I strongly believe we need to make some bribes, to get me into the writing room for the final episode of HBO’s hit show Succession. Episode synopsis as follows:
Where do you go to search for new music? Who or what has been a new find you’d like to rave about? We align the carefully researched data points from TikTok and Youtube as well as other socials, then draw our conclusions… Not. Somehow, weirdly, they keep finding us… -Christof Ellinghaus, City Slang
The Roy siblings are stunned when Waystar Royco’s imminent takeover is suddenly thrown into chaos, as a surprise last minute high bidder is dramatically revealed - eccentric music industry mogul, Tor Hansen (Redeye co-founder). In a futile effort to ease tension between the two companies at this pivotal point, Kendall Roy is flown out to Stockholm to meet the hip young company PNKSLM Recordings, to get a grasp on the sort of people they will now be forced to work with. Kendall’s emotions start to rock as he boards the plane, specifically as he’s taking the same flight route his father recently had. Relationships fail almost instantly after Kendall meets PNKSLM founder Luke Reilly (played by Keanu Reeves), as the two industry giants clash personalities on every level. They both go to top local restaurant “The Crazy Horse” for dinner with the previously expected buyer of Waystar Royco, the Swedish tech entrepreneur Lucas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). Whilst Kendall visits the bathroom, Reilly and Matsson make plans to kill him, following poorly received comments he made about Brexit “being kinda cool, if you think about it”. Reilly & Matsson lace his meatballs with rat poison taken from the restaurant floor. Kendall returns, and starts to eat the meatballs. The song “Done With The Day” by PNKSLM artist 7ebra starts playing. In one final twist, whilst consuming his final köttbular - Kendall opens up to Reilly & Matsson - and apologizes for all his wrongdoings, and admits it was a poor decision “based on my own insecurities and my fundamental need to be accepted” to wear the 50,000 dollar leather jacket to a meeting with a record label. Reilly & Matsson look regretfully at each other, but know it’s too late. The episode and series wrap up with a shot of Tor Hansen reclining in his chair with a cigar, in the new Waystar Redeyeco office. The song “No Regrets” by PNKSLM artist She/Beast begins playing. Cut to Roman and Shiv slowly packing their boxes at the office, tears in their eyes - finally realizing, albeit too late, that despite all their differences - Kendall truly was their one last chance to keep the family legacy alive. -Luke Reilly, PNKSLM Recordings
What is the meaning behind the name for the label? It comes from the movie Dirty Work but doesn’t really have any meaning behind it other than liking the way it sounded. Fuzzy Sun ~ Not Sport, Marital Art ~ The Workplace ~ Halfway to a Threeway It seems like it was only a few months ago that Jim O’Rourke changed everything with the release of the incredible Eureka. And if you actually think that, then by George, you’re the Rip van Winkle of 90s rock! It hasn’t even been a few months since Jim’s twin comebacks The Visitor and Simple Songs, his most recent albums in the mold of his classic “pop music” trilogy of Bad Timing, Eureka, and Insignificance. Those two are thirteen and seven years behind us already! O’Rourke freak or not, if you’re losing that much time in your life, you’d better have your head examined. Well, never mind—as long as people love it, here’s another few sides of long-ago and far-away O’Rourke back on vinyl for the first time in the post-pan era. It’s the “Halfway to a Threeway” 12”EP back to set turntables a-spinnin’! Fans of Eureka and Insignificance (not to mention Jim’s tomfoolery as part of the Loose Fur band) will appreciate the analog pressing of these four slices of the pop music party-pooper combination of folk, classic rock, smooth jazz and a bit of the old avant-garde to help communicate the twisted ways of the misanthrope that made Jim such a perennial in the fickle world of record sales. A quick listen to the title track will hip you to our meaning: “Halfway to a Threeway” exposes our sweet soul-crusher as a lustful man-beast on the make. The song is a straight folk number—straight, that is, until you listen through the haze of those 6-string overtones and chirpy harmony vocals to hear all the o’rourke that’s fit to pimp the true perversity of O’Rourke’s fantasies. The decadence of stardom seems to have turned Jim into not only a sex freak, but also a man who loves women of all persuasions—particular the crippled and brain-dead kind! Don’t listen to this song alone—at least, not with the drapes open. The whole EP’s a frankly-crazed snapshot of Jim's pop style in transition from Eureka to Insignificance, and its aged as well as those classic full-lengths in the—what’th! twenty three ding dang years since it first spread like the strangely appealing odor that it is was and is.

