could slide into Top 40 radio rotation, except for how tactilely you feel each component part, like Baths is constructing the record right in front of you, in real time; “Superstructure” marries an earnest and straightforward vocal to a track that’s glitchy and propulsive and could soundtrack the climax of a gritty art film. As with any artist who toys with name and identity, Wiesenfeld’s nods to a life that is truly personal (rather than persona) are given extra weight, extra attention. When he sings, on “Human Bog,” “Queer in a way that’s failed me / I’m not enough of anything,” it’s dripping with the sort of despair that’s won only through years of lived experience. Makaya McCraven Highly Rare Highly Rare is a new mixtape produced & arranged by Makaya McCraven. It’s titled Highly Rare not only for the format of its initial September 2017 release (a limitededition run of cassettes packaged in screen-printed, string-sealed, firecracker red envelopes), but foremost for the context of the source material’s capture. The sounds were recorded to four track cassette tape at a DIY show packed into the confines of Chicago dive Danny's Tavern, a place definitely not known for having live bands, let alone live recordings. It's a place known to vinyl heads both locally and globally as a legendary hub in the crate digger diaspora. It's the place where Jeff Parker learned how to DJ. It's the place where Dante Carfagna held down a rare soul party for over a decade, where he first dropped public needles on 45s that would eventually make compilations he curated for Numero Group and Chocolate Industries. It's the place where DJ Shadow still does sets on the low when he rolls through town. And on one highly rare night in November 2016 Danny's was the place where we invited an "International Anthem All Stars" type of improvising ensemble (Makaya McCraven, Junius Paul, Nick Mazzarella and Ben Lamar Gay) to play in support of DJ sets by LeFtO, who was in transit from Belgium, hitting local spots under the direction of Chicago scene sage King Hippo. Damnnear 0 degrees and just days after the death sentence of the American presidential election, the sounds the musicians conjured were thick with the bitter cold darkness that hung heavy in the air, punctuated with moments of joyful determination – the kind that can only be accessed when such impending doom triggers passionate adrenalized bursts by creators in survival mode. Cogent as the cultural context of that November night at Danny's is the compositional prowess that Makaya exercised in post to make Highly Rare the impressive final piece it is. Demonstrating a deeply attuned development of the production approach he forayed in the creation of his 2015 breakout In The Moment, Makaya again took stereo mixes of the full band improvisations into his lab to edit, loop, layer and arrange the tracks, tediously constructing a vivid new slate of sounds that tell an infinitely more colorful tale than the straight takes ever could. The rough and raw edges of low fidelity cassette recording combine with the elegance and wit of Makaya McCraven's production touch to make Highly Rare a highly relevant artifact in the ever-unfolding history of Chicago style creative music. This release builds on the critically acclaimed Red Bull Music Academy radio documentary series of the same name that chronicles the history and global influence of this exciting early strain of electronic music. Researched and curated by Diggin In The Carts writer / co-director Nick Dwyer and Hyperdub label head Kode9, the collection plunges deep into the rare archives of the chip era of Japanese video game music. Available on CD and digital, with a vinyl run to follow early in 2018, the collection features artwork by renowned Japanese anime artist Koji Morimoto, whose distinctive style has featured in films like Memories and The Animatrix. The music in this collection was made for globally renowned systems, from Famicom, Super Famicom and the PC-Engine through to popular Japanese home computer platforms like the MSX, MSXturboR and the PC-8801. Diggin In The Carts showcases these works not just as ‘music for video games,’ but as incredible pieces of electronically produced Japanese music that stand on their own. Some of the greatest art is created within limitations, and often the most pioneering and influential periods in electronic music have resulted from artists pushing existing technology to its limits. The 8-bit and 16-bit era of video game music in the 1980s and early 1990s saw composers squeezing the most technicolour array of sounds, tones and melodies from the limited chips and channels they had at their disposal. With every new system came a new sound chip, and every chip brought its own personality, with Japanese games companies adopting all kinds of methods to give their games the sonic edge, from customizing chips to boost the console's capabilities to composers developing bespoke computer programs to generate their own unique sound palette. From Soshi Hosoi’s Steve Reich inspired minimalist masterpiece ‘Mister Diviner’ from The Mahjong Touhaiden, to the dazzling high-tech chip soul of Toshiharu Yamanishi’s ‘Shooting Stars’ from legendary Mega Drive shooter Thunder Force IV, and not forgetting the saw tooth heavy darkness of the Konami Kukeiha Club on titles like ‘Mouryou Senki Madara’ and ‘Esper Dream II’, Diggin In The Carts aims to bring the pleasure and depth of this music to an audience inside and outside the gaming world. The word “symphonic” is perhaps too staid a word to describe the album’s almost meditatively meticulous charm, although it makes sense in the context of Brian Wilson’s oft-quoted remark about aiming to create a “teenage symphony to God.” Gion’s no teenager, however (look no further than the album’s “The Nihilist” for the warning), and his music suffers not a moment for its distinct lack of adolescence. Rather, Gion manages to stretch out the sweetness in Wilson’s statement like some sort of sonic saltwater taffy – and there’s plenty to share. There’s the slow-burn splendor of the album’s opener, “Zig Zag,” as pleasing a smile-generator as anything every tightly rolled in its namesake. There’s album-highlight “Partner,” as certain an alternate-universe psychedelic-salsa hit-single as your ears have ever heard, with the instrumentation creating a crisp and clean holiday hammock for Gion to lay down an almost whispered baritone (Gion’s voice shows a perhaps unexpected flexibility throughout the songs, bordering on chameleon-esque). There’s the transistor-radio friendly album-closer, “Mercury In Retrograde,” aligned like “Psychotic Reaction” on codeine syrup, the fuzz not necessarily frantic, but beautiful. Unraveling the history and mystery of rock and roll is half the fun, and Joel Gion has been responsible for far more than his fair share of fun. Each artist seems driven to take risks and push boundaries of what is considered heavy. A clear example being that on recent tours The Body have performed without any live guitar or drums. Both artists enjoy the creative growth and music and good times that come out of collaborations. Each has collaborated often with other unique but likeminded musicians such as Thou, The Haxan Cloak, Krieg, Merzbow, The Bug and the list goes on. Despite their obvious differences in songwriting, The Body and Full of Hell are unified by their shared aesthetic, catharsis through the manipulation of emotions transformed by visceral noise and fueled by an inescapable sense of dread. They have returned to collaborate again not because of their commonalities but because of their differences and what those differences yield in performance. With Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light, The Body & Full of Hell have integrated a love for electronic noisescapes with abrasive, precise sonic assaults into a sound unlike anything either has produced before. Written and recorded in one week at Machines with Magnets in Providence, the music of Ascending draws from unexpected sources such as reggaetón and jungle (“Master’s Story”). There are some familiar guests to The Body fans, namely vocalist Chrissy Wolpert (Assembly of Light Choir) and Ben Eberle (Sandworm), as well as first time collaborator drummer Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt, Black Pus), whom both bands share a strong aesthetic of individualism. Samples, synth, saxophone, and a drum orchestra (led by Chippendale) all throb, and sputter, coagulating under the weight of the two bands. Programmed drum patterns and loops taking cues from hip hop are bent and twisted throughout, flawlessly emboldening the distortion drenched guitars and howling vocals. Each element, though meticulously crafted, is visceral, as the exhilaration of improvisation has not been curtailed by editing. Ascending a Mountain of Heavy Light casts aside the dogmas of heavy music. Extremity in The Body & Full of Hell’s music is not based on macho musings or competitive trendiness, but rather is an integral tool to exploring the anxieties of modern life and the bridges between personal and political strife. The Moonlight Butterfly has the core elements of the utterly unique Sea and Cake sound, while introducing a more experimental approach to the song’s textures and structures. The songs are more extended in form and cinematic in feel. The band’s singular guitar-based pop sound is filtered though pattern based ideas that slowly morph the linear into the modal. The album is filled with extended instrumental passages that bear the markers of Prekop’s recent solo explorations of analog synthesizers. The song “Inn Keeping”, for example, focuses on the synthesizer as the main armature of the song, a constant to play with and against.

STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 17, 2017 Fresh off their critically acclaimed debut Guppy and between nationwide touring stints with Wolf Parade, Barsuk Records is pleased to reissue Charly Bliss’ Soft Serve, the three-song EP the band originally self-released in 2015 along with an accompanying video and comic book trilogy. Soft Serve will be available at retailers for the first time and will be limited to 1,000 copies worldwide, hand-numbered and on marbled vinyl with colored speckles and a download code. Eva Hendricks, the band’s charismatic singer/guitarist, and guitarist/vocalist Spencer Fox met at NYC’s Webster Hall when they were 15, and soon began writing songs together over AOL Instant Messenger. They were later joined by drummer Sam Hendricks (Eva’s older brother) and bassist Dan Shure, and went on to release Soft Serve. With critics beginning to take note, the band turned heads everywhere by opening for Veruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, Tokyo Police Club, Glass Animals, Darwin Deez and more before signing to Barsuk Records and releasing their critically acclaimed debut album Guppy in April of 2017.

Impossible Objects of Desire
Over the last decade or so Brighton’s Fujiya & Miyagi have been steadily building a vast body of work that explores 1970’s Germany-tinged beats, whip smart electronica, intoxicating disco, shimmering pop and generally concocting an idiosyncratic blend of dance music that sounds utterly and uniquely their own. The group have decided to revisit their 2006 classic, Transparent Things, and for the first time release the full album on vinyl. Transparent Things managed to look deeper and further beyond the zeitgeist whilst simultaneously remaining in it. They explored krautrock music with a passion, grace and respect - creating a hybrid sound of music that felt deeply indebted to innovations of the past but was filtered through a deeply contemporary mind-set. The end result of the album was a sound for the dance floors of the past, the then and the future. With a plush new re-master, the album sounds even more crisp and punchy than it did before and still sounds every bit as contemporary, managing to show none of its age.

