Otá Records is the label home for celebrated 7-time GRAMMY-nominated Cuban composer, pianist, and bandleader Omar Sosa. Formed in 1996 and based in Oakland, California, Otá Records produces several Omar Sosa-related projects each year. The catalog includes five GRAMMY-nominated albums: Sentir (OTA1009), Mulatos (OTA1014), Across The Divide (HN4538), Calma (OTA1022), and EGGUN (OTA1024). Omar Sosa has received wide-ranging international acclaim, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian Associates (Washington, DC), an Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year award from the Jazz Journalists Association (NYC), two BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music nominations (London), and an ECHO Jazz Award in Germany for the album Ceremony (OTA1021) with the NDR Bigband, to mention just a few. Mr. Sosa performs overs 100 concerts annually, with extensive touring in the United States and Canada. HORSELOVER FATS LIBERTY ASHES NORTHERN SPY RECORDS New noise rock band from Brooklyn. 'Liberty Ashes' is an exercise in not only deliberation but also impulse. Side A and Side B act as inverse of each other, sharing similar three-movement structure. A is the more deliberate, ecstatic piece, its hulking movement arranged for the appearance of the State Street Singers men's choir, led by Matt Morello. Ferocious wormhole guitars and irascible walls of drums weave in and out of the Latin incantations of the choir, producing a bliss both pineal and cerebral. Side B focuses more on chance--the composition builds around blooming synth pads and wanderlust guitars before dropping into synthetic percussion, processed into oblivion. By the end of the piece, vocals lace the ambient washes of the keys and guitars, again achieving a bliss--this one subliminal. The contrast between the two sides of Liberty Ashes is stark, but the spirit is similar. The music comes fast and easy, both seamless and sawtooth, sacred and profane. It's a record built toward the end of post-modernity, exploring dichotomies of loud/quiet, space/occupation, light/dark, and free/unfree. Liberty Ashes refers to the remnants of an ideology, that deliberation and impulse together lead to something more sustainable than either on their own. Atrocity Exhibition is one of the freshest and boldest-sounding rap albums in recent memory, a sonic swirl inspired by the work of Talking Heads and Joy Division that nonetheless sounds like nothing else from the past or present. Featuring contributions from producers like Evian Christ, Petite Noir (who also lends vocals to the world-weary clang of “Rolling Stone”), Black Milk, the Alchemist and frequent collaborator Paul White, the album is full of laser-beam guitars, gym-teacher whistles, creaking vocal samples, and air-raid drones. It is the most intriguing take on hallucinatory rap since the heady heights of Cold Vein or Madvillainy. Known for his wide range of collaborations, including everyone from Purity Ring, the Avalanches and Rustie to Schoolboy Q, E-40, and Ghostface Killah, Atrocity Exhibition sees a continuation of this carefully curated mix. Kelela lends her snaking vocals to the intriguingly murky “From the Ground,” Cypress Hill’s B-Real delivers “Get Hi”’s languid hook, and Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar, and Ab-Soul all convene for the twinkling ominousness of album standout “Really Doe.” “When XXX came out, all of us were peers, and those were the three rappers who were the best,” Brown explains on having the star-packed trio appear on the track. “I felt like we were competitors, they made me want to step my game up. Written between January and April 2016, the record “reflects a period of great change in my life. I moved across the country to a new city, I proposed to the girl of my dreams, I moved into a new house, bought a brand new computer and set off to write a new album.” From opener “Lapis,” Machinedrum sets out his stall — an arpeggio ascending to heaven which, apparently building towards the mother of all drops, instead fades up and off into the ether. The music throughout is scintillating, from the mind-candy riffs of “White Crown” (featuring some crazy guitar work from Tosin Abasi of progresive metal band Animals As Leaders), the ecstatic d&b finale of “Do It 4 U” (an absolute stand-out with showstopper vox from singer-of-the-moment D∆WN), the smile-inducing, melodic brilliance of “Color Communicator,” or the precision and build of first single “Dos Puertas,” featuring Rihanna collaborator Kevin Hussein. Hussein, D∆WN and Abasi aren’t the only collaborators to have bought into this new take on the Machinedrum universe. Fresh off the back of two prominent collabs on Beyonce’s Lemonade, MeLo-X offers understated, classy assistance on the wonderful “Angel Speak,” sitting his voice in amongst heavenly vocal chops. Jesse Boykins III offers a moment of astral r&b goodness on “Celestial Levels.” Rochelle Jordan provides the lift off as Machinedrum works the rhythm flips on “Tell U.” There are telling contributions, too, from Ruckazoid, Roses Gabore and SK Simeon.

