Be Like Them / Cactused / Primed And Ready / Off The Beach / Unrepentant / Shadows / Oklahoma / Hung / Humming Wire exhibit little inclination to look back - rather they remain resolutely focused on producing music which is smart, vital and defiantly modern. Mind Hive is the group’s first newly recorded material since 2017’s Silver/Lead. That album garnered rave reviews and career best sales. Yet, if Silver/Lead set the bar pretty high, Mind Hive seems to have no problem vaulting over it. Be Like Them is a super-angular composition, utilizing a recently rediscovered Wire lyric from 1977. Colin Newman and Matthew Simms’ guitars constantly mesh and diverge, whilst the rhythm section ensures the song prowls forward with an unstoppable menace. Cactused is the first of Mind Hive’s pop moments. The vocal is wide eyed and wired, with effects-heavy guitar work creating a bright web of noise, with the song’s stop/start moments providing a series of precise energy bursts. Primed And Ready rides out on a tightly pulsing synth sequence punctuated by icy slivers of guitar. This is Wire at their most compressed yet propulsive. Off The Beach is another prime pop song. With its breezy, optimistic melody, and blend of electric and acoustic guitars, the song initially sees the group seemingly celebrating the joys of everyday life but things are destined to turn a shade stranger. Unrepentant explores the kind of bucolic soundscape early Pink Floyd would have been proud to call their own. Boasting one of the album’s finest texts, the song radiates out into a shimmering sonic heat haze. Shadows pulls the classic Wire trick of placing a dark and cruel lyric in a musical setting of tender beauty. Never has the recounting of atrocity been so seductively pitched. Oklahoma is the muscular and dramatic joker in the pack. Lewis’ dark vocal swims through a rich compound of guitar textures and synth tones, building into a masterclass of tension and release. Hung is the album’s centrepiece. This 8-minute excursion matches a brief but evocative lyric with a dense, mesmeric guitar grind. Simms and Newman’s keyboards add a plaintive note, as the song moves through a series of sections, each with its own distinct atmosphere. Humming is a beatless autumnal drift fashioned from delicate keyboard textures and rich soaring guitar tones. Newman delivers a state of the world lyric with a touching sense of innocence, whilst the piece ends with Lewis’ husky baritone listing locations and their difficult associations. An elegiac end to a supremely confident album.

Mind Hive arrives at a time when Wire are being cited as an influence by yet another generation of bands. A career spanning feature documentary called People in a Film is due for release late 2020. Quite how a group that has been operating for such a long period is still able to produce such exciting and essential work is difficult to understand. And yet here we are…

OVERVIEW TNGHT’s crescent moon is appearing once again from behind heavy clouds. It has been seven years since Hudson Mohawke (Ross Birchard) and Lunice’s (Lunice Fermin Pierre II) prodigious debut which accidentally changed the sound of the pop music caught in its wake. The pair of bedroom-producers-cum-super-producers come from Glasgow and Montreal and have aligned once again on a record which aims to chew up and spit out every influence in an exhilarating 7 tracks. ‘TNGHT II’ will be released 12th November via Warp & LuckyMe. TNGHT II has the wildness turned up. In this, the second epoch, the pair explore new forms: they’ve collected more equipment, made a couple hits, own bigger speakers, loaded a thousand flutes into FL Studio.

OVERVIEW Yorkston/Thorne/Khan – a trio of James Yorkston (guitar/nyckelharpa/vocals), Jon Thorne (double-bass/vocals) and Suhail Yusuf Khan (sarangi/vocals) - are pleased to announce their new album Navarasa : Nine Emotions. YTK unite one of the key spiritual visionaries and architects of Hindustani art music, the poet-philosopher Hazrat Amir Khusrau with the key literary visionary of Scottish and Scotslanguage culture, Robert Burns. This bricolage of diverse cross-cultural elements is apparent across Navarasa : Nine Emotions, and all of what YTK create. James Yorkston weaves in Scottish folk, sangster and literary strands; Jon Thorne is grounded in jazz and groove; what the New Delhi-based, eighth-generation hereditary musician Suhail Yusuf Khan brings to this feast of pulses and cycles is northern Indian classical, light classical (thumri, for example) and Sufi devotional musical and literary forms. What binds these diverse musical strands together is, in James’ phrase, “a dark happiness.” Navarasa : Nine Emotions is the trio’s third record and follows Everything Sacred (2016) and its successor Neuk Wight Delhi All-Stars (2017).

SELLING POINTS • The band features songwriter James Yorkston (from East Neuk of Fife), who has released eight acclaimed solo albums for Domino, Suhail Yusuf Khan, the award-winning sarangi player and singer from New Delhi, and bassist and composer Jon Thorne (from Isle of Wight), who came to prominence with Lamb. • College and non-commerial world music campaign to impact on album release. • Double LP includes a four page lyric insert and download card.

