In 1966 and ‘67, he spent so much time at Columbia Studios in Hollywood that some began to call CBS “Curt Boettcher Studios.” He worked with Tommy Roe, Gene Clark, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Elton John, Emitt Rhodes, and The Beach Boys, among many others. Looking For The Sun is the first release to focus on Boettcher as a producer and arranger rather than a performer, highlighting cuts that were released as singles, most of which have remained out of print since their initial release. Collected here are 21 tracks (18 on LP), all sourced from the original master tapes, which Boettcher either wrote, produced, arranged, or sang on. TRACK LISTING A TYMPANI SYMPHONY OF DEMONIC MAYHEM! Nicholas Carras’ soundtrack for this 1958 “horror” film adds a much needed shot of drama and excitement to the wide range of bizarre charms captured on screen. Carras employs thundering tympani and a small ensemble for an enthralling score, highlighted by a drum-propelled dance and Oscar-worthy dialog. Pressed on demon green vinyl and includes a menacing movie poster! This is the first true soundtrack to this 1958 sci-fi/horror “movie.” Once you’ve seen the film, you’ll never forget it, so take that as either a recommendation or a warning! Despite the low budget Nicholas Carras had to work with that only permitted 22 players (which was small for the time), he takes full advantage of his limited musical resources to make the picture seem much bigger than it otherwise would have been. Thundering tympani provides a lot of that power, with about a dozen brass and woodwind players being used in many different combinations to keep the accompaniment from getting stale. There isn’t a lot of piano in the score because the composer needed organ in many of the cues, and couldn’t afford a second keyboardist. The most memorable piece is obviously the drum-propelled dance, which was also wisely adapted for the film’s main title, but there’s much more to the soundtrack than that. As Carras has demonstrated with Mr. Peters’ Pets, Date Bait, and High School Caesar, even when presented with a ridiculous storyline, he treated the tale with the utmost seriousness. This way, when your disbelief can no longer be suspended, the music provides a steady mainline of entertainment on its own!

Nude Casino prowess is emphasized on the album’s beating heart ‘Tuesday’s Lament’, a five-chapter monologue that wrestles with the strains of mortality and belief, yet still struts with upbeat swagger. Adding a touch of sobriety, both sonically and lyrically, hasn’t stifled Iguana Death Cult’s daredevil ways the slightest, and they make this abundantly clear right from the starting gun. The mighty triptych of title track ‘Nude Casino’, ‘Bright Lights’ and ‘Lorraine’ was pretty much written simultaneously, a testament to the off-the-chain chemistry the quintet, now joined by Jimmy de Kok on keys, developed over the years. For a band as combustible as Iguana Death Cult, only a deep and long-lasting friendship could supersede the sheer musical discord festering from within. Growing up together in the small town of Willemstad, the group formed when singer/guitarist Jeroen Reek decided to finally unite two of his mutual friends: guitarist Tobias Opschoor, aspiring guitarist Justin Boer and drummer Arjen van Opstal. Though Reek was teaching Boer, who is two years his senior, the guitar, a rock band with three guitarists seemed highly impractical. So the band insisted that Boer should take up the bass instead. At first, he did so begrudgingly, but with a deadline of three months till their very first show, he quickly learned to embrace it. The foursome camped out in an old powder house: quite a treacherous place for fervent, guerilla-style rehearsals, as the slightest spark could make the roof go kaboom.

