Jamaica All Stars combines two rare and long-out-of-print releases from the archives of Studio One, Jamaica All Stars Vol. 1 (1972) and Vol. 2 (1974). The albums featured early performances from some of the most legendary reggae artists of all time, including Alton Ellis, John Holt, Horace Andy, Burning Spear and more. Jamaica All Stars Vol .1 and Vol. 2 were never officially reissued, making this compilation of the two albums the first time the material has ever gotten a proper reissue. Produced by Studio One founder and “Father of Jamaican Music” Coxsone Dodd, Jamaica All Stars exhibits the quality of musicians that Jamaica had to offer in the ‘70s. Placing iconic artists like Ernest Ranglin and Hortense Ellis next to lesser-known vocalists like Jerry Jones and Winston Francis, the high quality of Studio One rocksteady, roots, and ska stays the same. All material on Jamaica All Stars is completely remastered and taken from the original tapes. A must-have for reggae collectors and a testament to the power of Studio One, the #1 sound of Jamaica.

Field Music’s new release is “Making A New World”, a 19 track song cycle about the after-effects of the First World War. But this is not an album about war and it is not, in any traditional sense, an album about remembrance. There are songs here about air traffic control and gender reassignment surgery. There are songs about Tiananmen Square and about ultrasound. There are even songs about Becontree Housing Estate and about sanitary towels. The songs grew from a project for the Imperial War Museum and were first performed at their sites in Salford and London in January 2019. The starting point was an image from a 1919 publication on munitions by the US War Department, made using “sound ranging”, a technique that utilised an array of transducers to capture the vibrations of gunfire at the front. These vibrations were displayed on a graph, similar to a seismograph, where the distances between peaks on different lines could be used to pinpoint the location of enemy armaments. This particular image showed the minute leading up to 11am on 11th November 1918, and the minute immediately after. One minute of oppressive, juddering noise and one minute of near-silence. “We imagined the lines from that image continuing across the next hundred years,” says the band’s David Brewis, “and we looked for stories which tied back to specific events from the war or the immediate aftermath.” If the original intention might have been to create a mostly instrumental piece, this research forced and inspired a different approach. These were stories itching to be told. The songs are in a kind of chronological order, starting with the end of the war itself; the uncertainty of heading home in a profoundly altered world (“Coffee or Wine”). Later we hear a song about the work of Dr Harold Gillies (the shimmering ballad, “A Change of Heir”), whose pioneering work on skin grafts for injured servicemen led him, in the 1940s, to perform some of the very first gender reassignment surgeries. We see how the horrors of the war led to the Dada movement and how that artistic reaction was echoed in the extreme performance art of the 60s and 70s (the mathematical head-spin of “A Shot To The Arm”). And then in the funk stomp of Money Is A Memory, we picture an office worker in the German Treasury preparing documents for the final instalment on reparation debts - a payment made in 2010, 91 years after the Treaty of Versailles was signed. A defining, blood-spattered element of 20th century history becomes a humdrum administrative task in a 21st century bureaucracy. Field Music will tour Making A New World throughout 2020.

New Zealand juggernaut Fat Freddy’s Drop return with a new studio album, ‘Special Edition Part 1’, due for digital release on 15th November, with 2LP Vinyl and CD following up on 10th January. The 45rpm vinyl edition is produced with a different track order across four sides and promises to deliver super fat loud audio. Part 1 of a double album, ‘Special Edition Part 1’, comprises of six tracks of which ‘Raleigh Twenty’, ‘Trickle Down’ and ‘Six-Eight Instrumental’ were written and recorded undercover at the band’s Wellington studio, BAYS, while the other tracks; ‘Special Edition, ‘Kamo Kamo’, and ‘OneFourteen’, have all been developed and evolved from the band’s celebrated live jam sessions, whilst on the road in front of audiences worldwide. Seldom has the title of a debut album been more apt than the one that graced Laura Nyro’s 1967 release, More Than a New Discovery. This was not the mere first foray of a budding talent. Instead, More Than a New Discovery introduced a fully-realized, remarkably mature (at the age of 19!) singer-songwriter whose singular fusion of pop, jazz, R&B, soul, Broadway, and folk sounds created some of the most beloved songs in modern popular music. Now, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to reissue, for the first time ever on vinyl (and in homage to Laura’s favorite color), More Than a New Discovery in a limited violet vinyl edition limited to 1250 copies. Which, ordinarily, would be news enough! But there’s more to the story. First of all, More Than a New Discovery, originally released on Verve Folkways in 1967, premiered the songs that Barbra