Village Green is a burgeoning British independent label reshaping the landscape of minimalism, classical and electronic music. Its diverse roster boasts some of the most forward thinking modern composers working in the UK & Europe today. With roots firmly set in the world of soundtrack styled atmospherics the label explores the fertile ground where classical and minimalist composition collides with contemporary production. With an obsession for high production values, incredible musicianship and traditional and contemporary recording techniques each release is drenched in texture, atmosphere, emotion and melody making this label’s output a must have for discerning listeners of music for the heart and head.

“Brooklyn label, Beyond Beyond Is Beyond, are rapidly building up an international reputation. The imprint’s roster is chock full of dreamers, vagabonds, losers and users, people shunted to the fringes of society battling back with guitar, drums, vocals and electricity.” - CLASH Magazine

Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records was founded by two friends in Brooklyn in 2012 with a mission of finding the best “cage-free, magical jams” from the Milky Way and beyond. Four years later, mission alive and well, BBiB has around 30 unique releases, from artists across the planet, which run the gamut from psychedelic pop to ambient drone meditations—raw garage rock to transcendental Krautrock…And beyond!

Jessy Lanza's second album 'Oh No' is addressed to her own constant nervousness. The pressure of music making, which used to calm her nerves, has led to a whole new world of contingencies that stoke the anxiety mill. The exclamation 'Oh No', for Jessy, marks yet another incident of randomness interrupting her tranquillity. All of which seems at odds with the confidence and spontaneity of this second album as well as recent collaborations with the likes of Caribou, DJ Spinn and Morgan Geist and his Galleria project. Made in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, with production partner Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, the plaintive, reverb drizzled mood of the first album has all but given away to a more direct, self-assured and joyful album. As with many artists whose hometown lie off the usual network of cultural hotspots, 'Oh No' is driven positively by the idea of making music that isn't inspired by where she lives. Instead, the album resonates more with the philosophy of experimental pop of Japanese 80s electro outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra and Jessy's breathless, pitched vocals are reminiscent of YMO collaborator Miharu Koshi. Playfully laced with cascading arpeggios, crispy drum machines and breezy songs, 'Oh No' has an infectious energy that has been brewing in her live shows since her first album. As Jessy says ‘I want to make people feel good and I want to make myself feel good’. The album oscillates between the languid, coiled, arpeggiated slow jams of ‘New Ogi’, 'Going Somewhere', 'Begins', 'Could Be U', 'I Talk BB' and the low slung 808 groove of 'Vivica', where Jessy’s vocal gymnastics run wild over minimal drums and synths, and the catchy upbeat boogie of ‘VV Violence’, ‘Never Enough’, 'Oh No' and the high point 'It Means I Love You’ which has a sparse addictive bounce with a pitched up vocal refrain and a nod to Shangaan electro. The trials of dealing with nervousness are also encrypted into the artwork, such as the plants that recur in the sleeve and videos. As Jessy remarked, "I became obsessed with surrounding myself with tropical plants. I've been convinced that the air quality in our house is slowly killing us. It might sound crazy but the plants have made a huge difference." Anxiety and botanical remedies or not, 'Oh No' is a bold second album from Jessy and a marked step forward for her sound. Catch her as she tours with Junior Boys in February, plays EU headline shows from May to June, and in July has a North American Tour.

Taste Taste, Islands’ 6th record, is a muscular, crystalline affair, with the majority of the music electronic, buoyed by drum machines, programming and arpeggiated vintage synths. The songs still flirt with Islands’ bread and butter; evergreens such as ennui, remorse, and a general disenchantment with the modern world hover over the tracks, with lines like “we got so thrown, we felt lost at home” and “steal a little moment, lose it like you own it”, to hammer home the point. The songs cut a wide swath, however, and also go in directions that Islands has never tackled, including police brutality and white male privilege (!). Should I Remain Here, at Sea? Should I Remain Here, at Sea?, Islands’ 7th, is, in many ways, a spiritual sequel to the debut album, 2006’s Return to the Sea; a natural, raw record, stripped down to it’s essentials, performed live off the floor. Reflecting on the decade that has elapsed, SIRHAS kicks off with a darkly funny tartness, tackling religion, race, addiction, and murderous fantasies, but by midpoint, the songs give way to a resigned and doleful melancholia, tackling heartache, numb disillusionment and emotional disorientation through the guise of stupid parrots, the Internet, sea turtles and perhaps the loneliest maritimer to ever sail the seas. It was recorded as spontaneously as could be, with some of the songs captured live in one take, vocals and all.

DAVID BAZAN BLANCO

bark163 CD/LP+MP3/CASSETTE+MP3

STREET DATE: MAY 13, 2016 David Bazan has never had the answers. His first two solo records, 2009’s Curse Your Branches and 2011’s Strange Negotiations lived inside questions. Questions of politics, of relationships, of addiction, and of God. For anyone looking to art to remove doubt, Bazan is not that refuge. With a catalogue that orbits the darkest corners of the human experience, his songs are the tiny pinprick of light, the first breath coming up for air, the rest stop on a trip with no destination.