Indeed, Iguana Death Cult’s frenzied beginnings are indicative of their current form: a barely contained force that takes all hands on deck to properly navigate. From that dark bunker all the way to SXSW, they are a great case study on the ways headstrong dilettantism and crafty classical chops can skirmish and thrive. At first, Opschoor could play flamenco flourishes with nimble precision but not a blues riff to save his life, whereas Reek was exactly the other way around, hustling his way up from a primeval punk rock pedigree to more refined stylistics of vintage soul, psychedelic rock and Art Blakey-style acid jazz. Somewhere they met halfway, just like Boer’s brawny bass attack is constantly playing checkers against Van Opstal’s jazz-influenced licks. Because of The Netherlands’ tight-knit infrastructure of venues and festivals, Iguana Death Cult’s momentum as a powerhouse live act climbed at a maniacal pace. Being a band is perhaps one of the few walks in life where work and play mean the exact same thing and Iguana Death Cult’s proactive ethos quickly granted them a steady grassroots following, reaching a summit with 2017’s self-released debut LP The First Stirrings Of Hideous Insect Life . Nude Casino ’s crisper, more unvarnished sonic makeup illustrates a seething skepticism as a counterbalance to the more hedonistic tendencies of yonder. This stunning new release on Soul Jazz Records looks at the explosion of music that came out of the Congo in the years leading up to independence in 1960. Congolese rumba, a wild combination of African, Jazz and Latin influences, created future stars of its now legendary creators – Franco, Grand Kalle, Tabu Ley, Dr. Nico, Papa Wemba – and all feature here in their ground-breaking early groups such as O.K.Jazz, Brazzos, Rock-A-Mambo, African Jazz and The Beguen Band. The Congo is in fact two countries – The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC, formerly Zaire) and the Republic of the Congo. Congo Revolution was first released as a sampler 7” box set for RSD, and this expanded release includes a 50-page booklet/double gatefold and inner sleeves containing extensive text explaining the evolution of the music and history of the two Congos, and how music, politics and popular culture intersected at the point of independence from the two Congos’ European colonisers – Belgium and France – through songs such as ‘Vive Patrice Lumumba,’ and ‘MNC Uhuru,’ which celebrated the Congolese independence leader prior to his political assassination. Also included is the stunning images of the Congolese photographer Jean Depara who documented the Congo’s vibrant nightlife in the period 1955-65 as well as being the official photographer for the superstar Congolese artist Franco up until his death in 1989. Depara also documents the rise of the Bills (Congolese teenagers who dressed as cowboys) and sharp-suited évolués (which later gave rise to the fashion-conscious phenomenon of the Congolese ‘Sapeurs’). These images are reproduced in collaboration with Revue Noire in France. This album comes as a deluxe heavyweight double vinyl with gatefold sleeve and individual inner sleeves, CD with slipcase and 50-page outsize booklet, and as digital release.

Konradsen Saints and Sebastian Stories Out October 25, 2019 on Cascine Konradsen is the Oslo-based duo of Jenny Marie Sabel and Eirik Vildgren. Together they create pensive pop songs that explore the interior and weave a world uniquely their own. An album of new versions of classic tracks by a classic band – and yet so much more besides… Formed in Amsterdam in 1980, Minimal Compact were part of the original post-punk explosion. The band developed a unique mix of propulsive rhythms, spacious bass lines, rich keyboard textures, mesmeric guitar lines, and vocal melodies with a Middle-Eastern inflection. They sounded like nothing that had gone before. The band gained a reputation for energetic, unpredictable, intense shows. Now they have reconvened, together with producer and long-time collaborator Colin Newman ( Wire), to finally capture their music in its true brilliance. Several of the band’s signature songs have been re-recorded using a mix of live recordings and studio tooled performances. The result is an album that radiates vitality and sheer class. Described playfully by its maker as “druggy music by sober people,” Shana Falana’s Darkest Light is as full of mystery, contrast, and paradox as the title would suggest. The Kingston, New York songwriter and record maker works her own deep niche in the psych-rock, shoegaze, and ethereal punk neighborhood. On Darkest Light, she converts all that weird, magical, and occasionally nasty energy into authentic messages of personal empowerment, rebirth, and redemption. “I’ve been around a while,” Falana says. “I was an addict. I worked on the fringe of the sex industry in New York City for two years. I know that even in the darkest lives, everyone still has their light. People still shine. Darkest Light is an album of mantras.” A prolific veteran of both the San Francisco (‘90s) and Brooklyn (‘00s) experimental pop scenes, the Kingston, New York artist crafted Darkest Light with her core team of drummer Mike Amari and producer D. James Goodwin (Kevin Morby, Wand, Heather Woods Broderick). The committed, hypnotic primitivism of Amari’s drumming drives the sludgy and guttural grooves of standout tracks like “Come on Over” and “Darkest Light.” In a partnership now on its third release, Falana and Goodwin architect stormy, heavy, harrowing, and delicate layers of material sound without ever losing the thread of Falana’s slippery, exotic vocal melodies. Brighton-based producer Lara Rix-Martin, is an adventurous, unusual and very contemporary sonic take on the impact of landscape. It’s a kind of storytelling, inspired by the shifting landscapes of her daily walks with her dog on the South Downs. Discussing her under-the-radar debut album 'Ghost on the Stairs' with Aimee Cliff at The Fader in 2017, she noted how she is “drawn to eerie sounds in my work.” This fascination remains on 'Sleepmoss' but the context has changed from the interior and inwards gaze to a much wider, wilder viewpoint. Lara describes her new record as being “about getting lost in the sumptuous divinity of the dark months in Britain. ‘Sleepmoss’ challenges us to rethink our perceptions of the “pastoral” and to look at nature afresh with new eyes. For not only are the landscapes around us an escape: much more lies there, it's this turbulence we need to find peace with, and Sleepmoss grapples with the physicality of the landscape in a fresh and intuitive way. Rix-Martin notes “Musically, we have never truly embraced rugged landscapes in their full glory and I felt this when I thought about the many different composers over the centuries, their work seemed uptight and far too human in scale. For instance Vaughan Williams had unquestionably beautiful moments in The Lark Ascending, but it's too clean, too controlled. I wanted to channel a take on classical music that was hyper-real, focusing on letting the elements speak to us, not the other way around.” A visual influence is J.M.W. Turner - “his work with changing light and storms that are raw and expressive.” and the abstract way in which Turner boldly revealed both horror and beauty (some would say “reality”) is reflected in the sonic approach throughout Sleepmoss. The album’s timeline starts out with summer's end, and the feeling of the air changing. Within this timeline, Rix-Martin describes the drama of her songs as visual stories. “The sounds around us are totally different depending on the season, I always assumed it was to do with the change in water vapour and heat in the air. Summer is much too high pitched and spiky.” To pull out a couple of our favourites, the songs 'Night Rain' and 'Murmur' are “the story of predator and prey, death and life, one fortifying the other while a storm rumbles. The next morning the woods are clear birds sing in the breeze from the night’s storm.” ‘Sleepmoss’ captures not only a unique perspective on nature but like nature itself, reflects the shifting times we live in. As Rix-Martin points out, Nature is often seen as “something to be controlled, neatened, conquered.” Sleepmoss interprets and admires nature in all its glory.

