SoUthPaw ReCoRDS Southpaw Records is pleased to announce an exclusive distribution partnership with Redeye Worldwide. Southpaw was established in 2009 by two California transplants in Santa Cruz, CA. The label began as small, meticulously curated, online distro of new adored; garage, power pop and punk records. In the summer of 2009 the label moved 90 miles north to Oakland, CA in the midst of yet another Bay Area garage rock explosion. Southpaw quickly began releasing hand-dubbed cassettes and short run 7”s from local acts. Releasing early records for Ty Segall, Shannon & The Clams, Useless Eaters and Bare Wires. Today we specialize in the newest Bay Area garage, punk and power pop talent. Future plans include the reissuing of out of print, classic Bay Area titles for the new generations to enjoy.

Few boast the pedigree to forge something so simultaneously listenable and invitingly bizarre. “All I am about is making history,”
says Janka Nabay. After a string of cassette releases, Nabay became a star of electronic bubu m u s i c b a c k h o m e i n Sierra Leone. But he was soon forced to escape his homeland’s explosive civil war in the 1990s. Over the years, Nabay gradually rebuilt his musical life i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s while supporting himself working at hotels and fried chicken restaurants.
Nabay’s bubu music may sound futuristic, but its existence spans centuries. The original bubu is cloaked in mythology: as legend has it, a young “bubu boy” took the music from witches 500 years ago, brought it to the public at large, and sacrificed his own life in the process. Over time, bubu evolved into a music played collectively on percussive instruments and bamboo horns. Upon the arrival of Islam in Sierra Leone, the hypnotic sound of bubu music was adapted for processionals during Ramadan. As Janka says: “Bubu is an old, old music, but people don’t know about it. You can add new things into the beat if you know it really well, and make your own sound out of it.”

Foundation Ska is one of the top compilations to explore the greatness of the legendary Skatalites. This top-tier Jamaican ska band featured the cream of the island’s musicians in a true supergroup. Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso, and Johnny Moore were already recognized as the best players on the island and Don Drummond’s legendary status eclipsed them all. Adding Lloyd Knibbs and Lloyd Brevette as the rhythm section and Jackie Mittoo on piano, the Skatalites’ greatness was unrivaled. The album takes the dream-state of Teengirl Fantasy’s 2010 album ‘7AM’ deep into the next day, stretching ambient themes in multiple directions, scattering with the morning light. ‘8AM’ is Teengirl Fantasy’s most introspective and abstracted work so far. It still pulses with the muscle memory of house and disco, slow-motion sub bass, chiming synth melodies, and the airy, perfumed chords of early techno, but takes a line of flight away from songs, immersing the listener in a gently invigorating space. Pieced together from evocative fragments and longer beat-driven tracks, the music is melodic and dreamy, yet sharp and clear. The only vocal comes from Khalif Jones (f.k.a. Daniel Brandt, co-founder of Germany’s electroacoustic ensemble Brandt Brauer Frick, joins the Erased Tapes family with his solo debut album Eternal Something – released worldwide on March th 24 2017. What started off as a more simplistic idea soon evolved into something a lot more complex as the London and Berlin based music producer travelled across the world, experimenting with various other artists and different instruments. From his father’s cabin based in the German countryside with access to nothing but cymbals, to being surrounded by guitars in Joshua Tree, his unexpected journey soon progressed into what became his first solo album. Daniel played nearly all instruments himself with the only exception being fellow musicians Florian Juncker on trombone, Manu Delago on hang drum and Andreas Voss on cello. Using his Berlin studio as his main base for recording, Brandt created an album that encapsulates the idea that despite setting out with a particular creative vision, external influences and environments will always shift the process, and create an Eternal Something.

“The initial idea was to make a cymbal album. I wanted to surround myself with all types of cymbals. I locked myself into my father’s cabin in the woods for three days. That was the moment I realised it was not possible for me to make an album just with cymbals because other ideas and instruments imposed themselves on me. I had a clear sense of what I wanted to do now. The intention was to let the songs evolve by themselves and not edit too much, keep it raw and have an explosionlike energy to them. I wanted to create a different sound, songs that build up like dance tunes but don't feel like club music at all. Travelling around in California for two months gave me the possibility to deeply get into this concept outside my normal environment. Robert Raths, who served as a great motivator throughout the whole process (I guess he had listened to the record more than I ever had) came up with the perfect order for the songs. This record is about failing to make the original plan happen, but then the discovery of something I couldn't even think of before.” Prior to being enlisted to create the album artwork, Iranian artist Shaz Madani coincidentally had also planned a trip to Joshua Tree where she documented her own experience of Eternal Something, forming the visual counterpart to the record. BIO: It’s been eight years since Scott Kannberg, aka Spiral Stairs, released any new music. He knows that. The years just have a habit of slipping away sometimes. The Real Feel – the Pavement guitarist and Preston School Of Industry leader’s 3rd album – arrived in 2009, just as Pavement were announcing a hugely successful burst of reunion shows through 2010. “Then, after the Pavement shows, I moved with my wife to go live in a house in Australia,” the amiable Scott remembers, of those years of seeming inactivity. “Then we had a kid, and that sort of got in the way. I tried to do music, but all of a sudden it was two years later and I’m mowing my lawn and tending my garden.” You can’t hurry genius – not even the genial, unforced and unpretentious genius that has long been Scott’s forte. What’s for sure is his second album as Spiral Stairs, Doris And The Daggers, is worth the wait. It’s some of the best music Scott’s been involved with, and also some of the most personal and emotional music he’s ever written, reflecting the life changes that occurred over those eight years. During that stretch, Scott weathered the loss of friends, treasured the joys of fatherhood, lived life as an Australian and even ate haggis meat – experiences that inform these warm, sweetly melodic and soundly honest songs. Jawbreaker, Smoking Popes, Superchunk, Swearin’ The Hiccup origin story is a rather unlikely one for a breakneck paced, harmony-laden indie band. Dual vocalists Hallie Bulleit (formerly of The Unlovables) and Alex Clute first met when they began playing together in the house band on a late-night television program. The Chris Gethard Show – a club house for suburban dorks, outcasts, punks and nerds – is peppered with brief bursts of kinetic pop-punk songs by Clute and Bulleit’s TV band, The LLC, about such topics as building birdhouses, having weird body parts, and eating sandwiches (to name but a few). They are micro-pop perfection that are, at most, 30 seconds long and as soon as they’re performed live on the show, they disappear forever as quickly as they appeared, never to be performed or heard again. Alex and Hallie were bonded by their common love of, and capacity for creating memorable pop hooks.

