Back in October 2009, Strut’s Inspiration Information series was in full swing. Following an acclaimed collaboration between Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics, Finnish maverick Jimi Tenor hit the studio for a mouth-watering head to head with Afrobeat drumming legend, Tony Allen. Tenor had already built a reputation as a fascinating enigma in modern day music. Consistently one of the most inspired and unpredictable live artists around, his work since his breakthrough album ‘Intervision’ (Warp, 1997) had involved open-minded projects ranging from live film soundtracks and orchestral pieces to a series of Afro-based albums with his band Kabu Kabu. Enjoying a burgeoning revival, Tony Allen had continued to attract new fans. Celebrated as the creator of the Afrobeat rhythm and a lynchpin of Fela Kuti’s Africa 70 band, his work at the time of this recording had included the first album as The Good, The Bad & The Queen with Damon Albarn and his debut recording for World Circuit Records, ‘Secret Agent’. Recorded at Lovelite Studios in Berlin during November 2008 with further sessions in Finland and Paris, the Tenor / Allen collaboration whipped up a raw, heavy analogue sound mixing the full range of Allen’s Afrobeat repertoire with Tenor’s off-kilter brew of dark humour, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and tight, firing musicianship. The sessions involved key members of Tenor’s Kabu Kabu band and Berlin-based guest MC Allonymous with tracks evolving naturally from jamming ideas together over five intense days of recording, fuelled by plenty of African food and whisky. Tenor’s trademark range of home-made instruments rubbed shoulders with vintage keyboards and traditional African percussion. The resulting set became one of the best recordings that both artists produced during this period. Tracks range from Jimi’s S&M tableau, ‘Darker Side of Night’ to the apocalyptic commentary on our times, ‘Path To Wisdom’ and the hilarious lampooning of the UK immigration system, ‘Mama England’, composed on the Tenor tour bus. The album also featured fusions based around more traditional low-slung Afrobeat structures (‘Sinuhe’, ‘Got My Egusi’) and ended with the epic freestyle juggernaut, ‘Three Continents’, a life affirming, mesmeric groove built around another rough-as-nails Allenko rhythm base. 'Inspiration Information: Jimi Tenor / Tony Allen' is re-released on 22nd January 2021 and is dedicated to the memory of the great, incomparable Tony Allen.

Cuba: Music and Revolution: Culture Clash in Havana: Experiments in Latin Music 1975-85 Vol. 1 is a new album compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records) that explores the many new styles that emerged in Cuba in the 1970s as Jazz, Funk, Brazilian Tropicalia and even Disco mixed together with Latin and Salsa on the island as Cuban artists experimented with new musical forms created in the unique socialist state. The album comes as a heavyweight triple vinyl and deluxe double CD, complete with extensive sleeve notes, and is jam-packed with heavy bass lines, synth and Wah-Wah guitar funk combined with the heavyweight percussion, powerful brass lines and the all-encompassing Latin rhythms of Cuban music known throughout the world. The album is released to coincide with the massive new deluxe large format book Cuba: Music and Revolution: Original Cover Art of Cuban Music: Record Sleeve Designs of Revolutionary Cuba 1959-90, published in November, which is also compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker (Soul Jazz Records), and which features the music and record designs of Cuba, made in the 30-year period following the Cuban Revolution. The music on this album features legendary Cuban groups such as Irakere, Los Van Van and Pablo Milanés as well as a host of lesser known artists such as the radical Grupo De Experimentación, Juan Pablo Torres and Algo Nuevo, Grupo Monumental and Orquesta Ritmo Oriental, groups whose names remain largely unknown outside of Cuba owing to the now 60-year old US trade embargo which remains in place today and which prevents trade with Cuba – and thus most Cuban records were only ever available in Cuba or in ex-Soviet Union states. The music on this album reflects the most cutting-edge of Cuban groups that were recording in Cuba in the 1970s and 1980s – who were all searching for a new Cuban identity and new musical forms that reflected both the Afro-Cuban cultural heritage of a nation that gave birth to Latin music – and its new position as a socialist state. Most of the music featured on this album has never been heard outside of Cuba. Cuba: Music and Revolution is the third book that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker have collaborated on together and follows on from their two earlier critically acclaimed books, Freedom, Rhythm and Sound (Revolutionary Jazz Music in the 1960s and 1970s) and Bossa Nova and the Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s, both of which also had related album releases on Soul Jazz Records. Both Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker have been involved in Cuban music for more than two decades – Gilles Peterson with his many Havana Cultura projects for his Brownswood label and Stuart Baker with a number of Soul Jazz Records albums