THE HOLIDAY SOUNDS OF JOSH ROUSE WORLDWIDE RELEASE DATE (CD/LP): 11/01/19 Josh Rouse never planned on making a holiday record. “I was never a holiday record kind of guy,” he laughs. “Growing up, I remember hearing Vince Guaraldi and Bing Crosby and all the staples everybody listens to each winter, but I never collected Christmas music or anything like that.” It makes sense, then, that ‘The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse’ isn’t your typical yuletide collection. Written off-and-on over the course of the last ten years, the record is joyful and festive of course, but, much like the holiday season itself, it’s also laced with an undercurrent of longing and melancholy. For every playful portrait of giddy lovers on New Year’s Eve, there’s a stranded traveler spending Christmas alone; for every slick St. Nick in a suit and sunglasses there’s a lonely ex-pat waiting by the mailbox for cards that never seem to come. The arrangements are eclectic and intoxicating, drawing equal influence from Rouse’s Midwestern childhood and his decade-and-a-half spent living in Spain, and the performances here are sparkling and fizzy to match, blending jazz sophistication with rootsy sincerity and sly crooner charm. The result is a holiday record built for the long haul, a wholesome, whip smart collection that’s guaranteed to stay with you well after the snow has melted and all the decorations have come down. “I decided that if I was going to make a holiday record, I didn’t want to load it up with sleigh bells and choirs and sing the same old standards that everybody else has already sung,” says Rouse. “I wanted to write something that folks hadn’t heard before, something they could listen to year-round.” “It was Nick (Lowe) that opened my eyes to how great holiday records could actually be,” says Rouse. “He showed me that you don’t have to be sappy or sentimental with it, that you can be yourself and put your own stamp on the tradition.” Rouse had already begun experimenting with his own holiday songs, writing a Christmas-themed tune or two every December just for the fun of it, but he’d never really considered recording or releasing them. Sometimes he’d perform the tracks live around the holidays; sometimes he’d sing them to get a laugh from his kids; sometimes he’d save them as voice memos on his phone and forget that they even existed. By the fall of 2018, though, Rouse realized he’d written more than enough material for a record, and, inspired by Lowe, he headed into Nashville’s Alex The Great studio for a four-day whirlwind of a session produced by longtime friend and collaborator Joe Pisapia (Guster, Ben Folds Five). “We recorded everything, even my vocals, live in just a couple takes,” says Rouse, who cut the album with the same group of musicians that backed him on ‘1972.’ “I’d give the guys some hints and direction here and there, but we work so well together that very little needed to be said. I was smiling after every performance.” “I approached writing these songs like I was soundtracking a film,” Rouse explains. “I was trying to bring all these little holiday scenes around the world to life with humor and heart.”

