Artist: Oneohtrix Point Never Title: Garden of Delete 11.13.2015
Overview
WARPLP266/CD266
“Conjuring the sound of computers dreaming their own destiny, Lopatin proves that making music with this much heart actually takes a lot of processing power.” - Pitchfork Through an intricate unveiling of song snippets, film clips and a rabbit hole of internet postings involving a mysterious character named Ezra and world of music revolving around the band Kaoss Edge, Daniel Lopatin has revealed his latest release as Oneohtrix Point Never, Garden of Delete. After spending time on tour with Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden, Lopatin found himself gravitating towards the idea of creating a more rock inspired record. Building up from simple piano arrangements, the songs play with the idea of a 3 minute, “one-point-perspective” of a traditional rock song, but through the lense of Oneohtrix Point Never. Songs like “Ezra”, “Lift” and lead single “I Bite Through It” all hint at a verse-chorus-verse structure of a rock song, buried beneath layers of abstraction and manipulation one would expect from an OPN track, while the album’s magnificent 8 minute long centerpiece “Mutant Standard” shifts and changes, finding it’s closest rock relatives amongst prog and jam bands. Like Aphex Twin and the Prodigy before him, Lopatin manages to meld these seemingly distant sounds into a sound that is truly his own.
Format: Vinyl Boxlot: 12 Price: $24.99 Packaging: 2LP in printed inners with 8 page 12” size insert in gatefold sleeve.
Outside of his work as Oneohtrix Point Never, Lopatin founded Brooklyn-based Software Recording Company and has collaborated with a multitude of talented artists, directors, musicians and leading arts institutions; from Sofia Coppola to Ariel Kleiman, Antony & The Johnsons to Nine Inch Nails, Tate Modern to MoMA.
Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $14.99 Packaging: CD in jewel case with 24 page booklet.

JAMES FERRARO SKID ROW
RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 13, 2015 “Skid Row started as a collection of poems, it came first as words, then grew into becoming the lyrics of Skid Row.. I was writing about the state of the world around me, living on what feels like the brink of societal collapse while also seeing high excess everywhere.. all the sounds of the streets crept in, the blood and tears on the street, the echoing sirens in the early morning fog, soaked into the poetry and it became evident that LA is a hyper America. a place where violence (media and real life), excess and poverty, police exceptionalism & brutality, racism interact daily.. racism is a war on reason, so in my state of animosity I wrote Skid Row, I’m a disciple of the streets my spoken word and music on Skid Row mirror these conflicts that spill out over the western landscape like a painting of America frozen in a state of hyper real war.”– JAMES FERRARO Skid Row is the studio debut from James Ferraro due Nov 13-2015 it was recorded entirely in Los Angeles CA and is the follow up of 2013’s moody brutalist masterpiece NYC HELL 3AM musically Skid Row deconstructs and rebuilds a scrap yard of genres and aesthetics Thrash / Country / Modern Classical / Neo-Brutalism all shuttering under a metallic detritus overloaded like a skipping CD.

SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS 8 DAYS (OF HANUKKAH) b/ w W H AT DOES HANUKKAH MEAN T O YOU? DAP - 1 0 9 3 A/B Ever y November, just as we’ve got our r ubber spiders and Ronald Reagan masks packed back into our sticky plastic pumpkins, we find ourselves inundated by “Holiday Music.” It hovers in ever y elevator, floats through ever y grocer y store, and whines out of ever y receiver as we wait on hold with the cable company. Though there are dozens of standards in the canon – and we know ever y one of them all too well – they all seem to have one thing in common: they’re not Dap-Kings funk jams about Hanukkah! Ever wonder what it would sound like to hear Sharon Jones sing about latkes and Maccabees? Ever rip apar t your record shelves looking for that per fect mixtape song for your Jewish friend?
Ever get sick of the ONE
Adam Sandler song that’s supposed to miraculously last us eight days? Here is your answer: “8 Days” of soul packed carefully into 7 inches of wax. Happy Hanukkah!

'Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man’s land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Building slowly, but more upbeat than previous albums, many of these tracks have more in common with Kode9's recent singles from the last few years than they do with his two previous albums with collaborator The Spaceape, 'Memories of the Future' (2006) and 'Black Sun' (2012) Yet 'Nothing' is haunted both by The Spaceape's presence (he died in 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer), on ‘Third Ear Transmission’, a communiqué from a zone of digital immortality, and his absence, on 'Void’, whose spaces were originally intended for the vocalist, and ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, which closes the album with a 9 minute silence.