recorded in Cuba. The Carrboro, NC supergroup Speed Stick is an ever-evolving project among a group of friends—Ash Bowie (Polvo), Charles Chace (The Paul Swest), Laura King (Bat Fangs), and Thomas Simpson (The Love Language)—whose musical achievements reach back as far as the 1990s. But as its live shows attest, the band does not want to rehearse old accomplishments. On stage, Speed Stick wants to shatter epochs. Step into a world of thunder where lighting strikes rewire nervous systems. Ride waves with peaks that precede disquieting calms. Float in spaces where dark and light collide to set blood afire. To participate in a Speed Stick show is to enter a space of bodily and psychological endurance. Off-kilter guitar riffs shadow the raging intensity of drums; blistering drum beats dance to the feedback of guitars. The songs for Volume One were created in unusual fashion over the course of a year. Initially, Speed Stick only consisted of two drummers. They distributed nine studio tracks and a single live track to select musicians. The musicians’ task was simple: draw inspiration from the beats in order to create music that spreads laterally and horizontally like a rhizome. Indeed, Volume One has utterly discarded the yoke of genre by instead tethering intricate, interlocking drums to myriad creative personalities: Mac McCaughan (Superchunk), Kelley Deal (The Breeders, R. Ring), Mike Montgomery (R. Ring), Stuart McLamb (The Love Language). But no one can stop with just the album. Your ears will yearn to see the shapes of sound and your eyes will beg to taste color. For what Volume One heralds is that the supergroup Speed Stick is the super show of shows.

When we first put out Nada Surf’s beloved The Weight Is A Gift, we released a double-disc limited edition version of the album at indie retail and, lo and behold, it looks like we misplaced a few boxes of them. So now, in celebration of the 15th anniversary of The Weight Is A Gift, we are excited to make them available once again for the last time. The Weight Is A Gift, Nada Surf's sharp, compact, and brilliant follow-up to their acclaimed 2003 masterpiece Let Go, was produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, The Thermals) and included the hit single “Always Love” and other fan-favorites such as “Do It Again”, “Your Legs Grow”, “Blankest Year” and more. Like Let Go, the album would become a classic. Recorded and mixed in Sweden over the course of three days with a selection of musicians Winqvist had brought together, including Peter Morén (Peter, Bjorn & John) and Cecilia Österholm (one of Sweden’s best-known nyckelharpa players). The studio approach with The Second Hand Orchestra was entirely improvised around Yorkston’s songs, and the only song they heard in advance was “Ella Mary Leather”; Yorkston didn’t want to direct anyone too much, but instead allowed for a welcoming, instinctive, free-spirited and joyful atmosphere. The resulting album, The Wide, Wide River, is a soothing, warm and sublime listen, whilst also highlighting Yorkston’s skills for songwriting, collaboration and as a musical conductor.

On this record Daniel takes a bold and surprising new direction, moving beyond simple plunderphonic sampling and opening up a genuine dialogue with other musicians, Daniel left room in his compositions for moments of genuine surprise, capturing the freeform, communal energy of a DJ set or live improvisation session more than a recording project. It feels ethereal but full, both ambiently hypnotic, and deliciously danceable. Shall We Go On Sinning… began as an emotional response to the creeping rise of fascism around the globe. Daniel explains: “The election of Donald Trump made me feel very angry and sad, but I didn’t want to make ‘angry white guy’ music in a purely reactive mode. I felt that I needed to make music through a different process, and to a different emotional outcome, to get past a private feeling of powerlessness by making musical connections with friends and people I admire, to make something that felt socially extended and affirming.” Those musical connections make this record what it is; vocals provided by the chorus of Colin Self, Angel Deradoorian and Jana Hunter form the foundation of most of the tracks, sometimes left unchanged as with opening line (“Shall”) or the sensuous R&B refrains on “We”, other times shrouded in effects, morphing into new forms. Stately piano melodies written by Daniel’s partner M.C. Schmidt as well as Koye Berry alongside entrancing vibraphone and percussion patterns from Sarah Hennies push tracks toward ecstatic and melodic peaks, while rich saxophone textures played by Andrew Bernstein (Horse Lords) and John Berndt are used to add color and texture throughout. The album’s overall sound was in part shaped by Daniel hosting Mitchell Brown of GASP during Maryland Deathfest. Daniel borrowed Brown’s Roland Space Echo tape unit which he then used extensively throughout to give the album a flickering, ethereal quality. The melodies, jubilance, and meditative nature of album provides a muchneeded escape from the contemporary hell-scape. The process of creating Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase?, in and of itself, is the Soft Pink Truth’s way of championing creativity and community over rage and nihilism.