“Eventually after playing together and not really having the ability to be too precious or protective over the songs we were writing for the show due to time constraints,” Clute says. “We thought ‘Hey, maybe this can translate into something similar but with more of a lasting impression.’” And thus, with the addition of drummer Piyal Basu, Hiccup was born. Bulleit and Clute began penning songs within the realm of girl-group pop meets buzz saw distorted guitars that the Ramones pioneered, the immediacy of which was later expanded upon by bands such as the Smoking Popes, and the Lookout Records roster. On initial listen, singles like “Lady MacBeth & Miss Havisham” and “Teasin’” have that instant resonance of pop appeal. But there is also a dark and stormy element in the production and approach, that hints at Kevin Shields’ My Bloody Valentine output or some of the more dissonant Belle And Sebastian moments. Imaginary Enemies, Hiccup’s debut full-length effort, was produced by Kyle Gilbride (Waxahatchee, Swearin’, All Dogs), and will be released on Father/Daughter Records on March 24 2017. leasure suck, the third and most fully realized release from The Spirit of the Beehive, finds one of Philadelphia’s most ambitious and captivating psych rock outfit slowly devouring listeners’ brains with sad, beautiful pop melodies buried under the guise of noisy, volatile and unconventionally griping compositions. Over the album’s 36 minutes, the band traverses the ghostly back-roads of indie rock with a wide sonic palette and undeniably hypnotizing results.
T
here’s a certain air of mysteriousness that surrounds The Spirit of the Beehive and its weird, wonderful music. Detached yet fully engaged, the quartet seems to float back-and-forth between fantasy and reality. The songs on pleasure suck evolve deliberately and dissipate quickly, yet linger in the air long after they are gone. Shifting between ambiance and lo-fi pop, with fits of discord, dissonance and distortion in between, the Philly outfit’s attention to detail and mood is impressive. What emerges from the darkness and tumult is a band that is completely engrossing yet impossible to categorize without getting a bit messy. Of course, that’s part of the curious fun of pleasure suck.

While music fans and press were busy catching up on the Turkish legacy of 70s rock and psychedelia, a very active and vibrant underground music scene in Istanbul was developing under the radar. Jakuzi are the latest offspring, and their debut record is monumental. Jakuzi doesn't sound like any other band out there right now. Their debut album Fantezi Müzik is a lo-fi pop masterpiece that feels like it exists out of time and space. When Kutay Soyocak and Taner Yücel started Jakuzi, their aim was to create something different to their previous punk and garage projects, a type of background which has frequently brought out the best in synth-wave bands. Another New Year, and new shapes are forming — if only we are fortunate enough to notice them! As we spin through this world, we are witness to all manner of combinations unfolding before us — familiar arcs and breaking waves alike, upon all of which it is our choice, our chance and our challenge, to possibly ride. Find Me Finding You, the new album from the new organization called the Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble, manages to strike new chords while touching familiar keys in the song of life. From its percolating opening beat, Find Me Finding You locates new systems within the sound-universe of Laetitia Sadier. This in itself isn’t a surprise — Laetitia has relentlessly followed her music through different dynamics and into a variety of dimensions over the course of four solo albums since 2010 (not to forget her three albums with Monade and the long era of Stereolab) — but the nature of the construction here stands distinctly apart from her recent albums. Laetitia was inspired by a mind’s-eye envisaging of geometric forms and their possible permutations. As she sought to replicate the shapes in music, this guided the process of assembly for the album. Part of the freshness of Find Me Finding You comes from working and playing within the Source Ensemble and exploring new sound combinations via a set of youthful and evolving musical relationships. Laetitia recognized the energy of the tracks in their initial form, and sought to preserve their vitality by not retaking too many performances — instead, the rawness in the tracks was retained and refined at the mixing stage, maintaining an edge throughout. When we hear synth lines diving, lifting and drifting, unusual guitar textures, the plucked sound of flat wound bass strings or the bottomless pulsing of bass pedals stepping out of the mix with an exquisite vibrancy, this is the sound of the Source Ensemble. A key to Laetitia’s music is her use of vocal arrangements. Throughout Finding Me Finding You, the shifting accompani-
ment creates space to bring this element gloriously forward. Arranged by Laetitia with Joe Watson and Jeff Parker making string charts that were subsequently transposed to vocal parts for several songs, richly arranged choirs of voices provide depth along with the thrilling presence of extra breath in the sound. Laetitia’s community-politic is well-served by the groups of voices lending support to the machining of the song craft, providing additional uplift to her quintessentially forward-facing viewpoint — as well as massed voices from three different countries sharing space in harmony! Working in collaboration is Laetita’s traditions, and a key to this album’s view on being free together (it is necessary, preferable and right!). The designation of Source Collective implies a new togetherness phase; alongside long-time collaborators Emmanuel Mario and Xavi Munoz, keyboard and flutes parts played by David Thayer (Little Tornados) were essential contributions, as well as further keys, synths and electronics from Phil M FU and several intense guitar sequences from Mason le Long. Chris A Cummings (aka Marker Starling, Laetitia’s favorite composer) graciously wrote “Deep Background” for her. The duet with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor on “Love Captive” (not to mention Rob Mazurek’s distinctive coronet playing!) gives voice to an ideological cornerstone of Find Me Finding You — that, should we be responsible enough to endeavor into a world of basic incomes and open relationships, we would make astonishing strides as a society. These sorts of things can only be done in agreement with others. Expressing great compassion and expectation with startling immediacy, as well as an abiding belief in an underlying unity that permeates and intimately binds all things and beings, Find Me Finding You combines a rigorous process for music-making with a deeply invested mindset, making captivating music that promises many stimulating spins to come!

