Lasers through tracing paper, orange tone oscillations, cable access hangover, a K-tel dream sequence, a haunted vision mixer, station wagon-core, straight to video, something in the fog, fluff on the needle, chromakey constellations, a hovercraft on the fret board, faxing a car alarm, a Morse code pep talk, etch a sketch jacknife, a daily Haley’s comet, light sound colour motion, a holiday from yourself, Ceefax taking Oracle, second sight summer camp, 360 degree tunnel vision, Chinese whispers by post, the opposite of hula hooping, the geometry of ideas, a teleprompter for your dreams, carry the ten, pathways in patchwork. Last album Rolling Blackouts became a natural end chapter for The Go! Team with members splintering off into different musical projects, get married, teach, experience real life. Bandleader Parton took the opportunity to return to the working methods he’d used at the origins of the band – crate digging, trying to nail a feeling, writing and recording the album by himself. Unlike debut album ‘Thunder, Lightning, Strike’ though, The Scene Between is an album about singing - about pushing the melodic side of The Go! Team sound. Parton elaborates “I wanted to make an album driven by melody and song writing because catchiness is the hardest thing you can do. Brill Building hooks but permeated with a kind of wobbly VHS feel”. Parton had four rules before starting: melody would guide the song, samples would be treated as an instrument rather than a basis for the song, the production would vary across the song like flipping the dial on a radio and the singers must all be people he’d never previously heard of. Matching the song to the right voice wherever that voice was in the World, an outreach programme for bedroomcore DIY artists. The Scene Between, begun as a studio only project with the live version of The Go! Team still on hibernation, sees Parton nail the feelings like never before.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE KINTSUGI

bark152 / 2xLP+CD

STREET DATE: MARCH 31, 2015 KINTSUGI – which follows 2011’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated CODES AND KEYS – marks Death Cab for Cutie’s first new album since the departure last year of founding guitarist/keyboardist/producer Chris Walla, who recorded the album with the band before announcing his departure. Recorded in Los Angeles with Rich Costey (Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Interpol) behind the board, the album takes its title from the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum, highlighting cracks rather than hiding them. As such, kintsugi represents a compassionate aesthetic philosophy in which damage and wear are embraced as part of an object’s history. “Considering what we were going through internally, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about, it had a great deal of resonance for us – the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty,” says bassist Nick Harmer, who suggested the name to singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard and drummer Jason McGerr. “Philosophically, spiritually, emotionally, it seems perfect for this group of songs.”

GENRE : ROCK FILE UNDER: “L” Lightning Bolt RELEASE DATE : March 24, 2015 NO EXPORT Over the course of its two-decade existence, Lightning Bolt has revolutionized underground rock in immeasurable ways. The duo broke the barrier between stage and audience by setting themselves up on the floor in the midst of the crowd. Their momentous live performances and the mania they inspired paved the way for similar tactics used by Dan Deacon and literally hundreds of others. Similarly, the band’s recordings have always been chaotic, roaring, blown out documents that sound like they could destroy even the toughest set of speakers. Fantasy Empire, Lightning Bolt’s sixth album and first in five years, is a fresh take from a band intent on pushing themselves musically and sonically while maintaining the aesthetic that has defined not only them, but an entire generation of noisemakers. It marks many firsts, most notably their first recordings made using hi-fi recording equipment at the famed Machines With Magnets, and their first album for Thrill Jockey. More than any previous album, Fantasy Empire sounds like drummer Brian Chippendale and bassist Brian Gibson are playing just a few feet away, using the clarity afforded by the studio to amplify the intensity they project. Every frantic drum hit, every fuzzed-out riff, sounds more present and tangible than ever before. Fantasy Empire is ferocious, consuming, and is a more accurate translation of their live experience. It also shows Lightning Bolt embracing new ways to make their music even stranger. More than any previous record, Chippendale and Gibson make use of live loops and complete separation of the instruments during recording to maximize the sonic pandemonium and power. Gibson worked with Machines very carefully to get a clear yet still distorted and intense bass sound, allowing listeners to truly absorb the detail and dynamic range he displays, from the heaviest thud to the subtle melodic embellishments. Some of these songs have been in the band’s live repertoire since as early as 2010, and have been refined in front of audiences for maximum impact. This is heavy, turbulent music, but it is executed with the precision of musicians that have spent years learning how to create impactful noise through the use of dynamics, melody, and rhythm.

“The live feel of previous albums remains, but it’s as if they converted that vibe to 3D. The hi-res detail, especially in the fiery repetitions of Gibson’s bass, is as bracing as a face-slap. And the duo’s energy is so tangible you can practically see their sweat dripping. Even Chippendale’s trademark cover art has been made over, with his previous neon pastiches replaced by a darker swirl.” - Pitchfork