The Houston multi-instrumentalist Matt Kidd, who writes pastoral, deeply felt compositions as Slow Meadow, will release the 43-minute LP Costero on November 17. The 10-song effort is Kidd’s second as Slow Meadow, arriving two years after the 33-year-old’s debut — celebrated by the New York Observer and Echoes' John Diliberto, among myriad others — on the Hammock Music label.

Tracked at Sonic Ranch (Beach House, Explosions in the Sky) on the border of Mexico and Texas, as well as a friend's home in northern Alabama, Costero is a spare and wistful collection of sketches for piano and string quartet, yet it's also immutably lush: One can hear in Kidd's soft focus motifs connections to contemporary minimalists such as Goldmund and Nils Frahm just as easily as the Romantic-era lions Satie and Chopin. Costero — Spanish for "coastal," a nod to the collection's preoccupation with figurative boundaries — will be released on vinyl and digitally, with one additional track. The French illustrator Jan Garet contributed original pieces for each of Costero's ten songs, and the record was mastered by James Plotkin.

MARTYN HEYNE ELECTRIC INTERVALS After 2016’s mini-album Shady and Light, composer and guitarist Martyn Heyne releases his first full-length record Electric Intervals on the new 7K! imprint. Says Heyne: “The number of parameters that determine a recording appears to be infinite. The mood, instrument, tuning, mics, room, temperature, time of day; all contribute to sound. The magic, once captured, is impossible to recreate. This might seem a hindrance, but it’s really the whole point of recording for me.” Opener ‘Carry’, for example, is a composition carefully developed over months with most of the production happening in front of the microphone. ‘Wilde Wide’, however, was recorded only once as an early-morning improvisation. Having worked with Dustin O’Halloran on the Emmy-winning Transparent soundtrack and with clarinettist Claudio Puntin as part of the duo Set Aglow, Heyne’s sound is one of simplified
diversity. On his debut album he controls each melody with the precision of a veteran producer. The intricate chords of Carry, the use of silence in Patina, the driving quietude of Fårö; they all invite to creep in close to hear his message. While most of the album’s tracks seamlessly melt into each other, the beats of Come On actively stand out, forcing the listener to sit up and pay attention, “like an espresso in the afternoon.” Born in Hamburg, Heyne taught himself the guitar and piano at an early age, learning by the geography of keys and strings rather than via traditional methods. His unorthodox tendencies filtered into an adolescence of more classical training at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and residencies across the UK. In 2009, Heyne set up his unique Lichte Studio in Berlin, where he has worked with the likes of The National, Nils Frahm, Lubomyr Melnyk, Peter Broderick and Efterklang, with whom he also extensively toured.

The debut Dub Syndicate set from 1982, pre-dating the involvement of mainstay Style Scott. This features various members of Creation Rebel and African Head Charge turning out a wild dub set, with hard-hitting rhythms and FX-mutated melodies phasing in and out of the mix. Recorded quickly with track titles cheekily poking fun at the contemporary series by The Scientist which pitted him against various bmovie foes. The tunes themselves however are deadly serious, with version excursions on some classic On-U vocal cuts such as “Bedward The Flying Preacher” and “Across The Red Sea”, and a continuing commitment by producer Adrian Sherwood to take his love of reggae and filter it through his exploratory and uniquely English approach. Increasing access to new studio technology resulted in this splicing of dub reggae DNA with cut-and-paste sampledelia. Anticipating the later work of labels such as Def Jux, Wordsound and Anticon, this 1985 album paired crack Jamaican session musicians such as the Roots Radics’ drummer Style Scott (by this point the instrumental leader of Dub Syndicate) and The Congos’ Ashanti Roy with Public Image Limited’s Jah Wobble and Keith Levene, not to mention the restless mixing desk boundary-pushing of producer and de facto member Adrian Sherwood. A more reggaefied take on the industrial funk Sherwood was making with Tackhead during the same period, lovers of digidub, outernational sounds and even the wilder reaches of 80s hip-hop will find much to get lost in here. Bajas Fresh is on the beach here in 2017, existing and thriving is such that new properties tend to melt into the surrounding in the same wrecked world as you and me. How they finding texture, providing vivid sonics without uprooting the mindset. And they do. it so chill and pretty? It’s been over three years since the last proper Bitchin Bajas album — a natural paradise of woodwinds, droning organs, analog synths, field recordings, and an ever-expanding sense of MORE (and LESS). In between then and now came a series of collaborative LPs, with Natural Information Society (Automaginary), filmmaker Olivia Wyatt (Sailing a Sinking Sea) and Bonny Prince Billy (Epic Jammers and Fortunate Little Ditties). Each time these varied external stimuli came into contact with the Bitchin Bajas’ acroamatic process, it left the group with expanded perimeters to traverse. So 2017 — what’s new? Everything and nothing, probably! The pursuit is still the same: a perfect continuous flow. The means to attain it are in full, fluid transition; woven into the strands that unspool so peacefully (and with such potent enervation) are new elements — like chord changes, for instance! The use of percussives is evident for the first time as well. Plus a horn section, a cover song . . . but before you start thinking that this Bajas Fresh is some kind of whole-cloth change, recall to your mind that the nature of equilibrium around Bitchin Bajas
While flowing towards a wholeness, the four sides of Bajas Fresh feature distinct approaches, approaching the ephemeral with subtle tweaks from new angles. Eschewing the grainy expansiveness of the self-titled album, this new one has an almost monolithic approach, whether spitting forth with Harmonia-styled data riffs, finding Denny-esque South Pacific exotica within a classic Sun Ra piece or teasing out almost imperceptible inflections inside the epochal fizz and whir with glassy-eyed, glacial patience. On Bajas Fresh, the cellular system of Bitchin Bajas continues to synthesize amid a growing ecosystem also of the Bajas’ making, both morphing naturally together into a state perhaps not that far removed from its former incarnation, while also essaying refreshing new tones for new zones. Succulent halfspeed mastering done at Abbey Road gives the LP pressing greater depth, extension and resonance than all previous Bajas incarnations, but the double cassette version of course holds its own unique experience. When their mother died three years ago, Cummins was left reevaluating the degree to which they had been holding back various identities and emotions in order to protect her. Fits was born as a way of claiming that space. The phrase “I want” is hyper-prevalent throughout the album — while writing songs for the album Cummins would often start by yelling “I want—” and going from there. Much of the record is about grief, and “returning to a busted up fucked up childhood after falling out of it and stabilizing yourself on your own,” says Cummins. “The Ground” and “Drop Thistle” were written after visiting the site of their old childhood home in New Freedom, Pennsylvania (profiled as “Trump County” in PA Magazine). Still other songs are drawn from lighter fare: ghosting, a relationship that was already “dead” and is now “Superdead.” Even the darker content is often folded into effusive material, buoyed by yelps, shreds, and cathartic breakdowns.