As any touring musician knows, an inordinate amount of the day is spent waiting around - especially just before soundcheck. There’s nothing specific for you to do, but you can’t really leave, either. You definitely don’t want to be the one that nobody can find when it’s finally time to get on stage. Over the course of a whole tour, this dead time can add up to hours and hours of wasted existence, filled with mindless gazing at your phone and listlessly pecking at the hummus plate in the dressing room. This is time you will never get back. In late 2015, I found myself in Europe, having already spent nearly the entirety of the year on the road, and this growing void of lost time was weighing heavily on me. I wondered: was it possible to use these intervals for something productive? I came up with a plan: every day, no matter where I was or how motivated I felt, I would spend that time improvising on my guitar and recording it. I’d recently cobbled together a looping setup with my pedalboard that seemed like a good medium to experiment with. And so, for three weeks across the EU, I would dutifully set my equipment up each day and record whatever came to mind for 30 to 60 minutes. By the time I returned home to Oregon, I’d amassed over ten hours of material - much of it aimless, but some of it quite compelling. With the aid of the kind ears of some close friends, I whittled it down to the length of a record, and that’s how Europa came to be. I’m writing these words in April 2020, at home under quarantine as a pandemic continues to shut down the world in strange and frightening ways. It’s odd and melancholy to listen to this music now. In some sense it’s a communication from a simpler time, before Brexit, before the 2016 election, from a seemingly kinder world, a world with open borders and live music. Following on from 2016's "Wordless Wonder" LP and 2017's "Frank Infatuation" single, Minneapolis' Real Numbers are back with a brand new EP entitled "Brighter Then." In the interim the combo has expanded to a 5-piece, adding Sophie Durbin on keyboards. "Brighter Then" was recorded over winter 2019/2020 and shows the band journeying deeper into late 80's indiepop than ever before.
The lyrics on the EP see Eli Hansen take a more personal and introspective tack revolving around relationships, shifting perspectives, and memories. The title track, which has been crafted slowly over the last few years around its circular lead, tackles the subject of evolving friendships - losses, gains and the acceptance of the present - and channels Sarah favorites The Wake and Brighter.
"Old Cross" and "In The End" were co-authored by Eli and Cameron Soojian and feature Cam's distinctive lead guitar, while "Darling" is nothing short of a pure pop gem. The EP's production finds the band at their most crisp thanks to Matt Castore and his A Harder Commune studios, and the 45rpm 12" vinyl pressing showcases the tunes at their best. While never straying too far from their scrappy DIY roots, Real Numbers have broadened their sound with assurance, and fans of Felt and the Field Mice will be pleased with the results. Esbjörn Svensson Trio wass a swedish phenomenon. Their take on the tradi�onal pianodriven triojazz was always something else. The music moved over the years into all direc�ons, almost invented a genre of their own! HAMIET BLUIETT – BEARER OF THE HOLY FLAME Strut present the first ever international reissue of a live session for Black Fire by the late, hugely respected baritone saxman and flautist, Hamiet Bluiett, ‘Bearer Of The Holy Flame’, recorded at Sweet Basil in New York in July 1983. Inspired by Harry Carney from Duke Ellington’s band, who had played the baritone as a soloist, Bluiett played with Sam Rivers’ ensemble and famously joined the Charles Mingus Quintet in New York from 1969, touring Europe and appearing on ‘Mingus At Carnegie Hall’. He then started out as a bandleader in 1975, building from work he had started in St. Louis as a co-founder of the influential Black Artists’ Group, a collective dedicated to new work in theatre, visual arts, dance, spoken word, film and music. He went on to form the World Saxophone Quartet alongside former B.A.G. members Julius Hemphill and Oliver Lake and multi-instrumentalist David Murray. Championing the baritone throughout his life, he became a go-to player for many of the biggest artists in jazz and R&B, performing with Babatunde Olatunji, Abdullah Ibrahim, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. One of the few live sessions released on Black Fire, ‘Bearer Of The Holy Flame’ was originally released on Black Fire on CD in 1994, eleven years after being recorded, and is best known for a storming version of Wayne Shorter’s ‘Footprints’. ANDRÉE BURELLI DE SIDERA “This is the first time I have lived in Italy since I was fifteen,” says experimental electronic musician Andrée Burelli - who previously performed as Bodyverse. She’s musing on the inspirations of her patient, nurturing new album De Sidera - “and I am overwhelmed by the beauty of its nature, landscapes, and cultural roots.” Having temporarily moved from Berlin to Sardinia in her native Italy to record music between 2019 and 2020 (she was born in Venice) - the mediterranean has taken on renewed significance. De Sidera is Burelli’s first album with Italian titles, written and recorded in Italy, inspired by the land she inhabited at the time of recording. Though any and all vocals on De Sidera are wordless, language is central to the album. “I try to make my vocalisms sound like words,” she explains, “but it is a kind of invented language. Somehow the form, the signifier, is enough to express meaning, sense, emotion.” Burelli notes that this concept has
resonance with her practice in Greek and Turkish music, in which wordless vocals and instrumental improvisations are common. This is front and center on a song like the title track “De Sidera,” where Burelli’s rising and falling vocals dance atop an undulating, contemplative bassline - close your eyes, and the clear tides of the Mediterranean lap at the sand - her wordless intonations guiding you to a tranquil state. Burelli remarks that the songs with singing are full productions - “De Sidera” and “Cum Sidera,” but there are also compositions that came from improvisation - the love and usage of looping emerging from her studies in tabla and Hindustani classical music. Songs like “Mediterraneo” and “Cuore Di Piume” are fully loop-based, slowly adding shimmering, melodic layers as the compositions unfold. Others like “Natura Domina” are glacial musings, spilling gentle melodies and cascading piano sounds across the compositions.

