Shamir is Shamir and remains Shamir through and through, no matter what the universe puts him through. You may know the singularly named artist (like Madonna or Cher) from his 2015 debut hit record Ratchet, beloved by NPR listeners and club kids alike. After quickly rising to underground fame with his Northtown EP in 2014, the DIY popstar made a sonic splash with Ratchet’s lead single “On The Regular,” a poppy banger and commercial success. But how to follow all that up? Shamir, who came from the dusty dunes of Las Vegas, to Brooklyn’s Silent Barn, to the Philly indie scene (and all over the world inbetween), wanted to go back to what had inspired him from the beginning. Outsider music, country & punk. Raw & vulnerable tunes, stripped down to their emotional core. And what do you do if XL drops you? If you’re Shamir, you put out an album you recorded yourself all in one weekend, whilst questioning the decision to quit music. The record was called Hope and Shamir self-released it via SoundCloud during the spring of 2017, with no promotion or label support. Regardless & naturally, it was a critical hit. Now, happily joining San Francisco based indie label Father/Daughter Records, Shamir is excited to share his upcoming new album, titled Revelations, out November 3, 2017. Recorded May 2017 in his hometown following the release of Hope, Revelations is full of what the titled implies. The new album is stacked with stunning exhalations of emotion, as Shamir continues making music for misfits and those of us who feel so emo sometimes that we get annoyed at how we’re a cliché, but see the beauty in it anyway. Revelations is much more minimal in instrumentation & production compared to Rachet, but is even more full in sound and feeling. In some other timeline, there’s an unknown John Hughes film entirely set to Revelations. It’s the warmth in this apocalyptic neon and pastel future we find ourselves in. It’s the breath we take when we look up from our phones. They’re Shamir’s Revelations, and you should listen up.

THE APPLES in stereo TONE SOUL EVOLUTION RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 3, 2017 Tone Soul Evolution was the second album recorded by The Apples in stereo, originally released in 1997. This is the first of four albums by the band that Yep Roc Records will be re-releasing on vinyl in late 2017 and early 2018. Of the album, A.V. Club wrote, “Tone Soul Evolution offers up plenty of fine pop music, delivered in such a way that is plenty enjoyable.” This record, along with the other three reissues being released by Yep Roc have been out of print for over 20 years and this is the first time they have been released exclusively on vinyl. It’s an anomaly to make a record created out of the pleasure and desire of simply making music together. A record with no commercial aspirational location. The new duo record from Steve Gunn (guitars) and John Truscinski (drums, synths), Bay Head, makes it look easy, carving out a space where none existed before with assurance, resonating beautiful along the way. If I were forced to put what John and Steve play into a genre I would simply call it “music.” There’s a quality of timelessness to it without being nostalgic that is impossible to manufacture. It comes from their years of playing together based on a formula of chemistry. Bands are fragile ecosystems. The best ones have a melding that results in a musicality that otherwise can’t be found in a melody or lyric, or an effect pedal. While Bay Head is the third record the duo has recorded together, John has played drums and helped shape the songs and the sound on all Steve’s more song-configured albums. Their bond is tight, unique, and effective. As an instrumental record Bay Head has no literal voice. It doesn’t need it, as the constant flow between the drums and guitar describe fully and without a narrator. Steve’s guitar leads you along a contemplative path that describes an inner monologue that is more expressive than if there were words. Some of the guitar parts are worked out and then set free, improvised in the playing. But it’s hard to tell. It all sounds deliberate. Bay Head is the accumulation of the duo’s years of playing music together where each can guess where the other is going to go next. The cover collage by their longtime friend Bill Nace reflects what is both abstract and figurative about this unique musical collaboration. As I drink my morning coffee, I use the Gunn-Truscinski Duo's records as a way to make my way into the day. As I am writing, answering email and the like, I find that the spirit of their music matches the gentle light and morning coolness that breeds inspiring thoughts before the LA sun blasts it all away and the day’s minutiae take over. Basically, Bay Head is great music to procrastinate to!

