Hark!A New Nick Lowe Record. . .

Holiday Themed For Your Convenience! When Nick Lowe was approached by his record label about making a Christmas album, his reaction wasn't exactly one of comfort and joy. “It was more disquiet and alarm, accompanied by feelings of 'Do they really think I would wish to sully my good name on this tawdry and vulgar commercialism?'” Lowe says with a laugh. “But that feeling lasted about thirty-six and a half seconds, before I came to and thought, 'Vulgar, tawdry commercialism? Yes, please, when do we start?' Seriously, I thought, 'Wait a minute, this could be really good fun.'” And the joys of Christmas infuse the dozen songs on Quality Street: A Seasonal Selection For All The Family (the title is a nod to a famous UK manufacturer of holiday sweets, while the Wes Anderson-ish cover image was conceived by Lowe's wife, designer Peta Waddington).

As Lowe assembled his band and began thinking about how to add a new twist to the seasonal songbook, he made one rule. “We tried to make it a sleigh bell-free zone,” he says. “Really, what we wanted to do first was find songs either which people hadn't heard millions of times before, but which were really good songs that we could get our teeth into and change them around,” Lowe continues. “Or if we were going to cover songs that were well-known, we wanted to do ones that we could put a brand new suit of clothes on. “The third option, of course, was to write some of our own, which is a bit of a taller order. You can knock out some jingle bell thing, but that's not what we were trying to do. We were aiming for something which had a bit of quality to it. It all sounds straightforward and easy, but it was a lot harder to get the material together than you might think.” The result is indeed a dream to listen to - a twinkling blend of traditional hymns, forgotten gems and Lowe originals that conjure up all the nostalgia, good cheer and warmth of the season. From the opening giddy-up of a rockabilly-charged “Children Go Where I Send Thee” and the comfy cozy hush of “Christmas Can't Be Far Away,” the record deftly slaloms through such highlights as the beatnik bop of “Hooves on the Roof” (written especially for the project by Ron Sexsmith), Roger Miller's wistful classic “Old Toy Trains” and a New Orleans-style “Silent Night” before wrapping up with a ska-flavored take on Wizzard's 70s-era glam hit “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day.” But at the heart of Quality Street are two Lowe songs surely destined to become future seasonal standards. “Christmas at the Airport” is a playful take on the travel tie-ups we've all experienced, complete with Ray Conniff-style backgrounds punctuated by terminal p.a. voiceovers. Meanwhile, the stunning “I Was Born In Bethlehem” unfolds as an inventive retelling of the nativity. Lowe says, “It's this amazing story that everyone knows, but I was trying to write it as if you'd met Jesus on a plane, and he just started chatting away about that night. I tried to make it very conversational and sort of matter of fact.” Anyone who likes their Christmas soundtracks with plenty of heart and humor, and a sprinkle of understated charm, will enjoy Quality Street for the newly minted classic that it is. MINOR ALPS GET THERE

bark139 CD / LP+MP3

STREET DATE: OCTOBER 29, 2013 “The pairing brings out the softer side Nada Surf sometimes delved into while reaching for something new entirely.” - NPR “Intricate and ambitious and very lovely.” - Stereogrum

Over the last two decades, both Juliana Hatfield and Matthew Caws have carved out long-lasting – and strikingly independent – careers within a dependably fickle music business, Caws with his now 20-year-old New York City group Nada Surf, and Hatfield with the Boston-reared Blake Babies, the Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls, as well as a number of releases under her own name. They first worked together in 2008 when he added vocals to the song ‘Such a Beautiful Girl’ from her album How to Walk Away. She quickly returned the favor, singing on the Nada Surf b-side ‘I Wanna Take You Home’.

It was clear from these brief encounters that their voices and sensibilities are almost preternaturally harmonious – or, more accurately (as illustrated throughout their new album Get There, recorded under the name Minor Alps), it can be difficult at times to tell who's singing, or to know where one’s ideas might end and the other’s begin. As Hatfield declares, “In certain ranges, the tones of our voices are so similar I can’t tell which is which. I haven’t experienced that with any other singer.” It’s as if they were always meant to perform together, and the pair has, luckily for us, finally realized it.

