JOHN

CONQUEROR

Sounds like the work of a supergroup power trio made up of three vets who just wanted to get together and lay it down, making gutsy, raw, bluesy music for the sheer joy of it. The fact that this is the first time in a studio for the members of this band is mind-blowing. – JAMBANDS Black Country? Blues? Deep Blues? Rock ‘n’ Roll? “The Good Life” is American music done with passion and care, drawing plenty from the past and gleaning just as much from the present. – BLACK GROOVES They bottle everything that’s untouchably Tarantino-cool about America. – THE BLUES MAGAZINE

hard-ass blues!

There’s more soul in the opening 10 seconds of “Get Em” than in most major label output combined in the past decade. – PERFORMER MAGAZINE While John The Conqueror follows the path laid down for decades by like-minded bluesmen who ‘told it like it was,’ on “The Good Life” Moore and co. have also updated the blues idiom for a new generation – melding hard truths with hard-ass bluesrock. – ROLLING STONE Combines Southern rock with a punky edge and a smooth, blues-and-soul vibe, led by the deep, tender vocals of Pierre Moore. – CMJ

Album stream: http://youtu.be/_19VLKcoDLY OVERVIEW: THE CHARLATANS – Tim Burgess, Mark Collins, Martin Blunt and Tony Rogers - release their twelfth album, MODERN NATURE on BMG Chrysalis on 21st April 2015. The album comes after a brutally difficult year for the band following the death from brain cancer of their old friend and drummer Jon Brookes last year. Rogers says that they were determined to carry on, to honour Brookes' memory - "Jon was adamant that there was going to be another Charlatans record, and you have to put that into your own thoughts." The band went into their studio Big Mushroom in January 2014 and as Tim recalls "We were aching for the summer when we wrote it. It was freezing and we were trying to write songs that made us happy. “ The result is Modern Nature. Featuring eleven new tracks, including the recent limited edition 7” single and 6 Music A List record ‘Talking In Tones’, the album was produced by The Charlatans and Jim Spencer and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Portishead). The album features a cacophony of contributors from their three temporary drummers - Pete Salisbury of The Verve, Stephen Morris of New Order and Gabriel Gurnsey of DFA's avant-disco group Factory Floor, to Kate Bushs’ backing singers Melanie Marshall and Sandra Marvin, strings by Sean O’ Hagan and brass courtesy of Dexys’ Big Jim Paterson. Q have already described the album as “one the finest of their career.”

“Their most remarkable record in years.” – Mojo **** “Their best album in a decade” – Q ****

Overview

WARPLP264/CD264

“Through this record I aim to explore as forcefully as possible the hallucinatory, the nightmarish and the brutally visceral capacities of electronic music.” – Squarepusher Squarepusher’s legacy is unassailable. From his early releases on Rephlex and his residency at the Blue Note, through his aggressive interpretations of ensemble jazz, the peerless Music Is Rotted One Note, his musique concrète experiments, and the boundary-warping drum ‘n’ bass with which he is synonymous, Squarepusher has tilted ever forwards.

Format: Vinyl Boxlot: 15 Price: $24.99 Packaging: 2xLP in printed inners and widespine sleeve, with download code

Damogen Furies, his first full-length since 2012’s Ufabulum, sees Squarepusher’s powers in full flow. All of the recordings here were made in one take, with no edits. Damogen Furies is a record that has the brutal energy and vivaciousness of a debut. It sees the peak and confluence of the preoccupations that have emerged throughout Squarepusher’s career, approached with the antagonism and audacity of an artist who still believes in the power of the intervention.

Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $14.99 Packaging: CD in 6 panel digi with 12 page booklet

WIRE : WIRE

PINK FLAG CD PF22CD 5024545712223 $17.99 / LP PF22LP 5024545712216 $28.99 Their 13th studio album - simply titled Wire – comprises material that was written with the album in mind, but toured extensively first, as well as songs that Newman introduced to the group in the studio just prior to recording. The idea was to get the most spontaneous reaction possible from the musicians, and far from the rough and ready results one might expect from such a tack, Wire is full of swooning pop melodies with a 60s tinge and an irresistible, near motorik rhythmic momentum. One can recognise certain melodic inflections, guitar and bass motifs, and drum rhythms from Wire’s idiosyncratic vocabulary but it has a remarkable freshness. The basic tracks were recorded at Rockfield Studios with overdubs added at Brighton Electric. The 11 tracks selected for release were the ones that came together most naturally. From the outset Wire was an alliance between four very different characters and continues today with the addition, in 2012, of It Hugs Back guitarist Matthew Simms, who is around thirty years younger than the other group members. “With Matt there was a really new dynamic that had appeared in the group’s sound and that was something we wanted to capture, utilise and be creative with,” says Lewis. Wire is the first album where Simms has been involved in formulating the material from the ground up, but when the group’s particular chemistry starts working he is now very much part of the process. Lewis provides most of the lyrics for the album, their subject matter encompassing love songs, cryptic narratives and coded messages. One time, Newman asked Lewis to send over some unfinished, unformatted text so he wouldn’t be bound by what to use for the chorus. This material spawned two songs written on the same day, ‘Split Your Ends’ and the droll ‘In Manchester’. The latter has the disorientating and rather absurd situation of having “In Manchester” as a soaring chorus, when the song is not about Manchester beyond a single line in the lyric. As the album progresses, some of the sunlit pop tunes become more shadowy and it ultimately plunges into the musical black hole of ‘Harpooned’, eight churning minutes of the group’s darkest, most abrasive music to date, and a favourite in live performances since 2013. “The point where our personal narratives meet is all about change - moving on and keeping it interesting for ourselves,” says Newman. “We’re in it for the long haul and this is a one-way trip.”

BEAUTY PILL Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are CAT# BSCR011
DIGITAL List Price: $9.99 CD List Price $15.98 - UPC: 634457676824 LP List Price $22.98 - UPC: 634457676817 Release Date: April 21, 2015. Genre: Art-Pop, Electro-Rock Domain: Worldwide After over a decade releasing critically acclaimed records on Dischord, Beauty Pill emerges with an expansive and lushly produced LP on Butterscotch Records. Blending their uniquely angular brand of DC indie rock with dense layers of electronics, beats, strings, horns, noise, samples and more, Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are reflects the kind of artistic growth that takes years to emerge, and in this case those years also included band leader Chad Clark surviving a rare, life threatening heart disorder. As a songwriter, Clark effortlessly blends the personal, the political, and the universal throughout, often through a surprising lens. The death of a beloved pet becomes an exegesis on mortality in “Dog With Rabbit In Mouth, Unharmed”. The clashing of cultures in our multicultural present is expressed in the form of a mash note in the lush production “Afrikaner Barista”. “Steven and Tiwonge” depicts an imagined escape scene of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, a gay couple persecuted by the South African government. And “For Pretend” explores the perils of artists raising children. Musically, the album is informed by the band’s array of interests that includes experimental electronic music, hip-hop, vintage post-punk, jazz, and artists that refuse categorization like Arto Lindsay (whose “The Prize” is covered by Beauty Pill on this album) and Brian Eno. As well, each player brings his/her own musical history to bear on these proceedings, whether it’s Clark, Goodrich and Ocampo’s days as members of seminal D.C. art-rockers Smart Went Crazy or Cook’s work collaborating with Jon Langford of The Mekons to Britpop icons Pulp. “It’s definitely dense and charged full of sound,” Clark says of the new album. “There is no question it’s packed with ideas and details. That’s just the nature of this music.” Clark also notes that he wants listeners to feel like they are “inside the songs,” a quality that was born out of the unusual environment that Beauty Pill chose to record the bulk of this album. For two weeks, they participated in “Immersive Ideal,” a special commissioned project for Artisphere, a Washington, DC arts center that allowed visitors to observe the band at work creating the album. People were able to watch the band through a pane of glass. The band’s recording process became an art exhibit unto itself (an idea now being explored by PJ Harvey, coincidentally an artist Clark admires greatly). It was an exercise in radical transparency; a way to pull back the curtain on a process that can seem mysterious to your average listener.

