“Calling it Adrian Thaws is saying you don’t really know me,” says Tricky, explaining the title of his 11th album. “So many times people have tried to put a finger on me and every album I go to a different place.” It’s typical of one of music’s most unpredictable characters that the first album to bear his birth name is one of his least introspective. Adrian Thaws is a vivid, attention-grabbing set of songs which roamfrom hip hop to house, jazz to blues, rock to reggae. It was recorded in Tricky’s home studio in London, where he’s living again after almost two decades in New York, Los Angeles and Paris, and features an international crew of collaborators: Francesca Belmonte, Nneka, Mykki Blanco, Bella Gotti, Tirzah, Blue Daisy and Oh Land. It’s designed to be played loud. “I suppose this is my club/hip hop album,” he says. “I’ve only heard my music a few times in a club but I grew up in clubs from when I was 14: blues parties, hip hop clubs, a few raves. I’m not known for doing club music but this album has some club tracks on it — well, what I would consider club music.”

Tricky makes complicated music because Adrian Thaws has had a complicated life. Born in 1968, he grew up in an extended family that was both black and white, urban and rural, containing strong women and volatile men. His choice of cover versions is revealing. Janet Kaye’s 1979 lovers rock classic Silly Games reminds him of his childhood in Bristol’s Knowle West district. London Posse’s 1990 track Gangster Chronicle harks back to his musical apprenticeship with the Wild Bunch and Massive Attack under the name Tricky Kid before TRACKLISTING LP he launched his solo career with 1995’s startling Maxinquaye.

Commonwealth sees the four bandmates disassociating ever so slightly to create an old-school double album sequenced with each member staking out a single side as their own artistic dominion. Designated by the four playing card suits, the essentially solo sides allow for all four members’ work to at last be heard through the prism of individual identity. Ferguson’s opening “Diamond” side showcases his remarkable knack for symphonic pop, Pentland’s “Shamrock” offers a substantial helping of pedal-hoppin’ psych rock, and Murphy’s “Heart” is fit to burst with wit, jangle, and eclectic energy. As if the four-sided concept weren’t challenge enough, Commonwealth finishes with “Forty Eight Portraits,” an ingenious 18-minute pop suite that fills the entirely of Scott’s closing “Spade” side. Ultimately, what makes Commonwealth so special – and so distinctly Sloan – is how the fragmented approach in fact only serves to underscore the veteran band’s extraordinary strengths, showcasing the particular ingredients without ever losing sight of the sum of their parts. The record, their third album, following last year's Wash The Sins Not Only The Face, and their second release of 2014 after a split with Thought Forms in April, marks something of a change of tact for the band. For starters, it's coming out via the band's own new imprint, Nostromo Records, following an amicable split with their previous label Matador. It's also been recorded by the well-worn, expert hands of Steve Albini, no less, at his Chicago studio Electrical Audio following a successful Pledge Music campaign earlier this year. Most significantly, it sees the band stripping back their sound and taking out a lot of the electronic matter, instead forging even more expansive songs (the album's centrepiece is the near-15-minute 'The Jungle') in raw, more live-feeling sonics. 'Blood Teachings' is a good case in point, with its Swans-esque heaving repetition providing a soundbed over which Rachel Davies unfurls a mesmeric vocal, not dissimilar to former Albini collaborator PJ Harvey, building to a razing, fuzzed crescendo. Say the band: "We wanted to create a record that had a level of purity to it. To strip away the layers and loops and see what lay beneath. To keep things naked, unadorned and raw. The three of us, in a room, making noise. We looked to create a more primal record, full of human emotion and sonic intensity. Drawing on themes of endurance, strength, determination and self-actualisation. Themes that have always inspired us but perhaps, only now, a few years down the line, a few years of touring under our belts, we feel we have the confidence and maturity to explore and shout about." The addition of that Onyeabor flair really adds a thump and groove to this song. “Ye Ye (Remix)” by Daphini is slightly darker in tone as compared to the rest of the album, but the pulsing bass really pushes this track forward, which allows the synth sounds to really envelope the sonic environment. What mindset were you in making this record, and was it different than how you thought about making records in the past? Was there something new you wanted to accomplish? PRINTED SIDE UP