Southern Culture on the Skids is proud to celebrate their 30-year anniversary with the release of Dig This — the 2013 re-recording of the band’s 1993 album Ditch Digging. Dig This features the same band — Mary Huff on bass and vocals, Dave Hartman on drums, and Rick Miller on guitar and vocals — but the 13 original songs the band recorded over 20 years ago have been updated musically to reflect where the trio is NOW! Dig This is Americana from the wrong side of the tracks and SCOTS’ countrified surf-psych-swamp-pop has never sounded better! “These new versions take off where the old ones left off, and they sound terrific. I think old fans and new are gonna DIG THIS album!” - Rick Miller ATTENTION KARAOKE LOVERS!!! Ever since John Talabot released his debut single ‘My Old School’ for Permanent Vacation in 2009 he has been on an ever-increasing rise as both a producer and a DJ – and as a talent you simply cannot ignore. If his debut introduced the world to his style, his follow-up ‘Sunshine’ was the track that made people really sit up and take notice. Support and praise came in from the likes of James Murphy, Âme and Jamie xx and the natural evolution of awareness was well on its way for the native Catalan. But, it wasn’t until February 2012 that ‘exciting potential’ truly became ‘serious talent’ with the release of his debut LP ‘ƒIN’ for Permanent Vacation. An album that Rough Trade listed at number 2 in their ‘Albums of the Year’ chart, and the Guardian gave 4*’s to, describing it as, “full of incredible tension-releasing moments… Talabot has arguably the greatest sense of build-and-release in dance music since prime Booka Shade.” Since the release of ‘ƒIN’ last year, Talabot has toured the world supporting The xx live, built up his Hivern Discs label into a must-check stable of creativity and blown away dancefloors from the Boiler Room to SXSW as a DJ. He is widely regarded as one of the most exciting artists in electronic music today. His next major LP project is the DJ-Kicks mix compilation for !K7 that will be released in September 2013. The compilation will feature a single exclusively written for DJ Kicks, as well as two never before heard collaborations with top names. Music fans get ready. KEY POINTS • • • • • • • •

INFORMATION:

'It was an unstable period. Mercury is the barometer. Songs of innocence and experience, death and rebirth. The grey matter in between duality and the duality of grey matter. Christmas, changeling, nostalgia, time machines, stigmata'. Miracle's debut album is a collaboration between two artists with a rich history in music you wouldn't immediately associate with Mercury. Daniel O'Sullivan has played and sung in bands such as Ulver, Mothlite, Grumbling Fur and Guapo, while Steve Moore has recorded as half of the Italian soundtrack inspired synth band Zombi, and on dance labels such as Kompakt and more recently L.I.E.S. In fact it was on a Guapo/Zombi tour in 2006 they first met, with the music starting to trickle out slowly around 2010. Initially the music was intended as an instrumental dance project, however the project started to take on a life of its own when Daniel started to add vocals and lyrics. TRACK LISTING:

01 Good Love 02 Something Is Wrong 03 Automatic And Invisible 04 Falling Into The Night 05 Neverending Arc 06 Mercury 07 Breathless 08 Wild Nights 09 Organon • Committed advertising spend. • Video for the Mercury • Project from Steeve Moore and Daniel O’ Sullivan • Vinyl includes MP3 download code

The music on Mercury is definitely cosmic, but not oversimplified or facile, oddly both men say that an almost subliminal influence was the 1987 Joel Schumacher film 'The Lost Boys'. There are anthemic power ballads on there but it also has an unstable tension and is rich in atmosphere, with songs at times pulling on Steve Moore's love for the grainy fog of Italian horror soundtracks, plus the lyrics have an almost occult introspection, troubled, elliptical sentiments animated by choral rounds and harmonies. Maybe it was the length of time it took to make, but each song sounds like a chapter, with a unique mood. The collage begins with the tender and devotional 'Good Love', a canticle through the looking glass. A euphoric twist in theme beckons synthpop fireworks with 'Something Is Wrong', while 'Automatic And Visible' channels 80's synth funk sass into something stranger. 'Falling Into The Night' is pure 80's soundtrack pop, while 'Neverending Arc' drops away into shadowy territory, pumping arpeggios and tense, airy synths. The mid point of the album is the sleepless, late night/early morning bliss of 'Mercury', crossing huge, beautiful chords with scattershot beats and rising tones, Daniel's stream of imagery pouring out over the top. 'Breathless' takes the mood downwards again, like an ugly mutation between Metallica and early Prince, with a sense of exhaustion to match. 'Wild Nights' finds its sense of optimism and resolve. The final drift is towards a warm resolution and spiritual uplift, with 'Organon' a blissful drone over elegant beats, moog, bells and chanting, where all the tension dissolves into deep

