Post punk provocateurs The Pop Group, one of the most wildly innovative and barrier-shattering bands to emerge from the late ’70s era are set to release their first studio recording in 35 years. The album ‘Citizen Zombie’ has been produced by one of the biggest names in commercial pop music, multi Grammy and Academy Award winner Paul Epworth (Adele, U2, Florence & The Machine). The album, features original members Mark Stewart (lyrics / vocals), Gareth Sager (guitar), Dan Catsis (bass), and Bruce Smith (drums). The announcement of the new album has been received with great enthusiasm from major music sites across the globe, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and Noisey to name a few. Rolling Stone recently featured The Oral History of The Pop Group, citing the band as inspiration for everyone from Nick Cave to Nine Inch Nails, and going on to say:

CD / LP / Digital FREAK8 / FREAK9

“They paved the way for Fugazi's politicized dissonance, Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails' larger-than-life soundscapes, and the dancefloor-friendly art-rock moves of contemporary bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars.”

Rollingstone.com 2014 “The years have divested this band's music of none of its urgent potency”

Artist: Future Brown Title: Future Brown 2.24.2015

WARPLP262/CD262

Overview

“pan-atlantic blend of bass musics, melding everything from lumbering grime to footwork to the hybrid, space-age R&B” – Pitchfork (Best New Track) “Future Brown is f*cking massive" – The Source

Often dubbed a “supergroup”, each member of Future Brown is a seasoned artist across genres. Fatima Al Qadiri, a Kuwaiti musician and visual artist, last year debuted her LP Asiatisch to critical acclaim via the infamous Hyperdub. LA-based Daniel Pineda and Asma Maroof have been producing and DJing as Nguzunguzu for the Fade To Mind crew and worked with rappers Le1f, M.I.A and R&B singer Kelela. J-Cush, runs Lit City Trax from NYC, a label providing an outlet for urban music from every corner of the globe including the late Chicago footwork legend DJ Rashad.

Format: 12” Vinyl Boxlot: 25 Price: $22.99 Packaging: LP in printed inner and outer, with DL card

Format: CD Boxlot: 30 Price: $15.99 Packaging: CD in 4 panel digipack

Presenting vocal collaborators with strains of sonic ideas they would never encounter otherwise, Future Brown manage to catalyze a cosmopolitan, experimental approach to contemporary urban sounds. Future Brown caught early attention with their breakaway track featuring Chicago’s rising star Tink. The first producers outside of her city to champion the young vocalist (who is now working on her debut album with Timbaland and André 3000), the epic ‘Wanna Party’ now bookends the album with another Tink collab, “Room 302”. Other vocalists include grime’s Ruff Sqwad members Rapid and Dirty Danger, Kelela, Yung Chop’s 8TMG MCs and Stargete’s proteges Sicko Mobb. Timberlee (reggaton star and Major Lazer collaborator) even graces the album, as well as rapper Shawnna. Performatively Future Brown have backed up their sound with full concept installations at MoMA’s PS1 Gallery alongside DIS Magazine as well as Miami’s Art Basel this winter. On radio they have gained fans regionally as varied as BBC Radio1 and DJ Pharris at Power 92 Chicago.

HOT SUGAR GOD’S HAND STREET DATE: 2/24/15

The innovative productions of Hot Sugar (née Nick Koenig) on the Muscle Milk and Moon Money EPs and tracks with artists including Das Racist, Kitty, Antwon, Big Baby Gandhi and the Roots helped to cement his status as one of the underground’s hottest beat-makers. His debut album “God’s Hand,” is his boldest outing to date. Koenig has pioneered the production style of ‘associative music’ in a process of manipulating recordings from non-traditional sources and everyday life which are then repurposed into their own unique sounds that make the audience hear the world around them in a whole new way. STAVROS PAZARENTSIS SLOBODAN TRKULJA SERGIU BALUTEL OĞUZ BÜYÜKBERBER ORLIN PAMUKOV TOBIAS KLEIN CLAUDIO PUNTIN STEFFEN SCHORN

Balkan Clarinet Summit brings together local and international clarinet masters to combine, contrast and mix the fascinating variety of the balkan clarinet playing with the interpretive culture of both classical and jazz traditions. The clarinet is the most popular instrument in South Eastern Europe besides the violin, yet numerous divergent performance techniques have emerged from area to area.