Streisand, Blood Sweat and Tears, and The 5th Dimension would all take up the charts, including “Stoney End,” “And When I Die,” “Blowin’ Away,” and perhaps the most famous song Nyro ever wrote, “Wedding Bell Blues.” But both the Verve Forecast and, later, Columbia labels reissued this record as The First Songs with new artwork, a different song order and added reverb. This limited edition restores the original cover art and album sequence, and, even better, offers the incredibly rare, dedicated mono mix—according to Felix Cavaliere of The Rascals, Laura’s preferred mode of audio reproduction— from the very first version of the album as remastered from the original tapes by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios, with lacquer cutting by Clint Holley at Well Made Music. And, we have added an insert featuring photos and notes by The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese that place the record in context of Nyro’s remarkable career. Billy, Paul, Chuck and Rosy got together in the early 1980s as the 11th Hour Band – played some great rockin’ blues, hit the Boston area clubs and had some wild times. They released “Hot Time In The City Tonight” in 1985, the first record on the fledgling ToneCool Records imprint, and went on to play together off and on for the next few decades. They all stayed busy STREET DATE: 1/10/20 with other pursuits, musical and otherwise, but their unique musical chemistry and friendship kept bringing the “11 Guys” back to their original quartet. Around 2008 they decided to go into the studio to record some original instrumentals — straight-ahead, unadorned live takes, mood pieces and variations — no screaming solos, all selfcontained and, well… small. LISTEN HERE Markus Popp, the man behind Oval, is credited with creating the style we now know as “glitch” or “clicks & cuts”, but he never stopped there. Scis is his latest offering, an album still pushing technology, using the computer as an instrument, but for the first time it seems you can most clearly hear the musician behind the screen. It’s emotive, there’s loops of acoustic instruments, composed together in ways that feel more organic, and improvised. Popp describes extensive research into “new vintage”, and this album reflects that & his history. It employs familiar sounds or motifs in new ways, and unfamiliar sounds in old ways and this combo gives it something present. There’s prepared pianos, woodwinds, sweeping strings, gritty bass riffs arranged, among other styles, using Oval’s signature loop-driven techniques. Moments remind of traditional electronic and re-imaginations of a club sound aesthetic, and there’s moments that feel cinematic and lyrical and the album as a whole feels in between and both. He’s garnered “best of” & lifetime achievement awards globally since, 94diskont, his first realease in 1995. With his early works he championed software intuition over his own role in music making, anticipating the AI trend in composition while most of us were still mastering Microsoft word. Popp toured with a desktop computer and projected his screen, constructing remarkably evocative and emotional performances from file manipulation. Each new Oval release saw Popp radically redefine his practice, introducing new elements and embracing new creative challenges, integrating cutting edge technology and processes into his practice to ensure that each record sounded as contemporary and exhilarating as the last.Where early compositions saw Popp meticulously tinkering with software and systems to reduce his own visible hand in the music, Scis instead sees Popp focus the human element in his creation, augmenting delicate and intensely crafted loops with an array of acoustic instruments.

DIRTY PROJECTORS SING THE MELODY OVERVIEW The next installment of the Domino Documents series features Dirty Projectors at the height of their touring powers. In the late fall of 2018 the band went into New York City’s prestigious Power Station studios (Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Bob Dylan) to record road-tested and refined live arrangements of songs they had been performing on tour throughout the year. “Deakin has put out a solo record of understated eloquence” UNDER THE RADAR OVERVIEW Animal Collective’s Deakin is issuing his 2016 album Sleep Cycle on vinyl and CD. Written and recorded between 2010 and 2016, it was originally released in April 2016 via digital and a limited run of cassettes. On the album, Deakin said, “Sleep Cycle is about the cycles that we go through being shut down by fear and doubt and how to return back to being awake to life. The songs were written as a form of self medication, meditations on waking up in the face of fear.” While all of its songs were conceived in 2010, only the ambient tracks on the album are recordings from that time. “Footy” and “Good House” were recorded in 2015 at the Rare Book Room studio with Nicolas Vernhes. Josh recruited long-time friend Tim Dewit (aka Dutch E. Germ, original member of Gang Gang Dance) to play drums on “Footy.” After hearing some demos, Pete Kember (aka Sonic Boom) asked to mix “Good House”, and the resulting track is what made the album. Over the course of late 2015, Josh finished the rest of the recording and mixing himself at home.