GENRE : METAL / ROCK FILE UNDER: “L” Liturgy RELEASE DATE : March 24, 2015 NO EXPORT

Liturgy is a Brooklyn-based, self-styled “Transcendental Black Metal” band whose yearning, energetic music exists in an uncanny space between avant rock, black metal, fine art and shamanic ritual. Led by songwriter and conceptual architect Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, who is joined by guitarist Bernard Gann, bassist Tyler Dusenbury and drummer Greg Fox, the band exists as a 21st century total work of art (gesamtkunstwerk): activating divine potencies by means of music and culture even as it underscores the contradictions inherent in such a project during the internet era. Their third full length, The Ark Work, is a quantum leap forward, a radical change in sound that paradoxically sounds more like Liturgy than ever. The album hums and churns with Hunt-Hendrix’s inventive arrangements - drenched with glockenspiels, bagpipes, strings, ritual chanting, and MIDI horns. It supplements its metal energy with motifs from unlikely, disparate genres; cross-fertilizing hardstyle beats, occult-oriented rap, and the glitched re-sampling of IDM with structures from Medieval sacred music, Romantic classical music, and minimalism. The result is a rich, seething cyber-fantasia that is improbably listenable, conveying the disarming, authentic emotion that is Liturgy’s hallmark - a blend of startling invention, high caliber musicianship, raw energy, and profound, cosmic sadness. The result is the first true sonic realization of Transcendental Black Metal: a musically cohesive alchemical fusion, an artistically reflexive work of theandery, and a mind-bending album that is as original as it is beautiful.

GENRE : ROCK / EXPERIMENTAL FILE UNDER: “O” Oneida “P” People of the North RELEASE DATE : March 24, 2015

NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, AUSTRALIA, CANADA EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN As People of the North, Oneida vets Bobby Matador (organ) and Kid Millions (drums) create cosmic improvised music performed with the intensity of a rock band. Their music is loud and distorted, anarchic to its core and imbued with a devotional spirit. The band’s new album, Era of Manifestations, is its most intense statement of purpose, and documents their impressive tonal and rhythmic interplay. The music oscillates between passages of extreme discord and stretches of seemingly spontaneous cohesion, the latter an indication of how intuitive their communication has become after 25 years of playing together. The album features Shahin Motia of Oneida on guitar and significant low-end contributions from Richard Hoffman of Sightings. Era of Manifestations is improvised music with bite, uncompromising and euphoric. Several song titles on Era of Manifestations come from the Shakers, named thusly by Kid Millions, and the album’s title comes from a period in Shaker history in the mid 1800s when Shakerism underwent a period of spiritual reawakening. This period was marked by a preponderance of “revelations,” in which young members of the church were divinely given incredible bursts of spontaneous creative energy. The duality of those revelatory moments and the Shakers’ principles of simplicity and utility are alive and well in People of the North’s music. The album was created from a five-hour session of improvisations recorded at Seizures Palace in Brooklyn. Despite the at times overwhelming energy and sound produced by the group, it is imbued with simplicity produced by a laser-like focus, four minds working towards one ecstatic goal. The musicianship on display, the devotion to their craft, is stunning. Their range as musicians continues to amaze, as does their seemingly limitless capacity for innovation and individuality.

I Am All Your Own will wrap you in serenity but is aware that any second now you may escape. Music of a sweet morning, and unforgettable.” - Thurston Moore, London “a pristine bit of late-fall melancholy, all traipsing acoustics and droning organ... an ecstatic and strange haze, like the last night of a hot summer’s lost weekend” - Pitchfork

Ilyas Ahmedʼs songs exist in a sublime moment of suspended animation, calmly dwelling in between modes of music making both timeless and contemporary – deeply imbued with stillness and peace. On I Am All Your Own, his first album in three years, Ahmed employs strategies gleaned from experimental and ambient musicians, such as Lawrence English and Fripp & Eno, and applies them to song-based guitar music. Building slowly and purposefully, each individual track adds to the albumʼs overall, scrupulously-forged contour. His most direct work, Ahmed’s voice is brought to the fore and unobscured. Like the best work of his friend and collaborator Liz Harris (Grouper), as well as classic touchstones such as the Velvet Undergroundʼs self-titled third album and David Crosbyʼs “If I Could Only Remember My Name,” Ahmed’s latest is sentimental and emotive, while remaining hushed and understated. I Am All Your Own is a record for late nights and early mornings, those times spent in solitude and reflection. Written and recorded entirely on 12-string and electric guitars, I Am All Your Own was recorded using a 4-track cassette recorder with few overdubs and mixed to ¼ inch tape, exuding intimacy and homespun atmosphere. An impressive balance lies between the lush atmospherics he conjures and the sparse arrangements of the songs themselves. As the LP unfolds, a narrative also begins to take shape: the protagonists begin their day peacefully after a long night, they come to a realization that the events of the previous night will change their life forever, and eventually dissolve into a states of regret and eventually acceptance. The guitar-based tracks are interspersed with two untitled interludes of heavy drone and celestial drift – a reminder of Ahmedʼs days as a key, and prolific, figure in the international experimental underground of the past decade. However, even these emanate a clarity that is new to Ahmedʼs work, and which makes I Am All Your Own seem like the opening of a new chapter of his career. Born in Pakistan, Ahmed moved to America at a young age and wandered throughout his teenage years, eventually settling in his current home of Portland, OR. The songs on I Am All Your Own were thoroughly tested in front of live audiences in the Pacific Northwest and at the venerable Hopscotch Festival in North Carolina before being laid to tape in Portland, then mixed at Old Standard Sound. Concurrently with writing and recording I Am All Your Own, Ahmed has been working with Jonathan Seilaff and Matt Carlson of Golden Retriever on a new project called Dreamboat. Ahmed will tour extensively behind I Am All Your Own, a rare treat indeed.