LP+MP3:

Having spent half of the last decade on tour, away from home, Bazan wrote his new songs from the wandering life of a traveling troubadour. And while there is joy in that life, Blanco is born of its challenges. It’s what, and whom, he leaves at home that you hear on Blanco. Made up of tracks that were previously available in a very limited edition 7” vinyl series called Bazan Monthly, Volume 1 and Volume 2, Bazan started the project to see what kind of songs would come if he sat down in a small bedroom in his basement, propelled by a deadline, kids sleeping upstairs, and wrote from the duality that had blocked him from writing before – what it means to have a home, and have to constantly leave it to make ends meet. These are home songs, songs about returning, songs about not quite knowing what it means to return. They long for home with the ache of a child, and they dissect that longing with a surgeon’s precision. They also signal the end of the organic singer/songwriter mode that he never loved but seemed to be mired in anyway, with delay and distortion binding layers of drum machine and synth together. Guitar comes in as a sweet reminder of where he started, but stays sparse. Blanco continues to ask questions, but they are the questions of a man who has found contentment within them. Who has somehow, against odds, made a home in them. MARKETING NOTES • Pedro The Lion and David Bazan records have scanned over 200,000 copies in the US • David Bazan will be touring extensively, with over 50 dates planned in the U.S. between June and August

OVERVIEW Nobody but Mark Pritchard could have made an album like Under the Sun - because nobody has had the musical life that he has. This is an album forged from almost a quarter century of immersion and exploration in the most vital underground scenes the world has to offer, friendship and musical alliance with generations of the most important musicians alive. Drawing elements from his past work - Harmonic 313 beats, Link acid, Global Communications ambience and Africa HiTech rhythms - Pritchard creates his most crucial recording yet. It's the sound of an artist confident of his ability to work in any genre or none, who is abreast of the most cutting edge sounds that culture and technology have to offer, but is deep rooted in the history of modern music and production. It ties together emotional memories of the countryside of the south west of England, felt strongly on the other side of the world, echoes of mythical and real pasts reverberating through the chord patterns of jazz, folk and electronic music, sensory deprivation and deep emotional introspection, all in a single ebbing and flowing musical stream. Joining Pritchard for this release are a carefully chosen group of guest artists who's vocals create touchstones throughout the cinematic movements of Under the Sun. Thom Yorke, Linda Perhacs, Bibio and Beans are all on hand to lend their unique voices the record which both stand out and help weave together the tapestry of this record.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

AFRICANS WITH MAINFRAMES Hieroglyphic Being / Noleian Reusse

K. M. T. Street Date: 13 th May 2016 No shipments outside of North America

Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns for a new second album on Soul Jazz Records, after last year’s debut ‘The Acid Documents’, this time under the name Africans with Mainframes.

Tracklist

Hieroglyphic Being and fellow Chicago producer Noleian Reusse have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now, ever since their debut on Hieroglyphic Being’s own Mathematics Recordings label in 2005. ‘K.M.T.’ is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental black music today. You can't stop the prophet!

Born and based in Chicago, Moss’s music embodies two of the cultural foundation blocks of the city’s musical lineage; that of Chicago’s original Acid House sound (c. 1986), that of Frankie Knuckles, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson et al, alongside a rigorous experimental sound searching that taps into the cosmic musical lineage of pioneering artist Sun Ra whose Arkestra landed and was based in the city from 1946-61.

COUNT OSSIE & THE RASTA FAMILY

Man From Higher Heights

Street Date: 13th

2016

No shipments outside of North America

Soul Jazz Records are releasing Count Ossie & The Rasta Family’s long lost reggae album ‘Man From Higher Heights’ (originally released in 1983), digitally remastered and with full original artwork.

Tracklist

This release follows on from the earlier release of Count Ossie and The Mystic Revelation of Rastafari ‘Tales of Mozambique’ (1975), also by Soul Jazz Records.

Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, somewhere between the last Mystic Revelation album and the 1983 official release of ‘Man From Higher Heights’, it remains unclear whether this album is a mixture of original recordings overlayed with additional players, or Ossie’s post-‐Mystic Revelation players remaining true to the spirit of Count Ossie (who had died in a car crash in 1976). Either way, it is a fascinating and successful blend of heavyweight Rastafarian roots rhythms and drumming alongside deep jazz improvisation and tripped out psychedelic fuzz guitar. Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley’s promotion of the faith internationally in the 1970s. Count Ossie’s drummers made the first ever song to integrate Rastafarian traditional music into popular music -‐ The Folkes Brothers’ song ‘Oh Carolina’, recorded for producer Prince Buster in 1959. In 1966 his drummers greeted the arrival of Haile Selassie at Kingston airport. His Rastafarian compound in the hills of Wareika, Kingston, hosted jam sessions between his drummers and Jamaica’s finest musicians, Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Johnny Moore and others.