Earlier that same year, Ravi Shankar performed a morning concert in his home on Highland Avenue in Hollywood, California with Harrison in attendance. As Ravi’s wife, Sukanya Shankar, attests in her amazing liner notes, this concert most certainly sowed the seed for the overwhelmingly successful Concert for Bangladesh. All of these singles featured here were released on Allen Toussaint and his business partner Marshal Sehorn’s local New Orleans label Sansu, widely distributed in the southern city but in only limited quantities elsewhere. As a consequence, Betty Harris’ music failed to achieve the commercial success of other New Orleans artists such as Lee Dorsey (who she recorded with) and The Meters (who backed her). And so at the end of the decade she stopped recording, retired from the music business to raise her family in Florida.

Night Illusion 30th Sep 2016 No shipments outside of North America Soul Jazz Records’ are releasing Tee Mac’s ‘Night Illusion’, a lost classic Nigerian Afro soul meets disco boogie funk album originally released in Nigeria in 1980 as a private-press release of 1000 copies on the enigmatic artists’ own label. Impossibly hard to find, the record remains practically unknown outside of Nigeria. Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger and features on Soul Jazz Records’ recent collection Nigeria Soul Fever – Afro Funk Disco and Boogie alongside Joni Haastrup, Christy Essien and others, as well as on a recent compilation ‘Nepa Oh Nepa’ (released on Hot Casa earlier this year). The timelessness of this soulful, ground-breaking funk jazz lost masterpiece ‘Night Illusion’ leads to comparisons with James Mason’s legendary lost classic album Rhythm of Life, with his unique individualism and intensity hinting at the boogie funk of groups such as Mass Production and Slave so loved by artists such as Moodyman and Theo Parrish. While Fela Kuti is now a cultural icon of Nigerian music throughout the world, the recent crossover success of William Onyeabor shows just how much undiscovered Nigerian music remains waiting to be explored outside of the country.

Tee Mac was born in Lagos, the son of a Nigerian princess and a Swiss diplomat. He picked up the flute at age 7 and ten years later was studying classical musical in Switzerland under his uncle the composer J.J. Direndirger. Returning to Lagos, Nigeria in 1970 he formed the heavyweight afro rock group Tee Mac and Afro Collection (which included Johnny Haastrup on keyboards and The Lijadu Sisters on vocals). This band was famously joined by the legendary Cream drummer Ginger Baker who came to Nigeria to play with them in 1971 (captured in the film Ginger Baker in Africa).

At age 24, Tee Mac moved to Germany where he co-wrote and recorded the European disco group Silver Convention (whose ‘Fly Robin Fly’ became number one in the USA charts). This enabled him to return to Nigeria where he formed his own label SKJ Records to release his self-financed album Night Illusion, as well as buying two nightclubs and also investing in a number of mineral mining companies! Tee Mac continues to live in Lagos today and travels the world as a composer – one of whose pieces is The City of Mer Kailash (2009), a two-hour ballet featuring over 60 dancers and a 100+ piece orchestra. Toronto, ON - "Go West, Young Man, Go West", an expression coined in the 1800s, could easily be rephrased and applied to Juno Award Winner Justin Rutledge to read, "Go East, Young Man, Go East", as that, quite literally, is what Justin Rutledge has done. His new album, aptly titled EAST, signifies not only his personal transition in moving away from the only city he's ever lived, but also, recording in the east, his first time making an album outside of Toronto. In 2015, ready to make a change, Justin pulled-up roots in Toronto and replanted himself on the eastern shores of Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County. Leaving Toronto as a home was monumental for Justin, "Toronto is where I was born, but for some reason it became an increasingly foreign place to me. I knew I had to leave the city." Inspired by the beauty and serenity of these new rural surroundings, his 7th studio album was born, as Justin headed further east to Nova Scotia, marking the first time he has recorded outside of Ontario. "I've recorded in LA with my band Early Winters, but I hadn't yet recorded a solo album anywhere other than Toronto-I wasn't sure why, so I headed for Halifax." Justin had known producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Ledwell for some time and was already familiar with the home studio Daniel had set up in Lake Echo, Nova Scotia. Having guested on the song 'Bring Me A Rose' from Jenn Grant's award winning album Compostela which was recorded in Lake Echo (Grant and Ledwell are husband and wife) and with Daniel's encouragement to get out of his comfort zone, Justin trekked along the Trans-Canada to Nova Scotia. "I wanted to create an album in which a different geography served as the backdrop. I wanted to record on the east coast, use musicians from the east coast, even master the album on the east coast. Thinking of a title for the album was easy." The songs on EAST see Justin embracing new styles, from the gospel tinged 'The Great Ascension', to the lo-fi lament of 'Queen Street Lost'. Not lost, however, are the country-tinged pop songs like 'The Old Oak' and 'Blue Jeans'. Of course, the hushed voice and the intricate storytelling remain, making EAST Justin's most accomplished album to date. Rutledge's other albums include No Never Alone (2004), The Devil On A Bench In Stanley Park (2006), Man Descending (2008), The Early Widows (2010) and Daredevil, his homage to The Tragically Hip (2014). He has twice been nominated for a Juno Award, and twice been long-listed for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize. Valleyheart, Rutledge's first release on Outside Music, earned the Juno Award for Roots Album of the year in 2014.