BEAUTY PILL The Cigarette Girl Of The Future (Deluxe Reissue) CAT# BSCR012
DIGITAL List Price: $9.99 LP List Price $19.98 - UPC: 634457676817 Release Date: April 21, 2015. Genre: Art-Pop, Electro-Rock Domain: Worldwide

Garnering critical acclaim (9/10 on Pitchfork as well as praise from The New York Times, The Washington Post and more), this newly expanded deluxe edition of The Cigarette Girl From The Future from DC’s Beauty Pill is a testament to the endurance of a great record. Originally released on Dischord Records, Butterscotch takes the packaging and presentation to a new level with four new tracks, expanded packaging, new masters and more. Musically way ahead of its time, this is sparse, angular record is infused with an equal measure of pop sensibilities and fullon tonal deconstruction. The original five songs are in tact, but newly remastered and the four new songs sound as if the band had meant this to be a full length LP all along. Yes, an expanded re-issue, but expanded into a complete and coherent LP all its own. The deluxe packaging includes a gatefold adorned with essays from the band, the original liner notes as well as a rather humorous story of their first and failed attempt at the artwork for the record (you’ll learn that there is no connection between Butterscotch Records’ logo and Beauty Pill’s name, for example). Topped off with silver foil printing, this first pressing of the vinyl package is going to be a collectable piece for fans on clear vinyl for only 300 copies (all subsequent pressings will be another color). Beauty Pill is back from a break as bandleader Chad Clark won a battle against a lethal and rare heart condition, and the band is about to release an expansive and adventurous new LP (Beauty Pill Describes Things As They Are BSR011) as well as tour extensively. This highly praised classic of indie’s not-so-distant past will appeal to their loyal fan base as well as to their growing base of new fans.

Highlights ★ 9/10 on Pitchfork. ★ First time on vinyl. ★ Expanded to include four new tracks, including Smiths cover. ★ Foil stamp front cover printing. ★ Gatefold package with essays, original liner notes, artwork backstory and new band photos. ★ Vinyl is limited edition firstpressing on clear, only 300 copies. Subsequent pressings in new colors. ★ Full US touring schedule.

On The Way To The Peak Of Normal available as coloured vinyl

After setting the template for sampling and exotic cut'n'paste recording techniques on his debut 1980 album, Movies, former Can member Holger Czukay's second album, On the Way to the Peak of Normal, is the album where his fantastic blend of world music, crackly vocal samples, and incredible improvisational vision came together. However, his sophomore effort carried more avant-garde features than its predecessor, as the album opener and title track demonstrates. The Grรถnland vinyl issue contains four songs and features the Conny Plank-produced "Witches Multiplication Table," a track whose dark maelstrom of supernatural twitchiness beguiles in a hypnotic manner. This is a must for fans of Can and Czukay.

LAST FOREVER Trainfare Home New and old songs out of the American Tradition written and arranged by Dick Connette. Guided by composer Dick Connette and singer Sonya Cohen, Last Forever is a unique combination of instruments, talents, influences and aspirations. 'Trainfare Home', is a reissue of their second CD, originally released by Nonesuch in 2000. Together, they take a new musical approach to the simplicity, clarity and eccentric beauty of American musical traditions, both in their interpretation of folk songs, as well as in the original material. The instrumental ensemble includes guitars, strings, hammer dulcimer, harmonium, drums, hand percussion, woodwinds and horns, creating a graceful rural roots sound from a decidedly urban point of view. INFORMATION:

Drew Lustman leaves his ‘Falty DL’ persona at the door and dons his Cowboy hat for a new alter ego ‘The Crystal Cowboy’ - his cleanest, most concise record to date.