PRESENTS

Awakened Spirit About Deeply spiritual musician, producer and founding father of 'Ancestral Soul', African powerhouse Boddhi Satva returns with a very special 4 track EP. Having previously released on Louie Vega's 'Vega' label and Osunlade's Yoruba Records as well as running his own 'Offering Recordings', we are delighted to welcome him back to BBE. Full of African and Latin influenced rhythms and powerful vocal performances, 'Awakened Spirit' perfectly reflects Satva's idiosyncratic, mystical approach to music. Translating as 'The White Bird', opening track 'Ngnari Konon' is "an ode to peace in Africa and the rest of the world" says Satva. It features Grammy Award winner & UN ambassador Oumou Sangare, one of Africa’s greatest female voices. Featuring the late vocalist Mangala Camara, hypnotic second track 'Nankoumandjan' is named after an ancient warrior from the Mandingue Empire. Potent third track 'Benefit' features legendary UK soul vocalist Omar, who simply soars over Satva's blend of African and Caribbean musical flavours. Final track 'Fighting Spirit' closes out the EP with Brazilian percussion backing up a dense and potent House groove, dedicated to Boddhi's father who sadly lost his battle with cancer in early 2014.

JAMESZOO “FOOL”

Street Date: CD 5/13/2016 BFCD059 Brainfeeder will release the debut album - Fool - from Dutchman Jameszoo on 13th May 2016 on CD and Digital formats. The LP format will follow. Described by the producer as "naive computer jazz", despite features from two bona fide legends - namely legendary jazz pianist and bandleader Steve Kuhn and Brazilian composer and arranger Arthur Verocai it's a record that fits perfectly into the label’s expanding take on the modern evolution of jazz music, following outings by Kneebody & Daedelus, Thundercat and Kamasi Washington.

TRACKLISTING

Across its 11 tracks, Fool plays out Van Dinther’s journey to find a musical voice he can be proud of and which can also inspire others. Alongside Verocai, Dafé, and Kuhn, the album features a stellar cast of classical and jazz musicians including pianist Niels Broos, drummers Julian Sartorius and Richard Spaven, bass guitarists Raphael Vanoli and Stephen Bruner (aka Thundercat), and saxophonist John Dikeman. All of these different contributions and approaches are weaved together into a whole by Van Dinther, armed with electronics and naivety. At times coherent, at times seemingly haphazard, the album is always joyful. “I tried to create something that is both tradition and me fooling around,” he explains. “There is something to be said for both sides of the spectrum. If we always remain in tradition there will be no evolution.”

THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF 1970S FUNKY LAGOS Strut repress one of the all-time classic compilations of Afro-funk and Afrobeat for 2016, the first volume of the mighty Nigeria 70 series. Originally released in 2001, the album followed the death of Fela Kuti and a renewed interest in original Afrobeat among younger club-goers. Put together over a three-week trip to Lagos, it documented for the first time the explosive era when domestic bands fused traditional highlife and juju with funk, soul, rock and disco. Alongside two cuts by Fela Kuti, Nigeria 70 shone the spotlight on the incredible musicianship of artists like Segun Bucknor, Joni Haastrup and his Monomono band, Orlando Julius, saxophonist Peter King, “Guitar Boy” Victor Uwaifo, Lijadu Sisters and quirky keyboard wizard William Onyeabor among many others. Spread over 3LPs, the original edition also included a one-hour audio documentary featuring exclusive interviews with many original musicians and industry figures from the ‘70s scene, narrated by Wunmi. As well as being a valuable document of an under-rated era, Nigeria 70 was one of the first crossover albums to dig deep into the African music archives and effectively market the music to a new online audience hungry for rare grooves and unique dancefloor sounds. Since Nigeria 70, this market has widened hugely with labels like Soundway, Analog Africa and Hot Casa all working tirelessly to document rare African beats. This new pressing of the Nigeria 70 3LP set is limited to 500 copies and features the full CD version and CD audio documentary as a bonus within the package. Full artwork is also featured including John Armstrong’s extensive sleeve note history alongside rare photos.

INFORMATION:

Silk Road Assassins are Tom E. Vercetti, Lovedr0id and Chemist, who met while studying music technology and composition and discovered they had similar tastes and ideals. The project was formed after they began experimenting with combining the academic study of sound design with their personal musical interests. The original aim of the project was to combine their shared interests in grime, drill and club music with film and game soundtrack composition. A: Citadel VI
Shaded Defect B: Cryo Enemy Vectors Akwraith Hollow-Point

The EP follows a loose narrative set in a retrofuturistic/dystopian city, with development into game music in mind; it’s dance music that has been crafted with an ear for widescreen enveloping sonics. It opens with the scene setting ‘Citadel VI’ dropping into the atmospheric glide of ‘Shaded’ with its camera sounds and energetic bass, kicks and claps. The mood darkens with the punchy ‘Defect’ as the track uncurls through a vortex of gated chords. ‘Cryo Enemy’ returns to a mournful trap with Gamelan and gongs splashing gently across rolling kicks and snares. ‘Vectors’ luxuriates in deep bass and trap snares as clouds of chords and arpeggios rise and fall. ’Akwraith’ rolls out with a nervous mood followed by the ambience of ‘Hollow-Point’ which finishes the EP where it started, warm and glowing.