Goethe-Institut Athina director Wolfgang Pöhlmann had the original idea which was then picked up by the Goethe-HQ in Munich. Music journalist Guenther Huesman developed it further and, finally, Claudio Puntin and Steffen Schorn were brought on board as musical directors. Claudio then went on a 2-month search for the right artists, seeking local masters who are rooted in tradition but are still flexible enough to work with colleagues from different musical heritages.

The next step was to compile the repertoire for the project. Every musician provided 2 to 4 traditional pieces or their own compositions. Steffen and Claudio then made the arrangements for this unusual acapella formation. Rehearsals proved tricky at first as finding ways to balance and complement the varied means and ways of adaptation was an art in and of itself! The project then all came beautifully together over 3 concerts in September 2012 in Athina, Braśov and Thessaloniki. The outstanding feedback saw the group hit the road for more concerts in December, performing in Sofia, Beograd, Novi Sad, Sarajevo, Zagreb, Ankara, istanbul, izmir and again in Athina.

The story thus far has been captured on this live-CD as well as a film, directed by Horacio Alcala. Both convey this extraordinary collaboration and are a moving testimony of artistic understanding beyond style definitions and national borders. The story will hopefully continue …

Six years into Dutch Uncles’ flourishing career, the idiosyncratic artpopologists return with new album O Shudder which sees them further distilling and refining their signature sound, marrying rock bombast with classical arrangements, acoustic instrumentation with smart synthetic pop. O Shudder is Dutch Uncles’ most direct record to date, the sound of a wildly witty band well and truly finding their stride, whilst lyrically tackling the growing pains of being twentysomething in a generic Northern suburbia; according to hip swivelling front man Duncan Wallis, the album covers themes including “pregnancy, social media, terrorism, divorce, sexual dysfunction, job seeking, health scares, doubt, love”. With O Shudder, Dutch Uncles continue their fascinating, wonky ascent which has seen them play enormodomes with emo punk rock behemoths and self confessed Dutch Uncles acolytes Paramore, supporting and being supported by like minded left-field pop adventurers Wild Beasts, Outfit, Field Music, and Everything Everything, have a burger named after them by one of Manchester’s premiere eateries and prefigure Future Islands’ dance moves meme in their video for 2013 single Flexxin. The album was recorded with long term collaborator Brendan Williams in three locations; at a studio in the heart of the Welsh valleys, above a Salford pub, ‘The Kings Arms’, (incidentally where C4 comedy Fresh Meat is filmed) and, for the acoustic instruments, in the natural reverb of Salford’s Peel Hall. The band were meticulous in tweaking their synth sounds so they’d fit seamlessly with the harp, xylophone, marimba, string and woodwind sounds that populate the record. Sources of inspiration for the record included The Blue Nile, Kate Bush’s third album, Never For Ever, Igor Stravinsky, Japan and lyrically John Cooper Clarke, Sparks, Ian Dury and Prefab Sprouts’ album From Langley Park to Memphis. All set to o shudder and stun, and induce plenty of hip swivelling, Dutch Uncles have delivered on their youthful potential and, with O Shudder, solved their own particular Rubix’s cube, bringing their unclassifiable pop music into clear and precise focus.

