The idea and creation of this record label was led out by a demo recording of Daniel Norgren. It was recorded in the woodlands of Sweden by Pelle Nyhage in his home studio in 2002 who later founded Superpuma Records. After the success of 2011’s Past Life Martyred Saints and 2014’s prophetic The Future’s Void, EMA returns with a portrait of The Outer Ring: A pitch-black world of highways at night, American flags hung over basement windows, jails and revival meetings, casinos and rage. In a year dominated by white working-class alienation and anger, EMA – a Midwesterner who never lost her thousand-yard stare - has delivered an album that renders Middle American poverty and resentment with frightening realism and empathy. Co-produced with Jacob Portrait (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), this is a return to EMA’s roots in the noise-folk outfit Gowns, whose 2007 album Red State prefigured many of Exile’s core themes, along with its mix of stripped-back folk and EMA’s signature noise epics. The album is unique in its mingling of gender politics with American working-class anxiety. The voices we hear in these songs — druggy, surly societal outcasts; Byronic nihilists bringing down fire — speak to a kind of rebellion that’s typically reserved for men, and the archetype of the “dirtbag teenage boy” dominates the album. Yet EMA claims some of that same dirtbag alienation for women — “a woman who swallowed a scumbag teen boy whole,” as EMA puts it – and uses it to interrogate both her own vulnerability and how male violence shapes the world, as on the anthemic “Aryan Nation.” The result is a deeply personal, confrontational, but ultimately redemptive album from a quintessentially American artist at the peak of her form. ----------------

Perhaps Nick Lowe’s most varied release, Pinker and Prouder Than Previous was recorded in Austin, TX, the famed Rockfield Studios in Wales, and in London. Tapping everyone from his current associates Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack and Martin Belmont to the Fabulous Thunderbirds and The Men They Couldn’t Hang to back him up, this mix of originals and covers actually predicts the stripped down style that revived his career a few years later. For Party of One, the personnel were drawn from Nick’s bandmates on 1987’s John Hiatt masterpiece, Bring the Family (Lowe on bass, Jim Keltner on drums and Ry Cooder on guitar) combined with the twin heads of the band The Moonlighters (Austin DeLone-- ex of Eggs Over Easy and Bill Kirchen-- Original Lost Planet Airman and twang kingpin). Nick brought in Dave Edmunds to produce and play even more guitar. They rip through a fantastic batch of original songs highlighted by “All Men Are Liars” and “What’s Shakin’ on the Hill” which are still staples of Nick’s live show. This strong effort led into the Little Village project and can be considered the final chapter in the first half of Nick’s career. Pinker and Prouder Than Previous and Party of One are the final pair of Nick Lowe catalogue reissues being released by Yep Roc in 2017. The previous reissues, Nick the Knife, The Abominable Showman, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit, and Rose Of England are all available now. These releases have been out of print for decades and show the period between Nick’s persona as an ironic rock ‘n’ roller and the worldly balladeer we see him as today. With tracks ranging from roots rock and reggae to the pub rock he helped popularize, these releases are worthy of a second listen.

The eighth album from Buffalo Killers, ‘Alive and Well in Ohio,’ was recorded at their Howler Hills Farm analog studio on their own terms. Equipped with only the knowledge they had gained over the years, the band crafted this album without rules or pressure. Created and produced by songwriting brothers Zachary and Andrew Gabbard, the warm, consciously imperfect, and raw sound finds its inspiration in seasons of change, life, longing, love, and family. Street Date: 10/20/2017 COUNT122 | COUNT122O | COUNTCD122 San Francisco-based producer Giraffage (Charlie Yin), whose dreamy synth-pop productions have appointed him as one of electronic music’s most refreshing and innovative producers among the landscape, takes a sonic leap forward with his forthcoming record Too Real, out this October on Counter Records. “I didn’t have any high hopes for the Giraffage project,” he recalls of his early days diving into music full time. Like many American kids born to immigrants, his parents disapproved of a career in music and hoped he would pursue a more auspicious path in law or medicine. “They told me I could give it a year after graduation and if nothing came of it then I needed to reassess my plans.” Lucky for Yin, his success raced ahead at lightspeed following his 2013 Needs mixtape, a release that showcased his versatility as a producer and “omnivorous music lover,” as noted by Pitchfork. It wasn’t until his world tour supporting Porter Robinson-- an experience he considers one of the most pivotal points in his career-- that he was able to see the panorama of his rapidly growing fan base. He continued touring with names like Phantogram, Flume, XXYYXX, and dropped his No Reason EP with Fool’s Gold in 2014-- his first release that featured all sample-free productions. For the last year and a half, Giraffage has continued to tour and play major international festivals while writing his forthcoming LP Too Real. The album, which takes sonic and stylistic cues from such groundbreaking acts as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Haruomi Hosono, Soichi Terada, Interpol, and Radiohead, “is a return to my musical interests and roots,” he explains. Indeed, Too Real, sounds like just that-- an authentic return to the music he’s believed in from the start. Tracy Bonham’s major label debut, The Burdens of Being Upright (Island), achieved gold record status in 1996, spawning the chart topping hit single Mother Mother on Alternative Rock Radio. This lead to a pair of Grammy™ nominations, and an MTV Video Award nomination. Soon after her world tour had ended promising this album, the music business shifted and changed, and Bonham was told to retreat to write and rewrite her subsequent album. By the time her second album was released in 2000, her record label, Island Records (turned Island-Def Jam) was mostly unrecognizable. She released the arty and angry Down Here to critical acclaim but it did not enjoy commercial success. In 2003, after moving to Los Angeles, Bonham became the featured vocalist / violinist on Blue Man Group’s The Complex Tour and How To Be A Megastar 2.0 (2006). In 2005 Bonham released her third album Blink The Brightest (Rounder/ Zoé). This was her most commercial sounding album and several of the songs were featured in TV shows and movies such as The L Word, Weeds, and Sexting In Suburbia. In 2010, after moving back to Brooklyn and marrying Rollingstone editor Jason Fine, Bonham released Masts of Manhatta. This album won accolades from major publications and landed her second appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and The Late Late Show With Craig Furgussen. In 2015, Bonham released her fifth album entitled Wax & Gold with the help of Pledge Music and her fans. Wax & Gold was very well received by the public and the press. The album showed a maturity in song writing, as well as an evolved vocal style, that makes Bonham stand out as a serious artist with a unique talent. Bonham is an artist who continues to create and grow no matter what obstacles are in her path.