Okzharp (pronounced “o-k-zarp”) is a project that pivots around South African born London producer Gervase Gordon, who still maintains strong links to Capetown and Johannesburg and the creative work coming from there. ‘Dumela 113’ - translated as ‘Hello 113’ - is a suite of house mutations that feature the vocals of Manthe Ribane, an artist who runs the creative studio in Capetown called Studio113 with her two siblings, while her own work spans dance (she toured as a dancer with ‘Die Antwoord’), modelling, styling, film and photography. ‘Dumela 113’ started to take form when the South African director and photographer Chris Saunders introduced Manthe to Gervase. Chris and Gervase had started making a film together, called ‘Ghost Diamond’, which Manthe styled, choreographed, and starred, in. Consequently two tracks on this EP, ‘Fede’ and ‘Sizzr’, are also from the film’s soundtrack. ‘Dear Ribane’s lyrics are sung in the language of Tshwana and are about being a performer and working on shoots, and the complexities of understanding different kinds of beauty and being a vessel for other people's ideas of beauty, mocking a row of models with the line ‘”Ostrich 1, Ostrich 2, Ostrich 3, 4, 5, 6, 7”, The lyrics open out slowly over a sharp kick drum as a minimal keyboard creeps around Manthe’s poised vocals. ‘Sizzr’, delivered in English, is a positive mission statement about living in the moment, standing up for what you believe and not letting bad vibes get to you, sung with vocoder over bittersweet but positive keys, flipping from beatless to heads-down house. Inspired by a childhood game, ‘Fede’s lyrics play with the question 'How are you?' and all the different ways this can be interpreted, Manthe’s voice glistening with android fx over driving toms and deep bass. The EP finishes with ‘Glonet’, an instrumental of dubstep-indebted house with a wistful oriental melody that shifts gears between half and double speed.

“JUNGLE REVOLUTION IN DUB” Street Date:-11/13/2015 BD243 / BDCD243
“Dub was the soundtrack to my youth,” remembers Mikail Tafari aka Rebel MC aka Congo Natty. “ Considering the centrality of reggae in the very DNA of jungle music and considering the role of Jah Rastafari in Congo Natty’s life, it’s appropriate that his alreadyclassic 2013 album “Jungle Revolution” should now have been re-tooled by this UK legend and his associates to reflect an even broader swathe of that great heritage. Congo Natty has drawn on dub-soldiers new and old, UK-based and beyond, for this project. Digidub legends Dubkasm and the one and only Adrian Sherwood rub shoulders with Glasgow’s Mungos HiFi and Hungary’s DJ Madd, with the likes of Conscious Sounds, Vibronics and Jinx in Dub all bringing their own unique flavours. Drawing on over thirty years of British bass music, “Jungle Revolution in Dub” is a unique take on the dub album, somewhere between traditional dub, versioning and remixing, a kind of echo chamber of styles and sounds. They all share one thing in common, though, and you won’t be surprised to hear that’s bottom end. Let’s hope your subwoofers can handle it. HIGHLIGHTS LP includes download code CD includes 3 bonus tracks and introductions from Lee Scratch Perry, Scientist & Mala

Rachelle Garniez Who’s Counting STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 13 Who’s Counting, Rachelle Garniez’ sixth CD, is a collection of sweet, solemn, and irreverent musings, by turns philosophical and surreal, lighthearted and tragic. Produced by Dick Connette, it sounds distinctly American, by way of New York, stemming from jazz, folk, and soul, and rooted in the spirited interplay between Tim Lüntzel’s bass and Rachelle’s piano and accordion. Occasional horns and strings are added for atmosphere, and a guest appearance by roots-world band Hazmat Modine throws a swampy backporch seasoning into the mix. Instrumental interludes were created to open the ears and cleanse the palate - it’s an album conceived to be gathered whole. Rachelle is known as a “certified free spirit” (The New Yorker), and a “diva with a difference” (Billboard). The New York Times has called her songs and stream of consciousness performances “romantic, rhapsodic, and casually hilarious.”