TRACKLIST:

2xLP A: Watch A Man Die Time Machine Angel Flesh B: Green Technique Wolves Hyena C: The Crystal Cowboy Onyx (ft. Le1f) The Hatchet D: Blueberry Fields Sykle

CD 01 Watch A Man Die 02 Time Machine 03 Angel Flesh 04 Green Technique 05 Wolves 06 Hyena 07 The Crystal Cowboy 08 Onyx (ft. Le1f) 09 The Hatchet 10 Blueberry Fields 11 Sykle

The eleven tracks here are a body of work that Drew put together quickly, free of the connotations and associations of his Falty DL moniker. Creating music in the small hours of the morning rejuvenated his sense of experimentation and freedom. Under this new name Drew found himself making the kind of music he would DJ with or play to friends without the pressure of the conceptual weighing him down. Like all great projects between Planet Mu and Mr. Lustman, these songs found themselves in Mike Paradinas' inbox with little fanfare, letting the music speak for itself. The album often uses the speed or tropes of hardcore and drum & bass, assembling tracks a bit like lego, but adding in Drew’s own almost opaque elements of sophisticated soul and funk to give the roughness some melodic light and emotional pull. The album opens with ‘Watch A Man Die’ which relives memories of mid-nineties drum & bass, weaving delicate melodies and smooth strings into brisk latticed drums. ‘Time Machine‘ is a stab-heavy recall of hardcore, with reverbed animal calls giving the track a humid jungle feel. ‘Angel Flesh's‘ delicate looped soul voices blend into a gaseous haze over jazzy drums, while ‘Green Technique’ layers intense beat and synth loops into a dark and disorienting vortex. ‘Wolves’ is Drew's melodic take on dub techno building crunchy, rolling drums and shivery chords into one of the albums many highlights. Placed at the albums midpoint, ‘Hyena’ takes a broken diva vocal and repeats it into an intense howl, leading into the title track whose carefully poised rhodes jazz chords and vocals are balanced against rough hardcore breaks and dense distorting bass which makes you feel like your bouncing on water. Drew takes things slower with ‘Onyx’ which featuring the rapper Le1f’s first ever sung vocals, over xylophone and light raindrop rhythms. The album finishes on the pumping electro of ‘Sykle’ whose itchy overexcited rhythms rub up against plaintive childlike piano and shimmering synths making it one of the album's most memorable highlights. "The Crystal Cowboy asks the listener to lose themselves and any inhibitions they may have as he takes the time to hold your hand and lead you through his thrilling and immersive wonderland. Good night and good luck."

GAYE ADEGBALOLA & THE WILD RUTZ IS IT STILL GOOD TO YA?

Gaye Adegbalola & The Wild Rutz (pronounced ROOTS) is an a cappella blues quartet complemented by percussion and occasional guitar. Gaye continues her signature “Saffire sassiness” and topical commentary in her songwriting on this CD of all original songs. Gaye’s songs, as always, reflect her left-of-center sense of humor, her love of life and deep commitment to social activism including feminism, gay rights, and personal liberation. Though the Wild Rutz often draw comparisons to Sweet Honey in the Rock, their repertoire is decidedly different. In this world of screaming electrified instrumental acrobatics and digital perfectionism, this group of seasoned activist musicians delights in returning to their RUTZ! This album celebrates the Creator’s primary instruments: THE VOICE and THE BEATS. Four unique voices combine with select rhythmic backup to add a previously unrecorded dimension to the blues.