De Sidera was conscientiously composed and recorded in a confined area, one surrounded by natural wonder - perhaps because of that it is especially introspective, considering Burelli’s place in her mother landscape. “I closed myself in a special, intimate, creative place,” she says. “I watched the sunset through my window every afternoon during the mild winter in a town between mountains and sea.” Burelli surrenders to the natural world and the ineffability of words - on De Sidera she shares the gem of universality she discovered while doing so.

Feijen’s mysterious photos of abandoned places - from collapsed residential interiors to cracked church walls to Ukraine’s Chernobyl - evoke a timeless, clandestine sensation that matches Mueller’s probing artistic process on Family Secret. Suitably, Family Secret is surreptitiously enticing and intimate - a house with room for one more. LISTEN HERE Over the course of two decades The Body, Lee Buford and Chip King, have consistently challenged assumptions and defied categorization, redefining what it means to be a heavy band. On I’ve Seen All I Need To See, they test the boundaries of the studio to explore the extremes and microtonality of distortion to find its maximal impact. Their most incisively bleak, a towering monolith of noise, album to date Buford’s booming, resolute drums paired with King’s obliterated guitar and howl. Course, bristling distortion contorts every instrument, with samples of spoken word, cymbals, toms and King’s already noxious tone emerging from layers of feedback. The recording studio remains indelible to The Body’s creative process. Together with engineer Seth Manchester of Machines With Magnets, they capture the complexities of distorted sound in stunning detail. The clarity and the cacophony exceed anything they’ve created before, morphing desolate, festering soundscapes into an exhilarating sonic universe. Buford often lays the framework for songs from the drums up, mirroring hip hop production. I’ve Seen All I Need To See trades out 808s and The Body’s self- sampling for live instruments with a focus on expanding mutations of sound from more limited sources. The results are remarkably rich textural bombardments. Throughout, The Body deliver oppressive noise with potent lucidity, replicating the overwhelming sound of their live performances in revelatory detail. I’ve Seen All I Need To See demonstrates not only The Body’s fearless spirit and vicious edge, but their intellectual musical heft through its explorations of distorted sound and the power of distorted sounds’ interplay. CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com It’s been 10 years since the release of Turning On, Cloud Nothings’ debut album. Singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi was just 18 years old when he began recording the album, creating each track in his parents’ basement in Cleveland, Ohio. Over one winter, Baldi produced an album of taut, lo-fi guitar-pop songs, playing each instrument himself. His music gained traction in the increasingly popular music blog circuit, allowing Baldi to book his first shows in new places, like New York City. He gathered a band together to play live, and Cloud Nothings were on their way. The band has accomplished a great deal since Turning On, signing to Carpark Records, releasing seven albums, and headlining numerous international tours. Yet, their debut isn’t dusted over in the band’s history. Turning On still remains the stripped-back core of Cloud Nothings style: raw and grungy, filled with catchy earworms that are surprisingly pop. All the tracks on Turning On are eruptive and restless, its lo-fi quality embodying the desperate need to record an idea by any means necessary. Songs like “Hey Cool Kid” encapsulate Baldi’s talent for churning, hook-filled guitar. The vocals on songs like “Can’t Stay Awake” are distorted, with scattered lyrics that echo the angst of a teenage diary. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE BRIDGE TO QUIET OVERVIEW On July 2nd, 2020 Animal Collective announced their new EP Bridge to Quiet to fans via their newsletter. At that time the band had the following to say about the release: Hello! We hope this finds you well out there! There’s been a lot simmering for us over the last few months. Our quarantining (some alone and some with our families) has made for some challenging but rewarding ways in which we have found to be creative. Along with Bridge to Quiet, a large majority of our catalogue will be available on our new Bandcamp page as of tomorrow, Friday 7/3. All of our LPs will be there, as well as some deep cuts which haven’t been available digitally until now. However, with preparing our back catalogue for release, there are a few things we felt important to address and correct. The first is the cover art for our People EP. There is no way to excuse using a “mammy" on our artwork, and so we have decided to remove it. We understand now that using a racist stereotype at all causes more damage than an explanation can repair, and we apologize. Moving forward, we will be donating a portion of our royalties from this record to the Equal Justice Initiative. The second is our Meeting of the Waters EP. Brian and Dave recorded samples of the Tatuyo tribe in Brazil playing music for the Viceland program “Earthworks,” which were later incorporated into Meeting of the Waters. When we released MOTW on Record Store Day we arranged for portions of those sales to go to IDESAM. As we were guests in their world, we feel it is only right to continue to show our gratitude. Moving forward we will be donating a portion of our royalties from this record to Cultural Survival. Finally, we have to address our LP Here Comes the Indian. With utmost respect to Indigenous people we feel that having the word Indian in our record title sends the wrong message by objectifying the American Indian people which is not what we were intending with the music. Because we have drawn countless inspiration from Indigenous people in America and around the world, moving forward, we will be donating a portion of our royalties from this record to Seeding Sovereignty, and changing the title to its original working title, Ark. These changes will take effect in the coming days across all platforms. Formed in London in 1988 and centered around childhood friends Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Lush expertly fused melody and guitars; a sound that was christened ‘shoegaze’ well after they released their first records, a scene they outlived by sharpening their pop sound as they went. Ciao! Best of Lush is a greatest hits compilation. Unique for a greatest hits compilation, it runs in reverse order - starting with four tracks that appeared on their third album, Lovelife (1996), in to five (six if you include a B-side) from their second Split (1994), then four from their debut Spooky (1992) before finishing with four early works which includes two from their first-ever release, 1989’s mini-album Scar. This double LP is pressed on red vinyl, is a gatefold and includes the original sleeve notes as written by Dominic Wills.

ore than a blue-eyed soul singer of the first order, Texas native Roy Head was a virtual human contortionist. When he guested on ABCTV’s nationally broadcast Shindig! to belt his 1965 smash “Treat Her Right,” he twisted himself into the shape of a human pretzel while never missing a beat behind the mic. Head was right at home in front of a roaring horn section even though his earliest platters were more rock and roll than R&B. The Lone Star State was notorious for mixing musical styles, and Roy paid no mind to idiomatic boundaries. Even in the years preceding his September 21, 2020 death of a heart attack at age 79 in Porter, Texas, Head was still merrily twirling his mic like a lariat (occasionally nailing one of his band members with it), attempting the occasional somersault, and indulging in free-wheeling craziness in front of cooking, horn-leavened bands. Roy Head was bigger than life. This collection digs deep and is sure to treat you right.

I was introduced to the Nutley Brass a couple of years ago by Joey Ramone himself, who was mightily impressed by this unique combo. There have been many tributes to the Ramones over the years, but, for your listening (and dancing) pleasure, the Nutley Brass have delivered the most original homage. Joey Ramone knows a good thing when he hears it, and didn’t need any persuading that in the Nutley Brass, he had discovered a hidden treasure. Unbelievers, who think punk bands were just a tuneless racket - eat your hats. Immediately.