SOUL TREASURES FROM THE SILVER FOX LABEL! Formed by Shelby S. Singleton, Jr. and the eponymous platinum-haired brother of Kenny Rogers, Lelan, the short-lived Silver Fox Records unleashed a string of R&B and Soul smashes including Betty LaVette's saucy "Do Your Duty," Detroit chanteuse Gloria Taylor's irresistible rave-up "You Got To Pay The Price," and hard-driving, sizzling grooves from Hank Ballard, Eddy Giles and more. Cut by Kevin Gray, and pressed on gold vinyl at Third Man Pressing! Nashville was a whole lot more than the country music capital of the world during the late '60s and early '70s. When he wasn't busy reviving the long-dormant Sun logo (and enjoying considerable success doing so), Music Row vet Shelby Singleton unleashed a torrent of sizzling southern soul singles on his SSS International label and its affiliate Silver Fox imprint during that same prolific era. This is stone southern soul at its most righteous!

APTLY TITLED FOLLOW UP TO WESTERN UNION! The hits kept on coming from heroic Dallas fivesome The Five Americans with their third longplayer, 1967’s Progressions. Both “Zip Code” and “Evol-Not Love” careened up the charts as The Five Americans squared off on live stages throughout the Deep South with artists such as the Doors and Jefferson Airplane – and more than held their own against the best American rock ‘n’ roll had to offer! With their shouted harmonies and organ-pumping attack, the Oklahoma-by-way-of-Dallas Five Americans beamed their way into the Top 40 in 1966 with the hammering "I See The Light" and again in 1967 with the even bigger blockbuster "Western Union." (The quintet's second LP for Abnak, Western Union/Sound of Love, was produced by rockabilly great Dale Hawkins.) But besides the impossibly infectious "Western Union" and its worthy, communication-themed follow-ups "Zip Code" and "Stop-Light," the Five Americans had much more to offer. By ably covering everything from tender folk rock to Baroque pop-psych – and even tough punk via '67's driving "See-Saw-Man" – it's no wonder the Five Americans have earned the proud salutes of garage fans everywhere. Includes an eye catching OBI strip telling shoppers about this gem!

DOUBLE DRUMMED ACID PSYCH! The sole psychedelic '67 testament by the LSD-inspired L.A. band is a frenzy of double drumming, serpentine acid guitar, crunchy fuzz bass, and carnival-clatter keyboards. Featuring the heavy-on-the-paranoia "Mr. Blue," as well as a bonus track not included on the original LP, and pressed on clear vinyl! The lone release by Los Angeles’ Clear Light, a band that once seemed poised to step through the doors opened by labelmates the Doors, onto the wide-open FM playlists and from there to the top of the charts. Fate decreed otherwise, unfortunately, and Clear Light instead became the stuff that cults are made of. Though this album is their only recorded legacy, the music of Clear Light continues to shine. Psychedelia runs amuck with twin drummers and creamy fuzz guitar. This reissue of their rare self-titled 1967 Elektra debut, produced by Paul Rothchild, features a non-LP bonus track (“She’s Ready To Be Free”) and liner notes that tell Clear Light’s story in full, vivid detail! As the original jacket states, “To fully appreciate the spectacular sound of double drumming in Clear Light, play this record at high volume.”

• BACK IN PRINT WITH A NEW KEVIN GRAY CUT ON CLEAR VINYL! • PACKAGED WITH AN ENLIGHTENING INSERT THAT TELLS THE TALE OF THE BAND! • INCLUDES A DAZZLING BONUS TRACK NOT INCLUDED ON THE ORIGINAL LP!

Originally released just as Jóhann’s star was rising in the world of modern composition, Fordlândia is a beautiful meld of strings and electronics, with two themes running throughout; “This album is like a film with two separate story lines that at first don´t seem to have a lot to do with each other, but actually they do,” said Johann at the time. The idea of failed utopias is the main thread, and the album’s title is a reference to the Fordlândia rubber plantation in Brazil that Henry Ford built with grand plans in the mid-1920s but abandoned after a mere eight years at a huge cost and without a single tire having been produced. The collision of mysticism and rocket science is the other theme explored – made apparent by song titles such as “The Rocket Builder (Lo Pan!)” and “Melodia (Guidelines for a Space Propulsion Device Based on Heim’s Quantum Theory)” – a topic Jóhann was fascinated by at the time of writing this album, keenly studying the leftfield works of John Whiteside Parsons and Burkhard Heim. Previously only available on vinyl as a small run pressed by Jóhann himself on his NTOV label, which has since become highly collectable, this new pressing comes spread across two 180g pieces of black vinyl and housed in a beautiful gatefold sleeve. This pressing has been mastered by Bo Kondren at Calyx and the artwork has been adapted from his original design by Chris Bigg.