Reverend Horton Heat

We Three Kings: Christmas Favorites

NATIONAL release date LP: 10.29.13 Do you prefer your Christmas with "sawdust on the floor and blood in its mouth?" (New Music Express) If so, don't bother writing to Santa. Sure, he's a swell guy, but when it comes to "guitars so wild they must have been miked, mixed, and produced in the fiery depths of Hell" (Rolling Stone), St. Nick's axe-handlin' chops ain't what they used to be. But don't fret, this year everybody's favorite psychobilly clergyman Reverend Horton Heat has his own bag of treats for all the goodly little kats and kittens! We Three Kings has the holiday licks and tricks you've come to expect from the jolly ol' Rev. as he blazes through 12 classics and an original ("Santa on the Roof"). From "Frosty the Snowman" to "Winter Wonderland," Father Christmas is getting an IV of slapback and gin! So, raise a glass of nog and try to act nice... the Rev's making his list! What the press says: “. . .it's nice to hear "Jingle Bells" getting the slapback bass and reverb twang it's always needed.” -AV Club “this is the perfect gift.” -The Examiner “We Three Kings is a fun, lively addition to anyone’s holiday set list.” -Trouser Track Listing: 01. BOBAN & MARKO MARKOVIć ORCHESTRA

GIPSY MANIFESTO

Growing from balkan to world champions, Boban and Marko release their Gipsy Manifesto, a musical call for change and a sonic striving for higher truth, drafted and crafted in the school of life. Ancient melodies that have worked their way down the silk road to the beaches of the Adriatic Sea, played on the instruments of 19th-century Czech Military Bands against the throbbing rhythms that have driven the wild dances of innumerable generations‘ worth of Roma celebrations - this is Balkan Brass Band music. The saturation of multicultural elements that has created this music, though, is far from a completed process. In the hands of Boban and Marko Marković, the evolution is ongoing. These musical visionaries, a virtuosic father and his prodigious son, are active reinterpreters of this hallowed tradition. Their brand of Brass Band music is contemporary and big-city-ready, while staying well-rooted in the rural traditions that made it. The aesthetic of the band draws ready comparisons to horn-drenched funk music, New Orleans brass band ensembles, and classic Jamaican ska, but the rhythms and the melodies: these are distinctly Balkan. “Having dominated the Balkan brass world in the 20th century, Boban and Marko have now chosen to do no less than redefine the genre. There isn‘t a band on the planet that can touch them.“ Frank London “Balkan music is demanding to play: fast, precise and rhythmically complex. These guys are talented enough, and brave enough, to slip in elements of jazz, funk or Latin music with ease.“ Banning Eyre - npr.org

All Saints Reissues Overview Successor-in-interest to Brian Eno’s Opal imprint, All Saints, which was established in 1991 by Eno and his long time compatriot Dominic Norman-Taylor, released several classic Eno albums in the 90s, as well as works from iconic musicians and peers he has worked with over the years. The roster includes legends such as John Cale, Harold Budd, Laraaji, Roger Eno and Jon Hassell in addition to Brian Eno himself. Brian’s current label Warp Records has licensed the catalog, and will be working with Redeye, press and radio teams to expand the All Saints profile and continue their decades-long work with seminal artists, high end audio and beautiful packaging. Most all of these releases have been out of print and very difficult to find for years. These new releases look at the catalogue from a completely fresh angle, with career-spanning retrospectives for some of the artists (featuring additional licensed material), vinyl re-presses of rare albums, remixes, and carefully curated boxsets. The first batch of releases will be coming out in October and November this year, focussing on Laraaji, Roger Eno and Harold Budd, with 2014 seeing releases from Jon Hassel, John Cale, Brian Eno and more. For each artist a collection of their work as been put together for the first time alongside reissues of original albums, and Warp have consulted with them extensively about each release. They will be available to help promote the releases with interviews and features, as well as several live events being planned around the world.

In a few short years Laurel Halo has demonstrated an unnerving ability to question established idioms in electronic music. Throughout her body of work the Michigan-born producer has expressed musical representations of merged dualities; spirituality in the inorganic, space in the claustrophobic, hope in dread. As a result there's something uncanny about Laurel Halo's sound - the sonic templates may change, but the challenging of divides remains. Laurel Halo returns to LP format after two critically acclaimed EPs with the driving, meditative 'Chance Of Rain'. Evolving from earlier works, it's a cerebral exploration of the intersection between rhythmic and ambient music, drawing together moments of movement and stillness, psychedelia and presence of mind. On 'Chance Of Rain', rhythms melt with unpredictable structures, ambient drift and deep harmonic passages, while keyboard-based interludes reinforce both the far-out and contemplative aspects of the record as a whole. Halo's evolution as a live performer has directed her music's development in part, as the tracks on ‘Chance Of Rain’ are fleshed out versions of live hardware improvisations. This LP is far off from the definition of a traditional dance long player; where tracks like ‘Serendip,’ ‘Chance Of Rain’ and ‘Ainnome’ invite with infectious grooves, others like ‘Oneiroi’,‘Still/Dromos’ and ‘Thrax’ invert these energies, revealing sinister potential in the process. Again Halo's knack for illusory detail and sound design shines, and another duality feeling emerges, this time one of unearthly joy. Drawing inspiration from the music of her home state's music capital Detroit, in both harmonic and rhythmic palettes, the music showcases freedom within metric constructs, and skyward optimism in the face of decay. The album comes packaged with artwork created by her father, an NYC-born, Michigan-based visual artist whose work focuses on industrial landscapes of Michigan and the Rust Belt at large. The artwork here is an early work of his from the 1970s, reflecting the album's twisted, hopeful tone. ‘Chance Of Rain’ was mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin.