On her new album A flame my love, a frequency, she introduces the most drastic change to her music since she began singing on her fourth album, setting aside the viola da gamba she is known for in exchange for all electronic instrumentation - Moog pedals and Critter and Guitari synthesizers. Words used to describe her muse Arthur Russell are equally applicable to Colleen. Schott’s compositions can be in turn pop or experimental, vocal or instrumental, and acoustic or electronic. She has drawn on the baroque sounds of a classical instrument using the most modern pedals and looping techniques. Shape shifting as she does, the pieces are always distinctly her strong and utterly unique musical voice. A constant across Colleen’s albums are delicate extended melodies, minutely detailed soundscapes, and explorative unbounded compositions. Colleen’s work is a direct result of her core belief that in order to keep growing as an artist, you need to continue to be willing to experiment and to embrace drastic changes. The music of A flame my love, a frequency is the closest Colleen has come to a concept album, a reflection upon one year in her life that began in the Autumn of 2015. The album‘s central theme is the inescapable fact that life and death always walk hand in hand. Schott is an avid bird watcher and her home and studio on the coast of Spain allow for frequent trips out into the wilds. As any naturalist knows, extreme beauty and vitality go hand in hand with brutality. This symbiosis was made more personal when, on the way back from visiting a very ill relative in France, she decided to spend the night in her former home of Paris in order to take her viola bow for repair at a luthier in the Republique area. It was late afternoon and she remembers the beauty of Paris and people sitting and enjoying the cafés. That was November 13th and a mere 4 hours later these very same cafés were the scene of utter terror and death. A few weeks after the events, Colleen started composing the songs that make up the album. She recorded each song live with minimal edits and vocals were recorded without overdubs, creating a symbiosis between the machine and the performer that mirrors the album’s core concept. The personal narrative of the year in question yields a more vulnerable sound than any previous recordings by Colleen. “Separating” is an emotional response to being overwhelmed by the inevitability of death. Feelings of fear are never far from feelings of joy as they are in “Winter dawn” with its propulsive thump and ominous lyrics “I came home with a fistful of fear,” that manage to shift towards hope with “Love alone is your home.” Joy and hope are strongly present throughout the album, the catalyst that lifts us out of the darkness as inevitably as night to day. We are shown the wonderment of “Another world,” and through the metaphors of light, shown joy as in the title track. A flame my love, a frequency is an album that finds optimism in the face of tribulation, a meditation on humanity’s ability to prevail. It is a beautiful, complex album by a singular and remarkable musician.

Drag City presents the second volume of Bill MacKay and Ryley Walker’s inspired collaboration. It’s been nearly two years since their much-admired 2015 debut, Land of Plenty (Whistler Records), and SpiderBeetleBee more than makes up for lost time with rich, resonant performances that elevate the sound of the guitar duo as they work with an ever-widening panorama of styles. Their first album was developed over a month-long live residency at Chicago bar The Whistler, and reflected MacKay and Walker’s shared joy in a new relationship with a kindred spirit, in playing that might wordlessly finish a phrase or suggest a direction, as they spoke through their guitars. SpiderBeetleBee continues fluidly down the path of their initial psych-folkblues-raga tandem, brewing further explorations in mixed-and-matched
idioms, turning composed melodies inside-out via improvisation, and finding in the blend a shared Walker/MacKay pasture, serendipitously found somewhere between Appalachia and the Highlands. SpiderBeetleBee radiates forth with equal parts austerity and whimsy, opening with an almost-baroque dance before giving way to a Celtic theme, both featuring MacKay and Walker’s acoustics in rambling conversation, picking through intricate passages as though they were exchanges, thoughts and afterthoughts. The second of these, “Pretty Weeds Revisited” is enhanced by sonorous statements from Dutch cellist Katinka Kleijn (a veteran of the CSO), showing a deep, instinctive feel for the Walker/MacKay sound. The album then takes an unexpected turn at midpoint, slowly melting down and

drifting soulfully through the expansive space of “Naturita.” Side two picks up the tempo on “I Heard Them Singing,” with the aid of MacKay’s requinto (a kind of 5-string Mexican guitar), Walker’s rolling chords and the percolating tabla of Ryan Jewell, suggesting a hitherto unknown short-cut from Brazil to India. Drafts of slide guitar and bittersweet blues evocation illumine further fruitful travels before “Dragonfly”, also featuring Ms. Kleijn’s haunting cello, closes the cycle with a flourish. Adorned with Bill MacKay’s colorful and wilfully primitive cover-art, SpiderBeetleBee wanders through styles, landmasses and hemispheres, capturing the further adventures of MacKay and Walker with spellbinding snapshots that only bloom larger the longer you take them in.