STREET DATE: 4/7/2015

Gaye Adegbalola, The Rutz’ amazing front woman, is a multi Music Award winner and a founding member of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women (1984-2009). Gaye plays guitar, harmonica and is best known for her profound songwriting. As of 2014, her discography includes 10 CDs released by Alligator Records as well as featured tracks on several Alligator compilations and the Hot Toddy/ VizzTone CD, Gaye Without Shame. Gaye has released 5 CDs on her own label, Hot Toddy Music, and is featured in 3 DVDs including the recently released “The Old Black Dyke Show”. The other members of the group – Tanyah Cotton, Gloria Jackson, M.D., and Marta Fuentes – have extensive and varied musical credentials, including decades of work with other brilliant musicians in a multitude of genres. Aside from their musical talents, these women are historians, healers, activists and visionaries. ON TOUR NOW RADIO & PRESS

ARTIST: SLUG ALBUM: RIPE LABEL: MEMPHIS INDUSTRIES NORTH AMERICA STREET DATE: 4/21/2015 CD-MI-0340 – 5060146095266 – $12.99 White Coloured vinyl LP w/ Download – LP-MI-0340 – 5060146095273 - $18.99 SLUG is the brand new musical venture from the mind of Ian Black, a merrily disruptive influence on the North East music for more than a decade. His debut album RIPE will be released on Memphis Industries on 13 April 2015.

Tracklisting: 1. Grimacing Mask 2. Cockeyed Rabbit Wrapped in Plastic 3. Sha La La 4. Eggs and Eyes 5. Greasy Mind 6. Shake Your LooseTeeth 7. Weight of Violence 8. Running To Get Past Your Heart 9.Peng Peng 10. Kill Your Darlings 11. At Least Show That You Care

With SLUG, Black wanted to get away from the tinnitus inducing noise rock of his formative bands, letting the idea dictate the song’s form and sonic palette. Black says of the album “'What ifs' play a massive part in RIPE. What if we use a stoner metal riff and use it like a dub bass part or what if we combined the drumming style of John Bonham with James Brown beat and the squelch bass of Claudio Simonetti and Fabio Pignatelli”. Taking inspiration from film soundtracks (Enter the Dragon, Suspiria), 20th century abstract and minimalist music but also the rock and funk chops of Led Zeppelin, Prince and Funkadelic, the resulting album is concise, unselfconscious, idiosyncratic and exquisitely executed. Animators Brothers Quay, Phil Mulloy and Jan Svankmajer oblique approaches to subject matter also rubbed off on Black and lend the SLUG album an air of the hypnagogic. RIPE opener Grimacing Mask tackles how to break the cycle of personal and work related problems. Cockeyed Rabbit Wrapped in Plastic focuses on the rocky foundations of apparently immutable institutions of power. Greasy Mind is the most pop moment on the album that sees Zeppelin matched with 80’s Madonna and screaming guitar solos. Running To Get Past Your Heart rides a wave of simplicity with a three note distorted bass riff, a one line chorus purely based on the phonetics, bongos and drums recorded with two vocal mics. Kill Your Darlings is a straight to video horror film soundtrack dealing with how, as an artist, you have to avoid treating each creation like one of your kids. The album was recorded at Field Music’s Roker studio with Peter and David Brewis on production duties. The Field Music brothers also return the favour for Black who toured extensively with their band as bassist. They play on the album and in the surreally fun yet precision engineered live band where they’re joined by Andrew Lowther on bass and Rhys Patterson. It was playing with Field Music that gave Ian the impetus to start SLUG “you cannot be on the road for a year with the guys and not feel inspired. Sometimes that helps create a sense of self belief that you can create your own thing.....however delusional that maybe.” SLUG have made one of the year’s most inventive and rewarding debut long players. 2015 is ripe for their picking.

Copenhagen’s Ring Them Bells are no strangers to rock ’n roll. No One’s Dead / We’re Just Dressed in Black reflects the four members’ mutual enthusiasm for noise rock and massive soundscapes. Powerful riffs provide a central focus to support the surging melodies and vocals. This is classic songwriting with the backbone referencing the ‘60s soul and blues era, combined with psychedelic and noise influences. The sound runs the spectrum from the experimental rock of the Velvet Underground to the psychedelic rush of The Brian Jonestown Massacre to the feedback-laden melodic noise rock of The Jesus & Mary Chain.

