THE MINUS 5 DUNGEON GOLDS RELEASE DATE CD/LP: 3/10/15

Dungeon Golds was recorded primarily in the basement (a.k.a. The Dungeon) of Scott McCaughey, leader of The Minus 5. These songs are the product of sporadic spare moments of inspiration over the last few years. This collection was artfully curated, by McCaughey, from the extremely limited edition (500 copies) Record Store Day 2014 vinyl only box set, Scott The Hoople In The Dungeon Of Horror. In the process of compiling these tracks, McCaughey could not resist reworking several of these songs. As a result, half the songs are different versions than what appeared on the box set. This is the first digital/CD release of any of these tracks. Guests include, Peter Buck, Jeff Tweedy, Ian McLagan, Jon Moen and Nate Query (The Decemberists), Linda Pitmon, and many others.

HIGHLIGHTS: - Many special guests, including: Peter Buck, Jeff Tweedy, Ian McLagan, and more… - Updated mixes on half of the albums tracks - Record release shows in Seattle (3/20/15) and Portland OR (3/21/15) supporting The Decemberists TRACK LISTING: SIDE A: 1. My Generation 2. It’s Beautiful Here 3. In The Ground 4. Adios Half Soldier 5. Zero Clowns 6. Chinese Saucer Magnolia SIDE B: 1. It’s Magenta, Man! 2. The History You Hate 3. Sorry Town 4. Yumi Zouma EP II EP on 10” Vinyl, March 10

Yumi Zouma began as a project in 2013 between three friends from New Zealand. The songs were never intended to leave the equipment they were composed on. In January 2014, their debut EP launched to overwhelming acclaim – lauded as being undeniably stylish and honest. The months that followed saw the band repeatedly climb to #1 on the Hype Machine, collaborate with musical role models, Air France, and support both Lorde and Chet Faker on important tours. Yumi Zouma now returns with their much anticipated second EP, bookending their era of intimate and restrained shortform releases. The new tracks are just as effortless and engaging as expected, but they also tell the story of a band evolving. Lush, electronic productions buoy key tracks and the vocal deliveries are increasingly sophisticated. International shows are currently being routed.

Never Young is a noise rock band from the Bay Area in California. Blending raw punk sounds and 90's guitar music with a synthetic digital aesthetic, their rhythmic militant anthems interplay with angular pop songwriting. Principle songwriters Christopher Adams (vocals/guitar) and Nikolas Soelter (guitar/vocals) and Niko Escudero (bass) are founding members of Calculator (Count Your Lucky Stars), with Samuelito Cruz of Happy Diving and Toner on drums. Never Young’s futurist sound is eshed out and fully realized on their new self-titled EP out March 10, 2015; the sound of a pastel yellow iPhone 5c crashing through the window of your psyche. This EP follows their debut album, Never Young, released in 2014 also on Father/Daughter Records. neveryoung.bandcamp.com facebook.com/neveryoung1mil Recommended If You Like... Passionate We Are Both Writers Born Beautiful He Calls Me Following Days Before Bridges Worth Burning’s release, Kind of Like Spitting had released I Want Out six previous albums on small DIY labels (three on Portland, OR’s beloved Canaries Hush Records). Taking a staunchly independent, working-class approach Tyco Racing Set And A Christmas Story Fifteen Times to making records and performing, KOLS often played in houses and in This Lemonade Is Terrible unofficial venues, sometimes as a blistering full band but more often as Crossover Potential singer Ben Barnett and his guitar. They released 4 more full-lengths on Continent independent Pacific Northwest labels before taking an extended hiatus in Untitled

2006.

During the past 8+ years, word of mouth continued to spread about the band and Kind of Like Spitting’s prolific output found a whole new generation of fans. In late 2014, the band surprised everyone by announcing it would be reforming, playing shows and releasing new music on Topshelf Records in 2015. With the band reemerging, and a wonderful album that has long been unavailable on wax, now is the perfect time to grant the wishes of KOLS fans who regularly contact Barsuk asking why they can’t get Bridges Worth Burning on vinyl.

