It’s original and personal. It transmutes ethereal abstractions into crystalline harmonies and sinuous grooves. It’s music nurtured with the idea of healing, exciting, inspiring, enlightening. Drones, dissonance, warmth, and love.

Even if you’re unfamiliar with Angel Deradoorian’s name, you’re likely familiar with her voice. As the former bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors, her lepidopteran flights helped buoy the Brooklyn-based group. She’s been a member of Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks and sang on Flying Lotus’ “Siren Song.” Her fist song collection, 2009’s Mind Raft EP elicited praise from Pitchfork for being “passionate and lovingly crafted.” The Fader hailed her “zen weed energy” and “moody dervish spirals.”

But her debut LP, The Expanding Flower Planet reflects a remarkable creative journey. The title came from a tapestry on the wall in front of Deradoorian’s workstation—a Chinese embroidered image of a flower mandala.

“It started to represent to me the growing consciousness of the human mind in the world today,” Deradoorian says. “So the first song I wrote, which I felt appropriate for the album, was called Expanding Flower Planet and represents this desire to broaden the mind and it's capabilities beyond what we are told it can do.

Others imitate the past and others divine inspiration and transmit it elsewhere.

This is the latter instance. If you listen close enough, you can detect faint hints of Alice Coltrane and Can, Terry Riley, and Dorothy Ashby. A new world springs from ancient traditions—with East Indian, Middle Eastern, traditional Japanese musical inspiration aligned with Deradoorian’s singular orbit.

Recorded in various locales over a period of several years, sessions began from scratch in Baltimore, 2011, before moving to her studio in LA. Some tracking was done in a church. Extra tracks were recorded at The Topaz Chamber, which belongs to Deradoorian’s friend, Kenny Gilmore. This is an album so refulgent that it actually sounds like it was made in a Topaz chamber.

Roughly 90 percent was written and performed solely by Deradoorian, with assists from drummers Jeremy Hyman and Michael Lockwood, guest vocalist Niki Randa, Arlene Deradoorian and Gilmore, who helped the songs breathe.

It’s essentially the offspring of a labyrinthine odyssey of self-exploration. In the course of cutting it, Deradoorian realized a more profound communion with music than she’d ever experienced. It’s salient in the songs, which glow and warp, burn brightly and float gracefully past sun and assorted stars.

“It seemed endless, but eventually the shift occurred and it was like a revelation,” Deradoorian describes the epiphany. “I was incredibly grateful for when that day came. It was the first time I really had to force myself to be patient and understand that good things will take time. It won't all happen when you want it to. It'll happen when it's supposed to—when you're truly ready.”

At the source of the music of Rastafari is the figurehead master drummer and leader Count Ossie, who first brought the deeply spiritual nyabinghi and burro rhythms, heard and played at sacred Rastafarian grounation (reasoning) sessions, into popular Jamaican music through his many collaborations and performances with artists – from The Skatalites to The Folks Brothers – and producers, including Clement Dodd, Prince Buster and Harry Mudie.

At the start of the 1970s Count Ossie formed the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari with saxophonist Cedric Brooks, which immediately became the most significant group of the Rastafari faith, bringing together authentic rasta nyabinghi drumming together with spiritual and avant-garde jazz influences of Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler into a truly unique and groundbreaking sound.

From the earliest proto-rasta beginnings on vinyl, Lord Lebby’s 1955 mento recording ‘Etheopia’, through to the raw, afro-jazz roots sounds of Count Ossie to the deep and heavy roots reggae of the 1970s (Johnny Clarke, Earth & Sound, Roy Ashanti of the Congos and others), this album covers nearly 30 years of revolutionary music.

The Natural World Street Date: August 21, 2015 Land Lines is an impossible decade, some gap in history where the tines of early electric pianos shimmer in echo chambers, baroque cellos thrum minor chords, and modern percussive rhythms build with surgical precision, all culminating in sparing, angular pop melodies that find new creative spaces in an otherwise overpopulated musical landscape.