Basement Hysteria is a new EP by PC Worship that explores the space between alternative rock and improvised fluidity. The title refers to the physical space in which the band records / practices and the mental space achieved by spending long nights under the influence of sleep-deprived hysteria, splitting time between long days of work and cultivating material to perform as a 3 piece band on an upcoming European tour. It’s a bi-product of spending hours in a basement playing music with no specific aesthetic agenda and bridging long form, unraveling “jams” with song ideas that enlist concepts most commonly employed by traditional eastern music, derivations of punk & jam bands, such as malleable form, squealing guitars and linear composition. This EP consists of 4 long form songs, recorded live to tape and enhanced with minimal overdubs (typically derived from social happenstance as the influence for the compositional direction), such as bongos with a coworker, sax with a wedding band member and operatic vocals with a partner, to create the socially displaced illusion of solidarity as it relates to the confined individual obsession of creative output and the cultivation of Basement Hysteria. “…frayed, pummeling avant-gardism…collaging decades of downtown New York dissonance while sludging into the future…” — Jenn Pelly, Pitchfork “PC Worship, the impossible-to-pin-down noise-rock collective from New York, will release a new EP on November 13th via Northern Spy Records.” — FADER premiere of “My Lens”

Coxsone’s Music is a stunning new 3-‐CD/two separate double LP (+ free download) collection featuring over two and half hours of early Jamaican proto-‐ska, rhythm and blues, jazz, rastafari and gospel music – charting the earliest recordings produced by Clement Dodd, in the years before he launched the mighty Studio One Records, brought together here for the first time ever. Clement Dodd’s Sir Coxsone The Downbeat Soundsystem ruled Kingston’s dancehalls during this era and these recordings strongly reflect the influences of American rhythm and blues and jump jazz on Jamaican music fans. By the time the new record company formed in Brentford Road, Kingston in 1963, the young Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd had already managed to release an incredible wealth of recordings by the talented musicians and artists on the island of Jamaica and this collection reflects just that: Featuring Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Derrick Harriott, Owen Gray, Clancy Eccles, Count Ossie, Monty Alexander, The Blues Busters, Ernest Ranglin, Rico Rodriguez and many, many more all captured here in their formative early years. Before Studio One, Clement Dodd released this music on a variety of his early record labels such as Worldisc, All Stars, Coxsone, D Darling (named after Coxsone’s mother, who received a production credit on the label), Muzik City (named after Dodd’s record store on East Queen’s Street), Port O Jam, Supreme and Sensational. Sleevenotes to this collection are by Studio One authority Rob Chapman, author of the Never Grow Old and Downbeat Special books cataloguing the many recordings of the label.

HIEROGLYPHIC BEING THE ACID DOCUMENTS
Street Date: 13th November 2015 No shipments outside of North America
Soul Jazz Records launches its new electronic music imprint Sounds of the Universe division with the first of two new albums by Hieroglyphic Being.
Current Wire magazine front cover artist Hieroglyphic Being’s debut album for the new label – The Acid Documents – is an album made up of tracks first released last year only ever available in a bespoke edition of 100 copies – in the form of a homemade CD-‐R – made exclusively for the Sounds of the Universe record store.
Tracklist A 1. Culdees (5.08) 2. Dualism (8.06) 3. Fabian Society (6.59) B 1. Gematria (6.10) 2. Jacobites Order (6.49) C 1. Aurum Solis (8.53) 2. E Clampus Vitus (7.09) D 1. Hollow Earth (8.03) 2. llluminates Of Thaneteros (6.33) 3. Burlesque Degrees (7.03)
This album is now released officially as a one-‐off edition of 1000 copies on coloured double vinyl, CD and digital, fully remastered with artwork by Japanese artist 2Yang. Hieroglyphic Being, aka Jamal Moss – who features on the front cover of Wire magazine’s current issue – is a DJ/composer/sound artist who makes pioneering, experimental, boundary-‐pushing Afro-‐futurist electronic music. Born and based in Chicago, Moss’s music embodies two of the cultural foundation blocks of the city’s musical lineage: that of Chicago’s original Acid House sound (c. 1986), of Frankie Knuckles, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson et al, alongside a rigorous experimental sound searching that taps into the cosmic musical lineage of pioneering artist Sun Ra whose Arkestra landed and was based in the city from 1946-‐61. This association with Sun Ra is by no means hypothetical, having just been in the studio with the Arkestra leader Marshall Allen and a host of free jazz players for the album Hieroglyphic Being & JITU Ahn-‐Sahm-‐ Buhl’s ‘We Are Not The First.’ Similarly his relationship to Chicago’s original acid house pioneers of the late 80s is no hyperbole. Originally mentored by artist/producers Adonis and Steve Pointdexter, Moss also now runs his own Mathematics label which has released music by foundation acid house pioneers Lil’ Louis, Adonis and many others. To quote Moss, ‘I am the last of the line of producers directly influenced by Ron Hardy (the pioneering acid house DJ) at the Music Box.’ Moss grew up in the south side of Chicago. After being thrown out of the home of his adoptive parents, he then spent three years homeless living on the streets of Chicago, living a nocturnal existence as a gigolo in Chicago’s alternative clubs. He began his career as a DJ at the pioneering Liquid Love parties at Chi-‐town’s legendary Power House (home of Ron Hardy’s Music Box) around 1989.
What clearly defines Moss’s music is that while sometimes pushing the limits of sound to an ear-‐splitting dimension of experimentation and DIY-‐electronics, the music is always clearly a progression of the lineage of black music. In the words of fellow Chicagoans, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, it is simply ‘Great Black Music.’ And yet in this uniquely defined sound, Moss somehow manages to draw into this world elements of industrial music, German electronic music (Cluster, Harmonia etc), Detroit’s sci-‐fi techno artists (Atkins, Saunderson, Craig) and more. (The second Hieroglyphic Being album on the new label, under his moniker Africans with Mainframes, will be released on Soul Jazz Records’ Sounds of the Universe in January 2016.)

