Back with a new studio album, False Idols, and his own label (also bearing the False Idols name), but also back in a personal sense. “I was lost for ages”, he says. “I was trying to prove something to people, trying to do something to please other people and also myself at the same time, which is never going to work. To be honest with you, I’ve been floating around since Chris Blackwell and Island. My last two albums, I thought they were good, but I realise now they weren’t.

This album is about me finding myself again.”

It opens with a cover of a Van Morrison song, “Somebody’s Sins,” which sees Tricky and vocalist Fran Belmonte whispering “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine” over a sparse groaning bass. The lead single “Parenthesis,” which features a vocals from Peter Silberman of The Antlers, has more rhythmic grunt, which gives a different dimension to the dark gothic atmosphere that pervades the record. No-one does this kind of thing better.

The resemblance to Maxinquaye is undeniable, though the material on False Idols is gentler; more mature. Many of the songs feature artists signed to Tricky’s new label, including 24-year Londoner Francesca Belmonte and Fifi Rong. The album also includes collaborations with Nigeria's new global star Nneka, the afore-mentioned Peter Silberman. In the months before the album’s release, False Idols will also release an EP showcasing the label’s roster on new non-album material produced by Tricky. Why the name False Idols? “Because there’s so much bollocks going on at the moment mate,” Tricky fires back. “People follow celebrities and read every little thing they do. It’s living vicariously through someone else. Get your own life. All this stuff is false idols.

“This new album I’ll stand behind every track,” Tricky says. “I don’t care whether people like it. I’m doing what I want to do, which is what I did with my first record. That’s what made me who I was in the beginning. If people don’t like it, it don’t matter to me because I’m back where I was.”

A collaboration between The Fleshtones and Mary Huff (Southern Culture on the Skids) has been a long time coming. After meeting at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA years ago, the two bands began crossing paths in studios and via their record label, Yep Roc. In October of 2012, both bands descended on Carrboro, North Carolina to participate in the Yep Roc 15, a celebration of the 15th year of operation of their record label. The bands slipped off to Rick Miller's (Southern Culture on the Skids) local studio where Mary lent her vocals to "For a Smile" and "Everywhere is Nowhere." The result is a 7 inch single that Peter Zaremba (The Fleshtones) thinks should be called "Mary Huff and The Fleshtones."

After starting separately as beat makers during the golden age of indie hip-hop in the late 90s, the duo united and expanded their repertoire in 2006 with the double album A Heap Of Broken Images. The first disc of this album was their first official foray into purely instrumental work. Subsequently they have pursued both avenues, collaborating with several rappers while also releasing two more instrumental suites – Late Night Cinema and Noir. Paying homage to their mutual appreciation of southern rap traditions in a historically unique way, the duo also created chopped & screwed version of these albums, respectively called Lean Night Cinema and Noir + Violet.

Striving to continue progress into unexpected directions, Blue Sky Black Death now present their most ambitious and original work yet. Glaciers is a culmination of years of experimentation, a realization of ideas which were only hinted at in their previous efforts. While the tag ‘instrumental hip-hop’ could still be applied nominally, the duo’s appreciation of post-rock, shoegaze and prog-rock makes for a daring sonic blend far removed from the repetitive loops and structures traditionally associated with this genre.

This departure from convention is accentuated further by cameos from fellow Fake Four Inc. signees Child Actor and singer JMSN. Their collaborations with BSBD are symbiotic, marked by mutual testing of comfort zones, the guests and their hosts pushing each other beyond boundaries of previous experience. To ensure that the presentation of Glaciers is as unique as its contents, the cover was commissioned to the multi-talented Maxime Buchi; a notable tattooist, designer and creative director of the cult favorite Sang Bleu magazine.

Even when accounting for the continuously blurring lines between rap production and electronic and ambient music, what happens on Glaciers still stands as nearly unprecedented. Simply put, the aim here is to go big. In one regard this means longer songs, with several tracks reaching over 10 minutes. But beyond just length, there is a sense of operatic grandiosity that imbues even the album’s shorter entries.

The group has combined samples with live instrumentation before, but never so dramatically and profoundly as now. The listener is placed directly into the eye of the storm as all around him chords and vocals swell and fall, awash in sweeping waves of synth and bass. The effect is sometimes chaotic but never violent. Blue Sky Black Death craft music of tumultuous beauty; music at once both exciting and soothing. Predicated on this contradiction, their compositions coalesce into a singular harmony. They form a new terrain from disparate building blocks, a vast alien expanse of sound waiting to be explored.

