Considered “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music” (NPR), Iris DeMent has returned with an album unlike any other in her illustrious career. Featuring original music and melodies by Iris, The Trackless Woods (August 7) sets 18 poems by acclaimed 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to life. Hailed as one of Russia’s finest poets, Akhmatova survived the Bolshevik Revolution, both World Wars and Stalin. She lost family, friends and fellow writers to political killings and labor in the gulags. When Iris randomly stumbled upon Akhmatova’s work in a book of poetry a friend sent as a gift, she was immediately taken by the sorrow and burden of the poems, juxtaposed with Akhmatova’s lightness and transcendence in the face of inhumanity. “Anna’s gift of song is so strong, about alI I had to do was get really quiet and listen,” says Iris. After reading that first poem the melodies began pouring out of her, and before she even fully understood what was driving her, Iris was gathering musicians and friends, including co-producer Richard Bennett (Emmylou Harris, Neil Diamond, Steve Earle), to record The Trackless Woods in her living room over a five-day period. The result is a breathtaking pairing of piano and voice in Iris’ sui generis style with timeless melodies that are deeply rooted in the American South. The project also fulfilled a long yearned-for desire to connect with her adopted daughter’s culture and history. Iris and her husband adopted their daughter from Siberia in 2005, and she says “I’d never have made this record were it not for her.”

SMALL FEET
FROM FAR ENOUGH AWAY EVERYTHING SOUNDS LIKE THE OCEAN
bark153 CD/LP+MP3
STREET DATE: AUGUST 7, 2015 It seems baffling that a songwriter as adept as Stockholm’s Simon Stålhamre, the gentleman behind Small Feet, is only now releasing his first record. Things apparently don’t get finished when one’s interest is always sprinting to the next experiment, and Stålhamre’s stumble towards discovery began around the time he decided to quit school at 15. He employed TV as his academic mentor – learning English from the American shows that dominated his small country’s schedules – while, all the time, building up a catalogue of songs.

Blessed with twin talents from an early age, Stålhamre’s propensity for vanishing acts tended to overcome his flair for songwriting: whatever wonders he’d conjured up in his isolation seemed destined to remain hidden. By the time he met Jacob Snavely – an ex-pat American musician who started to nudge Stålhamre toward focusing more energy on his songs – the Swede had spent time as a nurse, a fly-poster, and a café worker, and was about to enroll in a course to become a city bus driver. Encouraged by Snavely, Stålhamre’s artistic emancipation was spurred on by the inheritance of one of a cluster of 18th century cabins on Södermalm, an island in central Stockholm. Owned by the government, the cabins are leased to artists in a typically Swedish gesture of social democracy, and Stålhamre’s uncle passed his contract to the cabin (named Kvastis) on to his musical nephew. Stålhamre converted the humble building into a recording studio for the band he assembled, with Snavely on bass alongside drummer Christopher Cantillo. It soon came to represent both refuge and breeding ground for Stålhamre’s prodigious creativity. Kvastis’ inspiration, coupled with Cantillo and Snavely’s assistance, helped Stålhamre finally discover an energy within him that even he couldn’t self-sabotage. Together, the trio created a brilliant debut album, From Far Enough Away Everything Sounds Like The Ocean, a vivid sweep of imagination, with each song streaking the blackness with the brilliance of their homeland’s aurora borealis. It’s definitely been worth waiting for.

LP-MQ-004 $18.99 EXPORT: WORLDWIDE
Nick Thorburn (aka Nick Diamonds) is a Canadian musician, composer and producer best known for starting and co-fronting the cult indie rock band The Unicorns when he was still a teenager. The band’s first full-length album Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? was named one of the Top 10 Albums by Pitchfork in 2003, receiving critical praise from around the world. After only one year of touring, the band imploded on stage in Texas in 2004, due to internal friction. Thorburn immediately went on to form the band Islands, signing with Anti- Records and eventually releasing 5 full length studio albums and touring the world, with appearances at festivals as diverse as Coachella, Primavera Sound and La Route Du Rock. Over the years Thorburn has released more records, collaborating with various artists on projects like Mister Heavenly (with Honus Honus of Man Man), El-P, Human Highway, Reefer, and others. While City Of Quartz is Diamonds’ first solo release since 2011’s highly-praised I Am An Attic, he’s kept busy fronting Islands, playing 2014’s reunion shows with his first band The Unicorns, and contributing the theme and original music to the hit podcast “Serial.” • Full North American Tour booked for September – October. Includes Pop Montreal, Midpoint Music Festival, Pygmalion Festival and more. • 180 gram vinyl with download card