DARREN HANLON

WHERE DID YOU COME FROM? RELEASE DATE: MARCH 24, 2015

The story of Darren Hanlon’s first album in five years, Where Did You Come From?, spans two continents and a whole lot of miles traveled, resulting in his most resplendent musical effort yet—the songs reaching new levels of maturity without ever losing his trademark lyrical charm and twinkling eye. Making it involved an unplanned and sometimes perilous lope through the American South, through various cities, towns and recording studios. He recorded in one-off sessions in Nashville, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, New Orleans and Clarksdale, Mississippi, collaborating with an array of musicians and other characters he met along the way. “When I hopped off the Amtrak, I just walked around and met buskers, tap-dancers, preachers, drunks and drug dealers, all of whom had something worth learning about,” Hanlon says. “I started having compulsive notions that whoever I met should somehow contribute to the album. Let fate play into it. One guy tried to break into a car I was sitting in and even he ended up playing bass on a song.” To hear the analogue richness and singular vision resulting in the collection of songs that make Where Did You Come From? belies the accidental nature of its process. It’s a cohesive, hopeful and vibrant testament to the joys of travel, the tyranny of distance and the vagaries of love and fate.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Follow up to 2010’s critically acclaimed I Will Love You At All • Recorded at The Living Room (New Orleans, LA), Electraphonic Studios (Memphis, TN), Bomb Shelter Studios (Nashville, TN), WROX (Clarksdale, MS) and Fame Studios (Muscle Shoals, AL) • Instrumentalists include Spooner Oldham (Bob Dylan, Neil Young etc), Howard Grimes (Al Green) and David Hood (Paul Simon, Etta James etc) • Spring 2015 U.S. tour planned • Double LP TRACK LISTING 1. This is “Modern Grunge Fuzz Pop with 60’s aura”. On “Fluff” you can hear the deeply-solid effects of the grunge genre and mid-90’s ‘alternative music’ in a sonic gestalt. Exhibiting characteristics of fairly recent genres, as well as some classics that surrounded him during his youth, the album breaks barriers of seemingly comfortable, unthreatening music cultivating a physical embodiment of Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, latter Beatles and even Brian Wilson! Buffalo Killers continue their successful run and now, it’s not running alone. “Fluff” is the start of something great.

With INSIDE OUT YOUR MIND the Loons have created their most compelling and original album to date. Produced by the band’s Mike Kamoo, the album features 11 diverse original compositions, ranging from the short, sharp, infectious rocker “Siren City” to the towering psychedelic epic “As the Raven Flies” which echoes the vibe the Pretty Things’ SF Sorrow album with its soaring vocal harmonies, backwards guitar, and whirring Mellotron interludes. It’s an album of artful contrasts, where torrid garage rock screamers like “My Desolation” and “I Don’t Live There Anymore” rub up against haunting, West Coast-flavored pieces like “Moon and Tide” and “Head in the Clouds,” with its four-piece string arrangement, and the stark, introspective acoustic number “Silence.” The Loons have been playing their smart, inventive brand of psychotic beat music for almost twenty years. Lead singer is Mike Stax of Ugly Things Magazine, Anja Stax plays bass, Marc Schroeder and Chris Marsteller are the guitarists, and Mike Kamoo is their drummer and producer. Shindig Magazine described them as “a perfect pairing of Love-influenced garage-psych and British underground in the mould of the Pretty Things, played with preternatural style and ability.”

A1 – Um Ano A2 - Apocalipsiii B1 – Tio Kiala B2 – De Leve

$15.99 BOX LOT = 25

STREET DATE: 3 /24 / 2015 2013's "O Meu Estilo" produced shock waves felt long after the EP sold out. It was charted by Thom Yorke and praised by well known publications such as Spin, Fact, Vice or The Quietus. And so Rogério Brandão spent the best part of 2014 touring Europe, including two of the Continent's biggest festivals: Sónar in Catalunya and Rosklide in Denmark. "A lo-fi, pressure cooked fusion of impossible rhythms, written for unborn dancers pulling shapes that don’t exist yet." (Fact, late 2013) No wonder it took a while to complete a second EP. "Um Ano" ("One Year") seems to pay tribute to a fantastic year and it picks up on the trademark Nigga Fox dissonance. It bounces all over the place in dramatic style; "Apocalipsii" starts as apparently straight techno but it's clear after a while that it is no such thing. A layer of bleepy weirdness is driven by martial snares. Bleeps then turn into strings and then into fake horns. Rogério shows the table his amazing set of cards; But this time the Angolan producer delivers even more fire. Check out "Tio Kiala", a mammoth bullet-train headed for Rave Central, staying on track despite all the contortionist twists and turns; "De Leve" kind of contradicts its title ("softly") with heavy, widescreen, concert hall percussion below a mournful, elastic, string sound. Slow and epic. > Limited first pressing > Individually hand-painted sleeves > Follow-up to the hugely popular and sold out “O Meu Estilo” EP in 2013

Artist: LoneLady Title: Hinterland 3.24.2015

Overview

WARPLP245/CD245

“One of the records of the year ” - BBC Music LoneLady (aka Julie Campell) ‘s Hinterland (literally ''the country behind'' in German) conjures impressions of decayed Manchester outskirts and reclusive inner landscapes as Campbell continues her fascination with the post-industrial ruinscape. At its core beats an uncomplicated drum machine rhythm and synthetic percussion that recalls fractured memories of minimal wave and even early techno and dance, dynamically spliced through with Campbell's intricate, choppy and propulsive guitar playing.