GARY LUCAS CINEFANTASTIQUE This album is a total labour of love. I have been fascinated with film ever since I was a boy, when I used to project 8mm silent horror and science fiction classics courtesy of Castle Films to my friends in the basement of our house in Syracuse NY (a mere nickel would gain you admission). And I quickly grew to love film music scores - and the way they can comment on and enhance the experience of viewing a classic film. A good film theme can stick in your mind indelibly, like the best pop songs. I thank my mom and dad for instilling my love of film music - popular soundtrack LPs of the day were played continuously on our hi-fi, which is where I first fell under the spell of Victor Young’s “Around the World in 80 Days,” Michel Legrand’s “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” music and Frances Lai’s score for “A Man and a Woman” (the last two both ear-marked for “Cinefantastique Vol. 2”). And I have been intimately involved with composing film music - especially otherworldly film music - since being asked in 1971 to score my first film, “Aquatic Ecology,” a documentary for the New York State Department of Forestry narrated by fellow Syracuse native Rod Serling (Mr. Twilight Zone). Since then I have composed music for both film and television and have covered many film themes over my 20 plus album career to date. This is the first time though that I have assembled a full album devoted to showcasing some of my favorite film music composers and some of my own film music. And it is all arranged and performed (except for one piece) for solo guitar, without overdubs. Not that easy to pull off, considering most of the classic film themes covered here (well all of them) were composed and recorded for full orchestra. But I love a good challenge. And as I have been described as a one man guitar orchestra...enjoy!

BEATLES REIMAGINED Featuring ten different upcoming US bands across diverse genres, Beatles Reimagined STREET DATE: 10/01/13 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the recording and release of classic Beatles tracks from 1963-4, including “From Me To You”, “She Loves You”, and “I Saw Her Standing There” which cemented the band’s status as the princes of rock and roll. The album will be released on Community Music’s “Community Project” label with a percentage of the profits going to charities involved in music and youth.

Beatles Reimagined honors the greatest modern songwriters of all time whilst infusing their music with a distinctly 21st century twist. These new interpretations are not simply covers but have acts reinvisioning the songs in their own original language from acoustic folk (The Well Pennies), new-rock (Mobley), new-wave (Adventure Galley) and dance (Night Panther) through Downtempo (Feverbody), old school soul (Doom & Gloom) and retro-pop (Leftover Cuties). Just as The Beatles themselves influenced by the American acts Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis, Beatles Reimagined returns their music to the heartland that inspired them: the United States.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros lend their unique musical perspective to the project. The band’s jubilant, richly textured version of “I Saw Her Standing There”, blend’s Alex Ebert’s soulful lead vocal with the layered multiinstrumentalism of the Edward Sharpe’s signature sound. “The Beatles are the band I think of the most when I’m considering if the music I’m making is good enough.

So having the free license to make these songs your own is a beautiful thing,” reflects Alex. Edward Sharpe have sold over 500,000 albums and over 1.8 million tracks.

After her much lauded debut ‘Playin’ Me’ last year, Cooly G returns with an EP that switches from songwriting mode to create extended, spaced out and rhythmic house tracks built for the dancefloor.

‘Hold Me’ starts with minor note stabs and Cooly's vocal refrain “Hold me” over a punchy bassline. The rhythm slowly builds as the vocal becomes more dubbed out and the atmosphere more smokey.

‘Oi Dirty’, made with DVA, is a piece of wonky, rhythmically lopsided house with a cavernous elasticized bassline and lots of micro detail destabilising the track then bringing it back, pitching drums and mini breakdowns.

‘Molly‘ is a slow burning 4/4 house track built around a static grid that gradually builds up, getting stiffer and more intense, with wobbly acid-like synth lines and hissing static stabs, underpinned by a one note bass kick. DVA comes with a four tracker, including a DJ Rashad remix, which works really expressively within a tight format of stabbing melodies and swirling psychedelic atmosphere. The EP starts with the very broken beat of ‘Mad Hatter’ its chewed up snares slung around a driving kick and frantic off beat tones that disappear down wormholes of fx before popping up again.

'Gang Gang Riddim' is deconstructed dancehall, taking driving claps that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Lenky track and wrapping nervous stabs and a sliding funky worm-like melody through them, with the occasional rasta sample dropping into the mix.

'Chilli Burrito' starts off being all about pounding moody kicks and hypnotic, brassy stabs, but wait until the dialogue of a new MDMA user starts and the music becomes a witty, sardonic accompaniment to the girl's drug fuelled mood swings.