Land Lines arose from the ashes of Matson Jones, when Martina Grbac, Anna Mascorella, and Ross Harada regrouped and began crafting new songs. After releasing their self-titled LP on Denver’s Cash Cow Records, Anna left the group to attend graduate school; James Han, who had been recording and touring with Nathaniel Rateliff and Gregory Alan Isakov, joined and helped shape the new sonic direction of the band.

In early 2014, Land Lines recruited Xandy Whitesel to record/mix and TW Walsh (Sufjan Stevens, The Shins, David Bazan) to master a second LP, The Natural World. With sultry songs that saunter, thrust, and linger, The Natural World is a treasure trove of heart breaking songs of love, loss, and human nature and ushers in the next era of Land Lines’s sonic exploration.

Land Lines has performed at venues such as the Boulder Theatre and Red Rocks Amphitheater, and has shared the stage with artists such as Devotchka, Nathaniel Rateliff, Esme Patterson and Black Heart Procession. In 2015, ahead of their debut on Misra Records, the band performed a show backed by the Colorado Symphony.

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA Emil Amos, the mastermind behind Holy Sons, returns with his second Thrill Jockey release, Fall of Man. The multi-instrumentalist (who counts himself as a member of Om, Grails, and Lilacs & Champagne) carves out new territory on his most diverse release to date, adding more hooks and pop balladry to his songs while still retaining the intimacy and psychological depth of his earlier records. 1970s classic rock has always been a touchstone for Amos, and on Fall of Man he filters those influences through his modern looking-glass to create a deliberate, melancholy album of epic scope, a sonic universe tinged with a soft, slight sadness. The signature darkness and strangeness that Amos has cultivated throughout his career is present on the album, even in its title, which references the myth that humans are powerless and fundamentally flawed while also suggesting that we have reached the autumn of humanity, slowly sowing the seeds of our own destruction. Amos masterfully tucks away these pessimistic themes within some of the most beautifully produced, endlessly listenable songs of his career.

“Mercenary World” walks the line between pop hit and the darker, samplebased recordings Holy Sons is known for. “Out of Sight” shows Amos providing his fans more inviting songs without abandoning his outsider ideology that has made him such a respected cult figure. The classic rock influence seeps into “I Told You” with Deep Purple-styled organs and guitar solos that bring to mind Rush playing in a stadium with the lights down.

Amos plays every instrument on the record himself, except on the rollicking “Aged Wine,” which features Brian Markham on bass and Adam Bulgasem on drums, who have played live with Holy Sons at recent gigs with Sleep, The Mountain Goats, and more.

Gagakirise is the Tokyo based duo of Sachio Yoshizawa on guitar and Ryo Inoue on drums. They are a major force in the Japanese underground since 2006, having released 2 albums and a split with Juiceboxxx as well as touring the US several times as well as Japan with the likes of Black Pus and others. We’re proud to present brand new work from Chicago-based sound artist Olivia Block in the form of “Aberration of Light.” An accomplished composer of electro-acoustic music, Block has premiered her work all over the globe in the form of both solo and collaborative live performances, sound installations at highly-regarded art institutions, and lectures at academic establishments. This conceptually inspired work was originally conceived in 2011 as a four-speaker soundtrack for a collaboration with two expanded cinema artists using manipulated light from film-less 35mm projectors. For NNA’s 82nd release, the artist offers us a 31-minute reworked version of this material for the cassette format. In essence, this piece is as much about the absence of sound as much as the presence of it. Slowly materializing from total silence, Block utilizes acoustic sounds, including various mechanical sound recordings of 35mm projectors, blended with a palette of electronics to create intricately assembled fields of sonic depth. The result is richly ominous without being overtly aggressive, as the compositional arc of the piece follows a swelling, almost respiratory motion of expanding and contracting. The dynamic nature of Aberration of Light is enhanced by Block’s delicate use of white noise as a textural guide, calling attention to the acoustic sounds at its valleys, and overwhelming the listener with ferocity and harshness at its peaks. As the piece progresses, harmonic tonalities begin to emerge, reinforced by the use of clarinet and bass clarinet from fellow Chicagoan musicians James Falzone and Jason Stein, respectively, seamlessly integrating themselves into the mass of electronics. The quieter moments of the piece command deeper listening, to the point where the sounds of one’s own listening environment become indistinguishable from the recording, calling to mind Cage’s ideas on the impossibility of true silence. Block claims to bring an emotional element to her work which can be both heard and felt through the delicacy and dynamic nature of the recording, further deepened by a brilliant use of control, precision, power, and patience.