JAMES HUNTER SIX (BABY) HOLD ON b/w CARINA DAP - 1 0 9 6 A/B Behold! The dishy new platter from England's finest expor t since its eponymous Muffin, James Hunter and his cheeky band-o-blokes, the James Hunter Six, is here. Side A features the title track of his brand new SMASH long player, Hold On - a classic shuffler that delivers an honest blast of raw R&B the way it's meant to be done. Flip the little bugger over and rejoice to a classic Hunter cut that, much to the chagrin of low-rider and rocksteady DJs alike, has eluded the 45 format. TILL NOW! Rerecorded during the sessions for 'Hold On', Carina now possesses a more relaxed, classic rocksteady feel. Coupled with gorgeously simple background vocals, and James' pleading lead - this tune now boasts a truly dizzying level of emotional intelligence. If you don't like this song, you're an emotionally bankrupt soul, deaf to beautiful things.

Drag City presents a newly-unearthed artifact from the long history of The Red Krayola: 1984’s previously-unheard Baby and Child Care. Every year, we discover in our society the injustices of history in many and myriad forms. Surely among the most profound realizations of 2016 will be that the heads of (record) industry circa 1984 did not hear a fantastic new release when the tapes for Baby and Child Care were played to them! Grooving sinuously in prime mid-80s form in a production redolent with funk, dub and new-wave inflections, Baby and Child Care is of a musical vintage whose dry complexity is even more appreciable today. The revolutionary advice found within The

Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care opened doors in the mid-40s that are widening still; at the time of this album project, it had influenced a generation or two of generally young parents. At that time, The Red Krayola were a band on a musical roll, having just recorded and released Black Snakes on the Swiss Rec Rec label. When presented with the lyric qualities of Dr. Spock’s psychoanalytic texts, passages of which had been transposed by Art & Language’s Michael Baldwin and Mel Ramsden, Mayo Thompson immediately set them to music. The Red Krayola “Black Snakes” band — Ben Annesley on bass, Chris White on drums and Allen Ravenstine on synthesizer and soprano sax — provided musical

accompaniment in performances recorded by Eric Radcliffe at Blackwing Studios in London. Thirty-two years later, the conversant playing and production approach of Baby and Child Care comes across with an enduring completeness that belies its position on the shelf for the past several decades. Despite the initial lack of release, its pride of place can now be appreciated, an example of the Red Krayola’s particular brand of collaboration. Standing tall next to the already-known classics of early-80s Red Krayola, from Kangaroo? through Three Songs on a Trip to the United States, Baby and Child Care is essential listening for parents and progeny alike.

TRACK LISTING: HOW TO HEAR WHAT’S LESS THAN MEETS THE EAR CHEERY EH LEARNED ASTRONOMER MANIFESTO IN CLEAR LANGUAGE NIGHTFALL IN THE COVERED CAGE THE BONSAI WATERFALL

SELLING POINTS: Continues Grubbs’s recent turn toward expansive, real-time electric guitar music. Features manic contributions from drummer Eli Keszler. These are the first recordings of Grubbs and Keszler in a duo setting. Beautiful, eminently ponderable cover artwork by Kai Althoff (of the bands Workshop and Fanal).

CD

Roll, tape, roll . . . the genie gambols, but viewed from a different angle angel is indistinguishable from crocodile, from shadow shaped and thrown. Prismrose is a nearly wordless collection of six pieces for electric guitar, all given real time to breathe, grow unpredictably, mutate. It’s an album—an of-a-piece, start-to-finish listen—that documents what an electric guitar sounds like in David Grubbs’s hands now that we’ve stumbled into the year 2016. Prismrose comes to us—comes at us—from a stellar run of expansive, hands-thinking hands-puzzling guitar music that began with the stylistic pivot of Grubbs’s solo records An Optimist Notes the Dusk and The Plain Where the Palace Stood (do we have a trilogy brewing?) and the two recent albums from the trio Belfi / Grubbs / Pilia. Prismrose begins with “How to Hear What’s Less than Meets the Ear,” an eleven-minute duo written for Tony Conrad’s 75th birthday bash with Grubbs on chiming, tolling Telecaster and wunderkind percussionist and composer Eli Keszler on backwards-somersaulting drums. Keszler makes his presence known on three of the album’s tracks. The years reel with an errand into the 14th century for “Cheery Eh,” an arrangement of Guillaume de Machaut, and a brief stop in the 19th century with a setting of Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”—there are your words, unimpeachable ones—by Rick Moody, originally recorded by the Wingdale Community Singers. Side two is unambiguously set in the present moment, and this suite of three instrumentals sails off the edge of the world with the breezy, eminently whistleable anthem “The Bonsai Waterfall.” And dig that instantly iconic cover courtesy of artist Kai Althoff (Workshop, Fanal). It gets it. Roll on, wordless, nearly so.