Another time, indeed! It’s been fifty years since Pearls Before Swine first appeared. A genteel, oft-hushed missive from a far corner of the psychedelic hive mind, One Nation Underground was released on an independent outlier of a record label, removed from the mainstream — and still its spirit came to be widely appreciated by a generation and more. Today, this music has been reissued by labels around the world dozens of times. Tragic, then, that it hasn’t been heard properly in decades! The stereo record that made it to compact disc in the 90s (and to subsequent vinyl pressings) was a botched job, with reverbs added to evoke a fake stereo image, and an overdub track from the original master lost in the transfer — providing a perfect analog for a release destined not to make the original artists any money at all. The 50th Anniversary edition, however, has been returned to the hands of its creators, restoring the original mono mix that made such an impact in 1967, freed from the muffling veils that time eventually wrapped around it. Cast into a moment of incredible tumult and great discovery, Pearls Before Swine contributed a uniquely earthy strain to the arc of sound that defined the time and place
of the later 1960s. A group of young men in Florida were inspired to send their demo tape to the label that released The Fugs, whose appearance and lawless attitude seemed at once a dare and an invitation. The label was ESP-Disk, whose catalog was largely comprised of records from some of the farthest-out jazz players in New York City — but Pearls Before Swine were welcome to make a record there, too. Relocating to New York in the spring of 1967, they were installed at Impact Sound with provisional ESP-house man Richard Alderson (engineer of many of those jazz sessions, as well as sound-man on Dylan’s ’66 world tour) and, in three days, laid down the album. When it was released in October of that year, it immediately began to catch on with young people around the world with its blend of gentle and innocent, erudite and outraged. Each song was from a different genre and each track had something strange/mysterious in it, via exotic instruments, electronic oscillation or pure, simple intent. There was proto-punk in the mix, rife with humor, aloft with the pastoral acoustics of the banjo; music of the people of the world, all in the service of Tom Rapp’s visceral, unblinking lyrics. For music like this, radio play wasn’t dic-
tated by pluggers pushing a single up the charts — the jockeys at free-form stations played it because it spoke to them, and they loved it. One Nation Underground indeed! This was THE cult album of its time, loved by artists as divergent as Leonard Cohen and Iggy Pop. Fassbinder’s 1969 film Rio Das Mortes used two songs in its soundtrack and featured the album cover on one of its character’s walls. Two hundred thousand copies were pressed over the next couple years, and by 1969, Pearls Before Swine were an underground legend, recording their third album for a major label. The mysterious glow around their first two ESP-Disk releases has never faded, even in the past several decades, when the albums’ sound was undermined by technology. Original producer Richard Alderson oversaw the restoration and remastering of the tapes, allowing us to hear with jolting clarity the original monophonic intent of Pearls Before Swine. Notes from Richard and PBS leader Tom Rapp lend historical perspective, and Tom adds his reflections on each of the songs as well. Listen again — and hear for the first time, perhaps — the sound of One Nation Underground.

Now, the Michigan-made music machine is set to lay claim to a new parcel of mountainous terrain, in the form of their latest release on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, entitled “Matterhorn.” It’s a relentless pace, made all the more impressive not by the infrequency with which its met by Heaters peers, but rather by the lasting quality of each release. In this way, “Matterhorn” is more of the same—thirty-eight minutes of propulsive, precisely sculpted sonic signatures. In other crucial ways, however, “Matterhorn” represents massive change for Heaters: first, in the form of a largely revamped line-up, and second, in the form of an album whose wave crests above even the band’s previous high-water marks of consistency.

Short of attending group therapy together, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what contributions these new sparks have contributed to Heaters overall sound, just as it’s impossible to dismiss how utterly ignited by change “Matterhorn” sounds as a result. If “Baptistina” showed a picture of a band attaining greater control over their quite-rideable waves of reverb and rhythm, “Matterhorn” is the master-class in its execution. It’s a full-screen image of dawn, dusk and darkness, never scanned-and-panned, and never less than mesmerizing. At the risk of putting too fine a point on it, the landlocked levitation previously made possible via Heaters psychosurf majesty is luminously leavened on “Matterhorn,” with the bright light of the jingle-jangle morning (which may or may not come following you—but will likely lead to repeat listens).

“Black Bolt” and “Bronze Behavior” offer a one-two punch, revealing that these changes may have been hiding in plain sight the entire time. It sounds like Heaters – the pace is pushed, the ride-cymbal is ridden, and the guitar lines shimmer and sway with a kind of effortless bliss and ease. Still, there’s something instantly different in the tone and tenor, as if some sand and seafoam has been dislodged from the band’s collective ears. By the hypnotic, ending coda of “Bronze Behavior,” it’s clear Heaters are going for the gold, the guitars ringing ruefully like an unearthed, semi-water-logged Wedding Present deep cut, or perhaps an answer to the unasked musical question, “Does Johnny Marr surf?”

The album’s eight songs pair together almost congenitally, “Kingsday” and “Hochelaga” going hand-in-hand, followed by “Pearls” and “Séance,” two duos with almost symmetrical sheen. But the album highlight may be its majestic album-opening power-pairing of “Thanksgiving I” and Thanksgiving II.” It’s the sound of Heaters fully illuminated, with broad and bold slashes of echo effectively energizing the proceedings to provide a panoramic view that confirms “Matterhorn” sees the band reaching previously unclimbed heights.

UNFILTERED UNIVERSE Completing a trilogy of albums whose compositions are infused with the various, colorful strands of traditional music from his Pakistani/Indian homeland, New York guitarist Rez Abbasi’s Unfiltered Universe presents the line-up of pianist Vijay Iyer, alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and drummer Dan Weiss, plus guest appearances from renowned classical cellist Elizabeth Mikhael. Previous releases Things to Come and Suno Suno focused, respectively, on Hindustani and Qawwali music, whereas this collection of seven new numbers explores and embraces the more rhythmically exuberant, South Asian elements of Carnatic instrumental music. Originally hailing from Karachi – and creating fresh, contemporary sounds here with players who themselves are all well-versed in north and south Indian music – Abbasi sees his subconscious responses as an equally important source of inspiration alongside the imprint of his treasured, cultural heritage. “I have an intuitive way of approaching composition – an idea of searching but not searching, being conscious but not conscious. So with all of the influences I’ve absorbed (including Indian music, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Jim Hall, Keith Jarrett, Led Zeppelin), why would I want a tunnel-vision thing happening when I can have this ‘unfiltered universe’? I’ve had the good fortune to play alongside some great Carnatic musicians – a lot of jazz players don’t get to do that. But instead of interjecting specific Carnatic ideas, I use their energy as a foundation.