New Zealand’sThe Phoenix Foundation are all set to return with their new and sixth studio album Give Up Your Dreams. It’s a shrewd and vibrant reminder that in The Phoenix Foundation’s gloriously absurd world of Technicolour pop, it’s the challenges you set yourself that reap the greatest rewards. “Give Up Your Dreams could sound like a defeat but it represents something quite defiant, joyous and celebratory” exclaims co-frontman Samuel Scott of the record’s infectious rhythmic driven sound and optimistic feel. Channelling previous album Fandango’s beauteous side, but this time fuelled by a spit ball of irrepressible energy, Give Up Your Dreams feels like the band’s most contemporary offering yet. With the new addition of drummer Chris O’Connor, the album was written taking its lead from the rhythm section for the very first time; paving the way for an all new creative process. “I was convinced we had to have a different sounding record,” explains Scott’s counterpart singer/guitarist Lukasz Buda. “So we completely removed any trace of acoustic guitar. It was important to leave room for the band to take it somewhere else and make way for a new vitality.” Thematically and lyrically the group typically took inspiration from various of sources. The dazzling title-track is a frank deglamourisation of life on the road spurred on by a conversation with dear friend, collaborator, and fellow New Zealander Lawrence Arabia. The energetic ‘Mountain’ is the ultimate counterpoint; an afro-kraut groove with layers of Television-inspired guitars and dreamscapes about the 'money men' controlling the world. ‘Playing Dead’ nearly didn’t make it further than the cutting room floor but was revived thanks to the photographs in a 1950s Time Life essay on the Ona people of Tierra Del Fuego in southern Chile and their ghost rituals. Elsewhere in 'Jason' Luke sings about both the mother of his children and his ‘band wife’ (Samuel Scott) being struck down with sciatica and being reliant on string painkillers to function, touching on the fear of ageing in the process. Album closer 'Myth' was inspired by the writings of St. Isidore of Seville who in the 19th Century attempted to compile all human knowledge. “After 15 years together, this album feels like a total rebirth to us" reveals Buda "it's uplifting feel comes as an act of defiance against all our fears in life.” Take The Phoenix Foundation’s advice then: give up your dreams and good things will happen to you too. Scott concludes “It’s a mantra about letting go, worrying less, and enjoying your reality instead of always wanting more.”

House of 909 The Children We Were LP on 12” Vinyl, August 7
In 1997, London trio House of 909 released The Children We Were , an album of rolling deep house gems that were as evocative as they were posh. The tracks were laced with vocals and the subject matter dealt with youth....and leaving it. Over the years, Cascine developed an affinity for the record, connecting with its softfocus approach to house music. This summer Cascine will reissue The Children We Were in deluxe, limited vinyl form. The material has been remastered, the artwork redone and the record repackaged. It's an undeniably special body of work.

Seattle, WA's favorite garage punks WIMPS join the Kill Rock Stars family with their new 5-song cassette EP Super Me! Wimps have spent the last few years gaining fans up and down the West Coast with their insanely catchy songs and ridiculously fun live show and now they're ready to take this shit to the next level! CRITICAL PRAISE FOR WIMPS: "Frills are not in this trio’s desired arsenal. What is, however, is powerful music that pushes the listener with a combination of humor, attitude and a flare for the musicaldramatic" - KEXP "Despite what you’ve heard from us in the past, “punk rock is” [not] “bullshit,” and Wimps are living proof." - Seattle Weekly "Like the Modern Lovers, the group's brand of punk is rooted in simple elements and an outsider aesthetic." - Willamette Week "A party band without ever adopting the whip-it parlance of notable local acts, their stage presence destroys all notions of rock pretense with raucous howls and grooving bass lines." - Portland Mercury