STUDIO ONE JUMP UP The Birth Of A Sound: Jump-Up Jamaican R&B, Jazz and Early Ska

Street Date: 10th March 2015 No shipments outside of North America

In the 1960s Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s legendary Studio One Records laid down the template for all reggae music, the equivalent of Jamaica’s Motown Records. Artists who launched their careers there comprise an A-Z of the Jamaican music scene – Bob Marley and The Wailers, Burning Spear, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Freddie McGregor, Marcia Griffiths, Horace Andy and many, many more. In the early releases featured here you will find the roots of Studio One’s unique sound – from the first jump-up, boogie-woogie and shuffle recordings made in Jamaica in the late 1950s, as the artists emulated their American rhythm and blues idols – Louis Jordan, Roscoe Gordon, Fats Domino – through to the early Rastafari rhythms of Count Ossie, the righteous Baptist beat of Toots and the Maytals up to the joyous excitement of Ska with tracks by Studio One’s young protégées Bob Marley and The Wailers and the all-mighty Skatalites. Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd first began recording music in the late 1950s, making one-off records to play on his Downbeat Sound System. These ‘exclusive dup-plates’ enabled him to reign supreme in the regular dancehall soundclashes of Kingston, fighting off the competition from rivals including Duke Reid the Trojan and Prince Buster. This new album traces the roots of the legendary label as it created the sound of the young independent Jamaican nation going into the early 1960s. Sir Coxsone used only the finest musicians in Jamaica for these recordings, including those players that would later become known worldwide as the Skatalites, Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Ernest Ranglin, Rico Rodriguez, Cluett Johnson and others. As fans clamoured to get a copy of these ‘one-off’ exclusive records, Clement Dodd eventually decided to start making them available commercially starting in 1959, and so began the birth of an empire. And so by the time the new Studio One studio/record company/pressing plant complex at 13 Brentford Road opened its doors in 1963, with The Skatalites in place as the inhouse band, the foundations of Jamaica’s most important record label had already been firmly established. As well as those listed above, this album brings together some of the finest of these early reggae artists to record for Clement Dodd including Derrick Morgan, Owen Gray, Derrick Harriott, Lord Creator and Owen Gray. First time on CD for µ-Ziq’s previously vinyl-only EPs Rediffusion and XTEP combined here with exclusive track ‘Forger’ as the XTLP. In stark contrast to a large percentage of his previous work, XTLP is joyous all the way through. The twelve compositions abandon the furrow-browed quest for cutting-edge exploration exchanging it for an altogether more carefree & fun approach, with only the footwork-influenced 'Monj2' and exclusive track ‘Forger’ directly referencing any current electronic influences.

TRACKLIST:

01 XT 02 Ritm 03 Taxi Sadness 04 Smeester 05 Pulsar 06 Monj2 07 New Bimple 08 Rimmy 09 PRG 10 Forger 11 Tambor 12 Blem

Opening with the gorgeous 'XT'; a smudged piano/moog melody recalls the abandon of 70s pop melodies before the composition falls out into airy arpeggiated funk with splashy drums. 'Ritm' debuts with ravey piano and whistling synths, condensing early dance music tropes into a gauzy bittersweet haze. 'Smeester's gentle metallic melodies give way to a menacing hip hop style bass and drums, and chords that drift and decay. 'Pulsar' is a perfect interpretation / tribute to late 70s electronic cosmic space-disco, gently nudged towards more modern dancefloors with pulsing electronics racing above robust kicks / claps. After the aforementioned Monj2, comes 'New Bimple' which succinctly uses a short space of time, woody, swinging 2-step drums and downcast piano melody, to bring the album’s halfway point to a sadder, unresolved note. 'PRG' is beatless, full of gentle whispy coiling melodies through a distorted lens. 'Tambor' rolls slowly on metallic percussion, a sad melodic figure that repeats into despair, as the album finishes with closer 'Blem' which mixes trappy snares and twilight atmosphere with big melodic brushstrokes that remind one of John Foxx. If one thing unites the approaches here it's a new-found sense of emotion transformed into sound with the skill of a truly seasoned innovator and soldier. Welcome back µ-Ziq!

