SS: I feel like one of the things that sets us apart as a label is the emphasis we place on cultivating nurturing environments for our artists. This applies to both wellness and creativity. We also really strive to represent a broad range of cultures, ethnicities, gender identities and socio-economic backgrounds with our roster.

Is the label tied to a specific geographical area? How is this reflected in your releases?
J.S: Could not be more important!!!!!!!!!!
SS: I’m going off the grid and shouting out Vertigo Records in Ottawa. That’s where I grew up and bought some of my first wax in the early 2000s. I remember getting an original Fiction pressing of Pornography for $6.50 (which I promptly lost in a move.) Times have changed, and it’s cool that they’ve been able to stay in business so long. They say our sun will explode in about 5 billion years or so- how would you like the label to be remembered?
SS: Jon and I have been making music together for a long time. The first Telephone Explosion release was our band Teenanger’s first EP. Being musicians gives us an empathy towards our artists that maybe would not be there otherwise, or at least in a different way.

Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about?
SS: The biggest change is that we now make a living off the label. We had to juggle it with our day jobs for a long time. I still have a closet full of business casual attire so I just wear that to work even though I don’t have to. Khakis, Polos, Oxford shirts…pretty much covering all the bases.
How has the label changed since it started?
What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released?
SS: Some days I feel guilty that we’re involved in the sales and distribution of physical goods, and the toll that might take on our environment. I do remind myself that records tend not to get thrown into landfill very often. Yes, it takes materials to make them, but once they are created they are usually owned and enjoyed (and possibly re-sold) for their full existence. Also, music streaming services require miles and miles of servers that are located in remote areas. They all need to be powered and produce emissions as well. Really there is no way to listen to contemporary music without some sort of carbon footprint.
How did you personally get started in the music industry?
What has been the biggest challenge for you and the label during the Pandemic?
SS: We don’t really have a non-Canadian contemporary artist on our current roster, but we would like to change that in the near future.
SS: The average Telephone Explosion fan is a nuanced music nerd with excellent taste. Before working at the label did you have any experience playing in bands or making music of your own?
SS: In a weird way there is more optimism in the music industry in 2022 than there was in 2008. When we started the label, CD sales were still in a free fall and file shar ing was huge. Streaming was non-existent. The vinyl boom hadn’t really hit yet, and reissues weren’t as much of a thing. I think Record Store Day was just getting off the ground. Plus there was a huge global recession. Things seem much more stable now.
J.S: Definitely for our good looks.
SS: I want Telephone Explosion to be remembered as the label co-owned by Steve Sido li, the man who went on to become the first global emperor in 2030. He single-hand edly convinced the invading Neptunians to stand down with his heart-wrenching cover of Sublime’s What I Got
SS: It’s been amazing to get back out to live shows again, and there is no better feeling than discovering someone you’d like to work with in that environment. We recently saw a Toronto singer/songwriter called Shirley Hurt and we’re planning on releasing her debut digital album in December. Very cool Cate Le Bon-Meets-Nico vibe but done in her own unique style.
When and where did the label begin?
J.S: Artist recommendations are huge. Badge Époque Ensemble Clouds Of Joy is out of this world!!! Jane Inc’s latest Faster Than I Can Take is incredibly fun. The entire Morn ing Trip catalog is amazing for super chill ambient / new age sounds.
What in your opinion has been the biggest change in the music industry from when you first started compared to now?
J.S: Night and day. I don’t even know if we had goals back then. HA! Now we’re trying to take over the entire music industry and make tens of dollars!
SS: My original goals were more on the design end of things. Making cool logos, ensuring that all the LP packaging looked good, having a functioning website. I still strive for all that stuff but I’m more concerned with helping artists get as much out of their releases as possible. Musicians love their albums like parents love their children and we want to honor that.
SS: Definitely the Frank Hatchett retrospective. I’m very proud of the design work I did for that release, and seeing the real heads embrace the actual music has been just as satisfying.
JS: With this label! Haha.
SS: I have to echo Jon with the supply chain problems. Things seem better now, but it was a good reminder that they can fall apart quite suddenly given the right set of circumstances.
SS: In the early years, we’d go to shows with this old leather suitcase from the 80s that was designed to hold cassettes. Our first batch of releases were all tapes so we’d fill the suitcase with all of them and then set up a makeshift booth somewhere. I felt like a traveling salesman for sure.
SS: Colored vinyl doesn’t have the same fidelity. Our job is to make sure that the records sound as good as possible. That means we stay away from color.
J.S: Toronto Canada, 2006 I think. Steve knows exactly.
J.S: Impossible question, but i’m obsessed with Badge Époque Ensemble Clouds Of Joy It’s such a crazy album. The coral element combined with the funkiest jazz funk is such an amazing combination. It’s also TER100!
How would you describe the average fan of the label?
SS: November 2007 to be exact. I went through my old emails just in case.
J.S Definitely: We were Toronto-centric before Drake stole our shtick. ;) But we also do tons of non-regional reissues (Bruce Haack, Frank Hatchett) and Morning Trip has artists from all over.
J.S: Varied! I think there are so many different entry points to the TER / Morning Trip world. You could get into us through the deep reissues we do (Bruce Haack, Laraaji, Steve Roach, Frank Hatchett, Alice Damon, William Eaton etc) or through the amazing contemporary catalog (Badge Époque Ensemble, Bernice, Joseph Shabason, Masahiro Takahashi, Scott Hardware, Jane Inc, Freak Heat Waves, Pantayo, Fresh Pepper, Album, Lee Paradise, Dorothea Paas, Mas Aya etc.)
J.S: Oh jeez, in so many ways. I would say the most significant is that we are way better looking and much better at our jobs.
How would you describe your overall ambitions and goals as a label from when you first started compared to now?
J.S: Yup, we’re both musicians.
J.S: Staying sane and dealing with the Supply Chain. Keep Calm and Supply Chain On? Is that meme-able yet?
In your opinion, how important is it to be environmentally sustainable within the music industry these days?
How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?
We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?
What’s the wildest marketing promotion you’ve ever worked on for any release?
SS: My first band, Frodo, which I started when I was 16. We played exactly one show in a bar and three people showed up. Two of them were my parents. I knew then that the future was bright.
J.S: Snobby AF to be honest. We don’t make it, and I don’t buy the stuff. If I wanted to collect something for the novelty of the item, I’d get back into Pogs.
J.S: It changes completely every 6 months!
J.S: Hmmm. Back in the day we would hand assemble our record jackets to save money. We’d get all our friends in a room and drink beer and glue the sides together. The quality control got pretty bad by the end of the night.