The album was made between 2012 - 2015 in Oslo he sites artists like Giacinto Scelsi, Arvo Pärt, Gescom/AE, Brian Eno and Norwegian compatriot Biosphere as inspiration. “Gode” has a dual meaning in Norwegian. It’s a Middle English word that gave us the modern English word “Goad” (meaning to provoke or annoy). On the one hand it literally means “cattle prod”, a farming tool used to round up cattle. But it also came to mean “a right or privilege” as the cattle prod came to symbolize the indentured labor of the Norwegian rural working class. The land owning aristocrats would exploit the people as if they were so much livestock. Like a stark black & white film, the record is a meditation on the darker days of Norway’s past, before the country discovered its oil wealth. From 1900 – 1939 it was one of Europe’s poorest countries, beset by illness and starvation even. Rural poor depended completely on their families and had more children to work the land. Only the privileged could afford to make art, and Bratten thinks of the void all the music and art from the poorest families that was lost. “Gode” is a hymn to those people. If it sounds like Bratten is something of a natural storyteller, it might be connect to his other work. After dropping out of music college in his teens, he got a job as a sound technician at Oslo’s leading contemporary performing arts theatre, Black Box Theatre. With his natural ability, it wasn’t long before he went from sound tech to composing music for leading contemporary theatre groups, all by the age of 21. He released his debut album “Be A Man You Ant” on Full Pupp label in 2013 and quickly followedup with the club hit “Trommer Og Bass” on Berlin's Correspondant label. Bratten then signed to Smalltown Supersound who in June 2015 released the 6-track mini-album “Math Ilium Ion”. “Gode” is Bratten giving free rein to his imagination and further deepening his unique musical practice. His previous work was made with synthesizers, drum machines and computers but this album is recorded through tape machines, layered with field recordings, heavily modified piano, string arrangements and even vocals (amongst others Susanne Sundfør).