The use of the word “mixtape” in the title of this release is no coincidence. New York City based composer and performer Patrick Higgins has appointed NNA with a wholly original concept in the presentation of New Music – a “mix” or sampling of personal experimentations spanning from 2009 to the present day, intended specifically for the cassette format.

Higgins, perhaps best known for his guitar work in avant-garde music group Zs and production work with Future-Past Studios, is able to accurately demonstrate his versatility as both a composer and performer through this diverse collection of recording studies. Very little territory is left uncharted as Higgins makes use of piano, harpsichord, synthesizer, guitar, violin, sampler, computer processing, and even group ensemble to communicate his unique musical vision. Bringing a genuinely modern voice to composition, the artist draws on contemporary pop culture influence (underground art rock, independent pop, noise) along with nods to 60’s minimalism (Riley, Glass, Meredith Monk) and classical Western electro-acoustic composition. The studies on this release range from the highly dissonant to the more consonant as Higgins blends found sound and electro-acoustic texture with harmonic notes, creating further originality by combining elements of improvisation with written score. Pieces like “Pattern Select” blast apart with pointillistic, colorful synth programming that builds its power through the precise use of dissonance, recalling the work of Babbitt, Boulez, and the French pioneers of early musique concrete. The “Curves, Points, Lines” series of tracks demonstrates the inventive studio layering of unorthodox acoustic instrument sounds, as Higgins dissects the intricacies of the various sounds made by the violin and rearranges them into something completely new. “Live At Oberlin” brings the music outside of the studio into the arena of performance, as Higgins lends his abilities to a group improvisation setting, using guitar and laptop to build new sonic worlds together with the Mivos Quartet on string instruments. “Social Death Mixtape” succeeds at showcasing Higgins’ prowess not only as a musician, but as a generally well-rounded artist, whether its as a composer and arranger, instrumentalist, live performer, electronic producer, or studio engineer. The experience of this release is further enhanced by the originality of creating an “audio sketchbook” for the modern composer by tapping into one of the earliest and most classical essences of the cassette tape medium - the “mix.”

Holy Ghost Party Bayou Music Holy Ghost Party is the Baltimorebased duo of Zachary Utz and Dave Jacober. Bayou Music, their first release on Ehse Records, showcases the duo’s ability to improvise suspiciously-structured compositions. Influenced equally by early 20th-century Delta Blues, 1970s kraut electronica, and Indian Ragas, Bayou Music is blue collar psychedelia, a naïve but skilled mutation of single notes into swampy disarray. While the music consists only of guitar, drums, and vocals, Bayou Music subverts the derivative cliches of “rock and roll” by annihilating the analogue sounds with heavily distorted effects. The sound is complemented by the merging of eastern influence and American Blues that is as hypnotic as it is unique. “Jailhouse” is a cheeky contemporary rocking soul and Motown-influenced number about the non-negotiables in relationships. “Hole In My Heart” is a classic rocker-in-the-making that warns the listener about the consequences of causing the recipient grief.

“Shine That Song Like Gold,” a collaboration with Grammy-winning lyricist Terry Abrahamson, tells the story of the fabled “lost” Robert Johnson song. The sound is best described as the collective offspring of Tom Waits, Martha & The Vandellas, Motown Rhythm Section, Keith Richards and Billy Gibbons (with David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch filming.)