After years of playing bass in multiple bands across the Brooklyn music scene, Nicholas Cummins is releasing All Belief is Paradise, the debut full-length for their first songwriting effort, Fits. Songs that began as vocal and bass loops recorded to voice memo as a way for Cummins to express their own desires and songwriting designs, have evolved into effusive power-pop songs with the help of close pals drummer Brian Orante, and later Joe Galarraga (Big Ups) on guitar and Emma Witmer (gobbinjr) on bass. All Belief is Paradise, named after a line in a Lisa Robertson’s The Weather, honors the spirit of the early material (sometimes directly pulling in bits of early voice memo demos) while unveiling Fits’ evolution into a fully formed band capable of being thoughtful and bratty, accessible and weird, and tackling it all with confidence, humor, and great hooks.

Fits is undeniably shaped by band members’ experiences playing Brooklyn DIY spaces such as Shea Stadium and Silent Barn. (For one, Cummins first decided to take the Fits project seriously after playing the demos through a giant traveling Swedish log parked in the Silent Barn yard.) For another, songs are quick, loud, and rarely content with sticking to any one style, often holding for meditative intervals before launching into full-throttle caffeinated pop. I had been busted by the Feds for growing marijuana on my farm. Johnny Cash called me and asked me if I wanted to come live at his place on the lake till the heat blew over, which I did . . . in that time, we talked and he agreed to let me write for his publishing company and gave me the green light to do an album in his studio. I was exhausted from burning so hard from the previous ten years, In ’69, I stood on stage with Tim Hardin at Woodstock, singing Bobby Darin’s “Simple Song of Freedom.” It was the end of an era, burnout time for endless troubadours who had ridden the waves of the sixties. I had been experimenting with multiple guitar tunings and had given myself up lyrically to what a free form jazz sax player experiences when they play their spontaneous solos. I was burned out on the traditional pop lyric art form — thus, the songs on this record, At the House of Cash. When I finished it, John and June listened to it one night. A few days later he sidled up to me and said in his iconic Johnny Cash voice, “Chris, June and I listened to your record last night and I don’t think even the drug people are gonna understand it.” WOW. To me that was a compliment. I had transcended the culture that had been driving the world for the last 12 years. I had succeeded.”

