louis logic - Look On The Blight Side 11/12/13

Another great album from an artist who had been quite for 7 years. louis’ new record saw him taking chances in terms of the musicality of his sound but still remaining true to his roots lyrically. We saw great press placements and radio spins for this album (reaching #3 on Hip-Hop CMJ!) and without any visual assets (two videos will be forthcoming this spring)! Available on CD and LP.

Blue Sky Black Death - Glaciers 10/1/13

The Seattle/Bay Area duo’s much anticipated third album on FFI after workign with Hip-Hop heavywieghts NORE, Cam’ron, Dinero Farrar and Nacho Picasso was a big hit this fall with core fans as well as having them on the road for most of October and November with label mates Sister Crayon. True to its name, Glaciers clocks in at a shade under an hour and only 5 tracks featuring Child Actor, JMSN and Lotte Kestner they gave you a true listening experience with every track. Available on CD and 2LP.

Upcoming for 2014 Bike For Three! - So Much Forever 2/11/14

6 years after the release of More Heart Than Brains, the well lucked combination of Buck 65 and Greetings From Tuskan are back as Bike For Three! Garnering almost 50k listens to the ‘leak’ tracks on the BFT soundcloud page and an album preview to go live on MSN 2/11/14, So Much Forever looks to be a big record for both Buck 65 and Greetings From Tuskan. Buck 65 will also have a full touring schedule this year in the works planning Canadian, US, European and Japan tours all of which he will be performing new BFT material. ADDing to radio 2/10 & 2/11, expected to chart as the #1 ADD in both Hip-Hop & RPM for CMJ, Earshot! and Collge Radio Charts. Video announcement forth coming by March.

The Baseball Project3 rd

NATIONAL release date cd/LP: March 25th, 2014 The Baseball Project is: Scott McCaughey (Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, Bass, Percussion, SF Giants) Steve Wynn (Vocals, Guitars, New York Yankees) Linda Pitmon (Drums, Percussion, Vocals, Minnesota Twins) Peter Buck (12- and 6-string Guitars, Fender VI Bass, Banjo, Washington Senators) Mike Mills (Bass, Vocals, Atlanta Braves)

"That’s the true harbinger of spring,” legendary baseball impresario Bill Veeck once opined, “not crocuses or swallows returning to Capistrano, but the sound of a bat on the ball." This year there’s another welcome sign that spring is on the way, that baseball is about to resume its rightful place on the national stage, and that all will once again be right with the world: the new album from The Baseball Project, 3rd hits the streets a week before the opening day of the 2014 season. Along with 17 ace new songs about baseball, 3rd also showcases the band’s musical muscle in was that 2008’s Volume 1: Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails and 2011’s Volume 2: High and Inside only hinted at. “I think this album most represents us as a rock band,” says Steve Wynn. “Both how well we play together, and how long we’ve been playing together in The Baseball Project and in other configurations over the past 30 years. You can really feel it on this record — baseball or no baseball, it’s just a good rock record.” “We don’t have any rules about what constitutes a baseball song,” Scott McCaughey explains. “It can be anything from a character study of an obscure guy from the 1920s, to something that just happened, to something completely ridiculous like ‘Extra Inning of Love,’ which takes the baseball-as-love metaphor and tries to stretch it as far as it will go.”

BIG SCARY NOT ART

bark138 CD / LP+MP3

STREET DATE: MARCH 25, 2014 “The band have reinvented their sound with lush new sonic experimentation - each track is wrapped in emotive and enchanting harmonies and perfectly matched percussion, culminating in a record that gets better with every listen.” - Triple J feature album, 8/7/13 “Big Scary never repeat themselves and Not Art is an intriguing sonic adventure.” 8/2/13

The story of Big Scary begins in Melbourne, Australia, where duo Tom Iansek and Jo Syme, armed with just acoustic guitars and egg shakers, started playing songs together in the living room of Syme’s parents’ house, gradually working up to a bolder, more expansive sound by incorporating electric guitars, drums, synths and piano. What began as a few rainy day acoustic ballads in their first incarnation soon grew, and before long, the newly named Big Scary were writing anything they pleased – fuzzed-out garage rock; piano-led pop; intricate, pastoral instrumentals – each imbued with an effortless pop sensibility and lightness of touch that would quickly see the duo attract a strong following in their home country.