East Village are one of the great lost bands, a group whose music has only grown in stature since their premature demise in the spring of 1991. Along with other legendary bands like Big Star and The Action, who also failed to fully stamp their mark whilst active, East Village made pop music that was timeless, but out of step with the musical environment around them. Originally named Episode Four, the band was formed in the mid-1980s by brothers Martin and Paul Kelly in the sleepy Buckinghamshire market town of Princes Risborough just forty miles to the west of London. They were soon joined by Johnny Wood (guitar/vocals) and Spencer Smith (drums) and by 1986 they had forged their brilliant, classic pop sound and recorded their first release, the "Strike Up Matches" EP, which has gone on to become one of the most sought after releases of the C86 era. By 1987 they had renamed themselves East Village and relocated to London where they recorded two EPs for Jeff Barrett's Sub Aqua label. The band gigged extensively through 1988 and 1989, including tours with The House Of Love and McCarthy. The 1989 collapse of Sub Aqua left the band without a label, but they recorded their debut album using money loaned by Bob Stanley, and were soon re-united with Jeff Barrett on his new Heavenly label, releasing their classic single "Circles." Just as interest in the band was building East Village played a sold out show at the New Cross Venue in South London only to end the set by splitting up on stage. The album that followed, "Drop Out" (1993), was mixed and released posthumously on Heavenly and has gone on to be hailed as a classic of its genre. The years that followed saw East Village gain a cult status amongst fans of indie music and prices of original pressings rose rapidly as demand outweighed supply. A singles compilation, "Hotrod Hotel," was released to great acclaim by Summershine in 1994, and now we're very happy to facilitate its first, long overdue, vinyl release.

In the spring of 2019 ShitKid - Åsa Söderqvist and Lina Molarin Ericsson - headed over to the US for a couple of shows at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX but ahead of the festival they managed to squeeze in a couple of days in the studio – first in LA with the legendary the Melvins and then in Austin with Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers. The new album Duo Limbo/”Mellan himmel å helvete” collects the recordings from these two sessions, half of which are ShitKid’s first recordings in their native Swedish – with a set of four songs to start with the band set out to record them in both English and Swedish, clocking in at just over 26 minutes. It’s ShitKid’s finest work yet with the duo backed by an all star line-up of Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on half of the album and Paul Leary and Josh Freese (NIN, Devo, The Replacements etc) on the other half. Press for ShitKid “the musical equivalent of matte black nail polish and thick wing-tipped eyeliner” – The FADER “somewhere between the eternal static-pop cool of Jesus and Mary Chain, the ear-splitting cheer-punk of Sleigh Bells, and the lyrical, pre-apocalyptic doom of early Bauhaus. It’s as intoxicating and chilling as the feeling of wearing a leather jacket and sunglasses for the first time.” – SPIN “outrageously fun and filthy, taking on the acid-infused output of Kyuss or Deap Vally with a real sense of fun ShitKid gets better and better with every outing, and her next steps demand your undivided attention” – The Line of Best Fit ALSO AVAILABLE: PNKSLM063-LP [DETENTION] LP (black 12” vinyl) UPC: 634457820012

SILKWORM

IN THE WEST

"Authentic yet often ineffable greatness that would define Silkworm’s next 11 years of activity, the reissue of In The West is a grand corrective gesture with no expiration date.” - Andrew Earles This definitive 25th anniversary reissue of Silkworm’s acclaimed second album In the West marks its first appearance on vinyl. It has been remixed from the original 2" tape at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini, who engineered the original recording in 1993, and remastered with Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service. Limited to1500 copies worldwide. The revamped cover art is courtesy longtime fellow traveler Mike Hoffman, Jr. Mike repurposed some elements from the original art by Adrian VanEgmond and otherwise operated in the spirit of the original packaging. In addition to the album In The West, supplemental material for this release includes a full-color insert with new liner notes by Silkworm’s Tim Midyett, single-only tracks “Incanduce California” and “In The Bleak Midwinter,” plus a live version of The Dream Syndicate’s “Halloween.” Those join the full album on the package’s enclosed compact disc. Download-only bonuses consist of six previously unheard renditions of songs from In The West recorded direct to DAT in 1991 at Avast! Recording Company in Seattle, six previously unheard live recordings of songs from In The West and a full Silkworm quartet set from March 1993 recorded at Lounge Ax made up almost entirely of songs off In The West. In all, that’s over 2.5 hours of music!

In the West marked a turn. Away from an inspired but developmental sound into something uniquely ours. Scrabbling, lumbering, yelpy, searing. Sorta brutal. Lovely at times. Served more raw than an average ding-dong wants his meat. We hadn’t abdicated from English postpunk. Classic rock. Speed metal (a love of Metallica & Voivod is evident in some of the guitar playing). Certainly not from the American experimental rock milieu we were loosely part of. Through all of that, we found our sound.

tracklisting

1. GARDEN CITY BLUES 2. DUST MY BROOM 3. INTO THE WOODS 4. PUNCH DRUNK FIVE 5. RAISED BY TIGERS 6. INCANDUCE 7. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH 8. PARSONS 9. DREMATE 10. PILOT 11. IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER 12. INCANDUCE CALIFORNIA 13. HALLOWEEN (LIVE AT LOUNGE AX)

