The record is RUFF - simultaneously a return to form and a departure from expectations. Songs of refutation, lamentations of forgotten past lives and ecstatic self-erasures that say “eat shit, we did it!”.

RUFF, as an idea, is everything - sound, message, band. If Birthmarks was polished and presentable, RUFF is the ugly innards that hide beneath.

Over four albums, the Ontario, Canada-based quartet has developed a signature aesthetic that encompasses tightly wound, trapezoidal indie-pop frothing over with hooks and wryly cathartic lyrics. The group has garnered favorable comparisons to such quirky pop infiltrators as the Talking Heads, The Pixies, and The Strokes. Onstage, the band is arousing and assaulting, coming off somewhere between a riot and a soul revue. Born Ruffians are Luke Lalonde (guitar/vocals), Mitch Derosier (bass), Andy Lloyd (guitar/keyboard) and Adam Hindle (drums).

RUFF was written in a fevered period of inspiration, and recorded in just three weeks in Toronto by Jeff McMurrich (Fucked Up, Alvvays). The band’s trusted friend Rusty Santos (Animal Collective), who produced their acclaimed album, Red, Yellow & Blue, mixed RUFF in New York. During the album’s conceptualizing stages, the group’s creative nucleus of Luke and Mitch were artistically fueled by the self-possessed individualism of such bands as The Clash, Fugazi, Ought, Twin peaks, and the Beastie Boys. Often, the songs for RUFF were half written right before band practice and finished the same day as a collective creative effort.

Paranoia leads to defensiveness, and we all end up in the trenches facing each other across the mud.” - Brian Eno The Ship, a new album by Brian Eno, will be released on March 4th, 2016

by Warp Records. The Ship is Eno’s first solo record since 2012’s Grammy-nominated LUX. Originally conceived from experiments with three dimensional recording techniques and formed in two, interconnected parts, The Ship is almost as much musical novel as traditional album. Eno brings together beautiful songs, minimalist ambience, physical electronics, omniscient narratives and technical innovation into a single, cinematic suite. The result is the very best of Eno, a record without parallel in his catalogue.

The album opens with the 21-minute eponymously titled “The Ship” on which Eno’s cyclically sung sea-chant builds in ominous drama, followed by “Fickle Sun”, a song in three movements. The first continues where “The Ship” left but with Eno’s voice sounding more upfront, determined, even despairing. The album’s finale is a Lou Reed penned cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free”, a band who were famously credited by Eno as the inspiration behind his early music explorations as an art student.

HORSE LORDS

INTERVENTIONS West African rhythms collide with just intonation guitars, art-fire saxophone, minimalist grooves, and collaged zapdowns on Interventions, the powerful third full-length from Baltimore’s Horse Lords. The band’s Northern Spy debut is also the first Horse Lords album to explore the classic studio-as-weaponry strategies of yore, mapping the quartet’s raw Baltimore lightning onto the experimental musique concrète territory surveyed by elder heads like Faust and This Heat.

Founded at the turn o’ the ‘teens by Andrew Bernstein (saxophone/percussion), Max Eilbacher (bass/electronics), Owen Gardner (guitar), and Sam Haberman (drums), Horse Lords quickly established themselves as avant-heavies with the two extended tracks of their powerful self-titled debut (Ehse Records, 2012). Playing custom electric guitars and basses refretted by Gardner, the band’s rolling polyrhythms chime with the strange and distinct harmonies of just intonation inspired by the master La Monte Young and other heroes. Where the earliest Horse Lords releases, also including Hidden Cities (NNA Tapes, 2014) concentrated on linear performance, a trio of Mixtape cassettes (self-released, 2012-2014) pointed the way towards the newest turn in the Horse Lords saga.