Following a series of early self-released singles and EPs, Big Scary released the intimately crafted debut album Vacation in 2011 via the band’s own label Pieater. The album brought the pair widespread acclaim, and earned the duo a large Australian audience with nominations for ‘Album Of The Year’ from Triple J and ‘Breakthrough Artist Of The Year’ from AIR (Australian Independent Record Labels Association), plus a small but growing cult following overseas. 2012 saw Big Scary take its first small steps onto the world stage – earning further underground acclaim via a self-funded North American tour that saw Tom and Jo play SXSW, CMW, and CMJ, impressing whatever audiences happened upon the versatility, lovable magnetism, intelligent songwriting and dynamic live performances that make up the band’s riveting shows.

On the heels of their adventures abroad, an invigorated Tom and Jo returned home and began recording their second full length album. Grappling with the pressures and perceived responsibilities of their Australian success, the daunting goal of bringing their music to wider audiences, and their own expectations of themselves as writers and creators, the band eventually settled into making an album that would be, paradoxically, hotly anticipated at home while acting simultaneously as a first introduction to almost all audiences elsewhere: Not Art. The Melbourne-based duo has become a household name in Australian indie-pop circles and has a growing cult following overseas. Barsuk Records is thrilled to be the U.S. home for the band’s forthcoming album Not Art, a slow-burning stunner produced and engineered by Iansek and mixed by Tom Elmhirst (Amy Winehouse, The Kills, Arcade Fire, Adele) that distills influences of indie rock song structure, pop and hip-hop production, and experimental ambient music.

Chicago Underground Duo Locus “Are we listening to perfection or a series of train wrecks that hang in perfect balance? “ - John Garratt, PopMatters “...the duo captures the bits, bytes, fumes and fusions of our age with an expert blend of electronic sounds and acoustic instruments. Melodies and motifs are ephemeral, a constant flow of ideas and sound, grafting the organic and electric. A fitting soundtrack to our times.” - Paul Acquaro, The Free Jazz Collective Follow up to Chicago Underground Duo’s (Chad Taylor & Rob Mazurek) successful 2012 LP Age Of Energy and their second release on Northern Spy. For fans of Tortoise, Stereolab, Flying Lotus, Rob Mazurek Exploding Star Rrchestra. Jazz heads and indie rockers will both dig this.

“Like the music of Sun Ra, Chicago Underground Duo does not exist in one genre, in one era, or on one plane. In fact, it’s a black hole sucking every ounce of music ever created into an unknown abyss.”

- Justin Spicer, KEXP

“Creating in the moment like their AACM brethren but with the lo-fi electronic effects of an indie act and other creative mashings, the Chicago Underground Duo continue to make the case for all the original sounding music that is possible by just two, open minded and innovative musicians.”

- S. Victor Aaron, Something Else! Tracklisting: 1. Locus 2. Boss 3. The Human Economy 4. Yaa Yaa Kole

“The Chicago Underground Duo is every bit an equal partnership...the creative energy manifested by these two men shows no sign of fading away.” - Phil Freeman, WIRE

A delirious and touching novel of fathers and sons, the dangers of compromise and thwarted ambition, told with humor and energy by a writer as comfortable in a rock club as a bookstore. A backstage epic of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but also sippy cups, pillow fights, and Baby Bjorns, Wonderkid is Almost Famous through the looking glass.