FREE WEED INTRODUCING THE DEBUT ALBUM FROM FREE WEED WILL BOOST YOUR HAPPINESS AND LOWER YOUR INHIBITIONS

STREET DATE: 2/24/15 As ringleader of great bands The Memories and White Fang, not to mention penning the “Burger TV” theme song for Burger Records, Free Weed (Rikky Gage) has built a sizable indie following that continues to veer mainstream. With Introducing, he is now positioned as ambassador of the legalize-it movement, having crafted a hit-repeat player that splices the freak power illumination of Ween with the catchy spirit of “Loser” era Beck. The album is themed around Free Weed’s love of marijuana and his digitally well-documented bacchanal lifestyle. No twigs, no seeds to be had, Introducing is all killer, no filler, never sputtering into stoner novelty. This is an album to boost your happiness and lower your inhibitions. The album’s pedigree extends to being mastered by Mikey Young, member of requisite Aussie outfit Total Control, with cover art by ever-talented Dustyn Peterman of San Diego art collective Mushroom Necklace (Ty Segall; Thee Oh Sees). VICE Art Editor Nick Gazin, responsible for the iconic Run the Jewels art, has created a digital mini-comic for the album unveiling the origins of Free Weed!

The digital mini-comic by Nick Gazin is inspired by the famous Stephen King short story, “Weeds” and the Creepshow segment that adapted it to the silver screen. It is included on the download card, as well as two exclusive bonus tracks. Indie-only editions also include Doper, the lost 1994 documentary about working class stoners directed by Mike King and Jim Van Bebber (cult filmmakers behind Deadbeat at Dawn). Previously out of circulation, this is the first official DVD release of the film...ever.

Soul Jazz Records Presents

Lloyd McNeill & Marshall Hawkins

Tanner Suite Universal Sound (a division of Soul Jazz Records)

Street Date: 24th February 2015 No shipments outside of North America

Soul Jazz Records/Universal Sound is releasing the third album from deep jazz flautist and composer Lloyd McNeill (alongside the earlier ‘Asha’ and ‘Washington Suite’). Tanner Suite is one of the most beautiful and by far the rarest of all of McNeill’s records. A unique piece of music especially commissioned by the Smithsonian National Gallery Of Art in the late 1960s, to accompany an exhibition of the work of Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first African-‐American painter ever to gain international success. Tanner Suite was originally released in 1969 as a private, individually numbered pressing of 1000 copies on McNeill’s own Asha Record company and has never been issued since. Soul Jazz Records new pressing of this album is also limited to 1000 copies each on vinyl and CD. Both editions come in heavyweight exact-‐replica hard tip-‐on USA card sleeve original artwork. In addition, there will be a worldwide digital release. Lloyd McNeill is a flautist, composer and painter. As a musician he studied with Eric Dolphy, played with Nina Simone, Mulatu Astatke, Nana Vasconceles, Ron Carter, Dom um Romao and Sabu Martinez. In the mid-‐1960s McNeill headed to Paris and became friends with Pablo Picasso.

GENRE : ELECTRONIC / POP FILE UNDER: “P” Prekop, Sam “S” Sea and Cake, The RELEASE DATE : February 24, 2015 Regardless of the style he is working in, Sam Prekop’s music is always imbued with a sense of wide-eyed discovery and exploration. As the singer and guitarist of The Sea and Cake, Prekop has incorporated elements of traditional styles from around the world, expanding the public perception of what it means to be the leader of a pop band. In recent years, he has also established himself as a modular synthesist, building his instrument meticulously to find the perfect combination of oscillators, sequencers, limiters and filters to create a system that allows him to create sounds that are surprising and inviting. His new album The Republic is his latest synthesizer work, following 2010’s Old Punch Card, and showcases Prekop’s talent for creating expressive music through mechanical patterns, repetitions, and chance. Prekop’s innate gifts of melodic turns of phrase that have made him a revered songwriter are transferred into new forms in his synthesizer work, aided by the unpredictable melodic capabilities of analog sequencers, and The Republic is an exciting new chapter in his development as an accomplished synthesist. The first half of The Republic consists of songs that were originally created as a score for a video installation of the same name by David Hartt, which was shown at the David Nolan Gallery in New York. These pieces strike an impressive balance between control and spontaneity, seamlessly transitioning from abstraction and discord into passages of blissful harmonic consonance. The second half of the record consists of some of Prekop’s most warm and inviting synth work yet, built using ideas that worked better on their own as opposed to accompanying the installation. These songs have a sense of forward motion that is often missing in many recordings by modern modular synthesists, which Prekop attributes to his incorporation of the instrument into his writing process for The Sea and Cake’s acclaimed 2012 album Runner. The Republic is an entrancing album that moves Prekop’s synthesizer compositions further into the realm of the accessible without abandoning the experimental legacy of the instrument. CD List $15.99 BOX LOT CD 40 LP List $18.99 BOX LOT LP 25 Vinyl is non-returnable