Having completed a preliminary round of work on their eponymous 2015 album at Rockfield Studios,Wire found themselves with 19 tracks. Among them, there was a critical mass of 11 aesthetically unified songs. In typical Wire fashion, however, the remaining material was something other: it had the sound of a band already moving in a different direction, beyond the album project in which they were engaged at that time. These tracks were the basis for Nocturnal Koreans. The difference between the two clusters of work birthed at Rockfield has its roots in discrete approaches to the studio process itself. Nocturnal Koreans emphasises studio construction over authentic performance, using the recording environment as an instrument, not just as a simple means of capturing Wire playing.

Although it’s become de rigueur to talk about Wire’s capacity for self-reinvention, that’s never the whole story. Certainly, the impulse to pursue fresh ideas with each phase of work is buried deep in their artistic DNA, but they’ve balanced that commitment to the new with a core character and attitude that’s always at some level recognisable as Wire—without being reducible to a formulaic sound. It’s this enduring dialectic that gives Wire their unique status as a long-established band that continues to forge ahead with original music: always unmistakably Wire but always reimagined and reframed with each successive project.

Antwood is the alias of Tristan Douglas - a Canadian whose releases so far have been on netlabels such as Cocobass and B.YRSLF Division, initially under the name ‘Margaret Antwood’. He's now dropped the punning female first name and been picked up by Planet Mu for his first proper full-length, Virtuous.scr. The music on this album feels very modern, but doesn't feel genre specific or even created by a human at times. It has an obvious dark cartoonish cinematic feel to it that hints at computer game music and anime soundtracks, but it’s as if the tracks are semi-autonomous beings evolving as part of a larger eco-system: the sounds are mechanical, things uncoil, whirr and stretch, strafe and crack around melodic segments, synthesised forms bouncing around the speakers, falling into melody and then out again, full of colour and drama.

Perhaps in this context It makes sense that Tristan is a microbiologist too - but also that the theme he was inspired by when creating the album was centred around the development of an AI. A little later in the process it started to crystalize into the idea of whether or not an AI can have a set of ethics, and if not, how close can it get to being like human intelligence? It comes through in the music as the album becomes more melodic, almost sentimental at the end.

Virtuous.scr also references the darker corners of the Internet, as reflected in its track titles.

Like all the best electronic music which isn’t entirely melodic, the listener is able to put their imagination right at the centre of the work and can rest assured that the album will reward their attention. Virtuous.scr is full of rhythmic ideas, evocative, textural sound design and also has an intriguing musical narrative - we're sure that willing listeners will enjoy the ride!

Like many before him, Warp record artist Clark has been tapped by the world of film and television to bring his sound to the series The Last Panthers. The French and English language series stars Samantha Morton and will be premiering in the U.S on the Sundance channel in spring of this year.

What listeners will experience on this score is a more fully fleshed out composition of the music in the series. After hearing the final cuts from the series, Clark proceeded to edit and chisel his work, adding in new material as well to create something beyond a conventional score. What we end up with is a cohesive piece that flows between a mixture of seductive, caustic, sombre, euphoric...a mix of emotions to sonically capture the depth and nuance of the series, while also functioning as a beautiful stand alone piece of music.

BOOTSTRAPSHOMAGE Bootstraps is a testament to the idea that good songs always find their audience. The Los Angeles-based band, specializes in what Rolling Stone called “compelling, emotionally gripping material” while naming them “a band worth watching closely.”

Even before the release of the band’s 2014 self-titled debut, Bootstraps’ music had been featured prominently in TV and film as their breakout record won over the industry’s most selective audience.

Last year, after reimagining a cover of Whitney Houston’s classic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” for Grey’s Anatomy, Bootstraps took to the studio to explore an entire record in this vein.

Their collective history of slow corrosion and avant-metal practice lends to the supergroup conceit that was applied from afar. For over a decade, Seattle based emcee Michael S. Martinez aka Onry Ozzborn of the group Grayskul (Rhymesayers Ent) has been known for a brooding style of hip-hop. Today, Onry preps his fifth--and boldest--album to date, called DUO on Fake Four Inc. With a guest on each track, Onry's features range from Homeboy Sandman and Aesop Rock to the indie musician Nathan Quiroga (of Iska Dhaaf ).