“Earlier albums featured the distinctive sounds of, for example, tabla and sitar – but on this recording, there’s no Indian instrument at all, so it’s an experiment in camouflaging that exoticism. There’s certainly a rhythmic and improvisational empathy between Indian music and jazz; but here, what you’re hearing is what you’re not used to hearing” – something which Abbasi defines more acutely as ‘creative music with a jazz weighting’ rather than the quite different concepts of ‘Indian jazz’ or ‘Indojazz’. Abbasi’s complex meters are often based on underlying, architectural structures of expansion and compression which, in propulsive, shifting ‘Thin-king’, give rise to its beautifully searching melody; and enigmatic, tumbling ‘Turn of Events’ finds an exciting, flowing synergy between cello, guitar and sax. Carefully-crafted ‘Propensity’ features a bassline which moves by an eighth note, almost undetected, through multi-timesignatured sections: “There are five-and-a-half beats there, six beats here, like the idea of someone breathing or walking irregularly”. Rock-grooving ‘Disagree to Agree’ is an angular, stoic reflection on prevalent political turmoil; and the contrasting joyousness of ‘Dance Number’ has its roots in Abbasi’s and Mahanthappa’s intense sessions working with a Carnatic dance company, the guitarist’s writing echoing the vitality of their steps and rhythms. Rez Abbasi concludes: “With Unfiltered Universe, I’d like to trigger an emotional response which, perhaps, could change something subconsciously. If my music can impact listeners on that level, I feel I’ve succeeded. But my essential musical message is that jazz can also be this – it can be creative without being totally improvised and moving without being stylized. I hope listeners will live this record”.

ABOUT “THE DEAL”: The seed of SUMAC was planted somewhere around the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011, sown upon the smoldering ashes of guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner’s former band ISIS. Turner had seen his prior project reach full fruition over the span of thirteen years, and it had reached the end of its lifecycle. ISIS had come to define an entire genre of architecturally meticulous and sonically nuanced metal, but at some point all the corners had been mapped, all the fortifications constructed. There was nothing left to build. Turner continued his musical path contributing to the deconstructed panoramic soundscapes of Mamiffer, the misanthropic crowd-baiting sludge of Old Man Gloom, the exploratory electrical whirr of House Of Low Culture, and a slew of studio projects running the gamut from slow-crawling minimalist pop (Jodis), to fiery d-beat punk (Split Cranium). In the midst of all these endeavors however, Turner tended to another venture, one that germinated slowly, its DNA already charted but its flesh still to develop. SUMAC finally began to bloom in 2012 when Turner caught a set by Vancouver’s raging crust band Baptists. Drummer Nick Yacyshyn stormed through the songs, supplementing the band’s blitzkrieg energy with dexterous idiosyncratic fills and modulating drum patterns. Turner realized the rhythmic underpinning had been found, and shortly thereafter made contact with Yacyshyn. With this duo now comprising the core of SUMAC, the band developed quickly. Their debut album sprouted from a set of carefully composed guitar demos, a string of intensive days holed up in the forests of Vashon Island for writing and rehearsals, and a quick recording session booked while the songs were still growing. Turner recruited Brian Cook (Russian Circles, These Arms Are Snakes, Botch) to fill in on bass duties, hammering out the low-end lurch and cementing the foundation to the songs. The Deal was born. With SUMAC, noting the members’ prior accomplishments isn’t an indirect excuse for The Deal’s existence; it’s a road map through the briar of their jagged labyrinthine compositions. Across the span of the album’s six songs, SUMAC takes multiple turns through unexpected territories: textural hums, math-metal, harsh noise, Caspar Brötzmann-inspired free-jazz. But all roads lead to a destination that epitomizes the members’ passionate dedication to heavy multi-deminsional music—bludgeoning riffs, tension-building structures, disorienting seismic shifts in tone, timbre, and tempo. If there was a simple way to summarize The Deal, it’s that it’s an incredibly smart and emotionally sophisticated record, which may initially appear as a single minded brutish assault. Singer/guitarist Dexter Romweber and drummer Chris “Crow” Smith were still teenagers when they formed Flat Duo Jets in Chapel Hill in 1984. Inspired in equal measure by the Cramps’ haunted rockabilly and vintage drive-in horror movies, they cooked up a metallic version of rockabilly that sounded as if it had been launched into the deepest quadrants of the astral plane. “I had this place behind my mother’s house, The Mausoleum, and that’s where we formed the Jets,” says Romweber. “It was this campy ’40s horror kind of place. Gothic, but not English neo-gothic – more like the ‘Addams Family’ – and that’s what we tried to make Flat Duo Jets.”

The combination of Romweber’s wild-eyed rockabilly howl, madman surf guitar and Crow’s pulverizing runaway-train drums made for a stage show that blew minds all over the college-radio circuit. The Jets spent just enough time in R.E.M.’s hometown to appear in and steal the 1987 documentary Athens, GA: Inside/Out before they expanded to a trio lineup and connected with producer Mark Bingham to record Flat Duo Jets, an album that still sounds just as powerful today. “No overdubs, no nothin’, just straight to tape like it was 1957,” Bingham says of the recording sessions. “So we had to do it right the first time. It was very seat-of-the-pants, which seemed fine with what the Jets were doing.” CD One of Wild Wild Love has all 14 Flat Duo Jets tracks, including “Wild Wild Love,” which they played in a career-making 1990 performance on Late Night With David Letterman; plus all six tracks from the 1984 cassette-only mini-album (In Stereo). “About 1,500 of the cassettes were spun up at a manufacturing facility in Burlington, one whose usual output was gospel recordings and self-help narratives,” says (In Stereo) producer Josh Grier. “This really was the definitive home-grown product.” CD Two adds a baker’s-dozen outtakes from the sessions. Introducing Icelandic composer and singer Högni, better known as the front man of indie rock band Hjaltalín and previous member of electronic group GusGus, as the newest addition to Erased Tapes with his solo debut album Two Trains – available worldwide on October 20th 2017. Amidst destruction on the mainland, the two locomotives Minør and Pionér transported wagons full of rock and gravel to the Icelandic seaside during the construction of the Reykjavík harbour in 1913-1917. The two metallic giants ushered in a new age in Iceland. However, soon after construction ceased the two trains were parked and have never driven since. Now they only serve to remind us of the grandeur of a bygone future. They are the only trains ever to have graced the Icelandic landscape. The music in Two Trains embraces the spirit of the original European avant-garde and invokes these concepts in its chugging rhythms, metallic clangs and brooding choral arrangements (men's choruses are a distinctly Icelandic phenomena related to the national/romantic politics of the 19th and 20th century) while the lyrics speak of ominous clouds on the war-ridden eastern horizon and freight cars filled with gravel and dreams. Words from Högni, July 2017: “The music on Two Trains is a blue-print of a period in my life where I collided with my own self, and at that point I felt the indifference between the personal and the universal, the absolute consciousness of life’s unconsciousness. Perhaps it’s a feeling that cannot be conveyed, like watercolours that just seem to wash off into the sea. But also a flashing mirage that you can enjoy before you arrive at your last destination." As time went on, the two trains also began to bear a psychological implication to Högni and came to represent the different incarnations of his persona during a difficult period in his life. As a society we are also quite often faced with a fork in the road and a decision to make, and most importantly the acceptance of one’s self. Today, the real Minør and Pionér are unemployed, mere relics. Minør is on display near the Reykjavík waterfront and Pionér is parked in an outdoor museum on a hill. But for Högni, with this release, the two trains have ushered in a new chapter in his own life. The cover art incorporates a distorted portrait photograph taken by Anna Maggy with the help of Sigurður Oddsson’s art direction, using projected features to reflect the idea of duality.