I haven’t written a better song than Garden City Blues, which required the full swing of the group to become what it is. Andy’s drilling, chugging weirdness on Dust My Broom and the classic Into the Woods. Joel sets the mark with a realized vision - pile-driving and crushingly beautiful, as heavy as post-punk gets. When he opens up at the end of Dremate that’s not the sound of a person trying to do anything, that’s someone turning himself inside out. A young drummer gets his sea legs. Michael had many masterful performances, maybe the greatest heavy rock drummer of his era. Certainly the best drummer who couldn’t play a double-stroke roll. Here he put it together for the first time, with the excitement of a dog who just figured out how to run. How we navigated this turn intact, I guess it owed a lot to the countless hours we spent together. To commitment. To love. To being idiots. I can’t explain why we did it, much less how. I’m sure many of our peers feel that way. I’m glad it worked out, and I’m glad there’s a definitive version of this record for you to hold in your hands, 25 years later. - Tim Midyett / SKWM RELEASE DATE: January 24th, 2020 LABEL: Comedy Minus One CATALOG: LP-CMO-038X FORMAT: Vinyl 2xLP GENRE: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock LP UPC: 637051380104 FOR FANS OF: Pavement, Joel RL Phelps, Bottomless Pit, Comsat Angels REVELATORY," VITAL" & "FASCINATING" - PITCHFORK (8.1) "SILKWORM’S BROODING STYLE DOESN’T SOUND DATED, BUT IT DOES RUN PARALLEL TO THE ALTERNATIVE PANORAMA OF THE EARLY TO MID 90’S. OUT

BILLIE

There’s something about a Midwestern summertime thunderstorm. Actually, with climate change in the mix, there’s a LOT of somethings about severe weather in the midst of the Great Lakes. In the last few years, the weather around here’s just gotten a little more Extra – just in the past six months we went from wind chills of 50 below to a 100+ heat index, with little to take the edge off other than a good ol’ violent cloudburst. The scent of electricity heralding a welcome break in the oppressive summer heat, backed with violent winds and lightning that could send a tree into your house. It’s deadly and refreshing all at once. Depending on your personality, you may just as likely run out into the maelstrom spinning like a top, or dive for cover into the basement with the dog. Tornadoes, after all. Billie (cmo044), the second full length from Kalamazoo, Michigan’s OUT, is named after one of those dearly departed family pets, and damned if it isn’t a Michigan thunderstorm compressed onto thirty minutes of wax. Ike Turner’s and Chafe Hensley’s guitars crackle, zap, and cut right through the humidity, layering storm clouds while TJ Larmee’s bass rumbles and Mark Larmee’s drums crack and boom. Engineer Mike Roche turned the band’s vocals into rain, washing over the proceedings with heavenly cleansing power. Just listento Hensley hang onto the notes during “Still Talking Wrong” and see if you’re not suddenly reaching upward like Andy Dufresne just crawled out of prison. Billie covers a lot of thematic, stormy territory, violent, heavy, and exhilarating at once – health scares; departed friends; the trials of living with a (loving) partner for the last 16years; relatives who still say awful garbage at holiday dinners; a brave friend who put it all on the line one fateful night out on the plains; gettin’ wild when kids are out of the house. All manner of pox and canker. But for all the gloom and doom and drama, there’s just as much sunlight cutting through the clouds and the thunder and lightning. Heck, lightning can kill, but it’s also awesome, right? The crazy thing is, when you see OUT live, you might find yourself shouting along with a refrain like “who’s feeling like dirt?” but you’ll also find yourself grinning like a fool while you’re doing it. It’s how they roll—as Brian Schill wrote about OUT’s debut, Swim Buddies, in Agricouture, “each of the eleven tracks is simultaneously fist-pumping and bleak – just right for the America to come – [to] engage in what Judith Butler once called the ‘politics of despair.” Yes indeed, there’s levity and joy in these songs, and it’s not just a “haha we’re doomed” nihilistic glee, either – by drenching themselves in the torrential downpour of life’s madness, be it cancer or climate change, OUT remind us all just how awesomely wonderful life can be. Sure, album closer “You Sure Are Strong” may exclaim “we’ll all drown,” but that just drives home how precious that time out in the rain can be before it washes us away. Between the basement and the storm, I think I’d rather spin like a top outside and get wet.

OOGBOGO

S/T Broken Book Hot Rock Tower’s Coyote Loves the City at Night

GOD#017 12”EP Release Date: January 17, 2020 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE OR AUSTRALIA, GOD? WANTS YOU TO SEND OOGBOGO EVERYWHERE ELSE, ALL AROUND THE WORLD

What will the rock of the future sound like? Perhaps fusions will continue to hybridize as social and environmental conditions deteriorate until we’re dancing to abstract alien tones meant to compulsively trigger pleasure points while omitting any emotional triggers because life is so tragic! Who knows, but as long as we’ve got new stuff like “Oogbogo”, the future can wait! This music was birthed out of Kevin Boog, alone with a 4-track cassette recorder, writing and recording to keep busy between tours with Meatbodies. It was a good outlet for ideas that didn’t fit anywhere else, and without the thought or intention of making a record, it became a bit of a weirdo catharsis. That’s probably why its such a fun, weird record, shifting speeds, chopping up and blending new wave, funk, and glam styles in an acid-wash with full production wack, making up a set of truly beyond out-there pop songs. The lyrics get heavy at times — like, ego death, the human race’s condemnation of Earth — with a strong dose of “in my room”’ existential remove. That’s just good rock and roll lyrics — and then they’re rolled into the tracks like any other texture. Ultimately democratic, and this time, democracy wins. It’s just four songs, but “Oogbogo” has an arc from top to bottom, from cover to groove, at peace and expressing it’s jumbled innards — codices mixed for anyone’s interpretation. Working tactically backwards, the live Oogbogo is a real live band, with Mike Kriebel and Thomas Alvarez from around the way. Inspired to jam by the sudden existence of a record, they’re bound to have an incalculable effect on Oogbogo. And there you have it! If you’re interested in the future of sound, or just want something to trip out to, try Oogbogo.