Format: Vinyl Boxlot: 15 Price: $22.99 Packaging: 1xLP in printed inner and outer, with download card

Campbell: “It’s channelling Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Rufus, Prince, Arthur Russell…among others. A strange - but nonetheless real - meeting of funk and…me from Audenshaw, Manchester.” The album is underpinned by an urgent post-punk sensibility, as Campbell describes it - “an inescapably cement-coloured North of England psyche.”

Girlpool

Girlpool is a Philadelphia byway of Los Angeles based two piece made up of Cleo Tucker (Guitar) and Harmony Tividad (Bass). Having met at local DIY venue the Smell, the two quickly grew very close. Their sound is raw, comprised only of a guitar, bass and vocal harmonies. The band uses this stripped-down instrumentation to accentuate their vulnerable yet powerful lyrics to create honest pieces, tackling concepts ranging from awareness and respect to the simple of feeling of being alone at a show.

“Musical Artist to Watch in 2015”

- TIME Magazine

“If rebellion had a sound, I imagine it would end up sounding a lot like Girlpool... It’s punk in the best sense of the word: fresh, raw, and uncompromising.” -Stereogum “Their voices challenge each other in a back-and-forth battle of scream and song, separately unique and together defiant. It’s a magnetic combination that’s impossible to ignore.” -Paste Magazine “Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad sing clever, biting, and occasionally breathtakingly poignant lyrics in off-kilter harmonies “ - Vulture

Oscar unexpectedly whipped the blogs into a frenzy in April 2013 with his self-released, Never Told You. Pitchfork bestowed Best New Music, The Guardian tagged him as a Band Of The Day and the NME took note - all whilst he was still in college. Upon graduating, Oscar followed up by releasing his 146b EP, which continued to garner praise with raves from Stereogum, Impose and extensive play from BBC 6 Music for multiple tracks. Wichita Recordings will release Oscar’s debut album later this year after a handful of singles - Daffodil Days being the first. The track was premiered online via The Fader in January and was quickly covered via 40+ blogs including Stereogum, NME, Fake DIY, drowned in Sound and The Line of Best Fit. A video for Daffodil Days will be premiered in March to coincide with street date and UK festival plays. Release Date: March 24 Artist: Oscar

Appetite For Adrenochrome

Groovie Ghoulies Greetings, Gang! How's it going today? Looking for something a little off the beaten path, yet with a beat? A little rock and rumble that doesn't sound like it was produced in a modern, sterile, technically enhanced "music production studio"? Well, then, have we got JUST the thing for you! Step back into our little rock and roll time machine.... don't worry, we're not going TOO far back, let's say how about 25 years? To a time when a younger Kepi Ghoulie rounded up a bunch of guys named John (yes, John Vetter on bass, John Rudgers on guitar, John Sosa on drums) and drove from L.A. to Sacramento to record his FIRST FULL LENGTH recording as the GROOVIE GHOULIES! (recorded by a guy named John, no less!) Throwing all of his musical influences into a rock and roll blender (The Ramones, Rolling Stones, Kiss, and bubblegum pop such as Herman's Hermits), out came "Appetite for Adrenochrome"! Recorded in two days (yes TWO DAYS, all musical tracks were laid down on a Saturday, vocals and mixing on Sunday), the band rehearsed and recorded the entire album in the sequence that you hear it on the record, to save time and money and be as prepared as they could! Listen closely and you will hear anywhere from two to five songs connect musically without any interruption whatsoever! Two guitars, bass and drums bash out 13 (of course) "hits", including tracks such as "Do The Bat", "Don't Go Out Into The Rain (You're Gonna Melt)", and "The Blob", several of which are STILL included in Kepi rock sets to this day!

Release Date: 3/24/2015 Highlights: - LPs pressed on colored vinyl - LPs include digital download card and insert - All new artwork and mini-comic insert by artist Tom Neely (Green Day, The Humans) - New version includes bonus tracks of classic covers “Pet Sematary” (Ramones) and “Girl In Black” (Troggs)

Marketing Plan:

A crash course in 80's rock, punk, garage, and underground/indie "pop", "Appetite For Adrenochrome" reflects the urgency of a bunch of young bucks trying to get their "message" out, and also is a fun little time capsule of the mad, mish-mash of music that was going on in Los Angeles at the time, with bands like Redd Kross, Haunted Garage, Celebrity Skin, and up-and-comers L7 and GWAR... The Groovie Ghoulies played shows and found camaraderie in these like minded, go-all-out, fellow rock bands. This era also found them playing great events, like a Herschell Gordon Lewis (2,000 Maniacs) film fest/lecture, years before Rob Zombie and the Ramones started hosting events in the "Hollywood Forever" cemetery.

- Last year was the 30th anniversary of Groovie Ghoulies, and Kepi continues to tour and promote the entire catalog - A line of Kepi-model guitars, recently manufactured via Eastwood Guitars in Toronto, quickly sold out. Two new sets of Kepi trading cards keep growing the number of fans in new and unique markets! - Recent press includes the Long Beach Post and Sacramento NPR affiliate CapRadio.Org - Key Markets reach beyond the usual US markets of Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Baltimore, Portland, Seattle, New York, Gainesville, Phoenix and Chicago, to the international growing fan base in Berlin, Madrid, Rotterdam, Oslo, and more!

