Overview / Warp presents Take Me Apart, the debut album from contemporary R&B’s icon-in-the-making, Kelela. Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and sonic visionary Angel Deradoorian has never shied away from testing aural and conceptual boundaries in her work. On her last album, The Expanding Flower Planet, Deradoorian led listeners through a kaleidoscopic journey that explored new rhythmic ideas culled from ancient traditions. Yet her latest album, the entrancing and seismic Eternal Recurrence, is unlike anything she’s ever recorded. The stark album, which predominantly features Deradoorian’s riveting vocals co-mingling with a handful of instruments, is a testament to an artist who found new depths both within herself and in her process through allowing herself to be driven entirely by instinct. Right before The Expanding Flower Planet was released in 2015, Deradoorian decamped to Big Sur for a formative ten days and began crafting what would become Eternal Recurrence, out October 06, 2017 on Anticon. She then completed the mini-LP with co-producer Ben Greenberg after a move to a remote upstate New York town in 2016. The extremities of the California region—where mountain meets sea and life comingles with death—reverberates on “Mountainside,” a texturally lush tune about learning to feel comfort in being alone, and mourning the dissolution of a certain kind of love.

Fittingly, Eternal Recurrence, brims with meditative affirmations that mimic cycles, planetary and otherwise. The collection of songs are woven together by structurally abstract “thoughts in sound,” as Deradoorian puts it. It breathes through drones, synthesizers and vocal acrobatics peripherally inspired by the music of Alice Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. The stirring songs comprising Eternal Recurrence also probe an uninhibited form of expression, particularly within the warbles of “Love Arise” and the watery underworld of emotion on the instrumental piece “Ausar Temple.” At times the process was a struggle, because it involved reckoning with the past and resisting the present in order to rebuild herself for the future. Many realizations came into sharp focus from those isolated times, like the song “Mirrorman,” a stark near-limerick and deft study in intervals. The reflective song circles the theme of individuation—specifically, the idea of becoming holistic by honoring both the feminine and masculine elements we each carry within us. Meanwhile “Return-Transcend,” the eight-minute opus on the mini-LP, is an affirmation of both being one with the universe and at peace with the unknown. Honoring and extending gratitude towards friends, and their individual strengths, became crucial to constructing Eternal Recurrence, as well. Deradoorian wrote the entrancing vocal harmonies of “Nia In the Dark” for a friend, the Los Angeles-based musician Nia Andrews. “We had these conversations where she’s never really felt seen in certain ways, and I know a lot of people don’t feel seen,” Deradoorian explains. “But they do so much and they inspire so many people around them. So it’s kind of talking about like, ‘You may not be seen by all, but these are all the things I see in you, and I see what you’re doing and how you affect everyone and you’re such an important thread in people’s lives.” The transcendent “Love Arise,” which opens Eternal Recurrence, was also written as an ode to a friend, Nai Palm of Hiatus Kaiyote. trange Ranger (fka Sioux Falls) is an Indie-Rock / Post-Punk band from Montana, now based out of Portland, Oregon. Formed by Isaac Eiger and Fred Nixon and solidified by the duo’s mutual love of early Modest Mouse, the band’s breakthrough debut full-length, the sprawling Rot Forever, was named one of Consequence of Sound’s ‘Top 50 Albums of 2016.’ Later that year, the follow-up EP, Sunbeams Through Your Head, was cited as one of Stereogum’s “Great EPs from 2016” and lead to Strange Ranger’s inclusion in the publications list of “Best New Bands.”
O
ver the course of last Winter, Strange Ranger recorded its sophomore full-length, Daymoon. Naturally evolving from the expansiveness of Rot Forever in favor of a smarter and more focused approach, the album transmits as something uniquely hushed and organic. While previous material felt more like a band exploring numerous diverse avenues, Daymoon pulls back and showcases heightened attention to detail. Still, the honest, heart-on-sleeve songwriting remains, even if the band has chosen subtler paths to deliver its message. Daymoon is a tasteful and nuanced evolution for Strange Ranger - one that will undoubtedly serve as a bridge to the band’s continuing and singular evolution.

Debut albums are rarely fully-formed. They’re ground zero for artists to experiment, breathing room to allow musicians to form identities within their project. Atlanta, GA’s Blis. debut LP, No One Loves You, avoids the trope: it’s an album of a band that’s lived a lot of life, exploring sonic realms that on the surface, should not go together, but manage to find cohesion. The record mosaics their influences - the intricate rock riffs of American Football, Pedro the Lion’s midtempo balladry gone awry with crucial aggression, indie rock sensibility that has mainstream press publications referencing Modest Mouse and Silversun Pickups. It was their 2015 Starting Fires in My Parents House EP that inspired Sargent House Records to sign them, a cathartic, unexpected release that garnered press from top-tier places like Pitchfork, Stereogum and Consequence of Sound. It’s easy to see that something’s in the water - and Blis. have come to prove that it’s not just hype. Far from it. The band officially started recording under the Blis. name a few years ago, but frontman/primary songwriter Aaron Gossett has been pursuing the project for much longer. “It’s pretty much the first musical endeavor I did after high school,” he recounts. “I started biting off more than I could chew so I had a couple of friends help me. We did a record that has since been taken offline. After that we kept going, certain people worked out, certain people didn’t and we finally solidified our lineup around 2012.” The quartet - drummer Jimi Ingman, bassist Luke Jones, guitarist Josiah Smith and Gossett - have found a system that works, though the process was arduous. In the two years since their last EP, they’re at home with their lineup, they’ve spent an impossible