Chicago Footwork legend DJ Rashad rounds off an impressive year on Hyperdub with his first album for the label, building on two EPs which have shown the extent to which his and his numerous Teklife collaborators’ sound have evolved in 2013. Named after the recreational cocktail of codeine and sprite, ‘Double Cup’ sees trad 808 footwork workouts thrown into collision with more recent mutations of the sound, presenting Rashad’s most comprehensive showcase of the diversity and strength of the Chicago scene in 2013. The album drags hip hop, R&B, acid, house, techno and jungle into its footwork turbine, spitting them all out in recombinant fragments glued together with purring 808 sub triplets and jerky polyrhythms. The album warms up with a distinctly low slung, g-funk flavour, typical of Rashad & Spinn’s collaborations with San Francisco-based Taso. Hiccuping divas grace the rhythms on ‘Show U How’ and ‘Only One’ and ‘Everyday Of My Life’ (with Phil), with the crew providing their raps on ‘Pass That Shit’, ‘She A Go’ and ‘Kush, Drank, Barz’. The previously released ‘I Don’t Give A Fuck’ marks the dark pivot point of the album, with the pace picking up in the second half with more driving 4/4 flavours such as the title track ‘Double Cup’, the thunderously jacking ’Acid Bit’ with Addison Groove and Chicago house flavours of ’Reggie’ and ‘Leavin’(with Manny). The trip climaxes with the jagged breakbeat science of ‘Let U No’ and ‘I’m Too Hi’ (with Earl). ‘Double Cup’ is another indication that not only is this music still some of the most exciting, forward thinking music for the dancefloor that’s around right now, but that footwork can eat anything.

STREET DATES: Terra Rosa is Everett's most ambitious album to date, a raucous, revelatory song cycle CD - 10/29/2013

LP - 11/12/2013

exploring tales and themes from the Old and New Testaments. The Nashville-based singer/songwriter deconstructs and re-imagines the Book through his own unique perspective, examining matters of love, death, faith, and contemporary America via these most primal of metaphors. There are allusions to such Biblical greatest hits as Sodom & Gomorrah, Jonah and the Whale, and Peter the Rock, alongside deep cuts like "Sapphira," a righteous romp through trials, tithing, and divine judgment. Songs like "No Place To Hide" see a musical approach as daring and wide-ranging as his subject demands, a hallucinatory hybrid of blues, country, boogie, gospel, and rock - in short, the span and spectrum of American music in all its glory. Recorded last year in Nashville alongside such longtime collaborators as co-producer Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Hayes Carll, Chuck Prophet) and multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Dan Cohen, Terra Rosa is at heart an intensely intimate album, its invention and irreverence all reflecting Everett's own struggles with sin and spirit. "The truth is, all these songs are about me," he says, "trying to figure out what I believe 1. and don't believe. It's me going back to my closet and pulling all the skeletons out, 2. looking at the bones and seeing what's there." 3. Jace Everett has long earned acclaim for his remarkable artistic range and alwaysimpressive songwriting. Born in Evansville, Indiana and raised in Grapevine, Texas, he eventually made his way to Music City USA and scored his first #1 co-writing Josh Turner's RIAA platinum certified 2006 country smash, "Your Man." Everett officially became an overnight sensation two years later when "Bad Things" - the spooky, sultry highlight of his self-titled 2006 debut album - was featured as theme song to HBO's blockbuster series, True Blood. "Bad Things" proved a worldwide hit single, as well as a multiple BMI Television Music Award winner, and helped propel the show to its extraordinary longrunning success. Everett continues to grow his gritty, groovy sound with frequent international tours, raising up a fervent fan following at every turn. Bryan and the Haggards featuring Dr. Eugene Chadbourne Merles Just Want To Have Fun Merles Just Wanna Have Fun is a ridiculous spirited, lovingly raucous tribute to one of country’s greats, Merle Haggard. As with Willie Nelson, there’s a bit of jazzy sensibility to Haggard’s music. The tunes aren’t mere three-chord rockers, giving a sextet of exceptional musicians like Bryan and the Haggards featuring Dr. Eugene Chadbourne plenty to work with. And as with Nelson (Poncho to his Lefty, or the other way around), Haggard’s songs are full of character, or rebels and patriots and world-weary travelers. “This was what I was trying to do in 1980, get a jazz band to play country and western and get a record label to pay to record it and put it out. The closest I could get to that was Shockabilly and obviously that was a sidetrack. So listening to this is really gratifying! Let’s see if anybody else likes it!” - Dr. Eugene Chadbourne