DAN DEACON MYSTIC FAMILIAR OVERVIEW Dan Deacon, composer and performer, returns with his new studio album, Mystic Familiar. Following 2015’s Gliss Riffer, Dan embarked on a whirlwind of collaborative projects, scoring eight films, including Rat Film and Time Trial; collaborating with choreographer Justin Peck on dance piece The Times Are Racing; producing and co-writing with Ed Schrader’s Music Beat; and performing with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. While fulfilling, these projects all lacked one instrument: Dan’s voice. During this time, solo writing became his personal oasis, taking on an exploratory new direction informed by his newly adopted therapeutic practices of self-compassion and mindfulness, daily prompts from Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, and meditation to access an inner well of creativity as discussed by David Lynch in Catching the Big Fish. The result is Mystic Familiar, 11 kaleidoscopic tracks of majestic synth-pop, and Dan Deacon’s first record in which each song is built around a single thematic throughline. The titular character, the Mystic Familiar: a supernatural other being that we carry with us everywhere in our head, which only we can hear and with whom we live our lives in eternal conversation. These are songs that wield the profundity of a philosopher and the absurdity of a court jester, painting life as a psychedelic journey brimming with bliss and disruption, darkness and light. At once Dan’s most emotionally open record and his most transcendent, Mystic Familiar goes far beyond where his music has traveled before.

POLIÇA

When We Stay Alive

STREET DATE: 31 JANUARY 2020 When Poliça’s Channy Leaneagh fell off her roof while clearing ice in early 2018, she smashed her L1 vertebrae and battered her spine, leaving her in a brace with limited mobility for months. Yet Poliça’s fourth album, When We Stay Alive, is not about one debilitating accident. It’s about the redemptive power of rewriting your story in order to heal, and reclaiming your identity as a result. When We Stay Alive possesses a new confidence in its sound, reflected in its fierce, determined songs and anchored by the heavy synths and punctuating beats of Poliça co-founder and producer Ryan Olson. Over the last several years Olson and Leaneagh have widely collaborated with musicians from all over the world: both with Bon Iver, and Leaneagh individually with Boys Noize, Lane 8, Sasha, Leftfield, and Daniel Wohl; Olson with Swamp Dogg in addition to countless musicians from the Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon’s 37d03d collective. As a result, When We Stay Alive features one of the largest musical casts of any Poliça record to date. To create the album, Olson brought his favorite collaborators into his studio for all-night sessions. He’d then send Leaneagh the files to write lyrics to while recovering at home, which she’d record alone or with engineer Alex Proctor. Drummers Drew Christopherson and Ben Ivascu colored the songs with a new approach – drastically changing the rhythmic dynamic from previous efforts by creating an indistinguishable hybrid of live and electronic instrumentation--and bassist Chris Bierden provided a melody-laden low-end as well as more layered backing vocals than ever before.

On Poliça’s first three albums, Leaneagh focused on restructuring the world and her relationships within it. On When We Stay Alive, she realizes the power in restructuring her inner self. The album’s title references the idea of moving forward through life – our experiences, both good and bad – and what happens next with the strength we find. “I had been living unconsciously in past trauma,” Leaneagh says. “I don’t want to deny something happened – this is not about repression – it’s about taking the power back from the past, holding the power in the present, and creating a new story for myself.”

OVERVIEW After a 5 year hiatus that has seen him delve into a range of diverse musical projects, Squarepusher will return with new album, Be Up A Hello. After exciting fans with his hour long mix of brain-melting breakbeat and jungle for Warp’s 30th anniversary NTS takeover in June, expectation has been bubbling away for official new material. The album sees Tom Jenkinson getting back to using analogue hardware, the same equipment that first helped him develop his sound in the early ‘90’s to craft nine new pieces which chart a journey into harder and darker territory. From rinsing breakbeat tracks such as Nervelevers and Terminal Slam to darker moments such as Vortrack and Mekrev Bass, the album illustrates Tom’s continuing fascination with finely balanced psychological overload. As such, “Be Up A Hello” gives a nod to the mayhem, joyousness and abandon of the DIY Essex rave scene that was a strong determinant in Tom’s work.

TRACK LISTING 1. Piltdown Man 2. Your Reply 3. Rare Thing 4. Detroit Lake 5. A Secret 6. Went to LA 7. Lean 8. Now That I'm Back 9. Carry the Zero

• Debut solo album from Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan • Indie Exclusive vinyl limited to 700 copies pressed on pink vinyl. • LP includes digital download.