t the end of ’73, Chris Gantry had in the can one of the weirdest records ever cut, on or off Music Row. A songwriter, storyteller and original Nashville outlaw, Chris started the wild new wave of young talent in town, a few years before Kristofferson, Mickey Newbury, Tony Joe White, Dan Penn and dozens more. He’d already been writing for years when, at the age of 25, his song, “Dreams of the Everyday Housewife,” was a Billboard Pop Top 40 hit and a #3 Country record for Glen Campbell. He’d made his own records too — but so far, Chris Gantry hadn’t done anything like this — and that was kinda saying a LOT. His music was a stylistic fusion: his 1967 album debut Introspection sounded a little bit folk, a little bit pop and only a little bit country, with smooth melodies and verdant string charts. But the 60s were afoot, and by the time of Chris’ second LP in 1970, Motor Mouth, his approach
had radicalized into a wide-eyed, hard-edged delivery. The critics dug it, and Chris played on Johnny Cash’s TV show, but the next Gantry record didn’t appear for five more years. And herein lies a tale: of dropping out, of a vision-quest and an exorcism of sorts, and of sessions for a bunch of songs so far out from Nashville norms that it’s only now they’ve seen release. This is the story of At the House of Cash. High on the waves of the times, Chris had pulled apart the tropes of traditional voice-and-guitar singer-songwriting, pushing them into fevered, eclectic, entirely personal territory. He took in the scope of the freedom generation with whom he’d been riding shotgun, and turned it back out again with unhindered lyrical expressions reflecting both disillusionment and a deep sense of transformation, with deft gestures and songwriting chops nailing down the tunes. Settled at Cash’s studio with a band of heavy Nashville cats, Gantry extemporized his songs with sleek self-confidence, even while plunging through the hippie mirror of confusion. The opener, “Away Away,” gives entrée to the rambling journey, with mentions of flying saucers and spacey synth notes subbing for steel — then, “Different” pits his rasping pipes against mellow orchestration, evoking debauched Nilssonesque vibes. Finally, the raving spoken-word-scape “Tear” is rife with flutes and woodwinds, touches of sitar, tabla and violin, courtesy of the group Oregon. And that’s just the first three songs! A mood of ecstatic intoxication prevails throughout the album, whether in stark rock n roll performances or celestial ballads, with Chris’s croon at times rivaling Tim Buckley’s wandering vocals. Religious ripostes and lysergic lyric miniatures abound. Had At the House of Cash seen release in its day, it would have been a shot of earthy surrealism straight into the heart of Music Row. But the album didn’t find a backer, so Chris Gantry shrugged and moved on. He’s kept on with singing and writing, doing books and plays too, appearing in the film Trash Humpers, and making three new records over the last few years — but At the House of Cash stands tall with its outlaw brethren from the golden age of Nashville, and it is damn fine having it out in the open air with the rest of us at long last.

Butcher Brown is something increasingly rare - a real band, playing for their audience and for each other. The electrifying energy reminds us how vital a live album should be. Multi-instrumentalist DJ Harrison (who’s recently released a debut solo album on the mighty Stones Throw label) is broadly seen as the visionary, albeit this is an egalitarian band. Here his keys provide the harmonic colours around which drummer Corey Fonville’s (Christian Scott, Nicholas Payton) muscular delivery and bassist Andrew Randazzo’s effortless cool pulsate. Marcus Tenney on Trumpet and Morgan Burr’s guitar complete the quintet. The players were all born after the mid-70s, fusion’s golden age, but their modern, hiphop inflected funk has rich echoes of Weather Report, Return To Forever and early Earth Wind and Fire. Recruiting her as a drummer for his idea of a minimalist, experimental punk duo, Kicking Giant would commence activities as soon as they could find a drum for Rachel. Confirmed practitioners in the D.I.Y. aesthetic, they started issuing cassette albums that they would dub at home and distribute through an underground network of zines, independent labels and pen pals. In 1990 they began an alliance with like minded compatriots from local scenes in Olympia, Washington and Washington D.C. Correlating the punk approach with third-wave feminism of Riot Grrrl and community involvement, Kicking Giant was part of an emerging group of bands and labels that eschewed the traditional goals of a career in rock for an active engagement with the audience and a pursuit of an independent means of livelihood.

During this period they performed regularly, playing shows with bands such as Bratmobile, Tsunami, Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, and Unrest, as well as local NY bands, Sleepyhead and Versus—their community of bands expanded further when Kicking Giant traveled to Olympia to perform at the International Pop Underground Convention in 1991. Kicking Giant relocated to Olympia in 1992, continuing to record and tour, establishing themselves as one of the most riveting live bands of the era.

Halo was issued in 1993 as a compilation of the band’s work since its inception—a mix of previously released songs on cassette and more recently recorded artifacts made since their relocation to Olympia. The concept of the album was to take advantage of the expanded capacity of the CD format and create an ersatz mixtape that reflected the diverse sonic palette of the band. When Halo was first released in 1993, the original vision for this record was that a fellow misfit of wide ranging taste and a voracious hunger might cross paths with it and though she may be perplexed at first, upon further listening, connect the dots by her own design and make it her own private soundtrack, from one oddball to another. Now in 2017, we present Halo as an open love letter to the fellow travelers from the heady days of zines and letters and mail order records, and our hope that the spirit of openness may still have a place in connecting with faraway strangers and celebrating our shared passion for noise and beautiful collisions.