Tambor De Cura / Devotion is Daniel David’s debut release on Bastard Jazz Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) is a Bay Area born and raised multi-instrumentalist producer and singer and one half of San Francisco’s boogie funk outfit The Pendletons. The Pendletons broke out with their track “Gotta Get Out” which was heavily pushed by Gilles Peterson and came out on one of his ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation The Pendletons are one of the most respected & well known acts to come out of the Bay Area’s funk revival scene. Past collaborators include Potatohead People, B.Bravo, Zackey Force Funk, TRKRNR, E. Live, Mofak, Neon Brown and many others.
Bastard Jazz is proud to present the first solo record from Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) known for his work in the legendary SF duo the Pendletons. Daniel was responsible for helping to kickstart the “Modern Funk” resurgence that happened in the Bay in the mid 2000’s. On this 7”, Daniel continues pushing boundaries with two heavy tracks influenced by the sounds of Brazil. "Tambor De Cura” sees him teaming up with Bay Area staples Jazz Mafia and Rio De Janeiro artist Guinu to cook up a genre-defying dancefloor hitter that blends dirty analog Brazilian funk, sci-fi synth sounds and raw horn lines with an unstoppable bass hook. Midway, the song transitions into a Samba break with a beautiful trumpet solo, while seamlessly returning to its infectious house tempo. Guinu’s passionate vocals highlight the healing power of the music. On "Devotion", Daniel and Jazz Mafia bring a rich up-tempo offering. Building off of a hypnotic jazzy house piano and tapestry of congas and live percussion, Daniel soulfully paints a picture of connecting to spirit through one’s inner world. Jazz Mafia’s driving horns build throughout, propelling the track, with relief by an energetic drum breakdown and conga solo. Currently based in Dallas, TX, Daniel is one half of San Francisco’s boogie funk outfit The Pendletons, which he heads up with musical partner E Da Boss. Growing up around a diverse palate of music, Daniel connected strongly to mid-eighties rap and freestyle music, while also being enthralled with the rock and jazz fusion music from his father’s record collection. The band’s early run of EPs established the Connecticut four-piece as a modern update on a certain strain of northeastern indie-rock. By the time the band’s debut album Am was released in 2013, Ovlov was getting comparisons to Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh tossed in their direction, and while those elements were certainly present in their sound, Ovlov always let catchy pop hooks slip into the mix too. Berkmann has travelled a long way already. In his childhood home among the Bavarian Alps, where the loudest sounds were the ringing of church bells and the mooing of cows, he discovered the power of music via his sister's collection of rock records: Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana. Improvised music and the double bass were revelations that spurred his next voyages of discovery - f irst to the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich, then north to the Jazz Institute in Berlin, then across the ocean to New York at the Manhattan School Of Music. Since returning to Berlin, he has released two acclaimed albums as part of the band SCOPES. Now we are invited to join him f or 'Journey', his debut album as a leader and composer. The music hooks the listener immediately, anchored by Berkmann's resonating bass sound, beautif ully captured in all of its gut- string glory. His compositions are complex yet accessible, mixing the sophistication of his immersion in the jazz scene with his love of popular song. As Tom explains: "Genre- wise I'd call it modern jazz but I don't really f it into that box of contemporary jazz - sometimes too melodic, too groovy. The inspiration f or the project originated as Matt revisited his collection of early 70s releases by Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi group - some of the pianist's most overlooked and least understood albums. "The concept of Million Seller was to create a contemporary sound with similar elements to the Mwandishi band, putting the electronics and percussion at the f oref ront, merging organic and synthetic." Mwandishi (originally a sextet, later a septet with added electronics) had three horn players: Million Seller has none, instead using three synth players: Calvert himself is joined by Stale Storlokken of f ree- f orm experimental legends Supersilent, and by the unclassif iable improvisor Matthew Bourne. The line-up is completed by drummer Dave Smith, who brings his comprehensive knowledge of the Gambian tradition of Sabar drumming alongside his extensive jazz background, and a trio of guest musicians: Mamadou Saar on sabar and djembe drums, Kadialy Koudate on kora, and Sam Wilson on contemporary percussion. The results are a striking f usion of ancient and modern sounds, of heavy yet playf ul synth interactions topped by driving acoustic percussion, of wild improvisation mixed with moments of ambient beauty, all creating a sonic identity that's every bit as unique, wide-ranging and unf orgettable as its inspiration. Four Calendar Café, the seventh and penultimate studio album by Cocteau Twins, has just turned thirty and in January, 4AD will reissue both it and the 1996 follow-up, Milk & Kisses, in the United States on black vinyl + CD. This will mark the first official vinyl pressing outside of Europe. Robin Guthrie returned to his original studio mixes and has delivered stunning, brand new 24-bit masters of both titles. Named after a passage in William Least Heat-Moon’s book Blue Highways in which he rates eateries by the number of calendars they have hanging, 1993’s Four Calendar Café was the first of two Cocteau Twins albums released via Fontana / Capitol Records after their long association with 4AD ended on a high with 1990’s landmark LP, Heaven or Las Vegas. Like most Cocteau Twins works before it, Four Calendar Café was recorded and produced by the band, this time at their September Sound studio on the banks of the Thames in West London. A beautiful yet bittersweet record featuring the singles ‘Bluebeard’, ‘Evangeline’ and ‘Summerhead’, the band manifest maturity and fragility in equal measure and while Liz’s lyrics remain cryptic, she’s purposefully being more intelligible and honest. Complete with a memorable design of inanimate objects by the I Spy children’s book creator Walter Wick, Four Calendar Café still stands tall going in to its fourth decade.