Richard Lloyd is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, best known as a founding member of the rock band Television. After Television first disbanded in 1978, Lloyd released one album for Elektra Records called Alchemy. During his solo career, as a guitarist and session musician he has worked with various artists in the music industry, including Matthew Sweet, John Doe (of X), and Stephan Eicher. He acted as producer and recording engineer as well as a member of the band Rocket From The Tombs, entitled Rocket Redux, which was released on Smog Veil Records. He has now released six solo albums. Alchemy in 1979, Field of Fire in 1986 (re-released in 2007 with an additional disc of music), his live disc Real Time in 1987 (recorded at CBGB) and The Cover Doesn't Matter in 2001. The Radiant Monkey was originally released on Parasol Records in late 2007. The CD features Lloyd playing everything but the drums (manned by session drummer Chris Purdy and, on one track, Television's Billy Ficca). Here both titles are being reissued on Richard's own Sufimonkey Records along with the rest of his solo catalog coming out in late 2017 and early 2018. In addition, Richard has published his first memoir entitled "Everything Is Combustible" (Beech Hill Publishing) which will be released on conjunction with the catalog reissues and his 66th birthday in October 2017.

“Mnestic Pressure” is Lee Gamble’s first album since 2014 and his first with Hyperdub, a reset that sees a noticeable change in his sound and the concepts that feed into his music. Lee says ‘From “Diversions 1994-1996” (2012) through to “Koch” (2014) - my music felt like I was dealing with signals from elsewhere signals from the unconscious, sub-aqua, hallucinated, dreamt. “Mnestic Pressure” feels like their decoded offspring, a terra interpretation.’ The title “Mnestic Pressure” comes from Lee’s thinking about how our contemporary memory is pressured, individually, but also collectively. ‘We live in these strobing, visual times, like a constant subliminal advertisement but, also over the last few years the world seems to have become more and more dreamlike, alien, and parodic itself and there was this part of me that wanted to drag my music back from this Shangri-La, but fully drenched and infected by its ghosts.’ “Mnestic Pressure” as a whole is a simulation of this experience; a flow of targeted information, through contrasting and quickly changing terrain, from one track to another you’re dragged into a new space. The pressure to move is intrinsic to the flow of the album, one thing morphologically transforms into another, zooming in and out from wide angle to detail, reshaping into new forms at a speed Lee’s music hasn’t before. The music on “Mnestic Pressure” has a hardness, with a structure and melody that was sublimated in Lee’s previous LPs. It builds on his more recent experiments with more functional dancefloor forms. Here his hypermodern production and crunchy, dissembled beats feel like they could be malfunctioning holograms projected onto the hallucinated memories of his early work.

FISTFIGHT AT THE BARNDANCE In his most ambitious artistic undertaking yet, respected British flautist, composer and educator Gareth Lockrane brings his debut big band project to Whirlwind to interpret eleven original works on an exciting, cinematic scale in Fistfight at the Barndance. Known for his considerable work with smaller ensembles such as Grooveyard (with saxophonist Alex Garnett), as well as being a familiar sideman on the UK scene, here Lockrane distils all of his experience into leading a 20-piece which sparkles with ebullient expression.. Ellington, Basie and Mingus, as well as saxophone/flute doublers such as Frank Wess and Eric Dolphy, formed the basis of Gareth Lockrane’s early-career interest in this larger format, leading to arrangements for the Royal Academy of Music and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra; and it was his degree in film composition, working with varied, expansive movie narratives, which heightened the ambition to paint on a broader canvas. He describes the rich diversity of the assembled musicians: “There are contemporaries of mine from college, including Steve Fishwick, Henry Collins, Sammy Mayne and Mike Outram; some of the players, such as Ian Thomas and Mark Nightingale, were pillars of the scene when I originally moved down to London; and then there are the younger musicians I taught at the RAM – for example, Tom Walsh, James Gardiner-Bateman and Nadim Teimoori. So I feel a great connection with this extraordinary bunch of guys from across the generations; and with so many fine soloists amongst them, it’s satisfying to provide each with the opportunity to shine”.