Too good to be reduced to the cliche of a solitary, bearded lo-fi-folk singer' Nothing but Hope and Passion ‘Slow burning and minimal, gently plucked guitar and drums frame his elegantly wounded tenor croon.’ The Line of Best Fit A.DYJECINSKI (EH-DEE-YEAH-CHIN-SKI) is originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia and lived for many years in Ontario but currently resides in London, U.K. where he works out of a home studio. His debut self-recorded album is as gritty and raw as it is minimal and vulnerable. The album as well as a 24 page photographic accompaniment will be released by Sideways Saloon Recording Company May 13th 2016. A.DYJECINSKI is an enigma wrapped up in a ball of gently mysterious wool. He is originally from Canada; 'The Valley of Yessiree' is his first album as a solo artist: A self-recorded autobiographical concept record on failure in the pursuit of loneliness and the ghosts that occupy his mind. "I went on a journey to see how remote I could live, how much solitude I could find, but seeking to be physically alone does not free one from the company of self; memories become actualized by their existence. I soon began to realize that I am failing at my journey and the point of the journey was changing; that even when physically alone, my thoughts were always in company. The observation itself was the point. The illusion of our constructed world is made true by the belief that it is. The album is about failure of solitude and loneliness. The songs are the autobiographical stories. If the concept behind the album was to find solitude, so the methodology should follow suit. I overdubbed each track on reel to reel tape recorder, the centerpiece of my home studio; drums, trumpet, bass, keys, viola, guitars playing every instrument myself. Despite physical solitude, the weight of everyone I have ever known still stands with me; the backing vocals a symbol of their ghost.” OTHER ACTIVITY: http://www.adyjecinski.com/

»I don‘t want to go near that song... it‘s totally haunted and cursed. I want to live.« Thomas Lauderdale - Pink Martini

1 Song : 12 artists It is the world’s deadliest song, a musical composition so lethal that merely to hear it hummed may induce suicidal tendencies. It is “Gloomy Sunday”, public menace of such potentially epidemic proportions the BBC was compelled to ban it for decades. Indeed, if contemporary news reports and eyewitness accounts are to be believed, no other song comes close to it for sheer morbidity. “Helter Skelter”? The Manson murders were horrific, to be sure, but the role of the Beatles’ song in those tragic deaths was incidental at best, and in the end, seven lives were claimed; the number of fragile souls, meanwhile, to have succumbed to the unrelenting lugubriousness of “Gloomy Sunday” may number in the hundreds if not the thousands. “Better By You, Better Than Me”? When played backwards, a US lawsuit alleged, this 1990 Judas Priest song prompts listeners to “do it” and commit suicide. But how deadly can a song be which must be listened to backwards? “Gloomy Sunday’s” impact is direct and instantaneous. One need only recall the story of the Roman shop boy who, hearing a beggar hum it, handed the man his money and jumped from the nearest bridge. Hungarian pianist and composer Reszo Seress wrote the original music and lyrics for Szomorú Vasárnap – Gloomy Sunday – in 1933, while heartbroken over the break-up of a romance. Though local publishers initially rejected the song as too despairing, a new version with less forlorn lyrics by poet Laszlo Javor became an instant hit – and began claiming innocent lives almost immediately. The song’s first victim, it is said, was the woman for whom it was penned. In the wake of its initial success, Seress’ ex-lover poisoned herself, leaving a suicide note of just two words: “Gloomy Sunday.” Hers was but the beginning of a wave of “Gloomy Sunday” suicides that ravaged Budapest in the 1930s. According to a US newspaper report from the time, “Budapest police have branded the song ‘Gloomy Sunday’ public menace No. 1 and have asked all musicians and orchestras to cooperate in suppressing it, dispatches said Today.” No one was immune, the article claimed. “Men, women and children are among the victims. Two people shot themselves while gypsies played the melancholy notes on violins. Some killed themselves while listening to it on gramophone records in their homes. Two housemaids cut their employers’ linens and

paintings and then killed themselves after hearing the song drifting up into the servant‘s hall from dinner parties.” Seress was never prosecuted for the havoc his song unleashed (though fate may have caught up with him in 1968, when he leapt to his own death), but he and Javor alone can hardly be held responsible for “Gloomy Sunday’s” death toll. Like a plague, the song has spread, passed along by some of the most reckless and reprobate “artists” of our times. Paul Robeson introduced the English version in 1935. Billie Holiday immortalised it in 1941. Björk, Ray Charles, Marianne Faithfull, Serge Gainsbourg, Diamanda Galas, Pyotr Leshchenko, Kronos Quartett – this list of infamy goes on and on. And now we can add to it the ultimate act of music industry callousness and irresponsibility – the release by Piranha Records of a collection of 10 new versions of “Gloomy Sunday” from around the world, plus the Billie Holiday masterpiece and the very Hungarian original for your digitally remastered listening pleasure. Go ahead, listen to it if you must. But don’t say you weren’t warned. And should you be one of the fortunate ones to survive this ordeal, have the decency and good sense not to recommend it to others. Piranha Records must not be rewarded for their cynicism and betrayal of the public trust. Above all else, they must be discouraged from releasing “Gloomy Sunday vol. II”, which our sources say is already in the works. Alex Marashian