CERTAIN CREATURES VIPASSANĀ November 13, 2015 Certain Creatures (born Oliver Chapoy) wrestles with the three marks of existence - impermanence, suffering and realisation of the non-self - throughout Vipassana, his debut album onStyles Upon Styles . Oliver’s resumé extends from the early 90’s when he was a pivotal player in Miami’s hardcore scene by way of his band,Shai Hulud , before moving into post-rock territory (Saxon Shore ) and electronic pop (Warm Ghost ). Since departing from Warm Ghost, however, Oliver has focused on electronics in a solo environment: our Bangers & Ash 12” series, providing a menacing slap of dystopian techno w/ guest vocals fromStuart Argabright . His collaboration with Stuart led to the most prominent credit in Oliver’s production career: the opportunity to produce Black Rain’s Dark Pool(Blackest Ever Black), heralded as Black Rain’s comeback proper, provided the best scope of Oliver’s production and compositional talent to date. With Vipassana, Oliver offers a searing discourse on the harrowing beauty of acknowledging, confronting and transcending oneself. The arc of the album is personal, conveyed to great effect through the use of Oliver’s own voice in standouts,“Colour Me In” and “Nothing Changes”, the former a deep trip through vocoded psychosis, the latter a noir pop odyssey akin to The Fragile’s Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never,Tim Hecker,Antony) lends his revered mixing acumen to Vipassana, casting shadows across haunting features fromBonnie Baxter (ShadowBox / Kill Alters ) and Jon Philpot ( Bear in Heaven ) on “The Suffering Seas” and “In Safety of Cold Light,” respectively. These collaborative efforts propel Vipassanato heights beyond the traditional techno album.Years of experiencing and participating in club culture have provided the groundwork forVipassana, but it’s his compositional prowess that carries Certain Creatures’ debut album beyond the horde. NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA
EXPORTABLE TO JAPAN Nearly a year in the making, and including a cast of 30 musicians, J.R. Robinson delivers his towering third album as Wrekmeister Harmonies entitled Night of Your Ascension. As with previous Wrekmeister albums, the ensemble is made up of an all-star cast of musicians from the metal, new music and rock communities. Musicians include Lee Buford and Chip King from The Body, Alexander Hacke (Einsturzende Neubauten), Cooper Crain (Cave), Marissa Nadler, Mary Lattimore, Olivia Block, Eric Chaleff (Bloodiest), Dylan O’Toole and Ron DeFries of Indian, Bruce Lamont, Sanford Parker (Twilight), Mark Solotroff (Anatomy of Habit), Solomon Lee Walker, Chris Brokow (Come), and Jaime Fennelly (Mind Over Mirrors). Robinson has long been fascinated with those whose habits or actions have set them beyond the reach of redemption. Through his video art and his music, Robinson continues to explore humanity’s darkest impulses and society’s response to them. The death of Father John Goeghan and the life of Don Carlo Gesualdo were starting points for the two compositions on his new album. Robinson has long been pre-occupied with society’s unwanted, observing the horror of their acts while trying to identify with their conflict. Why do we gawk at those ravaged by violence or mental illness? Why do we turn a blind eye to the unspeakable barbarity committed by “civilized” nations? Night of Your Ascension is a commentary on our own fascination with bloodlust and our seemingly insatiable appetite for lurid depictions of depravity. The music on Night of Your Ascension is as hauntingly beautiful as it is brutal, the questions it provokes are weighty.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD - LITANY CD/2LP Dead To A Dying World return with their long-awaited sophomore effort, a defining opus entitled Litany. This follow-up to their 2011 self-titled debut is an endeavor that emboldens the Dallas, TX septet’s tremendous creative spirit. Litany is increasingly ambitious with each of its six triumphant musical movements, demanding hope and despair in its deliberate parade of the sours of humanity. This musical ensemble has crafted an aural landscape that thrives somewhere between apocalyptic doom, blackened crust, and dark post-rock. Their compositional skill is wonderful to behold as their works flow seamlessly from solemn string arrangement into tremendous dooming resolution.