With help transferring ageing cassettes and annotating the results from Shelley Salant of Tyvek, the unearthed results are revelatory a gorgeous sequence of gently decaying tone float made with an incredibly primitive DIY set-up. All albums are pressed on clear vinyl with no banding, mastered from the original tapes by Warren Defever at Third Man Mastering, and feature printed inner sleeves with essays on each album by Mike McGonigal (author of books on My Bloody Valentine and Galaxie 500).

Whilst ‘official’ His Name Is Alive albums are much-loved by fans of the 4AD label in it’s crepuscular Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil period, these tentative tracks reveal a different kind of sound, notably losing the layer of prominent female lead vocals to reveal the shadowy instrumental moves going on underneath, with some tracks recorded when Defever was as young as 10.
His Name is Alive has had over a hundred releases since their first cassette in 1986. HNIA spent 13 years recording for the legendary label 4AD and sold 100,000+ records, toured the world, received gold and platinum records for soundtracking Tom Cruise’s nervous breakdown in the movie Jerry Maguire and collaborated on two short films with famed animators the Quay Brothers, and name-checked by David Bowie as one of his favourite artists. Warren Defever continues to live and work in Detroit.

On July 13, 2006 the Drive-By Truckers set up shop at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA. It was the 25th Anniversary of the store. The band performed to a packed house and played a blistering set of fan-favorites featuring the songs, “18 Wheels of Love”, “Let There Be Rock”, “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Daddy’s Cup.” The performance was also set up to benefit the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. The foundation provides, among other things, music scholarships in the Richmond area. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Patterson Hood ended up writing the song “Two Daughters and A Beautiful Wife” about Bryan Harvey and his family.