The album title is a tribute to Lockrane’s late father, whose 6/8 blues harp riff of the same name (in which he jocularly envisaged the implosion of a convivial barndance) is the basis for the call-and-response between flute and brass at the centre of the title track’s bustling maelstrom. Pianist and organist Ross Stanley’s commanding soul-jazz Hammond grooves are often at the heart of the leader’s creations (influenced by the likes of John Scofield, Eddie Harrris and Behki Mseleku), including high-energy ‘Stutterfunk’ with Ryan Trebilcock’s pulsating electric bass inspiring sassy horn licks and effervescent flute and sax improv, and country-blues rock-out ‘Roots’. Each tune on the album has its own history, the big attraction for Lockrane being the weaving together of all kinds of influences – gospel, funk, straight-ahead jazz, soundtrack – as well as the challenge of harnessing and pacing the potential power of a big band: “It’s about sustaining a mood and arranging the sounds so that every moment counts, while also allowing each section the opportunity to enjoy the freedom. And my own role is intentionally quite loose, playing off the band or ducking around inside the arrangements as a middle-man between the rhythm section and the horns”. As an instrumentalist, Gareth Lockrane is a proven master, here adding an orchestral sheen which evokes classic movie scores of the 1960s and ‘70s, especially when using contrabass and subcontrabass flutes – so ballads such as ‘We’ll Never Meet Again’ and ‘Forever Now’ might easily conjure the evocative sound worlds of Bernard Herrmann or Henry Mancini as his deep, breathy sonorities blend imaginatively with the band’s lush, textural harmonies. Sizzling reinterpretations of earlier compositions are juxtaposed with a clutch of new tunes. ‘Do It’ possesses an edgy, nightlife swagger; blithe, streetwalking ‘On the Fly’ and ‘Mel’s Spell’ (after Mel Lewis, a distinct inspiration after seeing him in the Village Vanguard band, NYC) superbly showcase Lockrane’s flighty, higher register against his sumptuous arrangements; and exhilarating boogie ‘One for Junia’ increasingly ramps up the fervor. Recorded in London across a single day – and mastered in New York by the esteemed Tyler McDiarmid – it’s a strong, confident statement by an amazing collective, also recounted by Gareth Lockrane as a warm, rewarding experience: “We’ve done so many great gigs, it’s great to now definitively document our achievements. I always wanted to do a strong studio big band album that was loose enough for the solos to be fresh while doing justice to the tunes (and with the right people playing them). It’s been hugely enjoyable to put together”.

HYBRID An energized and impassioned studio session from New York-based Slovenian saxophonist Jure Pukl, Croatian pianist Matija Dedić and their quartet with bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Johnathan Blake brings new release, Hybrid, to the Whirlwind label. Pukl’s prolific ascendancy of the international jazz scene has resulted in numerous solo and sideman recordings recognised in 2015 by the attainment of Slovenia’s highest national arts award.His collaborations include names such as Branford Marsalis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Dave Liebman and Vijay Iyer; and like-minded colleague Matija Dedić’s varied career has seen him perform with artists including Larry Grenadier, John Hollenbeck, Jeff Ballard and Kendrick Scott. Across a venturesome sixty-seven minutes of mostly original numbers, the individual compositions of both Pukl and Dedić stimulate a fiery, improvisational spirit throughout the quartet, their respect for tradition translating into a spontaneous, contemporary context which also embraces elements of free jazz. Pukl relates the story that, as a funk-loving youth in Slovenia, he asked his father to return from a business trip in Munich with Maceo Parker records, only to be mistakenly brought vinyls by (to him, at the time) the unknown and perplexing Charlie Parker. But after a week, the saxophonist fell in love with them, closely followed by the sounds of John Coltrane and Stan Getz/João Gilberto: “These are artists and recordings I still recognize as my inspiration”.

The immediacy of these live studio takes is palpable, from the sprawling fast swing of title track ‘Hybrid’ to journeying ‘Where Are You Coming From And Where Are You Going?’ (the latter being Pukl’s focus-pull on his development as a musician, ranging from its classically-suggested opening structure, through unconfined bass cadenza, to a spiky, irregularly-metred vamp). The repeated harmonic and Recorded at Samurai Hotel Recording Studios rhythmic figures of ‘Sequence II’ (dual tenors introducing guest saxophonist Melissa Aldana) and ‘Sequence III’ offer freedom of expression through distinctly NYC (May 2016) different atmospheres; and four-bar vamp ‘Spinning Thoughts’ entwines boisterous ideas from a single, elegant tenor motif.

Dedić’s ‘Hempburger’ and ‘Plan B’ highlight this quartet’s traditional influences with vigor, his own chordal piano foundation and rolling solos prominent throughout whilst featuring scintillating percussion from Johnathan Blake; and in a beautiful tune dedicated to Dedić’s late father, ‘Family’s obvious warmth is enhanced by Matt Brewer’s bass searching combined with ravishing tenor imaginings from Aldana. Initially quizzical ‘False Accusations’ eventually sparkles with boisterous positivity, Pukl’s tenor gliding across its choppy waters; and the late-hours first-take flow of Ornette Coleman’s ‘Lonely Woman’ simmers to misterioso piano and bass clarinet. “There’s a really good vibe and energy between the four of us, so we got into some special moments on this record”, recalls Pukl. “We all know each other well and feel connected; and also it’s challenging and fun to play alongside Melissa. I’ve always loved performing and, for me, this album reflects both my musical and personal worlds. SPORTS is a 4-5 piece basement rock band, started in 2012 at Kenyon College. or Atlanta outfit floral print, what began as a chance meeting on Facebook between drummer Paul DeMerritt and singer / guitarist Nathan Springer has evolved into an exciting, challenging and perpetually unpredictable collaboration. The pair begin performing in late 2014 and quickly honed their ingenuity for dizzying song structures and erratic rhythms rooted in pop sensibilities. The debut EP woo, recorded with bassist George Pettis (100 Watt Horse) and producer Graham Tavel, showcased floral print’s vibrant pastiche of psych-pop, early emo, ambient and deconstructionist rock.

ollowing woo, the duo (rounded out by a rotating cast of bassists) embarked on numerous tours throughout the East Coast and Midwest, making friends and tightening their uncanny sonic communication skills. In summer 2016, floral print once again linked up with Tavel to record its debut full-length, mirror stages, at Broad Street Visitor’s Center in Downtown Atlanta. These new songs display a marked change in tone from woo, as glimmers of noise, distorted melancholy, and manic energy imbued the band’s sound with more nuance and stylistic aberrations. floral print’s ability to defy genre convention sidesteps any feelings of forced technical showmanship as its mercurial sense of melody and rhythm is always couched in sincerity.