"an expertly narrative songwriter and a peerless singer in the indie-rock world" – NPR "It’s Frances Quinlan like you’ve never heard her before, but also unmistakably the work of no one else." – Brooklyn Vegan “We should try again to talk,” Frances Quinlan writes. It not just a lyric—it’s a suggestion, a warning, a plea, a wish. This request is woven throughout Likewise, her forthcoming solo album, amidst dramatically shifting motifs. Some are jubilant, some are dreamy and abstract, and a few are sinister, but within each dark void that Quinlan explores, there is a light peering back at her. Frances Quinlan has built an identity for herself over the past decade as the lead songwriter and front-woman of the Philadelphia-based band Hop Along, and her distinct voice is among the most recognizable and inimitable in music. While the band began as Quinlan's solo project (originally titled Hop Along, Queen Ansleis), Likewise (out January 31st on Saddle Creek) is Quinlan's debut under her own name. To make the record, she enlisted the virtuosic skills of her bandmate Joe Reinhart, and together they produced the album at his studio, The Headroom, recording in stints over the course of a year. With a renewed openness to explore different sounds, Quinlan supplements her typical guitar-based instrumentation with synthesizers, digital beats, harps, strings, and a wide variety of keyboards. The shifting and exploratory nature of these musical arrangements allow her lyrics and vocals—which have always been at the forefront of her music—to reach emotional depths like never before. Her vocal tones beckon a kaleidoscopic range of emotions across all nine songs on the album, from soft and ruminative to enraged and commanding; from conveying powerful messages to highlighting small, yet poignant, moments. Quinlan is a voyaging songwriter. Throughout Likewise, she confronts what confounds her in the hopes that she will come out on the other side with a better sense of what it is to be human. She presents listeners with a complicated, albeit spirited vision of what it could mean to truly engage with another person, to give a small piece of oneself over to someone else without expectation. Although such is likely to be a lifelong effort, these songs prove evident that light can still permeate from unsettling depths. LP (Single LP jacket)

Real Gone Music grants the wishes of record collectors and TV fans worldwide by releasing, for the first time ever on CD and for the first time on vinyl since its original issue in 1967, the only album Barbara Eden ever recorded! As you can tell from the cover, she made the record at the height of her fame starring in the TV comedy I Dream of Jeannie, her huge break which came after years of appearing in such series as How to Marry a Millionaire, Burke’s Law, and Route 66 and in films like 7 Faces of Dr. Lao and Flaming Star (opposite Elvis Presley). So, one could be excused from going into this album thinking that Barbara’s chops were more on the acting than the musical side. But she got her start performing while singing in the church choir, and studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music long before the camera found her. She subsequently headlined on stage in Las Vegas and appeared in TV music-variety shows and specials as well. So, Miss Barbara Eden is not just a highly sought-after curio from the long career of a TV icon but an irresistible pop platter in its own right! With Bill Justis conducting and arranging, and songs by Bill Anderson and Ted Daffan among others, there’s a little bit of a country tinge, but it’s definitely not of the cry-in-your-beer variety as Barbara keeps things light and lissome while offering plenty of personality along with the pipes. For our money, the stand-out track is the last one, “Bend It,” which belongs (complete with sitar…it is 1967, after all!) in the bubblegum hall of fame right up there with “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.” Our CD reissue includes copious photos and notes by Joe Marchese with fresh quotes from Barbara herself, while our LP reissue comes in pink vinyl limited to 1000 copies. One more note on the LP: we’re releasing it at 45 r.p.m. to ensure maximum fidelity to “the master” (wink, wink). Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision…another Real Gone find!

Poet, writer, performer, songwriter, singer, producer, actor—Rod McKuen was the true Renaissance man of the ‘60s generation. His songs were performed by everyone from Johnny Cash to Frank Sinatra to Barbra Streisand. However, despite having notched a number of popular albums, much of McKuen’s recorded work has remained out of print. Now, Real Gone Music is releasing two key albums for folks to rediscover in these similarly turbulent times: an expanded Greatest Hits record and his most popular (and best) Warner Bros. studio album, New Ballads!

ROD McKUEN: Greatest Hits of Rod McKuen (Expanded Edition) Rod’s 1969 Greatest Hits release didn’t exactly just feature his greatest hits. Instead of the usual music biz cash-in strategy of lifting songs from preceding albums to create a best-of, Rod—ever the artistic striver—chose his most popular songs to re-record with new arrangements with Arthur Greenslade. His unconventional move paid off with a gold record, which we at Real Gone have supplemented with six bonus tracks from earlier and later sessions to create a fully fleshed-out portrait of the singer-songwriter-performer. McKuen fans can recite many of the lyrics to these songs; the spoken word piece “Stanyan Street;” “The Ivy That Clings to the Wall,” first heard in the 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie; “The Lovers,” which Jacques Brel translated and recorded; “Lonesome Cities,” later covered by Frank Sinatra on his all-McKuen album; “Seasons in the Sun,” which Terry Jacks took to #1; “If You Go Away,” which was performed by everybody from Dusty Springfield to Tom Jones to Brenda Lee; and, among the bonus tracks, “Jean,” which Oliver Swofford took to #2 on the charts in 1969. McKuen biographer Barry Alfonso contributes insightful liner notes, with copious photos and a new remastering by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. The place to dive into the McKuen discography!