A digital companion piece to the 20th Anniversary reissue of Beachwood Sparks’s eponymous debut album, BEACHWOOD DELUXE is a rare sonic glimpse at where the band was in 1999. The tracks are some of the only proper studio recordings to feature original guitarist/singer, the late Josh Schwartz. AL O S T M E N : KOL OGO “Kologo there before my mother, kologo music be the root…” Strut present the brand new album from Alostmen, led by Stevo Atambire, a band at the forefront of kologo music in Ghana. Formed by Stevo and Wanlov The Kubolor (Fok’n Bois) at the suggestion of co-producer Percy Yip Tong, Alostmen’s music is based around the Frafra traditions of the kologo, a stringed lute and uses purely traditional instrumentation in entirely new ways. “I always like to do something “out” with my instrument, I like to force it to work,” explains Stevo. “I’m a yout’man and into different kinds of music: commercial, rap music, reggae, Malian sounds. I add all of it to the band’s sound in different ways.” Wanlov continues, “The kologo is traditionally played a certain way but Stevo will play it at the shortest end of bridge and accentuate, almost Hendrix-style! He plays with a pedal sometimes and can keep it an octave down with a bass sound. He has evolved the instrument in his own way.” “I had been touring with Stevo in my band Afro Gypsy in 2017,” Wanlov continues, “and we began recording the tracks for this album on the road during one of our last tours to Uganda and the upper North West region of Ghana. I had a mobile studio unit and recorded him in his hotel rooms, in closets, wherever we could find that sounded good.” The band comprises Jo Ajusiwine, a brilliant goje (two-string fiddle) player and singer, talking drummer Aminu Amadu who has played in Ambolley’s highlife band and Sowah who plays heavy Ga rhythms on the gome box, djembe and conga. I play the kologo and give people the message. We don’t need anything else!” Stevo and Wanlov also invited selected guests to join the album sessions. Ambolley himself features on the driving ‘Minus Me’ while one of Stevo’s childhood friends and a national star, Yaa Pono, appears on the yearning ‘Fauziah’. “We just chose the right tracks for different guests and it all fit naturally,” continues Stevo. Medikal was a really nice guy with good vibes, now also a major artist, Villy is a great Nigerian singer based in Ghana and Eli Muzik has an unusual operatic vocal style. We play with him a lot. We didn’t just use ‘names’, just people that were great at their craft.” The band call themselves Alostmen “because we were lost in the street, the forgotten people,” explains Stevo. “My people listen closely to my lyrics so I never just sing anything. People at home see music as a teaching so I always try to send a good message. I talk of this region, how they used to live and what they experience today. I try to bring development, peace and unity to the community, to give them hope to achieve.” Wanlov continues: “The language of the music is Frafra, a Guruna language. The Frafra people are semi-nomadic, they deal with herds of cattle, they practice goje, kologo and a type of flute. The kologo players are similar to griots. Having already played dates across West Africa and Europe, Alostmen continue their journey with their superb debut album, ‘Kologo’, out on 29th January 2021, The album was mixed by DrumTalk and mastered at The Carvery. Fabled as the city where dreams come to thrive or die, Johannesburg is forever pumping out the life-giving force of criss-crossing sonic tributaries. As this collection of specially-recorded new music shows, every generation must discover for itself what perfecting the alchemy of that expression entails. Indaba Is - produced and managed by pianist Thandi Ntuli and The Brother Moves On bandleader Siyabonga Mthembu, tackles that inquiry with refreshing insight. The act of gathering to record in a time of isolation becomes one of anchoring and care; creating an energy field and capturing a living culture of making music. It is one in which bands exist to birth musical concepts as opposed to being static monoliths. Mostly recorded at Dyertribe Studio in Centurion, outside of Johannesburg, Indaba Is propels a collective of South African bands into the precipice of a new frontier. Jazz becomes a departure point as opposed to a tether. “The magic was in the choosing of artists who kind of straddle different genres, different ideas and sounds,” says Ntuli. “We put together musicians who are not in that kind of straight ahead place, even though some may have been in the jazz tradition or jazz-influenced styles of music.” The collection features eight tracks, attributed to Bokani Dyer, Lwanda Gogwana, The Brother Moves On, Thandi Ntuli, The Wretched, Sibusile Xaba and Iphupho likaBiko. Think of the names as thresholds through which ideas cross into the populace as opposed to being signifiers of strict ownership. For one, there is no mistaking the almost spectral presence of both Ntuli and Mthembu in and around the music. “Between me and Thandi, we pick up on the producer duties for four of the tracks,” says Mthembu. “Some of the bands came with already preconceived ideas of what they wanted to do and needed just facilitation on getting it done.” Overall, the pair also provided enabling briefs which harnessed the collective energy of scenes often seen as operating centrifugally to Johannesburg’s all-consuming pull, or a little further down in its tiers of visibility. There are several examples where this approach yields astounding results. Indigenous knowledge is perhaps at the root of it, and a reverence for its treasures is instant, but there is an overall sense that Indaba Is asks us to consider the heavy lifting that remains. Johannesburg, a city without a landmark water source, built on excavating the energy of its living dead, has never sounded so world-weary, and yet so ready to emerge out of the hold. With its unity of purpose, Indaba Is represents the crucible; untenable to the touch yet warm to the soul.