INFORMATION:

Featuring just two tracks, The Entropik EP sees Ekoplekz stretching his sound towards breaking point, each track extending well past the ten minute mark, slowly evolving yet with a sustained intensity, strength of purpose and emotional impact that ensures that neither outstays their welcome.

TRACK LISTING:

SIDE A: ENTROPY FLASH SIDE B: ENTROPY SYMPHONY

"Entropy Flash" is a pile-driving epic - the relentless, heavily filtered analogue rhythms and skull-splitting drones offset by delicate, wistful melodies and a warm, extemporized bassline. It's title might make reference to a classic techno track by Beltram, but there the similarity ends. This is no homage, the sound is pure Ekoplekz, and the onus is on the listener to gauge what statement, if any, is being made here. Fans of a certain late-eighties psychedelic dronerock group might spot another reference in the title of the flipside, "Entropy Symphony", though as with the A-side, all sense of 'Ecstasy' has long since evaporated. Beginning with a volley of pensive, densely entwined melodic loops, the track is gradually submerged in layers of searing dronenoise. Though further propelled by the introduction of a one-note bass hit, ultimately the 'symphony' disintegrates into a grey void of instability. Whether or not the listener chooses to interpret this EP in a conceptual sense, there is no doubt that this is some of the most powerful, life-affirming music to emanate from Ekoplekz' lo-fi studio hideaway to date.

“Where most artists use their debut album to fine tune their sound, Katie has produced something special on her first attempt - an art that can take many of her contemporaries years to hone.” – A BADGE OF FRIENDSHIP Katie Buchan, aka Best Girl Athlete, has dreams like many other 15 year olds, but talent unlike any other. From Aberdeen, Scotland, Katie’s enchanting voice and burgeoning song writing talent is truly remarkable. Not many teenagers care to be in the same room as their parents let alone play music with them. However, Katie is the exact opposite. Katie’s father, CS Buchan, has been a pivotal inspiration to her musical career. Growing up watching her father perform in various bands, Katie has always played a part in offering critical comments for her father when he needed an honest opinion about his songs. Charley began writing for himself just over the last few years, anchoring his style in contemporary Scottish folk, and with Katie’s involvement has begun to veer towards an indie pop direction, whilst firmly retaining that folk element. With her boundless enthusiasm for creating music and her carefree persona, Katie has already won hearts and Best Girl Athlete demonstrates a unique blend of youthfulness and maturity that is rarely seen in music. • • • • • • •

Leapling, the brainchild of Brooklyn-based songwriter Dan Arnes, juxtaposes moments of subtle beauty with harsh, guitar-driven noise to create a sound both brilliant and infectiously catchy. The band’s debut EP, , released in early 2013 on Father/Daughter Records, established Leapling’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the world of experimental pop. finds the band picking up where they left off, casually moving forward with a newfound looseness and the continuing desire to push the envelope into unexplored realms. Joined by long-time members Yoni David (drums), R.J. Gordon (bass) and Joe Postiglione (guitar) for the first time on record, was tracked live with a clear sense of purpose and urgency. Arnes’ delicate vocals and stream-of-consciousness narratives come to life when combined with Postiglione’s serpentine licks, David’s loose percussion style and Gordon’s hypnotic bass lines. The seamless interplay between musicians is as indicative of the quartet’s bond as it is Arnes’ songwriting. The Fortunes - The Complete Decca Singles 1963-1967 & More Dynamic Voice JEWEL CD