P: "I'd like to say when it started off I liked it very much indeed. And then it goes into this music which seems.. 'disjointed' I felt, and then the sort of interruptive noises came in. And that bothered me." F: "More or less the same. I found the beginning very good. Very restful and I enjoyed it. When the beating started, with the rhythm, then is when.. it's beyond my comprehension. And there must be some merit in doing that sort of thing, but I can't understand it." P: "I couldn't imagine dancing to that, or even 'moving' to it in a way, so I find it disturbing, yes. You hear some lovely music, I feel, underneath it all. You're just beginning to enjoy that and then you get this top lot coming over, which is interrupting and disturbing it, you know, and you think 'I want to hear more of the other' because that sounds as if it's good." E: "Well that was interesting. It's something I could listen to, which is something I can't always do with techno, but erm, what I don't like is anything with banging beats in the background, that's just me. But the actual different sounds are interesting I think. It's Just that I didn't like things that go thud, thud, thud. Yes, it's quite.. for me it's not excruciating." F: "The beats were more rhythmic in this one, so they were not so disturbing. I understand a little bit what was going on, but I enjoyed the background music." E: "Again, this one's a bit too sort of thudding for my taste, but the actual tune of it, yes, that's interesting. Not something I would 'choose' to listen to. It's too heavy, the drumming stuff, whatever it is, the bass. But I like the tune part of it, it's quite pleasant. Sort of slightly bell-like sound. Quite nice, sort of like dream music or something? I just can't take all the big beats." P: "Again, the bottom bit's lovely. It's really nice that bit. This isn't bad. I quite like this actually. I like this. I like this far more than the other, because you could listen to this and imagine that you're walking somewhere. You can imagine scenery around you to this one. I can relate much more and enjoy this one. You would sit and let your mind wander. I think you could be in nature with this music, that's my feeling about it. I like this one, do you F?" F: "Yes, I think this music would go very well with some film or television, erm, provided it's not very loud." E: "I like that one, it makes me think it could be like the background to some sort of film thing, but also it's like a dream sequence sort of thing." P: "I really liked that one - the end one I really liked. Are there any instruments at all?" PLANET MU RECORDS WWW. PLANET.MU TWITTER.COM/PLANETMURECORDS DISTRIBUTION: REDEYE / LORI MILLER

Gatefold CD / LP (green & blue vinyl, 500 only.) Debut album from Mammoth Penguins, the new band fronted by Emma Kupa, formerly of Standard Fare. An exhilarating collection of indie anthems, with Emma's candid songwriting and heartfelt vocals at the fore. The songs are bold, loud and outrageously catchy, with lyrics that hit just the right chord, exploring the burgeoning responsibilities of being in your late 20s/early 30s. Emma relished the switch to guitar in Mammoth Penguins, allowing her the space to deliver her trademark soaring vocals and to indulge in the occasional mean guitar solo. Recorded by producer Owen Turner (Magoo, Factory Floor), Hide and Seek captures the band at the age they're at right now, reflecting on different aspects of being in their late twenties.

SUN AND SAIL CLUB is a band that features Bob Balch on guitar (FU MANCHU), Scott Reeder on drums (FU MANCHU, SMILE), Scott Thomas Reeder on bass (KYUSS, FIREBALL MINISTRY, THE OBSESSED) and now punk legend Tony Adolescent (THE ADOLESCENTS) on vocals. On the recording process Balch reveals... "I always wanted to make a record that was punk influenced with big drums and fuzzy guitars. Like 'What if the BAD BRAINS had to play a set on FU MANCHU's gear?'" The end result is a record that sounds massive and inspired. How could it not, given the members involved?

After a re-group the N. Irish rockers are back with a brand new album and a new label. Funded by a very successful Pledge campaign, and features 10 songs mostly written during the down time of the last 12 months, RATN sees the band expand their song writing, monster up their riffs and pull out those big choruses that made their peers like Ricky Warwick, Cormac Neeson and Ginger Wildheart take notice!
“It’s as if the spirits of Thin Lizzy, Cheap Trick and Rose Tattoo have been newly pickled in a cheap whiskey and strapped to a runaway freight train. Only Louder. A wild celebration of good times and bad behaviour this should be the soundtrack to your summer.” Dom Lawson - Classic Rock Magazine 8/10