Steve Gunn and The Black Twig Pickers are key figures in the current resurgence of American traditional and folk music. Gunn’s songwriting and inventive guitar playing are driven by his restless mind, having released 9 solo and collaborative albums and appeared as a guest on nearly as many since his debut in 2007. The Black Twig Pickers play a fervent form of traditional music from their Appalachian homeland. The group performs often forgotten traditional songs, especially from their Virginia stomping-ground, creating a living history of old time music. They also have an ongoing residency at the legendary Floyd Country Store. Seasonal Hire collects four original tunes and one traditional piece, with Gunn and The Black Twig Pickers’ Mike Gangloff and Sally Anne Morgan all taking turns with lead vocal and songwriting. Like all of the Twigs’ albums, it was recorded live, without overdubs or amplification. Gunn fell right in with this aesthetic and threw down guitar parts like he’d been sparring with banjos and fiddles for years. The majority of the album was recorded at Joseph Dejarnette’s Studio 808a in rural Topeco, Virgina, where Gunn and Gangloff recorded Melodies for a Savage Fix, an improvisational masterpiece of pan-cultural meditations. Echoes of Melodies can be heard on Seasonal Hire’s titular b-side, an extended, beautiful ramble equally indebted to old time music and Indian ragas. Additional recording was done closer to Gunn’s New York home at the famed Black Dirt Studios. Black Dirt has been the home for many groundbreaking records by artists such as Charlie Parr, Jack Rose, Bill Orcutt, Expo 70, and Tom Carter. The album was mastered by Patrick Klem. Seasonal Hire shows the impressive range of some of the most talented and imaginative musicians that have made a name for themselves experimenting in folk forms today. GENRE : ROCK / PSYCH FILE UNDER: “E” Eternal Tapestry RELEASE DATE : February 24, 2015 Portland, Oregon’s sonic explorers Eternal Tapestry have always had a feeling of interplay between their impressionistic music and the dense forests that surround their hometown, but on their newest album, Wild Strawberries, they take that naturalistic inspiration to a new level. Wild Strawberries is a massive double album, which was recorded in a secluded cabin under the shadow of Mount Hood in Zigzag, OR. The contrast between the openness of the massive Oregon sky and the denseness of the trees is echoed in Wild Strawberries’ expansive guitar tones and looming organ drones. The album is thick with the lysergic leads that populated their earlier releases, but the airiness of the woods has seeped into Nick Bindeman’s guitar playing, refining it and opening it up to new modal possibilities. During the recording sessions the Zigzag River flowed nearby, and the group spent time between takes learning about the area’s floral make up and relaxing under the stars. This idealistic lifestyle, however temporary, helped to chart the course of the recording process. Wild Strawberries’ artwork and song titles, which are named after plants specific to the region, both speak to the influence of that environment. The lush atmosphere combined with a week long sequestration from the outside world had a pronounced impact on the music, which unfolds in a panoramic slow burn. Wild Strawberries yields vast rewards for those who spend time in its aural forest. The album as a whole unfolds patiently, but not without purpose. Prior to the recording session drummer Jed Bindeman came across 700 Phish cassette bootlegs, and it was on these cassettes that the sessions for Wild Strawberries were taped, using an eight-track recorder. Thanks to the relaxed vibe of the cabin, the band was able to indulge in extensive improvisational experiments, playing around with the limits of the tape machine. The wealth of material allowed them to select only the most successful of their many pieces.