The Groovie Ghoulies have always been a bit of "Hollywood Outsiders", never quite fitting in to certain genres and pigeon-shaped holes, and with "Appetite For Adrenochrome", you can kind of see the evolution of little Kepi taking his home made drum machine recordings out of the basement and to the streets with the first semi-solid, fully electric line up of a musical legacy that lasts until this day! Enjoy!

Fun In The Dark

Kepi Ghoulie and the Accelerators Hello friends! Kepi Ghoulie here to tell you the story of the next release on Kepiland Records: "Fun In The Dark," featuring the Accelerators from Holland, and yours truly on vocals! What we have here is a complete re-imagining of a classic Groovie Ghoulies full length recording, as interpreted by the tough, melodic band from the Netherlands. Fans of the original album, Accelerators used to play "Fun In the Dark" (the song) in their live set, and augmented it even more when I came over to do some shows with them in Europe. The same sort of thing has happened with the band the Copyrights and the Groovie Ghoulies album Release Date: 3/24/2015 "Re-Animation Festival" (but that's another story that you will hear about in Highlights: the future!).

- LPs pressed on colored vinyl - LPs include digital download card and insert - Recorded by Simon Baken in the Netherlands and David Houston at Moon Studios (California) - Features Asian Man Records recording artists / Kepi's dear friends Dog Party on back up vocals

So anyway, I don't know which came first, the chupacabra or the egg, but what ended up happening is that we decided to re-record a whole new version of this classic disc: music recorded by the Accelerators in Holland, vocals by Kepi, back-ups by stalwart friends Dog Party from Sacramento, and Marketing Plan: what have you got? A pretty fresh, new, exciting interpretation of a legendary - Both Kepi and the Accelerators tour relentlessly in the (?) "pop punk" album! Hooray! US and Europe individually, and have also done tours All the hits are there that the kids love: 'Fun In The Dark', 'She Gets All The Girls', 'She's My Vampire Girl'... and don't worry if you are a fan of the original album, it will be re-issued in the future on Green Door, so you don't have to feel like we are trying to replace or re-write history! This is just a super fun, super rocking collection of songs, and who wouldn't want to enjoy that! Once again, we have created a recording of a group of friends who appreciate and respect what each other does, joining forces to make a document of that relationship and the music/fun/energy it has brought forth!

and festivals together - A line of Kepi-model guitars, recently manufactured via Eastwood Guitars in Toronto, quickly sold out. GENRE: Synth Pop, Post-Rock, Indie Rock WORLDWIDE RELEASE

btv099

Williams Shift is a new project from Matthew Stone (Soporus, Saxon Shore) and Stephen Roessner (Saxon Shore, Small Signals). We Were Wonderers was recorded in various home studios, produced and mixed by Grammy award winning producer Roessner in conjunction with Stone, and features the vocalist Jill Purdy. Williams Shift comes to life as an outgrowth of the poppiest elements incorporated in songs recorded as members of the instrumental band Saxon Shore combined with the concept of the “Williams Shift” where defenders would align themselves to better field naturally pulled hits from Boston slugger Ted Williams. The band blends soaring synth pop influences with an ever-expanding and spiraling Williams mythology and weight of the Cosmos. Captivated by theories of human cryonic suspension and the cagey details postWilliams mortem, the band embraces an actively dreaming suspended head and an alternate future of Williams’ awakening. His frozen head orbits the earth on a satellite with other cryonically frozen beings, a tragic Greek chorus echoing Williams’ thoughts through Brian Wilson-esque (musician, not reliever) melodies. This is an ode to melody, love lost, remembrance, baseball, Ted Williams’ legacy, and the universe with a hefty dose of artistic license and imagination and the resulting existential and philosophical ramifications. Williams Shift has been a long dream for Matthew Stone even while he was touring with Saxon Shore. The instrumental track “Dock Ellis Spirit Animal” represents a touchstone and transitional point from his work as guitarist in Saxon Shore and the more pop elements captured in We Were Wonderers. A track like “Sustained Combustion” from Saxon Shore’s It Doesn’t Matter was a Stone-penned melody initially conceived as a proto-Williams Shift track. On “Dock Ellis,” Stone’s instrumental pop melody continues on that spectrum with Stephen Roessner’s production mixing in various guitar arrangements to heighten the pure pop energy. Thematically, Dock Ellis’ LSD-fueled no-hitter story ranks high in the canon of crazy baseball stories and links back to some of the Ted Williams inspired baseball themes on the album. “The Heads And The Bodies” is an energetic track that bridges Matthew Stone & Stephen Roessner‘s previous instrumental work with Saxon Shore and develops that post-rock influenced soundscape to layer vocals, synths, shoegaze guitars, and strings. Shimmering female vocals, provided by vocalist Jill Purdy, were an essential requirement to Stone’s idea for Williams Shift and serve to balance Stone’s vocals. It borrows a bit of sunshine in the form of vocal harmonies, linking to the summery scene of Ted Williams remembering his last at bat in Boston. Roessner’s masterful drumming and production add the final glue which holds the palpable sonic landscape together. Lyrically, the track introduces the apocryphal story of Williams’ cryonically frozen head. When blood was exchanged for the cryonic fluids, his severed head was placed on a small metal tuna can to prevent it from being frozen to the case where it was stored. Ultimately, the can froze to the head and proved difficult to remove. An opportunistic worker in the facility used a wrench to knock the tuna can off, missing the can on the first strike, and instead bashing the frozen head of Mr. Williams. We Were Wonderers' artwork was based upon the frozen head story. An ice sculpture head was commissioned and high-speed still and video cameras were positioned by Philadelphia photographer/director Timothy Stevens to capture Stone chipping away at the ice head with a wrench. The still images were processed to capture the cover and insert art and the video was used as a preview video announcing the album. We Were Wonderers was predominantly conceived as a studio side-project, but Stone and Roessner have assembled a live band that is currently practicing and preparing Williams Shift tracks for live shows later in 2015. We Were Wonderers is available on both cd and 2xLP. The 2xLP features a 4th side etching from John Ringhofer (Halfhanded Cloud) representing some of the album's thematic elements. The vinyl is pressed on blue vinyl with white marble veins and white vinyl with blue marble veins and presented in a gatefold jacket. Additionally, there is a limited edition cassette featuring the instrumental version of We Were Wonderers and released in conjunction with our good friends at Flannelgraph Records in Bloomington, IN.