The Bug aka Kevin Martin, and producer/vocalist Dis Fig aka Felicia Chen, refer to their style on ‘In Blue’ as “Tunnel Sound”; a foggy, melancholic meltdown of narco-dancehall-soul and dread-drenched, electronic dub. The 2018 prototype rhythms for this album were a continuation of Martin’s ongoing quest for a futuristic dancehall mutation, but more sci-fi, aquatic and smokey than before. An obsessive search for the right sultry 2AM voice to ride his syncopated walls of sub, fuzzed out white noise and infinite echoes eventually led him to Dis Fig’s torched soul-jazz glow, and 20 months of subsequent lab exchanges have resulted in the deeply sensual pulsations and lyrical long shadows of ‘In Blue’ - an album that shares shades of King Midas Sound’s wrecked lovers rock, alongside the bass immersion that The Bug has become infamously known for. Just as Martin took a stylistic swerve on ‘In Blue’, so did Chen. Previously known for experimental noise onslaughts and emotional exorcisms, she opts here for threatening intimacy and hushed confessionals, concentrating on bittersweet vocals and seductive surprises that are all the more potent for their inferred narratives and delicate delivery. Mixed during lockdown, the sense of claustrofear, escapism and tension throughout is palpable. With the bewitching croon of Dis Fig directing the flow, carnality and violence merge under the turbulent, cinematic surface of an hypnotically addictive album.

Lawrence Lek is a simulation artist who uses computer-generated animation and video game engines to create films and virtual worlds that play with the language of science fiction, music videos and corporate world building. He has released soundtracks to five of his previous projects, most recently ‘Temple’ OST (Vinyl Factory, 2020). ‘AIDOL’ continues his on-going 'Sinofuturist' cinematic universe, which posits the creative theory that China's technological rise is an emergent form of Artificial Intelligence. ‘AIDOL’ is a CGI fantasy that tells the story of a fading superstar, Diva, who enlists an aspiring AI songwriter to mount a comeback performance at the 2065 eSports Olympic finale. Set in a realm of spectacular architecture, sentient drones and snow-deluged jungles, ‘AIDOL’ revolves around the long and evolving struggle between humanity and Artificial Intelligence; a shifting and seductive virtual reality, punctuated by Diva’s songs and the voice of Kode9 as the unforgiving label boss. The soundtrack is a delicate lattice - complex, opaque and entirely synthetic. Diva’s yearning vocals - created with a Vocaloid voice synthesiser, sung in English and Mandarin - cast classical melodies over billowing, intricate arrangements. The instrumental tracks, produced with composer Seth Scott, are elegiac and beautiful, hybridising the film score archetype, folding in patterns from game soundtracks, vaporwave, and ambient fourth world music.

Although the American Southwest is typically represented through the nostalgic and romantic lens of cowboy culture it is home to numerous atrocities. Religious persecution, disease, slavery, and other violent acts are burned into the memory of the landscape. Expansive Skies, deep canyons, and painted red rock have witnessed untold butchery and grief. This project a funerary monolith to the countless, unknown dead who resisted and died, crushed beneath the hooves of conquest, victims to genocide and massacres. This serves as a foundation for the sound of Heretical Sect, juxtaposed against the beauty of the high desert “We meet the madness of collapse; adorned in the cloak of chaos, confusion, and death—the mantle of our collective past.” The specific concept behind Rapturous Flesh Consumed is centered around the perspective of Salvador de Guerra, a religious zealot and Catholic Padre infamous for mutilation and torture. The album explores Guerra’s insanity and postulates some fictional reasoning behind his actions, seeing him obsess over the relationships between Christianity and native traditional beliefs. Attempting to marry the two through his own blasphemous rituals. Heretical Sect contains members of well-known Santa Fe bands but all members remain anonymous and hooded during live performances and photos so that the listener’s focus can be put upon the lyrical themes and songwriting. Rapturous Flesh Consumed was recorded live in the studio by Augustine Ortiz, who also meticulously mixed the album. Mastered at Cauliflower Audio in Cleveland, OH. The album’s artwork is by Zac Scheinbaum and was commissioned specifically to fit the album’s themes of ghastly religious persecution. Instant Opaque Evening is an epic offering from The Underflow, the new trio of Mats Gustafsson, David Grubbs, and Rob Mazurek. It makes vast strides on the heels of their self-titled 2019 debut (Corbett vs. Dempsey/Underflow Records) with nearly 90 minutes of intensely focused live performances from January 2020 shows in France, Belgium, Italy, and Poland. That tour was a revelation for all three members, experienced as they are, with this still-new group’s freedom to walk onstage each night determined to surprise one another, moving from long instrumental improvisations into and out of songs, and covering a terrific amount of ground at each of these concerts. Instant Opaque Evening conveys this broad sweep, from the full-tilt electronics of “Self-Portrait as Interference Pattern” and the climax of the seventeenminute “Instant Opaque Evening” to the inspired, alternate universe chamber music of “Planks” and “A Thin Eternity” and the group’s spontaneous arrangements of three previously recorded songs by Grubbs, “Gethsemani Night,” “An Optimist Declines,” and “Cooler Side of the Pillow.” The short version of the long tale of intersecting paths bringing together these three musicians begins in Chicago in the 1990s, with all three active participants in numerous convergences among jazz, free improvisation, experimental rock, and more. Both Gustafsson and Mazurek appear as guests on Gastr del Sol albums (Upgrade & Afterlife and Camoufleur respectively; that’s Rob’s cornet taking “The Seasons Reverse” to new heights), and shortly thereafter Grubbs and Gustafsson recorded two duo albums, including the deep minimalism of Apertura, a talismanic favorite of both musicians.