Happy 25 years to Los Straitjackets! The legendary masked surf rockers first started recording in 1994, and to celebrate their quartercentury-long hot streak as America’s foremost instrumental guitar combo, Yep Roc will be reissuing their long-out-of-print first two albums! The Utterly Fantastic and Totally Unbelievable Sound of Los Straitjackets was released in 1995 and features some of Los Straitjackets most wellknown compositions, including “Fury!” and “Itchy Chicken.” ¡Viva! Los Straitjackets followed in 1996 and introduced us to “Pacifica” and “The Casbah,” both staples of Los Straitjackets’ spellbinding live show to this day. All Music upon ¡Viva!’s release would go on to say that “there is no better guitar-based instrumental rock album” that year.

If the saga of the Grateful Dead is a long strange trip, then Real Gone Music has definitely been along for part of the ride! First, we brought you the entire Dick’s Picks series of live concerts on CD, all 36 volumes of it, many of them never before available at retail. Then we began putting out the Road Trips series, none of which has ever been in stores before. But now, dear Deadheads, the time has come for us to take the next step in our evolution as a key source for rare Grateful Dead recordings. It’s time to cross…the vinyl frontier! And we are hoping you will cross it with us, because we have put our heart and soul into these 1500 hand-numbered, 180-gram, limited vinyl editions of our new 6-LP set, Grateful Dead: Dick’s Picks Vol. 34—Rochester, NY 11/5/77! That’s right…we are finally putting Dick’s Picks on vinyl, and, boy, have we picked the right one. How do we know? You told us! This was by far the best-selling volume on CD from our reissue campaign. And no wonder, it’s from that magical year of 1977, with fiery performances of “Big River,” “Jack Straw,” “Deal,” and “Eyes of the World” powered by a particularly lively Phil Lesh. But for many the highlight will be one of the truly great performances of “The Other One” in the Grateful Dead catalog, 12 minutes of surging intensity and building crescendos. This Pick also included highlights from a 11/2/77 Toronto show, including a great medley of “Estimated Prophet”/”St. Stephen”/”Truckin’”/”Around and Around” (we’ve reconfigured the track listing to put all the bonus tracks at the end of the set). Definitely a great place to begin our journey into the realm of Grateful Dead vinyl! Such a stellar performance deserves a great package with great sound. For this Real Gone release, we’ve enlisted David Glasser at Airshow Mastering to remaster the set from the original tapes for vinyl. David’s had a long association with the Dead; he mastered the soundtrack to last year’s Long Strange Trip documentary among many other projects. For lacquer cutting, we turned to John Golden at Golden Mastering. John has worked with artists as far-ranging as Jonathan Wilson, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, and Soundgarden among many others, and he is our go-to engineer for lacquer cutting. The test pressings were approved by David Glasser, the Grateful Dead’s resident curator David Lemieux, and Gordon Anderson from Real Gone. We’ve pressed the set up on 180-gram vinyl for maximum fidelity, too. And we even scrapped the first pressing because it wasn’t up to our quality standards. As for the packaging, we’ve placed all six LPs inside a hardshell box adorned with the original front cover and a custom back cover featuring a great shot of Jerry Garcia from the show. Inside, you’ll find a 4-page, LP-sized, fullcolor insert offering photos from the original package along with the original trippy graphics. And, as we mentioned before, each of these limited-edition sets is hand-numbered all the way up to 1500. This set will not be repressed once we run out of the 1500 limited edition copies. And we only have a little more than 400 copies left!