DV02CD

$16.99

The illustrious Fortunes formed as a vocal trio and released their first single in 1963, a cover of The Jamies’ “Summertime, Summertime” backed with “I Love Her Still”. It flopped and they expanded to a five piece. Their next single, “Caroline”, may not have been a chart success, but was fondly loved as the theme song to Britain’s first infamous pirate radio station, Radio Caroline. Trying once again, the lads released an excellent, Mersey-influenced two sider, “Come On Girl”/”I Like The Look Of You”…and then another, “Look Homeward Angel”. Despite the fantastic sounds coming out of the grooves, still no chart action for The Fortunes. This came with their next 45, Greenaway & Cook’s innovative “You’ve Got Your Troubles”, which reached the Top 5 in the UK and Top 10 in the US. An album was released to capitalize on the sudden success with readings of current hits by others like “Looking Through The Eyes of Love” and “All Cried Out”, as well as top notch originals penned by outside writers – see “Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance)” and “Laughing Fit To Cry” for examples of tracks that could have easily been A-Sides for the guys. The bulk of the album can be found on this disc. The album also included their next hit, “Here It Comes Again”. “This Golden Ring” followed the same formula, and found favour with UK buyers. Further singles showed the 1 Caroline 2 If You Don’t Want Me Now 3 Come On Girl 4 I Like The Look Of You 5 Look Homeward Angel 6 I’ll Have My Tears To Remind Me 7 You’ve Got Your Troubles 8 I’ve Got To Go 9 Looking Through The Eyes Of Love 10 Won’t You Give Him (One More Chance) 11 This Empty Place 12 I’m Still Alone 13 If We Lived On Top Of A Mountain 14 Laughing Fit To Cry 15 Coloured Lights 16 All Cried Out 17 Voice Your Choice 18 Time To Be Going 19 Here It Comes Again 20 Things I Should Have Known 21 This Golden Ring 22 Someone To Care 23 You Gave Me Somebody To Love 24 Silent Street 25 Gone From My Mind 26 Is It Really Worth Your While 27 Am I Losing My Touch 28 Our Love Has Gone

Tigercats – Mysteries Fortuna POP! LP FPOP184LP 5060044172403 $21.99 DIGI CD FPOP184CD 5060044172410 $15.99

East London’s Tigercats return with their new album and first release for Fortuna POP! Mysteries is vividly emotional and sonically expansive, blending the very best of indiepop with complex song structures, lush production and beautiful arrangements. Tigercats combine the talents of songwriter, singer and guitarist Duncan Barrett with his brother Giles on bass, Laura Kovic on keyboards and vocals, and Jonny Evans on drums, as well as recent recruit Paul Rains from Allo Darlin’ on guitar. And on Mysteries they’re joined by living legend Terry Edwards (Gallon Drunk / Tindersticks), who contributes saxophone and trumpet on several tracks. Tigercats have toured across Europe, playing at Primavera and appearing on Spanish TV, while back in the UK they’ve appeared at both Indietracks and End of the Road festivals. Many of the songs on the album have been live staples, starting off one way and mutating in to something totally different, giving the songs time to grow and develop before heading in to the studio. And once they did head in, bassist Giles Barrett’s day job at London’s legendary Soup Studios allowed the band nearly unlimited time to get deeper in to the recording process – so deep that it verged on insanity. Mysteries is the sound of a band of outstanding musicians fulfilling their potential and using their talents in the studio to realise their musical vision, retaining their infectious hooks, their heart and their sheer danceability, and coupling it with a bright new contemporary sound. Superbly crafted and full of personality, Tigercats’ second album suggests that they won’t remain a mystery much longer. “A record that is full of personality, vitality, and even youthful rebellion, the sort of record that very well might reinvigorate indiepop.” Drowned in Sound 1. Junior Champion 2. Laura And Cesar 3. King Of Vic 4. Globe Town 5. Call Me If You Need Me 6. Wheezer 7. Too Sad To Tell You 8. Sleeping In The Back Seat 9. So Haunted 10. Wendy And Lisa