“It belongs in another world; all psychedelic, hazy, dreamy melodies and mutated instruments" Noisey Manchester’s Whyte Horses have announced they will release their exceptional debut album Pop or Not via CRC Music on May 6, 2016. To mark the announcement, the band are streaming album track ‘Feels Like Somethings Changing’ – listen HERE. Pop or Not is the result of a music chronologist’s three-month sojourn in the heart of the Italian countryside with only battered analogue recording gear, some cheap guitars and a female vocalist and friend for company. Inspired by the nomadic travels of cult folk artist Mark Fry and outsider Krautrock groups, Pop or Not was created deep within a dilapidated cottage, deep in the Frosinone mountains range with no access to the outside world. Whyte Horses are a perfect psychedelic pop group. The ensemble make guitars chime like lysergic bells and sing songs so full of wonder that they make your heart ache. They shape-shift from Turkish psyche to Brazilian trip music, from acid house to electronica to punk rock to guitar classic in a heartbeat. It really shouldn't work, but it is synthesised with such love and perfection that there is a hypnotic beauty to their music and a poetic perfection to their muse. All the best music is made by fanatics. The kind of people who are immersed in its wonder and dream in technicolour and see sound and are obsessed by the never ending panoply of electric noise. The band is the brainchild of Dom Thomas, a music fanatic and chronologist who scours the planet for obscure and rare vinyl genius. This obsession is their musical DNA and Whyte Horses are the sound of people who are on the quest for the perfect record and have decided to make one themselves. whytehorses.tumblr.com/ https://www.facebook.com/WhyteHorsesOfficial/

BART HOLOMEW It was in a recent issue of Toronto’s NOW magazine, music editor Carla Gillis proclaimed that Bart just may be her favourite new Toronto band. This is not an isolated opinion. Over the course of the past year the band has played to a consistently growing group of converts. Last year when Jim O’Rourke declared prog rock as vital and contemporary as it’s ever been we could only nod in approval and it seems others are in the mood for a maximal, musical experience. Bart’s use of dynamics and harmonics take them places where few contemporaries dare to tread. Triple saxophone breaks, piano ballads and synthetic fades into the centre of a new age all make up the band’s debut full length Holomew. Filled with hooks, melodies and meditations on the bigger picture, Bart’s Holomew is ambitious in scope and unapologetically progressive. Notes on the packaging

“Their harmony-laden, rhythmically-dense progressive psych-pop sounds like it arose from an acid-soaked psychic abyss.” -Richard Trapunski, Chart Attack

“Do you love songs stuffed full of great ideas, sonic tangents, saxophone bleating, dynamics a plenty, gorgeously stacked falsetto vocals, a triple-axe attack of chatty clean guitar lines? In a nutshell: DO YOU LOVE PROG ROCK? Yes? Then Bart’s your band.” -Carla Gillis, Now Magazine

Rob Mazurek & Emmett Kelly Alien Flower Sutra Composed and arranged by Rob Mazurek, Alien Flower Sutra is the apogee of a collaborative conceptual process that bloomed over multiple years, voices and instrumentations. After planting seeds at home with pen, piano and cornet in hand, Mazurek took to various performance spaces in Chicago and São Paulo across 2013 and 2014 to open his compositions to interpretation by a potent pool of creative musicians. Among them was guitarist Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang, Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society), whose interchanges with Mazurek led the two to conversations about an accompanying storyline for the music. Responding to post-apocalyptic and science-fictional imageries long central to Mazurek’s aesthetic (as themed by his Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, and Black Cube SP), Kelly took to writing lyrics within the framework of the existing melodies. The consummate story colors a vivid first-person narrative through the perception of a cybernetic organism struggling to reconcile the human buried inside their computer-regulated psyche. In the exposition, on “Blackout,” the protagonist finds enlightenment and pleasure in a power outage that temporarily suspends their vision. And by the culmination, on “We Are One,” they find equal expression through both sides of their organic-electronic persona: “a good companion in the steel / understands me like no other / and feels nothing I cannot feel / in the bolt of lightning, we are one.” Meditating on not-too-futuristic concepts common to the collective conscience of our time, the final script finds optimism over paranoia in the advancing state of human evolution. Though part of Mazurek’s early vision was to develop this work into a full-scale opera, he found inspiration in the intimate voice/guitar recordings Kelly made remotely, and chose instead to experiment with those minimal tracks alongside recordings from Sâo Paulo’s El Rocha Studios he’d been maturating in his modular synthesizers. Alien Flower Sutra as finalized for this release is an animate palette of poetry and electronic treatments conducted by Mazurek and articulated by the candor of Kelly’s aching narratives. The newest project from Ultra88 &Nacho Picasso on pink colored vinyl for vocals and B&W vinyl for the instrumentals both LPs with DL of full album.