Praise for Wonderkid “I thought about these characters even when I wasn’t reading the book, and the story will stay with me for a very long time. Wonderkid has both enormous entertainment value and serious literary worth, a very hard trick to pull off.” —Rosanne Cash, author of Composed “Wesley Stace absolutely captures the band experience: the triumphs, the letdowns, the sell-outs, the success, and the scandal, with an extra helping of absurdity. There were times reading this book that I could actually smell the dank dressing rooms, or feel the bus rolling down the highway to the next gig.” —Peter Buck “I can’t believe that this amazing book exists. Wonderkid is by far the best music novel I’ve ever read, and the most unexpectedly wild ride I’ve ever been on. Wonderkid is uplifting, inspiring, unhinged, and unpredictable, just like rock ’n’ roll itself.” —Dan Zanes “At turns illuminating and heartbreaking—but always funny—Wonderkid is A Visit from the Goon Squad for the kiddie music world. A pitch-perfect excavation into the lighter heart of the music industry.” —Colin Meloy

Release Date: March 25, 2014 TRACK LISTING:

In 2000 a deep love for Bardo Pond provided the inspiration to establish Three Lobed Recordings. Fourteen years later, Bardo Pond and Three Lobed Recordings are proud to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the band’s initial releases with Refulgo, an epic double LP collection of the band’s earliest 7” singles, split 7” tracks, and compilation appearances. This collection, the first of a series, compiles these essential Bardo Pond tracks in a manner to augment their enjoyment by longtime fans while also introducing this material to those who do not yet possess an encyclopedic knowledge of these modern psych rock pioneers. The material presented on Refulgo all comes from long out-of-print releases (which have also been largely unavailable digitally) and the entire content has been remastered. It has never sounded better. Bardo Pond has stood alongside psych rock peers yet unmistakably alone over the course of the twenty-plus years as a band. While their catalog is vast and spans a virtual wheelbarrow-load of albums, singles, splits and compilations, what is perhaps most remarkable is just how quickly as a band they developed their unique sound and voice. Refulgo presents as compelling an argument for that thesis as its two LPs worth of music present a band whose collective vision emerged effectively fully formed. Their first 7”, “Die Easy” / “Apple Eye” (first released on Compulsiv in January of 1994) is a primordial ooze of swampy, sludgey psych blues that clearly demonstrated the essential DNA that has become Bardo Pond’s multi-decade calling card. Track those building blocks through the subsequent releases and the sound is there in full bloom quickly, really by “New Drunks,” but really stretches out in full within the twentyminute triumphant, genre-defining victory lap which is “Sangh Seriatim” (first released on Drunken Fish’s “Harmony of the Spheres” compilation in November of 1996). The temporal gap between the tracks from that first single, the first two presented on Refulgo, and “Sangh Seriatim,” the compilation’s concluding track, is shockingly small at less than three years. Most bands never fully realize their potential; this compilation demonstrates that Bardo Pond did it with remarkable speed as well as a high degree of maturity.

GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL/ELECTRONIC FILE UNDER: “G” Golden Retriever RELEASE DATE : March 25, 2014

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN Golden Retriever is the duo of Matt Carlson (modular synthesizer) and Jonathan Sielaff (bass clarinet), two musicians who blur the line between sounds created electronically and acoustically. The pair formed Golden Retriever in 2008 and began to develop a language informed by the practices of free improvisation as well as the tradition of American experimental electronic composers like Alvin Curran & David Behrman. Golden Retriever creates music that is creatively challenging and structurally complex while remaining inviting and emotionally dynamic rather than adopting a confrontational stance toward the listener. Seer, their second release for Thrill Jockey, was recorded and assembled over the course of two years at the artists’ studio “Worksound” in Portland, OR. The relaxed timetable gave Carlson and Sielaff an opportunity to write based around new instruments and techniques and to spend considerable time meticulously editing the work. This extends the process employed on their Thrill Jockey debut Occupied with the Unspoken, composing and arranging using editing as a compositional tool. The opening track “Petrichor” shows Carlson using an 11-limit just intonation system and can, if listened to at a significant volume, create otoacoustic emissions: the generation of new resonance within the innerear as a rectification of two perfectly toned and opposing frequencies. The use of this phenomenon as musical material was pioneered by Maryanne Amacher in her sound installations of the 70s and 80s. The song “Sharp Stones” finds Sielaff weaving complex melodic phrases over Carlson’s bed of synth-processed piano sounds, toying with the gestures of modal free jazz. Their ability to move between abstract sound exploration and traditionally engaging musical structures is demonstrated perfectly on “Flight Song,” which features a mantra-like bass clarinet melody beholden to shimmering synthesizer patterns. Golden Retriever’s compositions are inviting and relentlessly listenable, embracing both emotional depth and wild abandon without betraying the hidden framework of complexity within.