Lycox is of course part of a newer generation that keeps adding to the sum, but he is already inspiring a younger set of producers. "Sonhos & Pesadelos" helps materialize a multiverse of bold, shiny chrome architecture, staying true to the original kuduro backbone while Lycox organizes new forms, song structures and even artificial life. If you can't call it "raw" it's only because this is mental space translated into sound. The physicality of the music is but one element in Lycox's ambitious take on dance music, although we should really say pop music, such is the melodic and harmonic forces at work. "Solteiro" could be just an ambient beauty but the abnormally long 4-minute mark reveals layers of masterful songcrafting well outside what some might still be tempted to classify as "ethnic". ‘The Underdogg’ is DJ Tre's Hyperdub debut EP for Hyperdub. He contributed two brilliant tracks to our DJ Rashad tribute set ‘Next Life’, but compared to other long term members of the Teklife footwork crew, he hasn’t released much, so we're very happy to bring him out to play again here. Tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Encouraged by Rashad and his partner DJ Spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork's ascent to global popularity. On this EP his sound, for the most part, is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. It features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he's got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons. The EP starts with ‘It’s House Hybrid’, which has its musical roots in Chip E's ‘It's House’, one of the very earliest house tracks. It’s a tried and tested dancefloor devastator on dubplate, built on a crackling and hiccuping juke 4/4 which grows in intensity, until an Amen drum break cracks it open and joins the kick in the onslaught. ‘A Hammond Jam’ matches a moody organ with rolling bass and drums. ‘Get Dat Ass Up!’ bounces against a twitching melody. ‘Tha Rhodez Jam!’ micro-edits a delicate Rhodes piano sample into flickering shapes against switching 8 bar patterns of drums that go from rolling to soca-like pulses with whistles. If you, the discerning record collector, has even a passing interest in the posthumously named genre “acid folk”, surely the name Ed Askew is in your golden pantheon. Askew recorded the sublimely gorgeous LP Ask the Unicorn in 1968 for the legendary proto-DIY label ESP records, which has now been recognized as a god-damn underground classic. Armed only with a tiple (sort of a South American mandolin) and his lilting neigh of a voice (and bearing superficial resemblances to labelmates Pearls Before Swine, and heady UK acoustic folkers Incredible String Band), Askew spun tales of doomed sisters, crashing universes, budding gay love, and a serious fondness for roses on his rare, precious and beautiful album. After this lone release, Ed Askew seemingly vanished in the romantic mists of time . . . until a second, previously unreleased album, surfaced in 2003, Little Eyes — recorded but a few years after Ask the Unicorn, and every bit as honey-dipped by the musical gods. Since then, Askew has undergone a rightful resurgence, and surely everyone that ever dug a Donovan or Devendra tune has taken notice, so Ed’s obscure 1984 cassette Imperfiction was also reissued by

In early 2015 I was asked to perform 12 minutes of music during a runway show as part of New York Fashion Week. I agreed and began composing a 12-minute piece which I could perform on my own with a few different instruments and some looping pedals. I made a recording of the piece and sent it over to my contacts at the fashion show . . . but a few days before I was to fly out to New York, they wrote back and told me they actually just wanted me to play a few older songs that they were already familiar with. Feeling slightly disappointed, I shelved the other piece, giving it the title If I Were A Runway Model. It is with great pleasure that I now present this piece in a collection of commissioned works spanning the last decade . . . it’s All Together Again. This group of oddball works does indeed include a couple pieces written for weddings (Our Future In Wedlock and The Walk), and a song someone asked me to write as a gift for his wife on their first year wedding anniversary (Emily). And indeed, there’s a 17-minute piece written to accompany a ferry boat ride in Istanbul (A Ride On The Bosphorus). A few of the pieces were written for films (Robbie’s Song, Atlantic and Seeing Things), and one for a kind of interactive installation (Unsung Heroes). In my early days of recording, I took pride in playing all the different instruments myself and doing the recording myself as well. And then at some point I started branching out, working with other musicians and recording engineers. But this record is very dear to me in that it’s a return to that original approach . . . playing all the different instruments myself, working with my limits on each one, and my own limits in recording and mixing. I’ve always held a broad curiosity for all different instruments and all different styles of music, and if nothing else I hope this record will portray that curiosity, and my pure love for this thing we call music. Can you dig it? The cover art was made by Peter himself in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, by cutting and sticking different coloured paper fragments to depict the individuality of each track.