"I didn't plan it this way," explains Onry. "I got a couple features who I really wanted and then, as I laid out the tracks, it became a story. Other names popped into my head who would round out the album."

In addition, Onry recruits a wide range of producers--SmokeM2D6, Void Pedal Latrell Jamesand Jack Rylands--which results in a hip-hop album imbued with electronic, folk, and punk.

One the first track, “Nineteen” with Aesop Rock, Onry sets the tone by collaborating with an artist who's always pushed the boundaries musically.

On "Flee the Colony," Onry and Nathan Quiroga take a very different turn towards the indie rock. “No time to Waste,” featuring Living Legends crew member Eligh, is a motivational, up-tempo call to living life for today.

“Both Eligh & I have made it through rough times,” explains Onry. So he was the perfect emcee to collaborate with on this. Rounding out the album, there’s “Firefly”, featuring LA rapper Pigeon John which is walk into the lighter side of life.

Onry got his start in 1997 in Seattle as part of the supergroup Oldominion, considered to be the definitive hip-hop collective of the Northwest. Starting in 2000, Onry formed the group Grayskul with JFK and released titles like Bloody Radio and Graymaker, among many others on Rhymesayers Ent. Later, as a solo artist Onry released noted projects such as: Alone The Grey Area, The Gigantics, and Hold On For Dear Life.

Today, Onry has joined a perfect place for him, the Fake Four Inc family, where he started his own label Ted Records. Onry is also releasing a short thirteen film version of his project, called "duofilm" which will be available mid February, along with an accompanying Polaroid book.

Dublin quintet September Girls return with an impassioned musical and political statement in their new album Age. The ten tracks bristle with atmospheric textures and dark-hearted noise, tackling complex subject matter such as feminism, religion and life in Ireland at this point in history along the way.. Age of Indignation follows debut Cursing the Sea (2014), an album that enjoyed considerable critical acclaim .The album opens with the starkly bleak guitar riff of “Ghost”, before the band’s political views come to the fore with songs such as “Jaw on the Floor”, which is inspired by both the feminist movement and the 1916 Rising, and “Catholic Guilt”, which deals with anger towards the Catholic Church. Still retaining the swirling psychedelia and intensity of their debut, this time round they are tighter and more controlled, whilst underneath something much darker and urgent is at work.

Their third album, while still retaining their trademark pop edge, is their most experimental to date, combining alternative electronica, dark psychedelia and funk, with sweeping arrangements complimenting spluttering rhythms and booming electronics.

Flowing between the eerie calm of 'Drift' and the visceral waves of 'Roger Water', it shifts itself into new forms, like water itself. Opener ‘Mizu' sets a fluid pace for the album, which surfaces for breath only at the delicate 'Firefly' before submerging again into a realm of aquatic ambience. Explosive cuts ‘Escher Surfers’ and ‘Solar Valley' force the running order to flow between moments of serenity and calamity, much like the unpredictable nature of the seas, and the epic 'Alfa 11' slowly transforms into an all-encompassing, grandiose conclusion.

Canadian musician Woodpigeon, a.k.a. Mark Andrew Hamilton, has emerged from a brief hiatus to release his sixth full-length. Merging the best of John Grant with Avalon era Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac’s Tango in the Night, and a nod towards Kanye West’s Yeezus, the sounds are transposed to a largely acoustic setting feeding off influences from his travels across the globe. He released his first four albums via End of the Road Records, with 5 and 6 following via Fierce Panda. T R O U B L E features Woodpigeon’s current line-up of Mark Andrew Hamilton alongside Daniel Gaucher on percussion, Colin Edward Cowan on bass, and Annalea Sordi-McClure on keys. Guest appearances on the album come from David Thomas Broughton and Mary Margaret O’Hara.. Many of the songs don’t follow typical formats and chord structures but rather fold in upon themselves in a cyclical way, patterns indirectly inspired by music he heard in Turkey and Argentina.