“Saxophonist Bryan Murray’s wonderful quintet cast an outside-jazz eye on Bakersfield country legend Merle Haggard, and their bodacious results do justice to both camps. The Hag’s heartbreaking melodies become fodder for genre-slipping arrangements that take the long way home...The band is recording with Chadbourne, who splays country, rock, and bluegrass with feckless hyperactive humor.” — Richard Gehr, Village Voice

The Necks Open Following on from their two track LP release, Mindset (2011), Open sees legendary artists-in-resonance The Necks return to the territory they are best known for, a single piece running for over an hour. True to its title, Open possesses a stillness, drawing the listener into a spacious soundworld. Bassist Lloyd Swanton elaborates: “Mindset reached some pretty intense levels at times, and though we never overtly discussed it, I think that on Open by contrast, all three of us were taken by the idea of working in an area of great stillness. After a couple of days’ recording, it was clear that the music was leading us in this direction.” From the opening tones of Tony Buck’s monochord, it is immediately clear that this Necks album is something special. As it unfolds, ethereal arco harmonics, minimalist funk, mesmeric piano riffs, subliminal pulses, twittering electronics, even an arco bass choir are inducted into the process. Open will be the first of The Necks’ albums released in North America on Northern Spy. “They’re a great label; energetic and imaginative, with some really impressive artists” says Chris Abrahams, “so we’re flattered that they sought us out, and delighted to be working together on growing our music across North America, because the response to our tours there thus far has been incredible.” “The Necks have an impressive knack of showing the listener what it feels like to really listen” Financial Times (UK)

“One of the greatest bands in the world” NEW YORK TIMES “(The Necks) draw your attention to the music instead of the means: you never get the idea that they’re playing for an hour to prove that they can do it, or to showcase a glut of ideas, but simply to give you the pleasure of focusing on music in extreme detail” PITCHFORK “Tonal, accessible, and yet profoundly challenging... Hair of the Dog Prior to becoming a tight knit four piece, North Carolina's Gross Ghost went through various incarnations. Over the first five years, a free flowing and seemingly ever changing cast of characters passed through the band’s practice room. From detuned noise experiments to straightforward rock and roll, each of these members helped shape the tonal palette of the band. But after touring behind their debut, Brer Rabbit (Grip Tapes, 2012), the long time duo of Mike Dillon (guitar, vocals) and Tre Acklen (bass, backing vocals) decided it was time to try a new approach. The addition of two new permanent members, drummer Chris Riddle & guitarist Rob Dipatri rounded out the band and cemented Gross Ghost as a formidable four piece. The band spent the first half of their time together on the road, getting to know each other and touring behind their debut. The latter half was spent holed up in DiPatri's basement, where they began to hone and craft a far more diverse and wider reaching sound. After a particularly bad break-up, singer Mike Dillon found himself traveling from couch to couch, writing songs and lyrics where and when he could. This led him back to the empty house he had once lived in, and he began to write about the events that had occurred over the past year, while trying to shed light on those dark times and looking for a new beginning. With little fuss, the band immediately headed into a secluded studio in Pittsboro, NC all the while refining the material, urgent to capture the songs while they were still fresh. The nuanced interplay of Rob and Mike's crisp twin guitars alongside Tre's lyrical low end and Chris's hypnotic drumming all serve to create a picturesque tapestry of melody and rhythm that girds Dillon's songwriting. It's strength can be found in the band's ability to ring something fresh and exciting out of the classic two guitars, bass, and drums lineup. Seeds opens the album with folding layers of perfectly fuzzy guitars and a vocal hook that makes you yearn to be in the song; in an album rife with singles, the upbeat confection of You Will proves that you can never have enough. Whether it be the somber, acoustic Dissolve or the T. Rex-esque riff stomp of Howlin the album is loaded with hooks you won't even realize were catchy until you find yourself humming them a few hours later. These songs make up the new album, Public Housing. A testament to the peaks and valleys of finding your way through life's more troubling times. An ode to friends and loves lost, they are meant for joyous bacchanals or quiet nights in. Take your pick.