ROD McKUEN: New Ballads Rod attained new artistic heights with his 1970 release New Ballads. It’s a masterful collaboration with ace arranger Don Costa, whose subdued, sublime instrumentation sets the perfect tone for McKuen’s intimate, romantic musical ruminations. Among the highlights is one of Rod’s celebrated collaborations with Jacques Brel, “I’m Not Afraid,” while “As I Love My Own” is a signature McKuen exploration of the tension between love and lust, set to his beloved nature imagery. New Ballads was the highest charting of Rod’s studio albums during his decade with Warner Bros., and rightly so…it’s arguably the most consistent and coherent of all of his collections, and sets quite the mood. Joe Marchese contributes liner notes to this CD debut, punctuated by period photos. Newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision…wear headphones for the full effect!

CHARLES WRIGHT & THE WATTS 103RD STREET RHYTHM BAND EXPRESS YOURSELF (LIMITED & REMASTERED BROWN VINYL EDITION) STREET DATE: JANUARY 31, 2020 The hit title track alone makes this 1970 release worth having, but it’s the other cuts on this record that make it one of the greatest psychedelic soul/funk albums of all time. Charles Wright’s beautiful falsetto kicks off the opening track (and #16 pop hit) “Love Land,” in which this L.A. band takes a page from Philly soul, and “I Got Love,” with its oh-so-funky descending bass line, is a stone groove. But the fun really starts with the first slice of “High as Apple Pie,” which offers just the first six minutes of what turns out to be a 23-minute jam. Adventurous production touches, loose-limbed arrangements, and a bit of old-time gospel make this the love child of Dr. John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters,” James Brown, Sly Stone, and the Chambers Brothers’ “Time Has Come Today” (and you can bet George Clinton listened long and hard to this record)! In 2009, Randall Bramblett released the critically acclaimed album The Meantime via his Blue Ceiling label. The recording marked a departure for the highly acclaimed multi-instrumentalist who is best known for his contributions on saxophone with Steve Winwood, Traffic, Levon Helm, Sea Level, Widespread Panic and more. The CD was produced by Bramblett, who performs primarily on acoustic piano, organ, and lead vocals. The CD features 12 original tracks, including some of Bramblett’s earliest songs such as “Sacred Harmony,” “Witness For Love,” and “One More Rose” as well as newer, unreleased compositions. Now, 10 years later, New West Records is proud to reissue The Meantime (10th Anniversary Edition) on CD and deluxe edition vinyl. Spread across two discs, the record features the original The Meantime tracklist as well as two unreleased bonus tracks. “Bramblett’s latest features him sitting down at a grand piano and taking things slow and easy. The dozen original tracks come from all periods of his career, but share in common an emphasis on pretty melodies and unhurried tempos.” - Pop Matters A sultry blend of ambient folk, jazz, traditional piano and seductive vocals, the music on The Meantime is downright romantic and mesmerizing in the vein of Norah Jones or The Blue Nile. - Jambase.com

ROSS GOLDSTEIN T I M O K

A

‘Timoka’ is an all instrumental album from Ross Goldstein featuring 11 compositions created using a Mellotron exclusively. It is a companion piece (volume 2) to ‘The 8th House’ and like that album it is inspired by cinema and film soundtracks While plenty of homage has been paid to the anxiety-heavy synthy soundtracks of 70’s b-movie horror flicks or the acid rock freak outs that soundtracked movies from the early days hippie subculture, The Eighth House goes in a very different direction. More than those popular entry points, the music here is subdued and slow-moving, curiously inspecting ideas as the album moves through various fantastical passages. Even when cartoonish sound effects meet with tense swells of strings or dramatic orchestral flourishes (early Chamberlin models recorded their sounds using players of the Lawrence Welk Orchestra, no less!), the result is never garish but always patient and communicative. Bells ring in the distance, memories and possibilities are implied but left open to interpretation and strange but friendly sounds linger for just a moment before melting into something else. The result is a muted and wintery paradise that envisions Smile-era Brian Wilson scoring the softer moments of a Jodorowsky film.

Tracklisting 1. Channeling 2. Reality Rounds 3. King of Thumbs 4. Atoms 5. In Silence, In Cold 6. Vesper 7. Channeling II 8. God Rays 9. God Rays II 10. Rills

After years of experimenting with electronic vocal effects to extend the capabilities of the voice, Irish composer Alex Dowling has released his debut album, Reality Rounds, on Carrier Records. Written for ‘AutoTune choir’, the work was performed live by four singers, each controlling their own vocal effects in real-time. The innovative use of effects allows for a stunning array of sounds from rapid flickering textures to unusual tunings that would be impossible for a normal choir to sing. Breaths build into propulsive rhythms by imprinting amplitude modulation on the singers’ voices (Channeling II) and two-voice hocketing with delayed harmonizers forms complex interlocking patterns (God Rays). Influenced by the writings of Yuval Noah Harari, Reality Rounds is a future ritual of ‘Dataism’, a new religion that worships the eternal flow of data. The performers’ voices are digitally extended beyond their physical boundaries allowing them to connect with the information stream and become imbued with its spiritual presence. The style could be described as ‘absurd melancholy’, with obscure references and non-sequiturs weaving in amongst this deliberate, solemn ceremony. Dowling deftly combines the voice with electronics creating hybrid timbres that traverse the liminal space between organic and synthetic. The digital processes never mask the singers’ fragility, always allowing a fleshy human side to offset any electronic austerity. Deep bass growls rumble underneath angelic counterpoint while rippling waves of sound morph into subtle whistling and breaths. A fascinating cross between Stockhausen’s 'Stimmung', an electro-futuristic Meredith Monk, and a digitally rendered Roomful of Teeth, this album attains a rare feat – the creation of truly live, human, electronic music.