Description: When Drakkar Nowhere rows itself out toward the exploratory sonic sea upon which their debut album so gracefully sails, it’s not just that their destination is undefined; it’s that the very concept of a destination, as reflected in their music, is itself something indefinable. Drakkar Nowhere capture the wind in their sails with a sound that’s boundless, expansive and, perhaps, guided only by the light of the sun and stars. That Drakkar Nowhere ended up somewhere at all is itself more a result of circumstance than careful course-charting. The history of the album traces back to the summer of 2012, when Daniel Collás (Phenomenal Handclap Band) and Morgan Phalen (Favored Nations, Diamond Nights) found themselves creating new music in the kitchen of a rented apartment in Stockholm, Sweden. Their new project caught the ears of nearby musicians, including members of Dungen and The Amazing, and before long, this extended family of international musicians were recording the songs that would firmly put them on the path to nowhere – Drakkar Nowhere, that is.

Both Collás and Phalen took inspiration from their Swedish surroundings – in particular, the enchanted forests that surround the neighborhoods of Bagarmossen and Midsommarkransen. And given the talents and histories of the collaborating musicians, it’s no surprise that the everevolving shadow of what we might broadly call Swedish psychedelia should perfume the proceedings as well. Collás and Phelan also took the recordings to New York and Los Angeles, where new surroundings and influences could intertwine into the musical flora and fauna. When in LA, the band even got a hero of theirs, unsung 70s singer-songwriter Ned Doheny, on board for “Higher Now.” Some light was recently shed on Doheny’s music from the 70s when Numero Group released the Doheny compilation Separate Oceans a couple years back. To those who have discovered his fantastic body of work, his warm, breezy Malibu vocals are instantly recognizable on “Higher Now.” One thing is surprising – and what makes the Drakkar Nowhere album one that benefits from repeat listens – is how unobtrusive all of these influences are on the album’s ultimate sound. Drakkar Nowhere present a combination of influences – cosmic jazz, syrupy soul and mutated prog among them – in such an effortless manner that they don’t really feel like “influences” at all. As a result, Drakkar Nowhere have built an album that may have listeners ears recalling the crystalline harmonies of the Brothers Gibb more often than it does Träd, Gräs and Stenar. Original Ghanaian Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1967-1981
Ghanaian highlife master and “The Golden Voice Of Africa”, Pat Thomas, returns with his first full career retrospective on Strut this Autumn, covering his late ‘60s big band highlife recordings through to the “burger highlife” movement of the early ‘80s. Growing up with music around him (“my uncle, King Onyina, was an important highlife musician”), Thomas was inspired to become a singer after hearing vocalist Joss Aikins: “He sang with Broadway Dance Band and Decca in Ghana chose him to sing with any group that came into their studios.” When a new incarnation of Broadway Dance Band was created in ‘67, led by Ebo Taylor, Thomas received his first big break. “Ebo started to write new songs. I added the lyrics and sang them and it worked well.” The partnership with Taylor would become one of the enduring forces in Ghanaian music during the ‘70s, creating a fresh, progressive new highlife sound. They played with the Blue Monks band before, in 1974, forming Sweet Beans with the backing of Ghana’s Cocoa Marketing Board: “The album, ‘False Lover’, was the first under my own name and my first for Gapophone,” Pat reflects. “Reggae was “on” at that time Jimmy Cliff was the guy - so I tried reggae fusions and brought in some soul.” The album established Thomas across Ghana. Sweet Beans disbanded but the musicians stayed together as Marijata. “The guys initially used Jewel Ackah as their vocalist but they involved me and I re-vocalled the album. This became the ‘Pat Thomas Introduces Marijata’ LP. At that time, I would go to George Prah at Gapophone to ask for money and he would say, ‘if you want me to pay you, go and write a song!’ So, tracks like ‘Coming Home’ came about that way, written on the spot.” A second Marijata album followed before a damaging coup in Ghana in 1979. “Jerry Rawlings’ “house-cleaning” was designed to stop corruption but it seriously damaged our country’s music culture.” Thomas left for Berlin and stayed true to his highlife roots, becoming the first Ghanaian to record highlife there. “In Ghana, people ex-pats living in Germany called themselves ‘burgers’, so the scene became ‘burger highlife’.” Thomas travelled to Togo and London, before settling in Canada: “I ended up there for ten years playing for universities, Ghanaian societies and festivals.” Pat is now back with Kwashibu Area Band and touring worldwide: “Today, highlife has become the world’s music and I am proud to still bring it to so many people.” ‘Coming Home’ is released on 2CD, 3LP and digital and features exclusive photos and a full interview with Pat Thomas.