Xinobi's new album is pretty much an album rooted in the NOW. Its emo electronic music you can dance to. You can say Atmospheric House with Spoken Word, dreamy electronic with a Pop feel, ethereal Techno, dark chill Leftfield fulfilled with uncommon lyrics on the dance music world. “On The Quiet” is a dance floor-focused story about the transition of many electronic musicians from punk rock and skateboarding into house music and about how dance-music can be a field for social conscious awareness. It’s common knowledge that the second album from an artist is his most difficult task. “On The Quiet” proves to be an exception to this idea. After countless successful singles and remixes Xinobi found his own style on his debut album “1975”, released in 2014, and improved that style on this set of songs that now stands a new landmark on his career. “On The Quiet” is a reflex of the path that many contemporary electronic musicians have crossed, starting on punk and developing into diversity while keeping some of the ethics of punk school. One could say this an D.I.Y. record. Xinobi played and self-produced the whole album and even released on Discotexas (a label he co-owns with Moullinex). Friends were invited to sing on some tracks and there’s Ian MacKaye’s (the man behind such important bands as Minor Threat, Fugazi or the Dischord label) voice about skateboarding manners and urban alternative interpretations. The record also features an artwork by Braulio Amado with extensive biographical writings, all the lyrics, interviews with Igor Cavalera (former member of Sepultura and Mixhell) and David Andersson of Punks Jump Up beautifully crafted with fanzine-styled aesthetics.

With its title, Excursions to Cloudland, the travel itinerary designed by Dire Wolves could be mistaken for seeming to promise something of a gentle journey, a breezy, psychedelic semisaunter, held aloft by a Floydian pillow of winds. Dire Wolves have other plans. This is your Captain speaking – your Captain is dead. While the echoes of previous, pioneering excursions may occasionally, faintly bounce off of the walls that make up the circulatory system of Excursions to Cloudland, the blood coursing through its collective veins and organs is a particularly spirited strain, a fully original concoction, manifesting in the sounds of Dire Wolves – a sound that pairs perfectly with quickening pulses and flipped lids. Tracing the bloodline of Dire Wolves may require an exhausting form of archeological exercise, collecting the shards left behind by their ancestral and aesthetic predecessors – organic, barrier-resistant bands like Jackie-O Motherfucker and Kemialliset Ystävät, not to mention Amon Duul, or the previously-referenced Hawkwind. Dire Wolves are indeed a band freed from the constraints of clearly demarcated borders, let alone members; some twenty-plus unique heartbeats have served to animate Dire Wolves over the years, no doubt all contributing something to the indescribable, undeniable span and scope of sound throughout Excursions to Cloudland. The first track on Excursions to Cloudland – “Enter Quietly,” at over twelve minutes, the album’s longest, though not by much – stands as a clear enough expression of the benefits derived from Dire Wolves’ multi-dimensional membership, ineffable though it may be. There’s something in it to remind grey-haired listeners of The Incredible String Band; for less aged ears, it simply sounds incredible. At just over a minute in, we hear the first indication of the presence of Lau Nau, a.k.a. Laura Naukkarinen, whose fine, otherworldly vocals effortlessly wrap like wisteria vines around the yearning violin employed throughout the album, rapidly becoming the Polaris of Dire Wolves’ expansive sky, and ultimately, the defining characteristic of Excursions to Cloudland.