David Grubbs has played in Gastr del Sol, the Red Krayola, and Squirrel Bait and performed with Tony Conrad, Susan Howe, Pauline Oliveros, Will Oldham, and many others. He’s the author of the books The Voice in the Headphones, Now that the audience is assembled, and Records Ruin the Landscape. Saxophone player, improviser, and composer Mats Gustafsson is known as a solo artist and for international tours and projects with, among many others, Sonic Youth, Merzbow, Jim O’Rourke, Barry Guy, Otomo Yoshihide, Yoshimi, Peter Brötzmann, Neneh Cherry, Christian Marclay, Albert Oehlen, Ken Vandermark and the working groups FIRE!, THE END, LUFT, ANGUISH, and Gush as well as collaborations with contemporary dance, theatre, art, poetry, and projects with noise. Rob Mazurek is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on electro-acoustic composition, improvisation, performance, painting, sculpture, video, film, and installation, who spent much of his creative life in Chicago, and then Brazil. He currently lives and works in Marfa, Texas. He leads/co-leads many ensembles of various sizes and shapes including his flagship large ensemble Exploding Star Orchestra, Chicago Underground, and São Paulo Underground. He has collaborated with Bill Dixon, Pharoah Sanders, Roscoe Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Nicole Mitchell, Chad Taylor, Jim O’Rourke, Naná Vasconcelos, and many others.

ELLIOTT SHARP FILISETI MEKIDESI
Elliott Sharp’s opera Filiseti Mekidesi is a visceral meditation about the universal search for a safe neutral place. Rather than a linear narrative, the opera uses musical and poetic means to reflect moments and situations in cosmic and human history, in particular resonance with current events of great urgency. The various texts are by Tracie Morris, Edwin Torres, and Sharp, with projection design by Janene Higgins. The virtuoso cast includes Palestinian singer Kamilya Jubran, vocal group Voxnova Italia, and instrumental ensemble Musikfabrik from Cologne. Sharp has developed a variety of unique compositional strategies that come into play in this work: combinational streams, chains and loops of musical “molecules”, chaotic structures that transform into resonant rhythmic patterns, timbral counterpoint, and extended playing techniques to generate new virtual “instruments”. Filiseti Mekidesi premiered in September 2018 at the Turbinenhalle in Bochum as part of the RuhrTriennale. In the Nazi concentration camps of World War II, Jewish prisoners forged significant bonds and created ephemeral documents of their torturous experiences through song. In 2019, Yale University’s Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies produced an album, in collaboration with musicologist and musician D. Zisl Slepovitch, to honor the significance of these works: “Where Is Our Homeland?: Songs from Testimonies in the Fortunoff Video Archive, Volume 1.” “The widely diverse compositions presented on the album recreate a multidimensional image of people’s lives and the multiple identities they carried — as Jews by faith and roots, and as European citizens (Poles, Germans, Russians) by culture,” said D. Zisl Slepovitch, musician-in-residence at the Fortunoff Video Archive and the composer and arranger for “Where is Our Homeland?” “The core of this collection conveys the ways people managed to survive during the Holocaust, and the support they gained through the songs they wrote and sang in the ghettos and concentration camps all across Central and Eastern Europe.” Volume 1 of “Where is Our Homeland?” features 13 tracks of songs originally shared by Holocaust survivors in interviews conducted by the Fortunoff Video Archive, whose collection features no less than 4,400 individual testimonies -- more than 12,000 hours of recorded material in over a dozen languages. In a number of interviews, survivors recall songs and poems. For example, in her 1994 interview, Liubov K., who survived Nazioccupied Zvenigorodka, Ukraine, said: “Everyone [wrote the songs], all together. This one would give a word, that one would give two. This one a line, and the next would add another. That’s how it came together for us.” The songs created community, granted a form of power to their composers (as some songs mocked captors), and fostered a sense of hope for survival. The songs were performed by Zisl Slepovitch (woodwinds), Joshua Camp (accordion, piano), Dmitry Ishenko (bass), Craig Judelman (violin), and Sasha Lurje (vocals). Liner notes include contextual information for each song, translations by Daniel Kahn and Yeva Lapsker, and biographical information about each of the survivors who originally sang the song in their testimony.
