Conny Plank was certainly one of the most unusual producers that I ever met and it took some years till we stood vis-a-vie. He told me how much he had laughed about an article I had published in a technical magazine for musicians where I maintained how to fire a tone engineer in order to save money.

Conny said “you are right“. It was the beginning of a close friendship. At that time ‘Conny’s Studio’ together with the Can studio (former „Inner Space Studio“) became the no.1 addresses among bands and musicians who wanted to reach out for unknown horizons.

There was no problem for versatile Conny working with artists from the past like Duke Ellington & His Orchestra or Bert Kempfert as well as with younger groups like Killing Joke, Ultravoxx!, Devo, Eurythmics, Brian Eno, D.A.F. and Scorpions.

One day he left his ‘driving’ chair and came to the Can studio with his trumpet. Together with Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit and Tommy Engel from Cologne group Black Föss he gave groove support to dancing metal clothes artist Pop Top from New York presenting some of his Coca-Cola snap collections. We immediately started working on some lyrics when a gentleman from New York dropped in who had played in the ‘Bread & Puppet Theater’. ‘Biomutanten’ was born…where a car driver got a motor problem next to a slimy garbage place from where he got attacked by yet unknown monsters. I never met such a creative partner like Conny Plank again.

After starting separately as beat makers during the golden age of indie hip-hop in the late 90s, the duo united and expanded their repertoire in 2006 with the double album A Heap Of Broken Images. The first disc of this album was their first official foray into purely instrumental work. Subsequently they have pursued both avenues, collaborating with several rappers while also releasing two more instrumental suites – Late Night Cinema and Noir. Paying homage to their mutual appreciation of southern rap traditions in a historically unique way, the duo also created chopped & screwed version of these albums, respectively called Lean Night Cinema and Noir + Violet.

Striving to continue progress into unexpected directions, Blue Sky Black Death now present their most ambitious and original work yet. Glaciers is a culmination of years of experimentation, a realization of ideas which were only hinted at in their previous efforts. While the tag ‘instrumental hip-hop’ could still be applied nominally, the duo’s appreciation of post-rock, shoegaze and prog-rock makes for a daring sonic blend far removed from the repetitive loops and structures traditionally associated with this genre.

This departure from convention is accentuated further by cameos from fellow Fake Four Inc. signees Child Actor and singer JMSN. Their collaborations with BSBD are symbiotic, marked by mutual testing of comfort zones, the guests and their hosts pushing each other beyond boundaries of previous experience. To ensure that the presentation of Glaciers is as unique as its contents, the cover was commissioned to the multi-talented Maxime Buchi; a notable tattooist, designer and creative director of the cult favorite Sang Bleu magazine.

Even when accounting for the continuously blurring lines between rap production and electronic and ambient music, what happens on Glaciers still stands as nearly unprecedented. Simply put, the aim here is to go big. In one regard this means longer songs, with several tracks reaching over 10 minutes. But beyond just length, there is a sense of operatic grandiosity that imbues even the album’s shorter entries.

The group has combined samples with live instrumentation before, but never so dramatically and profoundly as now. The listener is placed directly into the eye of the storm as all around him chords and vocals swell and fall, awash in sweeping waves of synth and bass. The effect is sometimes chaotic but never violent. Blue Sky Black Death craft music of tumultuous beauty; music at once both exciting and soothing. Predicated on this contradiction, their compositions coalesce into a singular harmony. They form a new terrain from disparate building blocks, a vast alien expanse of sound waiting to be explored.

The first in a series of Wreckless Eric reissues by Fire Records are the two albums from the Len Bright Combo.

An explosive beat combo ruling over the mid-80's UK Medway scene, The Len Bright Combo paired Eric with the ramshackle rhythm section of Russ Wilkins and Bruce Band (The Milkshakes). Putting today's garage pretenders to shame, the combo recorded two albums of rough and ready pop blasts, with the shake and stomp never losing Eric's sharp wit, or melodic punch. These records contain many of his strongest songs, giving his iconic hit "Whole Wide World" a run for its money. Hardly in step with the UK fads of the day, the trio toured with their own PA system, blasting out performances like each one could be their last. Soon, it would be, as they parted ways after two underground albums released in the space of a year, leaving behind a collection of smoldering gems.

These reissues finally make the albums widely available and have been lovingly re-assembled, including detailed and entertaining liner notes from Eric himself, taking us back to those days, warts and all.

We`re very happy to announce a new EP by Bjorn Torske! The Kok EP was recorded around the same time of his previous album Kokning. Through series of studio sessions of experimenting with different sounds; instruments, objects of different textures, whose sounds were played within different spaces of various acoustics. The results were then edited into basic rhythm tracks which then were overdubbed with new series of recordings in similar manner. The tracks from these sessions involves more organic/ acoustic sound basics and less programmed patterns than Torske's previous albums.

This EP is also the last release in his small Kok triology (kok means to boil) which started with the beautiful and acclaimed Kokning album, followed by the 12” EP Oppkok (where Torske was remixed by DJ Harvey and Todd Terje) and it ends here with this 5 track EP (vinyl and digital). On this EP we find Torske in a more experimental mood where he his love for The Residents, Count Ossie, Moondog and This Heat is visible. The result is a darker and more psychedelic sound, still with the unmistakable Torske signature sound.

Bjørn Torske Biography: Bjørn Torske comes from Tromsø, a small area north of the artic circle and the capital of Norway’s electronic music scene. This town has bred great artists such as Mental Overdrive, Biosphere, and Royksopp. Torske was put in touch with SSR/Crammed Discs in Belgium through Geir Jenssen, and in 1991 he appeared on two separate 12" singles on the label. From there, Dutch label Djax-Up-Beats picked up on the talented young Norwegian, and in the following years Torske released a string of underground 12" singles on Djax-Up-Beats, as well as Reinforced Records, run by Mark & Dego of 4Hero.

The early 90’s found Torske in Bergen playing synthesizer in Biosphere’s live shows and touring with Geir Jenssen. After releasing an album on Djax-Up-Beats in 1995, Torske concentrated on DJing for a couple of years, releasing only one single on Per Martinsen’s Love OD label. His hiatus did have a noticeable impact, when “Fleet” became a club hit in Amsterdam and was pumped regularly by DJs Dimitri and Derrick May. Eventually Ferox’s Russ Gabriel was introduced to Torske’s music and an on-the-spot phone call led to the release of Nedi Myra in 1999.

Back in Norway, Röyksopp’s Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland followed Torske’s lead and moved from Tromsø to Bergen. New acts, clubs, and labels were emerging, transforming the otherwise sleepy university town on Norway’s west coast to the hippest place to be. Meanwhile, Torske had begun releasing singles through prestigious house label SVEK and on Bergen’s own Tellé Records and released “Disco Members” (2000, Tellé Records) and “Aerosoles” (2000,SVEK). In the same period, Torske produced his next album, Trøbbel (Tellé Records, 2001), as well as remixing his studio-partner’s Røyksopp`s first hit single “Eple”. Torske also toured Europe with Royksopp in the spring of 2002, but soon after he went underground for a few years. When Prins Thomas was asked: “What is the most desirable artist to sign, if money grew on trees? ” by Fact Magazine, his answer was: “if I could lure him out of his cave for a second, I wouldn't mind getting some new stuff from Bjorn Torske”. Thankfully, Smalltown Supersound managed to lure him out of that cave to return with the critically acclaimed Feil Knapp album in 2007.