But then, perhaps too much time has already been spent on trying to define the sound of Excursions to Cloudland, rather than merely reveling in the grand, bewitching baying of these Dire Wolves. The sister-songs that follow “Enter Quietly,” “Fogged Out 1” and “Fogged Out 2,” can be experienced as twenty-minute companion pieces, but more importantly, they should simply be experienced – not necessarily stoned, but, yes, beautiful. By the time the album closing “Cerebration Day” emerges from the fog, the songs of Excursions to Cloudland feel like an unbroken line, a vast quest and adventure that’s larger than Dire Wolves themselves, a holy racket that seeks to wake us, rather than occlude us. Arbouretum has been called “the best of the millennial classic rock bands, a guitarfuzzed powerhouse.” The band, founded by guitarist and vocalist Dave Heumann, effortlessly weaves its melodies and guitar solos with the often hypnotic rhythms of bassist Corey Allender and drummer Brian Carey around the deliberate keyboard of Matthew Pierce to lift the vocals. The results are a full sound delivered with a striking sense of intimacy. Throughout their time together, the Baltimore-based band have been praised for their ability to weave elaborate vocal lines, and guitar solos that often unravel into extended improvisation, but never with as much finesse as on Song of the Rose. In less practiced hands, these ideas could easily fall into contrivance, but on Song of the Rose, Arbouretum use these elements to perfect their craft of storytelling in song, both lyrically and sonically. Arbouretum recorded Song of the Rose with Steve Wright at Wrightway Studios. While previous records were recorded in a matter of days, Song of the Rose took weeks. Attention to production details augment their time-tested emphasis on capturing the energy of performance. Song of the Rose is the first time the band has mixed with Kyle Spence at his studios in Athens, GA (Kurt Vile, Luke Roberts, Harvey Milk). At the root of the songs and compositions on Song of the Rose is the concept of balance. As is true for the movements of Tai Chi, of which Dave Heumann is an avid practitioner, each motion both musical and lyrical has an equal but opposite motion, that works together harmoniously. “Woke Up On The Move” pores over nature’s beauty as much as it heeds the warning of humankind’s destructive potential. The variations that result from the constant push and pull throughout Song of the Rose make Arbouretum’s music as arresting as it is thoughtful. The lyrical imagery makes it masterful. Arbouretum’s lyrics explore elements of philosophy, mysticism, redemption, and the implications of human “progress”. Songs are written in poetic form as Heumann, Arbouretum’s lyricist, prefers stories remain abstract and open rather than a more typical storytelling format, all within a more traditional song structure. Titular track “Song of the Rose” completes a trilogy of songs from past records, calling back to “Song of the Nile” and “Song of the Pearl,” which have their roots in examining Taoist and Gnostic mythic traditions. Fittingly “Rose” is also a nod to Heumann’s ancestor Richard Lovelace, a 17th century poet who penned “The Rose.” The driving “Absolution Song,” featuring the albums only instrumental guest appearance by Drums of Life, is a contemplation of the idea of writing and thereby absolving oneself of all wrongdoings, through the creative act, in this case, using poetic imagery. Arbouretum music takes these philosophical ideas and transforms them into a sonic experience that is at once contemplative and emotionally affecting. Whereas Pontiak’s 2014 album INNOCENCE tore through rowdy riffs and melancholic balladry in a neat half hour, it’s immediately clear from the reverb-heavy trip of opener ‘Easy Does It’ that Dialectic of Ignorance is altogether a different beast. Euphorically defying spatial constraint, brothers Jennings, Van and Lain Carney instead opt to guide each song along its own cosmic trajectory: confident in the outcome, but even more excited to enjoy the ride. Bloody-knuckled basslines bring a snarling Desert Session groove to ‘Ignorance Makes Me High’ and ‘Herb Is My Next Door Neighbor’, whilst woozy Gilmour-esque vocal harmonies imbue ‘Hidden Prettiness’ and ‘Youth and Age’ with a psychoacoustic dose of cerebral inertia. Those who have seen the brothers perform live know of their ability to harmonize, but Dialectic of Ignorance is the first album in which this talent is showcased in every song. ‘We Fucked Up’ is a pedal to the metal stoner-psych opus, while ‘Tomorrow Is Forgotten’ burns hot and slow; potent from the first note whilst relentlessly cranking up the intensity. Pontiak grew up and live on farms in rural Virginia. Dialectic of Ignorance’s expansive structures echo the rugged, hazy climbs of this Blue Ridge Mountain setting, but don’t be fooled; this is no mere collection of pastoral instrumental landscapes. Having opened their own brewery in August 2015, the Carney brothers have had the opportunity to reassess their creative process through brewing. The lessons learned from this experimentation have had a formative effect on the both the process underlying and subsequent sound of Dialectic of Ignorance. “There’s a definite dovetail between brewing and music,” explains Pontiak guitarist and lead vocalist Van Carney. “Both are creative processes that are full of immediate possibility. In the studio you face logistical, technical and creative challenges that are constantly evolving; it’s on you as the creator to decide which path you want to take. Brewing is no different.” An expanded awareness of process has emboldened Pontiak’s musical explorations on Dialectic of Ignorance. “There’s beauty and truth and goodness in all hardships, and it takes strength to see that,” Van adds. “We learned that there’s limitless opportunity ahead if you’re ready to pursue it.” Literary influence was also important, with particular inspiration drawn from Karl Ove Knausgård’s sprawling confessional style, and the expressive, highly visual approach mastered by writers such as Bohumil Hrabal and Leo Tolstoy. With post-truth politics implementing lasting change through manufactured narratives, the creative ownership Pontiak display on Dialectic of Ignorance is both elevating and empowering. Still, “it’s not a political album,” Van asserts. “The message we want to get across is the importance of being present in the moment. Maybe everything is fucked. But you can do something about that.” Dialectic of Ignorance was recorded between January and October 2016 in Pontiak’s own ‘Studio A’ in Virginia. “Running the brewery definitely stretched the process out, but that was a good thing,” says Van. “It gave us time to think, mull over things, and throw stuff away when necessary. We’d come in to the brewery early each morning, put on what we’d recorded the previous day, listen to it while we worked, and shoot ideas at each other. It was a meditative, flowing process.”

A Steady Descent into the Soil is the debut LP from St. Catharines, Ontario's Vile Creature. Crafted during winter 2014 and recorded in an abandoned school house in rural Canada, the record acts as a cull of emotions derived from the inherent violence and hatred experienced growing up queer around the millennium, a time much less homo-positive than today's landscape. Three songs of fuzzed-out atmospheric doom are sprawled over nearly 40 minutes, creating a record described as "wonderfully unique" and "undeniably original" by noisey & metalinjection, respectively.