With this new full-length album, Ring Them Bells dig deep into the heart of rock music and claims a position as one the best current Scandinavian rock acts. There is no fear or limitation – all tracks on No One’s Dead / We’re Just Dressed in Black are recorded proof of a band that went into the studio determined not to compromise their creative vision. The band deftly integrates intelligent songwriting with hefty explosions of noise and searing, feedbacking guitars that devastate and ravage. The four-piece act has created a powerful record that penetrates your mind and leaves no room for apathy. No One’s Dead / We’re Just Dressed in Black was recorded in Oslo and Copenhagen deep in the darkest, coldest winter when the way out seems completely impassable. Winter night has put a significant mark on the artistic work around the album's genesis, but the songs are also complimented by brighter sounds, where the mental desperation of the dark night is challenged by the need for light and freedom. The Nordic winter cold has been translated into powerful central riffs surrounded by a ton of flowing melodies and rich, seductive vocals. Ring Them Bells have crafted this album in a creative collaboration with the Norwegian producer and sound magician Marcus Forsgren (Jaga Jazzist, Serena-Maneesh, The Lionheart Brothers) and musically combines the band’s passion for experimenting with noise rock and grandiose soundscapes. Their first and self-titled album showed a band with big ambitions and a new take on creating intelligent rock music. With their new album, No One’s Dead / We’re Just Dressed in Black, Ring Them Bells has condensed their sound even further and stands out as a truly unique rock act. Ring Them Bells are not novices to the music scene: Johannes Nidam (guitar and vocals), Jan Johansen (guitar), Moogie Johnson (bass) and Johannes Dybkjaer Andersson (drums) have all played vital rolls in various successful and critically acclaimed Danish bands throughout the years. All four have roots in experimental, alternative rock and various successful Danish bands, ranging from pop to rock to electronic. Every member has had an international music career, and the band's guitarist, Jan Johansen, has toured with Neil Halstead of Slowdive/Mojave 3. In the past few years, Ring Them Bells have played countless concerts and festival shows in Denmark, Sweden and Norway and were invited to Nordklang Festival in Switzerland and the Øya Festival in Oslo. They were also invited by David Eugene Edwards of Wovenhand to support them on their tour in Scandinavia. When Ring Them Bells released their debut album in March 2013 (on Burnt Toast Vinyl), they took the musical experience one step further and joined forces with Danish craft brewer Mikkeller – the aim was to both taste and hear Ring Them Bells. The world renowned Copenhagen based brewer Mikkeller crafted a 10% Imperial Porter beer inspired by Ring Them Bells' music.

What began as a solo project in 2013 for singer-songwriter Will Rutledge developed into Pupppy, the Purchase, NY quartet lead by Rutledge (vocals, guitar), joined by Sam Skinner on guitar, Victor Massari on drums, and Nick Hasko on bass. Pupppy puts all their cards on the table in the form of nine charming pop songs on the band’s debut, Shit In The Apple Pie, out April 21, 2015 on Father/Daughter Records. While writing the record, Rutledge struggled with feelings of inadequacy and self-sabotage, “shitting in my own apple pie,” he explains. “The songs on the record are songs I had neglected for a long time due to feeling insecure about them or that they weren’t what I should be writing, recording, and performing - but I really wanted to, and that’s what drove me crazy. So making the decision to create an album felt like I was building a door to leave the old sentiments of insecurity and over-thinking behind to enter into a realm of comfort and confidence.”