LIIMA was born as much of breaking old habits as building new ones, and their second album, 1982 (co-produced with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear), provides a masterclass in pushing beyond comfort zones. Few things better illustrate the band’s urge to shake things up than the tour they undertook ten months after the release of their debut album, ii. Before recording, they decided take the show on the snow-covered roads of the northernmost realms of Norway, where the sun never rises in winter. LIIMA’s tradition of abandoning familiar routines began before they were even a band. In 2013 Clausen, Rasmus Stolberg and Mads Brauer first met Rönkkö, who would prove the catalyst behind its formation. The three Danes – who remain the key components of Efterklang – were promoting the release of their fourth album, Piramida, and their search for a new touring drummer brought them face to face with the Finn. He performed with Efterklang until February 2014 when they played a show alongside a symphony orchestra and another ten or so musicians billed as The Last Concert. “It wasn’t our final show,” Brauer confirms, “and we knew it. We just needed a change.” As if to prove this, they reunited in July to play a Finnish festival, this time under the name Efterklang & Tatu Rönkkö. They spent the preceding week in a small cottage nearby where they sought to create an entirely new repertoire. Though they didn’t know it at the time, this would be the birth of LIIMA. 1982 was written during four residencies, beginning in January, 2016 at The London Edition. They reassembled at another hotel in Copenhagen before embarking upon tours of North and South America. They’d reconvene between trips to continue work, first in a music conservatory in Viseu, Portugal and then finally in August at Berlin’s Michelberger Hotel. By the time they gathered in Mankku Studios in Porvoo in the Finnish countryside LIIMA were more than ready to begin recording with Chris Taylor as co-producer. Their Norwegian school trip had ended two days earlier. 1982 finds LIIMA - musically and lyrically – exploring themes that shaped their youth while looking forward to a future which is as uncertain as it ever might have been Here the musicians stake their claim firmly to both their new name and their new sound. For a band originally founded upon enthusiastic acts of spontaneity, 1982 represents a huge, sophisticated leap forward. The decision to form LIIMA was as bold as their new sound, and the results speak for themselves. The Cornshed Sisters are Jennie Brewis, Cath Stephens, Liz Corney (moonlighting from the Field Music band) and Marie Nixon (erstwhile of 90s upstarts Kenickie); four singer-songwriters based in Tyne and Wear, who weave together pop, folk, ballad and protest music into a unique and distinctive style. The Cornshed Sisters have been away for a while (their last album, Tell Tales, was released back in 2012), but we can probably let them off as they’ve been using the time well, becoming mothers, bringing millions of pounds of funding into major Sunderland arts projects, recording and touring with Field Music, and somehow making time to write songs and record this album together.

WALTER GIBBONS – JUNGLE MUSIC Strut present a new reissue of Walter Gibbons’ ‘Jungle Music’ compilation LP, the definitive collection of Gibbons’ groundbreaking remixes during the heyday of New York’s disco era. Starting out as a DJ and known for his skilful manipulation of percussive disco breaks at his Galaxy 21 residency in Manhattan, Gibbons brought this ethic to his remixes from the start with his first outing for Salsoul, a re-work of Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ which completely disassembled the track for the dancefloor. He developed a knack for drawing the rhythmic essence out of both the brilliant and the mediocre as tracks like Jakki’s ‘Sun… Sun… Sun’ were transformed into unique abstract dancefloor beat edits. The tracks spawned a series of groundbreaking remixes, with many versions only appearing on acetate for his own personal use as a DJ including Gladys Knight’s ‘It’s A Better Than Good Time’. He continued to work with Salsoul (Loleatta Holloway) and West End Records (Bettye Lavette) before branching out to include more leftfield material in his work – collaborations with Loose Joints’ Steve D’Acquisto (Sandy Mercer), Steve Standard (Strafe) and Arthur Russell would all follow, a natural fit for Gibbons’ uncompromising remix style. After a short time based in Seattle during the late ‘70s, where he played at the Sanctuary nightclub, he returned to New York and, in his later years, he discovered God and refused to play records with a negative message. Tragically, he died of an AIDS related illness during the ‘90s, a largely forgotten figure. Now revered as a true pioneer of the art of the remix, Gibbons’ key releases are brought together on this essential celebration. Shaneera is the English mispronunciation of the Arabic word shanee’a, literally meaning "outrageous, nefarious, hideous, major and foul.” In one iteration of the word, as queer slang used in Kuwait and some Arab countries, a positive and desirable light is shed on these attributes. Shaneera refers to a gender-defying persona, of being an evil queen. You know a Shaneera when you behold one. Over five energetic club tracks, Al Qadiri explores this dark-sided character with friends Bobo Secret (the