No One Loves You is a record of complex musicianship and even more complicated emotional development despondent songs that criticize the negative forces in Gossett’s life while never feeling particularly hopeless. Almost every track mentions God or religion. “You have these groups of people who feel obligated by tradition and habits to follow a belief system,” he explains. “If you get to the core of a lot of religions, they’re kind of awful: really disgusting homophobic, misogynistic shit.” It’s harsh, but near the heart of Blis. - there’s loving sentiment beneath the percussion, beneath the moments of riotous riffing and explosive texture. Even the title of the record itself reflects the duality of Gossett’s interpretation. “Lost Boy” is a love letter to his partner and a criticism of blind belief: “No one loves you / Like I do,” he sings, later “No god loves you like I do.” As a stand

Evoking a liminal world of uncanny yet warm atmospherics, the album is pervaded by impressionistic contemplation, revealing the roots of Sager’s early connection to the works of Erik Satie, Frédéric Chopin and Claude Debussy. Only on Savage Sea, an astonishing high point of The Pop Group’s seminal debut Y, and Echelon, the desolate closing track on their 2015 return record Citizen Zombie, has Sager’s piano playing been as intimately and sublimely focalized as it is here. For someone who has previously released just two EPs, the vision of Ziúr's music is advanced and precise. It's music which beckons you into an alternate world; wonderfully alien pop music that eschews conventions. She creates eldrich atmospheres that balance gentle melody and warm pop, in which strange elfin voices sing from other worlds and spiralling rhythms feel like entire structures moving. In the latter half of the record these harden into a pounding, martial symphony of steel, and introduce the kind of rough electronic riffs and guitar samples that betray her background in punk. 'U Feel Anything?' was written as a way to think about music as a tool of enlightenment, a de-conditioning force and the kind of yin and yang that can be summed up in the title of one of the songs 'Laughing and Crying are The Same Things', a track which features Swedish pop singer Zhala, whose vocals straddle twisting beats, space and staccato strings. The album also features a collaboration with Aïsha Devi on the epic 'Body of Light', in which Aïsha's vocals are pitched up and down, manipulated and distorted into wispy angelic tones, setting the tone for the first half of the album. There's a process to Ziúr's music that's informed by this wish to get beyond the small things. She says "Putting a relation on what's big and small and certainly meaningless behind our existence; how nothing is everything at the same time etc... it's something that I try to explore again and again by putting myself into a thought process, rather than having everything already formulated." It's a record of powerful, emotional twists and turns and mind-flipping contrasts that resonate with depth. It's All True is an opera-in-suspension from New York ensemble Object Collection based on the complete live archives of iconic underground band Fugazi. Grounded upon the Live Archive series of the Washington DC outfit, composer Travis Just and writer/director Kara Feely's work uses only the incidental music, text and sounds, none of Fugazi's actual songs. An obsessi leap into 1500 hours of gig detritus spanning shows from 1987 obsessive to 2002, and encompassing random feedback, aimless drum noodling, pre-show activist speeches, audience hecklers, and the police breaking up gigs. All of this material is the foundation of an ear-body-and-mind-flossing 100 minutes for 4 voices/performers, 4 electric guitars/basses and 2 percussionists.

Following some ear-catching manoeuvres across releases like last year's self-released 'Only' and 'Lagata', which gained her early fans like Bjork and Dev Hynes (who she supported in the USA), 'Tommy' marks Klein's deepest plunge yet into the “deep, dark ocean” of her musical imagination on her Hyperdub debut. It’s been almost exactly a year since Weaves released their acclaimed debut LP. The self-titled album, which was recently short-listed for the Polaris Prize, was among the most anticipated of the year, and was lauded internationally upon its release for its exuberant approach to guitar pop, which was described as “one of the most unpredictable sounds of 2016” (MTV), and “a triumphant assault on all things conventional” (i-D). "#53" is the album's leadoff track, and sets the tone for a record that sees the band embrace an expansive and ambitious sound that they have only hinted at on previous releases. Driven by an ascending guitar line and the frantic energy of the band's rhythm section, who build to a dramatic crescendo that mirrors the intensity of singer Jasmyn Burke's urgent performance, the track was, according to Burke, written in a burst of creative energy the band built up over the course of a year spent on the road in support of their debut. The record sees Burke extend herself as a performer moving more frequently to the center of arrangements and revealing new facets of her unique and powerful singing voice - as Waters, and the band’s dynamic rhythm section of bassist Zach Bines and drummer Spencer Cole, find ways to interpret the growing diversity of her expression. From the glammy Saturday night strut of “Slicked,” to the stripped-down, pedal steel abetted torch song “Wide Open,” to the searing “Scream,” a warped duet with Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq that likely constitutes Weaves’ wildest recording to date, the album captures a band for whom exploration is a compulsion making a self-assured step into the unknown.

The album was originally released exclusively as part of Douglas’ DD|50: 50th Birthday Recordings box set in 2013. Now this music is being released on its own. The album boasts a sextet of heavyweight New York collaborators working through seven Douglas compositions inspired by repeated visits to the Canadian rocky mountains.