Recommended If You Like... Mikal Cronin Ben Kweller Pavement Ben Folds Rutledge worked on the album with guitarist Sam Skinner for nearly 14 months. Instead of succumbing to the pressure of releasing an album, the pair took as much time necessary to allow their ideas to germinate. “Davies’ playing is extraordinary – full of propulsion and energy and melodic invention.” — PEOPLE MAGAZINE “She wields an electric guitar as if it were a wand.” — LOS ANGELES TIMES “I believe my reputation backs up my ability to recognize exceptional blues guitarists. Such a one is Debbie Davies. Hear her now.” — JOHN MAYALL Debbie Davies is one of the top blues artists in the world. She has received ten nominations for Blues Music Awards, and in 1997 and 2010 won the award for Best Contemporary Female Blues Artist. Davies cut her teeth playing in blues and rock ‘n roll bands in the San Francisco Bay area before returning to Los Angeles in 1984, where she played lead guitar in Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs, an all-female band led by wife of British blues pioneer, John Mayall. In 1988 she was recruited by Albert Collins to join the Icebreakers, and for the next three years she was a featured guitarist performing behind one of the most innovative bluesmen of all time. Debbie played on John Mayall’s 1990 album, A Sense of Place, and in 1991 she recorded with Albert Collins and the Icebreakers on the Grammy nominated self-titled release for Point Blank/Virgin Records. In September 1993 Davies came out with her debut solo release on Blind Pig Records, which featured a cameo by Collins. Since then, Debbie has produced eleven solo recordings (including 2009’s ground-breaking and acclaimed all instrumental HOLDING COURT, on Little Dipper/Vizztone) and two collaborative CD’s with guitarists Tab Benoit, Kenny Neal, Anson Funderburgh and Otis Grand. The roster of other artists who have joined Debbie on her recordings reads like a who’s who of the blues: Albert Collins, Ike Turner, James Cotton, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Coco Montoya, Duke Robillard, Tommy Shannon, Chris “Whipper” Layton, Sugar Ray Norcia, Charlie Musselwhite, Bruce Katz.. Debbie also played with Robin Rogers and Tommy Castro’s Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise Revue. Debbie Davies’ music has always encompassed many of the blues styles as well as reflected the music she heard as a youth. So when she sings It’s All Blues, she is truly putting her arms around all of the blues styles from Chicago to New Orleans, New York to Austin, to LA. LOVE SPIN reaffirms Debbie’s place among the blues elite. In addition to her usual band mates, the album features Terry Hanck (sax, vocals), Dana Robbins (sax), Dave Keys (piano) and Jay Stollman (vocals).

New Zealand’s Surf City released their jaw-dropping kiwi guitar buzz masterpiece “Kudos” in Sept 2010 and the follow-up “We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This” in 2013. With a new album due, time to snap these up at low mid price. Updating the psych haze of the Spacemen with the circular drone of Animal Collective and the offkilter melodies of The Clean with the drive of Interpol, Surf City is the perfect mix of everything you loved about the early 80’s New Zealand jangle and the 60’s blur of Velvets and Zombies with the shapeshifting songwriting of today. MONO92CD

5065002002860 $15.99

All vinyl copies include a free album CD in a printed card wallet and poster. Over the past decade, instrumental trio STEARICA (Torino, Italy) have gained a cult following in the independent music underground, touring and performing live with the likes of Girls Against Boys, NoMeansNo, Dälek, Tarentel, Damo Suzuki, Coliseum, and forming the Acid Mothers Temple and Stearica Orchestra, which recorded a full-length album together. The key is their powerful and adventurous sound, which is geometrical yet visceral: so intense that there is no need for words. Both the concept of ‘fertile’ as ‘life-giving' and the revolutionary impulses of the Arab Spring and the Indignants protests in Barcelona provided inspiration for this latest work from STEARICA, Examples of this fertility are also seen in the artistic collaborations with the musicians who contributed in different ways to the gestation of the album: fellow travellers of the independent international underground, including Scott McCloud of Girls Against Boys, who provided the vocals for ‘AMREEKA’, Ryan Patterson of Coliseum (vocals on ‘NUR’) and groundbreaking saxophonist Colin Stetson (brass orchestration on ‘SHĀH MĀT’). 1.