Finally, DJ Rashad remixes the now classic 'Walk It Out'. It starts super minimal and pounding, just the vocal, a bass tone, and drums, chopped and looped, before the track opens out onto a lush funk break, giving it a whole new energy.

The special extended CD version also includes the best tracks from last years highly acclaimed ‘Fly Juice’ EP, which contrast well with the new material as colourful chunky techno that switches up every 8 bars, like grime, with plenty of shuffle and offbeat to counter the 4/4 drums.

‘Fly Juice’ opens with sweet jazz funk Rhodes before dropping into weightless bouncey chopped vocals and stuttering drums building through 8 bar patterns, dropping in the Rhodes as a sweetener. ‘Do It’ runs a stuttering voice, a huge deep bassline and relentless building stabs against shuffling drums. ‘Walk It Out’s repetition of the titular hookline over a 4/4 two note melody is positively dumb, but pitched against swirling effects and whooshing chords the effect is epic. In ‘Rumours’, the voice of Hype Williams’ Inga Copeland is swirled around the mix, as the track breaks down into a wonky jump up melody. Morgan Zarate's futuristic pop constructions and elegant takes on hip hop and R&B on this new EP are really something to behold. Take lead track 'Pusher Taker'. With Roses Gabor's softly sung vocal, and with the kind of melodic hooks and chords that wouldn't be out of place on a psychedelic period Prince production, the track still ends up sounding contemporary as a high contrast pop grime mutation with whipping snares.

A four tracker of brash footwork, stretched to it's limits and rippling with colour. Starting with 'I Don't Give A Fuck', a vicious nihilistic vocal sample is looped over a banging bass drum and a startling bleeping melody, while drums pound and scissor in response.

On 'Brighter Dayz' Rashad is joined by Spinn. The track has a bittersweet disposition, with citrus sad piano keys and rhythmic wordless vocals, interspersed with a diva who just bellows “Brighter Dayz”, the drums cutting between juke 4/4, amen breaks and sidewinding, footwork kicks and snares.

'Everybody', a collaboration between Rashad and Freshmoon, is really daft; a comical vocal repeating “I Still Love You” that melts down into exagerrated crying is chopped to shreds over drums that break and build from half to double time.

Sam Walton is a 22 year old producer from Manchester who came to Hyperdub after feeding us demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the ‘Walton EP’, the first of three EPs for the label. Since then he’s honed and developed his music into ‘Beyond’, finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesn’t seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and Detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions.

Walton's music is never sombre or angry, but is about subtle combinations; there is an appealing, soulful sensuality to his beautifully crafted and joyous music. He says of the album “I just wanted there to be a contrast between bright and dark, I didn't want to stick to a specific genre either. Just a vibe.” Walton's young enough to hear older elements of dance music with fresh ears - a recent Hacienda reunion was an ear opener, hearing the stripped back power of acid house for the first time influenced some of the music on ‘Beyond’, in the way that a handful of contrasting elements can be placed together to create an exciting whole.

Tracks like ‘Need To Feel' find this idea in action, this catholic but balanced take on production working in effect, with funky basslines, garage woodblocks and ambient atmospherics. On ‘Can't You See', grimey kicks and claps are pitched against swooning, trancey strings, and 'Every Night's tough grimey synth horns work in tune with echoed guitar licks and pumping kicks. Or check the way the clanking metallic drums and 3D atmosphere of ‘You And Me’ contrast with warped diva giggles.

By contrast, a tune like ‘Memories’ will wrongfoot you with a long, detailed intro before breaking into a track that cuts between old school grime and bitter sweet house stabs, as will ‘Grit's whipping snares, strange rotating bleeps and snaking bassline. ‘Frisbee’ again works with a grime pallette, a sparse, inventive soundscape of huge car door slams, weird squeaks and crackles, and a four note melody, while ‘City Of God's reverb laden, depressed beatlessness evokes a feel somewhere between grime and dubstep.

Alternately recalling familiar dance music but created with freshness and enthusiasm, Walton's vision is a welcome and highly enjoyable mutation.

Ikonika has always been a maverick talent and her music has always been fun – aside from a reputation for being one of the best DJs in the business, the prescient electronics of her 2010 debut ‘Contact, Want, Love, Have’ were something of a prequel to what people started to call post-dubstep. Her citric synths, brash tone clashes and cluttered video game-inspired genre mangles came to her naturally, before legions of young producers got in on the act.

According to Ikonika “The word ‘Aerotropolis' comes from being a DJ living in one. I'm haunted and infatuated by it. Watching ‘Gattaca’ for the first time, I found myself relating to Vincent Freeman's ambition of reaching space and travelling somewhere better, getting high. I'm constantly watching planes take off and twitching that I didn't get a booking this weekend, needing to play out.’