NIDIA MINAJ Danger Vinyl 12” / Digital Príncipe P008 A1 TRACKLIST:

A1 - Afro A2 - Mambos Fudiz A3 - Estudio Da Mana Na Casa A4 - House Kaliente (w/ DJ Olifox) B1 - Puto iuri B2 - Limite B3 - Aidin B4 - Sentimentos

$15.99 BOX LOT = 25

STREET DATE: 2 /24 / 2015 Nidia used to dance hard (and sing) with her crew of girls back in Vale da Amoreira (south bank of the Tagus river) but she soon imagined the crew producing their own music. She was kind of alone in her enthusiasm and it was only after her move to the Bordeaux area in 2011 that everything clicked together. She was 14. Nidia continued to pick up the vibes coming from the 'hoods around Lisbon and started her own bedroom Estúdio da Mana (Sister's studio). "Danger" is a powerful collection of tracks, it's her own game and it's her first physical release. "Afro" works as an intro. Nidia presents herself over a strong African house beat; we can immediately tell there's something different going on here; Then "Mambos Fudiz" hits us and it's no shame to admit we never saw it coming. A broken house beat (not actually kuduro) paves the road for all the synthetic events happening in the music. It sounds fierce, sort of apocalyptic, rave-y; Unlike many producers who think of their DJ sets when laying out simple beat tracks with little more than 1 minute, Nidia's shorter tracks are fully formed mini gems. "Estúdio Da Mana Na Casa" is another sort of intro / interlude, this time offering a tense and elastic main motive while the percussion stars in its own narrative; Closing side A, Nidia teams up with DJ Olifox for an absolute dark side afro banger. It's "House Kaliente". Just check the loose drums and the way they're countered at some point by these very wicked, distorted, horn-like stabs. This one sounds like it's inventing new combinations; In "Puto Iuri" Nidia namechecks her kid brother over a heavily oriental driven track. Africa meets the Orient as if a synthetic orchestra from China came ashore somewhere on East Africa to jam with local musicians; "Limite" shows an angry mood. Again, fierce. Rave ooze spreads over the surface; claps reinforce a military kuduro vibe; More leftfield experimentation on "Aidin". An insane percussion grid defies rules of common sense, leaving not much space for reflexion, only some air for a vaguely acidic cloud to drift along; "Sentimentos" completely subverts the traditional tarraxo pattern in favour of a freestyle approach. The percussion is still punishing but synth waves hover above all the chaos and transmit some peace. We think it's beautiful. > Limited first pressing > Individually hand-painted sleeves > 18-year old bedroom producer's first physical release

$15.99 BOX LOT = 25

STREET DATE: 2 / 24 / 2015 Maboku and Lilocox make up CDM, an offshoot of PDDG (Piquenos Djs Do Guetto). It's a production team already developed in the days of Pr'incipe's now legendary monthly residency at the Musicbox club in downtown Lisbon. Their back-to-back DJ sets, strongly built around their own productions, bridge any gap between straight jungle kuduro and a personal interpretation of house. However, it's all the things in between that never fail to impress. Watch for the unheard. The EP starts off with the traditional slow jam referred to as Tarraxo. Suggestive moaning gives way to the heavy heavy sound of percussion. You have to feel it especially after the break, when an all-powerful reverb increases the punch. Godamn! "CDM A Comandar" showcases the classic batida and marimba dialogue. It's synthetic Africa deliciously shot through the heads of both producers into our receiving hands and feet; "Viemos Do Congo" unveils a bit more of Africa with tribal drums and a tense harmonica-like melodic hook that ends only too soon. Killer jungle groove; Lilocox is left alone for "To Ligado", a relentless piece of batida with his trademark deep bottom-end. This goes on like a juggernaut; "Laranjas" ("Oranges", go figure) is Maboku's party tune, horn stabs picking up and not letting go. Pure Cargaa for the dancefloor; "No Momento" sounds like the ultimate avant-garde batida. Fat bass drum, crashing hi-hats and hanging bells, all commanded by Lilocox's otherwordly rhythmic sense; Another slow jam at the end: "Grito Das Crianças" plays percussion against percussion, it follows a jacking path before adding melancholy with some lamenting horns. Someone needs to party but feels too introspective to get the gas really going. Catch all the breaks if you can. > Limited first pressing > Individually hand-painted sleeves https://soundcloud.com/principepromos https://principediscos.wordpress.com/ http://www.redeyeusa.com/