The son of legendary rock & roll pioneer Johnny Burnette, Rocky Burnette followed in his father’s musical footsteps, playing rowdy, highenergy rockabilly that dovetailed nicely with the early-’80s revival of the style. Born in Memphis in 1953, Burnette debuted in 1979 with the EMI America album Son of Rock’n’Roll (around the same time his cousin Billy began recording straight country for Columbia). The following summer, his single “Tired of Toein’ the Line” became a Top Ten smash, predating success stories by the likes of the Stray Cats; the song was also quite popular internationally, establishing an overseas fan base for Burnette that still endures today. However, EMI America’s financial difficulties scuttled promotion efforts for the follow-up singles (several of which became hits in other countries), and Burnette’s second album, Heart Stopper, got lost in the shuffle. In 1981, Burnette toured Europe with the final version of his late father’s Rock & Roll Trio; Burnette began to resurface in the mid-’90s, working with Rosie Flores and Dwight Twilley, and also contributing vocals and the original “Trouble Is I’m in Love With You” to ex-Trio guitarist Paul Burlison’s 1997 solo album Train Kept A-Rollin’. In 1996, Burnette finally issued another album, Tear It Up; unfortunately, the label, Core, went bankrupt almost immediately after its release. Undaunted, Burnette kept up his international tours, and supplied soulster Percy Sledge with a European hit with “You Got Away With Love” in 1997. ROCK SOLID marks the return of Rocky with Disc 1 featuring 16 new tracks including a remake of TIRED OF TOEIN’ THE LINE. Disc 2 features a classic concert from 1981.

UP is the duo of Nels Cline (the guitarist/composer best known for his work with Wilco) and Yuka C Honda (the composer/keyboardist/ programmer best known for her work with Cibo Matto). Combining aspects of electronica, folk, improvisation, and some heated rocking, this debut recording—perhaps predictably—defies easy categorization. But fear not! Contained within this package is a sometimes sweet, sometimes jarring, but always compelling excursion into what a shared sensibility sounds like, and after taking the journey that is ‘Spinning Creature’ it all feels just right as CUP’s music veers from the accessible to the abstract and back. ‘Spinning Creature’ was recorded in about three days in Brooklyn. In the last several years, Nels and Yuka had performed some of the songs included on this record, while always leaving room for improvisation in their sets as well. This recording was approached with those same parameters. Thus, one hears songs with lyrics and some semblance of song structure as well as pieces that were created spontaneously. A significant bonus factor in the recording process is that Yuka could take tracks to her home studio and give them the “Eucademix” treatment, meaning to sculpt details of the tracks, adding her often meticulous sound production while still honoring the live performance aspects. This balance is what CUP music is all about. Nels and Yuka (who are married, by the way) even sing a little here and there as they enter their singular sound world. And now you can enter it, too!

Lake Ruth was formed in 2015 by multi-instrumentalist Hewson Chen of The New Lines, drummer Matt Schulz (Holy Fuck, Enon, SAVAK) and vocalist Allison Brice (The Eighteenth Day of May, The Silver Abduction). Their expanded live line-up includes René Dennis (The New Lines), James Canty (The Make-Up, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists), and David Mason (Listening Center). Inspired by 1960's sonic experimentation, baroque psychedelia, library obscurities, vintage pop noir, Giallo soundtracks, kraut and jazz, Lake Ruth creates intriguing and unique music rich with multilayered instrumentation, propulsive rhythms and atmospheric vocals. Following up two excellent albums and several singles, "Extended Leave" is their latest music and perhaps the sharpest, most incisive example of their deep, thought-provoking pop yet. Mysterious and melodic, both sides of this double-A side single ably demonstrate why Lake Ruth are one of the most interesting bands out there today.

Formed in 2014 during a summer spent obsessing about Sarah Records, Michigan band Failed Flowers are a shadowy group, evoking elements of C86, indie, pop and shoegaze. The current line-up coalesced in 2015 around guitarist/singers Anna Burch and Fred Thomas, bassist Erin Davis and drummer Miles Haney. This 7" is the fruit of Failed Flowers' most recent sessions and represent some of their most evolved work. "Faces" is the first song Anna brought to the band, a wash of guitars and vocal harmonies that are somehow both quick and casual. More melodic than most of the band's recorded output, it walks in the same catchy territory as Anna's always-glowing solo work, though swimming through more waves of distortion. "Broken Screen" was described as "The Strokes in a bar fight" seconds after the lead vocals were put to tape, and the song zips along nervously with just that energy.