‘La Compilation’ celebrates the titular NYC Lower East Side Italian restaurant and party. Translated literally as ‘Eat Me’, over it’s six years of existence it was a legendary hang out for the city’s underground cognoscenti like DJ Harvey, Tim Sweeney or Eric Duncan, as well as serving up a mean seafood Risotto Alla Campagnola. When owner and DJ Gianfranco Costa approached Golf Channel’s Phil South with the idea of releasing commemorative edits and a compilation album to capture the vibe, he jumped at the chance. First, they released 3 Mangiami Edit 12”s in 2014, and now the full comp. The album features new tracks from regulars Totes Preesh (Sean Marquand and Patrick Wood from The Phenomenal Handclap Band), Dedication (Felix Dickinson’s Japanese band project), familiar downtown presence Nick Chacona aided on vocals by Cole Odin Berggren. Cole is a DJ, singer and multi instrumentalist from San Francisco, previously in rock band Bobbie Marie and psychedelic band Ownership, his new project is a solo outing of psychedelic rock-inspired electronic music called Song Rider. Golf Channel’s own The Loose Control Band (West Coast legends DJ Spun & Jonah Sharp of Spacetime Continuum). Gianfranco himself turns vocalist on two new productions, one from Throne of Blood’s Populette and another from Alex From Tokyo And Bing Ji Ling. Alongside these are two long overdue reissues of lost classics by Thugfucker and Will Burnett’s Grackle alias. Unofficial musical co director / promoter Jason Kincade was affectionately known as “The Mayor” of the restaurant. He writes: “From 2006 until its lamented closing in 2012 Mangiami was the downtown clubhouse for a very New York cross-section of DJs, artists, musicians, fashion people, music obsessives and assorted layabouts. On any given night of the week you knew that within an hour of sitting down at the bar any number of your friends would soon appear, and be entertained by the massively charming owner, Gianfranco. Then there were the DJ nights. Every Monday (and later Wednesday) from after work until far too late on a weeknight pretty much a who’s who of local heroes and international superstars would play on the rickety old Technics sat on the bar, with mayhem and general debauchery to follow. It wouldn’t be a surprise to come in one night and find DJ Harvey at a table with Tim Sweeney next to Alex from Tokyo and Bing Ji Ling with Eric Duncan manning the decks and 100 people crowded into the tiny space and spilling out into the street. Before things reached a climactic close, one of many highpoints was the night Tony Humphries asked to play there. The beauty of how full circle things had come was not lost on Costa and South and when the time came, they asked Tony to mix the CD part of the compilation. His expert long blends and trademark smooth style will be familiar to all those who caught the man back in the day either via his Kiss FM mastermixes or his legendary Zanzibar residency. Here he gets a whole new set of toys to play with, and delivers a master class in sequencing, mood building, and the fine art of Deejaying. “The music is a lovely reflection of how the nights went down there, just happy, good time stuff – whether it’s the more relaxed or the more banging end of the spectrum – both are represented.” says Golf Channel’s Phil South. The cover of the gatefold vinyl is a collage of black and white photos Gianfranco took over the life of the restaurant which showcase the good natured vibe of the establishment – to say the least.

“After years of producing music, it was some old DAT recordings from my youth that were to kick start Prequel Tapes. Listening to those recordings was like a flight back into the past. Understanding these recordings was to realise why I do what I am doing. Again a circle is closing. I find it´s very enjoyable to open and close all those circles. Time is relative.

L’Onde Souterraine is a collection of live electro-acoustic improvisations by Lea Bertucci on Bass Clarinet and Leila Bordreuil on Cello. Recorded in 2013 on two-inch magnetic tape in a large church hall, L’Onde Souterraine uses feedback to explore the possibilities of sound distortion through space. The duo weaves natural acoustic phenomena with extended techniques to create dark music that resists conventional labels and transcends traditional song structure. Lea Bertucci and Leila Bordreuil are an electro-acoustic Bass Clarinet and Cello duo. Since 2013, their collaboration has generated a radical re-imagining of timbre through the use of extended technique, amplification, and minimal electronic processing. L’Onde Souterraine, recorded in a church hall in Hudson, New York, is their debut album. Lea Bertucci is a composer, improviser, and organizer working with installation, sound, and performance. As an instrumentalist, she focuses on the electro-acoustic preparation of the Bass Clarinet using speaker feedback. Recent projects include site-specific compositions for electronics and instruments, multichannel sound installations, and music concrete collage. Lea is currently an ISSUE Project Room Artist-in-Residence and a New Works Fellow at Harvestworks. She was awarded commissions from Roulette in 2008 and 2012. She has performed and exhibited at Smack Mellon, the Queens Museum of Art, the Kitchen, Anthology Film Archives, Caramoor, the Bronx Museum of Art, St. Mark’s Church, Experimental Intermedia, and the High Zero Festival, among many others. Lea is also active as a curator, organizing both large-scale, multichannel performances of experimental music as well as underground events. Leila Bordreuil is a Brooklyn-based cellist, composer, and sound artist from France. Her cello improvisations challenge conventional practice, producing textural variations from a collage of phantom overtones and pitched utterances. Through a unique and original vocabulary of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, she transforms her instrument into an abstract resonant body. Her composed works draw from a similar texture-based musical aesthetic while developing relationships between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound. Since moving to Brooklyn in 2012, Leila has maintained an active concert schedule playing with Marina Rosenfeld, Anthony Coleman, Tom Chiu (Flux Quartet), Chris Corsano, Eli Keszler, Richard Teitlebaum (Musica Elettronica Viva), Weasel Walter, Richard Garet, and Michael Foster, among many others. She has performed at the Whitney Museum, Roulette, Issue Project Room, The Kitchen, and the Performa Biennale. Like Lea, Leila is also a current New Works Fellow at Harvest Works, where she is building a five-string cello that serves as an interface for multichannel amplification and video projection through software manipulation. She has also been composer-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (2013), and as a commissioned composer for the American Symphony Orchestra (2013).