Attention please, we’d like to shine a light on the man whose records would come to define many a Numbers party, who once described his music as "for the strippers, for the street”. The original master of Ghetto House, the one and only DJ Deeon. Hailing from the Southside of Chicago, Deeon started out selling mixtapes in his local neighbourhood and playing at sweatbox house parties. Soon he’d graduate from DJ’ing to production, creating gritty XXX club tracks purely for the moment and the party. The music came from the classic drum machines that provided the spark for Chicago House and Detroit Techno whilst the lyrics and call & response chants were inspired by the parties he frequented. These tracks originally released from 1994 onwards on the seminal Dance Mania label and now remastered from the original DAT tapes for rerelease on Numbers would go on to forge the Ghetto House sound alongside fellow DJ’s: Funk, Jammin' Gerald, Slugo, Paul Johnson & Houz’Mon. What made Deeon’s tracks special was that when he told you to shake it, that’s exactly what you did. Deeon continues to produce and DJ to this day. We fulfilled a longstanding ambition of ours by having him play at one of our 10th Anniversary Parties in New York in 2013, and whilst he’s still doing records for Dance Mania we at Numbers wanted to highlight some of the tracks that we love the most. So with the full blessing of Deeon himself, we have compiled our version of a DJ Deeon greatest hits EP. We kick things off with ‘2 B Free’ taken from 1996’s ‘Deeon Doez Disco’, its monstrous jacking drums providing the guts for the First Choice sample to ride on top if it. Next is ‘HouseOMatic’, which was originally part of 1994’s

‘Funk City’ twelve. Hammered by Mills and almost everyone else back in the 90’s it’s all about the raw drums and rubbery bassline. We then stride forward to 1996’s ‘Freak Like Me’, adding an xrated taste of feminine pressure to the mix before closing off is one of the grittiest jack tracks we know, ‘The 604’. Pure analogue madness. This record is dedicated to the legacy of DJ Deeon, a man whose music born in Chicago went on to inform many an underground dance scene around the globe, from Glasgow to Rio to South Africa and back. We urge you all to continue buying Deeon's records, to see him DJ wherever possible and to carry on shaking dat ass to the classics.

Dance music for heads, hearts and feet from Adesse Versions and Numbers. 'Pride' is that chord heavy, spine tingling vocal house 'numberre' that has been cropping up on our radio show and mixes. Vocals over tough tracks are nothing new, think classics such as Ralphi Rosario's 'You Used To Hold Me' and DJ Pierre's 'Mystery Girl'. Tracks that kicked hard in the club but still had that sweet vocal to keep you moving and singing along. 'Pride' does just that, it bangs. On the flip is 'First Time', whose celestial tones were created amongst the stars before being gracefully transmitted back to Earth.

New Zealand psychgazers Surf City return with an album of sticky summer jams and fuzzy swirls and out and out dream pop blasts. Harnessing the explorations of 2013's We Knew It Was Not Going To Be Like This into more focused packages, the group still delivers reverb-soaked joy at every turn. Adding in a return to their earlier efforts in crafting the perfect jittery motorik pop song, Jekyll Island finds the band at the height of their powers. Centred around singer/guitarist Davin Stoddard's wry observations and sing song delivery, the record sees Jamie Kennedy increasingly pick up a guitar as well and add a welcome dimension of sunken melodies and lock step fuzz at all of the right moments. Mike Ellis and Andy Frost hold things together with a constant driving beat and rhythm that proves undeniable. Following a wander around the globe landing Stoddard in the U.S., Mexico, India and South Korea, the band finally find themselves reunited back home and ready to blast out their unique blend of Flying Nunesque hooky pop smarts, Yo La Tengo loopy psych travels, Neu! krautrock, and a never-ending infectious layer of sun-drenched fuzz. 1. Debut long-player from York-based Fawn Spots. Pulsating with a visceral tension, the album calls to mind the cathartic energy of Fugazi and Husker Du with the disparate post punk angularity of Joy Division and Mission of Burma; urgent and raw but keeping to a clear sense of melody. From Safer Place thrusts you headfirst into its roaring surge. Lyrically, main songwriter Jonathan Meager has produced his most challenging, personal and complete work to date, influenced by T. S. Eliot and Jean Paul Sartre amongst others. Jonathan pinpoints Fawn Spots ethos as one borrowed from Guy Debord and The Situationists to live without dead time, to become liberated from the everyday. With Jonathan Meager and Oliver Grabowski on vocals and guitars, and recent addition Paddy Carley on drums, Fawn Spots intention for their debut was to capture the band in its purest form. Recording and engineering the album themselves gave Fawn Spots the opportunity to capture the bands authenticity, an impression of which is best expressed in New Sense, a blistering evocation for a hidden world never exposed to reveal itself. 1. Amy Hart