A co-release with Strut Records, the album is selected from records released between ‘68 and ‘78, upending clichéd ideas of Andean music and bringing to light the divergent, exciting traditions to have emerged from Peru’s strip of the iconic mountain range. Encompassing steady-grooving, Peruvian cumbia rhythms, transcendent folkloric harp recordings and Lima big band groups taking influence from their highland neighbours, it boasts a diversity that will appeal to fans of jazz and Latin as well as tropical-minded DJs and deepdigging collectors. It was dubstep producer and DJ Mala (Digital Mystikz) who most recently shone a light on the region with his 2016 album Mirrors on Brownswood - Tiger’s Milk founder Martin Morales had accompanied him to Peru two years earlier, acting as his guide and mentor in discovering the breadth of Peru’s musical history. Peruvian chef, restaurateur and music producer Martin was born in Peru and lived there until he was a teenager before settling in the UK. In recent years he has travelled frequently to the Andes in search of recipes, records, sounds and inspiration for a variety of projects which he and his London based team have presented. An avid DJ and record collector, Martin has teamed up with Tiger’s Milk co-founder Duncan Ballantyne (former Soundway label manager) and Peruvian crate digger Andres Tapia del Rio to create a series which starts with ANDINA and will then move to the Amazon and coast of Peru. Tiger’s Milk is dedicated to uncovering Peruvian music past and present and it has garnered support from the likes of Mr Scruff, Basement Jaxx, Mala, Gilles Peterson, Mr Jukes (Bombay Bicycle Club) and Osunlade. The launch of this compilation coincides with a cookbook release, also titled ANDINA. Palmbomen II Memories of Cindy Cindy is the eulogized muse behind Palmbomen II’s newest collection of limitless dance music. Appearing anecdotally in a cable access talk show and a four part 12” EP series episodically scored by Palmbomen II’s patent melodic house and remote, otherworldly fidelity, her story takes stage once more in Memories of Cindy. Kai Hugo, the artist behind Palmbomen II (and its sister project, the traditionally “live” band Palmbomen), is an idiosyncratic producer that relies on spontaneity as much as structure. Almost identical to the process that prompted Palmbomen II’s self-titled debut (Beats In Space, 2015), Hugo worked through several iterations of each MOC track in a single day before using a comprehensive end edit to create a piece with an immediate, impossible feel. On said self-titled album, Hugo applied vocals only to the video realizations of Palmbomen II’s songs. On MOC vocals appear as a primary component of and conduit to a stranger, haunted space. Whether contributing to the narrative as spoken word or morose melodies, it’s as disquieting as the echoed vaults from which they come that some other voice is now guiding Kai’s vessel. This voice and world is Cindy’s, the paradigm depicted in Hugo’s self-scripted and directed videos and films. Hugo’s visual practice provides a separate view of the Palmbomen II venture: a surreal, neo noir-ish California dislocated by the no-frills aesthetic of its music, and the tragicomedy of its imagined characters. The word “palmbomen” is in fact Dutch for palm trees. Hugo’s background fuels the expatriate’s fascination with California as an alternate universe of curious, convoluted culture and mutant music habitats. The airwaves of the world envisioned for Palmbomen II’s unfolding narrative are familiar, yet discordant, set apart from the gloss of the contemporary with an inquisitive view toward excavating a past that seems contrarily to have long been post-human, or perhaps not only human. The scenes and characters Kai creates in his musical and visual landscapes seem to transmit from another planet, though his own world is the more indistinguishable, alien impetus. Creating in isolation while contemplating these irregularly scheduled programs, it’s unsurprising that Kai would find solace and stability in Cindy. After her final respects are paid and very existence questioned, a new album of Palmbomen II music—pulsing with odd particularity and evoking a somber, surreal sound of a fifth-dimensional West Coast panorama—appears in her place. Palmbomen II’s Memories of Cindy is available October 20, 2017 on Beats In Space and collects the three EPs released on vinyl as a complete digital and CD release expanded to feature the fourth EP originally exclusive to the limited box set. Go Mirage is the 3rd full-length album from Chicago cinematic-rock trio To Destroy A City. This follow-up to 2014's post-rock paragon SUNLESS has an added immediacy due to the soaring nature of guitarist Michael Marshall's step toward the mic. Yes... There are vocals! Post-rock for the most part, has mainly utilized vocals as a texture or afterthought. Yet, To Destroy A City have adeptly included vocals into their cinematic tapestries with ease, and in the process added another layer of melody, modesty, and a surprising sense of hope to their already affecting guitar-driven compositions. There is an air of instant gratification with Go Mirage. It seems to push you forward to the next horizon, much as its title might suggest. Idealists might bark that To Destroy A City can't continue to fly the post-rock flag with such a vocalic album. The enlightened will find that the addition of vocals places the band as contemporaries to artists such as Caspian, Mogwai, and Album Leaf which have effectively used vocals as key components in their music.

ANTIBALAS AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA CHE CHE COLÉ MAKOSSA b/w CHE CHE COLÉ DAP - 1 1 0 5 A/B Originally released as a 12”, out-of-print for a decade, ANTIBALAS’ “Che Che Colé” has an impressive number of stamps on its passpor t. The song's origins are in Ghana, where "Kye Kye Kule" is a children's song that has since migrated all over the world--a version called "J.J. Koolaid" was collected in the late '80s. Eventually, it set up shop in the Bronx, where in 1972, Willie Colón rewrote it as "Che Che Colé" for his Boriquen salsa album Cosa Nuestra (with vocals by Héctor Lavoe). The Daptone-affiliated Brooklyn ensemble Antibalas covered Colón's version in 2004, in a style inspired by Fela’s Nigerian Afrobeat, and featuring a blazing vocal by MAYRA VEGA. The original B-side, now turned A-side, features the remix by Bosco Mann and Antibalas' keyboardist Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod that removes most of the band's par ts and recasts the arrangement in the Makossa style of early-'70s Cameroon, by way of a little bit of Jamaican dub.