Lara Price
I Mean Business Lara Price was born in the war torn country of Vietnam in 1975. Abandoned at birth, Lara became a part of the controversial Operation Baby Lift, the mass evacuation of orphans from South Vietnam to the United States. Her journey to her new home was nothing short of a miracle, as 90 percent of the orphaned babies did not survive. Lara Price is a survivor–with an indisputable right to sing the blues! Lara arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997 to pursue her dream of singing in a band. With a strikingly soulful voice, eclectic tastes, and skills on multiple instruments, Lara applied herself to many musical ventures. She toured across the United States and China, and produced, cowrote and released 5 genre-spanning CD’s, the most recent in 2010. In the ensuing years Lara immersed herself in the Bay Area music scene, met blues/soul icons Ann Peebles and Candi Staton, and began to find her musical focus. Particularly drawn to songs with a 60’s soul blues vibe, especially those with great backup singers, she began to envision her next album. She recruited musicians Jim Pugh (Robert Cray Band), Chris Cain, and fellow VizzTone label-mates Mighty Mike Schermer (Marcia Ball) and Laura Chavez (who plays with Lara frequently when she’s not touring with Candye Kane), as well as the Sweet Nectar backup singers, and wrote, co-wrote and collected songs for the new album. Lara went into acclaimed producer Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studio and proceeded to lay down a gorgeous, career-defining album, meaningfully titled I MEAN BUSINESS.

Described by nudie suitors near and far as "disturbingly addictive" and "soul stirring," the EP is a collection of princess robot love songs, made of dreamy loops of voice, violin, and synthesizers. Recorded at Heartwood studios, a converted saw-sharpening factory, for Ehse Records, a converted neurologist, "Summer Fun" features five new songs from two queens of experimental pop.

The brainchild of German songwriter, singer and rhythm guitarist Silvi Wersing, Chorusgirl blend the shimmering dreaminess of 4AD bands like Lush, the noir pop of The Cure and the bittersweet electricity of The Breeders across 10 songs that sparkle with melody and pop nous but are stealthily subverted by something darker. Dig beneath the surface of the perfect pop songs on Chorusgirl and you’ll find heavy lyrics about saying goodbye, giving up, grief, alienation and loneliness. It’s all deliberately coded though, shrouded in the metaphysical poetry that Silvi does so well. With their debut album Chorusgirl breathe new life into guitar pop, reinvigorating the genre with fresh hooks and sharp-edged songs full of heartache, anger and grit. 1. Oh To Be A Defector 2. USA Nails brings together members and ex-members of Oceansize, Hawk Eyes, Kong, Future of the Left, Silent Front and Dead Arms. Opting for a more stripped back approach to their other outfits, Nails adopt a strict policy to not overthink their music. Choosing raw energy, intensity and mood over technical expression. Just under a year since the release of their first LP ‘Sonic Moist’, the band return with their latest instalment of brash noise-rock-punk-psych: 'No Pleasure'. The album features 11 furious tracks that sit comfortably among the work of contemporaries like Pissed Jeans, Destruction Unit and Institute. The Silence are a storm that has been brewing across Japan for over a year — and now that system is breaking into the skies of the rest of the world! Their self-titled debut of this past spring was simply a preamble to the fluid and formidable electro-acoustic interplay that has quickly evolved since then. The first record is of a song-based nature, rendered with careful beauty familiar to longtime listeners of Masaki Batoh and Ghost; a sound that turned on occasion into greater journeys. Hark The Silence takes that notion and runs with it in a powerfully jamming album containing all the musical elements that define The Silence in flowing and transcendent performance, all of it recorded on 24-track analogue tape, a process which brings their musical and spatial qualities into dynamic balance. Everything in the universe accessible to The Silence may be found in the “Ancient Wind” trilogy that fills side one of Hark The Silence. From the depths of space rolls washes of gong, through which a terse, minimal bassline comes marching. Rattles of prepared piano spark and pass through the frame, blown over with the celestial omnipotence of a flute. The now-sensuous groove is underscored with luxuriant stereophonic drums rolling across the speakers. Representing the state of nature from which all music as well as The Silence has to come, “Ancient Wind” Part 1 ceases to exist, and explodes into a furious Bo-Diddley beat for Part 2, a chant replete with acid-rock guitar solos, an encompassing saxophone testament and an echo-unit driven drum breakdown. Part 3 of “Ancient Wind” resumes the chant in the mode of “Gangamanag” (from Ghost’s Hypnotic Underworld opus) and extends the fury of the progression in 7/8 to include a dazzling organ solo over unending volcanic eruption. As the swirling mass subsides, a few rusty blue notes from an acoustic guitar are sounded over the encroaching Silence. Showing in one side that The Silence are capable of EVERYTHING. But there are three more sides during which The Silence continue to travel through the universe that “Ancient Wind” has blown open. Side two features two jams of a different color. Recorded completely live, “Ornament” continues with resonant guitar acoustics from the fading embers of side one, starting with a gentle mode, and sung by Batoh in their native tongue, before the song ascends to explorations in space with music. “DEX #1” continues the ride, a heavy jam in 4/4 dedicated to Dexter Gordon with loads of texture from keyboards and saxophone that make for very compelling physical listening. Do you now realize that Hark The Silence is truly an experience and a trip that you have to take yourself? We can’t describe it ALL for you, but we will that the second half of the album contains an exquisite and intense rock arrangement of Damon and Naomi with Batoh’s tremendous singing atop the pile-driving power of The Silence in full swing, plus several other awe-inspiring encounters in live performance, minimal jamming, poetry, baritone-sax breath and group-think at its best. As the album closes with the clarion call of “Fireball,” the graveyard of all history traversed by The Silence is illuminated by the dead’s spirit burning in the air — a great and profoundly jarring moment. Hark The Silence is a composite of such moments, an album that travels enormous distances and captures live energies in astonishing studio sounds. The Silence are clearly one of the most powerful groups playing today ANYWHERE in the world — Hark The Silence should provoke audiences everywhere to demand The Silence for themselves!