He's concurrently savaged and celebrated pop music since 2005, beginning with his wide-ranging 8. I'm Bill Murray early output and moving on to increasingly focused work like the synth-devoted With Trumpets Flaring, or the 9. Problems Theme Part 2 more narrative-minded Return to Crystal Skull Mountain, or his hip-hop forays Common Grackle and Big 10. Last Drag Huge Truck. With each new project Pep's managed to reduce what can often soupy genres into a dope sauce that is unmistakably his own. Though his shortest to date, Chorus! Chorus! Chorus! – the title itself a wink at critics who complain about the objective spartan-ness of a Gregory Pepper song – manages to feel more thorough than those predecessors, mostly thanks to Pep's devotion to and evocation of a particular sound, a particular time and place.

On Chorus! Chorus! Chorus!, Pep happily dates himself, unabashedly outing himself as a 90s kid, a preteen for whom the moody earnestness of grunge was the pop music of the time. That scene seemed to off itself along with Cobain, and the next wave of power pop that came next was just as self-loathing, maybe even more cynical, but wasn't afraid to celebrate, mock, and pervert that angst. Chorus!'s conversation between large, muzzy rhythm guitar and piercing solos can seem like a direct, studied reference to Weezer's "Blue Album," but that association makes for more a surface hint of other like elements that have been operating in Pep's music all along: big dick guitar work, vocal harmonies and guitarmonies, and songcraft that all come off as confident but are ultimately there in support of an introspective, self-deprecating, sometimes even smart point of view. Chorus! sounds like the album Weezer should have made after Pinkerton, if Rivers' hadn't lost his nerve and Matt hadn't left: elusively confessional, proudly nostalgic, and as fun as crashing a shopping cart when you're drunk with plans on getting drunker.

In an indie music landscape that has been getting increasingly self-serious, Pep for years has been cultivating his own brand of ribaldry that's kin the power pop and pop punk that hit its commercial stride during his adolescence. Chorus! at once serves as a direct, nostalgic homage to that primordial scene while also carrying on and refining the monkeyshine Pep's been up to all along.

Black Fjord OVERVIEW: With every passing decade since Kaleidoscope's demise, the band’s recorded legacy has continued to rank amongst the most highly prized artefacts that define the psychedelic genre. Their seminal debut album from 1967, `Tangerine Dream` is now considered to be one of the finest examples of English psychedelia with original copies of this album fetching in excess of £1000.

Similarly 1969’s heavier edged follow-up ‘Faintly Blowing’ and 1970’s ‘From Home to Home’ are also fetching hefty sums.

The two tracks on this 7" are unreleased alternative mixes from the band’s own personal archives that have laid unheard for over 45 years – that is until now! Discovered only recently in in a dusty corner of lead singer Peter Daltrey's attic (along with some original stage costumes) Peter explains how he acquired these now priceless artefacts: "After a long day-and-into-the-night recording at the Philips/Fontana Studio No 1 at Marble Arch, the band would request acetates of the day’s work to listen to at home. Dick Leahy (Philips/ Fontana 60's A&R Legend) was always involved in the arrangements and instrumentation of each track in consultation with us. So at the end of the session, the engineer would dub down a mix of the track for us and then overnight we would go away and listen to the arrangements which (although almost always in mono) still gave us a fair idea of what the finished track would sound like. At the next session we would then pow-wow in the control room with a chain smoking Dick and come to an agreement on changes for overdub embellishments that might be required. Thus these acetates were an invaluable tool in helping us hone and craft each track and refine the Kaleidoscope Sound!"

Both tracks collected here: ‘Black Fjord’ and ‘If You So Wish’ have been taken from the band’s widely lauded second album: 'Faintly Blowing' and feature the first 'new' material that has surfaced from the band in close on 25yrs. The version of ‘Black Fjord’ features a band in the full throws of sonic experimentation with the vocals heavily drenched in reverb giving the impression of a band recording in some gigantic cathedral-like echo chamber!!

Whilst the version of ‘If You So wish’ sees lead singer Peter Daltrey providing a tentative guide vocal during an orchestral session which provides a wonderful insight into the development of the track, although obviously not originally intended for commercial release.

Fine attention has also been paid to the packaging which comes as a 7" foldout sleeve which reproduces the original artwork from the inner and outer gatefold album sleeve. Limited to just 500 copies it also comes hand numbered and pressed on beautiful coloured vinyl, housed and protected by a PVC sleeve.