About Nandi Rose Plunkett writes, records and performs under the name Half Waif. Her music is a richly layered collage of blinking electronic soundscapes, echoes of Celtic melodies and the sad chord changes of 19th-century art music. Over the last several years, while touring as a member of Pinegrove, Half Waif self-released two EPs and two albums. It was with 2016’s Probable Depths that Half Waif caught the attention of the worldwide music media, with NPR singling out track ‘Turn Me Around’ and Pitchfork awarding it their coveted Best New Track distinction. It was also during this time that Half Waif’s relationship with Cascine began. Salinas Records is proud to announce the release of the debut full-length from Minneapolis, MN indie/punk band Partial Traces. The self-titled debut will see an official release on November 17th with pre-orders going live later this month. Partial Traces will follow the band’s Outside E.P., which is available via Bandcamp. Partial Traces members have been part of some of the most exciting punk bands in the vibrant Minneapolis music scene; The Soviettes, Dear Landlord, The Gateway District, and Rivethead. Partial Traces finds the band members continuing the spirit of punk, while also letting each of the songs on their debut breathe, and expand just exactly what the notion of punk is. When The Gateway District dissolved in 2015, members Maren Macosko, Nate Gangelhoff, and Brad Lokkesmoe wanted to continue playing music together so they added Mike Rose to the fold, and became Partial Traces. The four members of Birthing Hips operate like a finely tuned machine: each part operating independently, but when functioning together as a whole, it yields tremendously effective results. Although their rock and roll roots are undeniable, the genre’s cliches are consciously avoided - intros can be more like preludes, the verse/chorus format is only loosely followed, and endings are creatively fragmented and self-destructive. The traditional format of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals are simultaneously tied to inventive song structures, but also free to improvise individually, creating a looseness and tension that draws as much from jazz as it does from punk. Wendy Eisenberg’s guitar takes on many forms, proving that she is in in full control of her instrument - at times Sun City Girls, sometimes Slayer, other times Sonny Sharrock. Her complex 32nd note passages weave seamlessly with Andres Abenante’s mammoth basslines, burning holes through his impeccably placed and deeply deliberate riff structures. Owen Liza’s drumming sprays forth in a frantic shuffle, darting in and out of rhythm with plenty of individual character. Their range on the kit is displayed by switching from blastbeats, to jazz shuffles, to locked-in grooves at the drop of a dime. Carrie Furniss’ vocals tie everything together with her highly dynamic voice, using whispers, howling, and classic dramatic embellishments as her weapons of communication. In the profound moments when all of these roles align and lock together, it is a truly powerful musical moment that can be devastatingly satisfying to the listener. These recordings were all performed live in real time, a quality which not only adds a tangible rawness to the sound, but also demonstrates the improvisatory tightness of its players. The lyrical themes on ‘Urge To Merge’ range from menacing to sarcastic to existential, reflective of a person pushed to their boiling point in the face of social bullshit and modern injustice. Birthing Hips’ juxtaposition of female vocals with blistering noise rock suggests notions of traditional femininity being smashed to pieces, like glitter being sprayed out of a can of mace. The Ah ‘Common Bliss’ Cassette/Digital NNA invites you to step inside The Ah, a unique sound world concocted in the mind of New York City-based musician Jeremy Gustin. Known best for his talents on the drum set, Gustin has recorded and toured the world with the likes of Delicate Steve, David Byrne, Rubblebucket, Marc Ribot, his band Star Rover, and many more. On ‘Common Bliss,’ Gustin shares his personal music with the world for the first time, opening the door to The Ah for all to enter. Though instead of considering this music a “solo project,” Gustin instead views The Ah as a collaboration with his own imagination and the world around him. This mentality makes way for an openness and liberation, letting the sounds come to him through dedicated experimentation instead of seeking them out. ‘Common Bliss’ is a largely electronic record, utilizing sampling techniques, synthesizers, and drum programming to create a cohesive signature sound with enough personality to exist in a league of its own. Though it fits into no preconceived mold, The Ah tastefully borrows subtle stylistic idiosyncrasies from a multitude of genres such as pop, dub, hip-hop, IDM, and even world music, further contributing to its originality. Given Gustin’s background as a committed musician, these songs are fully developed structurally, indicating a songwriter’s approach to creating left field electronic music. Melody plays a central role here, traversing a variety of moods throughout the album like a cinematic safari through a colorful topography. Ironically enough, there is no drum set present on this record, though Gustin’s talents for rhythm are applied to thoughtful electronic programming, revealing inventive patterns and textures that venture toward more complex rhythmic structures than your average 4/4 looping.

What makes the music of The Ah truly stand out is it’s use of field recordings and organic found sounds to literally breathe life into the music. Frogs, sheep, dolphins, guinea pigs, and baby rhinos are just a few of the creatures that accompany these tracks. Humor and unpredictability are put to good use - the cartoonish, evocative samples ping pong their way throughout the tracks, giving the album a candy-coated quality, steeped in colorful psychedelia. The incredibly lyrical melodies make it easy to imagine vocals, and though occasional textural vocals are present, Gustin instead opts for abstraction through sampling. This pushes narrative and context to the back seat in order to make way for pure sound and imagination, but also for more complex emotions and ambiguity. This emphasis on playfulness gives some insight into the mind of it’s creator: Gustin goes beyond the motions of merely “making a record” and instead has crafted a whole world of his own to innocently explore, a by-product of creative practice and the process of making music without expectation. The Ah is a prime example of a highly personalized music that is a pure and direct extension of it’s creator.

At its core, Organn is a record about love and duality. Taking inspiration from Isidore-Lucien Ducasse's poem ‘Les Chants de Maldoror’, the record is antagonistic yet often drops its temper to reveal blistered beauty within the chaos. Such are the condradictory elements within the compositions themselves: widescreen claustrophobia; glimmering sludge; piercing VHS ambience. Visuals come courtesy of French mixed-media artist, Thomas Hauser. Hauser's imagery similarly evokes retrograde surrealism and further insists on a narrative at work here, with obscured characters playing out alongside mantric piano, filmic vox and hyperspeed jungle.