Like a character out of your favorite movie or a novel you can’t put down, Ashe possesses her own mystique rooted in quiet wisdom, yet amplified with vibrance and spirit. Teaming up with FINNEAS as producer, she reached critical mass on 2019’s Moral of the Story: Chapter 1 EP. The single “Moral of the Story” appeared in NETFLIX’s To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and exploded on streaming platforms, going platinum in the US and Silver in the UK. Her 2021 full-length debut, Ashlyn, arrived to widespread critical acclaim from Variety, Nylon, Billboard, and more. Beyond tallying nearly 2 billion total streams, she took over television with performances on TODAY, Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, American Idol, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Sonically, there are a few things we got right in the 90’s–stompy rage fueled queer bands, hazy uberpedaled guitar, poeticism to be yelled full chested towards the windshields of our 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) hand vehicles. More generally, there was also a lot we got wrong. Sarah Shook’s new solo project, Mightmare, finds a way to roll the sounds we couldn’t live without into a response to the things we couldn’t live with, confronting their habits and the rules they live by in the process. Loved for their work in Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Shook’s Cruel Liars brings crispy clean, country twanged vocals to the table alongside the furiously urgent need to express themselves. To confuse parts for the whole is inevitable with Palm. Drummer Hugo Stanley, bassist Gerasimos Livitsa nos and guitarists/vocalists/high school sweethearts Eve Alpert and Kasra Kurt started making music together as teenagers, and spent much of their twenties in the kind of proximity unusual for adults, outside of touring bands and the International Space Station. For a number of years the band consumed the lives of its members to a point of exhaustion: “To be honest I think we got a little burnt out. There were times where it wasn’t clear if we’d make another record,” says Alpert. It was only after multiple freak injuries followed by a pandemic, forced a pause - from touring but also from writing, rehearsing, even seeing each other- that the four were able to regroup and see a way forward again.

On their latest e ort, Nicks and Grazes, due October 14 via Saddle Creek, Palm embrace discordance to dazzling e ect. “We wanted to reconcile two potentially opposing aesthetics,” Kurt says. “To capture the spontaneous, free energy of our live shows while integrating elements from the traditionally gridded palette of electronic music.” In order to avoid what Kurt refers to as “Palm goes electro,” the musicians spent years educating themselves on the ins and outs of production by learning Ableton while also experiment ing with “the percussive, textural, and gestural potential” of their instruments. To this end, the band contin ued the age-old tradition of instrument-preparation, augmenting guitars with drumsticks, metal rods and, at the suggestion of Charles Bullen (This Heat, Lifetones), coiling rubber-coated gardening wire around the strings. The unruliness of the prepared guitar on songs like “Mirror Mirror” and “Eager Copy” contrasts with the steadfast reproducibility of the album’s electronic elements.

While Palm cite Japanese pop music, dub, and footwork as in uences on this album’s sonic palette, they found themselves returning time and again to the artists who inspired them to start the group over a decade ago. “When we were rst starting out as a band, we bonded over an appreciation of heavy, aggres sive, noisy music,” Alpert re ects. “We wrote parts that were just straight-up metal.” Kurt adds, “I found myself rediscovering and re–falling in love with the visceral, jagged quality of guitars in the music of Glenn Branca, The Fall, Beefheart, and Sonic Youth, all important early Palm in uences.” Returning to the fundamentals gave Palm a strong foundation upon which they could experiment freely, resulting in their most ambitious and revelatory album to date.

Yes, “ambient,” in quotes. Nobody knows what that word means at this point, but luckily it doesn’t really matter. Nobody is listening to a marketing director’s idea of a filing system. It’s just a word and not what the word means. What we are listening to is quiet music, the best of which is quite often the most subtly chaotic and free. Multi rhythmic, expertly constructed, free floating walls of sound. It’s not a new concept, and It’s been explored masterfully by composers from Steve Reich (The Desert Music) to Susumu Yokota (Grinning Cat), but for many it was uncharted listening territory until the start of the 2020 global pandemic. It fit right into the slow drip fried nerve cocktail of apartment gardening, antidepressants, and YouTube ASMR, and the tides don’t seem to be receding any time soon.

With any new wave, though, there should be an acknowledgment of the continuum and a nod to the Old Masters. The partnership between Shornstein and Niño is just that. Niño’s influence is vast (who comes here with a network of regular collaborators including I a s o s and N a t e M e r c e r e a u ), as is the presence of harpist M i k a e l a D a v i s , and the result on this collaborative album is to push Photay towards the sounds of the earth. And the water. And the spaces that exist, somewhere, probably. Mysteries unfold around each corner on every listen.