leading vocalist on the record), Lama3an, Chaltham, and Naygow, in their debut recorded appearance. The lyrics are suggestive, imploring, shady and loving, some original and some re-recorded material from Grindr chats, online drag and femme comedy skits. The language is a mixture of Kuwaiti and Egyptian Arabic, and one Iraqi proverb, Sonically, the record combines Khaleeji (Arab Gulf), Western drum kits and Arabesque melodies. On the cover, Al Qadiri appears as Shaneera, her evil extreme femme alter ego, the design inspired by stale pop diva record cover imagery from the Arab world. Conceptually, the EP follows Al Qadiri’s long term exploration of gender identity and performance in the Gulf. Her natural look, at odds with the conventional presentation and performance of femininity in the region, is transformed on the cover into a maximum femme look inspired by a mid 2000s Kuwaiti trend of extreme makeup. What would pass at a cursory glance as femme drag was actually the norm at a specific time in Kuwaiti women’s fashion. ‘Shaneera’ the record lands somewhere in an undisclosed setting and is a love letter to evil and benevolent queens around the world.

n5MD is proud to announce Heartless, the new album from Brock Van Wey's epic ambient guise bvdub. Those who have been able catch him live have found themselves undoubtedly immersed in sound. With Van Wey's “ebb“ warmly cradling you in juxtaposition to the “flow” that teeters near the thresholds of human aural acceptance. There is no denying it, he excels at and revels in filling spaces with swirling waves of emotive tone. Heartless, for those keeping track, is his 29th bvdub album, originally borne from the intention of reflecting the concepts and experience of a series of live shows from months and years before... a kind of prologue, as it were, that could further explain the painful impetus behind those live forays, and the life he attempted to escape within them. However, shortly into the writing process, he found Heartless became something more than even he intended: an even greater layered, monumental, and autonomous experience than its original intention - and swept itself into a life of its own. We've been treated to beat-less bvdub works before, but with Heartless, Van Wey has created something far more monolithic than what has come before it. The album starts as bvdub album's sometimes do: warm washes of sound below the soulfully angelic vocals that Van Wey often gravitates to, this time distant echoes, it seems. But with Heartless this is only your introduction... easing you in before plunging to the deep end. As time passes, what voices existed drown below visceral, amorphous, unabashed waves of sound that are wholeheartedly more sinister in temperament than his previous works, and the perfect manifestation of n5MD's "heart to hands" ideology.

BACKGROUND Angel-Ho proclaimed virtuoso, also known as Angelo Valerio/Deep In The Pussy/Ruffle Queen, and a co-founder of NON Worldwide, is in celebration of what makes them uniquely queer. With a limited run of their vinyl titled Red Devil, Angel-Ho presents an array of classical electronic inspired cacophony. This is a chance for the symphony to be contextualized, since its release not having any word spoken by the artist – a Beyoncé moment if you will. Red Devil is an autobiographical mix where by Angel presents the realities of the mind, one’s ability to shift their perspectives of the world, through applying the principles of balance in their music. All which is deeply connected to the experiences queer and trans people encounter daily, be it personal demons to greeting violence in public – to the reasoning of joy among the chaos, Angel describes it as “transformation”. “So many people live in fear of transformation – and I am not necessarily making it a point to gender, sexuality, but not limited to recent political or social acts in 2017. I enjoy transformation like many of my fellow artists around the globe. Everyone forgets that I studied art and have done performances prior to the release of Ascension. Being able to see beyond my mind and make things tangible is a mirror of how I move through space, time, and transformation, wasting no time in doing so I want to be the best I can be because in doing so I see the cause and effect of being true to one’s nature, to do what makes you happy with what you’ve got. Red Devil is led by a fierce orchestra and choir, of which Angel-Ho visualises animates in their dreamscape, not being reduced to its potential as a digital sound file. It is inspired greatly by the collision of music styles and genres and true to the proceeding agency of Angel’s own envisioning of a, moffie only, klopse troupe roaming through the neighbourhood at 2am in the Summer with their sharpened instruments ghostly parading the echo of their afternoon rehersals. Red Devil becomes a celebration of all that is denied by ourselves and others. The self-saboteur, as RuPaul Andre Charles heralds, is what is vanquished through one’s ability to name it and deconstruct the information as to why one would perceive a dismal perception of reality – what halts one’s ability to achieve and excel. It is through this action we can equip ourselves with the tools we need to perceiver in a world where we living queer, breathing trans, bodies have to everyday prepare ourselves for the worst when leaving the solitude of our homes and safety of our family.