The Reverend Eddie Bones is the esteemed American composer, pianist and instrument builder CooperMoore’s collaboration with the songwriter and artist Ed Pettersen. These two fresh interpretations of gospel songs are both featured in the new Norwegian TV thriller pilot “The Green Jersey” which is directed by Øystein Karlsen, the cult director of Dag, Lilliehammer, and was recently broadcast twice in Norway. Pressed on two 180g vinyl discs with a heavyweight gatefold sleeve and full colour inner bags. Pioneering English traditional folk powerhouse, Eliza Carthy, first assembled the Wayward Band in 2013 in order to explore and celebrate her long and varied career in folk music; 'the last truly underground music scene'. To do this Eliza put together a team of hugely talented people from across the UK, and set out on the road to promote her 'Best Of' compilation, 'Wayward Daughter,' which coincided with a biography of the same name. Since then, the band has become a festival favourite, and Eliza has been awarded the MBE for services to folk music. Eliza and the Wayward Band loved playing together so much it seemed natural and inevitable, as well as characteristically ambitious, that this 12-piece would set about recording an album. Early in 2016 they did just that. 'Big Machine' is the result and the renowned Real World and Rockfield Studios are where it all happened. 'Big Machine', produced by Jim Sutherland, will be released by Topic Records in February 2017. The material represents a healthy slice of everything good that is happening in traditional music now, across a sparkling spectrum of sound. The album features three contemporary songs; Eliza's own 'You Know Me' about the migrant crisis and notions of hospitality (featuring MC Dizraeli), a powerful cover of Ewan Maccoll's Radio Ballad 'The Fitter's Song' (at the behest of Peggy Seeger - and the song which inspired the album title) and an affectionate reworking of 'Hug You Like a Mountain' (Rory MacLeod), re-imagined here as a duet with Teddy Thompson. There are also several examples of the Broadside ballad collections housed in Chetham's Library in Manchester given a new twist with music by Eliza and the band. This follows an acclaimed programme Eliza presented for Radio 4 about the Manchester Ballads last year, covering everything from songs about and caused by domestic abuse ('Devil in the Woman,' 'Fade and Fall (Love Not)'), to love of the seafaring life ('The Sea'). Added to that a couple of searing instrumentals, a song about dying from custard poisoning and a heartbreaking traditional ballad 'I Wish that the Wars were all Over' (performed live with the band onstage in Real World Studios' Studio One and featuring Irish superstar Damien Dempsey), and you begin to get the picture. A very Big picture, a Big Machine firing on all cylinders. WEBLINKS addis 1988 is the document of a moment in time when mulatu astatke was not yet the global ethiojazz superstar he is today, but a change was gonna come for him, and for the whole world. in ethiopia, the derg had started to tumble and fall; europe saw the wall between east and West gain more and more holes until it came down; Southern Africa witnessed Apartheid taking its final lap before Nelson Mandela was finally set free. With Ofra Haza‘s Yeminite Songs and Mory Kanté’s ‘Yéké Yéké’ high on the international charts, music of the wider world finally entered the house of Western pop, giving high hopes and deep inspirations for many musicians who were previously excluded . Fuelled by Mulatu Astatke as artistic director, composer, arranger and collaborating musician, Ethio Stars and Tukul Band‘s Addis 1988 recordings vibrantly sustain the innocence of these musical originators, yet hold up to modern standards with timeless aplomb. The album also helps to fill a gap: the period when Mulatu and his music were largely forgotten outside of his homeland. First released in 1992, available for CD only and out of print for many years, Addis 1988 is now remastered and available as limited edition on vinyl for the first time, a stunning 180 grams for audiophiles and aficionados. When the Global Music Centre Helsinki Mobile came to Addis Ababa in 1988 to record local heroes Ethio Stars and Tukul Band, the cradle of humanity in the Horn of Africa was still in the grasp of the restraints that the Mengistu regime had put on its people to secure its dictatorial control. It would be another three years until the guerrilla forces would chase the oppressors out of the capital. Until then, and certainly during the time that Addis 1988 was recorded, the cultural climate in Ethiopia had, to a large extent, been lacking and full of restrictions. Lyrics were subject to extensive governmental censorship. Public nightlife – which would otherwise be feeding artistic exchange among locals and the rare international visitor – was subject to the tight curfews and was thus very limited, if not outright extinct. The result of such restrictions was an often heavy reliance on the local traditions and heritage and instrumental-only styles of music that didn’t need to rely on lyrics at all. Addis 1988 sheds a light on both of these historical phenomena. Tukul Band, for one, predominantly withdrew into traditional krar music – the six string bowl-lyre that‘s said to be the devil‘s creation for mankind to accompany their earthly pleasures. Ethio Stars, on the other hand, took to domestic exile on the hotel circuit where they – quite in contrast to Tukul Band and their scene – absorbed all the soul, reggae and rock from outside Ethiopia that they could get their hands on, interlaced them with their Amharic love songs – known as Fikir – and sent the hybrid back out into the world. Since this time, the world has caught up to the sound of Ethiojazz in general, and to the mastermind pulling strings in the background of both bands, Mulatu Astatke, in particular. On Addis 1988, ‘the father of Ethiojazz’ contributes compositions and arrangements for Ethio Stars‘ set, as well as sensitively programming one of the first fullydeveloped drum machines of the time; then takes the musical direction of Tukul Band and their modern approach to traditional Ethiopian music, contributing compositions

This record is frolicking and fun, serious and steadfast. Miya Masaoka wrote a delicate, drone-based work built on sustained harmonics and microtonal tunings. JG Thirlwell (Foteus, Steroid Maximus, Venture Brothers, Archer) created a work that constantly careens from lyricism to ferocity, from precision to frenetic abandon.