Louis Cole is an LA-based singer-songwriter and sickeningly talented multi-instrumentalist with a strong DIY aesthetic. He is on a mission to create deep feelings through music. Thundercat describes him as “one of Los Angeles's greatest musicians”.
Thundercat has a song on his GRAMMY award-winning album “It Is What It Is” called ‘I Love Louis Cole’ that the pair wrote together. The album was produced by the band alongside friends Ben Romans-Hopcraft (Warmduscher) and Jamie Neville (Pumarosa) over a two week period at Neville’s home studio in South London. They then mixed the record at FOLD, the club hidden away on a trading estate in East London. One place intimate, another industrial; this is PVA’s world.

Steve Reid is steeped in musical history and a true pioneer of US deep left field jazz. He played in Sun Ra’s Arkestra, was a Motown session drummer and backed James Brown at the Apollo! He was a Black Panther, imprisoned during the Vietnam war as a conscientious objector and lived in Africa in the early 1970s. Reid worked with Freddie Hubbard, Gary Bartz, Ornette Coleman, Lester Bowie, Fela Kuti, Leon Thomas, Miles Davis and many more in his long illustrious and groundbreaking career.

Soul Jazz Records are re releasing this rarest release of deep heavyweight jazz by Steve Reid and The Master Brotherhood, entitled ‘Odyssey of the Oblong Square’ first released over thirty five years ago on Steve Reid’s own Mustevic Sound record label (where it came out in an edition of 1000 copies) and has been a serious collectors album ever since. These special gold vinyl and CD editions are both one off pressings, which, like the original, are limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Steve Reid became known worldwide for his radical collaborations with Kieran Hebden after they first recorded together on the Steve Reid Ensemble album Spirit Walk, released on Soul Jazz in 2005, releasing five joint releases together in the following years.

Before The Reds, Pinks & Purples started getting noticed by a larger audience, the "I Should Have Helped You" 4 song EP snuck out on Swedish experimental label I Dischi Del Barone and quickly disappeared, becoming a little-heard but often whispered about piece of the RPPs discography. Recorded around the same time as the material that ended up on the buzzed-about LP "Uncommon Weather," it contains some of the best examples of Glenn Donaldson’s melancholy but wry take on indie pop. Needless to say, it's terrific.

Tuomo & Markus are a new musical project from acclaimed Finnish soul/jazz artist Tuomo Prättälä and singer/songwriter Markus Nordenstreng of The Latebirds. We start north of the Leeds-Liverpool canal. We attempt to retrace our steps. The map gets us so far, until the scenery is no longer familiar. It’s not clear when we diverged from our original course, but the views are spectacular. Sheer cliffs. Ominous skies. The air is close. We go further back. The very beginning; Düsseldorf, Köln and The San Francisco Tape Music Centre. There’s been plenty of water under the bridge since then. The journey is significantly longer. The river is in full flood, and we follow it all the way to the sea this time. And then we’re back in the room, and the studio building once again echoes to the rhythm of the loom, recreated by 1970s drum machine technology. The working day is lost in ascending patterns. The evening sees us break new ground to the north-west. The sun is low in the sky but the heat remains. Dale after dale until there are no more to cross. Hazy. Familiar, yet different. Euphoric almost.

Japanese aesthetics absorbed from her time spent living there are subconsciously woven into Rachael’s songs. "I first stepped foot in Tokyo in 2008, sparked by the adventure of such a rich and different culture and later on I lived on a small island and experienced an appealing and balanced way of life: the aesthetics, the art and the traditions,” she recalls. “There was a lot of caring for each other, a lot of gentleness, and a lot of simple living in harmony with nature. Japan left its cultural mark on me and is now part of my inner world and I’m sure this comes out with the words and music I write”.
“This album is a lot more honest and personal than ‘Flux'” she shares, “but I feel the songs are universal as they are largely rooted in truth and love. If I had to pick a favourite album it would be this one because of the magical rekindling of human connection when me and my band got back in a room together again. All that magic went into these songs."
“But overall” Rachael explains “this is an album of homecoming and reconnecting to my own truth, to my community here, to the earthy land that I love and to the sky that I know.”
Like so many people disconnected from their communities and struggling through the lockdowns, Rachael Dadd turned inwards, seeking escape through music and connection through song writing, and her hope is that when people listen to ‘Kaleidoscope' “they will feel held and find space to breathe, grieve and celebrate.”