There are many similarities between this record and records we made 10 years or so ago. The spirit, the concentration, how we work on the sounds is very delicate. We’re always having fun but at the same time it’s not a crazy party, it’s still very intimate. But there are also differences. On the first album, we worked on a specific sound for that band, with Domenico playing the electronic stuff, in hopes of mixing the traditional Brazilian way of singing and guitar playing with a weird, electronic, new sound. Now, we’re not thinking of that as much, just trying to make something we like and that’s a new way of doing things for us. Before, we wanted to make it sound very new, but now we’re not trying to do that, just trying to do music. The recordings were mostly done in Rio, but in total there were 9 different studios, some in Japan, some in Salvador, some in New York. We just worked with friends, there were like 50 people involved in the record, and more than 30 musicians contribute some sound to it.
Is it important to you to have other people with you during the process? It’s not just important. Without my friends I could not make anything. I’m very shy, I’m very lazy, I get insecure about how people feel when they hear our music. My friends are like fuel, they just make me work. On this record I worked with Pedro Sa, another friend, he’s a guitar player that works with my father, Caetano, right now. The last three albums my father made, he and I produced them. We formed this partnership very easily. He came to me and said, “let’s do another album, your album.” I said I don’t know, but he said, “No no let’s do it! This is the time!” I was just living in Bahia when he came to me and he just drove me to make it. We made it together, we produced the album together and that was amazing--A gift from my friends. I’ve had a lot of fun with this album. Of course it’s very emotional sometimes, but I still like it when I listen to it so I think, “Well that’s ok, let’s put it out.”
Will you play many shows? Right now I don’t have a band together. I spoke to some other people who are drummers and bassists, and they were ready to do it but we haven’t really rehearsed yet. We plan to start playing in February or January. There will be press and there will be radio!

In those early days bands who showed an allegiance to their roots of punk risked social ostracism and worse. And yet this community of outsiders produced the biggest band in the world in 1991. The unforeseen success of Nirvana turned the record label Sub Pop from an underground phenomenon into the key backstory of mainstream music’s must-‐ read tales of the 90s: it became a new Motown: substituting Seattle for Detroit. Kurt Cobain’s death froze this saga into musical history forever more.
While taking nothing away from Nirvana or from Sub Pop, this release presents the complexity of the music scene of the North-‐West in its most infamous era. Rather than celebrating the (undeniable) talent of one band, one label, one city, this release ravels up the simple thread of music history and takes pleasure in its more tangled knots. In the late 80s and early 90s, the musical fire raging in Seattle burned so bright that no one could see pinpricks of light dotting the entire state of Washington. Beyond Seattle, the North-‐West skies were similarly ablaze with music and creativity. This compilation features some of the divergent bands emerging out of the North-‐West during this era. Intensely researched and documented, it features bands who have now disappeared from history, after releasing maybe just a couple of singles, or an album, or never even making it onto vinyl – alongside bands who continue to this day.

Most of these tracks had never been commercially available before this release.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Original Game Soundtrack by Power Glove was originally released on RSD 2014 pink vinyl, and sold out instantly. Many fans missed the chance at grabbing this phenomenal soundtrack so it was decided to do a second version of this incredible score. Invada have been given permission to release this soundtrack on double black 140 gram vinyl (unlike the Record Store Day 2014 pink vinyl). The music for the video game, a first-person shooter set on a tropical island, was composed by Australian duo Power Glove, who craftily bill themselves as “two lawyers sent back from the streets of future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles 2043. Having served notice of their intent with the ‘Lowtalker EP’ earlier this year, Menace Beach will release a double A-side ‘Tennis Court / Lowtalkin’ on Memphis Industries on 1st September. Just a little bit of background: after several un-treated breakdowns and a subsequent rash decision to relocate to Leeds, Ryan and Liza shacked up with MJ (Hookworms) to re-imagine their crackly 8-track demos. Joining them on the session, were friends Nestor Matthews (Sky Larkin) Matt Spalding, and Robert Lee (Pulled Apart By Horses) who fought their way through Liza’s rats nest of cables and home-made synth modules to blast through the songs during another all-nighter, having so much fun in the process that they all decided to stick around. Both tracks were recorded, produced and mixed in the Spring of this year with MJ at his Suburban Home studios in Leeds. Friend of band Lan Mcardle of Joanne Gruesome was on hand to lend her admirably shouty pipes to both tracks (the line “with nothing in it” in ‘Tennis Court’, and the “lowtalkin’” yell that propels the track of the same name), and where ‘Tennis Court’ shows off Ryan and Liza’s inclination towards fuzzed out, psyched up melody, ‘Lowtalkin’ is a sub-two minute blast of exhilarating noise. Overview: A rare synth classic lovingly reissued, Visions of Dune is French electronic pioneer Bernard Szajner’s 1979
concept album based around Frank Herbert’s cult Dune Trilogy. Remastered from the original tapes and complimented with a new sleeve reimagined by acclaimed Barcelona-based designer Arnau Pi (Young Turks, DJ Kicks), the reissue also Includes two lost pieces from the original sessions left off because EMI considered them to be “too futuristic”! Fittingly, the release of this alternative soundtrack to Dune coincides with the cinema release of award-winning documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune about the failed attempt to adapt the book in the mid-70s by the Chilean director. Often described as the “French Brian Eno”, and like his British counterpart he has a parallel career as a successful visual artist. Before he started recording music Z established himself as the mastermind behind innovative lighting production for Gong, Magma, Oliver Messiasen, Stomu Yamashta and The Who. Later he became a pioneer in laser technology and robotics. Bernard has recently returned to making music after a long absence, inspired by the praise of musicians he has inspired such as Detroit techno icon Carl Craig, who cites Szajner’s music as being in his “all time top ten”.