Release Date: March 25, 2014 Genres : psych-rock, psych-folk, blues, doom, ambient, electro-acoustic, improvisation “I was born to lose; I won’t have this form forever.” So begins Horseback’s fifth full-length studio record, Piedmont Apocrypha, with an incantation that could very well serve as the shapeshifting band’s raison d’être. Since before 2007, Horseback has served as a musical vehicle for multi-instrumentalist Jenks Miller (also of Mount Moriah and various solo outfits), chronicling his prolific, exuberant, and at times altogether whimsical investigation of heavy music(s) and their relationship with Western mysticism. Thus far, Horseback has embodied (and shed) many forms, from the serene, fuzzed-out, near neoclassical bliss of Impale Golden Horn, to the caustic, poisoned noisescapes of Forbidden Planet, to the crushing psych-rock (black metal? you tell us!) found on The Invisible Mountain and Half Blood. While genre tags are difficult with shape-shifting bands like Horseback, some common threads are readily apparent across each of these records: regardless of the style, there’s some otherworldly, hypnotic quality in the music, conjured by ritualistic repetition and a layered depth in the instrumental arrangements. And each record demonstrates an unmistakable internal logic, its own a self-contained universe of sound. Some have referred to Horseback records as riddles to be solved: once you crack the code, that sonic universe is yours to explore. Musically, Piedmont Apocrypha gestures to the pastoral hues of Impale Golden Horn (released on vinyl by Three Lobed for the first time in 2012), but there’s a structured quality to the tracks here that fits in line with Horseback’s “rock” records. Make no mistake: this is a heavy record, but in the way Comus’ First Utterance is heavy, or in the way Amon Düül’s Phallus Dei is heavy. It’s that patient, smoke-clogged, ritualistic vibe, solemn with the noticeable presence of layered organ and harmonium tones (perhaps a subtle nod to Terry Riley or even Olivier Messiaen). Indeed, for all its farreaching strangeness, Piedmont Apocrypha may be the most approachable Horseback record yet: harsh vocals are used sparingly, sung (and otherwise intelligible) vocals are relatively prominent, and paint-peeling, high-frequency noise is almost entirely absent. As one might expect from its title, this record is also heavy with a sense of place. Thematically, Piedmont Apocrypha takes on the skin-shedding revisionist history of North Carolina’s piedmont region, a place of conflict, proud culture(s), and intertwined mythologies. The fact that both Three Lobed (Jamestown, NC) and Phil Blank (Chapel Hill, NC) are involved further emphasizes this record’s ties to the Tar Heel State.

GENRE : EXPERIMENTAL/ELECTRONIC FILE UNDER: “P” Porras, Jon “B” Barn Owl RELEASE DATE : March 25, 2014

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA

Jon Porras creates drone music with a refined sense of EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN atmosphere and remarkable forward motion. Regardless of the TRACK LISTING: tools he uses, be it guitars and stacks of amplifiers or modular synthesizers, Porras creates cavernous sound-worlds that are as 01. Apeiron (6:55) inviting as they are alien. Light Divide, his second solo release 02. Recollection (7:32) for Thrill Jockey, shows Porras shifting his focus entirely to 03. Divide (6:27) 04. New Monument (5:20) electronic synthesis, using a wide array of analog and digital 05. Pleiades (5:02) systems to exponentially expand his sonic palate. The resulting sounds are silhouettes of distant rhythms, abstracted traces of techno wastelands that come in and out of focus like an urban, SALES POINTS post-industrial sprawl being overtaken by fog. Jon Porras is one half of the San Francisco duo Barn Porras constructed and arranged the tracks on Light Divide as an architect would design a building, thinking of the sub-bass as a foundation, percussion as walls and support beams, and white noise and oblique melodies as the light filling the open spaces. Rather than writing passages or song structures, he focused on designing sounds from the ground up, building gestural movements with these sculpted slabs. Through this technique, patterns and musical phrases emerge in subtle and surprising ways. This theme of architecture and design is reflected in the album cover, which was taken at Maison La Roche, a villa designed and built by Le Corbusier. Light Divide reveals Porras as a restless explorer, constantly finding new means by which to create expansive, impressionistic music. It demands close listening, and stands apart in Porras’ solo and Barn Owl discography for its intense attention to detail. Koen Holtkamp creates music that exists simultaneously in large and small scales. His compositions lend themselves to careful examination, with each sound precisely placed. Holtkamp (who is one-half of Mountains) considers every instrument he uses carefully and pays specific attention to the environment, actual or digital, in which that instrument is being recorded and processed. They also expand and evolve gradually, giving a sense of boundlessness that extends not only to a specific song or album, but also to his discography as a whole. On Motion, Holtkamp plays with these ideas of scale and space, using a shifting array of analog, digital and acoustic sources to explore the perceived effect of moving from one dynamic space to another. He excels at coaxing the sublime out of the synthetic, writing music that seems as if it has existed in nature for eons, but can only now be uncovered using modern electronic instrumentation.