Over the last few years, the Seattle rapper has teamed up with the production duo Blue Sky Black Death for a few albums’ worth of hazy, gothic, sinister rap music. My favorite of their team-ups is probably still 2011’s For The Glory, but they always sound good together; their styles just mesh beautifully. 88 Ultra is one half of Blue Sky Black Death, and now he and Nacho have teamed up for a new EP called The Witchtape...instrumental versions of all five [songs], which gives a better opportunity to hear the dark beauty at work. I’m pretty sure “City Streets” samples the Twin Peaks theme music, so if you ever wanted to hear what a great rap producer could do with that, there you go.

Karl Blau Introducing Karl Blau ALBUM DESCRIPTION A new country: Northwest indie hero Karl Blau channels darkness and hope in this cinematic collection of Nashville country hits from the 1960’s and 70’s, produced by Tucker Martine with performances by Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Laura Veirs, Jon Hyde, Eli Moore (Lake), Steve Moore (Earth, SunnO)))), among others. Blau is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and DIY icon who helped turn his hometown of Anacortes, Washington, into an indie-music mecca. He has released more than 40 records in 20-odd years, many self-released in handmade packaging and mailed to subscribers, and others on iconic indie Northwest labels K and knw-yr-own. Blau has also toured and recorded for years with Laura Veirs, The Microphones, Little Wings, D+, and Earth. Martine, known for his distinctive production work on music by My Morning Jacket, The Decemberists, and Laura Veirs, recalled first being introduced by Veirs to Blau’s early music. “I was transfixed by Karl’s voice and completely absorbed by the world of sound he had created. I felt like I had been shown one of the great hidden treasures of music.” A few years later, Martine recorded an instrumental version of “That’s How I Got to Memphis,” the 1969 Tom T. Hall hit. Blau, whom Tucker had come to know in sessions with Laura Veirs among others, asked if he could try singing it. The collaboration, pairing Karl’s deeply sonorous voice with Martine’s warm, modern arrangements, recast the Nashville hit in a new light. The result was the single and, now, Introducing Karl Blau.

CHARALAMBIDES Glowing Raw LP-DR-00011 Street Date: May 13, 2016 Format: LP (with download) List Price: $19.99

GLOWING RAW – Vanity, Look In Passing | Do You Believe | Give Me Jesus | Beneath The Fractured Trees | The Soldier Glowing Raw

Formed in 1991, Charalambides has always and will forever be the constant core duo of Tom and Christina Carter. Though music scenes and genre classifications ceaselessly change, this duo has stayed “wholly-other” dedicated to a “vision of spiritual music (in all its forms) as transformative force.” The sound of Charalambides is beyond unique. Personal and consistent, it moves forward and outwardly in radical shifts and strategies. Glowing Raw… Charalambides... “Illusory, dreadful magic lies within their music. Terror is present but fleeting. Relief exists with all its attendant pleasure; yet, relief can only emerge in the wake of tension. Glowing Raw is a record full of such intricacies. Charalambides’ music carries the curious quality of being tethered only by itself. Tom and Christina Carter don’t pull music(s) in as much as they reach out to touch them, and in so doing, they summon a place that exists only when they play. The music shies neither from traditionalism nor formlessness. It’s easy to ascribe a landscape-like quality to this music, and easier still to presume that the landscape of the music is the scene of their surroundings. Yet, what emerges is a place existing only in the hearts of those conjuring it. Glowing Raw… Any glow worthy of the name is, if you think about it, always raw. No one glows on command…” – Matt Krefting Recorded in the late-90s, with a very limited CDR release a decade later, Glowing Raw represents an important but often-unheard artwork in the all-amazing recording history of Charalambides. Created around the same time as the crucial Houston album, Glowing Raw is Charalambides in essential and pure form. It’s powerful and potent. Drawing Room is proud to present the first time vinyl release of Glowing Raw. Each LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full color matte jacket (with download) and includes a foldout poster.

SALES POINTS -First time vinyl release of album recorded in 1998 and originally issued as a highly limited CDR in 2006. -A critical piece of the Charlambides discography that is a vinyl must have for anyone and everyone interested in their work.

-Each LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full-color matte jacket (with download) and includes a foldout poster insert. Musically, “They've created a world apart... Their work feels wholly self-contained, never seeming to refer to anything but itself." - Marc Masters, Pitchfork "Christina has a beautiful voice, clear and bell-like. I've heard her influence on lots of women in the experimental underground music scene. I never heard anyone quite as vulnerable and as strong. It's kind of magical. I never get tired of listening to it. It's fresh every time I put it on." - Kim Gordon, New York

Times "Charalambides are among the most beautiful and mysterious groups to have emerged from the American desert. ...They have created a glowing template of humanist/mystical improvisation that has kneaded brain muscles from here to Kokomo." - Byron Coley, The Wire

CHARALAMBIDES Strangle the Wretched Heavens LP-DR-00012 Street Date: May 13, 2016 Format: LP (with download) List Price: $19.99

STRANGLE THE WRETCHED HEAVENS – Strangle The Wretched Heavens| A Mile Is Only 5,000 Miles | Lay Open | Turning Point | Strangle the Wretched Heavens