Brett Naucke’s Multiple Hallucinations distills the Chicago-based artist’s extensive experimentation with modular synth systems into a rapid-fire program of high resolution textures and layered networks of rhythm. The album speeds through thirty contrasting sketches in thirty minutes as Naucke builds up and then jettisons his dense fields of sound one by one, sketching a tightly woven narrative strewn with unpredictable peaks of noise and valleys of ambient drift. Multiple Hallucinations follows Naucke’s split with Pulse Emitter on Hausu Mountain in early 2017, adding to a catalog of LPs on Spectrum Spools and Nihilist, and tape releases on labels like Umor Rex, Nostilevo, and his own now defunct Catholic Tapes (in addition to his recent membership in seminal Chicago experimental industrial group ONO). Naucke populates his electronic vignettes with a vast array of compositional strategies that illustrate in equal measure the capabilities of synthesizer performance and the level of sophistication he brings to arrangement and tonal sculpting. Fine grain washes of drone billow behind webs of percussive clicks and snaps, as onomatopoeic squelches and baroque melodic structures pop into view for fleeting moments. Multiple Hallucinations establishes discrete atmospheres and then complicates them with juxtaposed elements or sudden shifts in intensity, all within miniature frameworks that Naucke edited and stitched together in post-production after a regimen of daily tinkering and recording. The strictly enforced brevity establishes a disorienting narrative motion akin to a psychedelic trip experience, lacking in easy referents or solid ground to hold onto. But Naucke’s compositions never seem random or at odds with one another, as each beat and each blip fits into a logical whole animated by surprise and diversity.

Form A Log’s brain-melting At A Festival is reborn on Hausu Mountain after a strictly limited self-release. The trio composed of Ren Schofield (Container), Noah Anthony (Profligate), and Rick Weaver (formerly known as Dinner Music) come together from whatever corners of the US they currently reside in to lay out material for group improvisations focused on the manipulation and juxtaposition of live cassette feeds. Recorded off the cuff after a particularly rowdy weekend in Providence in 2015 which culminated in a hungover hard-boiled egg eating contest, At A Festival testifies to the insane lengths three friends will go to surprise and baffle each other and their audience. Rules of taste and decorum mean nothing to Form A Log, as they populate their tracks with chopped nonsense vocals, pummeling acoustic and electronic percussion, and peals of guitar and synth. Punk Slime Recordings are proud to announce that Stockholm’s finest garage punk band Gestures have joined their roster, with a new EP titled Bad Taste due on November 17 on 7” vinyl and digitally. Originally the solo project of guitarist/vocalist Sick Vic, Gestures have now expanded into a trio with Blom joined by Don Jovi on bass and Simon on drums and the Bad Taste EP is the first full band recordings from Gestures. Gestures first appeared last spring with the debut EP Shattered Mind, a lo-fi garage punk explosion recorded, written and performed by Sick Vic in his living room, which we had on repeat for most of last year and which was recently given the vinyl treatment by Stockholm garage rock institution Push My Buttons. could actually be hit singles? Ah, them’s was the days. The Romantics, Cheap Trick, the Raspberries, the Dwight Twilley Band Oh, about the Dwight Twilley Band — while Dwight got the marquee and the glory, bassist and drummer Phil Seymour sang along and just so happened to co-write a good number of the band’s output, including their big single, “I’m on Fire.” So when the Twilley Band petered out, Seymour gathered enough material to snag his own label deal, this time with his name out front. Writer James Chrispell calls Phil Seymour, the solo debut from Dwight Twilley’s bandmate, “a real fine pop masterwork.” “Precious to Me” landed in the Top 25 at the beginning of 1981, and it is a snappy delight. “I Found a Love” follows in that vein, while “Love You So Much” has the pauses that made the work with the Dwight Twilley Band so much fun (this was the first of two titles written by Twilley). The lighthearted music is serious stuff crafted from the bubblegum school, but with an edge and without all the angst Nick Lowe would inject. “Baby It’s You” isn’t the Shirelles/Beatles song, but rather a driving, jangly statement of immediate love from Seymour. Bobby Fuller’s classic “Let Her Dance,” with electric handclaps, is the perfect ending to side one and a perfect fit. The Sky’s In Love With You A funny thing happened to brothers Greg and Darren Atkinson on their way to recording a second album for their duo project ‘Worker Bees’ – they realised they were making an Ups and Downs album. It was partly a reconnection with their love of vocal harmonies, partly the familiar ringing tones of ex Ups and Downs’ guitarist John Flade who, along with new bass player Alex Ronayne, had recently joined the ‘Bees, and partly the kind of songs that Greg was writing that were recapturing a flavour of Brisbane’s “striped, sunlight sound”, to coin a phrase from Go-Between Robert Forster. A phone call to Ups and Downs other guitarist Peter Shaw, living in Brisbane, sealed the deal – Peter’s remotely recorded guitar parts were flown into the recording along with a brand new song that echoed the title of their classic mini album ‘Sleepless’, and bingo - Ups and Downs first album of new material in nearly 30 years was born! Entirely self-recorded and self-financed (no desperate crowd funding pleas from these stalwarts), The Sky’s In Love With You is a vinyl length journey into melody and melancholy, hooks and harmonies, jingle and jangle, that will warm the aging hearts of Ups and Downs fans and excite younger lovers of classic indie pop. You can hear elements of the Church on Fires Amongst Us, early Cure on Gideon, even the Hoodoo Gurus on True Love Waste, but this is no simple exercise in nostalgia. The Sky’s In Love With You sounds fresh, modern and has an urgency that belies the band’s years.