NUNO CANAVARRO PLUX QUBA DC639 LP LIST PRICE: $20.98 STREET DATE: NOVEMBER 20, 2015 NO EXPORT TO EUROPE, ELSEWHERE IT IS OKAY
TITLED TRACKS ( EIGHT OTHERS ARE UNTITLED ) ALSEE O FUNDO ESCURO DE ALSEE WASK WOLFIE CRIMINE ULTRAMARINA BRUMA CAVE
Nuno Canavarro’s Plux Quba hails from three decades in the past, yet the simple profile of it’s abstract/ambient/cutup collage makes it a record that sits quite comfortably in our IDM-informed future. In 1988, Plux Quba was a primal dark horse in the world of pants-forward electronic music — an obscurity issued with little explanation from the laid-back west coast of Europe: Portugal, of all places! — though the casual listener could hardly know that from an examination of the LP jacket. The vanguard of electronics in late-80s Europe was being pushed by organizations like Nurse With Wound, The Hafler Trio, HNAS – and yet, when Christoph Heemann came across this recording, it struck his ears and the ears of fellow listeners like nothing before. Plux Quba was handed around between the principles of the early 90s A-Musik scene: Jan St. Werner, C-Schulz, Frank Dommert, Georg Odijk, plus interested fellow travelers like Jim O’Rourke, to the intense curiosity of all. To ears that were already saturated with all things kraut, the dark corners of prog and the frontline of experimental and improvised music, it proved elusive. Not simply in how it sounded and how that sound was achieved, but in where it was coming from — like later Robert Ashley at times; certain stretches of melody recalled some of Eno’s ambient pieces – but mostly, it was a completely alien soundscape! And who was it? Was the band called Plux Quba? The record? The label? These sorts of mysteries are at the heart of records that require close listening and re-listening. As it was absorbed, it grew to be an influence on the Köln sound — Mouse On Mars, Lithops, and Heemann’s many and varied projects — as well as O’Rourke, Fennesz and many others. Music and sound of this nature have for many years been made available by bands like Autechre, labels like Mille Plateaux — but for the first ten years of its existence, Plux Quba was rarely heard. O’Rourke reissued it as the first record on his Moikai label in 1998, and it had a good run through around 2005 before the last of the print parts were filled. It’s almost a decade since Plux Quba was available, which is way too long considering that we live in an era where it is NECESSARY to have an LP of this on hand for your contemporary listening distractions. And so, Drag City has stepped in to reissue the Moikai reissue of Nuno Canavarro’s classic Plux Quba.