Strangle The Wretched Heavens…”We could get lazy and use words like ‘spectral’ or ‘haunting,’ but those words open neither ears nor hearts. This music is every bit as supernatural as it is grounded, and what it does, ultimately, is move according to its own internal logic, as our feelings move according to their own internal logic. That is what keeps Charalambides’ music relevant, what makes it timeless. It doesn’t prey on simple nostalgia or easily defined categories of manufactured emotion. It’s proven time and time again that it’s neither overly tethered to, nor an escape from, reality. These songs map a private language, a place of their own making, mysterious and alluring to anyone who hears them. They turn any number of worlds, with all attendant expectations, on their heads, acting as a platform for mobile, twirling, ineffable feeling.” – Matt Krefting Initially recorded in the mid-90s, with a very limited CDR release in the mid-00s, Strangle the Wretched Heavens represents a missing and essential puzzle piece in the allamazing recording history of Charalambides. Following one of their earliest seminal releases, the almighty Market Square, Strangle… is the next chapter. Dark and intense, the album is pure beauty inside and out. Its magic is almost indescribable, but its power can be physically felt completely. Drawing Room is proud to present the first time vinyl release of Strangle… Each LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl housed in a full color matte jacket (with download) and includes a foldout poster.

I’m Giving Up On Rock & Roll Mystery On My Final Day I Lose It Everybody Rains Be A Good Person I Guess My Heart’s Out of Tune Again What’s the Name of the Town? I’m Not That Famous Yet

Christopher the Conquered wants you to read between the lines. That said, he’s got a damn good reason for naming his full-length debut album, I’m Giving Up On Rock & Roll [Maximum Ames Records]. “I’m not referring to music,” he explains. “It’s the idea of Rock & Roll as a metaphor for misrepresenting yourself. Living behind a mask or a façade is not a healthy way to live. That’s what I’m giving up on. People love Rock & Roll, and I love Rock & Roll. However, the person I am onstage is also the person I am offstage.” It’s this sort of pure honesty that defines the album’s nine tracks, and it’s also why Christopher made some serious waves in 2015. The Iowa singer, songwriter, and performer has crafted a declaratory musical statement that’s impossible to ignore. In the summer of 2015, he shared the stage with Natalie Prass and handed her an early copy of I’m Giving Up On Rock & Roll. She in turn passed it on to Ryan Adams who took to Twitter and Instagram calling the album, “Crazy and incredible.” Soon after, Christopher landed on the front page of Reddit and in Billboard as the title track and single “I’m Giving Up On Rock & Roll” quickly passed 60,000 plays on Soundcloud. This properly set the stage for the album’s 2016 release. “I wanted this to be a cohesive experience that takes listeners on a journey,” he goes on. “This album strips everything back; this is me.” Throughout the record, Christopher has architected a sound that’s both poetically ponderous and theatrically bombastic. Now, he’s officially sharing it. “It isn’t for me,” he leaves off. “The art happens when you’re alone at the piano. I got my satisfaction from that part of the process. Now, I’ve created something for others. I want people to reflect on their lives and what they’re doing when they listen to this and feel happy. There’s no reason to live under any pretense or obligations other than your own passion and love. The album is about that.”

INNER LIGHT Pastoral Homage Vol. I th May 13 , 2016 Arrhythmic tape loops, extended improvisation on guitar and modular synthesizer as well as minimal two part vocals are arranged sparsely on the debut release by Inner Light, the Australian via Baltimore duo comprised of Meredith McHugh and Christian J. Best. Out on Ehse records, Pastoral Homage Vol. 1 is the first in a series of releases paying compliment to 1970s provincial German electronica. As both Christian and Meredith are shared as core members of the krauty/drone outfit Smoke Bellow, it follows that a similar DNA can be detected. However, Pastoral Homage serves as a counterpoint to Smoke Bellow's calculated approach. Tracks were impulsively recorded to tape, predominantly live and with minimal overdubs. The results are extended meditations that explore texture, interplay, form and repetition. Track Listing Side A: Cactus Eucalypt

Lost Track #9 11. From the Ground Up About: Since the band’s inception in 2012, Daily Grind has been about just that: the day-in-day-out dedication to their craft. From humble Pittsburgh roots, handing out demos to friends at house shows, and through relentless nationwide touring, Daily Grind has grown from just a group of college kids known for packing parties into a true grassroots phenomenon. The band has adopted a collective mentality of constant work, using the rallying cry “Stay grinding!” Their debut album, I Did Those Things, was recorded in a two month span at The Wilderness Recording Studio by producer/engineer J. Vega (White Wives, Roger Harvey) and mastered by Grammy winner Kramer (Galaxie 500, Low). The record is a culmination of the time and effort the band has spent establishing their sound: the magnitude of the drums and the crunch of the guitars are tailored for fans of Incubus and The Black Keys, but the electricity and intensity that come through are something all their own. Lovers of 90's and 00's rock will have a new favorite album in the form of Daily Grind's I Did Those Things.