After introductory releases on Southern Lord and Load, Khanate delivered this sprawling two track, 40 minute monster as their debut for Hydra Head Records. Comprised of hushed howls, jagged scrapes, and teeth rattling rumbles, this sparsely populated but infinitely menacing aural landscape soon became one of the definitive destinations in the realm of (avant) doom. Since its release many artists have sought to surpass this edifice of barely punctuated darkness, but few have even come close to producing such an otherworldly artifact of negatively charged abstraction. “Choice” Press Quotes ___________________________________________________ “The NYC quartet's third and best full-length, Capture & Release, generally picks up where others left off, but in an extended, grimier fashion, pairing the 18-minute ‘Capture’ with the 25-minute ‘Release’. It's like a doom-metal opera; the Melvins possessed by Die Kreuzen.” - Pitchfork

“Khanate are the dialectic opposite of stoner rock: they are the essence of Black Sabbath synthesized and distilled down to its ugliest, evilest, most sinister components.” - Tiny Mix Tapes “Capture & Release is evidence of a band well aware of its powers; the varying attack of Things Viral and their eponymous recording has now been reconciled. And what a grim settlement it is. NEW WEATHER NEW WEATHER BSR003 LP / CD / DIGITAL List Price: 22.99 / 14.99 / 9.99 Release Date: October 29, 2013 Genre: Electronic / Psychedelic / Post-Rock / Ambient Domain: Worldwide Box Lot: CD: 40 LP: 40 CD: Mini “LP” Wallet LP: Gatefold + Colored Vinyl Track Listing: 1. Slip 2. Miles 3. New Synth 4. Double Rainbow 5. Everything The musical and artistic pedigree of the trio New Weather can take a moment to absorb. Sean Curley has released a vast catalog of surreal and exploratory albums under various monickers, from the now coveted cassette-masterpieces by The Wallmen to Seattle's space-pop duo, The Midget. Amber Rossino also fronts The Midget with Curley and makes minimalistmodernist jewelry informed by visual mathematics. Tomory Dodge is best known as a painter whose work has been collected by a number of major art museums internationally. With their debut album, New Weather has accomplished something usually reserved for heady 20th century composers like Stockhausen or mid-Century jazz pioneers like Ornette Coleman: they created the sonic equivalent of abstract visual art. What is most unique in the case of New Weather is that the visual artist himself is in the band, a situation that allows New Weather to work directly from the impulses that generated the visual works themselves. This isn't to say that the trio set out to directly replicate Dodge's paintings in sound. As Rossino explains, "This record wasn't made with ideas of art and process in mind. New Weather was made as an expression of how we view ourselves in the shadow of End Times, surrounded by disintegration, entropy, and the beauty that exists in a pre-apocalyptic 21st century." Just as Dodge's paintings can portray the intricate beauty in an explosion or an urban wasteland, New Weather's music finds its own beauty, as dissonance and noise merge with lush synth-based arrangements into uniquely 3-dimensional, luminous and colorful soundscapes. In spite of the weight of its themes, the music is anthemic and up-lifting - a delicate balance that in Curley's hands as a producer, seems effortless. We hear the celestial scrapings of Stockhausen, the minimalism of Kraftwerk, the groove of Air, the ambient drift of Boards of Canada and the insistent psychedelia of early Pink Floyd all layered masterfully into New Weather's own pre-apocalyptic revelry. To make the album, Curley and Rossino received core ideas from Dodge (often in the malleable form of MIDI files) and splayed them onto the elaborate analog synth rigs of their Seattle-based studio where they layered textures, beats and driving arpeggios until these vast and compelling soundscapes emerged. Mixer Allen Farmelo (The Cinematic Orchestra, Talk Normal) and mastering engineer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, MGMT) came into the fold for the finishing sonic touches. Finally, Tomory Dodge created the front cover art specifically for this release, and a print of his painting "The Future” adorns the entire inner gatefold of the 12" LP.

Rickolus C I S 1 0 6 6 : R I C K O L U S - T ROUBADOUR Inspired by a passage from Joseph Campbell's "The Power Of Myth", Rickolus' Troubadour is an album about love as the highest spiritual experience and specifically Richard Colado's (aka Rickolus) love for his wife. It is a recounting of a love that grew longer while the cigarettes grew shorter, while the four track recordings piled up.