OutsideIn is the second portrait disc of English composer Alex Hills to be released on Carrier Records. The first, The Music of Making Strange, led to Tempo Magazine describing him as ‘a composer of interesting and considerable gifts’, and was featured on Alex Ross’s The Rest is Noise blog. The music takes inspiration from E A Abbott’s seminal piece of C19th science fiction ‘Flatland’, which imagines a world with only two dimensions. Alex’s work explores similarly extreme restrictions of musical dimensions, trapping the harmony in narrow spaces and the instruments in short, sample-like, gestures. Out of this comes music which is directed and focused, but also rich and at times unsettlingly intense. OutsideIn features some of the most exciting performers of new music working today, including virtuoso violinist Aisha Orazbayeva and the vocal ensemble EXAUDI.

HAUSU MOUNTAIN

Long Distance Poison is the Brooklyn-based ambient/ drone synth duo of Nathan Cearley and Erica Bradbury.

Artist: Long Distance Poison Album: Technical Mentality

Label: Hausu Mountain Cat#: HAUSMO101 Formats: Cassette 6 34457 00726 0 Release Date: 01/31/20 (click album art to stream)

RIYL: Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, Éliane Radigue, M. Geddes Gengras, Terry Riley, Yoshi Wada, Oneohtrix Point Never, Pauline Oliveros, Tim Hecker C38 - Orange tape with black imprints. Artwork by HausMo Max. Debut of new HausMo logo! “Over the course of more than a dozen cassettes and LPs, as well as numerous performances at underground venues and experimental music festivals, they’ve forged a distinct aesthetic which recalls ‘70s kosmische and sci-fi/horror soundtracks without being derivative. It’s absolutely necessary for them to take around 10 or 20 minutes for each composition in order to establish an atmosphere, and allow unexpected noises and tonal shifts to emerge.” - All Music Guide “It’s a noisier, more intricately layered composition, but the album’s defining sci-fi goofiness is still present. If anything, the combination of white noise, analog synthesizer beeps and a general disregard of form makes it feel all the more alien. Knock Magh may not be the wackiest Hausu Mountain release this year— look towards Fire-Toolz for that—but it’s one of the subtlest, sliest and strongest.” - Slug Mag “… sets itself apart from other ambient releases in that it is minimal at heart, but somewhat maximal in fruition. Negative space dominates, but is nicely accented by haunting synth lines, and percussion that sounds like it’s sneaking up on you. If David Robert Mitchell ever makes another horror movie, he should seriously consider enlisting Long Distance Poison for the score.” - Spin

Technical Mentality, their third release on Hausu Mountain, follows Lama Nada (HAUSMO40, 2015) and Knock Magh (HAUSMO75, 2018), and joins a catalog of releases on labels like Constellation Tatsu, and Ecstatic Peace!, Deep Distance. The album continues the duo’s exploration of extended, transportive synth sessions sculpted from Cearley’s modular systems and Bradbury’s keyboards and analog gear. While Lama Nada floated through thick passages of drone and Knock Magh jittered with discordant fragments of sub-oceanic foley, Technical Mentality presents swathes of nearly empty space colored in piece by piece with slow-brooding chordal synth voices. The album highlights the specificity and fine-grain detail of the duo’s electronic tableaus, as each patch and understated melody receives its own room to swell and complicate against a desolate backdrop. Long Distance Poison generates tension and narrative flux by contrasting dissonant spreads of alien tone against moments of striking harmonic complexity. The textures on display range from smeared synthetic washes to crunched, distorted tones, to segments of glistening arpeggios that inch closer to the precedent of Berlin School synthesis. Drawing inspiration from the inhuman aesthetics of early computing technology as much as the beatific grandeur of nature, Long Distance Poison splits the difference between environmental world building and the cold, increasingly familiar internal architecture of the technological era. Technical Mentality features two sidelong pieces that evolve through a network of distinct moods and levels of density. Slow vortices of standing tone swell into tiered lattices of chiming melody, as if to unearth some evidence of living tissue in the ruins of a future wasteland. Elements hit the mix that land somewhere between conventional notes and abstracted textures, blurring the line between implied harmonic systems and the pure act of gazing into the abyss. When the duo chooses to ramp up the level of activity and introduce attendant layers in the haze, they lock into rhythmic grids that sketch out slow chord progressions and fluctuating melodic patterns. At other moments, the tones they present seem to mimic timbres inherent to the industrial and digital eras: the whirring of machines at the end of a factory shift, the clustered tonal ring of a device in an empty room, the last wail of a dial up modem before its replacement. Long Distance Poison strips the notion of humanand-machine symbiosis of the discernible markers of instrumental performance. Instead, they present a hollowed out quasi-reality where only a spiritual afterimage of human presence remains.