The story of H.B. Nielsen is the story of the modern rambler, wri�ng about himself and experiencing events through his years traveling around the world. All hailing from a teenager moving from Sweden to New York to play ice hockey. The music draws heavily on Americana and folk tradi�ons, but also immerses itself in indie and post-rock elements with ambient delays, thick reverbs and layers of loopings in live performances.
While stateside H.B picked up a guitar instead of the hockey s�ck. Being able to strum just a few chords, he started wri�ng songs for fun while studying poetry and fi c�on wri�ng.

This is the remixed and remastered version of the album originally released in 1994 with four bonus tracks by DEMON recorded during the UNBROKEN session. If you like ‘Demon’ then you will almost certainly like this. Dave’s voice is very distinctive, the tracks could have been on almost any ‘Demon’ record without seeming to be out of place. A nice combination of soft and harsh, slow and fast, acoustic and electric with good guitar breaks. Hill was always a powerhouse vocalist and in this setting he positively thrives, an almost Roger Daltrey meets Bruce Springsteen vibe in evidence. Just listen to his stunning performance on the brass infused "Old England's Eyes (New England Sky)" to hear him almost out boss The Boss!

Their 13th studio album release from 2016. Never ones to repeat themselves, DEMON proved time and time again that they are as good as, if not better than their peers, even if they aren’t a household name. Cemetery Junction was a 11 track leviathan that the band are immensely proud of. From the opening track Are You Just Like Me, it’s clear that the band are firing on all cylinders, and demand your full and undivided attention. Dave Hill may be the only constant since the bands inception, but that doesn’t mean the band lost any of their sound, in fact, they are possibly one of the few bands who have managed to maintain their signature sound, but also keep the identity of each member intact.. Closing the album is Some’s Watching You, almost a reprise to the supernatural and demonic themes that DEMON were known for in their early years, a haunting almost nursery rhyme -esque track that sends shivers down your spine, this throwback shows that at heart, this is still the band that emerged in 1980, but they have come a long way, but they’ve still got a long way to go.

Up The Bracket, justly considered one of the greatest albums of the noughties, was originally released on October 21st 2002 by Rough Trade Records. Up The Bracket arrived like a raging bull in a tired post-Britpop china shop and introduced the world to The Libertines, a new gang of London bohemians, whose ragged tunes, red military tunics, opiated poetry and ‘live now pay never’ lifestyle came to define the millennial angst of the early noughties. At the heart of the band is the blood bond bromance between the ramshackle Music Hall Jagger/Richards, Peter Doherty and Carl Barat, ably assisted by the rock solid rhythm twins John Hassall and Gary Powell. Any bookie worth his salt would have given you short odds on this quartet surviving more than a month or two, given the teetering on the brink lifestyle they chose to lead, but here we are two decades later and our Byronic heroes, though older and wiser, are still fighting the good fight and making music every bit as vital as their debut. The belief, talent and fervour that Doherty spoke of in their earliest manifesto has stood them in good stead.
Up The Bracket, which was produced by Mick Jones of The Clash, takes you on a wondrously poetic journey into the band’s mythical world and their fevered dreams of Albion, a land of squalid glamour, liberty, equality, fraternity, gin palaces and chip shops. Quite simply Pete, Carl, Gary and John created a hugely compelling timeless British rock’n’roll classic debut as relevant now as it was upon its release.

Before I made my first record, I had not toured, I had no road band, and a very slim amount of experience in the studio. These past 4 years since leaving Big Machine to become fully independent have been a whirlwind, and I’ve learned so much from so many great artists and bands that I have had the pleasure of touring with, including artists Whitey Morgan, Blackberry Smoke, and Cody Jinks. They taught me the importance of being at the wheel of your own destiny. I was really on edge for a while about the frustrations of not being able to come out with another album in so long, but I’m very glad that I have waited 5 years to make another record because it’s given me the time to focus on finding my voice as a songwriter and all the pain and joy that has come my way.