CATHY LEMONS Black Crow

In life, love, and in art, Cathy Lemons is no brakes, all throttle....Cathy Lemons is a blues singing legend who has performed regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area for 25 years. She has been described as “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S” (Real Blues 2010) with a “velvety and hypnotic voice—resonant of “a female Howlin’ Wolf” (Fulltimeblues 2010). Originally from Dallas, TX she honed her chops with the likes of Anson Funderburg and performed with Stevie Ray Vaughan. She has worked with some of the great names in blues including John Lee Hooker (she toured as his send-off singer in 1987), Tommy Castro, Ron Thompson, Kid Andersen, Steve Freund, and many others. In her new Squeeze Play/Vizztone release, BLACK CROW, Cathy and her band hone the vibrant gospel, blues, and R&B traditions of her native Texas into a woman’s love rights for the new milennium. Adding the rich flavors of Memphis soul, James Brown funk, and sweet Delta blues, the recording illustrates Cathy’s personal story of joy, heartache, and redemption. Of the ten tunes included, six were written by Cathy, with covers by New Orleans legend Earl King, Kim Wilson (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds), James Brown, and Kieran Kane (the O’Kanes). Of particular note is the emotional ache and breathless beauty of the title tune, “Black Crow,” co-written with producer/multi-instrumentalist Stevie Gurr (Elvin Bishop, Dr. John, Zigaboo Modeliste), which is so compelling it begs repeated listening. Recorded at the Greaseland Studios of co-producer “Kid” Andersen, along with guest musicians Doug “Mr. Low” James (Roomful Of Blues, Jimmy Vaughn) and highly respected guitarist, VizzTone artist Volker Strifler, Cathy has recorded what is indeed her best work ever.

Mikey Junior traveling south

For a musical style that has historically placed so much weight on lineage, the passing of more and more of the old masters poses a dire question: What is the future of the blues and who will lead the charge? Well, for blues fans in the Northeast United States, that question is routinely answered every night Mikey Junior hits the stage. His infectious personality and absolute command of his medium leave little doubt the blues is in good hands. Self-taught from his impressive collection of blues vinyl, Mikey was a full time musician before he even graduated high-school. By the time he was in his early twenties, seasoned players were taking notice and it wasn’t long before one blues society after another scrambled to get him to their stage. Before long, Mikey was a staple of the summer blues circuit on the East Coast. So it came as no surprise that his newest release found its way into the eclectic and youthful roster of the Vizztone Label Group. Traveling South reveals a young blues artist at the top of his game, telling stories we can all relate to, while drawing us deep into the roots of blues music via his utter mastery of the diatonic and chromatic harmonicas. Produced by Dave Gross, this album has a level of depth, maturity, restraint and musicality that reaches the soul through his impassioned vocals, bringing a whole new dimension to his already impressive catalog. Well-written originals and choice covers are brought to life with a vision that truly separates Mikey from his contemporaries.

“Mikey Junior is exactly what blues needs today — talented, engaging and young. He bridges the gap between generations of music lovers and makes it cool to love something old-school.” —Blues Revue Magazine, 2011