LIVE AT THE MAYNE STAGE Born and raised in Chicago, AMY HART began her musical career at the family piano at age 2. She began playing guitar and writing songs in high school. Her first professional gig was in 1979 with a West Side Chicago Blues Band. She was soon a regular on the blues stages, playing at Kingston Mines and at B.L.U.E.S. with Junior Wells, and opening shows for Koko Taylor and James Cotton. She won the WLUP sponsored Chicago Rocks Contest twice, and released two compilation records with the radio Station. Amy took her music to California to work with producer John Ryan (Doobie Brothers, Santana) and released a song on the Mercury Records Soundtrack “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” in 1985. The movie has achieved cult status, and continues racking up royalties around the world for Hart. In the 90’s she followed her dreams to Nashville and released EVERY BEAT OF MY HEART on her own Painted Rock Records. With a modern Country feel, the album also revealed her strong Blues influences, and the critics applauded her style. Soon after that release Amy moved to the Gulf Coast with her young daughter and husband number two. The marriage ended after a year, but Amy stayed in Florida for ten years playing and supporting herself and her daughter on the Gulf Coast music scene. Her daughter graduated high school weeks after the Horizon oil spill devastated the Florida economy, and after losing all her jobs, Amy hit the road. Back in Nashville in 2011, she released CONGRATULATIONS on Painted Rock, and has not looked back. Her sights have been set on singing and playing the blues, but her journey has broadened her style to include a distinct Americana and even Country feel. The Amy Hart Band tours most of the year, rocking clubs and festivals in Southern cities like Memphis, Atlanta, Charlotte, and New Orleans, with the occasional tour to other parts of the country and the world – she recently headlined the Himalayan Blues Fest in Kathmandu, Nepal. Still living in Nashville, Amy Hart returned to Chicago recently for several dates including a featured artist spot on “Music from the Mayne Stage,” which was recorded in July 2014 at the beautifully renovated Mayne Stage Theatre in Rogers Park. The set was televised for PBS to be broadcast Spring 2015 on 180 affiliate stations around the country. Amy considers the resulting album LIVE AT THE MAYNE STAGE a tribute to her touring band: Gene Bush (a student of Mississippi John Hurt from Laurel, MS ) on Dobro, Grammy-nominated harpist PT Gazell, her husband Wally Hoffman on Upright Bass, and Matt McDowell on Drums. The new CD has a softer, more organic feel than her previous work, with a nod to her own personal journey and years of writing, playing, travelling, and living. Gracefully sidestepping all the usual pigeonholes, Amy Hart continues to grow as a uniquely emotive artist.

Marienbad is the third album from the Estonian band, TARTU POPI JA ROKI INSTITUUT. This eight-member combo from Tartu, Estonia, has clearly drawn serious inspiration from the music of Stereolab, combining Krautrock grooves, gurgling analog synthesizers, and bright melodic shapes gleaned from so-called sunshine pop acts like the Free Design. But Tartu Popi ja Roki Instituut also taps some of its homeland’s sounds.

* In advance on the album release, the band has performed concerts in New York City, Chicago and Minneapolis in 2015. Addi tional tour dates to be announced this Summer. * Airplay on NPR including a live performance in WBEZ (Chicago) and an interview on WMSE (Milwaukee). * Early airplay on WMSE (Milwaukee) and The Current (Minneapolis). * YouTube video for "Marienbad" available now. * Press campaign underway. Mojo review upcoming.

INFORMATION:

As the popularity of Footwork has continued to soar, the range of sounds within the genre has expanded. From the angular, minimal beats of RP Boo to the widely admired and popular sound of sadly departed DJ Rashad, the genre has lovingly seeped into hearts and feet worldwide whilst continuing to innovate. Until now most of the focus has been on the male DJ/Producers, but that is about to change. Gary based producer Jlin, who some of you might remember for her track “Erotic Heat” (Bangs and Works Vol.2 – Planet Mu 2011), or from her moment in the mainstream light providing music for fashion designer Rick Owens’ FW/14 Paris runway show, is stepping further into the light with a stunning eleven track debut album “Dark Energy” showcasing her unique and bold new sound.

Gary, Indiana, a neighbouring City to Chicago, is one of those towns people overlook or perhaps expect the worst of. It's famous for the Jackson 5 and its Steel Mills, one of which Jlin works long shifts at. She says her sound and “the themes behind my tracks are all based off what my creativity absorbs, whether it be bad or good”, and the music certainly shows that intent. It's forceful, yet ripples with colour; it’s an intense, monolithic sound with rugged rhythms that stop and breathe and roll out in unusual staccato patterns. It’s a sound unlike any other out there, one that’s fiercely unique. Her track titles are as evocative as the music is intense and hint at deeper themes – “Black Diamond”, “Guantanamo”, “Abnormal Restriction”. She notes “The titles I chose are based off failing and learning.” Album track ”Expand” also features a vocal from another important female artist respected experimental West Coast producer Holly Herndon whom Jlin has been quietly collaborating with. Her album “Dark Energy” is so called because of where it came from and how it came to be; the dark monolith on the cover also perfectly encapsulates it – “This album took my entire life to make. Every moment in my life lead up to this album. My musical sense of expression comes from sadness, and anger. I can't create from a happy place. It seems pointless in my opinion. I don't make the tracks as much as I feel them. Creating for me is about feeling and impact.” Jlin has been supported by all the key players in the Footwork scene and says she is “thankful to many.” 2015 feels like the year people are ready for a new voice in Footwork and Jlin is a true original with a hard, yet infectious style and an album that showcases it brilliantly.