For Rock en Español, Vol. 1, Los Straitjackets have recruited three talented friends to perform a set of rock & roll classics in Spanish -- Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Big Sandy of retro-country kings Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, and Little Willie G., lead singer with legendary East L.A. soul-rockers Thee Midnighters. While most folks will be familiar with these tunes in their English-language originals, many of the versions that appear on this album were taken from Spanish rewrites recorded in the ‘60s by Mexican teen groups such as Los Teen Tops, Los Locos del Ritmo and Los Rebeldes del Rock. Originally bonding over their love of heavy music when they first met in 2009, The Man With The Magic Soap foregrounds those aesthetic influences that have always lurked in the shadows of their music, distilling decades of immersion in punk and hardcore into a record that gleefully shirks categorization. Their debut draws distinct parallels between seemingly disparate genres, using electronic synthesis to harness a wild sonic adventurism informed by punk’s ethos. Through their application of their electronic music processes in a wildly different context Persher finds liberation, joy and caustic release in bleak sonics which side-step perceived genre constraints and carve out a unique space from the group’s inception. Both artists’ boundaryless solo releases have established them as two of the most inventive and versatile producers in electronic music, extending from chest-rattling rhythm workouts drenched in rumbling low-end to psychotropic soundscapes that blossom from synthesizer pads into tangible atmospheres. Their live collaboration Karenn recaptures the punk ethics and energy of early dance music pioneers. Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley (here with her first group The Soulettes, whose iconic image features on the cover) are two of Jamaica's most famous female singers hugely popular today. Both these artists became internationally famous as The I Threes (along with Judy Mowatt), Bob Marley's backing singers alongside The Wailers. Also featured are Hortense Ellis, sister of Alton who cut many smash hits on the island, and Jennifer Lara, a lady who had a long career with Studio One, singing on countless sides.

Clement Dodd often referred to his mother as ‘Jamaica’s first female DJ’, as she would play records at the bar whenever he was on trips to the US, hunting down R’n’B records. Other important women behind the scenes included Norma Dodd (wife of Clement) whose sleevenotes featured on many Studio One releases, and Enid Cumberland, who as well as being a successful artist (half of the duo Keith and Enid), taught harmony in the studio and ran the studio shop. It would also be impossible not to mention Sister Ignatius, who ran the infamous Alpha Boys School for over 50 years, encouraging students which included Tommy McCook, Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore, Lester Sterling and Don Drummond, Theo Beckford, Cedric Brooks, Johnny Osbourne and countless other musicians and artists to excel at music, and many of whom became integral to the success of Studio One. ‘Now Is’ marks a new chapter in an ongoing quest for refinement and evolution. More playful and melodic, the album draws from much experimentation in minimalist songwriting and seamlessly blends synthesisers and acoustic instruments. “There are some pieces that are influenced quite strongly by the isolation and anxiety of these times. There are also pieces which are more optimistic and vibrant, which I think is a consistent attitude of my records, as I want art to express many aspects of life.”
From the elevating arrangements of ‘Beginnings’ and motorik beats of ‘World Turns’, to the isolation of ‘Frontiers’, influenced by the barren landscapes of Iceland, Rival Consoles’ eighth studio album subtly morphs and evolves. “The title of the record ‘Now Is’ interests me because it is the beginning of a statement, but it is incomplete. I like art that is open and suggestive of ideas even if they are inspired by very specific things. With my previous record ‘Overflow’ being very dark, heavy and almost dystopian, I wanted to escape into a different world with this music and ended up creating a record which is a lot more colourful and euphoric.”
Rival Consoles is set to appear at festivals across Europe this summer, with headline shows expected to follow in the autumn.
For the sonic ‘Vision of Self’, West looked to create the kind of movement and colour a string section in an orchestra would construct, but with synthesisers. “I think there’s a lot of synergy between the two worlds. I wanted to create a hypnotic journey, where the synths and sounds weave in and out of each other, so you get lost in the music and don’t know where one sound starts or another ends.” This “journey” West refers to is symbiotic of the way he has approached music throughout a progressive career –an ongoing project that is never static and always moving forward.
A sense of euphoria is reached with the pulsating title track which bursts into colour like the appearance of the summer sun, while ‘Echoes’ is a vivid exploration of rhythm and sound for summer nights. The track starts with a dense collage of modular synths, fragmented metallic tones, broken sounding drums and a downcast melodic synth line. “This is a piece where the main melody has been in my head for a long time and was just waiting to come out. I kind of think of it as the sonic equivalent to an impressionist painting in that I wanted to explore the sensation of lots of small layers of different colours and textures that are constantly moving around each other.”