There is a long-standing love affair between DJ Harvey and Pikes, Ibiza. As well as coming back for his third consecutive ‘Mercury Rising’ residency, the legendary ‘DJs’ DJ has been appointed ‘Cultural Attaché’ for Pikes, meaning his magic touch and feel-good presence will create even more special moments at Pikes this summer, including the launch of new label, Pikes Records. In 2015 DJ Harvey made his hugely anticipated return to Ibiza and made Pikes his home for his Mercury Rising debut, a concept inspired by the beauty of the real Ibiza, the incredible history of Pikes and a genuine love for music. The love, the dancing, the music and the Balearic spirit perfectly and poetically encapsulated by DJ Harvey has seen Mercury Rising widely recognised as the most special night to embrace the island in over a decade. The next step in the Harvey and Pikes story sees him launch Pikes Records – the first record label founded by Pikes owners and Ibiza Rocks Co-Founders Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle. RIYL: Felt, The Wake, Orange Juice, The Pastels, Feelies, Belle and Sebastian, Rat Columns. David West is a musical artist from Western Australia based in New York City. He's been active in the shifting sands of underground pop for over a decade. Not dissimilar to the main character in Star Wars, his musical career began in a backwater desert village, in this case, Perth, before he migrated to more glittering metropolises like San Francisco and Melbourne, and finally landing in his current home of New York. He presently plays in the contemporary outfits Rat Columns, Rank/ Xerox and Liberation. In the past he has participated in such groups as Lace Curtain, Burning Sensation and Total Control. DW began releasing eponymous platters in 2015 with the Night People/Happy Endin' full-length cassette Drop Out Of Collage. This was followed in 2016 by the Peace Or Love LP which featured the radio semi-hit ‘Dream On Dreamer’. DW's move into the "own-name" category of artists came as his other bands began to develop defined identities. He felt that recording under his own name would be an excellent umbrella for both roving experimentation and a more frivolous, post-modern style of pop music that would not fit in the frameworks of his other projects. Also, after crafting band names for over a decade, it was just time. Cherry On Willow is DW's audio pop vision for 2017. It differs from the last two DW releases by introducing a more collaborative framework, creating the backing group Teardrops - an open ensemble of friends and collaborators, including Bob Jones of Eaters, Louis Hooper of Rat Columns, Mikey Young of Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Raven Mahon of Grass Widow, dynamite drummer Griffin Harrison and other supremely talented individuals from the past and future. The recordings were quite live and spontaneous, hoping to catch some of the magic involved in speed and improvisation, harvesting creative sparks from his musical colleagues and himself. The album was recorded in various places in the latter half of 2016 - by DW in his practice space in New York City; in a rental rehearsal room in Glasgow; and a garage studio in Guildford, Western Australia, where Rat Columns' recent LP Candle Power was also recorded. Cherry On Willow was recorded quickly and with a 'first thought best thought' philosophy, to capture an old-school pop feeling, with rough edges intact, human movements tracked and uncut. Swiping liberally from various strains of underground pop, glam, rock'n'roll, synth-pop and disco.