A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a searing crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically the most dangerous year in the city’s history. From acclaimed writer/director J.C. Taking cues from the rich musical history of Miami Vice, Scarface, and Suicide, Ebert’s score for the film mirrors Abel’s (Oscar Isaac) angst and tension as he attempts to reconcile the need to expand his business and capitalize on opportunities with the rampant violence, decay, and corruption that threaten to drag his family down and destroy the life they have built. Artist: Nozinja / Tessela Title: Wa Chacha 2.24.2015

Overview

BLP005

“the Soweto dance craze that's about to go global” - The Guardian

On a cold rainy day in London, Tessela met up with Nozinja in a East London pub for a quick pint. They got on like a house on fire, swapping production techniques and notes from their drastically different approach to making electronic music. They ended up going back to Tessela’s studio down the road for an impromptu recording session. What you hear now is the results… 2 very different takes on the same song. ‘Wa Chacha’; produced by 2 artists at the top of their game with a mere distance of 8,000 miles separating their respective hometowns. Nozinja, of Shangaan Electro fame – who is currently prepping for his forthcoming full length album on Warp Records, wrote the original song and was asked by Bleep to collaborate with Tessela for this special one-off 12″ release.Tessela – the UK based producer gaining attention through skilfully blurring the boundaries between techno, jungle and fractured rhythmical structures through his incredible releases on R&S Records, jumped at the opportunity to work with the genre-pioneering South African producer. The results are two superb renditions and arrangements of the infectiously catchy ‘Wa Chacha’.

Having emerged from scenes spanning Providence, Oakland, Berlin and New York, location means little in relation to the work of James K. Her travels have allowed her to absorb each city's distinctive creative energy and influences. Each of her stints in various cities has contributed to the New York native's current sound, which she has quietly honed in on creating aesthetic that is wholly her own. Though she spent many formative years in the noise and DIY scenes in Providence and Oakland her time in Berlin and New York has allowed her to soak up both city's vibrant club scenes. The Fader says her recent single was “what you'd get if a deep-house producer took it upon themselves to rework a Treasure-era Cocteau Twins song.” James K is making music to experiment and the four videos for tracks from this album reflect the same reaching, extracting feeling of that search. Images play around, images that look and give off sensation. That process is James K's way of abstracting sounds, in the lead up to her debut LP in 2015. Simian Ghost is an alternative pop act from Sandviken/Gävle, Sweden. It was initiated as a recording project by musician and visual artist Sebastian Arnström. His debut album, Infinite Traffic Everywhere, was received with blog praise and excellent reviews, topping the Critics Chart in Sweden. The second album Youth was released throughout the world to great reviews and radio support. Simian Ghost originally performed live as a trio, consisting of Sebastian on vocals and electronics, his brother Erik Klinga on drums & Mathias Zachrisson on guitar, (both members of Light Vibes). More recently, they have added two new live members Maja Agnevik on additional vocals and Wilhelm Magnusson on bass. They have already shared stages with the likes of Mount Kimbie, SBTRKT, Niki & The Dove and Tony Buck.!

!

”The trio has conjured something close to Broadcast’s signature sound without abandoning their own, flushing out the floaty futuristic soundscape with the softhewn harmonies that are Simian Ghost’s greater strength” Stereogum!

!

"The results are startling. The band really nail that somnambulist, neo‐ psychedelia which runs through Broadcast's most powerful moments, but with an identity of their own. Respectful but not reverential, it's an interesting look at Keenan's legacy." ‐ CLASH MAGAZINE! ! "A miserabilist indie anthem!" ‐ THE GUARDIAN (Single premiere)!