Released in March 1996, Milk & Kisses is the eighth and final studio album by Cocteau Twins. And like its predecessor, 1993’s Four Calendar Café, it has never been formally released on vinyl outside Europe. The second of two albums Cocteau Twins released via Fontana / Capitol Records after their long association with 4AD ended in 1990 with Heaven or Las Vegas, the band warmed the waters for Milk & Kisses with a pair of exceptional EPs where they took their music to new places, Twinlights and Otherness - the first largely acoustic, the second their only sanctioned remixes (done with Seefeel’s Mark Clifford). A period of high creativity for the band, renewed after a turbulent time, they recorded and produced Milk & Kisses between their September Sound studio in London and the coastal town of Pors Poulhan in Brittany, France. Featuring the singles ‘Tishbite’ and ‘Violaine’ and fan favourites such as ‘Serpentskirt’ and ‘Treasure Hiding’, the album is a cathartic listen too with MOJO saying in a glowing review that the album’s title “accurately intimates its soothing, healing powers.” Ultimately, Milk & Kisses also proved to be their swan song, bringing the curtain down on 14 years of wonder to leave an incredible legacy that new generations continue to discover to this day. Life Is A Freak Show,” there’s something distinctly different about this version of Kal Marks. While Carl Shane still sounds like himself, he allows his voice to sit front and center without any adornments. His vocals appear more human and vulnerable, which matches the band’s new musical trajectory perfectly. Of course, Shane still kicks in screams that shake the speakers, but he sounds less like a monster and more like a person exorcising their demons. From track to track on My Name Is Hell, the lyrics tackle everything from losing friends, religion’s toxic touch, the crushing weight of debt, the monotony of the suburbs, and the disgusting nature of the human race. Much like he needed his band to be torn down to build this new version of it, Shane’s songs never give the sense that he’s wallowing in these subjects. Instead, he’s trying to make sense of them and find some peace throughout that journey. By plumbing the depths of his anger, frustration, and sadness, My Name Is Hell admits that we’re all a little scared, angry, and confused, but we’re still trying to navigate the world the best we can.

When Alex Stephens (A.K.A. Strawberry Guy) self-released his debut single last year, he was merely doing it out of a love for songwriting. What he wasn't expecting was a million Youtube streams and an avid fanbase. Now, the South-Wales born, Liverpool-based songwriter is ready to release a full EP of his compelling, lushly produced dream-pop. Born outside Cardiff, Strawberry Guy moved to Liverpool to study music and grow as a writer. 'I knew that it was a very artistic city with all it’s creative history, it seemed like the perfect place to move to.' he says. Whether it's playing keyboards in The Orielles or just being part of the city's growing musical scene, Alex plays music for the love of music, something that heavily translates into his adept songwriting. 'I put out the first single ‘Without You’ on Soundcloud not really expecting much from it.' he explains, speaking to us about his journey to this release. 'To actually have a fanbase now from it is surprising and amazing.' These passionate supporters are already strong in number & character and Youtube is becoming increasingly filled with various fan-made videos for his tracks. The intense emotional feel of the tracks he writes is down to Alex's songwriting process, recording the entire EP in his bedroom & producing it himself. 'I feel that it’s important to me to only write/record when you’re channeling some kind of emotion, so I would only work on it when I was in the right mood to do so.' He answers when asked about the isolated environment into which he put himself for the recording process. Much of the inspiration for Alex's work comes from experience rather than other artists. 'When something significant happens to me, all I want to do is make music.' In terms of musical touchstones however, there's the obvious dream-pop contemporaries such as Beach House and Weyes Blood, coupled with great songwriters of old like Nat King Cole or Harry Nillson. Sonically, a blend of orchestral & synthesized melodies layer together to act as a platform for his heartfelt lyrics. Opener 'Without You' is a fine example of this, a break-up song of sorts, with an infectious keyboard melody and swirling synths over which Alex contemplates whether it's even possible to find lasting love. The lyrics 'Do you really have to talk about the things you do with him? Do you really have to talk about your love?' hit particulary heavily. Contrast this with the final track, the titular 'Taking My Time To Be', a powerful song of self-discovery. Beginning with downtempo piano and drums, the song breaks out into a saxophone and synth solo that wouldn't go amiss on a Badalamenti soundtrack. ' The song is about me learning to be comfortable with myself, but then wondering if I'll be accepted for being myself' Alex imparts. It's a fitting closer to a EP driven by emotion and experience. Currently playing his live shows with a full band of 'berries' he's hoping to get a full tour going, and says this is just the begininng. ' I won’t stop making music, I can’t help but just write, it’s something that I have to do. An album will be coming at some point, I can say that for sure.