WWW. CIRCLEINTOSQUARE. COM WWW. FAKEFOURINC. COM

Distribution Inquiries:

At the beginning of the writing process for Troubadour, Colado had a hard time deciding whether to write metaphorically or literally about his marriage. It was a mess from the start, but in true Rickolus form he jumped in and learned how to swim. Lyrically, Colado decided to make an abstract collage of pictures of his wife that he keeps in his head, instead of trying to paint a portrait of them that was more easily recognizable. Upon finishing those songs however, he felt like they were too abstract to really represent their relationship fully.

WAXEATER - Baltimore Record

Release Date: October 29, 2013 Catalog No: LFR-42 Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 3, 5 Format: 150-gram vinyl List Price: $14.99 Box Lot: 40 RIYL: Future Of The Left, NoMeansNo, Birthday Party, Black Sabbath, Gang of Four UPC: 825576240328

WAXEATER currently reside in the same just-below-the-surface morass where cult TV shows and underground punk rock dwell, which frankly makes no damn sense because they're loud enough to turn heads and invite uncomfortable stares (hell, their name is even shouting at ya). Aluminum guitar advocate and enemy of sleeves Rob Montage's sawblade windmill riffs are given form and shape by Louisville's top bottom end, bassist Elliott Turton and drum-thumper Aaron Sortman. The one-two thwack of “One Man and Two Barrels Will Never Be Enough” into “That's Protestant Whiskey,” tracks two and three off the new disc, are a blueprint for how they do: the former's a tornado of barely-controlled scalpels to the temple, the latter a series of body blows that would KO King Hippo.

Select Reviews “Bloomington, Indiana trio Waxeater have a debut titled Sleeper which fits nicely alongside early to mid-nineties Touch and Go bands like Tar, Jesus Lizard, and friends. Dirty vocals, strychnine guitar pulses, and steady drums bring a strain of punk/hardcore that will have some remembering exactly what they never got from pop happy melodies and current buzzbands who brag about smoking weed...” - Parasites and Sycophants

The Book-Burners - “People’s Songs”

Release Date: October 29, 2013 Catalog No: LFR-40 Recommended Tracks: 1, 2, 4, 10 Format: 150-gram vinyl List Price: $14.99 Box Lot: 40 RIYL: REM, Mudhoney, Guided by Voices UPC: 825576240120

The new full-length album "People's Songs" is a record driven by intense feelings of loss, betrayal, and flat-out anger. Songs such as"Watch What They Say About You", "Who Are You, My Darling?" , and "'Come home.'" reveal a deep, lasting sense of pain at the loss of love, friendship, and trust. However, the record is not a bummer! It brims with the musical muscle and confidence found in men who have stared down the worst that the world has to offer, yet never blinked. The books are written, and the books are burned. Never to be read again. And, simply put, the record rocks. The two-minute scorched earth run of "Fireman" leaves the listener breathless, and the album-closing slam of "Sidesteppers" drives hard in sending a good and proper "Fuck you!" to Wisconsin Republicans. You'll hear all sorts of influences swirling around "People's Songs". There's everything from the off-hand bedroom rock of Guided by Voices to the lilting melodies of high-era R.E.M. to the ragged, rough and tumble pounding of countless Touch & Go, Matador, and Sub Pop bands of the roaring 90's. It's indie rock, yes.

“Good rock'n'roll should sound just like this. Messy. Dirty. A bit mean and a bit weird. Waxeater is a sound that cannot be contained. Just when you think you've got ahold of their garage blues vibe, they throw in some dirgy bass and mix it up with those spider crawling guitars, or as most rock critics call it "angular" guitar. Waxeater is pure vibes, all balls, and some tail. In other words they're fantastic.” - Buffablog