OOIOO is a name that should be familiar for anyone whose waded into rock and if their name isn’t, YoshimiO, their leader’s, should be. Percussionist and founding member for the Boredoms, & Saicobab, and a long time collaborator of Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth), Susie Ibarra, & Robert Lowe among others. It’s no surprise that each OOIOO record has been as energizing and enthralling as the last, which might be the most consistent thing about their 8 records that each focus on and offer listeners something new. Nijimusi was mainly recorded using a conventional rock ensemble of of two guitars, bass, and drums, but often feels more than that, the phrasing and rhythms becoming something new slowly and then all at once. It’s rock, but can be hard to pin down exactly; psychedelic, shimmering distortion, shouts, and tight instrumentation giving way to a controlled burn of instrumental breakdowns. MISHINA’s, added as the drummer in 2016, drumming shines. They use an improvisational process for recording, which leaves us with a record that feels so alive it’s sometimes surprising it’s still the same record every time you play it. Founded in 1995 OOIOO continue to wow. After 6 years without realeasing new music internationally they’ve created a new album that goes back to the roots of being a four-piece band. OOIOO’s members came together as musicians who move freely between the audible and inaudible, rhythm and non-rhythm, noise and silence. Nijimusi can be considered music, but is also a work of art that stimulates the sense of touch and smell, while being atmospheric and ethereal at the same time. The songs comprising Keeley Forsyth’s debut, are, she states simply, “like blocks of metal that drop from the sky”. Minimal arrangements place that elemental voice front and centre. The full scope of his wide-ranging experiments in synthesis and electronic arrangement encompasses everything from expansive new age drift exercises, to purely textural noise sculpting, to the strain of post-Berlin School cybernetic prog composition that characterized newer albums like Through The Portal (Phinery, 2016) and Digital Rainforest (Beer on the Rug, 2015). Swirlings, his first full-length LP on Hausu Mountain, follows a split release with Brett Naucke (HAUSMO53, 2017), and albums on labels like Immune, NNA, and Constellation Tatsu. Swirlings finds Pulse Emitter tempering his more recent melodic streak with a host of time-distorting compositional strategies from the ambient and drone traditions, yielding a hybridized vision of his music that spans distinct eras and styles of his output. Taken in the context of his cosmic song titles and long-standing incorporation of sci-fi themes and imagery, the album bears the outward signs of the ambient record that seeks to evoke the experience of deep space travel, or observing a lush garden of alien flora from the deck of a starship. Groetsch ornaments his gorgeous harmonic whirlpools and majestic spreads of smeared drones with layers of crystalline melody and flourishes of granular processing. His pieces stretch through minimal expanses in which individual pads and bass notes sketch out a churning rhythmic grid before blooming into mosaics of interlaced arpeggios and lead voices. Pulse Emitter approaches electronic composition from the perspective of a master craftsman, harnessing a fine-tuned sense of narrative development and a penchant for juxtaposing contrasting synth voices from far-flung corners of his arsenal of softsynths, app-based programs, and hardware instruments. While he conjures time-lapse vistas of galaxies and nebulas in our mind’s eye, the sophistication of his arrangements and the universal beauty of his harmonies pushes the lens inward on the self, resulting in a journey that is as personal and internal as it is celestial. Swirlings represents a culmination of diverse modes of creation that Pulse Emitter has developed over the course of his recent releases. As on 2018’s Xenharmonic Passages, Groetsch moves beyond traditional tonalities and western scales to incorporate elements of microtonality into his percolating black hole soundscapes. As on his five volume series called Meditative Music, he hones in on 6 to 7-minute drifting pieces that balance a sense of delicate stasis with great depth of detail and movement. The lead lines present on Swirlings continue Pulse Emitter’s fascination with emulated instrumental tones characteristic of ‘80s synth composition, as more chintzy or brittle voices collide with patches of ultra high-fidelity synthetic pointillism. Far from the realm of plug-andpress-play ambient computer music, his hands-on input on his system of machines can compress time into pockets of acute structural turbulence, or lock into streams of slow equilibrium where one can trace his live manipulation of single voices or textural parameters. With Swirlings, Pulse Emitter taps into the benevolence and natural curiosity at the heart of his practice. After decades guiding us down a network of distinct paths through the cosmos, Groetsch has become the wise traveler that we turn to transfix and entertain us, to kindle a spark of warmth in the cold void of space.