The ‘80s is still a big touchstone for this album, but the angle is very different, Ikonika says “This new album plays on an inspiration I wished I had focused on more growing up. I started fantasising about making freestyle house and early pop wishing I was a little older at that time so I could actually have made this music.” This time around the feeling is a confident brashness that takes on older genres, brushes them off, and gives them a colourful shakedown. “I thought about how video games consoles were being championed at the time when a lot more music machines were being made. That connection led me to use sounds from older drum machines and synths, balancing old school and modern techniques.”

The album opens with the gentle posi-drone of ‘Mise En Place’ before breaking into Ikonika’s first track to feature vocals, ‘Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)’ featuring Jessy Lanza, whose joyous lyrics set the tone for the rest of the album. ‘Mr Cake’, up next, is a bold electro-pop track with a gentle bounce. Ikonika talks about “letting the sound take flight”, and the positively soaring melodies of ‘Eternal Mode’ attest to that, roaring out over chiming italo-disco style arpeggios. ‘Completion’ is about spacious ambience before ‘Manchego’ breaks out into playful stop-start jacking house with a fat bass line. ‘Let A Smile Be (Y)our Umbrella’ is a mix of warm tightly-balanced chords and minimal finger snaps. ‘Mega Church’s mood is reflected in its title; playing out on huge, reverbed claps and an ocean of rippling organ. ‘Cryo’ is a dark flight with ominous chords and thunderclap snares, while ‘You Won’t Find It Here’ is a combination of cold bleeps and happy synths stabs. The album ends with ‘Zen Sizzle’, a solemn and contained track, but with a goofy melody running through.

These songs positively glisten and sparkle. This is an album with a big heart and a lot of confidence, creativity and joyful direction.

Jessy Lanza’s debut album 'Pull My Hair Back', co-written and co-produced with Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, is a 2013 flagship for what electronic pop could sound like, stripped of bloated, behaviourist impulses that treat listeners like lab rats. It's graceful and erotic without the gratuitous close ups, icey and sensual, sweet without rotting your teeth, emotional but with enough blue glow to pull your heart strings. Jessy's voice flutters through the synths seductively, insistent without the over-singing and grating choruses that plague so much contemporary pop.

Jessy Lanza has a background as a singer and skilled piano scholar, and the duo share a mutual love of collecting the old hardware synths and drum machines that grace this collection of songs. Transecting R&B, house, disco and ‘80s studio rock, the production is immaculate, reminiscent of early Junior Boys, treading that fine line between cold futurism and the R&B that Jessy and Jeremy are infatuated with.

‘Pull My Hair Back’ opens with the bouncy, acidic bassline, plaintive piano and shimmering, delay effected vocals of 'Giddy'. The ominous pitched down introduction of '5785021' gives way swiftly to a juddering pulse, insistent lyrics, bustling hi-hats and citric, crystalline synths. 'Kathy Lee' is a minimal, smouldering slow jam illuminated by smudged water colour keys, which switches into double time syncopation in the closing stretch, the song begging as many questions as it answers.

Jessy's vocals sound comfortably at home over the fluttering-pitched synths of 'Fuck Diamond' and the album's pop pinnacle, 'Keep Moving', where the tempo rises into classic disco, house and techno. 'Against The Wall' marches in with crunchy, metallic drums and a bumbling baseline, as the singer’s sweet, delayed voice rides a line through powerfully contrasting gurgling, strobing synths.

The album's title track stutters in with carefree, implied S&M directives and sour splashes under an ultraviolet glow. 'As If' throws a curve ball as its rolling, martial snares and walking bassline climax in a sour, acidic crescendo. And the album rounds off gracefully with the flood of endorphins of 'Strange Emotion'.

'Pull My Hair Back' is bittersweet, blue and soulful, shot through with driving, fizzling arpeggios. It balances cold, machine tooled precision with Jessy's beguiling, elevated vocals and her more intuitive, impressionistic keyboard playing. Lean and deadly, it leaves you craving more.

Defined by a unique blend of post-punk, cabaret, and goth rock, Out of Sync With Time collectively feels like something of a lucid dream. With all-but-non-existent guitars, the record relies heavily on the juxtaposed contrast of chromatic treble on the keys countered by imposing synthesizers in the bass. Toss in a healthy dose of drum rolls, dirty percussion and emotional vocals and the resulting sound is a tantalizing, albeit disturbing, hybrid of The Birthday Party and The Cure.