“…searing, guitar-driven songs from London’s Cheatahs bury pop melodies under bright layers of distortion.” – Under the Radar Currently the subject of an Under the Radar feature on newsstands, the London based quartet, Cheatahs return with 2 new tracks as preview to their upcoming album. Announced in August the new material was enthusiastically embraced by blogs such as Stereogum, Prefix and The Onion affiliate, AV Club – who premiered the news. Cheatahs turned heads in the States on a national Spring 2013 tour as support to Wavves and FIDLAR, which included multiple plays at SXSW. The sold out tour hit 25 markets including LA, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Chicago and resulted in a “must read” “Cheatahs Guide to Touring America” feature on Noisey. Philadelphia's foremost purveyors of psychedelic rock again dazzle with their gift for heavy riffs laced with soaring vocals and swathes of sound. As Michael Gibbons from Bardo Pond says: "We wanted to make as potent a listening experience as possible. The basic tracks were recorded live as a full band here in our studio the "Lemur House", and subsequently tracked here as well giving a live quality to the tunes." Bardo Pond has the outward specifications of a rock band - guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, occasional but crucial flute and violin and vocals - but the rivers that converge into the band's oneiric flow have their headwaters in the outlands of ecstatic jazz, free noise and the avantgarde. Their slow-motion avalanches of churning instrumentation and voice suggest drugged states but don't necessarily require them. At the foundation of the pyramid, the drums of Jason Kourkounis and the bass of Clint Takeda lay down a sinewy, sexy and hypnagogic bottom end. At the centre of the pyramid, the twin guitars of John and Michael Gibbons send out emissaries of fire. Isobel Sollenberger inhabits the place where the pyramid meets the eye of their storm, weaving fibres of voice, flute and violin through the din. If rock music is to have any relevance in the new millennium, it is bands like Bardo Pond that will make it so.

Erstwhile Damned men Paul Gray and Captain Sensible got together in the Welsh countryside with the aim of writing a bunch of new tunes about subjects dear to their hearts. Building upon Captain's unique guitar style and Paul's trademark Rickenbacker basslines, the pair utilised an eclectic bunch of instruments including 12 string guitars, Hammond, harpsichords, sitars, and bouzoukis, giving a nice psychedelic eastern feel to many of the tracks. A recording studio was eschewed in favour of a real garage, 5 mics, a bass drum kept in place by a Doc Marten boot. With a lovely natural drum sound to work with the vocals and overdubs were mostly done in Paul's kitchen Entitled 'A Postcard From Britain' the album takes as its theme all aspects of life in the strange but wonderful country in which the band live. 1.Tragic Roundabout 2.Halfway to Hollywood 3.Queen For A Day 4.Stole Into The Night 5.State Of The Nation 6.Lottery Of Life 7.English Summer 8.Forgotten High Streets 9.City Bird 10.Looking At You Vinyl tracklist Side 1 1/Tragic Roundabout 2/Halfway to Hollywood 3/Queen For A Day 4/Stole Into The Night 5/Lottery Of Life Side 2 1/English Summer 2/Forgotten High Streets 3/State Of The Nation 4/City Bird 5/Looking At You

Coloured Vinyl LP (Limited to 500). Edinburgh quartet The Spook School make very noisy guitar pop songs inspired by the post-punk-pop of Buzzcocks, ‘Transformer’ ,Buster Keaton, and a dash of 60s pop for good measure. With guitarist Nye Todd identifying as trans, the band explore gender/sexuality with stories that do not shy away from being absurd. Album title ‘Dress Up’relates to the idea of gender being a social construction, As the band explain; “We want to liberate the listener by lubricating their ears with noisy pop songs about coming to terms with gender identity and realising how silly the world is..” The band started playing together because Nye and Adam (siblings) had written a few songs and fancied playing them with a full band. None of them even knew how to play their instruments or write songs. They still don’t really, although that’s now become important in terms of how they sound. They don’t really “write music”, they just try and make noises that sound nice and exciting. 1. Are You Who You Think You Are? 2. I'll Be Honest 3. You Make It Sound So Easy 4. The Cameraman 5. Lower Plenty - Strange Beast Fire Records 7” BLAZE45211 809236121172 $7.99 Strange Beast is the first single to be taken from Lower Plenty’s highly regarded album ‘Hard Rubbish’ The subtle ‘Strange Beast’ is as haunting as it is memorable. A song which shuffles gently around the melody whilst enveloping the listener in an atmosphere of beautiful gloom. We hear our lo-fi troubadours account; “Loneliness is the biggest killer of them all” with a sincerity that leaves one shaken and stirred. The previously unreleased ‘Old Tom’ is another lo-fi gem. Out of a cloud of tape hiss a simple yet infectious guitar melody combines with random percussion and matter of fact vocals. The result? Another laid back pop gem from the back streets of inner city A - ‘Strange Beast B - ‘Old Tom’

The album is pure pictorial fantasy, translating the images of a half-century of National Geographics into 17 tracks that’ll have both tiki drink connoisseurs and scotch aficionados swaying and bopping to the sweat and crackle of Feighan’s latest beatscapes. As with his past releases, Feighan is eager to have his passport stamped, reluctant to stay in one paradise for too long. His wanderlust samplings travel from Peru to Japan, Detroit to Maui, and Ghana to Barcelona expressing the pageantry and ceremony of destinations only the truly intrepid have tasted