Band members Mia Wood (percussion) and Hadley Davis (vocals, guitar, songwriting) met in 2012, finding that their different musical backgrounds either in or outside of formal training built the right environment for facilitating this duality. Later, alongside Eric Stafford (guitar, secondary vocals, synth) and Brandon “Bud” Armienti (bass, secondary vocals, synth), they’ve come to release an impressively varied body of work. EPs 5, Six, and Seven, as well as LP Every Day I’m Less Zen took on styles that varied from the compression of pandemic bedroom production to post isolation expansion and eventual DIY maximalism. Down to their self-produced music videos (read video art), their work is textured, layered, and unapologetically provocative.
From their masterfully titled, anthemic “Shit Opus,” to their growling, distorted guitar, Shutups could be effectively described as a group of anti-establishment California indie punks with a vested interest in encouraging capitalism’s implosion. Leaving it there would also be a disservice to the deliberation, complexity, and artistry in their music. The groups’ second LP I can’t eat nearly as much as I want to vomit presents a very human expression of reality in spite of what is, overwhelmingly, a bad time––serving us a sort of seething, technicolor alternative sound that’s both intimate and infuriated.

On a first, careless, listen, Stockholm four-piece Melby might seem like a charming, fun little jangle-pop band. Pay a little more attention however, and you’ll find their waters run a lot deeper than that. The band have all the flash and sparkle of your favourite indie band, but add an ability to touch moods and feelings with a meaning beyond most of their peers. Their guitars, drums and synths rattle, roll and flicker around each other, all held together by the soul-shiver in Wiezell’s vocals, to make immaculate little guitar-pop gems, equally dusted with sadness and sugar.

Finding comfort in a sea of uncertainty might be a good way to describe Looks Like A Map, the bands second album. The record captures Melby at a moment where they’re growing as people and as a band, expanding the reach of their sonic horizons, and taking in deeper and heavier themes, trying to find a home in an often-alienating world. The music they made around that has a little touch of sorcery around it, sometimes soft as smoke, sometimes woozy and dream-blurred, sometimes crashing and explosive. But even through all that evolution, the heart and the soul have remained the same, and Looks Like A Map still has that Melby-feeling, of a band who put all of themselves into everything they make and their own blend of indie, psych, pop, rock and folk. It’s a new high for the band that have toured Scandinavia, Germany and the UK and have played festivals such as Eurosonic, Reeperbahn and By:Larm, and one that hints at even bigger things to come.

I also felt I had to speak out about racial violence against all groups of people. We all need to stand up and work together for peace and understanding. This is why I wrote lyrics for “Colors are Beautiful.”
The woman with a purple wig is me. To protect myself from the violence against Asian women, I had to hide my identity, wearing a wig, mask, and sunglasses. In the beginning, I was 5lled with fear. Writing this song helped me to regain my emotional balance.
All of these songs are about my experience of the pandemic while living in New York City.

First Light is a compelling, cathartic listen, as Anderson’s poetic lyrics and anthemic melodies make for an inspired fit with producer Thomas Wincek. Drawing on his All Tiny Creatues project as well as his work with Justin Vernon’s Volcano Choir, Wincek has created a huge sonic backdrop here. Anderson’s expansive narratives and sing-along hooks weave through explosive rockers like “Caps Ridge Line” and “Still Life”, pastoral mood pieces like “Looking Glass” and “Streetlamps”, and haunting ballads like the pensive "Tower in the Fog” and gorgeous closer “Halloween.”
The whole thing feels a bit like indie-folk stadium rock, as if The Weakerthans were fronted by fellow Canadian Bryan Adams. As Anderson puts it, “What started as a text exchange between me and Tom about Joni Mitchell in the 80s turned into something strange and awesome.” What’s perhaps most awesome about the project is hearing a bedroom singersongwriter pushing themselves in such a fun and unexpected way. First Light is a really special record.

This record is a document of Ilgenfritz’s and Oliveros’s friendship and collaboration between 2007 until Oliveros’s passing in 2016, from San Diego, CA to Kingston, NY to Brooklyn, NY.