James Day& THE FISH FRY SOUTHLAND

James Day is a southern blues artist from the Mississippi Gulf Coast town of Biloxi. He spent his late twenties living in New Orleans sucking up all that Americana, New Orleans R&B, and blues. He airbrushed T-shirts, delivered pizzas, was a lifeguard and played in a rockabilly band. One of his day jobs included being a crab boil- fish fry man, working at music festivals. The Fish Fry became the name of the band he put together after moving to Philadelphia. Becoming a favorite in the area, they became the backing band for many traveling blues stars, one of which was James Harman in 2008. Harman and his guitarist, Nathan James, loved James Day and had such a good time that Harman offered to produce his next record at Nathan James’s Scared Cat Studios in Oceanside California. “Firecracker” was critically well-received as a first effort and played globally on overseas and satellite radio stations. SOUTHLAND (Their second CD, and first for Vizztone) is a musical tribute to the Gulf Coast. SOUTHLAND has got it all. From The sizzlin’ “Next New Thing”, the spacious “Country Woman”, the traditional zydeco stomp of “One Step Des Chameaux” and finishing up with the Gospel tinged anthem, “Southland”, this CD covers several musical genres. One can hear all styles of American Roots music from New Orleans street parades, Cuban Rumbas, Swamp Pop, Zydeco, Rockabilly, 1920’s jug bands, Down Home Delta Blues to that classic Chicago shuffle. There is a lot of humor, truth and quirkiness on this CD, and every song has something fresh and unique to it. “James Day and the Fish Fry have found their sound – a brew of influences from the 40’s to the present. I have heard just about every blues style from this former Crescent City native’s band; Chicago, West Coast Jump, Delta, Zydeco, Latin, Swamp Pop, New Orleans Blues , Jazz fusion and some I haven’t figured out yet”. —Where ‘Yat Magazine James Day sings and blows harmonica, but his greatest talent is bringing fresh original songwriting to a diverse sonic palette of American Roots styles. Day is backed by a stellar group of musicians: Mark Shewchuk (guitars), Dave Young (bass, recording engineer), Ron Baldwin (piano, organ, accordian), and John Meriglano (drums). With James Day and the Fish Fry, a brew of influences come together in the form of backbeat drumming, slapping upright bass, fat tone guitar, and honking harmonica. If you want to dance or just soak up some American Blues & roots music, then make it out for a “Fish Fry” show and you’ll have one wild, swinging time.

Overview

WRP9377

“One of the records of the year ” - BBC Music LoneLady is Julie Campbell, and vice versa - there is little artifice involved, but rather a symbiosis between art and creator that manifests itself in the kind of poetic, deeply personal and unapologetic work that becomes timeless music. HINTERLAND comes like a bolt from the dark. At its core beats a special kind of uncomplicated drum machine rhythm and the synthetic timbre of percussion that recalls fractured memories of minimal wave and even early techno, lashed together with LoneLady’s deceptively intricate and propulsive style of guitar playing.

Format: 12” Vinyl Boxlot: 25 Price: $11.99 Packaging: 12" in spined sleeve with download code card

“It’s channelling Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Arthur Russell…among others. A strange but nonetheless real - meeting of funk and…well…me, from Audenshaw, Manchester.”

Cassette Brain Radical Dads is Lindsay Baker, Chris Diken, and Robbie Guertin. Back during their collegiate years, they were all friends on account of liking similar cultural things and rebelling against similar institutional things. They were listening to bands that were au courant in certain circles at the time, such as the Pixies, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, The Clean, and Yo La Tengo. During the course of this liking/rebelling/listening, the three of them began to play music together in different combinations. They all moved apart and did separate stuff for a while. Which is what people do after college — taking time to “find themselves” and/or take artistic risks to “make it in the biz” and/or take an unsatisfying job for the health insurance in case “something bad happens.” Robbie played in the band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah during this time. In 2007 they made it an official band with a name that they liked because it has internal rhyme. Universal Coolers is their 3rd full length and first on Old Flame. The cover art is a Steve Keene original!