Despite the trio formation and the individual players’ backgrounds with jazz, the GRID sound takes the plunge toward the darker, heavier, and more psychedelic realms of improvised music. While undoubtedly harnessing the clamorous spirit of free jazz, the trio ventures beyond its acoustic borders, cleverly implementing electronic processing as well as dirge-like tempos that draw upon the slow-burning qualities of Doom and Sludge for inspiration. The four pieces that make up the album cover plenty of sonic territory and are ripe with expressive gesture, but are unified by the resulting singularity of atmosphere they conjure. Dahl’s extra-heavy bass guitar often marinates in the lower registers, creating a thick undergrowth of growling low end frequencies that anchor the pieces in a doom-like ambiance. Sliding up and down the fret from note to note creates a swaying imbalance that only amplifies the queasy, slow-motion tempos. Nelson’s saxophone, in conjunction with electronic effects processing, unleashes a multitude of refreshingly twisted new sounds, dynamics, and textures from the horn. Overdriven feedback is used to add a deeply fried sustain to the notes, giving them a Hendrix-like soulfulness and urgency. Squeals and squelches occasionally emerge from the web of filtering, reminding the listener that they are in fact hearing saxophone, not guitar. Podgurski’s loose, collapsing drumming style fills the nooks and crevices left behind by Dahl and Nelson’s destructive dissonance, stirring the pot and propelling the music forward. His painterly attack hits in all the right places, reinforcing tempos but also dancing around them, while adding an acoustic juxtaposition that gives dimension to each piece. Upon listening, there’s no denying that these musicians are deeply rooted in the craft of improvisation - they bring not only experience, but a high level of understanding to their work as well. What makes GRID unique however, is their ability to play with dirtier, noisier, and heavier textures, but with the sensitivity of a seasoned improviser. There is an undeniable physicality to GRID’s sound, as all of the sounds are related to the actual touch of the instrument. Although electronics are utilized, they embellish this physical playing, rather than dictate it. Nelson, Dahl, and Podgurski place individual expression in the back seat in favor of a cohesive vision that relies as much on mood and aura as it does technical chops. Recorded live to two inch tape at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn, the cavernous quality of the recording and signature mastering from Weasel Walter augment an undercurrent of grit and dread. Overall, the album has an essence of eternal void, as if the music exists in a vacuum of space that could go on infinitely in either direction. As a performer, Bertucci has worked primarily with amplified woodwind instruments, creating enigmatic electro-acoustic soundscapes with bass clarinet in conjunction with electronic processing. Her latest release on NNA, however, explores her work as a composer, which investigates extended acoustic resonance on classical instruments and their potential to powerfully occupy physical space. The two sides of this cassette contain two different pieces that exist around a common concept - the live performance of extended technique on stringed instruments, and the otherworldly way that the resulting sound exists in the space in which it is created. Drawing upon the natural acoustics of ISSUE Project Room’s 22 Boerum Place theater, “The Cepheid Variations” examines the movement of sound in space through the use of dissonance, wide dynamic fluctuations, and particular sonic textures. Beginning with a pensive, ghostly landscape, the viola (performed by Jeanann Dara) and cello (performed by Leila Bordreuil) explore glassy, fragile frequencies to their most powerful capability. A variety of bowing techniques are utilized by the performers, from slow, meandering pulses to frenetic scraping. Each subtlety in the physical manipulation of the instrument reveals new variations to the overall tension of the piece. The introduction of tape collage (performed by Bertucci herself) expands and adds dimension, introducing new frequencies into the sound field that cleverly juxtaposes the live instrumentation with pre-recorded sonic material. The second piece, “Double Bass Crossfade”, positions two double bassists (James Ilgenfritz and Sean Ali) at opposite corners of the Knockdown Center’s 50,000 square foot main room. The performers move slowly across the room, meet in the center, and then cross to each other’s original starting positions over the course of the piece. It begins with the hypnotic, gentle bowing of the bass in its upper registers, but gains intensity as the piece progresses, finding its most powerful moments with a loud, rumbling low end that showcases the incredible acoustic power of the double bass. Tremendous depth is achieved through the layering of contrasting harmonics from each player, as the two performers engage with each other in focused technique, listening intently and creating a symbiosis through sound. Duality is the emphasis of this piece - in the musicians, their physical positioning, and their location in the stereo field. But as they eventually reach the lower ends of the register, the sounds they produce blend and fuse together into one raucous, engulfing whole. The two pieces on this cassette demonstrate the incredible amount of dynamic diversity that can be achieved by the phenomenon of vibrating metallic strings. Resonance and frequency are thoroughly explored with thought, care, and dedication. These works reveal a fresh voice in new music, while also championing the pioneers of the 20th century avant-garde - recalling the tonal curiosity of Ligeti, the emotional power and sensitivity of Arvo Part, the strident minimalism of Tony Conrad, and the unflinching violence of George Crumb. Bertucci exhibits a keen and perceptive ear for nuanced acoustic sound, and a passion for focused musical investigation is made evident through her compositions. Stepping aside from the role of performer, ‘All That Is Solid Melts Into Air’ shows us a different side of Bertucci’s repertoire - that of the writer and composer. This album reinforces her talents not only as a player, but as an imaginative explorer of music’s more cerebral and metaphysical outer limits.