In October 2017, ex-Hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian hit the British Isles. These weather systems had formed separately over the Atlantic before moving north-east and converging. In addition to 100mph winds and widespread damage and disruption, the storms brought dust from the Sahara Desert that turned the skies orange over much of the UK. This otherworldly meteorological phenomenon serves as a fitting backdrop to Chimet. Chimet charts the progress of the two storms over the course of a week, utilising data from Chichester West Pole Beacon a weather station in the Solent which stands in some of the most treacherous waters in the UK.

The album was created using 2,016 sampled data streams, translating seven days of information into 67 minutes and 12 seconds of detailed and evolving music. With mother nature orchestrating the piece, she is joined by intuitive and powerful improvisations on piano, cello and synthesiser. The recording captures the sense of building expectation and tension, the dropping air pressure, the rising winds, the interlocking storm systems and the serene aftermath. The shifts are seamless, monumental and open to the elements.

Chimet is a record to lose yourself in. Like the sea itself, it doesn’t give up its secrets easily. The listening experience seems to change depending on your state of mind, and resonates on a primal level which belies its data led compositional approach. For generations, artists and musicians have been drawn to the sea for their inspiration. That emotional response to the vastness of the ocean is a powerful force. Partial Traces continue to evolve on their fourth LP, Stay Dreaming. The stripped down pandemic-era recording techniques they employed during the recording of their previous record, Wild Surf / Quiet Blues, helped the band evolved to a significantly sparser sound. Band members Brad Lokkesmoe, Maren Macosko, and Nate Gangelhoff all cut their teeth in Minneapolis punk bands Dear Landlord, The Soviets and Banner Pilot amongst others. But instead of pop-punk on Stay Dreaming the trio has made a sparse, beautiful and sometimes haunting synth heavy record with rich, dreamy layers and plenty of feedback that evokes The Jesus and Mary Chain or Beach House. A�er being sold out for almost a year, the classic album ’New Flesh’ by Swedish synth-wizards Priest at last gets a long awaited reissue! Here’s a short descrip�on that was stated during it’s original release in 2017: ”New Flesh is inhaling smog from the 80s and blowing smoke rings into a neon lit future. Believing in spiritual awakening through technology, Priest makes you transcend safely to reach the ul�mate goal - the merging with machines. Album producer Simon Söderberg (Alpha/ ex Ghost member) have worked with the band to perfect their sound. There is modern touch with a retro vibe over the en�re album. “New Flesh” containes a total of ten tracks that that brings 2017 back to the 80s.” Now, in 2023, Priest (with ex-Ghost members) is a globally touring band that have an ever-growing cult following with thousands of records sold and millions of streams worldwide. 8. From the depth of in Iceland’s Reykjavik NYRST has forged a new blackened creation by the name "Völd", an album that pays homage to the immense volcanoes of Iceland. With “Völd” which roughly translates to “Force, power or might”, NYRST conjures forth music with the unrelenting and unforgiving harshness that the forces of nature have wrought upon every living being in their land through the ages. Written and rehearsed only a few kilometres from a lava spewing active volcano, they sought inspiration in the beauty and perilousness danger of the stark and chaotic surroundings, wishing to portray their material accordingly. As the band says themselves: This release marks a big milestone in our career as a band. We’ve developed a lot as musicians since the release of “Orsök” and we took a very different approach to writing and composition. Our intention was to bring all the best elements of our previous work and implement new ideas along with a different theme, which in turn resulted in a much heavier, grim but melodic album. Reykjavík, Iceland-based black metal act NYRST was formed in the year 2013 with the aim of creating the coldest, most eerie and barren soundscape possible. After the release of their demo in 2016 and a full-length debut album in 2020, a dense atmospheric experience which gained much praise for perilous melodies and intense vocals, NYRST display a vicious prowess in their craft, unusual in a band so early in their career. The songs on Afrodisiac were tracks that Fela and the Nigeria 70 (Later Africa 70) re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1972 after they had become hits in Nigeria. The best known song on the album, ‘Jeun Ko Ku’, is listed by its Pidgin title ‘Chop and Quench.’ It’s a satire about gluttony and Fela’s first major hit across West Africa.