In late 2014 Panabrite’s Norm Chambers began stitching together recently collected bits of sounds and field recordings to create a sort of epic travelogue of ideas and movement, where things end up in stark contrast to how they begin. Initially Disintegrating Landscape was one continuous 47-minute piece, but has now been edited for cassette; each side a stand-alone piece with themes that recur throughout and carry on the idea of it as one larger piece. Chambers did a fair amount of traveling down the West Coast during the summer of 2014, collecting photos of many coastal regions and reflecting on the idea of the gradual decay of land into the ocean; of continuous movement and evolution. The music reflects this notion with its underlying bed of familiarity, yet the turbulence near the top is constantly shifting and eventually swallows everything.

Berlin-based duo Driftmachine returns with another striking piece of music. “Colliding Contours” is a shape-shifting album made from kosmische, dub, Industrial and Avant-garde elements. It’s all held together by tense grooves and a post-club, eerie electronic atmosphere. The latest work of Driftmachine offers a complex dialogue between genres and music styles, transcending the familiar by generating a peculiar mood through its unique take on modular synthesis and its obsessive bass-structures and detailed rhythmic patterns. Within the haunted electronic spaces of “Colliding Contours” one can find a geometry made of dub, jazz and industrial techno lines, intersecting at ominous intervals; an unsettling companion for a late night trip or a tangled state of mind. Following their third album Imaginary Third (2014) comes this live album recorded during their most recent European tour. Gatefold 2LP and DL. While only active for a matter of years, The Van Pelt have grown into something of a cult favourite since they original disbanded in 1997. And rightly so – even in that short period of time their music evolved considerably from the charged, proletysing punk of their debut album Stealing From Our Favourite Thieves to the quiet, creeping, minimal music of sophomore release Sultans of Sentiment. Recorded on the first date of the tour – a private gig for friends in Ferrara, Tramonto came about not as a grandiose, self-congratulatory effort, nor a betweenalbums stop-gap, as is the case with so many live albums. “A big Supertramp-meets-10cc, ‘70s pop sound.” -- NPR Longtime friends Adan Jodorowsky (Adanowsky) and Xavi Polycarpe (Gush) have been musical co-conspirators for some time, working together previously on Jodorowsky’s acclaimed 2014 album ADA. Adan & Xavi Y Los Imanes is a dusky and beautiful exploration of mutual appreciation and mutual heartache, with both Adan and Xavi inspiring one another to new artistic heights. To fully capture the sound that the men were looking for—warm, intimate pop with a wintry edge—they recorded directly to eight track tape, in the living room of a castle in the French countryside that belonged to a 19th century piano maker. The proof is in the mix as Adan & Xavi sounds rich and raw, delivering performances reminiscent of Harry Nilsson, Badfinger and the guitar work of George Harrison (who, incidentally, gave Jodorowsky his first guitar lesson as a child). Both men are native to Paris, though Jodorowsky spends a fair amount of his time in Mexico City. As with the swooning Spanish-language romanticism of his 2011 album Amador, the Mexican influence feeds the lyrical direction of Adan’s tracks on Adan & Xavi. Xavi’s are primarily sung in English, as he has done with Gush since the beginning, including 2010’s Everybody’s God (nominated for a French Grammy). Adan & Xavi is a lovely work that maintains an easy rhythm found only between old friends. Though their influences and recording methods are rooted in the past, Adan & Xavi Y Los Imanes is a throughly modern take on classic song craft.