This is a previously unreleased mono recording of Modes and Blues from the Tubby Hayes Quintet’s weekly Ronnie Scott’s residency on 8th February 1964. Regarded as one of the masterworks of British modern jazz, Modes and Blues shows the Quintet at the very height of its powers, channelling the new musical flavours and inspiration that Tubby Hayes had absorbed from the cutting edge of jazz and the new directions of John Coltrane. Recorded with Hayes’ approval by Les Tomkins on his Ferrograph tape recorder, this is one of the most engrossing of all his stretch-out epics. Hayes digs in deep with marathon and breathtaking soloing, trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar delivers his characteristically lyrical improvisation, and there’s dynamic interplay and drive from the great Terry Shannon, Freddy Logan and Allan Ganley rhythm section. The Quintet had barely a few months left to run at the time of this performance, splitting in August 1964, fearing its music had atrophied into self-parody. Modes and Blues is among its many triumphs, a performance that shows how high the band had set the aspirational bar for British modernism, and, as such, is as much a cultural document as a musical souvenir. What music would Erik Satie be making in 2017? And if you were organizing a record store, where would you file his new records? Should he be in Classical with Mozart and company? Or would you place his work alongside Philip Glass, Eno, the Masters Musicians of Joujouka, Arthur Russell and Aphex Twin’s Drukqz? And what would you call that section? All these questions are relevant when talking about the immensely talented Kelly Moran. A strikingly original keyboardist, composer, and electro-acoustic sound producer living in New York City, Moran is releasing her new album through Telegraph Harp. A small masterpiece, Bloodroot is a series of compositions for prepared piano, with and without electronics. Blurring distinctions between acoustic music and electronic music, Bloodroot also unearths the venerable prepared piano as a proto-avant-garde ancestor of today’s electronic music, splitting off shards of shimmering bell and bow tones that lay hidden as latent possibilities within the strings. Moran takes the prepared piano on an evocative journey that calls up the ghosts of a supernatural gamelan and makes them dance in a land neighboring John Cage’s imaginary landscapes. She turns the instrument inside out, celebrating the piano (and sound itself) down to the cellular level. “For Bloodroot,” Moran explains, “I sampled plucked and ebow piano strings and mapped them to MIDI controllers so I could trigger the samples and play them on a keyboard.” Using custom digital instruments she has created from her own recorded samples, and her pieces maintain a sonic identity that is entirely her own. Bloodroot is an exploration of timbres within the prepared piano, coupled with the digital processing of extended piano techniques. Hiding among these shimmering pieces, however, one also finds an unexpected sonic influence: Metal. “I started getting into various iterations of Black Metal in graduate school,” she recently told an interviewer for Nine Circles, “and it really amazed me how much the genre shared in common with certain kinds of minimalist music. I had been doing a lot of theory analysis on pieces by John Adams, Steve Reich, and Philip Glass, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of their music when I’d listen to Black Metal. The steady pulse, adherence to tonality, and overlapping patterns… I truly think if you orchestrated a band like Mgla for piano, it would sound a lot like Steve Reich. I often think about what the scores would look like if someone transcribed bands like Burzum, Krallice, or Drudkh; they would probably look very post-minimalist.” And to that point: Moran’s album Bloodroot also happens to be mastered by seminal Metal producer and Krallice/Gorguts/Dysrhythmia guitarist, Colin Marston. As a collaborator, in recent years she has performed as a bassist in Weasel Walter’s no-wave outfit Cellular Chaos, and keyboardist for avant-rock band Voice Coils. Other recent collaborations include projects with Toby Driver (Kayo Dot), Nicholas McMaster (Krallice, Geryon), Charlie Looker (Extra Life, Psalm Zero), and Joshua Strawn (Azar Swan, Vaura). An accomplished pianist in her own right, Moran has given numerous recitals of contemporary repertoire and specializes in works that employ extended techniques and a prepared piano. She also works as a piano accompanist at Barnard College and the Martha Graham School for Contemporary Dance.
Following Kelly Moran’s self-releases, Telegraph Harp is thrilled to bring out her first in wider distribution and LP/CD formats. The LP edition of Bloodroot features a special insert, a newsprint edition of all 11 piano scores. The LP is an audiophile pressing by QRP.