As evidenced by his previous work with NNA and beyond, Ryan Power has spent most of his life immersed in the many realms of music creation. ‘They Sell Doomsday’ is his seventh full-length album, and with dedication to one’s craft comes refinement and mastery. In many ways, this is Power’s most ambitious recorded statement yet, combining the musical palettes of his previous work with explorations into uncharted territories, plus his quintessential attention to sonic detail and innovative lyricism. The lyrical themes of ‘They Sell Doomsday’ touch on the building blocks of our contemporary human existence - the future, the past, romance, purpose, human nature, technological mayhem, cerebral disarray - all sifted through the sardonic mind of Ryan Power, and delivered in lyrically beautiful, often cryptic poetics. While perhaps more conceptual than previous albums, the lyrics on 'They Sell Doomsday' also show maturity through self-awareness - of fears and faults, both personally and societally. Power continues to muse on the joys and pains of love, desire, and the inherent duality of their conflicting biological and mystical tendencies. Country Florist: Though Little Rock’s mythological artists and musicians tend to stay off radar, the region has always been a flourishing community of constant creativity, and La Petite Roche’s Andrew Morgan is no exception. In this supposed dancing wasteland, Mr. Morgan, has a quite a long list of creative based music projects. Best known for being one half of experimental rock duo CHINESE GIRLS and his other dance /dj moniker ETTIEM, with releases on Drawing Room and I’m a Cliché (France), respectively, Andrew’s love for twisted takes on house, disco, and anything rhythmic has been his most focused musical headspace for well over a decade now. Born in Mississippi for the bargain low cost of four silver dollars at a US Air Force base hospital, Mr. Morgan eventually relocated to the Natural State in search of tennis courts for higher learning and the region’s famed diamond mines, finally settling in North Little Rock where he resides with his wife and trouble-makin’ felines.

After the release of their demo tape, Corporeal (Anti-Matter Records, 2015), Cavernlight buckled down to write the material for As We Cup Our Hands..., finally deciding to share their introspection with others. That period of writing would evolve into 5 movements detailing a life that is lived suffering through severe, crippling anxiety and the burden of mental illness. They discuss the arduous task of attempting to find truth in the natural world and work through psychological roadblocks, and the realizations one has as they begin to come out the other side and attempt to heal. The Stream of Ache is the source for these songs.

Simply put, Malediction is a statement of intent. A purely Satanic album, in the band's eyes, and one which draws a line firmly in the sand, this is pure Southern Vassaforian Hell driven to the outer reaches of primitivism and transcendence. Here, VASSAFOR strip bare their most barbaric tendencies, down to their most unapologetic form, and build anew a temple of unimaginable might. The maw of chaos opens ever wide, beckoning the listener to submit and be devoured; meanwhile, tendrils of tension untether in a manner most ambient. All that led to the ‘The Wasted Years’: Four albums, many visions… ‘Bath Of Bacon’ was an experiment in sound, conjoining that Ronco platter to Todd Rundgren, a guitar from Wes Montgomery’s cupboard and mentions of imaginary monsters set to some funky chops. “The sound of a few mates failing to take note that they’ve an LP to make!” claims the JB site. It’s pop meets bluesy scat with plenty of deadpan irony – a theme that will recur. ‘A Scandal In Bohemia’ took a “competent little rock band” with a bassist who’d served time in Bauhaus into a world chorused by multi-track vocals and bathroom ambience. “A top-shelf diamond of a record that is filled with excellent, memorable songs.” (All Music). ‘Sex And Travel’ offered a broadening perspective. Competence and European travel beget a narrative akin to an impressionistic cold war spy movie, a “mess of styles” that became coherent. “A great album,” muses All Music before comparing JB mainman Pat Fish to Ray Davies circa 1969. It’s an “accidental” concept album prone to fleeting melancholy.

‘Distressed Gentlefolk’, ahead of the original band’s demise through “fatigue and liquor” was the Butcher’s stab at making their “greatest album ever”. “A beautifully romantic record of soft rock ballads and jazzy torch songs,” enthused Trouser Press. There’s a folky edge scratching away beside the inevitable romp through pop music’s historical lineage. Four albums, then. The ‘80s recast at an ironic party of malcontents. Indie pop as a soundtrack. Songs that shouldn’t fit together – but do. ‘Wasted Years’? Yeah, really.

List Price $14.99 Strawberry Runners is the project of songwriter, Emi Night. Emi took up the guitar when she was 7 and teacher, Judy Collins, (not the one you’re thinking of) taught her to strum along to Bob Dylan and church hymns in Madison, Indiana. Music took Emi from teenage years on the midwestern DIY circuit to Bloomington, IN where she formed the bands Princess City and Summer Salt; out to Denver, CO, becoming a member of the orchestral pop-punk band, Mega Gem, and where Strawberry Runners came to life in 2013; and most recently, back across to the Northeast, and Brooklyn, NY. Two years in the making, In the Garden, In the Night is Strawberry Runner’s first EP. Recorded on a snowy mountain in Evergreen, CO, mixed by Doug Boehm in LA, and available from Salinas Records in October 2017, the album presents five of the band’s core songs. The tracks are so catchy, so energetic and relaxed in turn, that on first listen you might almost miss the narrative being told, where love and pain bloom side by side: one story begins with a carefree dip in the river, parts with the sudden news of the death of a friend’s grown children, and fiercely, softly, and sincerely affirms that “search your whole life long, there ain’t nothing strong as a Kentucky woman.” All of the EP's material is drawn from Emi’s childhood and adolescence and has been well-tested live. While we await its release, Emi and her band are laying the groundwork for a full length album of her more contemporaneous reflections incorporating the formal and tonal influences of Appalachian icon Jean Ritchie and German folk singer Sibylle Baier. The richness of her music is in Emi’s tender and easy integration of the varied styles she’s called home: most of the songs are short enough, with a humble faith in brevity; melody compels every word with the mystery and familiarity of a hymn, stays in your ear like pop, and flares up with punk-rock verve; poignant scenes are conjured with the respect, compassion, sensitivity, and generosity of great singer-songwriters like Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Stuart Murdoch, or Jenny Lewis. These are the kind of songs that ring true no matter how close or far they hew to the incidents that inspired them; they are pictures painted from a life too often troubled by violence and fear but also graced with an inheritance of compassion, determination, and — best of all for us — music.