Family Entertainment 9. Black on Black 10. Transience OVERVIEW: Scuba's musical biography has been a story of constant change. Over the past eleven years, his music has zigzagged through bass, techno and house, at times dark and contemplative, at others bright and anthemic. A look at his discography bears out this creative restlessness: from the shadowy rhythms of A Mutual Antipathy and Triangulation, through the soaring melodies of Personality and the cardinal "Adrenalin" EP. Claustrophobia is more than just the next phase in this development—it's a culmination of everything that's come so far. As its name implies, the record is tense and inward-looking, but it's also rich and dynamic, nimbly moving through a panorama of moods and styles. Rhythms expand and contract from one song to the next, textural passages give way to shimmering strands of melody, found sounds and field recordings breathe life into ambient sketches. The album is modern and understated throughout, but also touched with something unrestrained: the exhilarating energy of classic rave. The album comes at a pivotal moment for Scuba. In the past few years, he's gigged heavily, playing countless festivals and clubs around the world. The hugely influential Hotflush Recordings, the label Scuba runs, has expanded rapidly, with upwards of a dozen releases each year, including widely loved titles from the likes of Joy Orbison, Mount Kimbie and Paul Woolford. But Claustrophobia was written in a period of relative calm. Scuba began the album last summer as he prepared for his set at Labyrinth, the intimate techno festival in the mountains of Japan. On that autumnal afternoon, given four hours on the world's best Funktion One, he traced the full arc of his current sound, from sonorous Rhythm & Sound-style dub to full-on warpath techno. Claustrophobia, which he finished in the months following Labyrinth, has the same bold and comprehensive quality as that performance. We only occasionally get a 4/4 thud—most tracks are built on lurching, angular rhythms, sometimes subtle ("Drift," "All I Think About Is Death") sometimes monolithic ("Television," "Needle Phobia"). A few tracks, like "Levitation" and "Transience," are essentially beat-free, but are not mere interludes—with vivid tones and striking depth of field, they have as much gravitas as their thumping companions ("PCP," "Why You Feel So Low" or "Black On Black"). Sleek, versatile and aurally lush, Claustrophobia is Scuba at his most immersive. LIVE: May – 15th – Miami; 16th – NYC; 21st – Seattle; 22nd - San Francisco; 23rd – Denver; 24th – Montreal

MILO A TO O T H PA S T E SUBURB

HFC-027-LP MILO: A TOOTHPASTE SUBURB RELEASE DATE: MARCH 24, 2015 LP

www.fakefourinc.com www.hellfyreclub.bandcamp.com LABEL INQUIRIES: JEEP WARD FAKE FOUR INC. JEEP@FAKEFOURINC.COM 203-434-3838 DISTRIBUTION INQUIRIES: LORI MILLER REDEYE DISTRIBUTION LORI@REDEYEUSA.COM 336-395-1145

His debut album, a toothpaste suburb, does just as much to play up the commonalities Milo has with his label mates (and his place in the underground hip-hop world) as it does to show off just who he is himself. Milo's own qualities are obvious from his first 16 bars: a heavy-lidded deadpan whose flow calmly lets the punchlines deliver themselves, whether they're references to Arthur Schopenhauer or shameless fart jokes. Those aren't rare qualities—you get similar approaches on this very album from guests like Open Mike Eagle, who pulls Shel Silverstein wordplay on "objectifying rabbits", and Kool A.D., who is dementedly meta with a thinking-aloud verse on "in gaol". With the burbling, usually mellow digitalisms of producers iglooghost, Riley Lake, Greyhat, and Tastenothing giving his voice both gravity and lightness where it's needed, there's a feeling that Milo's been able to get in where he fit in, not just got in 'cause he fought in. But the realm of the West Coast art-wiseass black intellectual is neither one to take for granted or one to set a low barrier of entry for, and milo's place in and radiating outside of it is well earned off his own synthesis of experience. His referential eclecticism might otherwise seem random for its own sake in isolation, a string of phrases hammered into place; the second verse of "sanssouci palace" alone drops references to Avril Lavigne, Clerks, "Squidbillies", but the track starts cohering to depict a more complete identity the further it knits together. When it does, there's some deep rumination and staring into the void that exists beneath all the jokes. "salladhor saan, smuggler" is a stark autobio alluding to isolation and suicidal thoughts staved off by a steady diet of Jean Genet, Office Space, and the subsequent realization that Milo was capable of total artistic freedom. A recurring through-line, the too-soon passing of his friend Rob, is both alluded to and directly addressed with a mixture of survivor's guilt, yearning, and resignation. So Milo's voice acts fairly slow to reveal the intentions beneath the words' surface, trusting listeners to connect the dots. That's one way of staking a claim on curious ears, a connection to someone who, per "a day trip to the nightosphere," doesn't dabble in secret societies. Milo's society is far more open. - Pitchfork.com Review