This is Happiness of Living: the latest musical transmission from On Fillmore, the long-running duo of percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco) and bassist Darin Gray (Tweedy). Carved from an ecstatic multi-day session in Rio de Janeiro, these 11 new tracks, which make up their fourth studio album, move effortlessly between pools of celestial vocals, deep cosmic pockets and occasional pop tunes, to create a glowing mood unlike any previous dispatch from On Fillmore. Sculpted from eight hours of sessions made with old and new comrade musicians, including esteemed producer Kassin (Caetano Veloso, Arto Lindsay), On Fillmore has invited others into their deepest creative space for the first time with Happiness of Living. Emerging from something deeper than improvisation, the sessions unfolded in a spirit of openness: like the analog tape loops borrowed from an installation by Sao Paulo artist, Chiara Banfi; or the voice of Brazilian-American singer-songwriter Gabriela Riley; the otherworldly percussion of Mauro Refosco (Atoms for Peace, Red Hot Chili Peppers); or even the words sang by Guillereme Valerio on “Jornada Inteira”, who is the brother of their Sao Paulo promoter. The synchronicity of those recordings is evident upon listening to Happiness of Living, from the first touch of thumb piano (kalimba) on album opener, “Pintado.” First visiting Brazil to perform at the 2005 Perc Pan Festival in Salvador and Rio, On Fillmore had what they describe as “a musically life-changing experience.” They arrived, laden with mini-discs and effects pedals, to play music from their thennew album Sleeps With Fishes (Quakebasket, 2004), but it was while watching a performance by +2 collective (Domenico, Moreno, Kassin) that something shifted. A friendship with those musicians took root and grew into an ensemble performance later that year at Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago which, though unrehearsed, remains one of the duo’s favorite shows. It opened the door for what continued to grow into Extended Vacation (Dead Oceans, 2009), and eventually becomes fully formed in Happiness of Living. On Fillmore have always embodied a collaborative spirit, most recently serving as the rhythm section for William Tyler’s acclaimed Modern Country (Merge, 2016). On Fillmore formed in 1999 on a plane ride home from performing in London with Jim O’Rourke, and met a few years before while working on O’Rourke’s Eureka (Drag City, 1998). On Fillmore has since remained a band without a geographical home: Gray based in St. Louis and Kotche in Chicago (or wherever Wilco’s currently at). Since joining Wilco in early 2001, Kotche has become one of the most acclaimed and in-demand percussionists in the world, occupying a musical space at the intersection
of pop and experimental music, orbiting within the worlds of classical commissions as well as rock and roll amphitheaters. Gray has worked with a range of underground music heroes, including Loren Connors, Chris Corsano, and Rob Mazurek, in addition to serving as bassist in Tweedy, with Wilco’s frontman, Jeff Tweedy, and his son Spencer.In cultivating their long-term friendship and musical partnership, Kotche and Gray’s stillunfolding On Fillmore discography showcases a process of exploration that is consistently pushing both musicians beyond the traditional divisions of labor in a bass/percussion duo. After discovering a new musical place with Extended Vacation in 2009, On Fillmore found themselves with the longing to transform their ongoing musical conversation to a wider specter of possible landscapes.Neither jazz nor Brazilian, not exotica, not free music, nor anything else. If anything, Happiness of Living has On Fillmore in uncharted land. Wayne Snow – Freedom TV LP – TARTALB007 – March 24. 2017 After two incredible EPs, W ayne Snow — the Nigerian-born, Berlin-based vocalist and songwriter — now presents his debut album on Tartelet Records. Freedom TV is the natural sequel to the Max Graef-produced tasters Red Runner (2014) and Rosie (2015); a project marinated in Afro-Caribbean, soulful grooves and topped by W ayne’s effortless falsetto acrobatics. As the title suggests, Freedom TV is an album with themes of liberty, struggle and creative identity pumping through its veins. Within ten tracks, Snow fluently meanders between musical styles: from low-tempo soothers like album opener “Cooler” and “Fall” to the syncopated bruk of “The Rhythm” and cosmic funk escapades found on “Nothing Wrong”. Production comes from three varied and solid sources. The tag-team between Snow and fellow Berliner, Max Graef — which started on Graef’s 2014 debut Rivers of the Red Planet — is in full effect. The result is six tracks (“Cooler”, “Still In The Shell”, “Drunk”, “Red Runner”,
“Rosie” & “Fall”) anchored by Graef’s now-signature brew of warm-to-the-touch boom-bap, soul, jazz and house. Elsewhere, trips to see the French capital and Neue Grafik yielded three stormers: “The Rhythm”, “Freedom R.I.P” and “Nothing But The Best”. Naples-formed, Berlin-based duo Nu Guinea also lend a hand on “Nothing Wrong”, an uptempo jam which will receive remix treatment from Francis Inferno Orchestra as well as the pair themselves. The works of criminally overlooked, Zimbabwean guerilla fighter-poet, Freedom Nyamubaya (✝1958-2015), bind everything together. It’s her verses, which occupy the end of soul-searching, Peven Everett-esque joint “Freedom R.I.P” and provide a regular referential touchpoint. More than anything, Freedom TV is the soundtrack for anyone seeking a wholesome exploration of groove. Smooth and contagiously danceable at points, Wayne Snow has arrived in album territory with an assured cool.

Various Artists – Jazzanova The Remixes 2006-‐2016 ; CD, 2xLP – SK330CD, SK330LP This release heralds the start of the 20th anniversary of Jazzanova as internationally renowned remixers. That is to say, it was in the summer of 1997 when the very first remix by Jazzanova was released, the one for United Future Organization's „Friends... We'll Be“ on Gilles Peterson's founded label Talkin’ Loud. Said remix can be found on the first edition of the by now accumulated to a trilogy compilation series. When the first part covers the early, yeasty years from 1997 to 2000, the second episode pays tribute to the years from 2002 to 2005 and the third sequel takes the last few years, the lapse of time from 2006 to 2016 to task. This decade as well was – as you can hear strongly by listening to this long player – a very prosperous, inspiring productive period for Jazzanova. How fast time flies is displayed by these nine selected tracks from the last ten years. All of them still sound as if they have been released just yesterday. Starting with the remix of “Listen To The Drums” by Outlines, which evolved into a worldwide club hit over the years, also thanks to the edit by Dixon. Most remarkably this work is already ten years old! The remixes of Furry Phreaks' „All Over The World“ and Heritage Orchestra's „Skybreaks“ also doesn't really sound like two tunes from 2007.
Au contraire, this is the trademark sound of Jazzanova carving itself genre-spanning into eternity. Or who would dare to not declare the 2009 remix for Atjazz' „Parallels“ as an modern day dance floor classic? And with the reworks of tracks by Hugh Masekela („Stimela“) and Joe Bataan („Ordinary Guy“) we have two actual funk/soul evergreens featured on this compilation's wonderful third edition. A must is obviously the inclusion of the remix for “Believer” by Paul Randolph from 2007. It was this remix that was somehow the start of longterm relationship that culminated in Paul becoming the steady guest singer of Jazzanova and with whom they’re touring worldwide since 2009. To top „Jazzanova – The Remixes 2006-2016“ off there's the rework of the forgotten, but recently re-issued by Notes On A Journey Spinning Motion's “Naze”. And as a bonus track you are treated with a not yet released remix of “Dimentica Domani“ by young, Italian singer-songwriter Malika Ayane. These are nine state-of-the-art remixes carrying Jazzanova's name deep into the next decade. Back to the future. Currently Jazzanova is focussing on finishing their third longplayer for 2017.
